Backlash Mullumbimby’s sustainability festival Renew Fest is on this Saturday and Sunday at the showgrounds, so remember to get along. It’s not just about renewable energy and earthworms; there’ll be plenty of music and dancing as well. See the program in last week’s paper or visit renewfest.org. au to buy tickets. With all the brouhaha over sharks no-one has given much thought to marauding mozzies. Now biologist Dr Mary Gardner has done so on page 15, giving the rundown on all the different species in the ’hood and how to deter them. She also tells us there is a citizen-based mosquito monitoring system called Abuzz at http://bit.ly/mozzbuzz. Somewhat like Shark Watch but instead of sending up drones one records their buzzes on a mobile phone, as each species has its own unique sounds. Mary suggests it might be worth trying in Byron Shire. Abuzz also offers the daunting fact that there are more than 200 million insects for every single person on our planet. Q Q Q Q

It’s good news for local company Hemp Foods Australia and local foodies that lowTHC hemp has been legalised for human consumption as a food. Folks from the north of the Shire put their case emphatically for flood funding – and quicker response times – to flood recovery coordinator Euan Ferguson at the Council Chambers last week. A less sombre (and sober) way to help out with flood relief is the latest Nudge Nudge Wink Wink event at the Billi pub on Sunday May 7 from 2pm on. Put on your red shoes and dance away the flood blues.

Byron Council’s advice to cyclists more than 12 years of age to not ride on footpaths is timely, given the number of local cyclists who weave in and out of pedestrians without too much care. On the other hand, there’s not much respect given to cyclists in marked cycle lanes, and it’s
