EX-MINERS DEMAND COMPENSATION n March to labour office highlights grievances BY ERIC GYIMAH About 250 ex-miners besieged the East London offices of the Department of Labour on Friday demanding long-standing pensions amongst other demands. According to the President of the Ex-Miners Union, Mr Zola Mazinyana, who led the march exminers, wanted to their plights, and that of their families heard. They handed over a memorandum with the list of demands to department’s representative Mr Bheki Gama. Key to their demands is the payment of monies still due

to Marikana killed miners, as well as the financing of their children’s education. They would also like information on the pension fund, which they believe will operate from January 2015, and the Commission of Enquiry, which is supposed to investigate the mining industry. The marchers demanded special bursaries and pensions for all those who left the mines due to retirement. “The government must serve the interests of the poor,” said Mr Mazinyana. They also want a special grant paid to them. Some of the ex-miners who invested money feel that their funds were misused,

and they complained that their investments were not paying dividends. Others claimed money due to spouses were not paid out in full. “We want our parents’ money; we are hungry” said Ms Nosipho Nthuku, whose late father was a miner. Mr Mazinyana stipulated that if the Department of Labour did not respond to these issues within 21 days, then the ex-mine workers will march to Johannesburg. If they don't get any attention in Johannesburg, then they will march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria insisted Mr Mazinyana. email: reporter1@ectoday.co.za

MTHATHA TO HOST ARTS SUMMIT n Culture market economy encouraged BY ZANOXOLO KA MENZIWA A special Delphic Summit, on Arts and Culture, taking place in Mthatha, from 24 to 25 July, will reflect on the 20th anniversary celebrations of the International Delphic Council (IDC) and explore the significance of the first-of-its-kind African Delphiad, to be held later in the year in South Africa,

which will have a worldwide component. The summit comes at a time when the country is ushering 20 years of freedom and democracy. Speaking in East London ahead of the summit, Mr Christian Kirsch founder and Secretary General of International Delphic Council (IDC) encouraged locals to move towards “a Culture Market Economy”,

where people are showing creativity in all aspects of life. Mr Kirsch also took the opportunity to announce that the African Delphiad will take place in Durban in November 2014. The summit is hosted by the National Delphic Council of South Africa (NDCSA) & African Delphic Council (ADC). Zolani Mkiva, poet laureate, is the Chairman of the NDCSA and has devoted his time to the promotion of the games. The African Delphiad is a positive step towards placing South Africa at the crossroads of continental arts and culture. “This move will bring about amazing influence” explained Mr Kirsch who went on to encourage locals to be always curious. The purpose of the Delphic Games is to advance the arts through competition, highlight human creativity, and foster the understanding and respect of other cultures. Mr Kirsch pointed out that the worldwide offices of the organisation will move to India “because it is important to adopt knowledge from other countries.” He also went on to discourage locals from modelling their way of life around “Western Values” or else our culture will wither away.

The Delphic Games, dubbed the sister of the Olympic Games, was started in Greece centuries ago but the modern version was launched in 1994, in Berlin, Germany championed by Mr Kirsch. The games will cover six categories, contemporary, popular, and classictraditional aspects of each discipline. “The six categories reflected a 360 degrees way of doing things” added Mr Kirsch. With a history reaching as far back as 2 500 years, the modern-era Delphic Games are comprised of six categories: music and acoustic arts, performing arts, crafts designs and visual arts, lingual arts, communication and social arts, and architectural and ecological arts. Within these categories there are 18 disciplines that artists can compete in. Cultural activists are expected to produce a charter and declarations of the summit with a view to fashion a renewed vision of arts and culture. Mr Mkiva, who is heading the Local Organising Committee of the Delphic games is elated that “as products of this summit, we will have a charter and broad declarations to help guide our work.”

A company contracted by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality for three years, faces the daunting task of reducing revenue losses through theft of electricity by R50 million annually for the duration of their contract. The company, AMAT, with former Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor, Nceba Faku as director of Special Projects, has been appointed by the municipality as a service provider to develop strategies to curb the theft of electricity from the metro’s electricity network. The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality lost approximately R200 million in the last financial year due to electricity theft. “The challenge facing us will require many tough and unpopular decisions to be made. The ability to take these decisions while retaining broad support across all our communities and sectors will only be possible if the leadership and administration have the necessary confidence and trust of communities.

“This is a task that can only be achieved by the leadership and community with the will to succeed. Our role as local government, together with AMAT will be multifaceted and key in ensuring that we meet the challenges, address disparities, unify our communities and assist in the NMBM service delivery and developmental mandate. “Given the AMAT terms of reference, I am convinced that their invaluable contribution will serve this metro, as expected, in an efficient, effective and sustainable way,” said Executive Mayor Benson Fihla. Mr Faku said they accepted the challenge, the electricity theft is not confined to previously disadvantaged areas as more sophisticated devices are used to steal electricity in suburbs. “An audit will be done across the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipal area to determine thefts in all areas as we are aware that people are making money by installing gadgets to steal electricity. We are coming for them and will expose them,” said Mr Faku.

REMEMBER WORLD HEPATITIS DAY The 28th of July will be marked as World Hepatitis Day. Hepatitis is a disease caused by the inflammation of the liver. This day will be used to increase awareness, to call for access to treatment and provide a better understanding of the disease, especially for those who live with infected people. There are five main types of Hepatitis, which are caused by the viruses A, B, C, D and E. These viruses can be spread from one individual to another and they are not related to each other. Hepatitis B is the most common virus in South African children that transmitted through adults as they are the carriers. Hepatitis B is highly infectious and is mostly spread by close contact with an infected person through the exchange of blood from cuts or tiny grazes, sharing of a toothbrush, razor, sex and direct contact with bleeding wounds. The symptoms one can look out for are vomiting that lasts longer than six hours, unusual bleeding and bruising, confusion, extreme drowsiness and jaundice that continues for longer than three weeks. It is important that one visits a doctor once they notice some of these symptoms so that you can be treated in time and determine which type of Hepatitis you have. Hepatitis can be prevented by vaccination, practicing safe sex, avoid sharing of razors, earrings, toothbrushes and any other sharp objects. This is a silent disease that still remains largely ignored. Early detection and treatment is very important for those who are infected. We need to support the awareness campaigns towards health education. It is our responsibility to make sure that we talk about it. Prevention is better than cure, let’s work together and support this day by going out there and getting tested. EXPENSIVE LOANS ARE KILLING SOUTH AFRICANS

Official statistics note that South African household borrowings have declined slightly. However, we remain a nation wallowing in debt. And this applies from the government down to the humblest of families. Along with the steady increase in the cost of living, this is a major reason for prolonged and bitter strikes and for ongoing social instability. Admittedly, we are not alone in facing a heavy debt burden: many countries face similar or, on the face of it, worse situations. But, because of our recent history and the heightened — and now largely frustrated — expectations of the 1994 transition, the level of desperation and anger among the relatively impoverished majority is understandable. As we are regularly reminded, we have, certainly one of the worst discrepancies between rich and poor anywhere in the world. At the same time, a number of corporations and companies continue to reward their directors and chief executives with pay packets that are justifiably regarded as obscene.

It is therefore, understandable that such factors result in anger and bitterness among low-paid workers and the unemployed. And there is every indication that things are getting worse. The collapse in the exchange rate value of the rand, for example, is already being felt in the rise in fuel prices that will have a knock-on effect throughout the economy. If history is anything to go by, this situation will again see the country moving toward a period of higher interest rates. And this will almost certainly force more citizens into the ranks of the ten million who already have what are politely referred to as “impaired credit records." It is not as if there is anything new in this situation. A decade ago, with concern being expressed that the poor were carrying a disproportionate debt burden, the government started debating the National Credit Act (NCA) that came into force seven years ago. It is a good example of how actions based on the best of intentions can backfire. In the first place, the NCA made it more difficult for lower paid workers to access credit. The legislation also restricted the rate of interest that may be levied on “micro loans” (those under

R8000) to 5 per month a month. But this is equal to 60 percent a year — and does not take account of administrative fees and other legal “add-ons." To ensure payment, some lenders have also demanded and been given the right to have debt repayments made directly from an employee’s wages. Many of these “garnishee orders” have been shown to be illegal, both in terms of not having been approved the courts and to have included interest payments beyond the NCA limits. Once again it is the army of the working poor who are the main sufferers and, as was recently revealed, many of them are miners. But it is not only a lack of financial education that leads workers into signing away more than they legally should; desperation is more than sufficient reason. However, there are millions of South Africans who cannot — or do not know how to — access already exorbitantly priced loans from legitimate sources. Their only recourse is to the mashonisas, the township loan sharks whose interest rates and methods of debt collection can only be described as brutal. Because many workers often require relatively small loans for short periods, employees in a few workplaces have operated on the stokvel principle, putting money into a common “pot” that can be drawn on by those in need of a

loan until payday. It is a practice the unions could have adopted, but never did, so opening the door to “payday lenders” such as British-based Wonga. Wonga adheres to the NCA, providing loans of up to R2 500 for 30 days or less. But a R2 500 loan over 30 days costs R541.96. Because administrative and other fees added to the legal 60 per annum, interest rate remain the same no matter the size or term of the loan, a lesser amount over shorter period results in much higher repayments. For example, to settle a R100 loan over seven days costs R176.10. There is obviously great demand for payday loans, and Wonga is extremely profitable. Here is a clear lesson for the labour movement: Surely huge investment funds would be better, profitably and used in providing reasonably priced loans to members rather than using investment companies that, to use union terminology, rely on the exploitation of other workers. CIRCUMCISION EXPULSION

As Congress of South African Students, we are expressing our disappointment coupled with sadness and anger by the manner in which King's College in East London is operating and treating our brothers and sisters. A pupil has been expelled for undergoing traditional circumcision; his parents were told that it is against the school's code of conduct. As Congress of South African Students in the province, we have noted that it is not the first time the college has been operated like a spaza shop or a farm. According to the South Africa Schools Act (SASA) section 9 suspension and expulsion '' the governing body may, on reason-

able grounds and a precautionary measure suspend a learner who is suspected of serious misconduct from attending school, but may only enforce such suspension after the learner has been granted a reasonable opportunity to make representations to it in relation to such suspension'', the South African Schools Act states clearly again on the Private Schools that they comply with any other conditions set by government.'' Therefore, as COSAS we strongly believe that the South African Schools Act is one of the conditions set by government, therefore, all Private schools must comply with it. As Congress of South African Students

Eastern Cape, we call upon the Department of Education to resolve this issue in working together with the school management. This pupil must return to school by the end of this week, if such does not happen, it must be noted that we're young people and we're capable of anything; we will mobilise and make the life of whoever is responsible miserable, as we believe that an injury to one is an injury to all. Z.F. Dyantyi Provincial Coordinator Cosas

FACE UP TO “SEX FOR JOBS SCANDAL"

I'm joining hands with NEHAWU in calling our ANC Chairperson and Premier Phumulo Masualle to review this sex-forjobs scandal investigation team. I too don’t endorse or trust this team because it is lead by heads of the same department. My Premier must appoint outside people and involve Nehawu in the process, including certain members from the Alliance partners. No time to play. This sex for jobs issue is not a joke as is traumatising many people, killing marriages and undermining our tradition. Bhisho is rotten to the core and needs no mercy. Nepotism, corruption and this sex for jobs scandals are not to be taken for granted. Premier Masualle

is equal to the task but has been advised wrongly this time, indeed misled. The Premier must review this commission. About Buffalo City- we are happy that the sober ANC at Calata House referred the Mandela funeral saga issue to the National Integrity Committee headed by a tried and tested stalwarts, the likes of Andrew Mlangeni, Frene Ginwala, Mendi Msimang. The ANC is really serious in addressing proper corruption. Let the people of Buffalo City wait for internal processes as well as court processes. No one is guilty in regard, and we fully support the comrades implicated up until processes has unfolded.

Ours as members of the ANC is to be vigilant and to collectively defend the integrity of this glorious movement by naming and shaming those who are corrupt and are accumulating wealth under ANC banner and killing our organisation. Sellouts and puppets including “sex-forjobs kings” have no room in this country. As we celebrate Mandela, Tambo, Sisulu, Luthuli and many legacy-We must jealous defend this organization with no fear or favour. Viwe Sidali ANC BEC Member & Head of Political Education cluster, Duncan Village.

WOMEN TAKE A LEAD FROM NELSON

n Mayors take to the streets BY LUXOLO TWANI The University of Fort Hare together with the Department of Public Enterprise (DPE) and the Provincial Department of Sport Recreation Arts and Culture (DSRAC) observed Mandela Day in Alice last week. The Deputy Minister of DPE Mr Bulelani Magwanishe, MEC of DSRAC Ms Pemmy Majodina, Vice Chancellor of UFH Dr Mvuyo Tom were the delegates leading the cleaning on one of the countries early intellectuals Mr Z. The maxim “educate a woman, and you educate a nation” once more proved to be true as women in leadership extended the memory of Nelson Mandela beyond politics but into the hearts of the needy and desolate. Both Emalahleni Mayor, Nomveliso Nyhukwana and Lukhanji Mayor, Nozibele Makanda took to the streets of their respective administrative areas not just to sweep the streets but also to restore human dignity to those who have been condemned to misery by poverty and hunger. In both occasions, the Mandela Day was remembered in an integrated fashion as even stakeholders outside the municipal spectrum were involved. In Emalahleni, the laid back Indwe town received spring cleaning but according to Mayor Ms Nomveliso Nyhukwana, the memory of Madiba was also meant to leave

a lasting legacy to the downtrodden. “To maintain the cleanliness we will employ six people for twelve months and one person on each ward will be employed to work here for six months on an Extended Public Works Programme fashion. “Hawker stalls and streetlights will be erected here and that will create job opportunities and ensure safety at night. Twenty people will get jobs on the paving project that will commence soon to beautify our town, paving blocks have been delivered. Trees will be planted; Nelson Mandela played his role now it is our time to take South Africa forward," said Ms Nyhukwana with enthusiasm. A fully furnished four-roomed house complete with groceries was also handed over to Mrs Nofezile Bakana at Cacadu Village in Lady Frere. Lukhanji Mayor Nozibele Makanda was hands on in the sprucing up of Ikhwezi Primary School in Mlungisi Township, and a house that was accidentally burnt down in Ezibeleni was completely refurbished. All the dumping sites were manually cleaned up by the mayor and her entourage. The elderly were treated with warm meals in Tambo Village. Like all politicians who come from Lukhanji, Ms Makanda hoped the day will help heal the political scars caused by disunity and factionalism. “He was a leading figure for reconciliation and as we remember uTata we must strive to stop fighting against one another and be united in delivering services to the people. His memory will hopefully help us find one another as we bring services to the people," she said. It remains to be seen how the memory of the great liberator will extend to the ordinary folk as those who mainly participate in the cleaning up and services those who are already employed, and the majority went about with their daily chores. email: ltwani@gmail.com

Duncan Heuer, the victims’ legal representative, calls a Ponzi Scheme. It is understood that Absa, Standard Bank and Nedbank all facilitated the loans behind Satinsky car deals, with WesBank avoiding the process from the start. Mr Heuer, on behalf of the clients, is lodging an application to have the “R699 per month” vehicle owners certified as a class, with a view to bring a class action against Satinsky and the banks involved. The Port Elizabeth High Court was supposed to commence the trial on Tuesday, but the case has since been

postponed to the 7th of August after the respondents, The Satinsky Group and the banks opposed the application by Mr Heuer to certify the matter as a class action.Mr Heuer said that consumers will have to decide whether to keep their vehicles and opt out of the class action if it is approved, or opt in to the class action with a high likelihood that the vehicles will be returned to the bank. “It’s important that consumers understand that the banks are the legal owners of these cars, which means it’s not likely that vehicle owners will receive all their monthly installments back if the action is successful. A more likely scenario is that the vehicles will be returned to banks and any outstanding debt written off”, said Mr Heuer. Last month, Satinsky announced the R699 per

month car deal collapsed because Blue Lake (Pty) Ltd, a Hong Kong based company which it partnered with pulled out of the deal. Thousands of consumers have been left stranded after Satinsky abruptly terminated their popular 'R699' car deal. Satinsky spokesman Mr Siyanda Zulu said. “At this stage we are engaging with all stakeholders and clients. As a result, we reserve our right to comment at a later stage. The banks which financed the scheme have since distanced themselves from Satinsky. Absa came out strongly against Satinsky, saying that it had terminated its relationship with the company, while Standard Bank distanced itself from the controversy. Nedbank has yet to issue a response. email: reporter2@ectoday.co.za

n It will be a joyous celebration BY SISONKE LABASE

It is none other than this country’s gospel powerhouse, MTN Joyous Celebration. The group is headed our way with the ‘One Purpose Tour’ set to hit Port Elizabeth (PE) on the 1st and 2nd of August at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), Indoor Sports Centre, Missionvale Campus. MTN Joyous Celebration is currently on their 18th album, and without any fail, at stores they’re flying off the shelves. Speaking with Pastor Jabu Hlongwane, who is the co-founder of the multi award winning gospel giant on their success and the upcoming PE show. “We were there last year and the year before and PE is always part of the cities we tour. This tour is all about togetherness and emphasis is on team work and you will see a lot of collaborations,” says Pastor Hlongwane. The “One Purpose Tour “performance has been sold out at all venues and I am sure PE will be no different as the Joyous choir is set to amaze their fans. “People can expect new things all together, we want to praise God and worship, we want people to leave tired in

a good way, blessed and healed,” he says. MTN Joyous Celebration has a winning formula and has stolen South African hearts for two decades now. Pastor Hlongwane told us if it wasn’t for the great working relationship he has with Lindelani Mkhize and Mthunzi Namba, Joyous celebration wouldn’t have been where it is today. Our hard work and efforts with everyone who is part of the team has helped a lot, and our fans keep us going. We always perform like it is our last; that is our motto “go big or go home,” he added. MTN Joyous Celebration might seem like an effortless ensemble, but much goes on behind the scenes to create the beautiful sound and spirit that has captured the hearts of thousands of audiences. The group has been the creator of many great vocalists in this country, like Sharon Dee, Swazi Dlamini, Thabo Mdluli and Ntokozo Mbambo. It’s time for our Port Elizabeth readers to win! Jazz lovers are in for a treat. The renowned Jazz maestro is coming to East London on a "BRASSKAP Volume.2" National Tour. McCoy Mrubata is no stranger to the scene, with 25 years experience in the Mzansi music industry. He is an award-winning musician, with his latest 11th solo jazz album titled ‘BRASSKAP Volume.2’ which was released on the 6th of June 2014. He is set to fill the ECAVC Auditorium (Miriam Makeba Centre in East London) with his African Jazz sounds on Saturday, the 2nd of August at 7 pm; tickets are available for R50 at the door. McCoy is very excited about coming home. “I feel great about the show because I know I have a huge following and I look forward to being in East London because it’s coming back to my roots. he hasn’t been in the industry for two decades, which is very refreshing. “It is always exciting to bring out a new album, as an artist you dream these songs and compositions and you get sick if you don’t answer your calling. We are fortunate to be able to share our talent and dreams with people,” says McCoy. McCoy worked with Luyanda Madope, who is also his long time pianist and his producer on ‘BRASSKAP Volume. 2. “I worked with Luyanda; he is a young guy and he did a good job bringing a new feel and fresh sound, but I stayed true to the McCoy Mrubata sound with lots of wind instruments still and not abandoning my older crowd,” says McCoy. ‘BRASSKAP Volume. 2’ is a mixture of McCoy's signature African influences, but with a youthful element to keep up with the times. 'NTSANE' BOYS ARE WORLD CHAMPS BY DEREK HINDMAN

East London fight fans dined out on “fine boxing fare” at the International Convention Centre in East London last Friday when they witnessed four-world title fights take place on a five-fight card. The evening was hosted by Xaba Promotions in recognition of Nelson Mandela Day. The standard of boxing served would have no doubt pleased former President Mandela if he were still with us. For good measure, three Mdantsane born fighters, Lusanda “The Mexican” Komanisi, Lwandile “Angel” Sityatha and Zolani Marali all went home with world title belts. The most enthralling bout of the evening proved to be between popular Mdantsane protagonists, Mcbute “Macman” Sinyabi and Lusanda “The Mexican” Komanisi for the vacant IBO Featherweight World Title. Sparks were sent flying and “Macman” fans went home crying when Komanisi delivered the knockout blow in the fifth round of a pulsating contest. Both fighters had at least 200 ardent fans at the event. Komanisi’s fans have definitely

remained loyal to their man, who is based in Johannesburg where he fights from the (take no prisoners) Nick Durandt stable. Sinyabi’s fans might have believed that their man had a chance of winning this “Battle In Buffalo City”, until the end of the third round, as their man managed to dance around and under Komanisi’s snappy left jab. He frustrated his focused opponent by landing a few punches himself. Towards the end of round four, Komanisi landed a blow that visibly shook Sinyabi for just a second or two but he quickly regained his composure. As the bell rang for round five, it was clear that Komanisi had smelt blood and a big left hook sent Sinyabi crashing to the canvas. Almost unbelievably, Sinyabi beat the count and referee Andile Matika gave the still clearly dazed Sinyabi the signal to “box on.” Komanisi crashed into Sinyabi again, and it took another three big punches before Sinyabi was put to sleep. Medics rushed into the ring, but thankfully Sinyabi was on his feet again after about five minutes. Durandt said that he was happy the referee never stopped the fight after Sinyabi took the count. “Look, any boxer fighting for a

world title deserves to have a full go at it. From our side we are happy that Macman had that chance. A decisive win like this cuts out any arguments about who would have won if the referee had not stopped the fight”. Dowi Mzini, who is Sinyabi's trainer, had this to say. “We worked very hard for this fight. I thought everything was going to plan. Mcbute was caught with that one big punch that put him down for the count. I am also happy with the referee’s decision to let him box on. We will start training for Macman’s last Professional Boxing League fight which will happen sometime in August. He can win his division and the prize of R250 000. Who knows, he might even win the R1 million for scoring the most points,” Mzini said. Durandt praised his fighter. “I think Lusanda will be a world champ for a long time. Right now I hope to line up an overseas opponent for his first-title defence,” he added. All other world title fights of the evening went the full distance and were decided on points over 12 rounds.

n Mandela Day boxing bonanza a big hit

CONFIDENT FANS Mdantsane boxing fans Ovayo Nkopane left, Simthandile Fulani and Sbonda Matyaleni were convinced that their boxing heroes, Lusanda “The Mexican” Komanisi and Lwandile “Angel” Sityatha, would be crowned as World Champions at the International Convention Centre last Friday night. The three men were not disappointed as Komanisi and Sityatha both recorded emphatic wins. Picture by Derek Hindman

EP THE KINGS AT CRAVEN WEEK BY SHAWN BELLUIGI

Eastern Province emerged as the unofficial U18 Coca-Cola Craven Week champions for 2014 after beating SWD 25-7 in the final game of the week at HTS Middelburg last Saturday. Tradition demands that there is no real winner of the Craven Week, the honour of playing in the final game on the main field on the last day is supposed to go to the two teams that played the most attractive rugby in the first four days. There's no doubt that, on that basis, EP are worthy unofficial champions. They scored some spectacular tries and, in the process beat the Blue Bulls, Free State and SWD, three teams that have dominated the week through the years. The Border U 18 team also gave a good account of themselves by beating Griquas 55-26 and Limpopo Blue Bulls 78-17. Border were beaten 47-20 by the Griffons, who were unbeaten at the tournament. In the final game against SWD, Eastern Province scored three good tries, two of them in the first half, and they led 20-0 at half-time. They could only add

email: sport@ectoday.co.za

one second-half try, but SWD were well beaten by then. EP has played in several finals in recent years, but this is the first time they have won it since 1977, when they beat Western Province. In 1994, they drew with Border in the last game of the week. Athenkos Mayinje, Johan Van Niekerk and Stephanus Niewwoudt scored tries for Eastern Province and Curwin Bosch kicked two penalties and two conversions. The SWD try was scored by Dominic Smith and converted by JT Thomas. When the fixtures for the final day were announced, no one was surprised to see the honour going to those two teams. SWD earned the right with their shock defeat of the favourites; Western Province on Wednesday and Eastern Province went through after beating Free State 19-5 in Thursday's late game. The Eastern Province side has a backline jam-packed with exciting runners, and they made full use of the chances that came their way against Free State in the first half, scoring three tries without reply, and the game was virtually over at that stage.

FIGHTERS DO IT FOR NELSON

LEGENDS MARATHON

n Local hero down to run it again

FLAT OUT Luxolo Ndlazi, events and hospitality manager left, New York Marathon Third place finalist Lusapho April, Alex Kambule of Real Gijimas Athletics Club, Meta Scott, Race organiser and Luthando Bara, race founder , were on hand to officially launch the second Legends Marathon Race Day in East London last Wednesday. Picture by Derek Hindman

BY DEREK HINDMAN Lusapho April will be running in this year’s Legends Marathon which will be held in Buffalo City on Sunday, 5 October. Mr April, who finished third in the famous New York Marathon in November last year, used the inaugural Legends Half Marathon (21km) race (where he finished second) as part of his preparation for the New York event. “It all worked out well for me last year so I will follow the same schedule this year. I am waiting for an invitation to the 2014 New York Marathon and in the meantime I have entered the Legends race,” said April. It was announced on Wednesday that the second Legends Marathon will be bigger and betterand runners can enter the race from today. The event will be staged under the banner of the Real Gijimas Athletics Club, which has been at the forefront of athletics for a number of years. Runners who enter before the end of August will qualify for the“Early Bird” special entry fee of R190 for the 68km race and R70 for the 21km race. This year’s event is supported amongst others by the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture and the Eastern Cape Gambling and Betting Board. The organisers will announce 2014 event sponsors soon The Eastern Cape Gambling and Betting Board Public Relations Officer, Pumeza George said the company would use the race as a platform to promote the “responsible gambling theme.” The day will offer three races for the various categories of runners. Following on last year’s programme, the 68km race will start at Bhisho Stadium and end at the Jan Smuts Stadium in East London. This event is not for the fainthearted, and it is expected that fit amateur runners looking for a challenge and professional runners will be up for this event. The 21km Legends Half Marathon lends itself to social runners and professionals alike, while the fun run event over 5km will be staged with the aim of introducing non-runners to the sport. For competitive male and female runners, total prize money on offer for the Marathon and Half Marathon has been set at R1 million, which will be divided between the top male and female runners in each race.

Mr Luthando Bara, who is the race founder said “We have decided to focus on encouraging our local Eastern Cape runners to participate in numbers. To incentivise Eastern Cape participants over and above the R1million in stake money, R30 000 will be awarded as special prizes to the top five Eastern Cape male and female finishers in the Legends Marathon and Half Marathon. “We have also decided to subsidise runners from out of town but who still reside in the Eastern Cape if they are unemployed or battling financially. We have dormitory accommodation in King William’s Town and East London. For a nominal fee of R100, applicants can use the accommodation and get a meal on Saturday night. Applications for the subsidy must be made through the Legends Office,” Mr Bara said. Once again, this unique race day offers the man in the street a chance to “run for a cause”. Individuals or teams of runners are free to promote any cause they prefer. “If runners indicate on application their preferred charity or cause, we will allocate five percent of race revenue to the most popular causes as voted for by the runners on the day. “Last year we had limited live coverage of the race on television but it looks like this year we will be live on TV for the whole race. “We have learnt a lot since our inaugural race last year, Legends Marathon day will once again be used as a qualifying race for the Comrades and Two Oceans Marathons. This year, we will definitely focus much more on the individual runners’ needs. The safety and supply needs of runners will be taken care of. We will also make the entry process much easier,” said Mr Bara. The hallmarks of the Legends Marathon Race Day will be thecompetitive aspect, social enjoyment and promoting exercise as an important aspect of healthy living. “We believe that we can achieve our aim of making the race a day that has something for everybody. We want as many people from all walks of life to come out and enjoy themselves, “said Mr Bara. Entries are now open and available at www. legendsmarathon.co.za. Please contact race organizer, Meta Scott on 043 735 1302. email: sport@ectoday.co.za
