Backlash Both police and firies have been warning people not to travel into areas where bushfires are blazing, as it hampers operations and endangers the traveller. A public information and enquiry centre (1800 227 228) has been set up and the Rural Fire Service does regular updates on fires at www.rfs. nsw.gov.au. According to news reports NSW is experiencing the state’s worst bushfires in a decade. Byron Shire has been pretty lucky so far but that’s no reason not to tidy up your property just in case and learn about bushfire survival plans from the RFS website.

This year, as always, the Mullum Music Festival has some wonderful artists coming from all over the world but what’s really exciting is the number of younger local artists who are also performing: Potato Potato, Annie Plummer, Life Line, The Sugar Spinners, The Three Sisters, Matilda Dodds and more. Most are previous winners of the festival’s Youth Mentorship, which reminds us that applications for the mentorship close soon. All budding young musicians interested should go to mullummusicfestival.com.au to apply. Q Q Q Q

S Sorrensen celebrated the joys of Dungog and the Friday night pub covers band in Echonetdaily last week (www.echo. net.au/2013/10/here-now-25). He made special mention of a young woman dancing with her own unique rock aplomb. It reminded Backlash of a woman who used to sashay backwards when dancing at the Rails in Byron Bay. Legend has it that if the music started while she was still in the carpark she would end up back in the main street.

We are told that this is a memorial at Wategos to all the muttonbirds which have been dying on our coastline in the last week or so. The cause of the deaths seems to be sheer exhaustion after flying all the way from Siberia (!) and this is a regular occurence for these overachievers. If you find birds that are still alive (or any other wild animal for that matter) give WIRES a call on 6628 1898 or Northern Rivers Wildlife Carers on 6628 1866. The House of Vincent and other fashion empires such as the Anglican Op Shop have some competition from freelance garage sales and the Brunswick Heads Old and Gold bash. Now Byron Shire Council, in a spare moment between its infinite round of ‘stakeholder consultations’ (which cleverly stall the need to make a decision), is getting into the act with Second Hand Saturday on November 16. You can register a garage sale and have it listed free at www. mysecondhandsaturday.com. au. North East Waste is coordinating the event for Council in the interest of reducing the amount of stuff which would otherwise end up in trash bins. We hear also from informed sources that ‘dumpster diving’ is quite popular among young Shire ex-pats living in Brisbane, where goods and food are thrown out at a ridiculous rate. According to the UN’s

Food and Agriculture Organisation, some 1.3 billion tonnes

of food are wasted every year worldwide.
