FROM THE EDITOR

The Edge, from its debut in 1992 until now, has belonged to the holistic community of the Upper Midwest.

The Edge: the little publication that could by Tim Miejan ack in 1992, a couple of adventurous people from the Twin Cities — a salesman interested in metaphysics and an editor keen on writing about natural wellness — joined forces to start a newspaper to support a growing community of like-minded folks. They emphasized open-mindedness and vowed to be the only paper in the Upper Midwest where people of all beliefs, no matter how far out, could express themselves without judgment. They asked the community to step with them — beyond the comfort zone, beyond the accepted norms — out onto the edge. And businesses and individuals throughout the Upper Midwest did just that. They gathered around this little publication that could and sustained it for nearly 20 years now. While the size and format of The Edge has changed over the years, and the staffs have changed, it maintains the same commitment to a community of people who carry the flame for holistic living in their souls. These people are committed to sharing their truths about our personal opportunity to glean solutions to our problems from our soul wisdom, which supports us in living whole, balanced lives. There are myriad ways to find that balance, to find that connection to soul, to find healing, holistically. Sharing that is what The Edge has always been about. Despite our differences — and religion certainly causes some people to keep a distance from some holistic paths — each of us is an energetic being with a soul that informs and directs our passage through life. Our choice, as individuals, is whether we want to connect to that most precious part of who we are. The Edge — now more than ever — supports holistic businesses and individuals on this path: In print throughout the Upper Midwest; online and through our virtual flipbook magazine on desktops around the world; and over the airwaves on audio programs featured on our Edge Talk Radio network. I am taking the opportunity now to thank those who have paved the way, especially the businesses that have found value in The Edge and have helped support it, and the readers who have been served over the years. a

COMING EVENTS Twin Cities Kirtan Festival returning March 10 The third annual Twin Cities Kirtan Festival, a celebration of Sanskrit chant music, known as Kirtan, will take place March 10, featuring local chant bands, holistic wellness practitioners and guided meditations. The event will be from 4-11 p.m. Saturday, March 10 at One Yoga, a nonprofit Yoga studio, at 721 W. 26th St., Minneapolis. Tickets are $20, available in advance online and at the event. Kirtan is a form of bhakti yoga; the yoga of devotion. The music connects participants with their hearts and spirits, and evokes feelings of bliss. The festival will demonstrate a broad range of what the local Kirtan scene has to offer. Local chant bands have their own unique sound. The event will also feature a holistic wellness area, with practitioners offering their services by donation, as well as guided meditations. Cross the street, for a bite to eat, at Common Roots Cafe or French Meadow Bakery and Café, which both offer organic and gluten-free menus. The event, which will include door prizes — yoga music, products and more — is produced by Raising the Consciousness. For questions, please contact colleen@raisingtheconsciousness.com. Online tickets are available at www.raisingtheconsciousness.com. a

THE Edge launches monthly networking event A monthly networking event will debut on March 12 in Minneapolis, allowing participants to explore the holistic diversity of the Twin Cities. On the 12th of each month, a different business will be spotlighted, and the variety of those taking part will allow you to explore and network through conscious wholeness. The event is free and open to all professionals, as well as individual seekers. On March 12, Desiree Brazelton will highlight topics on Classical Homeopathy. Also, find out about Complementary & Alternative Medicine options for vaccination, allergies and other applications. The event will be from 7-9 p.m. at Spark Clinic’s new location at 4748 Chicago Ave., Minneapolis. For directions/parking to Spark Clinic, visit SparkClinic.org or call 612.232.6453. The 12th of the month was selected for gatherings because, for one, it’s 2012…and secondly (and more importantly), 1+2 = 3. In numerology, 3 is all about merging and coming together. Three is the epitome of goodness, pure love, creativity and self-expression. Jupiter is also the “lord” of the number 3, and is often called the “Guru” or Spiritual Master. a

PUBLIC FORUM: GROWING THE LOCAL FOOD ECONOMY The League of Women Voters Minneapolis will present a public forum on growing our food locally, with an overview of the local food system revolution now taking place in the community. The event will take place at Plymouth Congregational Church, 1900 Nicollet, at Franklin Avenue from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday, March 22. Those who attend will have an opportunity to enjoy food samples, view exhibits, meet participating sponsors and register for door prizes from Eastside, Wedge, Seward and Linden Hills Co-ops. Participants include: LaDonna Redmond of the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, Commissioner Gretchen Musicant from Minneapolis Health Department, Collie Graddick with Community Table Cooperatives, Tim Brownell of Eureka Recycling, and Hennepin County compost specialist, John Jaimez. The forum is sponsored by the League of Women Voters and the working group Caring for Creation of Plymouth Church. Special thanks for funding from Health Partners. This event is free and open to the public.a March 2012 edge magazine

HEALING

Cancer: a disingenuous disease A real-time healing journey

by Cheryl Hiltibran First of a series

M

ammogram, ultrasound exam — I was optimistic. I thought being conscious about my health and exercising regularly would keep serious illness from inhabiting my body. I am wrong. The week between hearing, “You have cancer,” and meeting with the surgeon was emotionally draining. I envisioned my left breast malformed from lumpectomy, felt the itchy, burned skin damaged from radiation, visualized myself bald from chemo, and wondered, Would I feel like I do when I am sitting naked in a wilderness campsite sipping tea? I imagined myself after mastectomy. Lopsidedness? Twenty years ago, I knew a marathon runner who unabashedly ran with a well-formed breast on one side. She seemed comfortable and confident both as a runner and a one-breasted woman. Could I be so courageous? After the appointment I had a better sense of the surgical process. I got a stern recommendation to schedule surgery soon, definitely within four weeks, and meet with the other oncologists after my surgery was scheduled. Healing or Handling? A tiny Stage One tumor seems to stir up lots of dust — like a bull warning he is about to charge; I felt trampled by the sheer force of the actions called a “cure.” I insisted on appointments with the radiation and medical oncologists. At each appointment I would ask, “Extreme sleep deprivation this year has greatly compromised my immune system and I’m still recovering. Wouldn’t it be extremely difficult on my body’s ability to heal to have surgery, radiation, or chemo at this time?” The first doctor said, “Don’t wait more than a month to have surgery.” The second, the medical oncologist, explained my diagnosis, options, risks, and side effects. From here I learned that all the medical options have risks and side effects — and my decisions were about how much I believed I could tolerate. I researched online, got support from close friends. A niggling feeling, a mere quiver, kept me from jumping onto the conveyor belt of traditional breast cancer treatment. I could not take that step. Instead I paused, listened to my inner guidance, and heard

the whisper, Pay Attention! You are holding back…for a reason. Words from Wisdom Then I remembered — whenever I face a major decision I can break the gridlock: I put aside the plethora of information and listened to the Divine (my preferred word for God). I relaxed into a meditative state, allowing the niggling feeling to be my guide. Stillness. Then a series of rapid-fire, visceral, full-body memories. The doctor is saying, “Complete knee dislocation is a very serious injury. I will put it back, then see about surgery.” Next I’m in the hospital bed, right leg in a toe-to-hip cast, visualizing blood flowing to my toes and back, washing away toxins and healing my injury, even though I am oozy and dizzy from the pain. Yes, I commanded my blood to heal my knee, leg and ankle. That was 1975; I hadn’t heard of creative visualization. The next memory, more recently, a surgeon on the phone is reviewing my MRI, explaining why I need surgery for two cartilage tears. He keeps wanting to transfer me to the scheduling nurse; I insist he answer my questions instead. As I hang up I say, “Thanks, you told me what I need to know to heal my knee.” And I did. Searing heat burns my fingers as I grab the 350-degree casserole lid. I calmly replace the lid and recall how my fingers were before touching it. Holding that as my experience, the heat in my fingers dissipates; they never “took on” the burn. As inky blackness envelopes me the inner voice speaks, How did you decide not to be a scientist? Registering for eighth-grade classes, my hand freezes as I start to write Biology. It would not move. Biology? I would have to dissect a frog…. My inner-self spoke, I am against intrusive research! My body vibrated in agreement. (And I did make it through eighth grade Biology, high school, and college science classes without ever dissecting an animal.) Clarity and Choice Back in the present, I hear my mind respond to this barrage of images and sensations. But this is cancer, not surgery for my knee! The ensuing silence seems to say “So?!” This is cancer! Somewhere inside, feelings and inner voice conferred. But this is an illness! I’m not sure I can overcome this. Cancer continued on page 23 

ASTROLOGY

CLEAR IT OUT: LIVE YOUR AUTHENTICITY by DK Brainard

T

Star Wisdom March 2012

he first Mercury Retrograde of 2012 starts on March 12 in Aries, the sign of passionate, impulsive action. This retrograde is highly focused on clearing old programming so that we can live as our authentic selves. Aries (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)…Your hard work begins to pay off this month, thanks to a powerful Grand Trine linking your money, work, and career houses. You’ll do best with this positive energy if you resolve to flow with the rhythm of life rather than trying to push the river. A potent New Moon in your sign on March 22 is going to blow things wide open for you, so be ready to strike when opportunity hits. Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20)…A rare Venus-Jupiter conjunction in your sign sets up a wonderfully positive energy circuit this month. You can activate this circuit by staying focused on what you love to do and sharing your creativity with generosity. When you give your unique gift to the world with the desire to make everyone around you better, you open the door to a whole new level of opportunity. Gemini (May 21-June 20)…Stay focused on the fact that the inner world creates the outer world this month. Your family patterns continue to come up to be released and you’re getting amazing intuitive guidance that can show you how to break persistent patterns of selfsabotage. You have a tremendous opportunity to rewrite your story now, but you need to be resolute in working from the inside out. Cancer (June 21-July 22)…You should meet at least one new person this month who gets you and shares your vision of what life could be. This person can help you step into your life’s work but in order to make this connection you need to make yourself available. Choose to spend your social time — whether online or in person — with like-minded people, rather than the same old “friends” who depend on you and drain your energy. Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)…You have incredible career mojo this month, as the two good luck planets, Venus and Jupiter, travel hand-in-hand in your house of career and reputation. This isn’t just blind luck, either. The opportunities being presented to you now are clearly a result of the long, hard work you’ve done on your life while no one else was watching or clapping. Expect the best now and remember that you’ve earned it. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)…Yes, this Mars Retrograde has been frustrating, but that’s only because you haven’t been able to see just what it is you’re supposed to be learning. You get that information — and a whole lot more — beginning with the Virgo Full Moon on the 8th. When stepping into your power becomes a process you can follow, not just empty words, you’re on the verge of something great. Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)…You continue to do a lot of soul-searching and clearing old patterns, but guess what? It feels good! In fact, it looks as if someone steps up this month to help you do this work in a way that’s powerful but also enjoyable. As you get clearer on who you are, expect your relationships to change. You’ve no more time for people who can’t be real with you.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)…Getting clearer on what you really, really long to create in your life is opening the door for a whole new class of relationship. Can you handle one or more creative, generous people who are willing — and able — to give as much as they get from you? I hope so, because life is waiting for you to say yes. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)…Whether you’re looking for financial backing or an individual with the skills and connections to help you get to the next level, someone wants to help you grow your income and step into your power. Be willing to accept constructive criticism that can help you refine your strategy and make your business more efficient and attractive. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)…Your creativity is blooming this month, and with it comes a new recognition of your own beauty and worth to the world. If you haven’t made the connection yet, all of this positive change is a direct result of the energy and effort you’ve invested into your spiritual practice over the last five years or so. Acknowledging your ability to manifest the life you want opens the door to even more abundance. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)…This is kind of a mystical month for you. The word that comes to mind when I look at the energy around your home and family is blessed. If you’ve been looking to move, you might stumble into the perfect situation. But the deeper level of this month’s energy is the opportunity to connect with your soul in a way that makes you feel at home in your own skin and safe in the world like never before. Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)…Someone has stepped into your life who actually seems grounded and ethical enough to partner with you in creating the life you envision for yourself. Remember that you’ve created this situation with your thoughts and resist the urge to give your power away to this person. Instead, focus on what you want and need from the relationship and communicate that clearly. Co-dependency won’t cut it in 2012! a Listen to “Edge Astrology with D.K. y all stretches of the imagination, John Peterson is not what you expect for a former Navy man who worked in submarines. Yes, he has spent his work life in electronics, technology, communications, factory automation, robotics, motor generators, conveyers and packaging, but he also is a deep thinker who reads Ken Wilber, talks to Jesus and is highly intuitive. When he worked as a technician, he could sleep on a problem and know the solution when he woke up. In his role now in sales and customer service, he’s known as “the troubleshooter,” because he sees the whole picture and tends to speak with feelings. Many holistic types in the Twin Cities know him as Psy-Guy, the moniker he uses for the work he does on the side, as a psychic, healer, palm reader, medical intuitive, certified hypnotherapist, spiritual shaman and…XL medium. He cites Doreen Virtue, Wayne Dyer and Deepak Chopra as people who have inspired him on his path. “It really boils down to: Who do you believe — and does it fit your faith?” he says. “I think the faith part is really the most important thing — defining that for yourself. Mine is really simple: I believe in angels, I believe in miracles, I believe in an everlasting soul and I believe in reincarnation. …Wouldn’t it be a wonderful world if we all believed it was all just about the soul — and nothing else?” John Peterson, a native of St. Paul and graduate of Chisago Lakes High School, calls himself a “soul messenger,” because he is able to listen to the soul and share wisdom to help others navigate their lives. The following conversation with The Edge reveals a man who has much to offer in these changing times.

What was your earliest intuitive experience? John Peterson: I was telepathic with my

mother. At ages 6, 7, 8, I remember that she always knew where I was. It’s that third eye thing. Moms all have that (laughing). In my later teen years, it was following her on her seeking for a spiritual path – going to different churches and different types of gatherings. She was searching for something other than

religion, and I tagged along. That was my first exposure, but it was nothing definitive. From high school, I went into the service and that’s when things opened up for me. The first time. I was in the Navy on submarines and I just had a gut feeling about things. I also had some trials in which my hands became so sensitive that I couldn’t pick up a wrench or other tools. I couldn’t squeeze anything. My hands were very energized, like all of the chakras were on all of the time. I went to the doctor, the corpsman, and I was sent to the base clinic. They looked at it, didn’t know what it was and gave me some medication. It turned out it was penicillin, and it turned out I was allergic to penicillin and broke out in hives. Even now I will experience that in my hands, when they hurt, but I look at that as, “Oh, they’re really turned on today.” So it was a blessing, a gift. They threw a gift at me but I didn’t know what it was. I wasn’t ready for it at the time. What sparked your intuition for the second time? JP: In ’94, I was in California at an expo

related to the industry I was in at the time. I walked around the corner and there was a psychic from England doing aura picture readings. I was intrigued. I watched and thought, “This is really cool.” She said, “Who’s next?” and I jumped in the chair. She read me and then said, “Wow, you have a huge blue aura with

a magenta corona around it.” It looked like it was glowing. It was a really cool picture. I didn’t think anything of it. I went home and said, “Hey, look at this – isn’t it cool?” About six months later, my hip went out at work. I went to a chiropractor and it turned out she was a healer. She introduced me to meditation, crystal energy and a woman who healed herself from Lupus. She was presenting a free lecture. So I went to the lecture and was totally absorbed. This was a new calling for me. I couldn’t sit down for a week. I took classes and learned how to heal myself. It was that time in my life when I was looking for something else. You know, you don’t like your life, you don’t like your job and you’re just a bitter person, so to speak. I came out of that as a certified ThetaHealer®. That is based on the Chinese 5 Element theory: earth, fire, water, metal and wood. I learned a little about psychic surgery, visualization, past-present-future stuff. I was so interested in energy and read book after book. I turned to Reiki and became a Reiki master. I worked on sensing energy and found when I was scanning someone’s body, I would get pictures of parts of organs. I didn’t know what I was looking at, so I took a nursing class on physiology and anatomy, and then was a medical intuitive. It’s been quite a ride! Since then, I became a certified hypnotherapist. You call yourself a Soul Messenger. Will you elaborate on that? JP: I have studied the soul from the

beginning, since I’ve been on my own personal path. I’ve read all the books about the soul’s transition — when we cross over, what happens to our soul? What we do as people is just a memory for the soul. The soul has had many instances of being in a human form, and each one for the soul looks like a memory. When I connect to someone in front of me, I look at the soul as my connection to that person’s truths. And I listen. The connection that we make takes me to places where the ego wouldn’t go. Things come through that only the soul knows. What led you to consciously decide to use your intuitive gifts professionally?

JP: I walked through the Edge Expo — I think it was the first one — and I was so energized by the energy that I was doing readings in the aisles. I see the aura around people, and I’m encouraged to acknowledge that for people. “Wow, you’ve got a gorgeous aura!” And people like to hear that. I really started out as a medical intuitive, and that led to more exploration about being a healer and psychic. The palm reads have been of great interest during the last four or five years, and I’m always amazed at the information that they carry. They’re so detailed. It’s like an open book of who we are. Your first book — you describe it as a booklet — was Excuse Me, Have You seen your Soul. Why did you write that and what message did you want to leave with your reader? JP: During my early years when I was trying to find my own

course, one of the people who I learned to listened to was Jesus — and how His healing was really what He was here for. He was here to represent a different way of living, and that was through the lessons of the soul. The soul’s lessons are easy: listen with your heart, offer no judgment, walk in compassion and be humble. That’s really what the book is about — with my own trials and errors, as well, and my interpretations of life, what I’ve chosen to be my faith. He said to me, “I came here to show you a different way of living. I did not say that the only way to God is through me. I said, the only way to God is to be like me.” And I thought, “What a perfect message.” There’s no man in that, and there’s no church in that. It’s purely from the soul. And where’s our soul from? From our creator. I have to believe it’s the truth. That’s the message of the book. It’s written with some humor and includes some stories of my experiences with angels, how they appear. Two stories are in the back of the book. Will you share them with us? JP: I was playing with the spirits one day coming back from

Iowa on a work trip, and I said, “I want to see triple license plate numbers beginning with 000 in sequence up through 999.” I’ll be darned if the first car that went past had license plates of 000. So I got goosebumps, right? We’ll talk about gooses in a minute. A couple more cars went by with 111, 222, 333 and so on. I happened to go by County Road 77 and I said, “That doesn’t count. It’s only two digits.” Bang! Next car: three sevens. And then up to 9. And I said, “Whoopee guys, you won the game!” And then the next car was 000 again, and I said, “I’m not playing again! (laughing) You got my attention, I’m a firm believer and thanks for playing!” That was really a gotcha moment. Another was in Northern Minnesota, early morning, going down this two-lane highway, up and down on the hills. I came up over the crown of this hill and down on the left-hand side, down in a swamp where it was a little misty, were a couple of these dark, black things down the road. I thought, “I don’t know what those are, but I just know they are gonna come across in front of me when I get down there.” So I start slowing down and I get closer and see that it’s two geese. And sure enough, they walk across the road and are sitting about in the middle, and I have to come to a complete stop. And I look, and one of them looks down the road in front of me and honks, and the other one looks at me and honks. And they both took off. I look straight up and there’s a 12-point buck fifteen feet in front of my truck that I would’ve hit full bore at 60 miles per hour. So I think those geese were angels in disguise.   We see these things, we experience them. I think those are divine intervention, I really do.

INTUITION

3 I

ways to strengthen your intuition for decision making

by Leah Skurdal ntuition, combined with intellect, makes a stronger decision than intellect alone. When you are making an important decision, turn on your intuition to notice something that might inform you at a deeper level than intellectual thought. Our senses are bombarded every day with information overload. If you rely solely on externals to make decisions, you might not be serving your higher needs. Developing a strong intuitive sense of inner guidance will help you more easily navigate changes in your life. People sense intuition in various ways depending on their preferred learning style. You might experience a sudden insight or knowingness, a thought, a feeling in the heart or the gut, or a kinesthetic body reaction as your preferred doorway to intuition. My insights often come as an awareness or a feeling — often in the shower or while washing

the dishes. When I try to think about the awareness, my mind takes over to translate the idea into words. Take note when your intuition fails you so that you can fine tune your intuitive skills. You improve your intuitive abilities through practice and by listening to your internal guidance system. Learning to discern the still, small voice of intuition over the ego’s mind chatter will bring you peace. Some people have a more natural aptitude for sensing their intuition, just like some people have a more natural aptitude for mathematics or for throwing a ball. However, you can develop and strengthen an internal language of intuition through practice and by paying attention to your body, mind and spirit. You can take action steps through your intellect, to create an environment where your intuition can thrive. Use these three body-based steps to strengthen and fine-tune your intuition: • Pay attention to your nutrition — Your body, mind and spirit are your instruments for intuition to pass through. Hone your physical body by upgrading your nutrition. Add high-quality fuel for maximum intuitive performance. To get ready for the day, gently cleanse your liver by drinking a glass of water with fresh-squeezed, organic lemon juice every morning. Opt for eggs and wholegrain toast rather than a pastry and latté for breakfast. Lean toward whole foods over processed foods, the fresher the better. Choose healthy, less-processed snacks like nuts and fruit over chips and chocolate. (Gasp! I am a recovering chocolate addict, and sometimes fall off the wagon.) Even if you occasionally fall off the wagon, remain steady in the direction you are heading — toward more nutrient dense, life-sustaining, whole foods and a healthier, more vibrant body, mind and spirit. • Physically move your body — Physical bodies are electromagnetic fields of energy. Raising the level of energy vibration in one area of your life, such as physical movement or nutrition, will raise the energy vibration in the whole field. So how do you like to move? What

18

HOLISTIC LIVING

do you need to have in place to keep you actively moving? Getting a big dog that you need to walk every day might get you moving, but it might also create a bigger commitment than you want. Instead, perhaps commit to movement with a walking buddy, a dance partner or an exercise cohort. Go to what you know or try something new: Yoga, T’ai Chi, Zumba, aerobics, Latin dancing, adult ballet — whatever gets energy flowing through your body. You could simply decide to recommit to your own discipline. I use a set of free weights several times a week and practice what I call Body-Soul Movement. I create a sacred, quiet space that usually includes different types of music. Then, I tune in to my body wisdom and observe how my body wants to move at that time. I give my body permission to inform me about tightness or where I am holding on. Oftentimes, while in Body-Soul Movement, I receive intuitive understandings about the next right decision. • Notice where emotions stay stuck in your body — Your physical and mental bodies sometimes become entangled with emotions that make decisions more challenging. Maintenance of your emotional instrument also will serve your intuitive decision-making capabilities. Notice, for instance, that when you think of a work situation, you get a tightness in your gut. In that situation, your body is informing you about an unprocessed emotion. Many people carry the weight of the world on their shoulders, resulting in tension headaches and increased stress from the pain of tight muscles. Is your neck informing you that someone in your life is a “pain in the neck?” What are your jaws telling you about anger that you need to express? Is constipation caused by being “all knotted up” inside? Try talking to the knot in your gut, the pain in your neck, or the ache in your heart. What is it trying to tell you? Ask the wise part of yourself what you can learn from the pain. Breathe into the knot, the pain or the ache. Then listen. Deeply. Listen with your whole heart. Let go of needing an answer. Let go of your need to be right about

The Trouble With Evolving by Linda Johansen

The trouble with evolving Is that it changes everything. Each step into freedom tugs at A masterpiece I built for safety — Those pet defenses I never leave home without Lest I feel naked.

In the void beside the sea of the unknown I hear a calling to step in and take the ride. Okay, I say, but I’ll wait here on shore ’Til the boat comes by. There is no boat, the Voice replies. Your vessel is made on the journey. Back in the silence at the threshold I cast my gaze upon the waters. Must I go alone? Where are my people? I feel abandoned on the darkest night. Through the tiniest glimmer of light, shadows appear Of soul mates I met in my dreams Waves of love are coming to greet me And that changes everything.

Truth

by Victoria Pendragon The truth burns inside me As though it were lies That’s the thing about abuse It has its own life Your life Is its life But no one sees it Save you And you walk about All normal Until Something random happens

that person who is a pain in the neck. Being right justifies holding on to your pain. What if the other person was right, too, from their perspective? What if, by listening to your body, you came to a sense of awareness about what the pain could teach you? Years ago, I held on to a horrendously painful knot in my right shoulder for many months. Nothing I or my massage therapist did could get rid of that knot. Then finally, one day, during a massage, I opened my heart to my intuitive wisdom and reached the roots of resentment that I had been holding onto for so long. By the next day, the knot had almost disappeared.

A child cries A song plays Someone touches you Just so And the cells of your body cringe Or quail Or cower quietly As you dissolve inside Your hidden truth Exposed But only to you Wondering where does your truth lie When you’ve been told your truth is lies

When I am open and listening to its wisdom, my body still informs me. Today, I rub my sore thumb joint and ask what I need to know about this pain. I understand that I am “gripping the steering wheel of life” and that I need to relax and allow life’s good to flow through me. Sigh. Sounds pretty wise. Maybe I could lighten up a little. IF I COULD DO ANYTHING The featured topic in 2012 relates to your experience…how you felt, what you learned…the ah-ha’s, the magic, the growth and how it changed the course of your life. This month: If I Could Do Anything. Next month: The Joy of Collaboration (submit by March 7)

LIVING A FANTASY OR LIVING MY TRUTH? by Lori Bestler ecently I had a very dear friend tell me that I was living a fantasy. The way he viewed what was realistic and the way I viewed what was possible caused a clash of perceptions and interpretations. “Is it not a gift when the imagination is given permission to soar, in living color, limitless in its desires?” I asked. How sad and tragic it is when people are so stuck in sameness and their limiting beliefs that they cannot see the blessing that awaits them. I imagined that I could set any goal and bring it to life. I had dreams. I wondered, “If I could do anything I wanted, what would it be?” Days passed as I relived that conversation numerous times in my mind, hearing what I felt were offensive words, feeling a bit betrayed and rather wounded for several weeks. Then one day, it was as if a switch flipped in my thinking, and I quickly shifted my emotions from feeling bad to being glad. In truth, I always knew that they broke the mold when I was born, and many of my ways are unique, original, and one of a kind. I certainly am not created to be a follower, but to be an encourager and a guide to awaken others. I am willing to step outside of the box and dare to be different. This gives me the ability to imagine impossibilities as possibilities. I thought, “Well, didn’t people think that Benjamin Franklin was living a fantasy while he worked relentlessly to invent electricity? Didn’t naysayers and doubters say the Wright Brothers were living a fantasy when they believed they could fly? How many people thought Amelia Earhart was living a fantasy believing she would be the first women to fly around the world? Who thought Rosa Parks was crazy to fantasize that blacks would ride

Tell me about your newest book, Afterlife Reflections: Pieces of Soul. JP: With hypnosis behind me, I began expe-

riencing some new things. One of the things we work on as therapists is fear. I was working with a woman, who’s a friend, talking with her about her greatest fear. And she said, “I have a fear of being alone.” She said she’s continually fearful about her husband leaving, or dying

the bus in dignity? How many people doubted the daring individuals who fantasized they would fly a man to the moon?” Soon, as my mind wandered off from one person’s limiting perception to numerous others who had a fantasy that came true, I became more confident that my expectancies were founded in some way. I found a fresh inner strength growing within my spirit, encouraging me to hold fast to my fantasies, regardless of what others think. In truth, our country was founded on fantasy. Of course, for dreams to become reality, this requires a plan, a commitment and a focused effort to achieve what we really want, with a yearning that burns deep within the soul. We are the authors of our own best-selling book, or the architects of our own misfortune. And for me to do anything I want is to live a life by my design, not someone else’s system. I want to make each moment a journey, an opportunity to discover those things that take my breath away and nurture a life I’ll never forget, and never regret. I want to manifest what my heart desires and soul requires, so I can be my best self daily — happy, healthy and successful in my own right, living in the most profound reality I can create. Ultimately, I want to live out of the abundance I have, however trivial I may at times think it is, while on my way to so much more. a Lori Bestler, C.H., offers a variety of hypnosis and coaching programs including weight loss, stress reduction, procrastination, focus, goal achievement, life coaching and small business coaching. and leaving her alone. So we talked about that at length one time, and I said, “There’s something more about this.” What I found out is that there’s a story behind her. …What I was doing was listening to a story of her soul’s first existence as a human. So I kept writing and then sensed that there’s another part of this and I’m just starting to see it. It’s about this young girl who gets exposed to different aspects of intuition. This story is about the journey of a soul’s 

PERFECT LOVE: A QUEST TO BE AS GOD by Jerry Buchmeier f I could do anything, I would see as God sees, and love as God loves. Just saying this out loud, and writing it on this page, I feel the longing for such an openness and loving connection welling up within my breast. But what preposterous thoughts! How could I even begin to recognize what God sees and how God loves? An ocean in a teaspoon? Such presumptuousness! Disregard hope for that freedom, that peace, that joy. God says: “Beloved, I am with you and within you. Your thoughts are My thoughts. Your loves are My loves.” “Thank you,” I say. “But how can I see what You see, when I’m locked into this small mind and body?” “What I see, you also shall see. What I love, you also shall love. We are not so different as you might suppose. Consider even now, through your own eyes, you can see the ripples of love emanating from the smile of an infant, from the movements of a chipmunk, from the majesty of a mountain, the tranquility of a calm lake, the energy of a thunderstorm, and the colors of a sunset.” “And that which I fear and hate,” I ask, “how do You see them?” “I see them as that which brings you to a new stage of perfection. I see them as that which energizes you to live, love, take action and thrive. I see them as what you came to physical life for. To live in unending love and joy, you would have stayed with Me in the spirit world.” I reply, “And my pain? My illnesses? My lethargy, physical and emotional? What of them?” “I see them as your friends, who slow you down, who allow you to let go of your ambition, your need to control, your illusion of total independence — friends who encourage you to find Me in your own depth.” “Then,” I ask, “how do I move from perceiving as You do, to loving as You do?” “To see and to love are not so different as you might suppose either. It follows as the day follows the night. You come into the light, and

I

awaken to the joy of a new day. As you see only friends surrounding you, your feelings and interactions flow.” “And my internal rebellion, my wounds that, stimulated, move me to anger, impatience, and irritation, depression and sadness, jealousy, unworthiness and despair, what of them?” “I see you in the perfection of this moment, a child in a swirling flow, learning to swim upstream, uncertain of your strength and capability, subject to feeling lost and overwhelmed. As you look upon your own children striving so, do you not love them the more? So look upon yourself with the same eyes.” “But that opposition!” I say. “At work, the boss demands and the co-workers obstruct. At home, the spouse denigrates, and the kids rebel. And for myself, sometimes I just lash out, and sometimes just don’t want to go on. It’s too much.” “Come to Me. Come to Me in nature, the frozen white of the lake, the crisp air, the fresh spring flowers and new grass, the soft breeze of a summer evening, the smell of the fallen leaves on a path. Come to Me. Rejoice in a comfortable bed and a dark, sleeping peace. Find nourishing food for your body, brand new thoughts for your mind, and shared intimacy for your soul. Move smoothly and quickly till your heart pumps, create new ideas by questioning the old, and allow the range of your feelings to stretch till you nearly burst. “I am there, moving within you and around you. Come to Me in the welling of your own soul within you. In the quiet I am there, as you relax and let go. Look for Me in that peace. Ask for Me. Ask again. Find Me in subtle feelings, and I shall become explicit. Find Me where you dare not to look, and I shall become your everyday friend. Find Me in points of light, and I shall become to you a sun. Then shall you clearly shine perfect love upon all that you see.” a Jerry Buchmeier, Ph.D., is a psychotherapist/hypnotherapist and channel practicing in Plymouth, MN. TRANSFORMATION

Your gifts will heal the world by Alan Cohen n a classic scene in The Graduate, young Ben is at his college graduation party when a friend of his parents takes him aside and earnestly whispers, “Plastics.” That industry will be the next rage, the fellow hints, and if Ben is smart he’ll get in on the ground floor. Fast forward to 2012. A young acupuncturist phones my Hay House Radio show, “Get Real,” and confesses her fear that she will not be able to earn enough money to provide for her family, including her little child. I whisper to her, “Transformational Services” and leave a pregnant pause for the message to sink in. I go on to tell the woman that in the years to come we will see increasing change, disorientation and turmoil as many social systems and institutions will likely disintegrate. They will be replaced by new systems rooted in truth, vision and service rather than fear, greed and illusion. As people are pushed out of old comfort zones and lifestyles, they will be hungry for answers, relief and skills to shift into more authentic and rewarding careers, relationships and living situations. At such a time anyone connected to spiritual principles and tools will be in high demand and of great service. If you are a teacher, healer, massage therapist, coach, speaker, minister or counselor offering services to uplift individuals or groups, the universe has a job for you. In the world as we have known it, where many people are clinging to methods and systems based on shallow values and false security, you may not be sought out, acknowledged or paid well for your work. But in the coming epoch in which people need integrity more than hype, they will be happy to pay you to soothe their journey and accelerate their evolution. Until the deeper consciousness is established, faith is required. The old has died away, or is dying, and the new has not yet come to replace it. Imagine you are at a party where you have grown tired, bored or disillusioned with the people and conversations in the room. You step out of the room in search of new friends and peers who match your values and offer stimulating, empowering interactions. In the corridor, you can faintly hear people in another room, but you cannot see them. As you transition between rooms, you may feel alone, insecure or frightened. You might be tempted to turn back — but you couldn’t even if you tried. The genie

is out of the bottle. So you have to just keep moving ahead, trusting that you are on your way to higher ground. The trail will become wider and you will find your “just right” tribe. Regardless of apparent chaos, a grand design is unfolding. Upheaval is the turning over of the ground in preparation for planting new seeds. The winter may have been harsh and cold, but the spring will soften the soil. The ego resists change, because it has a vested interest in maintaining the status quo, even if the status quo is dysfunctional. Yet, the higher mind or inner spirit recognizes that anything taken away is replaced by something greater. As Rabindranath Tagore noted, “Faith is the bird that feels the light and sings when the dawn is still dark.” To clarify your role in the coming world, ask yourself, “Where does my passion call me? How can I serve others in the highest way possible? What tools can I offer that will bring them greater peace and aliveness? Regardless of what I was told about how the world is supposed to work, what do I know, from inside out, about how life really works?” During this crucial shift, we are taking back the power we have vested in external institutions. The only real authority resides in the wisdom and power within you. As you trust your heart and vision more than dogma and dictates, you will have all the guidance you need and the ability to help others access all the guidance they need. In another classic film, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Ferris phones his friend Cameron to ask him if he wants to skip school and go out and play. When Cameron complains that he’s too sick to get out of bed, Ferris tells Cameron that he just can’t think of anything worth getting up for. If the world or your life seems sick or tired, it may be only because we have accepted a world that doesn’t offer us anything to get up for. But if we recognize that something new and wonderful is calling to us, we will find the energy and means to create what we would choose rather than what has been cast upon us. Transformational services. Tools to awaken. Deeper connection and expanded aliveness. The New Plastics. Get in on the ground floor. a Alan Cohen is the author of many popular inspirational books, including the just-released Enough Already: The Power of Radical Contentment. A Holistic Profile Name: Lori Bestler Title: Strategic Mind Coach and Motivational Speaker Location: The Wellness Circle, 7094 Lake Drive, Lino Lakes MN 55014 Phone: 651.260.4540 Email: Lori@mindscapesunlimited.com Website: Mindscapesunlimited.com Describe what you do: I offer a dynamic formula that helps people break through barriers, remove limiting beliefs and deal with habits and behaviors that hold them back from realizing unlimited success and well-being. Frequent problems I help with are: stress and overwhelm, sleep problems, lack of focus and followthrough, procrastination, negative self-talk, low self-confidence and limiting beliefs of all kinds. My Strategic Mind Coaching Program integrates a wide range of philosophies and sciences with aim of helping clients with personal and professional development, emotional healing, behavior change, stress reduction and much more. Many of my clients want more out of life. They crave new knowledge. They’re creative, intuitive or innovative; most are entrepreneurs and ambitious professionals. As a result of my work, I have helped thousands of individuals increase business success, inner well-being and gain control of their lives. What motivates you to do what you do? I want to help those who are stuck where I once was. I label everyone as a miracle, a worthwhile person with a special purpose and ability. I’m not a clinical therapist or a doctor and I do not diagnosis or write prescriptions for medical illnesses. I am a Strategic Mind Coach, and my life experiences and education have affirmed that most people struggle because of “how” they are thinking, their state of self-care for nurturing good health, and experiencing too much stress. As a person who once struggled tremendously, I have gained much experiential knowledge. As a young adult, I struggled with

 Cancer continued from page 12 The voice spoke, I am a healer. Now my conscious mind is saying, “So?!” The vibration of I am a healer welled up and washed over my conscious mind. No lumpectomy, no radiation, no mastectomy, no chemo. My path is the one less traveled. How can I truly be an intuitive healer working alongside the Divine and not embrace the same healing myself? How will I reclaim my body from this pea-size infraction that stealthily took form in my left breast, this tiny tumor poised to wreak havoc

anorexia and bulimia. At the age of 36, I became a dislocated worker in corporate America. I was diagnosed with ADHD. I was a divorced, single parent. And if that wasn’t enough, one night I had a dream and imagined I was dying of breast cancer. Two weeks after my dream, I found a lump in my breast and I was having a biopsy. I fell to my knees and wondered, “Is my body a messenger and trying to tell me something?” or “Is my stinkin’ thinkin’ causing me to become ill?” We have a choice. We can either travel in the dark, doing what we’ve always done, getting the same results. Or we can be courageous and step out of our comfort zone and into the light, taking responsibility for our life. What is new with you in terms of expansion? I’ve moved into a much larger office space and I’m really excited about how attendees with learn, support and energize each other to realize their goals and dreams as a group. I am also promoting two powerful programs: • A group weight loss program, offering 30 minutes of education by different presenters and a 45-minute hypnosis session, takes place from 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday evenings at the Wellness Circle. • A Manifest Abundance program, which once was a six-hour program, is now a two-hour program for one-third of the cost. My goal is to help individuals be abundant in all areas of their lives. The next Manifest Success program will be at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 21 (go to the website under Upcoming Events for details). I am writing a book about how thoughts become the enemy and will teach readers how to move out of the abyss in your mind for achieving greater success and well-being. At my website, I provide detailed information about myself, products and services and how I can help you better your life. I encourage you to join my email list and get a free “Be Energized” audio. a

Jump into Action! Like the March Hare, make that leap this month and jump into action. Get those closets cleaned, those clothes sorted, the cupboards cleared. Jettison the junk; recycle what you don’t want or don’t need and visit Goodwill, give to the Veterans or consign! Stuff that sits carries stagnant energy — so shift it.
