VASIL LEVSKI SECONDARY SCHOOL TROYAN BULGARIA


Troyan is situated in the northern part of Bulgaria. It is 160 km away from the capital city – Sofia. Its population is about 21,000.


Vasil Levski Secondary School is the biggest school in Troyan region. 810 students attend our school. They undergo twelve years of education (usually starting at the age of seven and finishing at the age of nineteen ).


There are 65 teachers in our school


The school has its history dating back to ninety years.


When the students are fourteen years old, this is the beginning of the secondary education. In our school there are 4 different kinds of classes

classes with intensive English language learning;

classes specialized in the field of Information Technologies;

classes specialized in the field of hotelkeeping;

classes specialized in the field of Tourism The teaching in these classes is on a high level.


The students in the classes with intensive English language learning have a good knowledge of English. Their Cambridge certificates demonstrate the good training of the teachers and the good knowledge of English that the students have achieved.


The students from the classes specialized in the field of Information Technologies learn especially Mathematics and Information Technologies. They always take part in the national IT and WEB Design competitions and take first ,second or third place.


The students from the classes specialized in the field of Hotelkeeping are trained very well. They get certificates in “waiter/ waiteress”, “barman”, “cook”.


The students from the classes specialized in the field of Tourism are very well educated. They participate in the “travelling schools� during the summer holidays. That is the way to gain an intimate knowledge of the nature wealth and beauty as well as of the historical monuments in Bulgaria.

In our school, there is a psychologist and a teacher who works with children with special needs.


The students have created their own “STUDENTS COUNCIL” in order to organize different cultural and educational activities.

PROJECTS

The executive body of the school together with the teachers are working hard on different projects. In 2009 we won two European projects. The first one aims at lending variety to the extra-curricular activities.


Its realization has already begun this summer. The teachers responsible for the project have organized a summer camping school at the seaside as well as two travelling schools in the mountain.


During the school year 2009/2010 we will set up some workshops where the students will develop their different talents. They will practise music, photography, astronomy, iconography, they will publish their own newspaper, etc.


The second project is designed for the students from the classes specialized in the field of hotel-keeping. The students will be trained in the three biggest hotels in the region of Troyan.


The aim of the executive body of the school is to make contacts with other schools in Europe. We have already made students’ exchange with France and Germany/Vigneux-sur-Seine, Elvangen/.Тhe contacts are very useful for the children-they get to know a different way of life, a new country, its traditions, the nature, as well as the cultural monuments.


We welcome new contacts and friendships. We would be delighted to be members of the big European union

TROYAN - A PIECE OF HEAVEN IN THE HEART OF BULGARIA Breath-taking mountain landscapes, you can’t take your eyes off. Cristal clear air and a scent of wild herbs which enchants you. Its rich cultural and historical legacy takes you back in time on an unforgettable journey. All this is offered by the Troyan region – a piece of heaven in the heart of Bulgaria.


Troyan is a small town, situated at the foot of the Balkan Mountain along the banks of the Osam River. It has a population of about 21 000 people. It is regarded as an European and Bulgarian capital of the plum and pottery.


The town was founded during the 5th century as a roadside settlement near the Troyan Passage. It was named after the ancient Roman road Via Trayana, built at the time of emperor Trayanus during the first century. The road crossed the Balkan and connected Mizia with Trace and the White Sea. According to the experts it has the most preserved stone road in Bulgaria.


THE TROYAN MONASTERY "ASSUMPTION OF MARY" The Troyan Monastery is one of the most precious Christian monuments in Bulgaria . It was constructed in the 16th century and it is the third biggest in the country. Its ancient history makes a significant contribution to the preservation of the Bulgarian spirit. The church is decorated by the famous artist Zahari Zograf in 1847-1848.Here is the miraculous icon of the Threehanded Virgin Mary, which has got three hands made of silver.


ROMAN MILITARY FORTRESS SOSTRA Sostra is a Roman military camp, built the middle of the 2nd century, which was preserved to the end of the 5th century. It served as an outpost of Via Trayana. The fortress itself was rather impressive with its size. The fortified walls were 130m long. Today it is partly renovated and it attracts many tourists. During the Revival period Troyan developed as a blooming crafts centre. Pottery took central part and it gradually created the unique Troyan Pottery School, which is still one of the best in Bulgaria.


THE MUSEUM OF NATIONAL CRAFTS AND APPLIED ARTS The museum is located in the center of Troyan and it is unique because it is the only museum in Bulgaria that preserves the richness of the masters of folk arts and crafts and applied arts. It is the only museum in Bulgaria, which not only preserves, but also develops the distinctive artistic folk art. Fascinating collections of pottery, textile, folk costumes and pieces of fine and applied art are gathered and renovated at the museum.


THE NATIONAL ARTS AND CRAFTS EXHIBITION The exhibition is situated in the village of Oreshak. It is one of a kind. Every year mastersof all over the world display their art- objects made from ceramics, metal, wood and textile as well as necklaces and arms.


THE NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM One of the most attractive sights in the village Cherni Osam is the Natural History Museum. You can have a glimpse of the Balkan’s spirit in its three halls. Now famous throughout the country, the museum provides a unique attraction for the visitors. There are over 700 exhibits in the museum; one can see samples of all species native to the Central Balkan Range. Moving animals, birds and animal sounds help to generate the excitement of the natural world in the museum’s galleries.


NATURAL SIGHTS There are several natural reserves in the region of Troyan. They are a part of the national park known as Central Balkan, which is famous for its unique vegetation and wild life. The virgin nature there can take your breath away with its incredibly beautiful landscapes.


BEKLEMETO AREA In the Beklemeto area, under the ridge of the Balkan Mountain, 1350m above the sea level, there is a tourist resort complex. It provides its guests with cosy rooms, ski tracks with a tow-lift and the best track for biathlon in Bulgaria.


WIND TURBINES Two wind turbines are placed near Vasilyov Peak, which is 1490 meters above the sea level. The installed windpower capacity of the wind generators is 1300 kW. The wind turbines towers are 42 meters high and the rotor blades are 25 meters long.


MINERAL SPRINGS The area of Troyan is also famous for its mineral springs. The most popular of which are the balneological centres in the nearby villages of Shipkovo and Chiflik. There are a lot of spa hotels with mineral hot water swimming pools where you can not only enjoy your holiday but also treat some health problems


THE FEAST OF THE PLUM The feast of the plum and the plum brandy is one of the most attractive holidays in the area. It is held annually at the end of September and attracts many visitors, who taste the famous drink.


LOCAL CUISINE One of the reasons for the fast tourism development in Troyan is the cuisine of the region –skillful and exceptionally delicious combination of traditional and modern recipes, seasoned by the mastery of the Troyan cooks. You can start from the beans, the nettle and the bacon and even try the difficult sach – and shish-meals, flavoured with aromatic herbs and spices from the Balkan.

Although Bulgaria is a small country, it has been blessed with picturesque nature, hard-working people and rich culture. We offer you to have a glimpse at some of its most wonderful parts.


THE BELOGRADCHIK ROCKS The Belogradchik Rocks are located on the western slopes of the Balkan Mountains near the town of Belogradchik in northwest Bulgaria. Water and wind have shaped their bizarre forms throughout the centuries. Some of them resemble people while others look like animals, bridges, towers or mushrooms. Every stone here has its own history filled with anguish and heroism. A number of legends are associated with the rocks.


THE RILA MONASTERY One of Bulgaria’s most sacred places is situated at the heart of the Rila Mountain. The Rila Monastery was founded in the 10th century and it still keeps the Bulgarian spirit alive.


THE PANAGYURISHTE TREASURE This is the most beautiful golden set in the whole world. It is a masterpiece of Thracian art and a precious

sign of antiquity.


THE CYRILLIC ALPHABET This is the third official alphabet in the European Union. The Old Bulgarian is one of the world’s classical languages along with Latin and old Greek.


THE MADARA RIDER The Madara Rider is a sculptural composition which is one of a kind in Europe. The sculpture was carved 23m above ground level in an almost vertical cliff during the 8th century. It represents a horse rider, thrusting a spear into a lion lying at his horse's feet. An eagle is flying in front of the horseman and a dog is running after him. The scene symbolises the triumph of the Bulgarian ruler over his enemies.


THE TSAREVETS FORTRESS The Tsarevets fortress is situated on a hill in the old Bulgarian capital of Veliko Turnovo. It fascinates with its magnificence and size. The historic hill is surrounded by fortified walls which turn it into an impregnable fortress.


THE SEVEN RILA LAKES The seven rila lakes are one of the most beautiful glacial lakes in our country. They are located in Rila- the highest mountain on the Balkan Peninsular .They have different elevation above sea level and look like giant footsteps, taking you up in the mountain. Their crystal waters are connected through rippled streams, forming small waterfalls.


BLACK SEA The Black Sea, with its endless sand beaches, is one of the most preferable places for entertainment during the long and hot summer days. Its coast is 378km long and distinguishes with various land relief. There are secluded beaches, breathtaking capes, crystal coastal lakes, steep cliffs and mysterious islands


THE ROSE VALLEY The Rose Valley is a small paradise in May! Bulgaria has been one of the biggest producers of rose oil ever since the 17th century.


SREBARNA LAKE Тhe Srebarna Lake is the largest lake on the territory of Bulgaria along the banks of the Danube river. It is a nature reserve and is included in UNESCO World Heritage List. It is home for a number of endangered species.


MINERAL WATER The mineral springs are Bulgaria’s most treasured natural sources. The healing waters of Hisaria, Bankia and Velingrad are well-known far beyond the borders of the country.


THE DEVIL’S THROAT CAVE The world’s second largest underground waterfall (42m) can be found here. According to the legend this is the place where Orpheus descends to the underworld to save his beloved Eyrudice from the Hades’s kingdom.
