FUNDRAISER NIGHT

Right: Ubiquitous Mullumbimby busking band The Budz have been plying the second-oldest trade in the world outside Dennett’s IGA supermarket on Saturday mornings for the last few years. Formerly known as the legendary Vince Beck’s backing band The Vipers, Steve Berriman, Donny McCormack, Norm Appel and Brian Mollet decided to play on after Vince’s death in 2013, adding Jerry De Munga as vocalist. Honing their act on the streets of Mullumbimby, ‘the place dreams go to die’, according to Iggy Azalea, they have finally succumbed to the narcissistic urge to record themselves. After ensconcing themselves in the famous ‘Shabby Road’ studio (Norm’s workshop), their new album Riff Raff Revue will be launched this Saturday live on the street outside Dennett’s at 11am. Three cheers for firey Trudy Ashworth and her team mates for rescuing a seagull hanging upside down from a power pole at Brunswick Heads footbridge last week, held fast by discarded fishing line. Trudy climbed up, bagged the gull and with the

help of her team mates unravelled the bird from its prison. The gull successfully flew away. It’s a stark reminder to fisherfolk to pick up fishing line and even those who don’t fish can retrieve line they see lying around. Birds as big and strong as pelicans can be condemned to a slow, horrible death from entanglement. You can find out more at http://seabirdrescue.org.

sorry state of affairs, all that nature and stuff, with chief minister for setting dangerous precedents and enforcing pomposity, George Brandis, trying to repeal environmental protections, incidentally giving governments a greater

opportunity to be corrupted by major donors. The ALP (Another Liberal Party) is not exempt from this conspiracy, with Queensland’s Labor government urging a fast-track for mining approvals in the Galilee Basin.

‘A hemp-flavoured coalition of lawyers, activists and seabirds has successfully seen off Adani’s humongous coal mine on a minor technicality called “the law”.’ So writes The First Dog On The Moon, seen recently at the Byron Bay Writers Festival, in his lampoon of Tony Abbott’s depiction as ‘sabotage’ of a court ruling in favour of protecting the environment. Read/see it here: http://bit.ly/moondogsabotage. We wouldn’t want the law or the environment getting in the way of a major coal mine which is already tanking because no-one wants to invest in it, would we? The COALition is pulling out all stops to change this
