Maine Medical Doctor, Emergency Practice Course About the Service: Maine Medical Doctor, Emergency Practice Course Maine Medical Doctor (MD) is a 24 hour licensed EMS program that provides emergency medical care to the citizens of the State of Maine. The MD program is a part-time, volunteer position with Maine Emergency Medical Services (MEMS). The MD is trained and equipped to treat patients in the field until an ambulance arrives. The MD course is a two-weekend class that teaches students how to respond to and manage a wide variety of medical emergencies including heart attacks, strokes, allergic reactions, asthma attacks, fractured bones and other injuries. Students also learn how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) and administer CPR on adults as well as children. The course meets all national standards set forth by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), American Heart Association (AHA) and American Red Cross (ARC). Upon successful completion of this course students will be eligible for certification as a Maine Medical Doctor with Maine Emergency Medical Services.
