Business is What We Do...

“Whenever you see a successful business, someone once made a courageous decision.” - Peter F. Drucker, 1909 – 2005 Professor & Writer of Management-Related Literature

In the past several issues, Aesthetic Trends has focused more passionately than ever before on assisting you with the business aspect of your practice. We must be more and more prudent in spending our hard-earned dollars in the current economy. We have also learned to deliver our product to our customers in the savviest ways in order to keep their business. You are no longer dealing with uneducated patients who will try any new treatment that comes along. Patients want to see results, and they are now asking those around them and researching on their own to make sure their dispensable income is going toward a proven procedure with a benchmark. Some of you might think you have a practice and want to practice medicine. Others of you may say, “I want a thriving practice, and I want to cultivate my business.” No matter who you are or where your thought process leads you, your practice can reach its demise very quickly, should you not instill good business sense. Being cautious in understanding business principles and how to apply them to your practice will make all the difference in the world. Of course, to some it may not come naturally to run a business, after all you went to medical school! Be sure to read this issue’s Medical Spas department where Cheryl Whitman finishes off the three-part series on Business Metrics – Measurements for Success. Part III describes how you can gain beneficial knowledge about your business from demographics and lead data, a very powerful tool to better understand your target market and how to effectively generate leads for your practice, resulting in a larger patient base. Trends Editor, Mai Pham, provides an in-depth look at Fractional Resurfacing, a technology that is now in the forefront of aesthetic care. Understanding the offerings within our industry is key in making sure you are providing services that directly reflect an accurate demographic account within your city, helping you to drive your business further. In the Practice Management department, read how you can offer your patients easy payment methods that also make a financial difference in the structure of your revenue sources. And, also find out what to do in this credit crunch marketplace to continue delivering your message to your patients and to keep them coming back. I have had the opportunity to observe several practices across the country in all stages of business, i.e., the thriving practice run by a physician with entrepreneurial spirit; the new practice with the physician just coming out of medical school and wanting to do everything the right way, but needing a push; and the physician who just didn’t have the right staff and is now considering selling his practice to a physician down the street who is a booming competitor needing additional office space to continue growing. No matter where you are within the practice landscape, think about how you could help your business progress. Be courageous. Make a decision that can alter the way you do business for the better. Use the tools we have provided you and continue to share with you in areas that will help to make a monumental change in the future of your practice. Happy Holidays & Bright New Year to All!

With microablative fractional CO2 you get tissue tightening, textural, and pigmentary improvement in one session, 4-5 days’ worth of downtime, no oozing or prolonged erythema; and as a bonus, you can treat off the face, meaning no line of demarcation at the neck and Figure 2.

SMARTLIPO LASERBODY SCULPTING WORKSTATION Cynosure, Inc.

The Smartlipo LaserBodySculpting Workstation provides aesthetic surgeons with a less invasive technique than conventional liposuction methods for fat reduction and body toning. As the industry’s only laser lipolysis system designed to destroy fat cells and coagulate tissue for tighter skin, Smartlipo is ideal for treating localized fat deposits on the face and body. In addition, Smartlipo can easily treat challenging areas—such as regions of high vascularity and flaccidity. A Workstation for Every Practice Cynosure now offers three Smartlipo workstations - the 6W, 12W and 18W. All are highly safe and effective, with the higher wattage machines allowing for faster treatment and greater patient throughput. Since either of the smaller wattage systems can be upgraded, you can purchase a machine that fits your needs today and easily adapt it as your practice evolves tomorrow. How Smartlipo Works The Smartlipo laser-assisted lipolysis system is a highly efficacious solution for destroying and permanently eliminating fat cells:

• A 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser fiber is introduced through a small cannula, delivering energy directly to subcutaneous fat cells-causing them to rupture. The emitted fat melting energy also coagulates tissue, thus inducing collagen retraction and tissue tightening. • The laser causes small blood vessels to coagulate immediately— resulting in less bleeding, swelling and bruising than conventional liposuction, for faster healing and recovery. • Smartlipo can supplement or augment traditional methods of cellulite treatment. • Given the cannula’s small size and gentleness of the procedure, Smartlipo is a minimally invasive treatment that only requires local anesthesia—enhancing client safety and reducing the likelihood of side effects. • A confluent red diode laser provides a powerful visual guide during treatment. • Typically only one short treatment session is needed—enabling you to maximize your client throughput. Santilli, CFO/Executive VP Cutera Inc. was incorporated in Delaware in August 1998 as Acme Medical, Inc. The Company changed its name to Altus Medical, Inc. in July 1999 and to Cutera, Inc. in January 2004. Cutera is a global medical device company specializing in the design, development, manufacture, marketing and servicing of laser and other light-based aesthetics systems to the professional aesthetic market. Its easy-to-use families of products—CoolGlide, Xeo and Solera—enable dermatologists, plastic surgeons, gynecologists, primary care physicians and other qualified practitioners to perform safe, effective and non-invasive aesthetic procedures for its patients. The Company commercially launched its first CoolGlide product in March 2000 for hair removal, and every year since then the Company has introduced at least one new product. Cutera introduced its first Xeo product in 2003 combining pulsed light and laser treatments in a single platform. In

2004, the Company introduced its first Solera product, a compact tabletop system designed to support a single technology platform. The first technology available on the Solera platform was the Titan, a heat lamp used for deep dermal heating to treat wrinkles, which was introduced initially as an upgrade option on the Xeo platform. In 2005, Cutera added the Solera Opus to its Solera family. Each of the Cutera products consists of one or more handpieces and a console that incorporates a universal graphic user interface, a laser or other lightbased module, control system software and high voltage electronics. Its unique CoolGlide, Xeo and Solera families of products provide the long-lasting benefits of laser and other light-based aesthetic treatments. Its technology allows for a combination of the widest variety of applications available in a single system. Most recently, Cutera added the LimeLight and Pearl to its portfolio of products. Cutera sells, markets and distributes its products in the United States through a direct sales force supported by a team of technical service specialists. The Company’s research and development group develops new products to address unmet or underserved market needs. It manufactures its products with components and subassemblies supplied by vendors. Cutera assembles and tests each of its products at its Brisbane, CA, facility.

When researching this device, the two things that stood out in my mind are its affordable price tag ($73,500) and proprietary scanning algorithm, which ensures that each strike of the micro-beam is separated by the longest possible interval. This fixed scanning pattern reduces the amount of thermal injury, which reduces patient pain and downtime.

Diameter may be the problem, not the depth of penetration.” If you are evaluating these devices, you should ask yourself: Is it the depth of the ablation, the density (amount of skin ablated), or the diameter of the ablation that gives the best results? Until we have some good split-face studies and long-term follow-up results with a larger patient pool, we will not know for sure. In the Consumer Credit Crunch Market–

Stay the Course!

• Using your Website to use Internet specials, holiday special offers, gift certificates, e-newsletters, broadcast emails. Remember more consumers are spending time online versus getting in their cars to go to shopping. • Reconnecting with patientsof-record by using broadcast emails, holiday greeting cards with an incentive to visit, flyers, and special offers. • Holding a special event for referring patients, inviting them to bring a friend, and providing “thank you gifts.” • Advertising in local newspapers holiday gifts, beauty makeovers, seminars. Remember, it is not necessarily as important to fill up the seminars as it is to make the phone ring to create opportunities for sales.
