to our readers he time of Harvest causes me to reflect on what our community of Sun Rivers brings to the table of life? How does it nourish us and help us thrive?

What do we each bring to the table of our community? How we nourish and help it thrive as a community is a reflection of its people. Communities thrive when residents are engaged in the dynamic process of giving and receiving and Sun Rivers was recently recognized as one of the top communities in Canada for community engagement, responsibility and pride. This award is a testament to the gifts and skills that Sun Rivers’ residents bring to the power of community. When I look at the reflection that is so very evident in Sun Rivers, I see growth, expansion, diversity and the strong threads of love, caring and community pride. I see people

who enjoy their lives, their families and their homes. I see people who feel safe and engaged. All of our neighborhoods are connected and joined by the beauty of the vibrant greenery of golf and the rugged beauty of our natural landscape; a compelling blend that expresses who we are. Our community is a growing, thriving body of people. It gives gifts of generosity, compassion, hope and financial support to an ever-growing variety of causes that support those in need. We come together as a community in countless ways and contribute our wealth of skills, our passion and whatever extra we may have, because we recognize how truly fortunate we are. The depth of character and generosity our community holds never ceases to inspire me. The door is open, come and join us for golf, dinner or a special place to call home.

ust when you thought you had seen it all, the Sun Rivers Resort Community scores another goal. That goal is in FootGolf, one of the hottest and most amazing sporting trends in the country right now. Sun Rivers General Manager Rob Larocque had been paying close attention to the sport which first emerged in Europe a number of years ago with the idea of importing it to Canada if it proved to be as popular as he had imagined it would be. The sport which essentially marries golf and soccer was a no-brainer for the golf pro. “Soccer is a very big part of our community here in Kamloops and FootGolf is a great way to have a new demographic to experience the atmosphere, lifestyle, service and everything we have to offer here at Sun Rivers,” explains Rob. “It allows players to be able to experience the golf course in a new, fun and easy way with a sport that they are passionate about.” Traditionally golf courses have been off limits to non-golfers. Half the allure of golfing is the sweeping vistas, fresh air, social connections and spectacular landscapes. The emergence of FootGolf allows the non-golfer a chance to get out on the course to experience the magic and the beauty without the need for clubs and a lot of know how. All you need is a pair of running shoes and the ability to kick a ball.

“Sun Rivers has committed to donating $1 from every FootGolf green fee back to the soccer community through the Kamloops Youth Soccer Association.” “Engaging families is very important to us » at Sun Rivers,” continues Rob. “FootGolf is one of the very few sports like golf that family members and groups of all ages and abilities can have fun and play together. We have grandparents, parents, kids, aunts and uncles all coming out and playing together. If your kids play soccer and you are a golfer, it is a great game to find some common ground. If you can kick a ball, you can play.” As well as finding common ground, Rob has found that FootGolf is a natural way to progress into the game of golf. The rules and etiquette of FootGolf and traditional golf are the same, so it is a great way to introduce your children and non-golfing family and friends to the atmosphere of golf. “Soccer coaches love FootGolf as well,” finishes Rob. “This game teaches the skills players need out on the pitch. It teaches you ball control, how to visualize where the ball needs to go, spin, force and control. We have engaged the Kamloops soccer community and they have been very supportive. In return, Sun Rivers has committed to donating $1 from every FootGolf green fee back to the soccer community through the Kamloops Youth Soccer Association.” Sun Rivers is an official accredited FootGolf course with the Canadian FootGolf Association - one of 12 courses across the Nation. If you think you want to give this new sport a try, make your way to Sun Rivers. Tee times are available Thursday thru Monday after 3pm with a 3 day advance booking. Also a great way to fundraise, team build and celebrate, round up your team today and see you on the course! n

hat is one of the best perks of living at Sun Rivers? Active living of course. Sun Rivers is nestled in some of the best views and hiking around. With rolling landscapes, an abundance of wildlife and a world class golf course, you couldn’t ask for a better playground. For a second year, Sun Rivers Resort Community is inviting residents and visitors alike to come and ‘Do the Course’. The event takes place the first Sunday of each November and is open to all walk/run enthusiasts. Your walk or run will take you 5km or 10km around the breathtaking views of the Sun Rivers Golf

Course and throughout the walking trails and neighbourhoods of Sun Rivers. The registration fee is only $30 with proceeds going to support People in Motion, a non-profit organization for people with disabilities. Your reward? A fabulous morning on the course, a run swag bag including a special toque, participation medal, after race refreshments, door prizes and the satisfaction of completing the course. “We had over 100 people participate last year,” explained Brynn Gise, Marketing Manager for Sun Rivers. “We were thanked by many after last year’s event for creating different style of course for a run complete with challenges of the rolling hills and perspective of the golf course.”

Organizers were impressed last year by the camaraderie and support given by participants encouraging other participants to the finish line. Rick Perszon, Irongate resident, was the final participant to cross the line. “It was a new experience for me, I treated it as an enjoyable Sunday walk and completed the 10k route. When I heard the cheers near the finish line I felt rejuvenated.” Rick received a complimentary entry for this year’s event to recognize his perseverance. Whether you prefer to walk or run, this event is for you. 5km and 10km routes include Sun Rivers walking trails and golf course paths – a terrain yet to be discovered by non-golfers.” Sign up for ‘Do the Course’ on sunrivers.com n

Communityconnectivity N

o community is complete without a home base to call its own. This is why Sun Rivers launched their special resident portal, MySunRivers.com along with a variety of other tools aimed at keeping information channels open between residents and the community as a whole. So much more than just a website, MySunRivers. com helps residents to stay updated on urgent notices, community meetings, events, special offers and so much more. “MySunRivers.com along with the brand new Corix Sun Rivers resident webpage allows us to talk directly to Sun Rivers’ residents in real time,” explains Brynn Gise, Marketing Manager at Sun Rivers. “We have also launched a brand new e-news service which allows us to get pertinent information out fast. These tools have allowed us to increase the speed of communications between us and our residents which can be very useful in the event of an alert or emergency.” In addition, the program offers the ability to conduct online RSVP’s to community events and collects survey responses assisting in gathering lifestyle satisfaction levels at Sun Rivers, pertinent information when planning for future development. The MySunRivers.com web portal has an abundance of Sun Rivers information on community, dining, golf, real estate and even classifieds. You can learn about upcoming community information sessions, a special event on the horizon, who to call in an emergency, when your neighbourhood Annual General Meeting is, what specials are running in the restaurant

or golf course, if that house you have had your eye on is coming up for sale and even where to get an awesome outdoor fountain that your neighbour has no room for. The site also contains useful information for residents on everything from lawn care to recycling, resident walking trails and how to deal with nuisance dandelions. The major utility provider, Corix has also stepped up to the electronic plate and has a full service Sun Rivers resident webpage at www.corix. com/sun-rivers-resort/. Corix, who is the major provider of water sewer, municipal and energy services wants to make it easier to access information and tips. Here you can report an emergency, view your bill and learn how to conserve energy to not only help the environment but save money. “We are working hard to maintain high level communications in Sun Rivers,” finishes Brynn. “We want Sun Rivers residents to have the information they need, when they need it.” You can find My Sun Rivers at mysunrivers.com and the Corix Sun Rivers resident portal at http://www.corix.com/sunrivers-resort/ n  sunrivers.com 13

or the past six years Sun Rivers has entered Communities in Bloom (CiB), a national civic challenge to promote green spaces and civic pride in community settings. CiB acknowledge environments where spirit thrives along with the social fabric of the community. “The sense of belonging and participation in community events has strengthened as the community has evolved. Sun Rivers has benefitted immensely by embracing the CiB principles. Sun Rivers is all about building community.” says Leslie Brochu, VP of Marketing and Public Relations. In 2012 and 2013, Sun Rivers successfully achieved 5 blooms at the National level demonstrating an awareness of what makes a community beautiful. The development continues to promote responsible and respectful societal values and principles to help create healthier and safer communities and each year big ideas have added up to big changes. This year Sun Rivers Resort Community ranked top spot in the country and received the coveted 5 Bloom Award in their population category plus 14  Thrive Fall 2014

a special mention for Edible Gardening at the National conference in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island held in September. Headed by the Community Administrator Karri Loadman, and Community CiB Chairperson Viki Bentley, the community has been actively pursuing the CiB principles. “What a tremendous honour to go up against some of the finest communities in Canada and to come out at the top”, says Karri Loadman - Community Administrator at Sun Rivers. In July, 2013, trained volunteer judges travelled to participating communities to evaluate for the competition. They gave special mention to Sun Rivers for Edible Gardening, recognizing the 50 plot Community Garden, a project that came to life three years ago. Judges Lorna McIlroy and Ted Zarudny wrote, “The Sun Rivers Resort Community, planned to balance social, environmental and economic imperatives, endeavors to be a responsible steward of the land. In the past two years, this community has embraced Edible Gardening. The program started modestly with a 20 plot fenced area. This original area has grown over

the past year to 55 very well used plots, fruit trees, berry bushes and compost bins. Plots have been graciously supplied for Hospice and Food Bank consumption. This year, the developer for a new subdivision has added a very well landscaped 15 plot neighbourhood garden for the residents. In addition to the community garden plots, many Sun Rivers residents have built their own backyard and container edible gardens”. The 2015 Communities in Bloom National Symposium will be held in Kamloops to welcome competitors from across the country. “We look forward to showcasing the hard work we are doing at Sun Rivers and to celebrate in the success of creating a connected community where residents experience pride in their neighbourhood, social connection, wellness, safety and security.” Brochu finishes. Sun Rivers continues to break ground with initiatives that provide significant benefits to the community. A heightened sense of pride following recognition for their accomplishments can be shared by the entire community and will grow new ideas for future endeavours. n

ecognition is made of the creative ideas in landscaping including the efforts of the community gardeners. In 2014, the Sun Rivers in Bloom committee and residents are nominating homes that exhibit the highest standards of the CiB program categories - tidiness, environmental action, urban forestry, landscape, floral and natural and cultural heritage activities Does your neighbour have fantastic landscaping? Or amazing flower pots? Does your garden plot neighbour do a great job? Nominate a neighbour for their gardening achievements to be recognized - an initiative from your Communities in Bloom committee. To show recognition the Sun Rivers in Bloom team has created recognition signs boasting a sunflower, the official Sun Rivers flower. Discover the world of wine at Hoodoos by Cristina Ostapovitch

T

here are few things in life that people are willing to join. There are gym memberships, book clubs, and who can forget the dreaded jam of the month club. There is one club that is never met with groans and eye rolls. In fact, Hoodoos of Sun Rivers has implemented a club that patrons are lining up for – the ever-popular Wine Club. Last year, Hoodoos was extremely fortunate to have a Level 3 WSET certified sommelier join their team. Originally from Australia, wine expert Leon Eckersley’s passion for wine is infectious. It was through his love of food and wine that the Wine Club was born. A yearly membership provides you with a complimentary wine accessory gift, exclusive wine tours, dinners hosted by Hoodoos plus free tastings at 24 local wineries. It also gives you access to a monthly e-newsletter highlighting events and topics of interest written by the sommelier himself. Eckersley’s wealth of knowledge allows for great interactions with its members. One of the sections entitled Sommelier Savvy, allows Eckersley to address questions he is asked by budding wine connoisseurs. Some topics covered thus far include decanting, matching food and information on wine’s ability to age. The wine of the month preps your palate for carefully selected feature wines. For those who have never been to a Wine Club dinner, the experience is nothing short of decadent and members are given the opportunity to experiment with flavour and sample an array of unique wines. Once a month club mem-

a clubhouse, it is a dining destination. Whether you’re looking for a bite to eat after a round on the course, a business meeting, casual date with friends or

bers have the opportunity to attend an exclusive wine dinner or a small table tasting where a selection of amuse bouche prepared by Executive Chef Darren Bezanson is perfectly paired with a variety of wines. Select vineyards are invited to host such evenings and magically paired food courses heighten the education experience. The passion for what they do is evident. Impromptu tastings allow members to try select pours usually not offered by the glass. Thanks to the Wine Club, gone are the days a celebratory event, Hoodoos is the place to go. Offering a wide variety of menu options including gluten free, there truly is a favourite dish for everyone.

All guests are welcome to dine with us at Hoodoos where our kitchen is your kitchen. Open 7 days a week, reservations are recommended 250.828.9404.

The wine club has given people whose paths might not otherwise cross the opportunity to mingle and communicate about a mutual passion.

Outdoor living

If you could go anywhere in the world to feel comfortable and really alive, where would it be? Chances are this vision is somewhere outdoors that inspires a connection with the natural world. Design has the potential to establish a sense of well-being. One

by jody tippett

of the most important features of a Sun Rivers home is the ability to customize designs for the comfort and pleasure of the dweller. One can imagine gazing out into the beauty of an inviting outdoor space as a cool breeze blows a window treatment.

Town & Country Luxury Fireplaces, TC42 Outdoor Fireplace, The Fireplace Centre.

selling Tips with sun rivers realty Keep it Cozy With cooler weather, home buyers naturally want to get cozy. Before showing your home, fill your home with pleasing aromas of the season by burning a cinnamon-scented candle or by doing some baking. Make sure it’s warm in your house, you don’t want buyers leaving early because they’re too cold. Make Your Home Move in Ready Buyers are a bit less interested in doing work in the fall than the spring. If the home needs new carpet, put it in. If rooms need a fresh paint job, get them painted. When buyers view your home they are already trying to imagine living there, they don’t want to think about the costs and time involved. Plant Some Instant Color Seasonal color makes the landscape pop and flats of annuals are also relatively inexpensive. Go for a splash of several colors or a more monochromatic scheme, whatever fits in with the look of your home. Touch Up the Mulch Nothing spruces up a place like a new application of mulch, so apply a fresh layer in all your garden beds. The color enhances the contrast of the surrounding plants and makes everything more vibrant. What’s more, mulch is relatively cheap and easy to apply. Wash windows inside and out Sparkle is free, and sparkle sells homes! A potential buyer may not realize why your home seems so inviting but will feel drawn to it if the windows are spotless and reflect sunlight.

Choosing Current Paint Colors A fresh, crisp paint job in modern neutrals like gray and putty shows off your home to the best advantage. Don’t feel you have to avoid all color; just be aware that the bolder your choice, the more likely it is that it won’t agree with someone. An overly bright or badly chipped exterior paint color may need refreshing too, so don’t stop with the interior. Rake the yard & trim back bushes Clean out dead leaves and debris on your lawn. Trim overgrown vegetation blocking the windows or path to the entrance. Cutting back bushes and tree limbs will let the sun inside and showcase the exterior of your home. Transplant tulips and daffodils or buy flowers in containers Did you know that yellow flowers stimulate buying urges? After a long winter, everyone is anxious to see the first signs of spring. Yellow tulips and daffodils induce a feeling of happiness and contentment. Arrange containers in groups of three or five near the entrance.

PROUD to be DESIGNING for SUN RIVERS Bergman Home Design is the exclusive designer for Sun Rivers Adult Communities, including Sagewood, Rosewood, Stoneridge, The Pointe and Irongate. Certified in residential design, they offer free consultation, stock plans and custom design.

The architecture of a Sun Rivers home includes features of various types, such as decks and pergolas that reach out into the landscape and create a connection to the outdoors. Points of entry and windows provide a vista of the rugged landscape and also frame overt interior views from outside. An outdoor area provides a place to sit and enjoy the desert surroundings and for many it becomes an extension of their home as a spot to entertain. With this in mind, an important lesson is the need for a plan in the initial phase of design. Working with an Interior Designer simplifies the intended interaction of tying the house and landscape into a beautiful picture for the owners. Award winning Interior Designer Lenna Sawyer has been with Sun Rivers since 2000. Access to Lenna’s extensive expertise is available to every homeowner as a part of their building contract. Her insight and assistance with the decision-making details during the design process ensures homeowners individualities and ideals come to life easily and on budget. Thinking of the property in its entirety from the beginning stages instills organic flow, both inside and out, not to mention avoiding costly modifications later. “At Sun Rivers we really focus on outdoor living,” notes Lenna. “Our clients are attuned to the outdoors and all aspects of the house design are conducive to outdoor living. There is a flow in the transition from living space inside to outside.” Some design elements are determined by the neighbourhood master plan and consistent with each home, such as the range of colour palettes, hardy plank siding and applications of low-level exterior lighting. “Anything out of the ordinary requires the plan be customized,” informs Lenna. Additional service requirements, such as gas and electricity, are better planned before the building stage. The homeowner can customize and furnish their outdoor spaces depending on how they like to entertain and according to their budget. Selection of furnishings can make a difference in how the outdoor space is used. “Some homeowners prefer a more formal outdoor seating arrangement with dining table and chairs while other clients may choose sofa seating which tends to provide a more casual dining atmosphere,” remarks Lenna. Other outdoor elements such as lighting, area carpets, ornamental plants and flowers are selected for ambience and according to individual taste. Elements and materials from indoors can be replicated outside to blur the lines between the two areas. Treating the outdoor space like another room and implementing a concept of continuity, both visually and spatially, brings theses two worlds together. The property as a whole becomes a pleasurable place to quietly reflect and take in the view or to host a lively gathering. n
