OBI SCORE Now available OBI SCORE, a novel technique to objectively measure the quality grade of a beef carcass. Developed by Daniel Hammond MS MD, of Mogo Charolais and Scott Jaques MS PhD, of Applied Biosciences, LLC. Carcass grading is based on BTU’s to measure levels of quality grade, (select, choice and degrees of Prime) and includes melting point (TM) temperatures to determine healthier and more beneficial fatty acids.

CHAROLAIS Association
The AICA is the official registry for Charolais and Charbray cattle in the United States. Charolais cattle were first brought to the U.S. in 1936. In 1957, the American Charolais Breeders Association and the International Charolais Breeders Association merged forming the present AICA. Membership in the AICA is obtainable when the applicant has ownership in at least one animal, and has paid the initial membership fee of $125. AICA annual dues are $100.

Reminders were be mailed in November. Active members – $100; junior member – $25. Junior member Charolais Journal subscriptions are an additional $25. Be sure to update all contact information including e-mails and websites. If dues are not renewed for 2024, online passwords will not work.
New ONLINE Lab Results
New online lab results! View your lab results with one click. Under the “herd” tab, click into “My Lab”. Your DNA tested animals will be listed there. Click the “view” button to see details on each animal. You can also download the results in an Excel file by using the “Lab Test Results Export” under the “tools” tab.

Record your 2024 born calves using AICA’s online system. Add the data as the calves are born; continue to update the records as you add weaning and yearling data. Register the calves at any time by adding their name.
Animals Held in the System
If an animal is registered online and held in the system, you can transfer that animal at any time. If an animal was registered online, but wasn’t held in the system, it will not be able to be transferred online. You will need to fill out the back of the certificate that was mailed to you and send it back to the office to be transferred.

DNA Fee Update
Effective January 1, 2024, all 100K DNA kits ordered through the office or submitted online will be billed to the breeder’s account at the time of kit requests. The same will apply to the add on tests for BPA and Horned/Polled. In making this change, we are hoping to increase the efficiency of the process and cut down on the requests for multiple kits ordered on animals. This change should also result in a more accurate expected count of samples arriving at the lab. If any corrections or changes on kit requests need to be made, please contact the AICA Registration Department before sample submission to the lab.

ycotoxins have always been a problem for cattle, but due to modern agronomic practices, feeding practices and feed storage there is greater mycotoxin prevalence today than in the past. Cattlemen now have to deal with this issue more frequently.
Dr. Larry Roth (Vice-President of Nutrition, Agrarian Solutions) does research on mycotoxins and works with nutritionists and veterinarians, beef and dairy producers to protect their livestock from mycotoxins. “Mycotoxins are produced by molds as part of their own survival mechanism—in what we call competitive exclusion. Molds couldn’t care less about their effects on us or our livestock; they just don’t want other things growing in their territory, so they create these poisons. Our animals are simply collateral damage,” he explains. Molds are opportunistic and
readily start growing on plants that can’t fend them off. “Anything that stresses the plant, such as too much water, too little water, too hot or too cold can tip the balance and weaken the plant—making it more susceptible to things like mold. Then if the mold gets stressed by some of those same conditions, it puts out these poisons to keep other opportunistic organisms from growing in its home.” Many modern agronomic practices favor molds. For example, crops today have greater canopy density than what you usually find in nature. “There is much more canopy, and it holds more moisture. It also C HCAHRAORL OA LI SA I JSO JUORUNRANL A L

keeps out sunlight which is the best disinfectant, and hinders air movement, so these molds take off and grow,” says Roth. “It’s also a good farming practice to leave crop residue on the soil surface; we do minimum till and no-till to increase organic matter in the soil. As soon as new green leaves emerge, coming up through that old residue, they become infected with molds, and if the molds get stressed, they create their toxins,” he explains. “If we don’t pack silage as well as it should be, or quickly cover it with oxygen-limiting plastic, weathering and poor fermentation lead to

molds and mycotoxins. “We also utilize more feeds today that might contain mycotoxins. By-products like distillers grains and corn gluten feeds concentrate and raise the level of mycotoxins compared to what was in the base feed.” We also store feeds for later use, which sometimes leads to mold formation due to poor harvest conditions or weather damage during storage. “Unfortunately, it seems like we now have more of these molds and mycotoxin issues than in the past, and our animals today are also more susceptible. They are like fine-tuned machines compared to livestock we had in the past.” We have selected them genetically for desired traits like faster growth, more milk production, etc. and in doing so have lost the genetic diversity they once had, which helped give them a stronger immune system. “The analogy I like to give is the way we’ve also fine-tuned
vehicles for speed. We could take an old ranch pickup to the Indy 500 Speedway and drive along 10 miles an hour. Someone could throw a brick out there and that old truck would roll right over it and keep going. By contrast we could take an Indy 500 car and whiz along at 180 miles an hour and hit that same brick, and we’re wrecking and hitting the wall. Our animals are like fine-tuned machines, and when little things come along, like mycotoxins, they can cause a wreck. It’s normal for the cow to have a calf, or to wean a calf, but added stress like transport, or even vaccination and working those animals can make them more susceptible to effects of these mycotoxins,” says Roth. “Two hundred years ago, a brood cow was eating dry grass and wasn’t fed corn silage or distillers grains. eaten in the past,” he explains. The brood cow in her last trimester might be fed corn silage or small grain silages or a little distillers because her nutrient requirements are greater as the fetus is growing fastest before calving. “Thus we are getting more mycotoxins into that cow, which lowers her immune defenses. Her immune system is her military—to defend against invading agents. If the immune system is hammered by mycotoxins, this is a nutrient drain. The cow only has a certain amount of nutrient resources to allocate. Now some of those nutrients she was hoping to put into that fastgrowing fetus and into colostrum quantity and quality are diverted into defending herself. Her first priority is to survive.” If on top of that nutrient drain she goes through a bad winter, cold/ wet conditions add more stress. If Continued on page 60

i everyone! My name is Marie Downey, and I am your AIJCA Junior Board Area 8 Director. I am from Prattville, Alabama. My four younger sisters and I all show Charolais cattle, specifically heifers, and this year, my younger brother will start showing as well. This year, I am a sophomore at Mississippi State University, where I am studying Chemical Engineering.
What are your hobbies/activities? I love being with people, so anything that involves my friends and family (or cows :) ) is great! In addition to showing and caring for cattle, I also enjoy reading. Since being at college, I have started cooking a lot more, which I love, and I have also started playing tennis, which is a lot of fun! I also really enjoy taking walks and going on hikes. What do you want to accomplish with your time on the AIJCA Board? As a young AIJCA member, I was not very aware of the happenings of AIJCA, so my goal is to help the current members of AIJCA feel more involved by connecting them to information and insights that I did not have. I hope that the new members won’t feel confused or overwhelmed when joining or doing new things with AIJCA. Overall, I want to better this organization so that the board members after me can do the same. I am very excited to be able to work with other board members to make the events for juniors the best they can be! What are your future plans? After graduating MSU, I plan to get a job, likely at a chemical plant or something similar. If it were possible, I would work for a company that has an agriculture connection, but that is not all too common when looking for chemical engineering positions.
What is one thing you would say to someone interested in joining the Charolais breed? Charolais breeders are a different type of people. There are many who have helped me along the way as I got started in the Charolais breed. Specifically, they let me come to their herd and buy the best of their heifer crop in order to help me start my own herd and to allow me to be competitive in the show ring. There aren’t people like that anywhere else, who will make such a sacrifice in order to see someone else succeed. Those in the Charolais breed care about each other and they care about the prosperity of the youth (and anyone starting out in the breed). Who inspired you to become a Junior Board Member? At all the Junior National shows my family went to, I always thought that the Junior Board was so cool. The board members were always talkative and outgoing, something I really admired in them, so I decided that I should run. I was strongly encouraged by my older cousins who were on the board in years past. What is the best piece of advice that you have been given? No matter what you do, do it to the best of your ability. I have found this to be extremely beneficial in so many aspects. Whatever you’re doing, whether you want to be doing it or not, be present, and enjoy it the best you can instead of dwelling on what you could be doing instead. What is one way that we can continue advocating for the agricultural industry? We can advocate for the agriculture and beef industry by simply telling people about what we do. Especially for the younger generation, social media is a great way to tell others about our industry and lifestyle. There are so many misconceptions and lies about agriculture that are circulated, and if we don’t negate them, the negative view many people have of agriculture can become extremely detrimental.

tin whistle. She was an avid reader and passionate about livestock, especially horses. Her two best horses were Fireball and Rio, who she bought with her own money to train this fall. Her faith was central to her character, always being a light to those around her. She kept a notebook of her favorite Bible verses on her nightstand. Very early on, she always said she was going to be a veterinarian like her dad. Halle was very mature for her age; she could visit with anyone from little kids to adults and she had a way to relate to every age group. Halle was so reliable and disciplined that you never had to tell her to do chores. If it needed to be done, she took the initiative to get the work done. Grit was a word her family and friends always used to describe her, pushing and pulling any 4H steer

AICA MEMBERSHIP N E W S Obituary Halle Hope Domek, age 13 of Wibaux, Montana passed away on Wednesday, December 27, 2023 after a tragic horse accident at the ranch. Halle was born on December 7, 2010 in Manhattan, Kansas to her parents, Austin and Jenny (Zinda) Domek while her dad was finishing veterinary school at Kansas State University. At six months old, the family moved back to Wibaux where Halle was raised and educated. She was currently in the seventh grade at Wibaux County Schools. Halle was very active in softball, volleyball, basketball, 4-H, FFA and had just joined the Beach Livestock Judging Team. Halle was extremely talented, both artistically and musically, she could play the violin, piano, trumpet, and the Irish

I participate in livestock judging as well as tool identification. My goal is to be chapter President next year. sure I liked it. However, over time, it has become a part of who I am, and I absolutely love it. I look up to my dad, because of the hard TSI work and time he puts in helping me pursue my dreams. In addition 265.44 to my dad, the Dybdal Family has been very good to me, so I look up to them as well. They spend time with me when we’re in Nebraska, and they even taught me how to ride a horse!
What are your future goals?
Elizabeth – My favorite memory was showing at my first Junior National in Perry, Georgia, where my heifer was Division Reserve Champion. Also, being able to participate in activities and meet lots of nice people at Junior National has been awesome.
Elizabeth – I want to continue showing Charolais cattle, and do well enough academically in high school so I can get accepted to Texas A&M University. There I want to study Animal Science with hopes to become a veterinarian eventually. In the future, I also want to have some land, where I can have a cattle operation of my own. *Interviewed by AIJCA Board

When first-calf heifers calve easy, grow good-looking, heavy calves and breed up quick, it makes a guy happy. 3004’s beautiful Miles Ahead-Resource dam did a great job and this guy fires us up. I am a junior at Benton Community High School, where I am an active member in concert choir, band, FFA, and National Honor Society. I also am in 4-H, 4-H County Council, 4-H Livestock Judging, and 4-H Quiz Bowl. I started showing cattle in 2014. I purchased my first Charolais heifer in 2017. I now own five Charolais cows. I attended my first Charolais Junior National show in Des Moines, Iowa. I am a passionate advocate for the Charolais industry, and one of my favorite livestock shows was the National Western in Denver, Colorado. My goal as Iowa Charolais Queen is to make all of the Iowa junior members feel welcome.

Unfortunately, some of her nutrients are being allocated to fight the mycotoxins.” Mycotoxins can reduce the ability of beef cattle to reach their genetic potential, and steal money from the producer and nutrients from the animal. “We must remember that mycotoxins are absorbed by the cow and can be stored in her fat when she is picking up a little body condition. Once she has the calf and is producing milk, she starts to metabolize some of that body fat.” That’s a normal situation to provide the extra energy to produce milk. “As she metabolizes body fat, however, the mycotoxins stored
there are now free to float through the body. The liver is the body’s biochemical factory as well as a filter; everything must go through the liver, so it is working hard to detoxify these mycotoxins. It is normally busy making glucose and other nutrients the cow needs, but is now damaged, impaired in that capacity, going through all the necessary detoxifying of mycotoxins,” Roth explains. “Let’s say we get the calf on the ground and everything is going along fairly well until weaning time. Maybe we’re planning to background the calf or even just keep it at home for 30 to 60 days to precondition. We might be feeding the calf some forages or byproducts that contain mycotoxins. The calf goes through the stress of weaning and vaccinating. With vaccinations we are trying to take the immune system to school so it can learn how to recognize pathogens, but now we don’t have all the nutrients necessary to do all that.” The body is diverting some of those nutrients to fight mycotoxins, and the immune system might not be
able to mount good response to the vaccinations. “These calves—whether steers we plan to sell, replacement heifers, or high-dollar bull calves—are unable to reach their genetic potential. Maybe we have a fantastic bull calf that we’ve weaned and it did well on all the indexes and we are thinking it will bring a great price at our bull sale in the spring. If that bull calf is having to deal with a lot of mycotoxins, it won’t be able to grow like it should,” says Roth. “We get to the breeding soundness exam (BSE), getting ready for our bull sale. at Agrarian, we’ve taken a different approach. We work with a beneficial bacterium that has been shown to trigger the animal’s natural defense mechanism against mycotoxins so the body can fight better. These animals have been exposed to mycotoxins forever and have developed their own way to kick mycotoxins out of intestinal cells where they would otherwise be absorbed,” says Roth. “These specialized bacteria trigger proteins that clean up intestinal cells. They are like garbage trucks to haul the contaminants away. We simply need to trigger the natural defense and take it to the next level, to keep up with what’s happening—greater prevalence of mycotoxins and cattle that are expected to function at a higher level, and traditional binders that are not very effective,” he says. “So now we are bringing in special probiotics that trigger the natural defense mechanism. The specialized bacteria in DTX (from Agrarian Solutions) are a research-proven and time-tested (over 25 years) method of protecting cattle against mycotoxins,” says Roth. producing milk for the calf at side. It reduces the nutrients available for the bull to successfully pass his BSE, and reduces reproductive success of the heifer,” says Roth. Nutrients are expensive, so these mycotoxins are stealing profits. “I think of them as silent profit robbers. If we can get the cow pregnant in the first breeding cycle, her calf will be that much bigger/heavier if it’s a steer to sell. Her heifer calf will be older and if it’s a replacement heifer more likely to be ready to breed.” If that heifer is younger and a bit behind, she may be unable to do that. A bull calf born later won’t be as big at weaning so maybe his index doesn’t look as good, and he will be 21 days behind when it comes to the bull sale. Traditional mycotoxin binders can also reduce nutrient availability to the animal,” says Roth. “Clay products tie up amino acids that the animal needs for growth, milk production and the immune system. They also tie up vitamins A and E, which are crucial for immune function and reproduction,” he explains. Other products utilize yeast cell walls. “They are like the clays; they are not that good at tying up mycotoxins but are fairly good at reducing nutrient availability. So here

them to grow (without becoming too fat) but if they have to deal with mycotoxins in the feed, they won’t grow as well as we’d hoped. When we try to do a timed AI on these heifers, if they are having to deal with these issues, we won’t have the success we hoped for. Those heifers probably are not as big as they ought to be, and won’t be as fertile, even though we go through all the timed AI steps,” he says. “Then the first 20 days or so after breeding, the ones that did get pregnant (cows or heifers) need a lot of glucose to donate carbons to the rapidly-developing embryo. The glucose in this instance is not so much for energy; the embryo needs glucose as a source of carbon because it is growing so fast. Again, if mycotoxins have changed the way the replacement heifer or the cow has allocated her nutrients, the first thing that suffers is her ability to get pregnant for the next calf. The body’s highest priority is staying alive, not reproduction.” That female must be healthy, with adequate nutrition. “The cow’s priority is producing milk for the calf she just had. She has to take care of that calf at her side before she can get pregnant again,” he says. Mother Nature tries to take care of the factory; the cow must survive and be healthy before she can risk herself by getting pregnant again. “The biggest thing mycotoxins do is reduce the nutrients available for productive purposes—whether it’s the calf inside the pregnant cow, or colostrum for the calf at birth, or

CHAROLAIS GENETICS AROUND THE GLOBE by Linda Eck Driving forces behind the popularity of Charolais genetics around the globe were highlighted recently as executives and breeders representing Charolais associations from Canada, Mexico, Australia and South Africa visited the United States during the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) in Louisville, Ky. After spending two days visiting Charolais operations in the area, sitting in on American-International Charolais Association (AICA) committee meetings and viewing cattle at the NAILE, the travelers took time from their busy schedule to share their thoughts about the importance of the Charolais breed in their respective countries. Speaking as guests of the Charolais USA Podcast, all were in agreement that
Charolais cross cattle have become popular in their countries because they add pounds at sale day. Use of EPDs and the Terminal Sire Index (TSI) are also gaining momentum as is the opportunity for joint evaluations and collaboration between the breed organizations.
Crossbreeding and Performance
“We’re very much about using Charolais for crossbreeding,” said Colin Rex, general manager of the Charolais Society of Australia which touts its ‘Cross into Profit’ motto. “We’re looking for those bulls with muscle and growth to go to those Bos Indicus cattle.” “Our commercial producers, in the north especially, the top end, are very happy to pay big dollars for a bull. It’s not unusual for a $50,000 to $60,000 bull to go commercial. Typically, they CHAROLAIS JOURNAL
have a select herd of cows and they’ll breed some of their own bulls.” While Australian herds have a lot of American and Canadian bulls, “We still have quite a heavy French influence,” noted Rex. “I guess our breeders have done a great job in taking all those genetics from around the world and developing our Australian type, because we do have a unique environment in many regards.” “We’re probably not as feedlot dominated” as in the United States, said Rex. “We have a lot more grass finishing, more so in the south. The further north you go, the more we go into feedlots. Then you go out into the pastoral stations and some of those cattle will be finished later, between two and three years of age, but off grass, when they have a good season.” Charolais are also used primarily for

between the CCA and the AICA for joint evaluations, specifically with EPDs. “As we market cattle back and forth, the need to be able to incorporate EPDs from each country became more and more important as the genetics moved back and forth across our border,” explained Scott. “So, it (the idea of joint evaluations) was gaining steam and both associations sat down and said, this is very attainable, let’s do it.” “The ties between the two countries were there…so there was very little swing,” he added. “It was very well accepted.” As collaborations and trade between breeders in the United States continues, Scott too, said environmental concerns arise. He reflected on cattle coming from the southern U.S. into Canada, with their climate, may not have the hair that is needed, or vice versa, with cattle from Canada going to the south. Scott also noted Canadians are becoming more focused on grass. “One thing that we’ve been concentrating on is more yield, and that’s off grass. More pounds per acre,” said Scott. “We need to raise more beef and we have to do it on less acres. And that’s where the Charolais advantage, in my opinion, is really there.” Overall, the podcast series was summed up appropriately for everyone with a comment from Canada’s Craig Scott, when speaking of similarities and collaboration between the U.S. and Canada: “As far as the type of cattle, we’re very similar. CANCELLATION POLICY Charges dependent upon stage of production will be invoiced to advertisers who cancel previously submitted advertising. DISCOUNTS A 5% discount for all advertising will be given if prepaid for one year. No agency commissions allowed on breeder rates. CLOSING DATES All advertising copy (including photos) must be in the Charolais Journal office by the 25th of the second month preceding publication, i.e. Jan. 25 for the March issue or the first working day thereafter. A $100 late fee will be applied to all late advertisements. Proof deadline: 20th of the second month preceding publication, i.e. Jan. 20 for March issue.
