Narara-Wyoming Cricket Club JUNIORS - Season 2016 - 2017

Junior Chairman’s Report Rob Blandford

What a fantastic season of cricket 2016-17 turned out to be, full of fun, learning and great sport. Narara-Wyoming Junior Cricket Club – your club registered over 160 players this season, with 12 playing groups (teams) across 6 age divisions / player formats including Milo in2Cricket and T20Blast. These numbers represented another great year for NWJCC with a recognition that many players returned and a continuation of growth and prosperity for many years to come. The other great news for 2016-17 was that with last year’s age group shifts meant many returning players were able to remain in the same age format and continue playing with their friends. This helps ensure cricket is enjoyed that little more and adds to the consistency that can be achieved. A HUGE “Congratulations and Well Done” to all our players. Your efforts on the field and your commitment to the game gave everyone who saw you play tremendous enjoyment. There is no doubt that every player and every team created many great memories as well as their own fantastic stories to tell of first time achievements and amazing feats. To you, our players THANK YOU, and we can’t wait to see you wearing the ‘baggy green’ one day for Australia. The club was exceptionally successful this year, with nearly every competition team making finals and every team showing improvement and great play week to week. Special congratulations to our U11A Whites who were premiers and champions, to the U16’s who were champions, to the U14A’s and U14D’s for being runners up, and the U12A’s and U14C’s for making the semi-finals. These are all wonderful achievements and everyone involved should be extremely proud. To the sides that may have had it tougher than others, you will know that you are better for the experience playing at a higher level against strong competition and unyielding opponents. Like last year, many of our NWJCC juniors played for our senior club (many making their debut in 2016-17). Special thanks and congratulations to Harry Moriarty, Thomas Owen, Mitchell Stapleford, Tyler Moriarty, Zane Montgomery, Jayden Fender, Luke Parker, Ethan Kennedy, Ronan Clements-Lee, and David Luders. It was great to see these future NWCC senior lions in action, and there is no doubt that they will be awesome players in the future. NWJCC is fortunate and very thankful to have a group of exceptionally gifted and committed coaches and managers. Thank you to each of these special people who dedicated themselves, their expertise, and their

6

Narara-Wyoming Cricket Club JUNIORS - Season 2016 - 2017 time to help our children reach their potential, and to share the joys of cricket. Thank you too to for those who helped with scoring or umpiring or at coaching sessions, we know the players appreciate it, and it makes our Saturday mornings that little more pleasurable. To the mums and dads, siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles and others who came and cheered, helped with the teams, got players to games and training on time and were just there to share in the joys and soften the hardships, THANK YOU. You being there means so much and is of a great value. In the background, NWJCC is really lucky to have a hard working and extremely committed committee who work together with players, coaches, parents and the association to ensure our club is strong and well organised. Because of these amazing volunteers, the things that need to happen, happen! There are so many examples of this including registration of teams, training organisation, gear and equipment for teams, the T20 Canteen, the Grange Raffles, upgrades to grounds, our Cancer Council initiative and the annual Club Christmas Party which is always a real hit with the kids and really exemplifies our family approach with this great club. It is because of these people that we can continue to make this club one of the best (if not the best) on the coast. And for those of you who can spare a little time, we would love to have you join us and help keep the improvements coming. Then there are our sponsors, who through their wonderful continued community-minded support of NWJCC, allow our club to prosper and be strong. Special mention to The Grange Wyoming who, through their Friday raffles and venue support, help to provide us with additional funds, and a home for our committee work. Other sponsors include Eagle Self Storage, Bendigo Bank, Wyoming Fire Station, The Party Bus, and all the others who have supported the club in very tangible ways. During the year, we were reminded of the importance of playing and supporting the game of cricket with good spirit and respect. We should never forget that we are at the games for the sake of our children and for sport first. Sure, it’s competitive and we like to see our children succeed in a fair and spirited environment, and that’s when we must remember that our actions will either support that principle, or contradict it. Make no mistake, our children see and hear more than we would sometimes like to admit, so let’s do our best to uphold the right traditions at all times. As a club, we pride ourselves on being more like a family. We take care of each other, support one another, enjoy sharing in the achievements, and are there for each other when the chips are down. Narara- Wyoming Cricket club is a great club with over 100 years of tradition, and it is our players, parents, coaches, committee, sponsors, and supporters that keep these traditions and feelings alive. It has been an honour to have shared with you the 2016-17 cricket season, and we look forward to you returning in 2017-18 for even more. Go Lions!

Coaches Standing at Rear (L to R): Markus Moelzer, Andy Gaiser, Pete Ness, Ed Haverkamp, Brad Eldridge. (not present – Jake Wanner) We had 30 children on the books, most of whom were not early and present on ‘photo day’.

Milo ‘in2CRICKET’ Peter Ness

Awards As you might expect, to pick only one name from amongst 30 players as being worthy of public recognition is a difficult task. It was a pleasure for us to coach all the children who turned up on any given week, though admittedly, some showed more aptitude and application than others. The four players regarded by our coaching staff as most deserving of mention are:    

Ansh Bhatt Anuj Bhatt Hayden Gaiser Matilda Sinnott

Unfortunately, there can be only one winner. The player selected for the ‘Most Promising in2CRICKET Cricketer’ award is Hayden Gaiser. A short report from me this season, as I know that there are plenty of pages of text taken up by other coaches, and less text might mean a few more photos – they do say a picture is worth a thousand words…

8

Narara-Wyoming Cricket Club JUNIORS - Season 2016 - 2017 The first thing I want to say is ‘THANKYOU’. Thankyou to the five coaches (yes – that’s right, FIVE coaches) who did so much work this season, in order to provide some really good training and coaching to our children, but also in making my job easier when I needed a hand. I hope all parents (and the kids as they get older) take 5 seconds out to provide a pat on the back and say ‘thanks’ to Brad Eldridge, Ed Haverkamp, Andy Gaiser, Markus Moelzer, and Jake Wanner, for their efforts this past season. It is easy to say “yes – I’ll help” at the beginning of the season, but another thing to routinely turn up week after week, despite inclement weather, tiredness, and all the other distractions of daily life, to provide good coaching with good humour – well done to all of you. A thankyou goes also to the members on the Junior Committee. They all deserve thanks for their good efforts in keeping this Not-For-Profit community sports club running, but I’d especially like to mention Hamish Millen, Stuart Owen, and Chris Rowan for their good natured, unflappable demeanour at various times during this past season, and over previous seasons. These three fellows are all quiet achievers who perhaps don’t get the recognition or accolades they deserve. Finally – a quick thankyou to the adults who put their children into our care this past season. Thanks for giving your children the opportunity to learn a little about cricket, and thanks to all those who assisted in so many ways as we learned new skills, went through practice drills, or just went through some fun warmup activities. in2CRICKET is fun – but it’s much more fun for the coaching staff when a few mums, dads, grandparents, etc, etc get involved too. I hope you and your children enjoyed this last season with us, and come back for more cricket with Narara-Wyoming Juniors next season. My aim next season is to have at least 12 girls, and 20 boys in the Milo in2CRICKET squad – I hope you can help me achieve this goal, by putting the word out about our successful program, especially that girls are being genuinely encouraged to participate in our great game here at Narara-Wyoming Cricket Club. Pete Ness (in2CRICKET Co-ordinator)

Narara-Wyoming junior cricketers take part in the Anthem Ceremony at the beginning of the 3rd Test against Pakistan, at the Sydney Cricket Ground, on the 3rd January, 2017

in2CRICKET Big Day Out !! Ed Haverkamp

This year saw our Milo in2CRICKET squad from Narara-Wyoming lucky enough to be invited to attend the 1st Day of the Third Test between Australia and Pakistan. They were to participate in the ‘on ground entertainment’ activities during the morning tea and luncheon breaks, by showing the crowd some of their amazing cricket skills, and to showcase the future of junior cricket here on the coast, and in NSW generally. So the big day arrived and some very excited kids (and quite possibly some even more excited parents) arrived at Alan Davidson Park early in the morning, to be met by the totally awesome Sam Hawkins and the 'Party Bus'. We had a great trip down to Sydney, and Sam (of course) got a prime parking spot for our bus for the day, so that we did not have a long walk to our rendezvous with the Cricket NSW staff, quite near SCG headquarters. And as we waited, a small crowd gathered around us - these were the rest of the chosen Milo in2CRICKET and T20 Blast teams from other clubs arriving from all over NSW. It was soon confirmed that our kids had been chosen to be part of the national anthem ceremony as well, which was a huge honour! Along with Pete, (our NWCC in2CRICKET coordinator), the kids were then whisked away into the hallowed halls of the SCG, to get ready for their big event, leaving the rest of us to make our way in to the grand old ground. Sadly we were on the opposite side of the field to where the ceremony was being held, but we were still all very proud to see our kids walk out, shake hands with both the Australian and the Pakistani teams, and then stand in front of the players for the national anthems.

10

Narara-Wyoming Cricket Club JUNIORS - Season 2016 - 2017 At this point, a few of us got some very excited texts from home as the cameras had picked up vision of our kids, which was then beamed into living rooms nationwide. With the formalities out of the way, the kids (‌and amazingly, also Pete - who had resisted the urge to hang around near the members stand !!) then found their way back to our group, all now proudly carrying a commemorative medal of the occasion. We sat down and watched some amazing cricket in the first session, including Warner's lightning quick 100, and then it was time for Pete and the kids to show off once again in front of the crowd. They ran through some of our Saturday morning training drills beautifully! More great cricket-watching in the afternoon, and of course, the obligatory Christmas cake, hot chips, cold drinks, sandwiches, ice creams, etc, etc to maintain our strength in the difficult conditions (!). And the kids had a ball - racing around, harassing the drinks cart drivers, merchandise vendors, camera men, and anyone else that would pay them attention, and all generally having fun. As play drew to a close some very tired young people (and some of us not so young) made our way back to the Party Bus where there was soon more than a few heads resting on parent’s laps. We had an absolutely amazing day and our sincerest thanks have to go to Sam Hawkins for not only being our fantastic bus driver, but also for that fact that the money we had chipped in to pay for the diesel and running costs of the trip, he then donated to the club - a true legend! Also - a huge thankyou to Pete Ness who always puts our little club #1, and because of him and the organisation he did, the kids (and us!) got to be part of something truly special, so thanks Pete!!! Awards Most Promising T20 Blast Cricketer (Green Team) – Bryce O’Sullivan Most Promising T20 Blast Cricketer (Black Team) – Keira White

It was an exciting and fun season of T20 cricket for the young men and women of the Narara-Wyoming T20 Blast LIONS. As part of the T20 Blast group excellently coached by Adam Walsh and Rob Blandford and helpers, the mighty Lions enjoyed a series of 13 matches where they had an enormous amount of fun whilst learning heaps about cricket, achieving some personal best feats, and at the same time experiencing the joys and torments of sport whilst making new friends for life. The T20Blast format is a revised format of the game played on grass, with a softer ball, by 8 players per team and with all the trappings of the T20 format including music and a fast pace. Brisbane Water Cricket Club joined our centre, and games were set up in a non-comp round robin type format so that every player stays

12

Narara-Wyoming Cricket Club JUNIORS - Season 2016 - 2017 involved (batting, bowling and fielding) every week. It’s a great way for younger players to build their skills and have a great lot of fun playing cricket. For us at NWJCC, we had a group of 17 young men and woman who were a real mix of ages and experience and it was great to see them playing together and supporting one another each week in the pursuit of improved performances and enjoying both the game and their friendship. Of course, there were standout performances in all facets of the game and it was a pleasure as the team’s coordinator to share in these experiences, see their growth at training and to see the excellence and improvement in their games week after week. It was especially pleasing to see new players to the game of cricket go from their humble start, to become shining lights by the end of the season. For the others in the team that either returned from playing T20 last season, and those who stepped up from Milo Into cricket, the benefits of previously playing in those formats, and the skills that were already built, really shone through. Whilst each player showed promise with all parts of the game, most had an area that they favoured most. Some were natural batters, some loved to bowl, and others liked the excitement of fielding, everyone loved being with their friends. And with so many great shots played, catches snaffled, balls bowled that took wickets, and amazing fielding performances during the season by each and every player in the T20 Blast, our supporters, mums, dads, coaches and oppositions were treated to a feast of great cricket. To everyone who supported the teams, helped get players to games and training on time, set up grounds, helped with T20 BBQ and Canteen, and had the joy of watching these great young men and women this year in T20 Blast, THANK YOU. It’s been a great pleasure and honour to have shared this year with the young players of the mighty Lions, and I hope to see you all back next year. Go Lions!

It has been a real pleasure spending the season guiding this group of boys through their first foray into match cricket. They really took on board what they were shown throughout the year and each individually evolved as the season progressed. All of the boys contributed in their own way - whether cutting off runs and taking screamers in the field, keeping the runs ticking over with the bat in hand, or taking wickets with the ball.

14

Narara-Wyoming Cricket Club JUNIORS - Season 2016 - 2017 As a group, they really came together as a team and this showed in their results, with the boys knocking out quite a few hard fought wins throughout the season, which was well deserved for all their efforts. I personally enjoyed watching these boys that started the season just ‘standing there’ when they hit the ball, or if it went past the keeper, unsure if there was a run in it, grow to make decisive calls, and running freely between the wickets. This improvement was often the difference in their positive results at the back end of the season. I would like to thank all parents that helped throughout the season whether out on the pitch or with the scoring. It was greatly appreciated. Hopefully I have done enough to instil an enjoyment for the game and we will see the boys back next season and build on their already blossoming skills.

The Kimbas came together essentially as a group of AJ’s mates from soccer and school, alongside a couple of new faces. Despite having a few T20 Blast veterans from last season, the side was relatively inexperienced, with Jack being the only player to have faced a hard ball in a match previously. The signs were good from this team early on, with great enthusiasm and comradery being shown from the first practice sessions. This is all

16

Narara-Wyoming Cricket Club JUNIORS - Season 2016 - 2017 well and good, but a real cricket match (and season) can be quite a confronting and confusing experience for young athletes. However, the Kimbas proved they were up to the challenge and showed they will be a force to be reckoned with in the future. Everyone displayed improved skill levels and understanding of tactics, and by the sound of the chatter on the field and sidelines, I’m pretty sure they had a lot of fun too. Louis Bull worked very hard on both his batting and bowling technique throughout the year and developed some good pace towards the end of the season. Highlights were hitting a couple of fours against Kincumber and breaking the metal stumps against Southern Spirit in the Final Round. Alexander Jack channelled his inner Mitchell Stark and bowled consistent in-swingers at searing pace to be our leading wicket taker. He was part of many match swinging partnerships with the bat, developed excellent placement, and running between wickets. Also a very handy keeper! NWCC 1st Grade Opening Bowler 2026! Jack Justice developed in all areas of his game this year, beginning with his bowling, where his consistent line and length saw him take wickets on a regular basis. He became more aggressive with the bat and managed to build a few solid partnerships by season’s end. In the field, he became more talkative, backed up regularly, and gave us one of our season’s highlights, catching a screamer at mid-wicket! Samuel Tracey bowled with an unorthodox, Max Walker style action, which allowed him to impart insane in-swing with the ball. With his accuracy improving regularly, he became a real threat to opponent batsmen. He was a valued batting partner who was involved in many important partnerships with his aggressive running and intelligent shot placement. Sam was also responsible for providing the team with its mascot, ‘Ewan’ the Cavalier King Charles Lion who supervised all warm ups and throw-downs. Isabel McArdle was our number 1 motivator in the field, always reminding the squad of our W.E.B. mantra: Walk in with the bowler, Encourage, and Back-Up. She was always looking to make the big play from fine-leg or backward square and kept opposing batters on their toes. Izzy worked really hard to improve her batting and bowling but she was outstanding behind the stumps and was probably the best keeper in the competition! Naman Raheja joined the team after a couple of rounds and immediately impressed with his enthusiasm and willingness to learn. Early on, he bowled with an interesting action, but tried his hardest every week to improve his mechanics, and was rewarded with some vital wickets. He was always full of beans in the field and a positive batting partner for all his new mates. Jessica Dowling impressed many opposition teams with her consistent line and length, earning her the nickname, ‘The Terminator’, after destroying the stumps on many occasions. She was a rocket between the wickets and developed a wonderful driving technique, allowing her to powerfully find gaps anywhere from mid-off to gully. Thomas McArdle was our enigma wrapped in a riddle! Quiet one second, belting out team chants the next, providing lots of on-field comic relief. He built a few steady partnerships and displayed uncompromising toughness in the field and with the bat. At last count, the Kookaburra had made heavy contact with his foot, forearm, knee, shin and mouth! Tom was proud to spill blood for his fellow Lions! Aston Wilkinson was our ultimate teammate. Always working hard at training and giving the team whatever they needed on the field. A real partnership batsman, his innings were based on solid communication, aggressive running, and valuing his wicket. Aston is a conscientious fielder who also showed great improvement in his bowling by season’s end. Our own Mr. Cricket – Mike Hussey!

17

Narara-Wyoming Cricket Club JUNIORS - Season 2016 - 2017

Lian Burke is a born competitor who was one of the competitions stand out performers in all aspects of the game. His pace, movement, line and length saw him take many scalps with the ball, and he was responsible for several direct hit run-outs. He was our top batsmen of the year, starting the season as a David Warner, attack destroyer, and finishing the year as a super-sensible, partnership builder, who batted to the conditions, running hard and finding gaps. He should win the Senior Club’s Olsen Trophy in about 10 years.

Overall, we had a really fun year, developing a strong team bond and love of the game. We played hard but displayed outstanding sportsmanship. We received brilliant support from parents, grandparents, siblings (are dogs siblings too?), especially Ben Wilkinson as an expert assistant coach, Virginia Justice and Rachel Dowling for scoring, and Paul Feltham from the Cubs for co-coaching on Wednesdays. This team gained many admirers from other clubs for the way they carried themselves this season, and it was an absolute pleasure to coach them. I look forward to seeing them develop in the future and continue the proud tradition of the Lions! Andrew Bull (Coach)

This was our first year of competition cricket and the goal was to improve our young cub’s skills whilst getting used to playing on a full-sized pitch and competition rules. The boys and girls should be extremely proud of their efforts during the season. They all learnt and developed so much during the year and their improvement is a reflection of how well they trained. I wish I’d taken a video of each of them at the start of the season and compared it to how they finished the season. The difference was chalk and cheese. Well done guys!!

Narara-Wyoming Cricket Club JUNIORS - Season 2016 - 2017

Whilst we didn’t make the semis this year, I couldn’t help but feel the weather (The Entrance White) and a couple of games that could have gone our way but sadly, didn’t, just left us out of the running. We can’t control the weather but with experience and focus the guys will learn to close out those tight matches. Whilst every season has it’s standout moments; Angus Jack 40 no v Northern Power, Nick Gately 42 no v The Entrance White, Ella Rosello 6 for 24 v Northern Power, Jack Sinnott smashing our brand new stump in 2 the first time it was hit, (no Jack, I don’t think the stump was faulty), and of course Lachie Tuckfield taking the catch of the year against Warnervale. Sadly there’s always a moment of heartbreak – one that comes to mind is Jaydan Thomson run out on 38 v Kincumber Red. (It was a great knock Jaydan). A huge thank you to Dale Sinnott for umpiring most weekends and to Poala, (the coast’s most enthusiastic scorer), for taking on the scoring and entering the data into “MyCricket” each and every week – very much appreciated. Then of course, there’s Adam Montgomery – what can I say? The man’s a legend!! There you go Adam it’s officially in ink! His dedication to training and helping the kids develop, organising fielding drills, setting up the ground and umpiring is second to none. Adam, from the bottom of my heart I thank you for everything you have done throughout the season – truly remarkable. So that brings us to the end of the season, I wish all you young players all the best for your future, keep training hard and the rewards will come. I look forward to seeing you and your development as people and players around the grounds in years to come. And above all – have fun!!

Under 11As (White) - Minor and Major Premiers 2016-17 What a year for the mighty 11A Whites! Going the entire season with only 1 loss is a fantastic effort from the entire team, with every single player contributing throughout the season without relying on the same 2 or 3 players ,every player played their part

21

Narara-Wyoming Cricket Club JUNIORS - Season 2016 - 2017 which was due to the hard work and commitment shown at training and carrying it forward to game time. The proof is in the stats with only 2 players reaching the retirement score the entire season - Riley Post (40 no vs Terrigal Rd 5, two-day game) and Mitch Stanbury (20no vs Wyong - Rd 6, one-day game). Bowling was shared as well with Jarrah Fender Waters (3-0 vs the Entrance Blue, Rd 2) and Jesse Walker (3-3 vs The Entrance White, Rd 7) the only players to take three or more wickets in an innings. The fielding was by far the best in the comp with every player getting behind the ball and attacking when needed with several direct hit run-outs during the season. Semi Final vs Terrigal

As we finished 1st, we played 4th placed Terrigal. After losing the toss we were asked to have a bat first, and after a few overs it seemed like the right call! After being 1/2,2/9,3/10 we were in big trouble. Blake Hodge batted stubbornly for 12 overs before being dismissed with the score at 3-18. This brought Emily Cross to the crease with Mitch and together they started the fightback. Mitch lost his wicket with the score on 39 (partnership 21). Bailey joined Em at the crease at 5-39, still in massive trouble and what we needed was these two to bat out the day, which they did - ending our first 25 overs at 5/48. As it turned out, this was 1 more than Terrigal would have after their allotted 25 overs (5/47). Day 2 game plan was simple enough; bat the remaining 25 overs without losing too many wickets. ...what happened next was the partnership of the season!! Em and Bailey put on a match-winning partnership of 67 runs. With the only wicket lost being that of Em’s, and with only 2 overs to go for 20 runs. This meant that Em had batted for a total of 35 overs, which in a semi is a fantastic effort! Bailey batted easily the best he had all season to top score with 21 no and also batting for over 30 overs showing great patience and putting a high value on his wicket. With a score of 108 I was very confident the kids would defend it, and although we didn't take early wickets they weren't scoring any runs which put them further behind. Em Cross got the break through (giving her 2/11 plus 20 runs for the game) then it was pretty much a steady flow of wickets as Terrigal tried to up the run rate without success. All the bowlers bowled extremely well without giving away too many sundries and the fielding was brilliant, with some fantastic catches being taken, including the catch of the year to Mitch diving forward to dismiss their opener! 3 run outs at the end was a fine example of our ground fielding and throwing. Terrigal ended up 9/91 off their allotted overs, which meant a victory to us by 17 runs! Another great team effort with everybody either contributing with bat or ball and some fine catching and great run outs as well. Great captaincy from Riley Post who led the team extremely well with his talk behind the stumps, bowling changes and field placement spot on. With the grand final being washed out we were declared champions and rightly so. Congratulations girls and boys on a fantastic season with a premiership cap a just reward for your efforts thru out the season. Glenn and I would like to thank Alison Stanbury for scoring most games this year. Also like to thank Scott Howison and Mick Post (posty) for also helping with scoring and umpiring when required, was much appreciated and allowed Glenn and I to concentrate more on coaching the kids, which was of great benefit to everyone. Also like to thank all the parents, one of the grandparents and extended families who turned up to every game and supported and encouraged the kids all year, easily the best supported team in the comp. I’d like to personally thank Glenn for everything he has done this year, from entering the scores on the ‘mycricket’ database to umpiring every game he was at. Much appreciated mate. Lastly, I want to congratulate the u16's for their premiership and to the other teams who made the semis this year, great effort to have so many teams competing in semis by a great club.

Narara-Wyoming Cricket Club JUNIORS - Season 2016 - 2017 Team Review Riley Post (captain) Great leader - Riley had a good year behind the stumps taking 4 catches and 4 stumpings. Sound year with the bat with a top score of 40. Emily Cross (vice-captain) Great year for Em, with 120 runs for the year and taking out the batting award. With a top score of 20 Em was very consistent all year. Next goal is to convert those 20's into big scores. Bailey Howison Started the year strong then faded in the middle part, only to finish the season stronger than ever, top scoring with 21no in the semi. Once he discovered breakfast, he was unstoppable! Logan O'Brien First year of cricket on a full pitch. Naturally gifted L/H bat who is also a more than handy bowler with figures of 1/6 off 6 including 3 maidens in a row in the semi proof of that. Emily Davies Started off slowly this year but peaked at the right time with her handy medium pacers often tying up the opposition. Unfortunately got injured in the semi stopping an absolute bullet of a ball. Brock Downs Joined us as a fill-in Rd 2, ended up playing the whole season, and taking out the bowling with 13 wickets, best 2/0 avg 5.38. Handy lower order bat who loves hitting the ball hard. Mitchell Stanbury Great all-rounder taking 10 wickets, 107 runs, 6 catches and 2 run outs for the season. Catches win matches and his classic catch in the semi certainly did that, brilliant! Jesse Walker Another first timer on a full pitch, one half of our spin twins - bowling superb leg spin, often bamboozling the opposition. Handy bat and an absolute demon in the field. Jarrah Fender Waters Other half of our spin twins bowling more than handy off spin with 12 wickets this year - avg 4.50, and best 3/0. Hard batsman to dismiss valuing his wicket. Jaiden Jenson First year of cricket and improved in all aspects of the game during the year. Great pair of hands and caught anything that came his way, taking a brilliant catch in the semi over his head a perfect example. Blake Hodge Another to have his first season of cricket. Came back after Christmas a new, more confident player. Opened the batting in semi and stayed out there for 12 overs which was certainly needed. James Cross Disrupted season due to injury but came back after Christmas and proved that once he concentrated and worked hard on his game, could achieve anything. Bowled well in the semi and also a direct hit run out. Mick Cross and Glenn Fender (Coaches)

Awards Batting: Bowling: Fielding: Coach’s:

Jack Kidd Liam Buckley Ethan Mayles Max Dowling

Levi Bailey (Captain) – Levi captained the side for the second year running in 2017 and made huge progress in his tactical awareness and decision-making. His bowling continued to progress and it was always exciting when he came on to bowl. Levi also managed to score the first 50 of the season. Batting: 95 runs @ 19 HS 53* Bowling: 10w @ 8.9. Best 2/2. Jack Kidd (Vice-Captain) – Another strong year for Jack with the bat as he continued to lead the way. He also showed excellent leadership in guiding others during partnerships and proved a very capable assistant to Levi in guiding the side in the field. Batting: 177 runs @ 25.29 HS 41 Bowling 5w @ 20.6. Best 2/5.

24

Narara-Wyoming Cricket Club JUNIORS - Season 2016 - 2017 Liam Buckley – Liam demonstrated a high level of natural ability in every aspect of cricket. He is confident and fearless and has enormous potential moving forward. His consistent swing bowling is a weapon and his batting, when he can remain patient, is something to see. Batting: 123 runs @ 20.5. HS 50* Bowling: 11w @ 7.09. Best 4/4. Max Dowling – Max was easily the most improved player this season. He finished as a consistent fast seam bowler who can bowl a difficult ball to face. Whilst he may have only picked up the one wicket, it was arguably the ball of the season. His batting continues to improve and he managed his highest score in the Semi Final. Batting: 37 runs @ 6.17. HS 13 Bowling: 1w @110 Best 1/12. Harry Faber – Harry is a natural sportsman who loves the contest. He possesses a sound batting technique and bowls both off spin and medium pace competently. He is a keen fielder who took one of the best catches of the season. He has loads of potential and I hope he has many more seasons with the Lions. Batting: 49 runs @ 8.17. HS 22*. Bowling: 7w @ 13.71 Best 2/2. Andrew Hall – Andrew is a dashing, hard-hitting batsman who immediately intimidates opposition sides with his power. He has a sound technique and, with time, will improve his decision making about which balls to attack. His bowling lacks consistency however when he hits the spot, reminds me of Ryan Harris. Potential plus! Batting: 74 runs @ 12.33. HS 21*. Bowling: 3w @ 31.67. Best 1/6. Jake Kennedy – Jake clearly loves playing cricket and the mateship that comes with it. He may not be the biggest hitter or fastest bowler due to his small stature, but he always tries his best. His technique in every aspect of cricket is generally good, so given time to grow, he will develop into a handy cricketer. Batting: 10 runs @ 2.5. HS 9. Bowling: 2w @ 42 Best 1/0. Ethan Mayles – Ethan is another natural sportsman who oozes potential. His batting technique is excellent and his scores will improve with experience and improved decision-making. He bowls fast swing and when he hits a length it’s tough to keep out. Ethan’s fielding is where he really stands out. He is fearless and simply does not drop catches, but it’s his powerful arm that raises eyebrows. He has the ability to throw the stumps down from the boundary and would no doubt be on the list of local baseball scouts. Batting: 68 runs @ 11.33. HS 25. Bowling: 5w @ 23. Best 2/9. Matt McKay – Matt was new to the team this year and always aimed to please. He took big steps in improving his batting technique and was another who achieved a seasons best in the Semi Final. His bowling technique is a work in progress but his ability to bowl consistent line and length points to a good future with the leather in hand. Batting: 7 runs @ 1.75. HS 4*. Bowling: 7w @ 13.71 Best 3/13. Coby Panui – Coby possesses a sound batting technique who demonstrated an ability to bat long periods when needed. His strengths will continue to improve with experience. He bowls left arm medium pace and has a lovely high arm action. Both his batting and bowling improved significantly throughout the season. As a fielder, he is as tough as they come. He does not hesitate to put his body on the line in the field and won’t flinch if the ball thuds into him. Batting: 46 runs @ 9.2. HS 15*. Bowling: 7w @ 16.43. Best 2/10. Nick Rowan – Nick is an astute cricketer who continues to improve each season. He has the ability to play long innings, which will only increase as his batting technique improves. His bowling consistency improved steadily this year and it was his spell against Brisbane Water that clinched us the win and ultimately a spot in the Semis. That on top of his three catches that day – when the ball was a piece of soap - and which took his season tally to 9. He also showed excellent leadership in the field and as always was a pleasure to coach. Batting: 49 runs @ 8.17 HS 17 Bowling: 7w @ 15.29 Best 2/4.

TEAM REVIEW: It was a privilege to be a part of this team in 2017 and to see all the kids develop and grow so much as cricketers. We started the season as a mixed bunch. Our batting generally lacked discipline and our bowling lacked consistency. We were also quiet in the field and lacked direction, looking to the coach for guidance, who this year had decided it was time to place the majority of the decisions in the captain’s hands. By the time our season ended, with the narrowest of losses against the League Champions in the Semi Final, we saw a mature batting outfit backed up by smart bowlers and a tenacious and determined fielding force. Levi was making thoughtful strategic decisions and was ably supported by jack as well as a number of other astute cricketing brains. To see this side operate in the field and apply the screws on opponents gave plenty of joy to Chris (Manager) and myself. After securing a Semi Final berth thanks to a fighting victory over Brisbane Water, we faced Northern Power in the knockout game. Liam (50*) & Jack (41) batted magnificently together and were ably assisted by Levi (15), Max (13) and Coby (12) who contributed to what was a very decent score 8/158 and easily our best batting performance of the season. We went to stumps on Day 1 very satisfied but with the knowledge that Northern Power were a formidable batting side. Our defence of the total didn’t start well. We dropped multiple catches, which allowed our opponents an 87 run opening stand in quick time. At 1/111 all hope seemed lost however the kids got together and devised a clever strategy to slow the bowling down and make the batsmen force the issue. Almost instantly the game changed as we picked up a staggering 5/1 to have them 6/112. Both sides continued to battle hard and they clawed to 7/148. Two late wickets saw them precariously poised at 9/157, however this brought their unbeaten opener in, who proved all season to be one of the best in the League. He managed to score the winning runs with two balls to spare. Our kids were understandably disappointed as they saw a Grand Final berth slip through their fingers, literally. However, I was extremely proud of their performance and made sure they knew it. They will benefit immensely from this experience and I look forward to hopefully seeing them all back next season. Thanks to all the kids for their efforts and the parents for their support. Special mention to Chris Rowan the Assistant Coach/Manager and Leticia Bailey for scoring. Also to Paul Moriarty for his coaching tips during the season and all of the Narara committee members for keeping this club so great. Mick ‘Kenno’ Kennedy (Coach)

The U14A competition this year was hotly contested with only 6 points separating the top three, whilst fourth and fifth places lingered not far behind. We ended the regular season in second place - only 4 points adrift of the Premiers, which was a mighty effort from the team. This year we built on a core of U14s whilst welcoming the U12As up an age group along with two new players: Alex Shedden and Tyler Searle. The new injection of players saw the light of Narara shining bright over the U14As this season with great team spirit displayed culminating in numerous team songs being sung at the end of the day’s play. A special thank you to Hamish for co-coaching this season; being the rock the team could depend upon to guide them through the sometimes intense competition. Also to our parents, I trust you enjoyed the season and I thank you for supporting the boys throughout unconditionally including those sometimes cold and wet mornings. Although the final was washed out, I am truly in awe of the team and their achievements this year.

Narara-Wyoming Cricket Club JUNIORS - Season 2016 - 2017 The growth in the players, and their keenness to learn made it a pleasure to coach. Hamish and I are very keen to see everyone progress in cricket and as young men, building on the success of this season and friendships developed. Finally to our Co-Captains Luke and Tom, well done on your leadership and intent all season. When a coach hardly has to provide direction, you know the team is in good hands. What a year, well done young lions, your coaches are very proud of you! Glory, Glory to Narara Hamish & Stuart (Coaches)

Cameron Bird: Cameron had an unlucky injury and broke his arm at the start of the season. He was able to return to playing cricket after the Christmas break. Cameron is always willing to have a go at batting, bowling or fielding. He has a very solid batting defence, especially being his first year playing cricket. In Round Seven Cameron got his highest score of 15 runs off about four overs, which was much needed to get us to a competitive total of 84 leading to another win for our team. I can’t wait to see you back out there playing next season Cameron.

29

Narara-Wyoming Cricket Club JUNIORS - Season 2016 - 2017 Ryan Bird: Ryan was a consistent all round player in our team this year. Ryan could stay out there batting and tick over the scoreboard even when we were losing quick wickets at the other end. Ryan also finished as our third highest leading wicket taker with 8 wickets at a brilliant economy of only 2.69. Ryan was such a positive player on the field, encouraged the other boys, and made them laugh and smile even if the team wasn’t having a good game. It was great to have you as part of the team this season Ryan. Lachlan Briggs: Lachlan started the season in the U14Ds but soon we realised he was needed to move up to our team. Lachlan finished the season with the most wicket keeping dismissals of 6 catches and 3 run out assists. In his first game for our team, Lachlan scored 38 runs not out and continued this form finishing with a batting average of 37.67. Lachlan also claimed 6 wickets bowling this season and was always keen to learn more bowling variations such as off cutters, slower balls and how to swing the ball both ways. Thank you for being so excited to learn more and more about cricket this season Lachlan, it was very enjoyable coaching you. Nathaniel Corkill: Nathaniel was our team’s all-rounder. He finished the season with 5 wickets with best figures of 2-9. Nathaniel was our 4th highest run scorer this season finishing with an average of 24.75. His highest score was 41 runs in round 5 against Kincumber Red. Nathaniel also took 2 catches this season and was always talking and encouraging everyone on the field. Nathaniel was a true team player always helping with throw downs before and during the game. It was fantastic watching you improve Nathaniel. Jayden Downs: Jayden was keen to learn and improve this season. He decided he would bowl spin and ended up taking 8 wickets this season. In round 7 a one day match, meaning 25 overs an innings, against Kincumber, Jayden bowled 3 overs taking 2 wickets for only 8 runs. Jayden’s confidence with the bat grew across the season and by round 9 he was opening the batting. He scored 11 runs this game. Jayden was a team player and always encouraged the boys on the field. He captained the first couple of games this season with a very positive attitude. Thank you for your efforts this season Jayden. Johan Fernandes: Johan was our team’s spinner this season. Johan worked on flighting the ball above the batsmen’s eyes and maximising the amount of turn he could get also. He was very quick at getting through his overs putting pressure on the batters. His economy rate was very low at 3.07 and he achieved his best bowling figures of 2-4 off 3 overs against Kincumber. Johan has developed a very good batting technique and as a result scores most of his runs straight down the ground. It was very enjoyable coaching you Johan. Tobias Fitzgibbon: Tobias was our leading run scorer this season with 192 runs at an average of 32. His highest score was in Round One of the season scoring 42 not out. Tobias also bowled well during the season taking 11 wickets and finishing with an economy rate of 2.27. His catching was very good taking 8 catches in the field and 4 behind the stumps. Tobias used his loud voice to encourage the other boys on the field and to help with field placements and tactics. Tobias was a pleasure to coach this year. Billy Flynn: Billy was the leading wicket taker this season with a total of 12 wickets. His best bowling performance was in round 3 against Warnervale where he claimed the figures of 4-3. Billy also took 2 catches this season and also got a run out. Billy was a very good talker in the field and always encouraged the other boys. Billy was a very valued member of the team and I look forward to seeing him take many more wickets in the seasons to come. Andrew Glasgall: Andrew was the fastest bowler in our team this season. Andrew learned how to control this pace and land the ball on the stumps consistently for many overs. He finished the season with 6 wickets with best figures of 2-7 off 6 overs in Round 5 against Kincumber Red who were this season’s minor premiers.

30

Narara-Wyoming Cricket Club JUNIORS - Season 2016 - 2017 Andrew also developed a solid lofted on-drive, which he used to score two 4s and win us the match in Round 6 against Lisarow in the 47th over of the game. Andrew was always asking on how he could improve his game of cricket and he was a very positive teammate always. Brennan Hall: Brennan was a consistent top order bowler in our team. Brennan has the ability to consistently land the ball on the stumps with a deceiving pace leading to 6 wickets for the season. His economy rate was 3.57 this season and often got our team in a good position early on in the game with getting through his overs quickly and not giving away many runs at all. Brennan is very quick in the field, chased many balls down, and saved many boundaries this season. Brennan always tried his hardest and never gave up on the field. Well done this season Brennan. Hayden Juillerat: Hayden was one of our wicket keepers this season. He finished the season with 4 catches behind the stumps as well as 2 run out assists. Hayden’s batting improved throughout the season as he began to take guard on leg stump, opening up the offside field for his strong off drive and cover drive. Hayden was a team player and always tried his hardest on the field. Hayden bowled both spin and medium pace this season depending on what he believed would work best for the team that game. He was a great member of the U14Cs team during the 2016/17 season. Jake Martin: Jake captained most games for the U14Cs this season. He has a very loud voice in the field and is always keen to learn different tactics for field placements. His bowling accuracy improved throughout the season and his pace increased. Jake is also one of our get out of trouble batsmen who can go in and score quick fire 20 or 30 runs. Jake listened to coaching tips at training and tried to implement them in the games. He was a pleasure to coach this season. Cody Starr: Cody was only able to play the first half of the 2016/17 season as he broke his leg. However he was a very valued member of the team and very hand with the bat. In Round Three against Warnervale, Cody scored 54 runs - his first ever 50. Cody was a good fielder and had a very good throw; he was able to throw the ball in on the full from the boundary. Cody’s confidence and enjoyment for the game grew this season and it was always exciting watching him when he was out there batting.

Congratulations to the U14D team who are 2016/17 Grand Finalists. Our season began with a compilation of players from last year’s U12s U14s and a few newcomers. It was apparent from the start that the boys were keen to learn and that there was a lot to learn. The boys quickly learned the value a of a good ‘forward defensive’ and they carried this through the season with every week being a batting order challenge as half the team would have to accept the fact that they would not get a bat

32

Narara-Wyoming Cricket Club JUNIORS - Season 2016 - 2017 this week. Bowling proved to be a bit more difficult but he boys showed continual improvement throughout the season with the whole team proving to be wicket-takers and understanding the value of a maiden over. The biggest challenges were found to be with our fielding, catching and run-outs causing some stress at different stages throughout the season. The boys trained hard in this area, showed considerable improvement, and learned that they have the skills; and that teamwork was the key to success in the field. To highlight how far the team developed in this area, the boys won the Semi-Final in the last over by only three runs against Warnervale - who were the only team to beat us twice in the regular season. Bowling second, with Warnervale scoring well above the required run rate, the boys showed composure beyond their years and closed the innings with the last six overs at 3 for 9. A great team effort and the highlight of the season. Unfortunately, we could not emulate these highs in the Grand Final, which saw us suffer the only real batting collapse of the season. The whole team can be very proud of the season’s performance with everyone showing great improvement and skill to be the 2016/17 Runners Up.

What an enjoyable and ultimately successful season! During the pre-season, we were looking a little light on for numbers before several of the boys made their mind up. Once they did, the group committed diligently to training and this paid dividends as everyone’s continual improvement contributed to the team’s results getting stronger. Prior to the Christmas break we suffered one heavy loss to the side that went on to win the minor premiership. We had a washed out draw when we were in a healthy position and won our remaining matches with strong

34

Narara-Wyoming Cricket Club JUNIORS - Season 2016 - 2017 performances where we had a mix of players all chipping in. After Christmas, we had one slip-up but won two matches and had a washed out draw to round out the season in second place, only one win from top spot. Our semi-final pitted us against Kincumber who had beaten us in the previous encounter. We started off really well, bowling tight and taking early wickets to have them 4-38. The Griffon’s no. 3 batsman did well, riding a bit of luck before we got him late and restricted them to 9-114 from their 50 overs. We bowled 17 maidens and conceded only eight bowling extras, which is an excellent indication of how well the team bowled. In reply, our opening batsmen, Nathan and Ethan, got us off to a great start moving us to 44 before we lost Nathan (22). Harry (44no) joined Ethan (38no) and put on a run-a-ball 71-run partnership to secure the win with nine wickets and 18 overs in hand. We were expecting to play Lisarow-Ourimbah in the final, as they had been the dominant side all year; however, the Magpies were upset by the Bellbirds in the other final, so a match-up against Terrigal awaited. After a glorious weekend of weather for the semi-final, the rain set in and we received the news on Friday that all northern Central Coast grounds had been closed, and we were declared the Premiers, on the basis that we were the highest-ranked winning team from the semi-final. It would have been great for the team to contest the final, however, for those of us that have been around cricket a long time, you can often be on the other side of these wash-outs, so you take the reward from being a consistent performing team all year with a bit of luck thrown in for good measure. On behalf of the team, I want to thank all of our families for their support and encouragement throughout the season. We had help with scoring, umpiring, cooking, training, raffling, ground setting and ‘mycricket’ data entry. Everyone did a little bit, which made my job that much easier to get the boys focused on cricket. What was most pleasing for me was the combination of skill and social development that took place over the year. We did have the older group and the younger group within the side but the team bonds extended within and across those groups and made a real difference to the enjoyment level. The boys understand what I expect in terms of playing in the spirit of cricket, and we did not get remotely near having any issues within our team, or with our opponents. Have a great winter and I hope to see you all back at the Club (Juniors or Seniors) next season.

NWCC Christmas Party Rob Blandford

If there is one event that outshines most others during the Cricket season, it would have to be the Narara-Wyoming Cricket Club’s ‘Family Christmas Party’. This season, we had a new venue – using the wonderful Alan Davidson Park. With an even better feel, and with just as much fun and festive flair as in previous years, we had over 150 families joining us on the night. All the old favourites were there: Santa visiting the kids on his Fire Truck ride, lolly bags, the sausage sizzle, the crowd pleasing (and exciting) ‘slip-n-slide’, games of cricket, the crazy catch, Fairy Floss, Catch the Water Balloon, and of course (and possibly the most important facet of the whole day), time for people to enjoy a cool drink, have a chat, and create some happy memories

36

Narara-Wyoming Cricket Club JUNIORS - Season 2016 - 2017

As a proud foundation cricket club, Narara-Wyoming Cricket Club prides itself on being a family orientated club; fostering goodwill, fair play, comradery, and friendship in both the junior and senior ranks. The family Christmas party is the embodiment of this spirit and brings the whole club together to celebrate, have fun, and create wonderful memories to cherish.

Behind the scenes, the NWJCC Committee worked tirelessly to ensure the event was a huge success. Special thanks to Stu Owen as lead coordinator, and other key helpers including Paul Moriarty and Chris Rowan from the Junior Committee, as well as some players and others who prepared, organised, set-up, cooked, supervised, served, and cleaned on the day.

Thank you too, to our business sponsors and supporters of the event - especially the magnificent team from Wyoming Fire Brigade, Greenacres Gourmet Meats, The Party Bus, Cake & Plate and, of course The Grange Wyoming who help us in so many ways throughout the year. To everyone who joined us, THANK YOU and we trust you had an amazing time and we look forward to having you join us again for the 2017 event. Robert Blandford (NWJCC Chairman)

Narara-Wyoming Cricket Club JUNIORS - Season 2016 - 2017

Another season ends… Now we need your help to get ready for 2017-18!

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Thursday 15th June 2017, at 7.00pm The Grange Hotel Meeting Rooms, Wyoming We are looking for new faces to join our small band of happy & friendly people that serve on the Junior Committee. All parents and supporters are welcome and encouraged to attend this meeting, as it one of the best opportunities to become more engaged in how our sport is run, and how our club will operate into the future. This is your chance to put something back into the community at a local level, so come along, say hullo, and have a chat for half an hour over a free tea or coffee with some other like-minded parents & carers at 7:00 PM, before we get formalities underway at 7:30 PM. You will be made very welcome. Nominations are open for all positions, and may be made in writing to our Secretary (secretary@nararajuniorcricket.com.au ) or from the floor on the night. A brief overview of the role and general responsibilities of each position can be provided - just ask.
