But let’s not ‘turn back the bus’; refugees from Lismore should be welcomed. They are good lantern-makers and are excellent at covering laneways in artistic graffiti, skills that should be valued here. Sure, they may initially wear ‘beards’ and ‘eat’ at our ‘roadhouses’ without understanding that as a purely ironic hipster gesture, but they are hard workers and while they save for their first rent payment we could affordably house them in marquees on Clarkes Beach. Do poker-machine cues trigger an altered state of consciousness in some players? Christopher Tricker, local resident and University of New England psychologyhonours student, is hoping to find out more. You can help him out by undertaking the study, which will take 15–20 minutes, at http://tinyurl.com/pokermachines. Already negotiating in secret over the Trans Pacific Partnership, the release of documents by WikiLeaks now shows the government planning to deregulate the banking industry under the Trade in Services Agreement (TiSA) and open up Australia to foreign banks and financiers. Good for competition or just more control for the transnational corporations at the expense of local jobs and environmental protections? Project Censored offers a good look at the financial core of the transnational corporate class at http://bit.ly/ transnat. One of life’s certainties is that ‘free trade’ doesn’t come free.
