Mauricio Kagel (1931-2008) was among the most distinctive composers of contemporary music. From the very beginning his name has been associated above all with music theatre, a genre which he has exerted the greatest impact upon. Besides his radical innovations in this area, he also developed a highly personal aesthetic in his instrumental music.

Kagel’s oeuvre encompasses not only stage, orchestral and chamber music with a wide range of instrumental settings, but also film scores, radio plays and essays. Throughout its broad spectrum, his music reveals a breach with academicism and close ties to tradition, especially to the German music tradition.

Imagination, originality and humour are hallmarks of Kagel’s music. With inexhaustible powers of invention, he made use of a very wide array expressive devices which, although often caustic and provocative, are always placed in the service of musical discourse.

His works are honoured with many awards, including the Erasmus Award (1998), the Ernst von Siemens Music Award (2000), the Großer Rheinischer Kunstpreis (2002) and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Siegen (2007).

Mauricio Kagel (1931-2008) zählt zu den profiliertesten Komponisten der zeigenössischen Musik. Von jeher wurde sein Name vor allem mit dem Musiktheater assoziiert, jener Gattung, auf die er wohl den tiefgreifendsten Einfluss ausgeübt hat. Neben den radikalen Neuerungen auf diesem Gebiet hat er aber auch im Bereich der Instrumentalmusik eine eigenständige Ästhetik entwickelt.

Das Schaffen des Komponisten umfasst nicht nur Bühnen-, Orchester. und Kammermusikwerke in den vielfätigsten Besetzungen, sondern auch Filme, Hörspiele und Essays. In dem breiten Spektrum seiner Werke manifestiert sich der Bruch mit jedwedem Akademismus, gleichzeitig aber auch eine enge Beziehung zur Tradition, insbesondere der deutschen.

Phantasie, Originalität und Humor zeichnen das Œuvre Kagels aus. Mit unerschöpflicher Erfindungsgabe bediente er sich der verschiedensten Ausdrucksmittel, die oft bissig und provozierend wirken, jedoch immer im Dienste der musikalischen Intensität stehen.

Sein Schaffen wurde mit vielen wichtigen Preisen gewürdigt. So erhielt er unter anderem den Erasmus-Preis (1998), den Ernst von Siemens Musikpreis (2000) und den Großen Rheinischen Kunstpreis (2002). Im Jahr 2007 wurde Mauricio Kagel von der Universität Siegen zum Ehrendoktor ernannt.
