Mayor Simon Richardson told The Echo, ‘We will work initially alongside key groups to establish the process and have already begun these discussions.’ ‘We will most probably create a 12 month project reference group to formally connect Council to the process and lay out a timeframe for the process to unfold.’ ‘What is key is for the process to be open and accountable and for all voices to be

heard. We will most likely establish a working party to obtain ideas, create assessment criteria to weigh up formal proposals etc and we all see which ideas can fly and which may not. We will know more in the next week or two.’ The Echo also asked Cr Richardson if there ‘was any dealmaking with the National Party over this? – ie did the coalition ask for anything from Council in return?’ The mayor replied, ‘No, except [the] usual land transfer points, such as no further liability for NSW Health, for Council to take over any remediation costs etc.’ As for those remediation costs, he says they are not known yet.

sharks, with all but one removed from the inshore zone and released alive.

Shark Watch unfunded ‘In the meantime, an effective warning service such as that provided by Shark Watch, which uses volunteers with binoculars and trained drone

operators flying a drone with high-quality footage, remains unfunded by the NSW government. ‘The DPI will be conducting a follow-up survey of how Ballina residents feel about the nets, starting on 22 May. Please take the time to fill out the online survey when it is available or a hard-copy form at one of their beach community information stands.’

group plan rally May 19 This Friday, as part of the Stop Adani National Week of Action, the local Stop Adani Byron Shire group will take to the streets in an attempt to shift the politics and stop the funding of the controversial Carmichael Coal Mine in the Galilee Basin of North QLD. Organiser Jen White says, ‘This is a great opportunity to unite all those in the Byron community who share a common goal in demanding governments invest in renewable, smart and safe energies, preserve the rights and lands of our Indigenous people and protect the Great Barrier Reef.’

Taxpayer loan ‘We will demand that Adani does not receive the requested $1 billion taxpayerfunded loan for their disastrous Carmichael Coal that will have a significant impact on climate change and global warming.’ Q The rally will begin in Mullumbimby outside Santos at 12.30pm and will end on the steps of the Mullumbimby CommBank branch.

A boogie for worthy cause Stars of Byron Shire Dance For Cancer is back in its second year after the 2015 event raised $25,000 for Cancer Council NSW. Organisers say that the majority of the money raised was by the ‘local stars’ who fundraised continuously in the weeks leading up to the event. Stars of Byron Shire is based on the idea of a popular television show, and sees high-profile Byron Shire business people teaming up with local dance teachers to learn a choreographed routine. The upcoming gala charity event is on June 17 at the Mullumbimby Ex-Services Club and will feature a variety of dance styles including jazz, modern, pole, and line dancing.

Stars announced The stars confirmed are Basil Cameron (Byron Shire councillor), Jo O’Connor (Australia Post), Kim Dowling (Ocean Shores Tavern), Amanda Allen (Crossfit Byron Bay) and Danny Salfield (Bay FM broadcaster and author). Dance instructors include Candice Leigh (Pole Catz Byron Bay), Clement Maura and Joanna Suter (PASSADA,

Community relations coordinator for far north coast NSW Hannah Brooks says, ‘A terrific example of this [fundraising] is the Cancer Council Information Service currently being implemented

in the new Byron Central Hospital, at the very location where support is needed. Trained Cancer Council volunteers will be providing support service and information to patients, carers and health staff in the oncology unit.’ Q You can follow all the action and stay up to date on the Facebook page: Stars of Byron Shire Dance For Cancer. A website will launch soon.
