THE GENTLE ART OF WAXING LYRICAL… The other day it occurred to me that I am a hypocrite. About just about everything. I do jokes about never getting brazilians because I don’t believe in them. But I probably get two a year. I say that Botox and plastic surgery for superficial reasons is wrong because it vilifies ageing, but I dye my greying hair blond, wear makeup and love the odd spray tan. I said I’d never shop in Woolies, and now I go there daily. I am anti-CSG yet I bank with CBA and haven’t changed accounts because I can’t be bothered having to fill out any more forms and I like the staff at my local

branch. I don’t believe in using the third world or struggling economies as the factory floor for first-world gain, yet I love my iPhone. I know that the workers in the village where they are assembled have an alarmingly high suicide rate. All my clothes are probably from China, made by children. I love animals and am completely against cruelty but I love a good steak. I am a fierce environmentalist but half the time I put food scraps in my kitchen bin because I couldn’t be bothered washing out the compost bin. I am a feminist who believes that women should

DINKUM BOHOS AT PIZZA PARADISO ON SATURDAY THE AUDREYS PLAY THE BALLINA RSL ON FRIDAY

THE TIMELESS AUDREYS

The Audreys are a folk-rock band from Adelaide. You probably know them; they’ve released four albums, won a bunch of awards and toured all around the world. There are two of them. Taasha sings and plays tiny guitars and keyboards and Tristan plays normal-sized guitars and doesn’t sing. Sometimes, they tell goofy stories about when they used to be married. They don’t need an excuse to hit the road, but as it happens they want to celebrate the release of their 2014 album ’Til My Tears Roll Away on vinyl. Friday at the Ballina RSL from 8.30pm with tickets for $30.

DINKUM MUSIC

Dinkum Bohos is an eclectic duo offering audiences an interesting and intimate sonic journey via an array of instruments and styles: flamenco guitar, tango piano, funky bass, kinky reggae, soulful ballads, sassy vocals, surf twang slide guitar, French chansons, idiosyncratic drums, cruisy jazz grooves, rap, rhyme and cabaret, from deliciously laidback atmospheric vibes to inspiring uptempo musical shenanigans. Saturday at Pizza Paradiso.

I hate the idea of exploitation but don’t like the taste of Free Trade coffee. I don’t like the idea of using chemicals because they just up the toxin load for the kids, but I’ve tried vinegar, bi- carb, eucalyptus oil and in the end I decided nothing cleans like bleach. I berate people for not managing their dogs in public but I have rarely picked up my dog’s shit. When it became too confrontational in a public setting I realised the solution was not to take my dog to a public setting. I think it’s outrageous to park in a disabled car park if you aren’t disabled. But I have no issue using their toilets if the regular ones are full. I am an ethical slut. There is barely an area of my life where my belief system equates with my action in life. I still have the narky left-wing anarchic and at times socialistic

politics of my university years. In fact if anything I’ve become more radicalised. When I was a poor uni student it was easy to walk my talk because I was broke. I was a vegetarian because all we could afford was potatoes, rice and beans. I walked everywhere until I was 28 because I didn’t have a car. I didn’t watch TV because I didn’t have a TV. Being on par with your ideals is so much easier when you’re broke. It’s harder when you’re a lazy, fat, brainwashed middle-class consumer addicted to candles and cushions and anything shiny or new. I want to be ethical but I want to go shopping first. And before you start saying ‘well you could buy ethical products’, they’re too expensive. And very often I don’t like the look of them. I can’t stand hemp. I’ve been dressed by Vinnies for decades and while I don’t mind the odd fossick, these days I like my undies to be first-timers. I love new things that I don’t need made in a country that I’ve never been to by people whom I will never know who live in sad economic desolation and disconnection. of Crystal Grid Productions. There will be mesmerising installations courtesy of Zakay Glass Creations and Coda, and delicious food and treats by Byron’s Open Table Catering. 6pm till midnight. Durrumbul Hall. $25 contribution.

IMAGINE A CAREER WITHOUT LIMITS

Here Comes The Sun showcases much-loved Australian singer/ songwriter Wes Carr interpreting George Harrison’s songbook – taking on such chart-topping classics as My Sweet Lord and What is Life and The Beatles’ classic Something, a song that Frank Sinatra deemed ‘the greatest love song ever written’. Here Comes The Sun will see Wes share intimate tales and anecdotes from George Harrison himself, not only showcasing the depth of George’s music but looking ‘within and without’ on a spiritual journey, recounting conversations George started many years ago. Storytelling is what Wes does best, and this is a truly unique story, celebrating the essence of an incredible artist from a musician’s perspective. Wes Carr will celebrate George Harrison’s life and influence through the live show Here Comes the Sun with a performance at Pighouse Flicks at the Byron Brewery on Thursday from 8pm.

The Fourth Lightbody Community Dance event is happening on 30 May. This year’s lineup includes DJ Nick Taylor, Slinky, Short Circuit and Asaf and produced by Tone Wonderland

How does a person start to align themselves with their belief system and not become some sort of tipi-dwelling hemp-gstring-wearing fermentationobsessed bore? I guess I’ll never find out. I’m off to Woolies to buy a waxing kit. Hey, my brazilian’s a feminist sellout, but it’s organic. Low waxing miles when you do it at home. See, if you are clever enough, you can rationalise anything. Until there’s nothing left to rationalise…

And I know I’m not alone. Greedy consumer sellout whores are everywhere. Some people reconcile the A/B Split (Action/ Belief Split) by saying ‘I don’t care’. Or they start aligning themselves with the kind of values that match their actions. I guess that’s how you start voting Liberal. But I do care. I am passionate about the planet, about people, about corporations misusing their power, yet my brainwashing is so thorough that my beliefs in no way impact on my actions.

be treated as equals yet when it suits me I expect John to deal with snakes, spiders, cat shit on the carpet, flat tyres, mowing and whippersnipping. Anything with an engine involved I assign to him, not because I can’t do it, because I don’t have to because he can do it.
