Depending on whose estimates you fancy, some 100,000 to half a million people joined in the People’s Climate March (http:// peoplesclimate.org) on the weekend, including a rally in Lismore. Whether or not the presence of UN secretarygeneral Ban-Ki Moon in the NewYork City march will sway his political masters remains to be seen. It seems to be business as usual at the upcoming G20 summit (g20. org) in Brisbane in November, with the emphasis on economic growth. Q Q Q Q

In this New Age of Terror, the police force has more reason than usual to flex the muscles of its special squads, so you might want to read up on the clever means protesters have used to protect themselves in heavy-handed moments – see improvised gas mask, above – at the Victoria and Albert Museum’s Disobedient Objects exhibition: www.vam. ac.uk/content/exhibitions/ disobedient-objects. Clues, anyone? Members of the Nimbin Bushwalking Club recently spotted this aquatic creature at Boonoo Boonoo National Park, near Tenterfield. It is about four centimetres long and two centimetres wide with ‘wobbly insides’. If you can identify it, please email mcduck@echo.net.au with ‘wobbly insides’ in the subject window.

boxes for our local owls. ‘Six of the seven local owl species use nesting hollows to breed and nesting hollows are in short supply,’ says Rita. ‘Owls used to nest in hollows that formed in tall old trees that have mostly been harvested, or cleared and burned. Trees need to be a minimum of 120 years old before they develop owl-nest-sized hollows.’ So it seems fair enough that we should install nesting boxes in some of the bigger trees BVL has planted over the last 20 years. At the fundraising page www.pozible.com/ project/186331 Rita explains the project in a YouTube clip. Pledge what you can, and if you can cough up $100 you can have your name immortalised on an owl box! And find out more about local critters at Rita’s blog http:// mullumyard.blogspot.com.au.

energy minister Anthony Roberts in parliament what was in the coal seam gas waste water he drank – yes,

drank – at Santos’s Narrabri project, claiming it tasted like ‘Bondi surf ’. Minister Roberts responded: ‘The following chemicals, heavy metals and other pollutants were in the water I drank: chloride, sodium, barium, germanium, strontium, aluminium, lithium, boron, iron, fluoride, ammonia, petroleum hydrocarbons – no BTEX [benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes], and bacteria. Despite Mr Buckingham’s claim in Budget Estimates that “there was uranium at 20 times the state’s drinking water guidelines stored in that water”, no uranium was detected.’ Buckingham expressed his concerns for the minister’s health. We shall have to wait and see if Roberts survives as a ‘normal’ MP or mutates into something worthy of a Japanese monster movie.
