Effort begins to reopen the Henry Shaw Museum For The Edge Opened in 1859, Henry Shaw's Museum was the scientific heart of the Garden for more than a century before closing in 1982. With your support through the Garden for the World campaign, the Garden aims to reopen this historic gem to showcase artifacts and offer a unique gathering space in one of the Garden's most beloved areas. The 7000-square-foot Museum is located in the Garden's Victorian District. The Georgian structure was built at Shaw’s direction according to plans by prominent St. Louis architect George I. Barnett, for the purpose of housing the Garden’s original library, herbarium and natural history specimens. In the years after Shaw died on August 25, 1889, the original library and museum served a number of functions. Most uniquely, immediately following Shaw’s death, the Museum was the venue where his body lay in state for pubic viewing. In subsequent years, it has also served as a research lab and a time-lapse photography lab. It has housed offices, a restaurant, board and staff meeting rooms and computer class rooms, and it served as the Garden’s main auditorium until the construction of the Lehmann Building in 1972. Dr. Peter Wyse Jackson was struck by the historic nature of the Museum when he became Garden president in 2010, and called for a $3 million renovation and restoration program. “I think it’s one of the most historic buildings in St. Louis,” Wyse Jackson told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in the spring of 2011. “We don’t want it to be hidden anymore.” The Garden seeks to restore and renovate this historic architectural and botanical treasure and use it as

a space to host a varied program of events and botanically-themed exhibits focused on ethnobotany, economic botany, endangered plants, Garden history and the Garden’s remarkable scientific achievements. The space will also serve as a future event venue available for rent.

Support the reopening of the Museum with your contribution to the Garden for the World campaign. In preparing this treasure for modern audiences, the Garden will: Create an exhibit venue showcasing artifacts on ethnobotany, endangered plants and Garden history

Construct an addition on the building's east side with a fully accessible entrance, an elevator and updated and expanded restrooms Build accessible pathways and enhance gardens on the building's perimeter Restore the lower level's historic architectural features and create a

new exhibit space Conserve the ceiling mural Restore the stairwell, floors and cabinets Upgrade electrical, fire protection and heating and cooling systems Protect the building through tuckpointing, drainage improvements, waterproofing and window repairs

“The Munsters” are coming to Greenville Car Show

It may look like Halloween in June as two of the stars of the classic television show “The Munsters” will be the celebrity guests at this year’s Greenville (Illinois) Graffiti Car Show. Butch Patrick (Eddie Munster) and Pat Priest (Marilyn Munster) will meet fans and sign autographs on Saturday, June 20 during the show. Replicas of the Munster Koach and Dragula, prominently featured on the program, will also be making an appearance. Patrick was a popular child star who also made guest appearances on many shows of the 1960s including “Bonanza”, “Gunsmoke” and “Rawhide”. Patrick’s work as Eddie, the son of Herman and Lily Munster, made him a TV icon. In the early 1970s Patrick was the star of “Lidsville”, a quirky Saturday morning show produced by Sid and Marty Krofft.

opportunity to see television history in person. Butch Patrick, Pat Priest, the Munster Koach, and the Drag-ula may also be seen at the Munster’s Ball, a special event to be held on Friday, June 19 at the American Farm Heritage Museum in Greenville. This ticketed event includes a question and answer session with the stars, photo opportunities, food, and other fun. Ticket information about the Munster’s Ball may be obtained by calling the Greenville Chamber of Commerce at (618) 664-9272. The Greenville Graffiti Car Show on Saturday, June 20 is open to 1990 and older cars and trucks for judging. Vehicles may also be brought for display. For the first time, motorcycles may be brought for display only. Last year ’s event attracted nearly 190 cars and trucks to downtown Greenville, Illinois.

Priest took over the role of Marilyn Munster in the show’s 16th episode. Perhaps her best k n o w n ro l e o u t s i d e o f “ T h e Munsters” came in 1967 when she co-starred with Elvis Presley in the movie “Easy Come, Easy Go”. She was also a guest on other iconic programs like “Perry Mason”, “Bewitched” and “Mission Impossible”. Car show organizers are excited to have the Munster Koach and Drag-ula on display that day. The original vehicles were the creation of George Barris, a legendary designer and maker of cars used in television shows and movies. The Munster Koach, Herman Munster’s preferred method of transportation, was created from three Model T bodies. The Drag-ula, built by Grandpa Munster and used by Herman in a classic episode of the show, was made using a real fiberglass coffin. This is a rare

In a unique partnership, the Nine Network of Public Media and the St. Louis Symphony have combined resources to produce a new, monthly television series, Night at the Symphony. It will be broadcast on Nine PBS on the first Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. beginning January 5, 2015, and rebroadcast the following Sunday at 3:00 p.m. beginning January 11. Nine episodes will air in 2015. The hour-long programs will highlight specially selected St. Louis Symphony performances from the 2014–2015 season, as well as encore presentations of concert specials produced since 2012. “This is the only partnership of its kind in the nation between a public television station and a symphony orchestra,” said Patrick Murphy, vice president of production for the Nine Network. “The opportunity to bring the experience of one of the world’s finest orchestras into every home in our region shows what is possible when cultural institutions work together for the benefit of the community.” “When we first started our partnership five years ago, I never would have expected it to evolve into what it’s become,” said Adam Crane, vice president for external affairs at the St. Louis Symphony. “We’ve learned so much along the way, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our musicians and staff, as well as the Nine Network team. The orchestra's mission is to enrich people’s lives through the power of music, and Night at the Symphony embodies this." “In a season full of special anniversaries for the St. Louis Symphony, the genesis of Night at the Symphony is a terrific way to celebrate,” said Music Director David Robertson. “It’s another way that audiences can enjoy our worldclass orchestra and we’re grateful to the Nine Network for the new opportunity to continue to share our music with the community.” “Our partnership with the St. Louis Symphony is a shining example of what can be achieved through creative collaboration and commitment to a common objective,” said Nine Network President and CEO Jack Galmiche. “It is particularly exciting for us to add this unprecedented series to our extensive local and national arts programming.” The programming lineup for Night at the Symphony through 2015 is as follows (the series will not air in March, June and December): May 4 David Robertson conducts pieces by Brahms, Rosas, Ravel, Alfven, Borodin, Bartók and Ginastera with featured violinists Eva Kozma and Silvian Iticovici. July 6 Conductor David Robertson leads the symphony and cellist Alvin McCall in the performance of works by Copland, Ives and MacDowell. The year wraps up with encore performances of concerts previously presented on Nine PBS: August 4, September 7, October 5, and November 3. For more information about Night at the Symphony, visit the web page nineNet.org/Symphony. About the Nine Network of Public Media The Nine Network of Public

Media is a multifaceted organization creating a network of individuals and organizations empowered by public media to strengthen civic life. One of the nation’s most watched public television stations, Nine offers the people of the St. Louis region multiple ways to explore the world and become engaged in civic life, including four distinct broadcast channels (Nine PBS, Nine World, Nine Create and Nine Kids), the Nine Center for Public Engagement, www.nineNet.org and the Public Media Commons. The Nine Network’s rich legacy of serving the community was launched in 1954 and continues through our mission of bringing St. Louis together as we connect our region to the world and the world to St. Louis. About the St. Louis Symphony Founded in 1880 and now in its 135th season, the St. Louis Symphony is the second-oldest orchestra in the country and widely considered one of the world’s finest. In September 2005, internationally acclaimed conductor David Robertson became the 12th Music Director, the second Americanborn conductor to hold that post in the Orchestra’s history. The St. Louis Symphony strives for artistic excellence, fiscal responsibility and community connection while meeting its mission statement: enriching people’s live through the power of music. The Symphony presents a full season of classical programs and Live at Powell Hall

concerts and hundreds of free education and community programs each year. Media partners include St. Louis Public Radio, 90.7–KWMU, which broadcasts the Symphony’s Saturday night subscription concerts live, and the Nine Network, which regularly features STL Symphony performances on its Night at the Symphony program. www. stlsymphony.org

Missouri History Museum to exhibit Nazi Propaganda The Nazi Party developed a sophisticated propaganda machine that deftly spread lies about its political opponents, Jews, and the need to justify war. But Nazi p ro p a g a n d a w a s m u c h m o re complex than that. For the Nazis to achieve power and pursue their racial policies and expansionist war efforts, a much more nuanced picture had to be painted—one that would appeal to broad swaths of the population, not just a fanatical extreme. Featuring rarely seen artifacts, State of Deception: The Power of Nazi Propaganda draws visitors into a rich multimedia environment vividly illustrating the insidious allure of much of Nazi propaganda. The exhibition opens at the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park on April 11, 2015 and will be on display

through September 7, 2015. “Adolf Hitler was an avid student of propaganda and borrowed techniques from the Allies in World War I, his Socialist and Communist rivals, the Italian Fascist Party, as well as modern advertising,” says exhibition curator Steven Luckert. “Drawing upon these models, he successfully marketed the Nazi Party, its ideology, and himself to the German people.” The exhibition reveals how shortly after World War I, the Nazi Party began to transform itself from an obscure, extremist group into the largest political party in democratic Germany. Hitler early on recognized how propaganda, combined with the use of terror, could help his radical party gain mass support and votes. He personally adapted the ancient symbol of the swastika and the emotive colors of red, black, and white to create the movement’s flag. In doing so, Hitler established a potent visual identity that has branded the Nazi Party ever since. After seizing power, the Nazi Party took over all communications in Germany. It marshaled the state’s resources to consolidate power and relentlessly promote its vision of a “racially pure,” utopian Germany that needed to defend itself from those who would destroy it. Jews were cast as the primary enemies, but others, including Roma, homosexuals, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and mentally and physically disabled persons, were also portrayed as

threats to the “national community.” As Germany pushed the world into war, Nazi propaganda rationalized Germany’s territorial expansion as self-defense. Jews were depicted as agents of disease and corruption. The Nazis’ actions against them, in Germany and occupied countries, were promoted as necessary measures to protect the population at large. Admission to State of Deception is free. The Missouri History Museum has been active in the St. Louis community since 1866. Founding members established the organization “for the purpose of saving from oblivion the early history of the city and state.” Today, the Missouri History Museum seeks to deepen the understanding of past choices, present circumstances, and future possibilities; strengthen the bonds of the community; and facilitate solutions to common problems. Due to its innovative approach to public service, the Missouri History Museum was the first recipient of the Institute of Museum and Library Services National Award for Museum Services in 1994. The Missouri History Museum offers programs and outreach services, including traveling exhibitions; tours; theatrical and musical presentations; programs for school classes and youth groups; family festivals; special events; workshops; and lectures.

Religion Religion briefs Arkansas governor OKs bill allowing Ten Commandments display

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas' governor has approved legislation that will allow a monument to the Ten Commandments to be built near the state Capitol. A spokesman for Gov. Asa Hutchinson on Wednesday said the governor had signed the bill requiring the state to allow a privately funded display of the commandments to be built on the state Capitol grounds. Lawmakers sent the measure to Hutchinson last week. Supporters of the proposal have said the monument would honor the role the commandments have played in the history of the nation's judicial system. Opponents have criticized the move and said it would amount to a state endorsement of religion. The location and design of the monument must be approved by the secretary of state.

North Korea says it deports American for plotting, making videos

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea says an American woman who frequently visited the North over nearly 20 years has been deported for what the communist regime calls "plotbreeding and propaganda." The announcement by North Korea's state media alleged that the woman traveled to North Korea "under the pretense of 'humanitarianism,'" but had secretly produced and directed anti-North Korean videos because of her "inveterate repugnancy" toward Pyongyang. The American was identified as Suh Sandra, likely following Korean style of using the surname first. Wheat Mission Ministries, a Christian aid organization based in Los Angeles, identifies Sandra Suh as its founder. The ministry's website says its mission is "to share the love

"201 5 wi l l be a n o t h e r b i g , adventurous season, " said Muny Artistic Director and Executive Producer Mike Isaacson. "During the past three seasons, we've expanded our creativity and energized our productions. The response from the Muny audience and the community has been nothing short of wonderful. This audience inspires us to keep on pushing ourselves and our vision, so now we're off to make more "Muny magic" with these seven spectacular shows." “In 2015, audiences will be delighted by our bold and exciting productions of beloved classics and the most popular titles from our audience survey,” said Muny President and CEO Denny Reagan. "In the past 3 seasons, our productions have soared to unimaginable heights under the first-class artistic direction of Mike Isaacson. His passion and creativity have brought a welcome burst of energy to The Muny, and with the recent extension of Mike’s contract, the wonderful collaboration we have shared for his first three seasons will continue to produce years of magical moments for Muny audiences.” World Wide Technology (WWT) and The Steward Family Foundation have once again made a leadership gift to continue as the Muny’s 2015 Season Presenting Sponsor. They became the first overall season sponsor in the 97-year history of The Muny in 2014 and will now continue in that role through 2015. “Both WWT and The Steward Family Foundation are committed to The Muny and to making exceptional musical theatre accessible to everyone,” said David Steward, chairman and founder of WWT. This year’s season promises to be spectacular and will showcase how much the performing arts enrich our community.” Not seen at The Muny since 2008, Lerner and Loewe’s classic My Fair Lady tells the story of Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl who takes speech lessons from professor Henry Higgins, a phoneticist, so that she may pass as a lady. Based on George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion, My Fair Lady features the classic songs of Lerner and Loewe, such as “On The Street Where You Live,” “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “I’ve Grown Accustomed To Her Face,” and “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly?” Winner of the 2003 Tony ® Award for Best Musical, Hairspray returns to the Muny for 9 performances. Come join Tracy Turnblad and “the nicest kids in town” as they reach for their dream of performing on a TV dance show in 1960s Baltimore - and work to integrate the show in the process.

10

Based on the 1988 John Waters Film of the same name, Hairspray features such award-winning songs as “Good Morning Baltimore,” “It Takes Two,” “I Know Where I’ve Been,” and “You Can’t Stop The Beat!” Making its Muny and Mid-west premiere, Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn dances its way onto the Muny stage, telling the story of a Connecticut farmhouse transformed into a jubilant nightspot and hotel that is only open on holidays! Based on the 1942 film starring Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire, Holiday Inn features such Irving Berlin classics as “Steppin’ Out With My Baby,” “Shakin’ The Blues Away,” “Be Careful, It’s My Heart,” and more! Making its Muny premiere, Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story is a musical based on the life and career of early rock and roller Buddy Holly. Opening in 1989, the musical initially ran in London’s West End for over 12 years, and premiered on Broadway in 1990. One of the first so-called “jukebox musicals,” this show features the songs of Buddy Holly and other early rockers, including classics like “That’ll Be The Day,” “Johnny B. Goode,” “Peggy Sue,” and “Why Do Fools Fall in Love?” Stephen Sondheim and James

Lapine’s Into The Woods makes its Muny premiere. Winner of 5 Tony ® Awards, this musical intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales and follows them to explore the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. Journey with the Baker and his wife, as they work to lift the Witch’s spell with the help of Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (and the bean stalk), Rapunzel, Cinderella and others. Returning to the Muny stage for 10 performances, Disney’s Beauty and The Beast tells the magical story of a prince who is transformed into a hideous beast as punishment for his cruel and selfish ways, and an adventurous young woman named Belle whom he imprisons in his enchanted castle. In order to become human again, the Beast must earn Belle’s love before it’s too late. Based on the 1991 film of the same name, Beauty and The Beast features the music of the award-winning composing team of Alan Menken, Howard Ashman and Tim Rice. The Pulitzer Prize winning Oklahoma! returns to Forest Park in grand style. The first Muny production since 2007, this Rodgers and Hammerstein classic features an unforgettable story and lush score

including such classic hits as “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’,” “The Surrey With the Fringe on Top,” “People Will Say We’re in Love,” and of course, “Oklahoma!” To get preferred seating with new season tickets, purchase a Muny Season Ticket Gift Card, available now.

With dancers set in motion to the rhythmic beats of samba, bossa nova and electronic music, this show is a savvy, wild mash-up of innovative, dynamic choreography that promises to be one of the most entertaining highlights of the year. Compagnie Käfig is the brainchild of Mourad Merzouki, a native of Lyon, France who studied martial arts and circus arts as a child and was influenced by hip-hop as a teen. Since 1996, the company has expanded the language of hip-hop by cleverly introducing a wide range of influences, ranging from Bollywood, Russian dance and contemporary dance to samba and capoeira to Merzouki’s own expertise in circus and martial arts. By avoiding social stereotypes, Compagnie Käfig has managed to create its own unique style that does not deny its hiphop origins, but rather enables the hip-hop movement to win over diverse audiences around the world.

"Get Hard"

While the stereotypes in "Get Hard" may be gross exaggerations, its characters live in the real world: A place where the chasm between rich and poor is vast and growing; where black men are disproportionately jailed and white-collar criminals often evade punishment. In this comedy from first-time director Etan Cohen, James (Will Ferrell) is a Los Angeles millionaire hedge-fund investor whose life of indulgence and ignorance is interrupted by a surprise prison sentence for fraud. He turns to the guy who runs the company car wash, Darnell (Kevin Hart) — apparently the only black person he has ever met — and asks for help to prepare for 10 years in maximum security. Darnell has no jail experience, but he agrees because he needs money to buy a home in a better school district for his little girl. When Darnell's wife, Rita (Edwina Findley Dickerson) — the film's only voice of reason — asks what he did to give the impression he had a criminal record, he replies, "I was being black." Darnell's pre-jail prep class includes transforming his student's Bel-Air mansion into a pretend prison, the household staff gleefully becoming its guards. Lessons include getting James in shape, teaching him how to fight and encouraging him to practice oral sex on men. The first yields some laughs as the 6-foot-3 Ferrell uses the diminutive Hart as a barbell. But forced sex isn't funny, no matter who's doing the forcing or the gender of the parties involved. "Get Hard" traffics in other crude humor involving more than one look at Farrell's naked tush and a tiring amount of puns on the film's title. Darnell knows one real ex-con, his cousin Russell (an ultracharismatic Tip "T.I." Harris), whom he turns to for actual help for James behind bars. James hits it off with Russell and his gangster pals when he shows them how they can "liquidate two bricks of cocaine" into hedge funds to make more money. "Wall Street, man. Those are the real criminals," one gangster says. Right. This is supposed to be a parody of the One Percent. The film is guilty of occasionally underlining its jokes like this. James even uses the phrase "teachable moment" after a heated racial encounter — and not ironically. But when Darnell misses all of James' literary references, is that satire, or is it racist and classist? RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "pervasive crude and sexual content and language, some graphic nudity, and drug material." RUNNING TIME: 99 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

"Furious 7"

Fast-moving fight scenes, outrageous auto antics and a sprinkling of ridiculous one-liners make "Furious 7" a campy, crowd-pleasing escape. Never mind that the film repeatedly presents the impossible — a muscle car attacks an airborne helicopter — fans of the franchise know to suspend disbelief at the door. With nonstop action from start to finish, it's easy — if a bit exhausting — to go along for the high-speed ride. Reality intrudes at the end: The film is dedicated to Paul Walker, who died in a car crash in 2013, and concludes with a montage of images of the actor from his five previous "Fast and Furious" appearances. Walker's brothers acted as standins and special effects were used to maintain his presence throughout his final film, which was still in production when he died. There are a couple of creepy allusions to his death in the film that could briefly jar viewers. At one point, Roman (Tyrese Gibson) asks Brian (Walker) to promise their team won't face any more funerals. When Brian replies, "Just one more," he's

12

On the Edge of the Weekend

referring to that of the film's villain (Jason Statham), but one can't help but think of the actor's own accidental death. Another scene shows Brian telling wife Mia (Jordana Brewster) that if she doesn't hear from him after the crew's latest mission, she should "move on." It almost feels like a message to his co-stars. Like its predecessors, the seventh installment of the hit franchise features a multicultural cast, international settings and a dazzling array of cars. While this critic is partial to American muscle cars, the $3.5 million Lykan Hypersport from Dubai-based W Motors is incredible to see. Only seven such vehicles exist. (No Lykan Hypersports were harmed during the making of the film.) RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "prolonged frenetic sequences of violence, action and mayhem, suggestive content and brief strong language." RUNNING TIME: 140 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Woman in Gold"

"Woman in Gold" has a rich story to tell. The true account of Maria Altmann's fight to reclaim a famed Gustav Klimt painting of her aunt, "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I," first stolen by the Nazis and then appropriated by Austria after the war, is laced with riveting history, deep and complex emotion, and fascinating bureaucracy. Yet director Simon Curtis's rendering of Altmann's tale, though respectful and pretty, is somehow lifeless. There is almost too much here for a single movie. Curtis, who charmed with his Marilyn Monroe slice of life "My Week with Marilyn," relies on a combination of flashbacks of Maria's pre-war life in Vienna and the present day tick-tock of her legal quest to take ownership of the painting. Played in the present by Helen Mirren, Maria is a prickly woman with a thick Austrian accent. She owns a boutique in a fancy part of Los Angeles and, following the death of her sister, has made up her mind that she would like to claim what is hers. The man she convinces to help her is Randy Schoenberg (Ryan Reynolds), a dull corporate lawyer with a prestigious pedigree and a few poor career choices on his resume. It's been over 60 years since Maria fled Austria during World War II and she is sickened by the thought of returning, refusing to even speak the language when they arrive abroad to plead their case. In Vienna, they're helped by a young native journalist (Daniel Brühl) who functions mostly as a human exposition vehicle. With two actors as charming as Mirren and Reynolds anchoring the story, it's a bit disarming that their charisma never really manages to energize the sluggish tale. Part of that is for effect — they're supposed to grow to love and admire one another while he learns to respect her history — but the eventual payoff doesn't connect. These characters aren't equipped to deliver the lively generational comedy that this story so desperately needs. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "some thematic elements and brief strong language." RUNNING TIME: 110 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

"True Story"

Michael Finkel's journalism career, torpedoed by a partly fabricated story, had just bottomed out when a phone call came asking why a man accused of murdering his wife and three children in Oregon was identifying himself "Mike Finkel, New York Times." That was the identification Christian Longo gave the FBI when they arrested him in Mexico in February 2002 for the four Oregon homicides. The timing was, in a strange way,

April 23, 2015

fortuitous for Finkel. His string of New York Times Magazine covers had come to an abrupt and scandalous end when it was discovered that his piece on Ivory Coast cocoa plantations invented a composite character. Finkel, nursing his wounds back at his Montana home, wrote to Longo in prison while he awaited trial: "At the same time that you were using my name, I lost my own." Their resulting meetings quickly led to a 2005 book, partly about Longo, partly a mea culpa for Finkel. Now it's a movie starring Jonah Hill as Finkel and James Franco as Longo. It's not the bromance you may have been expecting between the two, but it's a bromance nevertheless. "True Story" has its issues — neither Franco nor Hill, talented as they are, are suited to their parts — but its biggest problem is at its heart. In grafting Finkel's selfserving story of career revival onto a grisly tragedy, "True Story," though handsomely made, is entirely misguided. When the final credits dramatically inform us that Finkel never again wrote for the Times, the movie has laughably overestimated our sympathies for the disgraced reporter's resume. "True Story," the feature debut of the British theater director Rupert Goold, was clearly conceived as a way to play with truth versus fiction in storytelling (a favorite topic of Franco's). The film is its own dramatization of real events, of course, too. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "language and some disturbing material." RUNNING TIME: 99 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

"Ex Machina"

Cinema has always been fascinated by androids. From "Metropolis" to "Blade Runner," the juxtaposition of humans next to their artificial form has provided endless hours of stories that can be as exhilarating as they are poignant. Tough moral questions about consciousness and humanity go down easier when hidden under the glossy sheen of genre, after all. With so many now-classics preceding it, "Ex Machina" might seem like just the latest flavor in the android movie shop. And yet, without necessarily expanding on this well-trod territory or innovating contemporary science-fiction, by going deep on a simple construct, "Ex Machina" establishes itself as a unique and deeply unsettling psychological thriller that's both necessary and unforgettable. The construct in question: How good is this android? Writer-director Alex Garland in his feature debut tells the story with basically only three characters: Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson), the sharp programmer whose life is upended to spend a few days in a remote location with his company's billionaire CEO and brilliant recluse, Nathan (Oscar Isaac); and Nathan's creation, Ava (Alicia Vikander). Caleb thinks he's won a prize and a retreat with a genius. It's only when he arrives that Nathan tells him his real purpose is to advise Nathan on whether or not Ava passes the human or machine test. Nathan's home embodies the modern design ideal of organic architecture and he and Caleb discuss Ava as Schubert and Bach play faintly in the background. Big, fascinating ideas fly around at rapid speed, but "should" does not seem to be in their vocabulary. Garland builds a subtle tension by making everything slightly off, from the concrete, bunker-like bedrooms, to the occasional power-outages and the militaristic security methods. Caleb is never at ease and, as the audience's window into this strange world, neither are we. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "for graphic nudity, language, sexual references and some violence." RUNNING TIME: 108 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.

"True Story" beautiful but misguided By JAKE COYLE Associated Press M i c h a e l F i n k e l ' s j o u r n a l i s m c a re e r, torpedoed by a partly fabricated story, had just bottomed out when a phone call came asking why a man accused of murdering his wife and three children in Oregon was identifying himself "Mike Finkel, New York Times." "True Story" has its issues — neither Franco nor Hill, talented as they are, are suited to their parts — but its biggest problem is at its heart. In grafting Finkel's self-serving story of career revival onto a grisly tragedy, "True Story," though handsomely made, is entirely misguided. The film is its own

dramatization of real events, of course, too. Finkel's downfall is caused by a desire to use the techniques of fiction for nonfiction. Longo, a fan of the reporter, says he'll meet with Finkel exclusively on the condition that he teaches him how to write. So at the center of the film, which Goold co-wrote with David Kajganich, are the conversations between the two. A friendship develops and there's apparent chemistry between the two stars, but the kind of menacing tension the film needs is missing. A comedy routine between the smirking Franco and the alert, usually combustible Hill seems to always be lurking just off camera.

A tepid result of a great story By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge I keep confusing my colors. If I had a nickel for every time that I've mistakenly called the new film release "The Woman in Gold" as The Woman in Black, I'd have enough money to recast it with Irene Ryan and refer to it as The Woman in Black Gold: Texas Tea. Too far to go for a bad joke? I think not, but you'll ultimately be the judge of that as you continue reading. The movie is kind of a tepid result of what is a great real story - featuring two fine actors - about a subject (elements of the Holocaust) that never loses its importance in our storytelling. That it's earning lackluster reviews and doing poorly in release is not

indicative of why it will stick with you. That, as usually is the case, is left up to Dame Helen Mirren and her beguiling spirit. " T h e Wo m a n i n G o l d " i s a slightly misleading title. The famous portrait by Gustav Klimt that is the impetus of the story is actually titled Adele Bloch-Bauer I and it was painted in 1907, long before the Nazis ever came to power in Germany. Adele was the aunt of Maria Altmann (Mirren), a Jewish Austrian woman who fled to Los Angeles with her family to avoid the early stages of World War II and Hitler's railing injustices against her people. The movie is set over the course of a decade in which Altmann sued the Austrian government to have the Klimt (and four of his other works) returned

to her family's ownership after they were looted from their Vienna home decades before. The truelife timing of these events makes for a very interesting read, much of it stemming from Austria's decision to start reexamining some of the ways they handled war crimes in their own country's past. Investigative journalist Hubertus Czernin (Daniel Bruhl) brings the specific instance of Klimt's masterworks to the world's attention in the late '90s, prompting Maria to enlists a young attorney named E. Randol Schoenberg (Ryan Reynolds) to help her in the pursuit. Their relationship is not one that is fleeting, even if he (rightly) surmises that Altmann's own motivations are largely drive by revenge at times. He ultimately

takes her plea all the way to the United States Supreme Court. " T h e Wo m a n i n G o l d " w a s directed by Simon Curtis (My Week with Marilyn) and is based on a screenplay by British playwright Alexi Kaye Campbell (The Pride), but this one's all about their lead. Mirren is a treasure. She always wraps her characters into a bundle of warmth and cheeriness that comes from the Oscar winner's own boisterous spirit. She's Russian-born and played some bad characters over the years (the RED movies, for instances), but I've never felt that she wasn't genuine, kind, and a little playful on the side. When someone asked me last week if I'd seen The Queen, it only took me a second to realize that they were inaccurately naming this

April 23, 2015

film after Mirren's 2006 Academy Award-winning turn as Elizabeth II. Somewhat differently, Reynolds' character is compared to James Bond at one point in this movie. It's a throw-away laugh, but really highlights the fact that the actor is really miscast. He's not a bad performer, but the high drama mark that this picture aims for (and largely misses) is well outside of his wheelhouse. Tatiana Maslany (TV's Orphan Black) plays the young Maria in flashback sequences. Elizabeth McGovern and Katie Holmes also have small parts. "The Woman in Gold" runs 109 minutes and is rated PG-13 for some thematic elements and brief strong language. I give this film one and a half stars out of four.

Dining Delights

Bill Roseberry/The Edge

A Scotch egg and pale ale mustard sauce at Square One Brewery in Lafayette Square. Below, The bratwurst burger topped with sauerkraut and pale ale mustard on a pretzel bun.

Square One Brewery in Lafayette Square By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge A while back I went on an expedition to St. Louis with some friends to check out a beer festival. On deliberation we realized if we were going to spend an evening sampling craft beers it would be a good idea to put some food in our bellies, which in turn got me thinking about “you gotta eat.” It gave me an opportunity to check out a spot in Lafayette Square that I have heard good things about — Square One Brewery and Distillery. Square One is located at 1727 Park Ave. and 18th St. Opening as a micro brewery and restaurant in February of 2006, it expanded into Missouri's first micro distillery and restaurant in August of 2008. It was actually one of the first micro distillery restaurants in the United States. On the night my group visited though we weren't there for the beer or spirits. On top of those unique offerings, Square One also offers an eclectic menu spanning from Korean and Japanese choices, to Mexican, to German and English cuisine, adding its own twist in most cases. I thought the diverse selections would make the entire group happy and I was right. I, of course, was thinking ahead and found some food selections that I thought would sit well with a night of beer sampling. I de c i d e d t o st a r t w i t h a n appetizer from across the pond that I've always wanted to try, but haven't had the opportunity — a Scotch egg. A delectable dish originating in the United Kingdom, the Scotch egg has always intrigued me. Simple enough, it is comprised of a hard

14

boiled egg, encased in sausage, covered in bread crumbs and either baked or fried. At Square One it is fried and served with their pale ale mustard dipping sauce. I always thought it was a cool idea. After all, how can you mess up a hard boiled egg wrapped in sausage and fried? My buddy Joe echoed the same sentiment because he decided to join me in ordering a Scotch egg. Unfortunately neither of us were very satisfied. We agreed that the sausage was well overcooked, almost burnt. The egg on the inside was fine and the pale ale mustard was a superb companion for this dish, actually softening the blow of the overcooked sausage. Needless to say we were both quite

On the Edge of the Weekend

disappointed. My buddy Dave went with an appetizer too, ordering the beer pretzels. They were soft pretzel sticks served with the pale ale mustard and a jalapeno cheese dipping sauce. The pretzels were very good and Dave was more than satisfied with his choice. Now it was time to turn our attention to our main course. This time Dave and I were on the same page, both delving into German cuisine by ordering bratwurst burgers. The brat burger at Square One is served on a pretzel bun, piled with savory sauerkraut and topped with the pale ale mustard. Dave ruined his by removing the sauerkraut, but

April 23, 2015

as a sauerkraut aficionado I wasn't that stupid. I've had brat burgers in the past and a lot of times they disappoint. They seldom taste like a b r a t w u r s t . Wi t h t h e s e preconceptions I don't know why I went with one on my Square One visit, but I'm glad I did. It was easily the best brat burger I've ever eaten and Dave seconded that notion. It tasted like what it's supposed to taste like — a bratwurst. The sauerkraut and pale ale mustard added much appreciated flavor to the delectable burger, too. Companioned with pub chips, they were good also. Joe, Rachel and Amanda all went

with the pub burger, a ½ pound of ground chuck on a kaiser roll with all the fixings. Joe tossed a fried egg on his for good measure. All three thought the burgers were good. As for the ambiance at Square One, it is huge. We were ushered into the back dining area on our visit, but there is a big bar in the front of the building. It has plenty of space for large parties and is set up for a social atmosphere. The rest of the menu includes, a salad portion, soups, appetizers and entrees. The pan seared crab cakes and tempura calamari jumped out at me on the appetizer menu. The smoked flank steak chili with straw onions and cheese also sounds delicious. On the entrees portion of the menu, the shrimp and grits are a staple. They are served with shrimp and Andouille sausage, Cajun cream sauce and creamy jalapeno and cheddar grits. I was also intrigued by the smoked salmon BLT. It is served on a brioche bun with mixed greens, bacon, tomatoes and herbed mayo. There are plenty of other choices listed on Square One's large and diverse menu. You can check it out at www.squareonebrewery.com. They are also proud of their beers, which can only be purchased there. They have rotating beers on tap listed on the website. Price-wise, it wasn't bad. My brat burger and Scotch egg tallied up to $13 before tax and I didn't go away hungry. I would love to go back, try some more of Square One's beers and try those scrumptious-sounding shrimp and grits. It's more than just a satisfying spot to visit when you gotta eat.

Dining Delights The Ege's own Bill Roseberry, famous for his You Gotta' Eat restaurant reviews, has put together his thoughts on a number of local eateries. Enjoy. Pirronne’s Pizzeria 1775 Washington St. Florissant The pizza here is amazing. They use provel cheese and have a slew of ingredients to go on top of their thin crust pies. During the day they have a great buffet lunch special, which also has a salad bar and soups and appetizers. Frank’s Restaurant 132 West Macarthur Dr. Cottage Hills It is an extensive menu with all kinds of choices, including breakfast selections, sandwiches, steaks, fish, pasta dishes and it’s cheap. Did I mention that it’s cheap? 1860’s Hardshell Café and Saloon 1860 S. 9th St., St. Louis Soulard A great place to get some Cajun and Creole food and have a good time to boot. It’s split into two sides, with the dining area on one end with great items like crab legs, gumbo, po’ boy sandwiches, red beans and rice and wonderful crab cakes. The other half of the building offers a full bar and live entertainment. Lotawata Creek Southern Grill 311 Salem Pl. Fairview Heights Fatten yourself up at this joint. The menu is ridiculously huge and the portions are even bigger. Get your own plate of fries for a side, or a bucket of onion rings. It offers a creative sandwich portion of the menu and great southern-style dishes, try the Mac Daddy Burger. You won’t go away hungry here, trust me. 1818 Chophouse 210 S. Buchanan St. Edwardsville This is a great place to grab a steak diinner, that is their signature dish. A good place for a fancy dinner date, the ambience in the dining area is fantastic. It offers extensive breakfast, brunch and dinner menus, but be prepared to pay, it’s pretty expensive. Sybergs Old Dorsett Rd. Maryland Heights A St. Louis chain restaurant where you can’t go wrong. Check out their awesome selection of pizzas and hot wings and their house-made sauces are fantastic. Be adventurous and try the shark bites, they are delicious. Johnson’s Corner Restaurant 2000 State St. Alton It’s a great neighborhood bar and restaurant. Sit at the bar and have a few drinks with a friendly staff and patrons. As for the food, get your hands on the best breaded pork tenderloin sandwich ever and check out the monster onion rings, too. Oriental Spoon 229 Sanatorium Edwardsville A Korean restaurant where you can’t go wrong. The Kimchi is very good as an appetizer and make sure to check out their bulgogi and bap selections. Make sure to ask your server about spiciness levels if you can’t handle hotness very well. Schiappa’s Italian Restaurant 402 S. Madison St. Lebanon A quiet pizzeria that offers plenty more than just pizza. Make sure to check out the great calzones on the menu. Wasabi Sushi Bar 100 S. Buchanan St. Edwardsville If you’re into sushi then this is a good place to check out. Choose from a big selection of rolls, from the California and spicy tuna rolls to great choices like the Batman and the Caterpillar. From unagi (eel), to sea urchin, salmon, shrimp and tuna, it has it all. Order the edamame on the appetizer menu. Joe’s Pizza & Pasta 4 Club Centre Ct. Edwardsville The sweet tomato sauce makes this place a treasure. There are plenty of pizza choices for toppings and even without their classic sauce. Check out the Sicilian to get an olive oil-

based sauce, it’s good too. You can dine-in or get delivery here. J. Gumbo’s 3949 Lindell Blvd., St. Louis Central West End This is a chain restaurant, but it doesn’t feel that way. Check out the St. Louis location at 3949 Lindell Blvd. to get some really good Cajun and Creole food quick and cheap. Make sure to check out the crawfish etoufeé. The menu does a really good job of informing you of spiciness levels. Joanie’s Pizzeria 2101 Menard St., St. Louis Soulard A stable in the Soulard neighborhood in St. Louis, this is a spot that offers great pizza and Italian dishes along with great drink specials and entertainment. Visit prior to a Cardinals game or other various events in St. Louis, eat dinner, and ride the free shuttle to and from the event. Los Tres Amigos 1011 Century Dr. Edwardsville The Jose Morales Taco is the highlight of this Mexican Restaurant. The deep fried goodness of the taco is topped off with Parmesan cheese to give it that special flavor. Check out the rest of the extensive menu for other great Mexican dishes, too. Wang Gang Asian Eats 1035 Century Dr. Edwardsville This is a hip, fun spot if you’re into Asian cuisine. It’s an Asian fusion restaurant that puts unique spins on classic Asian dishes. Check out the lettuce wraps, the fried calamari and the stir fry selections and don’t miss out on the restaurant’s own line of sodas which are also great. It offers some healthy choices, too. Brickhouse Tavern & Tap 2 McBride and Son Center Dr. Chesterfield This is a great place to take a date or have a good time with a group of friends. Fun and creative menu and huge line of beers on tap and in bottles. Enjoy your meal sitting on a couch in front of a fire. The real all-star here are the bacon and jalapenó deviled eggs on the appetizer menu. The LuBar & Bistro 911 Fairfax St. Carlyle Pretty cool place to chill out and have a good dinner. The dining area is separated from the bar, as this establishment is split into two levels. The LuBar nachos are arguably the best nachos I’ve ever had and the pulled pork sandwich is a winner. Check out the full breakfast menu also and don’t forget to order some ice cream from the ice cream bar before you leave. Fazzi’s Bar and Restaurant 1813 Vandalia St. Collinsville Opa! You’ll probably hear this a few times here as patrons order the signature appetizer dish, Saganaki, consisting of breaded goat cheese which is doused in oil and set on fire. This Greek and Italian restaurant is very affordable and has some great choices, including the Mousaka. The gyro plate isn’t bad either. Mini Corral Hamburgers

1500 Main St. Alton Small shack that serves great mini burgers, French fries and onion things. Nothing special on aesthetics, get your food in a greasy white box but its been a staple in Alton for a long time. King Louie’s Drive-In S. 6th St. Wood River This is an old-style drive-in restaurant where you can still order your meal from you car. Great burgers and fries and make sure to check out the fried cauliflower. Their root beer soda is also fantastic. There is also a dining area where you can go inside. Bigelo’s Bistro 140 N. Main St. Edwardsville It has classic sandwiches and a cool atmosphere to have lunch or chill out with some friends. It can get a little pricey for what it is, but it’s well worth it. Make sure to check out the Pigggelo and the Chicken Guy for a couple of great sandwiches. 106 N. Main St. Edwardsville

Cleveland-Heath

Great place for a dinner date, intimate seating and the eclectic menu is amazing. Expect a wait, it gets busy. Plenty of unique creations to choose from, but make sure to check out the awesome sweet potato fries. A must to try here is the beignets off of the dessert menu. They practically melt in your mouth. Prepare to pay, it’s a little pricey. Ruiz Mexican Restaurant 901 N. Hwy 67 Florissant Good Mexican restaurant with a large menu. It’s great for a date spot with quiet secluded booths. Check out the fajitas or the create your own menu. It also offers a full bar. Castelli’s Restaurant at 255 3400 Fosterburg Rd. Alton This place is a staple in Alton. It’s a great place to take a date due to the intimate setting. Great food, make sure to check out the fried chicken and their awesome house salad. It also has plenty more to choose from. Geno’s 140 Club 120 W. Bethalto Blvd. Bethalto It is a great place to wind down at the bar and watch the game with a burger and fries or head to the back dining area for a nice, quiet dining experience. It offers an extensive menu, from burgers, to steaks, to Mexican, to Italian. Make sure to check out the Geno’s stromboli and the line of horseshoes available. The pork tenderloin sandwich is pretty good, too. Fast Eddie’s Bon Air 1530 E. 4th St. Alton Check out the cheapest food around in a fun atmosphere. Order a Fat Eddie Burger or a Big Elwood and make sure to scarf down some peel and eat shrimp, all for under $10. Also includes great live entertainment and plenty of drinks. I warn you, it does get a little packed. Sunday afternoons are great, a little less of a crowd and usually a pretty good band. Ragazzi’s Restaurant 4945 Daggett Ave. The Hill This is a great place to get Italian cuisine and wine and dine a date. Call ahead, you may have to get reservations. It’s a little expensive, but it’s worth it. On the drink side, don’t miss out on trying a fish bowl. LaFonda Mexican Restaurant 2310 Troy Rd. Edwardsville Be prepared to get your food quick and delicious. There is a huge menu to pick from. The fajitas and chimichangas are great. It also offers a good build-your-own portion of the menu and nothing will hurt your pocket book too bad either. Mazzio’s Italian Eatery 2683 Northern Way Highland Good pizza and has a nice salad bar and buffet. It’s a great place to take the family for nice dinner out. If you don’t want pizza, it also offers pasta dishes and sandwiches. The mini meatball bake and the greek pasta are good choices. The Pump House Bar & Grill 1523 E. Edwardsville Rd. Wood River This is a cool place to go get a bite to eat or check out live entertainment and grab some drinks. It gets a little creative for bar food and a little expensive, but it’s good. The beef brisket sandwich and the pulled pork are both good. They also have some good craft beers on hand like stuff from 4 Hands Brewery in St. Louis. S&S Sandwich Shop 2505 State St. Alton If you’re in the mood for a good, independently owned deli shop, then this is the spot. Delicious and fresh, they offer a creative line of sandwiches, along with soup selections. Try out the pig on a wing: turkey breast, ham, bacon, lettuce, tomato, red onion, cheddar and swiss cheese and spicy red pepper mayo served on a hoagie bun. Doc’s Smokehouse 1017 Century Dr. Edwardsville Just the aromas that hit you when you walk in the door are enough to make the visit worthwhile. The Doc’s Signature is definitely worth ordering. It’s sliced brisket topped with grilled onions and Provolone cheese served on a toasted and garlic buttered ciabatta bun. Plenty of sides to choose from, too. Check out the corn casserole.

Travel By BILL TUCKER Of The Edge Las Vegas may be the destination for many bachelor parties, but quaint little Hermann, Mo., rates higher for bachelorette parties. At least that’s what we were told by our waitress as a dozen giggly young women walked into the Vintage Restaurant at Stone Hill Winery. Hermann, to be sure, is a romantic destination, nestled in hills of Missouri’s wine country which is dissected by the Missouri River. It’s Grafton with a lot more class. In addition to a dozen or so wineries scattered about, Hermann is also home to a number of antique shops, German-influenced restaurants and art studios. Bed and Breakfasts are the No. 1, if not only, option for an overnight stay. If fact, except for an out-of-place looking Hardee’s, there are no chain restaurants or hotels in Hermann. If Applebee’s and Holiday Inn Express are your idea of a weekend away, look elsewhere. And, truth be told, Hermann isn’t very kid friendly. But since it’s biggest draw is wine, it doesn’t have to be. Our visit found us staying at The Inn at Hermannhof, highly rated by TripAdvisor and well worth the expense. The Inn is a bit scattered with most of the beds located on the side of a hill with the breakfast served along the river banks. Guests check in at the Inn, a threestory brick building on First Street that was built in the mid 1800s. There are eight rooms in the upper floors of the Inn and the dining hall, were breakfast is served, is located on the first floor. Our room was located in one of the six Hillside Cottages, which together contain 19 guest rooms. To reach the cottage, we had to drive up the hill and wind our way around. There is a staircase from the

Inn, but it was March, it was chilly and we didn’t feel like going into goat-mode. The brick cottages are well marked and quite attractive. Just like a house, you enter the main door and walk down a hallway to reach your room,

which might be a staircase above, a staircase below our on the ground floor. Each room is different and guests pay for those differences as accommodations are available at premium, deluxe and classic levels. The rooms are a combination

of quaint antique and modern convenience. Our room featured a canopy bed and claw-foot bathtub. There was also free wi-fi and a walk-in shower with five spraying heads. Guests receive a free bottle of

wine, courtesy of the Hermanhoff Winery, and a plat of meat and cheese. Yes, there’s a refrigerator, just a few feet away from the cedar hope chest. The room, for comparison sake, was on par with any at Walt Disney World. Clean, comfortable, nothing broken, no chipped paint, everything top-of-the line. There are outdoor seating areas scattered among the Hillside Cottages, but again, we went off season, not the outdoor sitting season. Hillside cottages also offer excellent views of the Missouri River and downtown Hermann. Breakfast, as mentioned, is served at the Inn, in a large room filled with Amish tables and chairs and a gigantic stone fireplace. We were treated to coffee cake, a spinach strudel and bacon. The portions were large, fresh and delicious. A first-rate meal after a first-rate night. Hermann has its busy seasons – spring, fall and Christmas – when a number of events are scheduled including the Maifest, Wurstfest and bicycling events on the KATY Trail. There’s even a Wedding Trail day for couples planning weddings at which they can check out possible ceremony and reception locations and meet with florists and photographers. Slightly less than two hours from Edwardsville, Hermann is a quick, easy and enjoyable getaway from the Edwardsville area. A river city with a heavy German influence, plenty of unique shops wine flowing like water, it’s a great couples getaway.

This unique car show gets its name from the shape of the Lake of the Ozarks, which, from the air, looks like a big dragon as it winds 90 miles through the Ozark hills. "Several decades ago, the Lake area was nicknamed 'The Land of the Magic Dragon,'" explained Magic Dragon Chairman John Caran. "We really liked the name, so we took it and ran with it." Since the first event in 1989, Magic Dragon has continued to grow in size and popularity, and that's partly because it's the only car show in the Midwest to give away a brand new muscle car to one lucky winner every year for the last nine years. "It's become such a popular event that we had to cap the number of show cars at one thousand," continued Caran. "We were growing larger than the real estate we have available, so we're now focused on making it better instead of bigger. We've made lots of improvements to the activities and we've made it a

The multi-city trek, which kicks off on May 21st in Vancouver, will include stops at Denver ’s historic Red Rocks Amphitheater on May 28th, Chicago’s prestigious Chicago Theater on June 5th, New York’s Central Park Summerstage o n J u n e 1 7 t h , E l e c t r i c F o re s t Festival in Rothbury, MI on June 2 7 t h , a n d t h e G re e k T h e a t e r in Los Angeles on August 17th. Lindsey’s last US tour sold over 100,000 headline tickets and nearly 200,000 headline tickets worldwide. Stirling will appear at The Fox Theatre in St. Louis on June 24. Tickets are $89.50, $69.50, $49.50, $44.50, $39.50, $29.50, $19.50 and are on sale online at metrotix. com, by calling 314-534-1111, or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office. The tour will continue to support Lindsey’s critically acclaimed sophomore album Shatter Me, which according to Neilson, was the #1 and #2 bestselling Electronic album in 2014. Released on April 29, 2014 via Lindsey’s own label Lindseystomp Records, Shatter Me debuted at #2 on Billboard’s Top 200 Chart, #1 on the iTunes Album Chart, and spent an impressive 21 weeks straight at the #1 spot on the Billboard Classical Album

20

Chart. With nearly a quarter million copies sold in the US to date, Shatter Me marks the highest charting independently distributed album on the Billboard 200 since Garth Brooks’ “Blame It All on My Roots.” Since the release of Shatter Me, Lindsey h a s ma d e a s le w o f natio nal television appearances on shows such as Good Morning America, Today Show and the View and was recently honored with YouTube’s prestigious Music Award, which recognizes the site’s 50 biggest artists and musical acts. Fans can expect to hear Lindsey perform some of her biggest hits to date, including her breakthrough track "Crystallize" and the very personal "Shatter Me" in an all new revamped production from her last US tour, which is currently being shown on Public Television. The TV special, “Lindsey Stirling: Live from London,” will continue t o a i r o n p u b lic TV s tatio ns nationwide for an exclusive two-month window (check local listings). The concert was filmed at London's Forum Theater in 2014 and showcases the incredible music production that fans have come to expect from Lindsey’s live shows, where the infectious energy of dance and electronic music meet modern classical. Lindsey Stirling is one of the biggest artist development breakthrough stories in recent years. A classically trained violinist f ro m G i l b e r t , A r i z . , L i n d s e y has entered a futurist world of electronic big beats and animation, leaping through the music industry with 6.2 million YouTube subscribers, 930 million views on her YouTube channel, Billboard chart-topping hits and sold out

tours worldwide. Lindsey’s self-titled debut album featured twelve original tracks; including the viral smash “Crystallize,” which has racked up over 116 million YouTube views. The album recently earned her a 2014 Billboard Music Award n o m i n a t i o n f o r “ To p D a n c e / E l e c t ro n i c A l b u m , ” h a s s o l d 430,000 copies in the US without the backing of a major label, and has gone platinum in Germany and gold in Poland and Switzerland. The album reached #1 on Billboard’s Dance/Electronic Chart and Classical Album Chart and peaked at #23 on the Billboard Top 200. On April 29th, 2014, Lindsey released her sophomore album Shatter Me which debuted at #2 on Billboard’s Top 200 album chart and has sold 225,000 copies to date in the US alone. The album includes a collaboration with Halestorm lead singer Lzzy Hale on her smash single “Shatter Me,” which has over 27 million views on YouTube. On November 28, 2014, Lindsey released the deluxe album Shatter Me: The Complete Experience Zinepak which includes 13 songs and a full-color 48-page magazine with exclusive interviews and photos, plus word magnets. Lindsey has created a new music world where the romance of Celtic folk music and modern classical meet the infectious energy of dance and electronica. On stage, Stirling moves with the grace of a ballerina but works the crowd into a frenzy, “dropping the beat” like a rave fairy. Stirling is the model of a modern independent recording artist, with a symbiotic relationship with her fans. A motivational speaker in her

spare time, Stirling uses her own story to show teenagers that you’ve got to have confidence in the very thing that makes you unique – then wait for the world to catch up.

Alabama Shakes to appear at The Fox

KPNT 105.7 The Point Welcomes & The Pageant & Steve Litman Present is excited to announce Alabama Shakes with special guest Father John Misty live at the Fabulous Fox Theatre Thursday, May 28 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $75, $45, $35, $30 and $25 and are available online at metrotix.com, by calling 314-5341111, or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office. Sound & Color is the eagerly anticipated follow-up to the Shakes’ 2012 debut Boys & Girls, which earned the group three Grammy nominations, including a nod for Best New Artist. The gold-certified album’s breakthrough paved the way for the Shakes—Howard, guitarist Heath Fogg, bassist Zac Cockrell, drummer Steve Johnson, and touring keyboard players Ben Tanner and Paul Horton—to become one of the most celebrated live acts in the world, as they delivered unforgettable performances everywhere from Saturday Night Live to the main stages of such festivals as Bonnaroo and Glastonbury. The album’s twelve songs reveal a band honed by years on the road, and drawing from a wide range of influences. The bluesy groove of “Shoegaze” or the garage-rock freak-out on “The Greatest” give way to the psychedelic space jam “Gemini.” The gently swaying, chiming title song opens the album

with what Howard calls “more of a visual thing, I think of this whole scene going on,” then explodes into the urgent, tightly-coiled funk of “Don’t Wanna Fight.” Long instrumental intros and passages create hazy atmosphere, and then the intensity of Howard’s vocals snaps everything back into riveting focus. The songs were written during breaks in the grueling touring schedule of a young band, sometimes by the members together and sometimes by Howard working alone at her home studio. She notes that there were several dedicated writing periods during the past year, but that “sometimes I wasn’t dedicating enough time, so I’d binge-write, sit in the basement and work for 18 hours for five days straight.” When the Shakes began recording at Nashville’s Sound Emporium studio, Blake Mills—a young guitar wizard who has previously helmed sessions by Sara Watkins and Sky Ferriera, and played alongside everyone from Norah Jones and the Dixie Chicks to Lana Del Ray and Kid Rock—came on board as a co-producer to help harness all of the different ideas. With Sound & Color, Alabama Shakes prove that the response to Boys & Girls was no fluke. Expanding on the soulful blues-rock base that made their name, they defy predictable expectations and map an exciting, surprising, and innovative new direction. As they prepare to return to the road, what shines through is a sense of pride and self-assuredness—feelings not often associated with the alwaystricky sophomore album. The show is presented by The Pageant & Steve Litman Presents.

Music Tuning in Yes, Toto to appear in St. Charles

World-renowned recording artists, Yes and Toto, today announced they will join forces this summer for a co-headlining North American tour. Among the world’s most influential, ground-breaking, and respected progressive rock bands, Grammy Award winning Yes has sold nearly 40 million albums in a career that has so far spanned more than four decades. YES continues with its tradition of symphonic progressive rock that remains timelessly fresh and innovative. Since its founding in 1968, Yes has created much of rock history’s most important music, including iconic pieces like ‘Roundabout,’ 'Close to the Edge,’ ‘I’ve Seen All Good People,’ “Owner of a Lonely Heart,’ ‘Starship Trooper,’ and countless others. Its albums, including ‘Fragile,’ ‘Close to the Edge,’ ‘Tales from Topographic Oceans,’ and ‘90125,’ have been certified multi-platinum, doubleplatinum, platinum, and more by the RIAA. Yes continues to inspire millions of musicians, fans, and music lovers around the world. “We’re thrilled to be hitting the road with Toto. Yes have always been big fans of Toto’s music, and we think the fans are going to really enjoy seeing both of us together,” says Yes co-founder and bassist, Chris Squire. Few ensembles in the history of recorded music have individually or collectively had a larger imprint on pop culture than the members of Toto. As individuals, the band members can be heard on an astonishing 5000 albums that together amass a sales history of a half a billion albums. Amongst these recordings, NARAS applauded the performances with more than 200 Grammy nominations. The Toronto Star calls it “The bravest new musical in a long time. Led by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey’s dazzling score, it is one of the few Broadway shows that looks and sounds like the world of today.“ “A smart, deeply touching and big-hearted new musical” says The Washington Post. “Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey's score is invested with melodic urgency, bringing you to tears or breathlessness.” And the Chicago Tribune calls it “A thoroughly fascinating, intellectually and musically rich new musical. It is a zesty, savvy and ambitious original.” THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY | April 5 – 17, 2016 THE BRIDGES OF MADISON

COUNTY, one of the most romantic stories ever written, first captured the nation’s attention as a bestselling novel by Robert James Waller and is now an irresistible, two time Tony Award®-winning Broadway musical. This stunning new production features gorgeous, soulful music by Tony Awardwinning composer Jason Robert Brown (“Parade,” “The Last Five Years”) that the Daily News hails as “one of Broadway’s best scores in the last decade.” With a book by Pulitzer Prize winner Marsha Norman (“The Secret Garden,” “The Color Purple”) and direction by Tony winner Bartlett Sher (“South Pacific” “The Light in the Piazza”), THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY is the unforgettable story of two people caught between decision and desire, as a chance encounter becomes a second chance at so much more. THE SOUND OF MUSIC | April 26 – May 8, 2016 The hills are alive with the brand new production of THE SOUND OF MUSIC, directed by Jack O’Brien. The spirited, romantic and beloved musical story of Maria and the Von Trapp Family will once again thrill audiences with its Tony®, Grammy® and Academy Award® - winning Best Score, including “My Favorite Things,” “Do-ReMi,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Edelweiss” and the title song. THE SOUND OF MUSIC features music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II with a book

by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, as suggested by “The Trapp Family Singers” by Maria Augusta Trapp. Series Specials Eight specials for the 2015–2016 Season will be offered to subscribers for priority seating before their public on-sale dates. The ultimate feel-good show, MAMMA MIA!, returns to the Fox November 6–8. For the holidays, the Fox welcomes back IRVING BERLIN’S WHITE CHRISTMAS November 17–22 and CIRQUE DREAMS HOLIDAZE December 4–6. Back by popular demand, WICKED returns December 9, 2015 – January 3, 2016.
