IntroductionThis Entry is About Architecture of a Smaller Scale. One that endorses Wellness, Retreat and Harnesses the Energy of the Outdoors. Rooted in the inevitable call for “responsible downsizing” and reflecting on the paradox between wasteful and resourceful, this project offers a new look at the needs for sizable contemporary living. Inspired by familiar archetype found in many coastal cities, the lifeguard station serves as an observation post during the summer and as source of revenue and hospitality during the winter season. In many instances it produces a justifiable attempt in developing rotational use of Ephemeral Architecture.

Study of a Lifeguard station / Tel Aviv 2012 Location Non site specific, suited for tropical and semi tropical climate. Foundation made of concrete piles and can be adjusted to all terrain conditions. ProgramThe program calls for a free-standing, prefabricated dwelling unit with a footprint of no more than 400 sf fitted for two adults and includes space for: sleeping, bathing, cooking, living, working/studying, and storage areas. The design conforms to the US federal and local governing codes and in accordance with Environment and public health codes. The proposed structure will not only deliver shelter, but also provide more environmentally responsible and energy efficient solutions. Some of the “green” features include: PV membranes, sunshades, Tank less water heater, energy monitoring system, low E glazing and Recycled content with no off gassing materials..Etc. The structure is designed to “sit” lightly on the land in order to mitigate site disturbance on sloped or flat terrain. Sun paths and prevailing wind directions are considered in the design of the skin covered with PV panels and punched skylight openings to minimize excessive heat gain and maintain a cool interior. SKIN Performance The skin wrap is intended to deliver uniform lighting with the use of Polycarbonate for complete day lighting solution, thermal insulation and UV protection along with the 12” thin film Solar energy collectors. Other options considered are Aluminum Composite Material (ACM) consists of two sheets of smooth .02" aluminum thermo bonded to a polyethylene core in a continuous process. Structure Option 1: pre framed glulam ribs Option 2: Rigid skin that can hold its weight without exceeding a 2” face at the edge of the wrap.
