Backlash It was the dawning of the Age of Aquarius, and it was almost okay to be different. On behalf of the Brunswick Valley Historical Society, Sharon Shostak’s latest film, Mullumbimby’s Madness – The Legacy of the Hippies, records the general weirdness, inventiveness and nakedness of the early seventies in Mullum. The world premiere is on Thursday December 3 at 7.30pm at the Civic Centre and tickets are going fast at The Bookshop. See the appropriately colourful feature on page 13. The Echo salutes the hippie pioneers – our founding editor Nicholas Shand (1948–1996) was among them – and without them this paper would not have had its freaky beginnings. Q Q Q Q

We note that Council on its website is trying to soften the blow of paid parking in the Bay by illustrating it with a rainbow Kombi with a surfboard on its racks. When the surfers arrived in their Kombis and Holden ‘woodies’ in the 1960s, seeking to sleep free on the largely quiet beachfront, they were roughed up and run out of town by the cops. Not much has changed, other than now the means of expulsion is monetary and applies to everybody equally – that’s democracy for you! Q Q Q Q

The Institute for Economics and Peace has compiled its annual Global Terrorism Index which now covers the years 2000 to 2014. According to Melissa Clarke’s report for the ABC, ‘Islamic fundamentalism was the motivation for 19 per cent of deaths, or about one in five victims of lone wolf attackers in western countries.’ Lone wolf at-

tackers include white racists. Perhaps even more interestingly, ‘The number of people dying due to [sic] terrorism has increased dramatically in the past 15 years. But it’s still significantly below the global homicide rate; 13 times more people die from homicide than from terrorism.’ It’s obvious then that we should declare a War On Humans; that should fix it. While on the subject of war, we reckon that the world is not serious about tackling climate change when emissions by the military are left out of the equation altogether. This is apparently at the urging of the United States, whose military is regarded as the largest consumer of oil and the largest emitter of CO2 on the planet. Will it even get a mention at the Paris summit kicking off on November 30?
