Maine is both the northernmost and easternmost portion of New England. It is known for its scenery—its jagged, mostly rocky coastline, its low, rolling mountains, its heavily forested interior and picturesque waterways—as well as for its seafood cuisine, especially clams and lobster. The earliest European settlement in Maine was by the English colony of Massachusetts Bay; this was followed by British colonization that began in 1607 on St. Croix Island at Fort Pentagouet. The area became part of Massachusetts until 1820 when it was admitted to the Union as part of a northern expansion of the original Thirteen Colonies; as part of Colonial America (1607–1775), Maine was part of British North America from 1755 to 1763.
