Hi. I know it’s Novmeber already, but the EM Issue is finally here. Apologies. September and October make up one cesspool of exams and deadlines. When you think about it, the fact that EM is smack in the middle of one of the busiest periods of the semester never fails to extract all energy from my body. Despite this, I do not resent this. In fact, this has been one of the cutest EM celebrations yet. The sparkler lighting from Launch was so cute it had me wanting to burn the clubhouse down. It’s one of the reasons why I chose it for the cover art. Ecozania also had the cute idea of engaging with the kids with career-themed stations. Sincerest apologies to the kid who wanted to make pancakes in the chef station but had to settle for making sandwiches. We hope you’ll succeed in your culinary journey. NES had successfully defeated the deficit, but more importantly, it reminded us that events are more than just the money they generate (Disclaimer to Fin: of course it’s also important to be strategic and practical with the costs of any event). Grand Tradition was surpisingly intense this year, and we were blessed with quite the lineup of candidates. Out of all the EM events, GT was the one I was most unhealthily obsessed with. Glo was the infant of EM. I’d like to think of it independently, away from the comparisons with LIV. It is its own party, with its own spirit. I genuinely wanted to go to this one, but was crushed that I ultimately couldn’t and didn’t go. At least everyone had fun, judging by the post-doc. As cheesy as it sounds, service, excellence, and tradition radiated. Ever since EM 60, the diamond year, I always found myself wondering if the 61st anniversary could live up to its predecessor. I realized that it didn’t need to. The 60th year was all about celebrating longevity, while the 61st year was all about looking forward. Right now we are looking at the very first sparks of the decade. Credit for the cover art and the subsequent art in News, Features, and Culture goes to Caitlin del Pilar.

ECOZANIA was a dream turned into reality not only for Pook Ricarte but also for all of us in CDC. With all your help, we were able to start September with a bang! Special thanks to my team heads Dave, Reena and Tin! Every EM event was also special in its own way + Virgo was hot (s/o to Echoes hihi). The first half of this sem has been packed with heart-warming Saturday mornings at ACDC, fun-filled afternoons at Vendors Elective, and lots of moving messages through our Twitter campaigns. Your generosity not only shines through during donation drives but also in the time & energy you put into attending our events. Much love for you always! Heart, Bets

Be sure to watch out for the Zeitgeist Issue in December! We’ve had quite the celebration, huh? I hope you guys had as much fun as I did! LIA QUERIJERO MEMBERSHIP Hello, Ecosoc! I just want to mostly thank everyone for participating in GT. Honestly, I really wasn’t expecting to enjoy organizing this event, but it was the most fulfilling thing. Hearing apps and mems alike mention GT as their favorite memory and knowing we’ve successfully bonded some of the people who never would’ve been friends without this event make my heart happy. It truly is a Grand Tradition with you. <3, Lia

4 Candidates for the EM 61 Grand Tradition

N E W S

Last August 31, a tradition that was years in the making, begun anew once again. As the September air rolls in, Ecosocers are again encouraged to remember what the month truly means.

LAUNCHED by RAMON TENA

This year coincides with the 61st celebration of Ecosoc Month (or EM, for short), the month-long anniversary of the founding of the UP Economics Society, and one of the most awaited events in the UP Ecosoc calendar. Aside from a very fun-filled and festive party, Launch is also an avenue to remember and laud the achievements that the UP Economic Society has achieved in both its long history but also in recent events. Its also a call to harken back its members (and show to its applicants) to what truly makes Ecosoc an organization that not only continues to stand strong in its principles and values, but as a home which comforts likes a warm hearth whose sense of community and belongingness extends far beyond the limits of the University. Unlike the 60th EM’s Launch, we decided that this year’s

16

Launch isn’t just a party. Launch is an event that not only celebrates the organization that we love and cherish but it is also a celebration of the people that have become our friends and partners throughout our life in both Ecosoc and college. It aims to remind us of the reason we launched ourselves into the wild, crazy and fun journey that we call To cap off the the UP Economics Society. night, the we (EM Board of Directors) had one more Launch tradition to do. Usually, Launch is supposed to last until 12 midnight of August 31 to formally usher in September and to officially start the Ecosoc Month calendar, however this year, the EM BOD decided to do things differently. Remember, I previously said we wanted to welcome >> Photo credits: UP Ecosoc Month EM with a bang? We did just Facebook Page

SP was introduced via an exhilarating relay race that used the theme of this year’s SP, “Ecozania,” which focused on professions to grow up

that! Initially, we wanted to have a big fireworks display, however, due to some constraints, we opted to go with sparklers instead. Even though we downgraded our initial plan, the scene with sparklers was truly magical and heartwarming, and after a few speeches from our President, Bel Bernardo, and the EM Co-Chairpersons, Hazel Syhongpan and Gab Rivera, we toasted to the opening of Ecosoc Month with a shot of alcohol (as per usual)!

||

The program started with the dinner while the audience was being serenaded by performances of Avin Abelardo and the duo of Julian Songsong and Harvey Sañga. The program proceeded then to introduce the rest of the events of EM for this year: Service Project (or SP), National Economic Summit (or NES), Grand Tradition (or GT), and GLO. All were introduced by a colorful line-up of games and performances.

into. NES was introduced via a fast-paced quiz bee wherein the questions were based on previous Summits. The rest of the events—GT and GLO— were introduced via some very special performances. For GT, EM 58 Winner, Justin Villas (or Juvi) and EM 59 contestant, Emman Bongco, dished it out in a lip sync battle extravanganza, bringing back their wacky personas and the energy that propelled them to the GT stage. GLO, on the other hand, was introduced via an exhilarating performance by E-Dance, the School of Economics’ premier dance troupe, which made use of lights to highlight the theme of GLO. As a special performance, the EM Board of Directors and the Executive Committee even dished it out in a dance battle that sent the audience wild.

EE CC H HO O EE SS

Launch was designated to be a semi-formal event (a decision which has its own traditional roots), but we also had the goal of welcoming EM with a bang! One of the significant changes to this year is that the traditional Ecosoc Month Gallery, an art installation to celebrate Ecosoc Month, has been upgraded to the new Ecosoc Month Museum. The museum showcases artifacts from the past years of EMs, such as the “Cast Awaste” shirt of Service Project of EM 59 or the pictures of LIV of EM 54, that have iconic visual and tactile representations of those EMs of the past.

ECOSOC MONTH 61 SERVICE P R O J E C T: E C O Z A N I A by DAVE BAS S

In line with our organization’s thrusts, we celebrate service through this main event! Every first semester, the Community Development Committee creates a special event for an advocacy of their choice during Ecosoc Month. For CDC 61B, we decided on dedicating Service Project to our Pook Ricarte kids. For the longest time, a staple event of our committee is to teach Pook Ricarte children english and math depending on their grades every saturday. So before we start that event, we wanted to launch it with a 18

huge event for the kids. So we thought of an event that’s similar to Kidzania where they get to experience working real life jobs and getting rewarded for it. In Ecozania, we had one job per committee to execute for the kids. We had the likes of doctor, astronaut, chef, engineer, teacher and artist. The kids had five minutes to try out each station and then rotate until they get to all jobs. After each job, they are rewarded with a stamp and one stamp is equal to one prize in the “sari-sari store.”

Overall, the kids had so much fun trying out all of the jobs and interacting with the whole organization. At the end of the day, we just made this event so that it can serve as a spark for an optimistic future for these children. They think that given their situation, they have a lower life outcome than well-off children. We want to change that and create a brighter path for all of the Pook Ricarte children. >>Photo credits: UP Ecosoc Month Facebook Page

The National Economics Summit transpired last September 20 to 22, 2019 at Hotel Rembrandt, Quezon City. Those three days were filled with engaging discussions, funfilled activities, and unexpected relationships between and among enthusiasts of Economics. Specifically, the summit mainly focused on Business Economics. The world is constantly changing and we always seek for answers to our unending questions. That is why in today’s time, everyone in the field of economics and business, from students to professionals, has persistently sought for a deeper understanding of how firms behave in the market. Through this, we are able to provide solutions that create a multitude of effects that greatly benefit the society. Here are some takeaways during the summit. As mentioned by Ms. Stella Quimbo, studies show that even though the Philippines has high economic growth rate as compared to its neighboring countries, the decrease in our poverty rate is not as good as our economic development. However, economic growth is not at all felt and we need to make it more inclusive to make this so-called 20

progress better felt by the large number of marginalized sectors in our society, as emphasized by Senator Bam Aquino and the delegates themselves in their summit statement. We hope that after all the talks, our delegates have realized that the tools of business and economics must be used to provide opportunities for the oppressed and unheard in our country. As individuals who have the privilege to stock ourselves with knowledge regarding these tools, may we tirelessly share them to every person we encounter so they too can uplift the lives of our countrymen. We would like to thank everyone who made NES 2019 possible, from the 42 Organizing Body to our 144 delegates! Big thanks as well to the people who believed in us from the very start. It was a very challenging run but it was all worth it. See you again next year! #NoToDeficit

Last September, the UP community celebrated its annual UP Pride 2019, wherein with this year’s theme of “Embracing Diversity through Equality,” the fight for equality within the campus and outside was renewed and the achievements of the LGBTQIA+ community were celebrated. The culminating event of this very eventful week was the Pride March, which called on to the various organizations and student councils within the campus to join the LGBTQIA+ community in demanding the rights that should be accorded to every UP student and Filipino citizen, regardless of one’s gender expression and identity. The UP Economics Society, being in solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community, joined in and resonated the call for gender justice and human rights, along with other activists and activists groups. Unlike the Pride March of last year which was unfortunately disrupted by heavy rainfall, the weather last September 13 favored the day and the March proceeded without a hitch. In harken back to point made previously, the March was both a rallying call and an celebration. In terms of the former, the March made

|| 22 00 11 99

21

O O CC TT O O BB EE RR

sure to make the voice of the LGBTQIA+ community permeate the halls of Quezon Hall, seat of the UP administration. For the latter, the March was very fun and educational experience for both members of the community and the allies. The March came at a very opportune time because last June, the SOGIE Equality Bill, which sought to give protections to members of the LGBTQIA+ community, failed to be passed under the 17th Congress. This was due to continued and prolonged interpellations by the opposition bloc. The members of this bloc is Senate President Tito Sotto (guilty of plagiarism and sexist remarks), Senator Manny Pacquiao (the Senate’s top absentee), Senator Cynthia Villar (guilty of widespread land-grabbing and chief author of the Rice Tariffication Law) and Senator Joel Villanueva (former co-author, defected). However, with the start of the 18th Congress, the bill’s foremost author and beloved LGBTQIA+ rights activist, Senator Risa Hontiveros, made her intention clear in that she intends to pass the bill and that she will continue to fight for this community. The March further signified that the student body will continue to press and advocate for gender justice and human rights. The UP Economics Society, in keeping true to its legacy of service, joins the LGBTQIA+ community in their continuing struggle in search for true gender justice and human rights, which rightfully so belongs to them and to everyone else. #UPTowardsEquality #SOGIEEqualityNow

GRAND TRADITION

by LIA QUERIJERO

22

If I’m being completely honest, Grand Tradition was one of the things that never crossed my mind when I was running for Memcomm VP. This is quite stupid, as it is the longest-running, major event of the committee. Coming into the semester, I was really more excited with having the team of my dreams. Karla, Mikay, and Janine are not only my closest friends but they are some of the best team players in Ecosoc. But as weeks turned into days, I really felt the impact that the event had on members and applicants alike. Who would’ve thought Nics would ever be called “GT mother”? That Paolo Bisuña would ever look at his glitter-wearing days and recall them as a fond memory of him ranking second? It really warms my heart, knowing a lot of the apps answered Grand Tradition as their favorite Ecosoc initiative. I’m also so proud of my team, and the EM team as well, for pulling off such a flawless program.

GLO

by JABBY AURELIO Last October 4, Ecosoc Month 61 held its final event, entitled Glō, in Matrix Creation Events Venue. Glō was a new event conceptualized by the EM61 BOD set to be the culminating party of Ecosoc Month. Glō is a party which made use of visual projections to accompany the music being played by the DJs. In attendance were a couple of personalities: the EM61 Ambassadors, an up-and-coming Youtuber by the name Flying Kell (who also vlogged and featured the event), and of course, Ecosocers of past and present. The program was divided into four 4 segments which spanned throughout the whole night. For each segment, there was a theme presented and projected onto the walls of the event place. The thematic visualizations on the walls were accompanied by music mixed by the renowned DJs. First of the four

24

segments had the theme of Hot Girl Summer, which centralized on the images of love, sex, magic, and a hint of hip-hop flavor. The next segment featured The Decades, capturing the retro vibe with music of the past such as Ecosoc Month’s theme song, ‘September’. Millennium Nostalgia was third in the program list, with remixes from the early 2000s being played (remixes of the kind of songs Ecosoc would typically play in bars, basically). Last was Electric Jungle, which featured the graphic projection of the EM logo onto the wall, as well as mixes of popular music being played. That Friday night also housed a couple of activities attendees could do while partying with the music. A couple of booths for games were set up such as the Velcro Ball Throw, Dare Dice, and the classic Beer Pong. Bringing the

party vibe of the night was of course, alcohol, care of Bacardi (our new favorite alcohol sponsor!), Tiger Beer, and a special alcohol mix prepared by the organizing body of EM. The place also had a very spacious area for eventgoers to rave, rest, or run around (usually depending on the amount of alcohol that was already consumed).

Ecosoc Month has always been the Adhoc wherein the org’s thrusts are concretized through the different events held in September. Each event of EM focuses on a certain theme which contributes to the whole identity of Ecosoc. The final event of Ecosoc Month usually comes in the form of a celebration – similar to the purpose of the Adhoc: to celebrate the anniversary of Ecosoc. This year’s iteration of the culminating activity is a combination of the identity of past staple parties of Ecosoc, mixed with new ideas (such as the digital projections on the walls). This parallels the direction the org is taking moving forward: to innovate and incorporate unique ideas while honoring past traditions. From this, the idea of #RememberSeptember continues to change and ultimately, grow.

Tambay Week is an event headed by the Socials and Welfare Team of the Membership Committee. This is where both applicants and members can get to know each other better through a variety of activities – playing bridge, eating treats, and so much more. For this semester, we were able to hold two Tambay Weeks; each of which offered our constituents different opportunities to bond. For the first one, we offered grilled cheese sandwiches as our treats for the week. We then fostered friendly competition by hosting a bridge tournament in the tambayan. Last but not least, everyone got to relax and play with the Nintendo switch setup on the last day. For the second tambay week, we wanted to help relieve the stress our apps and mems were feeling by offering coffee and Milo, on us. This is how we started our week. The next day, everyone got to reminisce on their high school days by wearing their school uniform for Wear-it-Wednesday. To end the week, we set up a movie marathon screening for the whole day for everyone to catch. All-in-all, Tambay Week isn’t just an event but rather, is the essence of the entire Socials and Welfare Team. This week is purely dedicated to taking care of our applicants and members which is the very responsibility this team has taken from the start. It is one, if not the most, of the most crucial projects of this team. College is hard, but everything becomes lighter if you have people looking after you. Team Socials and Welfare will do just that.

AC D C

by REENA RELLOSA UP Economics Society strives to fulfill it’s commitment to service by encouraging organization members to participate in the semestral development activities which aim to help its’ beneficiaries and the community. In September 7, 2019, UP Ecosoc celebrated the Service Project for Ecosoc Month 61 entitled Ecozania at the UP Engineering Courts. Throughout the semester, the Community Development Committee (CDC) continued to conduct staple activities namely, Vendor’s elective and ACDC tutorials in order to give the members as well as the applicants opportunities to do acts of service for the community. For the past years, Service Projects were mostly activities that contribute in preserving the environment such as coastal cleanups and tree planting activities. CDC thought that it’s also important to acknowledge the beneficiaries as the members celebrate Ecosoc Month. After all, they’re the primary reason why the organization exists. And so, this year’s Service Project was designed for the kids of Pook Ricarte. 28

Ecozania was an event that allowed the kids to dream and experience their dream jobs. Each committee prepared booths that represented different professions and each booth had a particular activity relating to their assigned profession. As the kids journeyed through each booth, they all got a chance to live their dream jobs. The kids created their own planets at the Astronaut booth, built bridges at the Engineering booth, became nutritionists at the Doctor booth and experienced a whole lot of other activities. A talk about disciplining children, hosted by Mrs. Trina Ortega, was also held for the sake of the mothers and parents who were present in the venue. In continuation of the staple activities offered by the committee, Vendor’s elective opportunities were conducted from August 28-30, September 18-20 and October 16-18. Member and applicant attendance were surprisingly high due to the fact that this activity is held after class. An hour and a half of Vendor’s Elective constitutes to 1 CDC count.

teaching the older kids has changed from one-on-one tutorials to group lessons for each grade. In this way, the kids develop a better classroom behavior that they can apply in their real schools. In addition, this system had to be implemented due to the low count of active Ecosoc members for the semester. Aside from further enhancing their knowledge and skills, the kids are also given time to enjoy through some recreational activities such as games, film viewing, dance sessions/exercises and mask-making (to celebrate Halloween).

As for the remaining tasks of the committee, a culminating activity for ACDC tutorial sessions is to be held this December at the Econ lounge to award the outstanding students for the semester. It was another fulfilling semester for the members of the Community Development Committee. It’s only hope is for Ecosoc to continue filling up Giffy’s heart tank and spreading happiness to the organization’s beneficiaries.

With regards to the ACDC sessions, the committee has organized a total of 4 tutorials, 2 Saturdays in September and 2 Saturdays in October, which were held at the Econ lounge. Currently, the committee still implements separate programs for toddlers (pre-schoolers) and older kids (grade schoolers). The toddler program consists of interactive lessons about simple topics such as fruits & vegetables, parts of the body, colors, numbers & letters, while the older kids continued to answer English and math worksheets according to their current grade level. UP Fight! Along with my GW Family, we went to the Araneta Coliseum to watch the UP Men’s Senior Basketball Team battle it out against the FEU Tamaraws. Although the Maroons did not emerge

The Tambay Week is when applicants are required to have at least ten hours of tambay in one week. Different committees commit to fun yet competitive activities that both members and applicants participate in, the perfect interaction. Along with my GW family, we participated in various games over the course of the Tambay Week. These included the Race of Thunder and the Finance Bingo. Aside from Tambay Week, my GW family and I also attended CDC’s, Sports Cup, and Genmeets together.

My guardian-ward family and I have made “tambay” for an hour in the Ecosoc tambayan and gotten to know each other quite well. We wrote information about ourselves including our likes and dislikes. We played Pusoy Dos together and also wrote cards to each other. With faculty members, we took pictures in the photo gallery exhibited at the entrance of the School of Economics. We took an Ikot jeep together. We went to Beach House in beach attire and hung out on the AS Steps. These tasks were a lot of fun, but things were just about to get better.

Speaking of snacks, we tried eating UP’s staple food fish balls, kwek-kwek, and kikiam. Honestly speaking, I never really enjoyed eating isaw, but the experience of studying in an environment that enjoys this satisfying treat makes it very enjoyable. I learned to love it as well as I enjoyed the company of my GW family.

||

My guardians were Carl Asiddao and Jes Manipon, while my co-wards included Ica Ducanes, Bettina Ramas, Pers Betana, Kendrick Cascon, and Nadine Eleazar. Throughout a span of three months, we completed quite a number of GW tasks and attended a number of Ecosoc events together.

victorious, it was a lot of fun watching the basketball game with my GW family. After that, we headed to Go Nuts Donuts for a snack, along with a few other members of Ecosoc who also watched the game.

During the Ecosoc Acquaintance Party held in the School of Economics last July 10, 2009, guardian pairs were auctioned off to the wards. As intended by the guardianward program prepared by the Membership Committee, applicants were able to bond with members with the help of guardianward tasks. These tasks were designed for fun interaction within the guardian-ward family. Aside from the GW tasks, the guardians were assigned to the wards for guidance during the whole app process, including getting to know the other members via completion of the sigsheet. (Guidance may include continued reminders and moral support.)

“Nobody, nobody but you!” My GW family, along with other members and apps fronted by Ica Ducanes, made a music parody of Nobody But You by the Wonder Girls. It really brought out the fun side of my guardians and co-wards. Throughout the whole bonding experience, I’ve learned a lot about myself as well. After this semester, I’m pretty sure that we will continue to share the joy from the experiences we spent together during the GW tasks and other moments that made me feel like I belonged to the family that Ecosoc really is.

ECOSOC PYRAMID SL EEPY HEAD

Nutritionists say that in order to be healthy, one must eat the right kind and amount of food. What better guide for that than the food pyramid, right? If you are unfamiliar with the food pyramid, imagine a three-dimensional triangle separated horizontally into segments. Each segment represents a food group, its area corresponding to the amount one is recommended to consume. (If that was not clear enough, search for it on Google.) Now, let’s tweak it a bit. Instead of the food pyramid, let us create a pyramid for the ideal Ecosocer and see what we come up with. Academics This is pretty self-explanatory. Ecosocers are first and foremost students of the University of the Philippines. A truly remarkable Ecosocer would prioritize his or her studies first before anything else. If she can balance academics with extra-curricular activities, then indeed, she can be called ideal. Tambay and mingle with the members and apps An ideal Ecosocer spends time at the tambayan, not only to make use of the facilities, but also get to know the members and the apps. She has the initiative to get to know other Ecosocers. She doesn’t have to like everyone — that is impossible — but she nevertheless appreciates everybody for being part of the organization. It is not so difficult to value other Ecosocers once we realize that our common factor is Ecosoc.

36

Support, lead, or organize events The ideal member is active, such that she supports events even if they are not her committee’s, and appreciates the effort committees put into organizing those events. But it doesn’t stop there! She also participates in organizing and leading the events. It does not mean the ideal member has to be in a high position always, but she steps up during the planning of an event and gives it her all when she’s assigned duties. CDC As the heart of Ecosoc, an ideal Ecosocer should spend more hours than required for it. She can never have enough CDC events even if she doesn’t belong to the committee. Socio-civic also entails giving back to the community, and an ideal Ecosocer knows this and lives this out. For the model member, nothing can be more fulfilling than putting a smile on the CDC kids’ faces. Bad influence, etc Telling younger batches to cut class, forcing a friend to drink, or talking about a person behind his back — being at the topmost of our pyramid, an ideal Ecosocer should live these least. In fact, this segment should not even be included in the pyramid! An ideal member can still have fun without having to create a bad image for herself and the organization. At the other side of the spectrum, if I had a pyramid, this is what it would look like. This can be embarrassing to admit, but a little dose of reality won’t hurt now, will it?

I admit that I spend more hours in the tambayan than anywhere else in the whole university. I study, do homework, eat, sleep and read here. In fact, it is almost like my second home! Every break, every vacant period and every opportunity, I spend at the tambayan because I don’t know where else to go. I know many share these sentiments since I see the same people every time I am there, and they even do the same things. It almost seems like I have no other life than the one I live in the tambayan, and sadly enough, there is little for me to live outside our beloved room 121.

EE CC H HO O EE SS

Also, my academics are only second — they’re even beside my participation in org activities. Sometimes, this actually happens especially when events are adjacent or at the same date of an exam or due date. I am sure this is a familiar scenario: you really need to go home and study, but instead, you stay for a “little” longer in an Ecosoc event just because you have a gut feeling something good will happen, or you yourself are an organizer of the event. It is a disappointing fact, but I am working on it.

|| O O CC TT O O BB EE RR 22 00 11 99

For the next segment, this just says that I am no saint. I am guilty of giving ill advice to people around me, drinking a bit more than what my tolerance allows me, and gossiping. This is kind of evil, but I find fun in these sometimes. After all, all work and no play makes me a dull person, although I am in the long and difficult process of lessening these bad habits. Even though CDC is at the top of my pyramid, it doesn’t mean I do not enjoy CDC activities because, in fact, I do. But I do admit that my CDCs are just enough to be not under probation — no more, no less. Honestly, if time and my resources permit, I could have gone to more CDCs because of the kids. Even though my pyramid is far from the ideal pyramid, it doesn’t discourage me. After all, the ideal pyramid only represents our potential to be the best we can be through Ecosoc. What

like?

T H E L I F E C YC L E O F A P U B M AT JANO DELEÑA

“Pub is life.” That is a line that you would hear from a person that makes a lot of publication materials such as posters, videos, and infographics. As a Secretary-General and as a member of the Secretariat committee for the past 4 semesters, I have learned and worked with a lot of pubmats and these create joy and bring life to the world of design as they directly communicate with the viewers.

EE CC H HO O EE SS

These pubmats are often labelled as hard, complicated, and stressful to do. Yes and No! Yes, if you have no prior experience to it and No, if you are very passionate and you allot your time to it. Today, pubmats are easy to do with the help of user-friendly software and applications such as Canva and Piktochart. These apps help you to conceptualize your design and lessen the burden of making it. However, when you wanna improve more of your skills in graphic designing, you move on to the next level which is to make it using Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, and many more.

||

Just like how a plant grows into a tree, a pubmat goes through many processes. Through my time in seccom, I have learned that a pub is created through three steps. Firstly, it starts with the ideation process by the designer. This step requires your mind, your mind and your mind. Basically, your mind is the main source of ideas for the pub. Without it, there is no pub. This is the part where you decide what color scheme, what font to use, and what icons are to be used in the output. Personally, the first step is the part wherein you use a lot of your time because you really have to imagine how your viewers would perceive your conceptualized design.

O O CC TT O O BB EE RR 22 00 11 99

Next, is the creation process. This is the application part of the first step. This step makes use of the various graphic design softwares such as the ones I stated earlier. For this part, it requires patience from the designer as this is not an easy step. I repeat, this is not an easy step. In fact, there are designs wherein it may take them hours and days in order to finish it. That is really really sad ☹. However, you need to accept the reality that having a beautiful output really requires heavy work and a lot of time from you. The third and last step is the revision/finalization process. This is a step wherein you rethink again the goals and objectives of your pubmat. It is where you assess if this design is enough to communicate ideas to your audience and if it creates an impact to them. Oftentimes, you ask your friend/ peers their comments from the design. Is it good? Is it perfect? Is it worthy of being posted online? If your answers to these questions are YES, then post it! Congratulations! You are a pubber! Be proud and commend yourself for doing a great job. Get some rest because someday you might create another pubmat. Pubmaking is complicated.This is a phrase I usuallyhearnowadays. However, I think it is better if you try it out rather than assuming that it is hard. It is never too late to try. Life is long. Share your skills. Ecosoc needs more pubbers plss AHHAHA. Ecosoc needs creative minds. Don’t be afraid and try doing pubmats!

L E T ’ S M A K E M O N E Y, H O N E Y by ANNA MARIANO

DISCLAIMER: This is all based on my experience and what I hear so it may not be the same for you! You know it’s IGP season when you start seeing people with a box of moshi manju or red velvet crinkles (pero nag-level up na, may ibang flavors na sila!!!). Some people might question why moshi manju and red velvet crinkles never go out of fashion in the IGP season. Because boys and girls, that’s where the money’s at! Here are my top 5 small scale IGPs based on profit: 1. Stickers Stickers, one of the most common yet unique small scale IGPs. Every design is different so even if there are multiple committees selling stickers, there’ll still be a market everywhere. Depending on what kind of sticker and where, it’s possible to have a profit of Php 8 per sticker. This is number 1 because stickers are usually printed in bulk and bought by packs (ex. 5 stickers in a pack). Verdict: Low cost and great profit! However, it takes time and planning for production. Don’t forget to thank your creatives committee after! 2. (RVC)

Red

Velvet

Crinkles

The all time favorite of sales! With a profit of around Php 175 per box of 20 pcs, who wouldn’t love it? Although I

40

don’t have any experience with selling this. I was thinking of it during my time as sales director for UPFront - I mean, who wouldn’t? Look of that profit right there – but my conveners wouldn’t allow it. I remember their words were “Isusuka ko na yung red velvet crinkles!” I can’t blame them considering, almost every sales committee of various adhocs were selling Red Velvet Crinkles. But hey with just 15 pesos per piece in a box of 20 pieces, it’s not that hard to sell. Just don’t sell where everyone else is selling. Verdict: Great profit, but waaaay overused so it feels like there’s more effort needed to sell. It’s not even that good, it’s easy to be “umay” after just 1-2 pieces (don’t hate me pls) but maybe that’s just me. 3.

Moshi Manju

The second favorite with a profit of Php 148 per box and multiple branches ( just google) so they can be sold freshly cooked. Also, it’s my personal favorite so if you’re ever under me for sales, you can bet that we’re going to do moshi manju. It’s sold for Php 10 pesos per piece meaning it’s relatively easier to sell compared to Red Velvet Crinkles although it also has more pieces so more effort. It has two flavors in one box – yema is the best of the two flavors, don’t fight me on this. It’s also much easier to just keep on eating and eating so stick to someone who likes to munch on something when they’re bored!

Verdict: Great profit, but requires a good amount of effort to sell. Can’t really go wrong with selling moshi manju (may or may not be biased). 4.

Walrus Chicken Skin

Everyone craves chicken skin every now and then. Not only is there a market for it but also relatively low costs. The profit per meal is often around Php 40-50 per meal depending on how it’ll be priced. All you need is to call the night before in order to reserve your order and ensure that it’s ready for pick up by lunch time the next day. Easy peasy! But just like all lunch sales, once lunch is done, the price often significantly goes down or else loss might occur. Also, it’s heavy on manpower since there’s a need for both selling and assembling the meals. Verdict: Good profit but needs manpower and planning. Limited selling and dependent on how many people will pass by. 5.

Ministop Chicken

Who doesn’t love ministop chicken? It’s affordable and filling, a college student’s The profit is really dependent on the seller. I sold it for Php 90 but recently it became Php 100 (inflation! Jk). Nonetheless, there will always be a market for it although it’s always best to give out a form the night before. It’s relatively cheap to sell (best

F E A T U R E S to get the utensils and rice in the market than the grocery!) so there’s around a profit of Php 30 per 1 piece chicken meal. However, the same risks from a Walrus Chicken Skin Sale is present. Verdict: Good profit, but it needs plenty of manpower, time, a car (because picking up a lot of buckets of chicken is no easy feat), and planning.

2.

Rummage Sale

3.

If you’re debating on what to do, I hope this article helps! I know how hard it is to decide between taking the risk of big scale IGPs or making money slowly but surely with small scale IGPs. It’s really up to you on how you want to mix and match IGPs to maximize the profit for your event. There’s no single way to do IGPs, we’ve all got our own preferences and styles in maximizing profit! It’s never just go big or go home, sometimes we all need a few baby steps to start out.

22 00 11 99

Almost everyone’s favorite except mine. Depending on the venue, it could be a pure profit IGP hence why it’s higher than Food Fair. The only reason I don’t like it is because I always have a difficulty in finding a venue. Maybe I’m just unlucky. Verdict: A great IGP, there’s a need for manpower in terms of selling but nonetheless, who would say no to pure (accounting) profit?

Other possible large scale IGPs/Honorable mentions: - Gig night (sadly, I lack information for this) - Block screening (High risk, high reward! There is a need for planning, manpower and contacting of companies) - Party (Same as block screening)

O O CC TT O O BB EE RR

I don’t have an experience in bazaars however, considering how often it’s done in econ, I’m pretty sure profit is good. The space is technically free but there are miscellaneous fees which I’m told, don’t really go past Php 20k. It’s an event that takes weeks of planning and a lot of calls to concessionaires. And we all know, they don’t always reply and even if they do, it takes suuuuper long if you’re unlucky. Verdict: Amazing profit, a bazaar could possibly double (or more) the capital that was used. However, it requires a lot of planning, patience and risk. But hey, no risk, no reward, right?

||

That’s it for small scale IGPs! Small scale IGPs are very convenient and take little to no planning. However, depending on the event, small scale IGPs may not give enough profit. Also, the manpower and multiple small scale IGPs needed eventually becomes taxing. Multiple small scale IGPs could amount to just one large scale IGP. The beauty of large scale IGPs are that it’s a huge profit. It takes more planning and manpower. Not to mention that with a

1. Bazaar

to what many think, a food fair is not completely free. However, the cost is relatively low compared to the profit. It’s possible to get a profit of around PHP 13k or more. Like bazaars, food fairs need time, planning, and contacting concessionaires. Verdict: Just like a bazaar but a smaller scale version so less of a risk but still good profit. Also, who doesn’t love more food options? EE CC H HO O EE SS

Other possible small scale IGPs/Honorable mentions: - Raffles (low cost but hassle to sell) - Coffee sale #KopikoIsLyf (low cost but needs time and manpower) - Milktea Sale (Depending on the brand, there isn’t much profit) - Shirt/Merch sale ( Just like stickers but more of a niche market) - Stick-os (low cost but may be dificult to sell) - ID picture taking (low cost and great profit! But there is a need for manpower and mostly work only at the start of the sem)

higher possible profit, there also comes a higher risk of incurring a loss. Here are my top 3 large scale IGPs:

This mostly happened because I wondered about how different orgs respond given certain situations common within the Econ setting. Also, the four-box comic style used in mangas is probably the most easy format to use for this series mainly because it lends itself to short and sharp comedy, and when I was much younger I (embarrassingly) used to make comics like these all the time using characters from Noli and Fili. So I hope you enjoy. If the art quality looks like it decreased as it progressed, that’s because it does.

APPLICANT

I wasn’t allowed to apply for Ecosoc during my first semester as a freshman. Well, technically I was allowed to apply, I had just turned 18 and was deemed capable of making my own decisions. My parents’ disapproval of joining an org immediately, however, was too strong for me to be able to make the choice to apply for Ecosoc, so I didn’t. It sucked to watch 95% of my batch go through their application process. They were learning skills, making friends, gaining memorable experiences, and I felt left behind, like any naive freshman would. Even among the minority who hadn’t applied for Ecosoc, most people applied for another ASEO org, whether it was OBEM, ETC, Debsoc, or IC. Back then, I couldn’t understand my parents. My mom specifically loved to cite the freshie recruitment banned, and at some point threatened to expose Ecosoc for allowing to freshmen to undergo their application process. By the second semester, I already had no intention for applying. I was over it. Suddenly, I get a text from an unknown number asking me if I’m available during the schedule of the Apps’ Orientation. Apparently, another friend had signed me up. I guess it couldn’t hurt to just play along. It wouldn’t matter whether I passed or not. The second semester’s app batch was definitely smaller, and not as wild and energetic as the first semester’s batch. Still, I got to know several amazing people. This was my opportunity to meet a diverse bunch who weren’t predominantly from my batch, and it wasn’t hard to get to know all of them either. The maturity and patience of the other apps was what really helped me navigate such a org that seemed so different and alien to me. This different experience is what helped me gradually warm up to Ecosoc. After completing one semester in UP, my impression of Ecosocers went essentially became “the exact type of people to bully me in high school” just from what I saw in my batch mates after they went through their app process. After my own app process however, I saw that maybe I could have a place in this community after all. I was wrong to judge them. There’s a number of remarkable members who were app-ed during the second sem: Mia Cruz, Tin Magaling, Je Magpantay, Janell Retardo, Avin Abelardo, and so much others. Everyone’s process is different, whether it’s in applying for an org, discovering your own strengths and weaknesses, exploring passions, or even in making friends. For some, app-ing for Ecosoc came first, and selfexploration and discovery came next. For me, it was the other way around.

HOW 2 WIN CARD GAMES JO ER GEN C A MA R A

1. Understand that the probability of winning card games in general is a broad mix of luck and skill. It can be definitely said that one person can get way better cards than his or her opponent, but it doesn’t mean that the person with the bad hand automatically loses; that person just has a higher probability of losing. Nonetheless, I’m just gonna focus on how one can win card games more often on skill, because oftentimes the hand that we get at the start of the game is often outside of our control. As the popular quote says, we play with the cards we’re dealt with. 2. These are mostly general and initial stuff

58

and doesn’t apply to any specific game, but taking note of these tips and remembering them when playing card games can really take you a long way. 3. What you have is what others don’t. Always understand that your cards are your best source of information at the start of a game. Take note that there are 4 cards each of the same character and 13 cards each of the same suit. An example would be in the case of bridge where you have 2 Aces. That means that at least one player doesn’t have an Ace because since you have 2 Aces already, the two Aces are amongst the three other people you’re playing with. Obviously, you can’t exactly expect all of them

to have at least one Ace. That means one player obviously can’t take control of a round for at least the first three rounds of the game, because usually only Aces are used to win and take control of a round. A mirror image way of understanding this is that if you don’t have an Ace, that means there is another player with two Aces in his hand; the four Aces are split amongst the three other players (since it’s not with you), so it comes to logic that one player at least two Aces. It’s all a simple process of using logic and elimination. These two things help you the most in making the right decisions when playing.

6. Don’t overthink. Taking a mental note of everything and being indecisive can only get you to almost nothing. Calm down and try to be practical about it. Just weigh down your options and as a rule of thumb, just go for the decision that has the highest probability of turning the game into your favor. It’s your best course of decision in the face of no explicit information. Don’t be like Chidi Anagonye from The Good Place. It’s also a game of luck after all.

EE CC H HO O EE SS || O O CC TT O O BB EE RR 22 00 11 99

4. Observe carefully how the other players act, for this can also give you information that can help you win. Always think in your other players’ shoes. This is most obvious in the case of blind bridge where you put down a winning card and the last person throws down a barren card when he could’ve easily trumped it. Was that because he’s my partner or was he bluffing?

5. Take note of what cards are out of play and what’s not. When you play bridge and you have a king di, wait for the ace di to be put down so you can secure the round with your king. The same goes for pusoy dos. When you have a 2 heart, you can either wait for the 2 di to be gone first before putting it down to take control, or you can put it down so you can try to bait out the person who has the 2 di. Again, it’s using process of elimination here, and it’s very important.

SMASH 101 B E R N IC E HENSON

So you wanna know how to Smash. If you’re thinking smash with a winky face and a few choice emojis right after then look elsewhere because Smash is short for Super Smash Bros., specifically the latest installment: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch.

of Super Smash Ultimate or have a friend who has both.

There are multiple reasons why you would want to get better at the game like wanting to be better than your sibling/friend/that one person you can’t beat but you’re probably reading this because you want to last longer than 30 seconds or how to avoid SD (or selfdestruct, this is when you fall off a stage and lose a stock without your opponent even touching you).

2. Learn the controls. Not just the basics.

Here is advice that you’ll need then: 1. Own a Switch with a copy

60

A Switch isn’t as expensive as it used to be but it’s still a bit pricey so just convince your friend to buy one. If both of you are broke then it’s time to make a new friend.

The controls vary on what controller you use but generally you should be able to practice and familiarize yourself with the controls. You may know the basics like moving using the analog, attack using A (for neutral or ‘normal’ attack) and B (for special, usually ranged, attacks), and jump using the Y button. You can also grab your opponent if you’re close enough by pressing the L or R buttons, just don’t mistake it for shield which is

the ZL or ZR buttons. But combining movement with attack buttons can result in a wider and better moveset. Smash isn’t an easy game to button smash but it is fun to explore. Like in the case where you’re knocked off stage and your jumps don’t reach the platform: use your character’s UP B (tilt the analog stick up while pressing B at the same time) and you’ll be able to recover back to the stage. There are more combinations and the results can vary per character so it’s best to practice! When in doubt you can spam B or Side B (tilt analog stick to the left/right and press B) because that’s always a fun move for you and not your opponent.

4 . P r a c t i c e !

3. Explore the character roster and find a main.

Happy ing!

Smash-

Ganondorf. Just don’t get knocked off stage since his recovery back isn’t the best.

O O CC TT O O BB EE RR

Or

No matter your skill level, however, the most important thing is to remember to have fun and not scream too much when you finally beat that one person.

||

“I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.”

5. Use Ike. One word: NAir (Neutral Air: jump + A). :)

There’s a lot of youtube videos and guides on how to use a certain character if you’re serious. Sometimes they can show you moves and combos that will inspire you to play and practice more.

EE CC H HO O EE SS

There are 76 characters with each their own pros and cons. From Kirby to Inkling to Pokemon to Castlevania to Fire Emblem, there are so many characters and probably even from franchises you’ve never heard off. Once you’ve tried each character out then it’s good to have a main or a character that you use the most. This is a character you’re the most comfortable with as well. Why have a main? As Bruce Lee once said,

Practice is always the key to everything, you won’t be amazing on your first try. So you have to practice! It can be with yourself in the training mode or with others. You can always use your time doing something else like study but why would you when you can play Super Smash Ultimate?

6. Research online if you’re that serious.

The more you use a certain character the better you play. Soon you’ll know perfectly both the limitations and potential of your main. You can also finally relate to those ‘Your personality based on your main’ memes that would pop up eventually. 61

DEAR EXECOMM 69 BEL BERNARDO

Dear Execomm 69, Just wanna start off by saying how fucking cool it is that you’re leading the org on it’s 69th year! (HEHEHEH NICE :’)) ) I’m so glad that there are still individuals who are so passionate about our org! Like the previous batches have led Ecosoc, it’s now your time to do so. My stay in Ecosoc has been filled with so many wonderful memories so far, and as I write this now, it’s surreal that I only have two more months left in my term. It feels like it was just yesterday when I started, and now, I’m about to say goodbye. I owe much of my growth, and who I am today to this organization, and I only hope that it changes you in the same way. I’ll always cherish all the google sheets, inumans, bridge games, scav challenges, GT performances,a nd all the moments in between. Live in the moment, and take it all in. It’s cliché as fuck, but college really is a time in your life you’ll never get back. Don’t be afraid to take on new opportunities, innovate, improve, and make the org your own. Make it

a home for all the members, somewhere they can come back to when they need to feel safe. Don’t be afraid to give this organization everything you’ve got, because it gives back tenfold. As Execomm, the truth is the road will be long and difficult. But with every new challenge and obstacle you face, you will learn more about the org and about yourself than you did before. While work is important, never lose yourself in it. Take time to rest when things get rough, and always treat others with kindness. I don’t really know what the future’s going to be like, or how different things will be. Maybe things will change drastically, or maybe it’ll stay the same. What I know is that as long as the organization has a group of passionate people behind it, it will live on. And that’s just what Ecosoc does best— incite passion in its members. As you carry on this org’s legacy on its 69th year, do all things with our thrusts in mind. Know that every Ecosoc alumni is behind you and is wishing you the best! Hope you find as much love in the org as we have, and that you enjoy every minute of your stay in it. Love and best wishes, Bel Bernardo President, 61st

LOV E ,G LO GAB RIVERA

EE CC H HO O EE SS

How do you even begin leveling yourselves to LIV? This was one of the biggest questions we needed to answer coming into EM 61. We knew we wanted a party for the culminating event – the survey said it all. But as to what party, we were stumped. The idea behind Glō (whose name actually came from Teo hehe shoutout lang!) was simple: LIV without the paint and water. But how then do we set it apart from every other party? The next five months would be a series of continual conceptualization and brand-building for Glō to the event that it was – an augmented reality party experience with free-flowing drinks and the hottest beats brought to you by the biggest DJs in town. Yet, more than that, we wanted Glō to be a sort of backto-form to what EM should be – a month of fun in the spirit of excellence, service and tradition for the organization. More than its being an external event, what mattered more to us was the enjoyment of the members above all else. After weeks of preparation, disagreements, unsettling compromises, and a whole lot of teamwork, it was Glō time. October 4, 2019. Ingress began at around 3 PM, and it was a little lighter than expected – everything was going smoothly and logistically, we were fine – until Bacardi called. Apparently, there was some internal miscommunication within their team, and told us they were going to arrive at the venue at 10 PM. Obviously stunted but remaining unfazed, the CorPar team acted as swift as they could acquiring the back-up Bacardi in a nearby bar. And just as the gates opened, there they were – five beautiful women carrying over 50 bottles of cold, hard bottles of rum. As with every party, things started a little slow, but quickly picked up pace, and the next thing I knew, there were people lying on the floor, passed out. Maybe it was the dizzying lights or the alcoholinducing games or maybe it was the extra spiked gin (hehe) – but it remained: people partied; they partied hard. It was the BOD’s final hurrah and so we weren’t excused from the drunkenness of the night as we shared a full shot of rum to toast the end of this year’s Ecosoc Month. The night was full of booze, color, lights and so much fun. People from different schools, coming together in one ruckus of a party. But it was the Ecosocers who took their time to dance the night away with their fellow members that made the night all the more special. To Ecosoc, Glō should not just be a party, but a celebration of the triumphs of the org. When the clock struck 12:30, and all the lights had been turned on, when the alcohol stains and the puke puddles were revealed in the light, and the people booked their Grabs going home, what remained were the remnants of a night of Ecosoc, for Ecosoc. So here’s to the triumphs, to the failures, to the bonds, to the struggles, to the courage, to the fear, to the hope of the next generation – here’s to Ecosoc. May we all bask in the Afterglō.

WELCOME TO CLOWN SZN by ANDREW BANAAG

*honkhonk!* The high-pitched and incessant repetition of man-made clown nose noises echo through the never-empty hallways of the University of the Philippines School of Economics. In fact, you’ll hear this sound wherever class is bound to happen. From the ancient and crowded walkways of Palma Hall, to the weathered why-is-this-collegeso-far-from-us College of Science paths and crossways, the honks never stop. An epidemic so contagious that perhaps, as you read this and hear these words for the first time, you are clueless to the fact that you may have contracted the disease. Beware! Clown szn is upon us, and no one is safe. Clown szn: what on earth is it? Well first off, szn is just a shortcut for the word “season”, in case any of you were wondering. However, put the word “clown” and “szn” together, you get something completely in its element. Clown szn is unlike normal seasons like spring, summer, fall, or winter. Unlike these, clown szn is unpredictable. It can come to anyone and any given time, no matter where you are or what you believe in. It is impossible to hide from, unless you’re a legitimate loner who prides him or herself on having no social life whatsoever. If you’re reading this, however, I highly doubt you’re one of those. But again: what on earth is it? Clown szn is that particular time of the year when people you thought you could trust turn out to be filthy, despicable degenerates! And sadly, these kinds of people are not as far and few wide as one might think. The worst part about clown szn is that, at its onset, you’ll do your best to deny that perhaps that you are “clowning around” and are merely “testing the waters” because you want to give them the “benefit of the doubt”. This is by no

66

means a wrong thing to do; it is actually in your best interest to do just this. However, you may quickly realize that that person deserved no such “benefit of the doubt”. But this is the point of no return; it’s much too late to back out and you’ve no choice but the painfully and heartbreakingly push through until the very end. Clown szn is even more painful because those seen as people with good hearts and think nothing but the best of others are the most susceptible to such sickness. Who would have thought that thinking only the nicest of other people only brought pain and suffering, right? Hilarious really! Exactly why this is called clown szn: just like clowns, this was supposed to be funny, but in the end it really wasn’t LMAO! But I digress, you’re probably wondering how you can avoid such a dastardly situation. Well, news flash, you can’t! Unless you seriously avoid everyone you’ve ever known and everyone you’ll ever know (which I highly doubt you’ll do). The only advice I can give is to get ready for it, and get ready for it quick! The honks draw ever closer. Do you hear that? The circus has arrived.

S A F E S PAC E — B E H I N D THE EP Joseph Marasigan

Six months of endless writing, collaborating, conceptualizing, and producing—was it all worth it? That remains to be seen, but I can say for a fact that the reception has been beyond overwhelming. Safe Space was a passion project I undertook from the start of the year onwards, and there was a lot of pressure surrounding it, mainly because it was the first time I had a conscious effort to establish identity. And after the EP got out on Spotify and people downloaded it, I’d like to think I’ve achieved that goal somehow. I have been producing music since I was high school. Making Hip-Hop, EDM, synth funk, and electronic beats helped me get over my pretty crippling social anxiety back when I was a kid starting out. Back in 2015, producing beats meant getting out there and promoting your material in the clubs while you craft out DJ mixes, superimposing your original tracks with whatever was the freshest, hottest joint. It certainly wasn’t a problem for me, since I got into the craft

68

pretty quick, and consolation was the fact that got invited to parties in the South that were way more exclusive than I’d ever manage—at the comfort of the decks behind the dance floor, wary of any interaction with the cooler kids. However, I gave up DJing when I realized my dreams were a little more specific. It came to a point wherein I was playing my original tracks from my laptop and I honestly felt that I wasn’t doing justice to the music anymore, and I wanted to do more. As time passed, the party scene died, my music tastes changed, people’s music tastes changed, music technology got more exciting, etc., etc. I found myself producing for my friends who suddenly got signed into Universal Records, fern. & TALA. I also found myself making beats for a bunch of friends who rapped and sung as well, including Ecosoc’s very own Celina Pacana, Gabe Austria, and a bunch of people I met online. I felt good being eclectic and warping my sound to suit the style of the artists I was collaborating with, but even then, I felt incredibly limited in the output that I was releasing, and even if the projects I was doing were far cries from the beats and gigs I was doing back in 2015, I constantly faced recurring dilemma of establishing my who I wanted to be as an artist and sticking to it, and yet providing leeway to stay prolific nonetheless. Tall order, I thought, since I didn’t know where to start.

So it took that one fateful day, around December 2018, when I was in the Studio with fern. and Kiana Valenciano, working on a new track. After the session passed and everyone left, the sound engineer told me that my beats weren’t up to par with what was in the industry, mainly because music by bands like Rivermaya and Ben&Ben sounded “bigger”. I didn’t exactly understand what he meant in that moment, but I remember feeling pretty bad going home, deciding to channel that energy into music.

The title Safe Space is, in its most shallow aspect, a metaphor for how I saw music in my early days, being behind the decks away from people judging me and compensating for my social anxiety and “not being cool enough”. But the EP title is a representation of my journey

22 00 11 99

I found that the concept of the track was in line with what I was trying to do.

O O CC TT O O BB EE RR

I started pulling out beats from the past I threw away, seeing how I could twist it and put it into context with this newfound theme and work ethic. I started writing and writing, coming up with full fledged verses like the ones on “Try.” Soon enough, I had a list of artists I wanted to work with, churning out collaborations with people like Lil G, who did the French rap on “Retribution”, and Young Cocoa, who I closely worked with to make “Kafka”. “Plunge,” on the other hand, was an old track that found a home in my EP, initially because -

through music until this point. I’ve been playing it safe—producing for other people, being a chameleon towards whatever’s cool and trendy in music and simply blending in, and not talking about the things I actually wanted to talk about on a record. The EP explores the idea of a “safe space” as both a good thing and a bad thing; and releasing the record was the act of putting an end to being “safe” and basically getting out of my comfort zone.

||

Listening to the song after finishing it felt like a breath of fresh air for me, I knew that being a rapper-producer meant pouring out my feelings into beats and writing verses about things I couldn’t explicitly say on a beat. Then and there, I decided to explore the concept more and make a full-length EP.

EE CC H HO O EE SS

As fate would put it, I wrote “Retribution” that day.

The EP’s been out on Spotify for a month, and the reception has been great. To this day, I am still a bit uneasy about sticking to this artistic direction, but I am keeping it up as much as I can. I hope the EP is a catalyst for better days to come for me, music-wise.
