EDINA COMMUNITY Education

Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) is for families with children birth through Pre-kindergarten who want to lay a healthy foundation for lifelong learning while getting children ready for kindergarten.

WHAT’S INSIDE? Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) classes are designed to strengthen families and support children’s healthy growth and development. We provide education, classes, and support for families with children from birth through pre-kindergarten. Our licensed teachers work to support parenting skills and parental confidence and help young children develop their physical, emotional, language, cognitive and social potential. From full-year and short term classes to playtime and special events, ECFE programs: • Provide expert coaches to help guide your parenting decisions and practices. • Offer shared parenting/caregiver experiences that will foster new family friendships and relationships. • Support your child’s healthy development through engaging activities. • Give families a chance to step away from the rapid pace of today’s world and ease the stress families face.

A TYPICAL ECFE CLASS INCLUDES

• Parent Child Activity Time: You and your child together enjoy a classroom filled with developmentally appropriate play and learning activities. • Parent Discussion: You’ll meet with other parents and a licensed parent educator to share experiences and information about child development and parenting techniques. • Children’s Activity Time: While you are in parent discussion (in separating classes), children learn and play with licensed early childhood teachers. Children practice social skills and will enjoy music, art, stories, dramatic play and creative movement.

EVERY CLASS INCLUDES • Activities where parents and children learn together. • Time for children to learn and interact with one another. • Parent education time with a licensed parent educator. Tuition for most classes is based on a sliding fee scale with payment plans and fee assistance available upon request. Most classes offer child care for siblings six weeks through 5 years of age who are not enrolled in a class.

BUSY BABIES Separating from mommy can be very scary! Just ask any 7-11 month old. Our teachers understand that very well and they strive to make the time away from mommy as easy and gentle as possible. Through play, singing, reading books and one on one time, your baby will learn to trust the teachers, have fun with other babies, explore a safe-clean classroom, and most importantly….that mommy always comes back!

Early Childhood Developmental Screening is a check of a child’s development, vision and hearing, growth, health history and immunizations. Screening takes approximately one hour, and a parent or legal guardian stays with the child during the screening process. Screening takes place at the Edina Community Center and is FREE. Early Childhood Developmental screening helps a school district identify children who may benefit from district and community resources available to help in their development. Screening includes a vision screening that helps detect potential eye problems but is not a substitute for a comprehensive eye exam. Screening is recommended when a child is 3-1/2 to 4 years old, but must be completed before starting kindergarten in a Minnesota public school. At the conclusion of the screening, the parent/legal guardian will be given a summary of the screening results and have the opportunity to discuss concerns they may have about their child’s development or circumstances that could affect their child’s learning. Information regarding early childhood programs and other resources will be available. The screening summary will become a part of the child’s school record.Parents accompany their child through the approximate hour-long process. After the screening activities, the screener shares information on a child’s growth, development, and learning. The State of Minnesota recommends an interpreter be used for the parents or child if English is not the primary language spoken at home. Using the home 16 | ECFE 2016-2017

language during screening can provide a better picture of a child’s development. Interpreter services are provided at no cost to the family. A parent or legal guardian should accompany your child to the screening. If you must send a relative or childcare provider in your place, please note this on your Appointment Request Form as special arrangements will need to be made to obtain your permission and signature on required documents.

SCREENING IS BY APPOINTMENT ONLY

To schedule a screening appointment for your child: • Please complete the form and submit electronically • Or print the form and mail/fax to us An email message confirming your appointment will be sent to you within two school days.
