Maine Non-Commercial, Lobster/Crab Practice Course About the Service: Maine Non-Commercial, Lobster/Crab Practice Course The Maine Department of Marine Resources offers a non-commercial lobster and crab practice course. This course is designed to familiarize students with the rules and regulations that apply to the harvesting of lobsters and crabs in Maine. The course is taught by experienced instructors who have been involved with the lobster fishery for many years. The class is offered at least once a month during the spring, summer and fall seasons. It consists of three classroom sessions (approximately six hours per session) and one field session (approximately three hours). The classroom sessions cover basic terminology, fisheries biology, distribution and habitat characteristics, life history information on lobsters and crabs, gear selection and operation. The field session provides an opportunity to put theory into practice by showing students how to select gear based on their needs, set it up properly, measure depth using sonar/depth finders and catch live lobsters or crabs from traps or pots in coastal waters off Maine's midcoast region. Students must register online before attending their first class session by calling 800-332-1635 or visiting www.maine.gov/dmrnd
