This October edition marks the 21st anniversary of the EAST COBBER magazine. 244 monthly issues, 19 community parades, a website, a Facebook page, twitter feed, 3 children, and the same husband later, I am still focused on informing local residents about our good neighbors, special events and local issues in East Cobb County. Since 1993, the EAST COBBER has been publishing articles about East Cobb volunteers, artists and advertisers, clubs and community leaders, musicians and moms. The EAST COBBER front cover will continue to feature those people in East Cobb County making this area an even better place to live. The EAST COBBER has also become well-known for its special sections. This issue features our ninth annual Private School Guide, as well as our monthly Seniors section, Dining Guide and Health & Wellness section. It has always been my intention to provide useful and relevant information that you can’t find anywhere else and that focuses exclusively on East Cobb. I hope you enjoy reading the EAST COBBER as much as I enjoy putting each edition together month after month. After so many years of meeting readers and business owners, I am reminded everyday of how many really nice people there are in this community. East Cobb has so many residents who take the initiative to help out, to share their opinions and/or talents, in order to make East Cobb County a better place to live. The annual EAST COBBER Parade & Festival is another example of neighbors coming together to celebrate our great community, and for me, as the producer/director of the parade, I am able to witness first hand the genuine kindness, generosity, and cooperation East Cobbers demonstrate to make the this special event such a rousing success. See pages 6-9 for some photos taken that day. I may put the magazine out, but it belongs to the East Cobb community. Special credit goes to the East Cobbers that reach out to me to discuss story ideas, submit articles, and to advertise. Of course, I am grateful to those who just pick up the paper at one of our 500+ drop-off points every month and actually read the paper! In a world of conglomerates and sensational journalism, your kind comments and constructive criticisms inspire me to continue my work as publisher of a truly grass-roots publication. The 19th Annual EAST COBBER Parade On Saturday, September 13, East Cobb residents came together under sunny skies to continue an annual hometown tradition: the 19th annual EAST COBBER Parade & Festival. Over 1,500 parade participants representing 80 different groups marched down Johnson Ferry Road to celebrate East Cobb! The parade staged at the Mt. Bethel Elementary School’s parking lot, stepped off at 10am and ended at the Fountains of Olde Towne shopping center at approximately 11:15am. Crowds lined Johnson Ferry Road early to get the best view. “Kids” of all ages enjoyed the floats, decorated dogs, high school marching bands, and vintage cars as they marched down the parade path. East Cobb schools honored their principals and/or their “Teachersof-the-Year.” The EAST COBBER Parade has earned the nickname, “The Candy Parade,” because just about every entry throws candy to the crowd. The EAST COBBER appreciates the superb talents of the Cobb County Government’s Communications Department staff. The staff came out early on Saturday morning to produce the COBB TV23 broadcast of the EAST COBBER Parade. The EAST COBBER Parade can be viewed in its entirety on youtube.com. Many, many thanks to Cobb County Police Special Operations Unit and Cobb County Department of Transportation for ensuring the safety of parade participants and parade watchers. The amount of financial support necessary to ensure the success of this annual special event is paramount. Cobb County 2016 SPLOST Vote Scheduled November 4 On November 4, Cobb voters will be asked to approve whether or not to extend the county’s SPLOST for six more years. This article outlines Cobb County’s 2016 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) as adopted by the Board of Commissioners on July 22, 2014. The following briefly describes the purpose of each capital improvement and the anticipated corresponding funding. The 2016 SPLOST is intended to address the immediate needs of Facilities, Technology, Parks, Libraries, Senior Centers, Public Safety, and Transportation that affect the future of Cobb County. The SPLOST will be in effect for a six (6) year period from January 1, 2016 through December 31, 2021.

PUBLIC SERVICES IMPROVEMENTS - $102,913,526 > PARKS AND RECREATION IMPROVEMENTS - $77,508,779 Funding for these projects will be used for upgrades, enhancements, and renovations to existing park buildings, fields, and facilities. > LIBRARY IMPROVEMENTS - $23,203,167 Projects include construction of two new Library facilities and upgrades to other existing Library facilities including technology enhancements and improvements that will allow for more efficient and effective use of space. > SENIOR CENTER IMPROVEMENTS - $2,201,580 Projects include expansion of the existing North Cobb Senior Center and upgrades to other facilities to allow for more efficiency and greater use of space. SUPPORT SERVICES IMPROVEMENTS - $48,019,380 > FACILITIES - $17,940,380 Projects include infrastructure improvements of existing facilities, and the construction of a new millwork shop and new fleet maintenance facility to support the increase in public safety vehicles. > TECHNOLOGY - $30,079,000 Enhancements will provide many upgrades to existing applications, create an eGovernment presence (web and mobile access to key county services), the construction of a new data center, and the creation of a disaster recovery site. Decisions Are Being Made About Your Child’s Education. Do You Want To Participate? By Chana Wade and Kristine Schwartz, East Cobb County Council of PTAs
Did you know that less than 35% of voters in the July 2012 primary election were parents of school aged children (between the ages of 25 and 49)? This data is available on the Georgia Secretary of State website. Our elected officials make decisions about education and other issues that are important to our children and our community. Election results determine which individuals will make decisions that directly shape your child’s education. As parents, we devote an enormous amount of time and energy contemplating and worrying about our children’s future. Are they receiving the best education and participating in activities that will prepare them for challenges ahead? Are their friends a good influence and are they making good choices? And so on, and so on! We know that education has a direct impact on their future. However, are you aware of how many individuals in government office directly influence the quality of education our children are provided? Here are just a few of the leaders who have a direct impact: • The Governor: The Governor is one of the single, most significant decision makers in education. With the assistance of the Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget, the Governor develops and submits an annual statewide budget proposal for review and approval by the legislature. The Governor also has “line-item” veto power, which he can use to remove appropriations he opposes. These tools allow the Governor of Georgia to play a strong role in establishing priorities for the use of state resources. In other words, important decisions about how much money is allocated and how many resources are provided for our state’s education are made in the Governor’s office! • The State Superintendent of Schools: The State Superintendent of Schools is the administrative head of the Georgia Department of Education. The Superintendent oversees the state’s K-12 public education system and is charged with establishing the policies and managing operations of the system. The office determines how federal education dollars are allocated, the type of standardized testing administered, how our teachers are evaluated and the type of standards they must meet. All these decisions directly impact your school and your child’s education. • The Georgia General Assembly: The Georgia General Assembly consists of the Senate and the House of Representatives, both of which we, as voters, elect. As elected members, their main role is to propose and vote on legislation, including the state budget, that can and does impact the way our schools function and how our teachers educate. • The Cobb County Board of Education (BOE): The Cobb County BOE members have full authority to control and manage the public schools within the Cobb County School District. They hire your school system’s superinten14 October 2014
dent, make our school system’s budget decisions, determine the property taxes which fund our schools and manage the implementation of the education SPLOST dollars. In short, guided by the policies and budget provided by the State, the Board of Education sets the direction of the Cobb County School District. As parents, our lives are extremely hectic and it’s difficult to prioritize except when it impacts our children and their future. With this in mind, one of the most important tasks you can accomplish this November is to vote and have the opportunity to “elect” or to “hire” the individuals you believe will make the best choices for your child’s education! Georgia’s Secretary of State is making the voting process easier than ever: • Absentee Ballot: Any voter in the state of Georgia can request an absentee ballot for any reason. Applications must be received by October 31st and all ballots must be returned by 7:00 p.m. on November 4th. Election officials request that submissions of absentee ballot applications be turned in as soon as possible. • Advance Voting: Throughout Cobb County, there are advance voting locations, many of which open October 13. • Sample Ballot: You can print your very own sample ballot before Election Day. Use the sample ballot to help make decisions ahead of time, so you are well-informed and efficient. • Polling Place Information: Enter your address and zip code on the “My Voter Page” on the Secretary of State website. This option will provide you the address of your polling place – Effortless! To Summarize, If You Want a World Class Education – Hire the Right People! Get Out and VOTE on November 4th! East Cobb County Council of PTAs Celebrates the Arts! By Patty Pace and Cindy Goolsby, East Cobb County Council of PTAs, Reflections Co-Chairs
“Creativity is intelligence having fun.” - Albert Einstein As parents and teachers, we cherish our students’ creative endeavors -- from the homemade gifts and cards they make to the countless dance, band, orchestra and choral performances we attend. We turn the images into coffee mugs, frame the brightly colored pictures and share the photos and videos we take with friends and relatives. Their art, in whatever medium they choose, is a reflection of who they are. Let us celebrate that! Each fall, local PTAs and the East Cobb County Council of PTAs (ECCC PTA) participate in and support the National PTA Reflections program. For over 45 years the National PTA has promoted arts appreciation and recognition as part of its mission to ensure that all children receive a quality education, including an arts education. Students from kindergarten through 12th grade have the opportunity to enter original works of art in six categories: dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts. In this school year, entries will be judged on how well the student uses his or her artistic vision to portray the theme: “The world would be a better place if…” Reflections’ entries are first recognized, judged, and celebrated at each local school. Selected entries are then chosen to represent local schools at the ECCC PTA level. Thereafter, ECCC PTA award recipients proceed to the Georgia PTA competition, and subsequent winning entries move on to the National PTA Reflections contest. Five students from East Cobb public schools (Rocky Mount
Elementary School, JJ Daniell Middle School, Dickerson Middle School and Wheeler High School) advanced to the National PTA competition level last year. Taking part in the Reflections program is a powerful way for students to engage in and explore the arts. Our East Cobb community is a better place because of our students’ talents. This time of year we see and hear incredible performances from our high school marching bands. Year-round we marvel at students who receive invitations to display their talents around the world. As a community, let us continue to help our students express themselves creatively by showcasing their art in our workplaces, by volunteering as judges, and by supporting the Reflections program. Mt. Bethel Christian Academy: First and Only Faith-Based K-12 School in East Cobb
As the freshmen Class of 2018 walked through the doors on August 7, 2014, Mt. Bethel Christian Academy became the first and only faith-based, K-12 independent school in East Cobb. The school’s expansion from a K-8 was made possible through the acquisition of a second campus, 33 acres near the corner of Post Oak Tritt Road and Holly Springs Road. The site had been owned by the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta, which had operated it as a preschool and athletic recreation facility for several decades. Though nearly “ready made” for a school, aesthetic and functional renovations to the existing facilities are underway and will continue through late winter. The addition of the upper school is the final stage of a plan adopted nearly two decades ago. Mt. Bethel Christian Academy was founded in 1998 by Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church, a mainstay of the East Cobb community since 1840. Dr. Randy Mickler and founder Darren DeVore envisioned a Christ-centered, college-preparatory K-12 school on Mt. Bethel’s existing 44-acre campus on Lower Roswell Road. In its first sixteen years, Mt. Bethel Christian grew from a starting class of twenty-five kindergartners to 560 students in grades K-8th. And now, with the addition of an Upper School campus serving grades 9-12, the school is poised to grow further still. Enrollment growth at the Upper School is planned in two phases. Phase One, using renovated existing facilities, will allow for a total of 180 students. Phase Two, which will require the construction of new classroom space, will push enrollment to a maximum of 450 students - approximately 110 per grade level. College-preparatory in it’s approach, Mt. School curriculum is designed to challenge students with honors and AP courses offered in all core subjects. Students are guided through the rigorous curriculum by expert teachers. The founding faculty of the Upper School are deeply experienced, certified educators who welcome the opportunity to form deep, impactful relationships with students. For students interested in athletics, the new Upper School campus abounds with opportunity. The expansive facilities include tennis courts, swimming pool, cross country course, indoor and outdoor gymnasiums, fully equipped fitness center, baseball field, and activity field. In addition, the campus features a two-acre pond, which will be used for recreation as well as experiential learning as it is incorporated into the science curriculum. Asked about the distinctives of the school, Head of School, Jim Callis, replies, “Over the course of a high school career, the typical student will spend nearly 5,000 hours in direct contact with teachers and coaches. Outside of their parents, these relationships may well be the most important in a student’s life. Mt. Bethel faculty take seriously their responsibility to be Godly role models for students who are being prepared academically, physically and spiritually to leave home, move on to success in college, career and community.” Campus tours are available and applications for 2015 enrollment are now being accepted for grades K-8 at the Main Campus and 9th and 10th grade at the North Campus. PRIVATE SCHOOL GUIDE Choosing A Private School The reasons cited over and over again by families who send their children to private schools include individual attention, small classes, teacher excellence, and high academic standards. Your decision to consider an independent/private school is just the beginning. While private schools set high standards and emphasize values, they are wonderfully distinct from each other. There are day and boarding schools; coeducational, girls’, and boys’ schools. Enrollment varies from a few dozen to a few thousand students. Some independent schools are progressive, others more traditional in structure. Private schools also serve a varying range of students in terms of abilities and interests. Some schools offer special programs such as intensified instruction in the fine and performing arts, experiential learning projects, or travel abroad seminars. Many schools excel at rigorous intellectual preparation; others are dedicated to average learners; and some specialize in teaching bright students with learning disabilities. Since each of these schools has something unique to offer, ideally you are trying to match a student’s needs with the appropriate school. Write or call the admissions office for published information about a school’s philosophy and programs, and then make an appointment to visit.

If you haven’t done so already, contact each potential school for information dealing with philosophy, curriculum, extracurricular offerings, admission process, and financing options. Compare each school’s literature with the items on your list; this should give you a preliminary sense of which schools are a good match. Take into account what type of environment would be best for your child and consider his or her individual strengths as you examine each school’s program. The best time to apply is in the fall preceding the academic year of the student’s admission; however, applications are considered throughout the school year. Most schools will require a personal interview, admissions testing, and information from your child’s current school. Ask the individual school for the details of its application procedures and testing dates. In short, choosing the right school for your child is likely the most important single decision you might make in terms of setting the proper path and direction for life. A little preparation and research on the part of parents will go miles toward making the ultimate destination clear at the exit ramp.

PRIVATE SCHOOL GUIDE The Atlanta Area Association of Independent Schools (AAAIS ) The Atlanta Area Association of Independent Schools is an affiliation of independent schools in the Atlanta area that operates under similar ethical and organizational guidelines. AAAIS schools also administer a nondiscriminatory policy towards admission and do not discriminate regarding race, color, creed, gender, national origin or age. For more than three decades, the Atlanta Area Association of Independent Schools (AAAIS) has provided a structure and framework for its member schools and the families who seek to learn more about independent school education. The association’s member schools - day and boarding, rural, urban and suburban - collectively enroll thousands of new students each year. The missions of these schools are as richly diverse as the population of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Most AAAIS schools have an application deadline in either February or March of the year prior to the time a student wishes to enroll. In order to be considered, it is essential that applicants attend to the application deadline and adhere to the deadline at each school to which they apply. Members of AAAIS utilize a common calendar for admissions issues. In particular, AAAIS schools agree to a common notification date to allow candidates to know their status, whether accepted, wait listed, or denied. The notification date generally occurs during the first week in April prior to the August a student

would begin classes. Many of the AAAIS member schools provide some financial aid to students who show documented need. No performance-based or athletic assistance is available in AAAIS schools. Policies and calendars related to financial aid vary widely between schools, and candidates interested in financial aid issues should speak directly with admissions officers at the schools in which they have interest. The Joint Atlanta Testing Program (JATP) involves a consortium of the AAAIS member schools. The JATP schools utilize a common test administration for students applying for positions in Pre-Kindergarten through fifth grade. Applicants may wish to inquire with each admissions office with regard to whether the school is a participant in the JATP or whether the school conducts its own testing for grades Pre-Kindergarten through fifth. AAAIS schools encourage families to complete their visits early in the admission process. In order to prevent inappropriate “rushing” of accepted students, AAAIS asks that parents and applicants not visit campuses between the Common Notification Date and the Common Reply Date. Pope High School freshmen Alyssa Borko and Lacy Legaspi – also Cadettes from Girl Scout Troop 2598 – recently hosted a pancake breakfast to raise awareness about the need for funding research for children’s cancer. Held on September 6, at East Cobb Church of Christ, with the help of their sister scout, Cassidy Wardrop, sister scouts from Troop 2597 and ss Lacy Legaspi and Alyssa Borko a group of chefs (their dads) plenty of buttered pancakes smothered in warm maple syrup were served. Thanks to local sponsors I-Hop, Trader Joes, Publix, Kroger and Walmart for donating the food, their pancake breakfast raised $400. All funds were donated to Curing Kids Cancer. The girls’ produced the pancake breakfast as a way to raise awareness about the need to fund research for childhood cancer. This community service project also earned them a Girl Scout Silver Award. The Girl Scout Silver Award — the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn — gives Girl Scouts the chance to choose a project that develops leadership skills and improves the community. The girls have learned a lot and will continue to enlighten the community on how they can support kids with cancer. “I learned that because children’s bodies are more sensitive than adults, children need treatments and cures that are specific to their needs,” says Alyssa. “We found out there was a lack of funding which is the top barrier to finding treatments and cures,” says Lacy. Just one year after the devastating loss of their nine-year-old son Killian to leukemia, East Cobbers Grainne and Clay Owen founded Curing Kids Cancer in 2004 in order to celebrate Killian’s life and to fund research to find a cure for childhood cancer. Frameworks Gallery Celebrates 40 Years in East Cobb

It’s clear the custom framing business that sisters Diane Spencer and Sunny Walker started in their basement 40 years ago can no longer be considered a hobby. As their business grew from the Parkaire to Merchants Walk to Woodlawn Point shopping centers, they finally settled in at their current location in Woodlawn Square 12 years ago. Also, as their interest and knowledge in original art expanded, they changed the name of their store from Frameworks to Frameworks Gallery. Frameworks Gallery is truly a local family business. The owners brought their children to work with them or helped watch each other’s children. Their sister, Jean Willey, started working with them, and a son is now the framing manager. They’ve provided artwork and framing for generations of families, and they credit their success with striving to be the best at what they do, while putting the customer first. “We love the saying, ‘quality endures,’ and we are using this as our mantra for the business,” shares Walker. Through the years, Frameworks Gallery has expanded to display a wide variety of artistic media, including oil and acrylic paintings, watercolors, pastels and pottery. In fact, they just completed the art and framing for the new East Cobb WellStar facility. “We introduce novice art buyers to the process of collecting fine art of all mediums, and we take pride in introducing veteran collectors to artists they may never have seen,” says Spencer. Longtime customer Becky Wallis shares that she goes nowhere else for her framing needs. “I have been coming here for years, and every piece in my house has been framed by them,” says Wallis. Frameworks Gallery will be celebrating their 40th anniversary with customers through the month of November, including a Gala Art reception Nov. 15. Atlanta Boxer Rescue to Hold Seventh Annual Boxerstock Music Festival meet approved adopters. Those interested in fostering a boxer should submit their application as early as possible.
The seventh annual Boxerstock Music Festival which benefits the Atlanta Boxer Rescue, takes place on Sunday, October 19, from noon to 6pm at Jim Miller Park in Marietta. This year’s event promises to be the best ever, featuring live music from both national and local acts in a variety of musical genres, including American Idol 2014 finalist, Jess Meuse. Boxerstock is a family and dogfriendly event, welcoming well-behaved dogs of all breeds. Sponsor C&C Fence Company will provide 2 fenced Mini-Dog Parks, one for large dogs and one for smaller canine attendees to roam off leash. Trainers from sponsor K-9 Coach/Bed & Bark will be available for dog training tips and demos throughout the day. Microchipping for dogs that have current vaccinations and proof of ownership will be available for $25 per dog. Atlanta food truck vendors Mix’d Up, Yoli’s and Mighty Meatballs will serve delicious food options at the park throughout the day. This year’s musical lineup includes some of the finest artists from local performers and nationally known acts. The music starts at noon and continues throughout the day until 6 p.m. Georgia native and 2014 Georgia Music Awards Country Female Artist of the Year, Megan Fowler, kicks things off at noon. Charlotte-area musicians Stolen Hearts bring their signature “Dirty Southern Soul” sound to the stage. The Larry Griffith Band will have the audience on their feet with their own brand of blues wizardry. 2014 Georgia Music Awards Country Band of the Year, Tiger Creek Band combines musical styles into a sound that’s guaranteed to entertain. Power trio JP Blues delivers searing, soulful guitars to the Boxerstock stage. Chris Nathan will blow the audience away with his mellow sound and soulful, honest voice. Featured performer and American Idol 2014 star Jess Meuse closes out the show with a can’t miss performance by one of America’s top talents. Comedienne Shelly Ryan returns to Boxerstock for her sixth year as emcee. This year’s Boxerstock features a Kids’ Village with fun activities for children, including the human hamster balls from Water Walkers, inflatables, and a second stage for kidfriendly entertainment and music from some of Georgia’s finest up and coming young artists. Other planned events include a silent auction, a dog costume contest, Frisbee demos from Dahlonega Action Dogs, agility demos from the country’s top agility boxer and others. A variety of merchandise from over sixty vendors will be available for purchase. With over 2,000+ square feet, the restaurant has more seating inside in addition to an outdoor dining area. Of special note is the bar area that has two specially designed Mah Jongg tables. These tables are state-of-the-art. Dining patrons who are familiar with Mah Jongg are invited to play. Mah Jongg lessons are planned, too! The Cantonese menu and prices stayed the same. French flair made its way to East Cobb this September. A new business called “Salon Frenchie” opened its doors within Sola Salons, offering permanent makeup services to women in our community. Owner Rita, who has been given the name Frenchie since moving to the U.S. three years ago, brings with her more than 15 years of expertise in the field.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer. In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the EAST COBBER presents some local resources that help women prevent breast cancer. Mammography screening is the single most effective method of early detection of breast cancer, and an annual mammogram is recommended for women over 40. The current blood supply has dropped critically low throughout the Southeast. Donors of all blood types are welcome, but there is an urgent need for type O negative, B negative and A negative blood donors.

East Cobb Woman Writes Book on Zentangle Trish Reinhart’s recently released book, Creative Tangle, explores the artistic side of the wildly popular drawing method of Zentangle. For those unfamiliar with this art form, it is a way of drawing repetitive patterns on paper, resulting in a pleasing end design in 15-20 minutes. It is a relaxing, meditative experience that unlocks creativity, at the same time. The majority of books available on Zentangle, contain patss Author, Trish Reinhart terns for the reader to emulate into their own designs. Most are written by CZT’s (Certified Zentangle Teachers), those who have taken the course from the founders to learn the “Zentangle Method” and become certified to teach it back in their own hometowns. Ms. Reinhart is a mixed-media artist first, and a self-taught Zentangle enthusiast, second. Her book differs from others on the market in several ways: she teaches a simple three-step method of how to create your own patterns, using inspirational objects all around you. A wealth of information on color theory, tools, materials and techniques, provide a mini art education within the pages of her book. There are also many never-seen-before projects for applying Zentangle patterns to a variety of surfaces. She obtained an Associate of Commercial Art degree from Saint Francis University in Fort Wayne,
Indiana, where the artist is originally from. After working as an art department manager for a local paint company, she spent many years working in the health insurance industry, for more earning potential. All the while, she picked up freelance work, in the hopes of returning to an artistic career someday. Creative Tangle emerged from that pivotal point in her life when she decided to take a chance at getting back into the art arena. She was intrigued by Zentangle’s potential, and knew a book written through an artist’s perspective would prove unique and possibly well-received. The second publisher she submitted it to was interested. “This is exactly the type of book we’ve been looking for,” said the Acquisition Editor for North Light Books. Reinhart was told that the book would still have to go up against a review board, before they would offer her a contract. The editor reassured her by adding, “I wouldn’t worry about that though…this is a pretty easy sell.” Ms. Reinhart now devotes full-time to her mixedmedia art pieces and has developed a product line through Café Press. Her website “Reinstonz” is under current development and will feature a weekly blog and links to where you can purchase her book and products. Trish Reinhart lives in the Northampton subdivision with her husband, Kevin. They have one daughter, Jenna, a freshman at UGA this year.

East Cobb Woman Earns International Ranking After Return to Favorite High School Sport Later, Curran-Villarreal did some online research and was surprised to find that yes, in fact, there were track meets for adults. Adults over age 30 are called “Masters” and compete in track and field events presented by the United States Track and Field (USATF) and World Masters Athletics (WMA) organizations. The main governing bodies of these track meet competitions, the two organizations conduct meets around the world with Masters athletes competing in events ranging from sprints and distance races to field events like shot put, high jump and the pole vault.

For many people, high school seems like just yesterday although our bodies might tell us otherwise. For one local woman, high school was a few days more than yesterday but she has been able to pick up right where she left off and participate in the sport she loved in high school, with unexpected results. Julia Curran-Villarreal, an East Cobb wife and mother, participated extensively in track and field events in high school. She enjoyed her years being a high jumper with the track team at Linton High School in Schenectady, New York. In fact, she enjoyed them so much that, when the opportunity came along to try high jump again last year, but at the Masters level, she jumped at the chance. Curran-Villarreal has been truly able to pick up where she left off with even better results than before. She is currently ranked first in the United States and seventh in the world for women ages 50-55 competing in the high jump. Part of her motivation for competing was to demonstrate to her children that everyone, no matter what their age, can accomplish their goals. “A few years ago, a friend and I were discussing how to instill confidence in our kids,” Curran-Villarreal said. “I have two young boys and I want them to have a nice balance of confidence and humility. I want them to be proud of their accomplishments, but also humble about their successes and many talents.” The friend asked me, “So, when was the last time you felt REALLY confident?” Curran-Villarreal thought for a moment and realized that it had been some 35 years ago -when she had competed in track and field in high school. “I was very good at it,” she shared. “I won almost every meet I entered and ended up highly ranked in New York State.” “I loved high jumping,” Curran-Villarreal said to her friend. “Man, I wish I could still do it and that there were track meets for adults!” 56 October 2014
Curran-Villarreal said her first track meet, in this century, was in June 2013. She was what is termed a “walk up” and remembers telling her husband and their boys when they arrived at the Masters track meet in Georgia, “I just want to check it out.” “Was I thinking I’d compete? No,” Curran-Villarreal said. “Did I wear shorts and a t-shirt just in case I got up the courage? I sure did.” Curran-Villarreal did end up competing, won her age division and has been hooked ever since. So far during the 2014 Outdoor Masters Track and Field season, she has jumped in ten track meets competing at the local, state, regional, national and just recently, international level winning a gold medal in the women’s high jump at the WMA NCCA Championships for the Americas in Costa Rica. “It’s been inspiring to meet Masters athletes of all ages (from 30-95 years old!) who are great examples of “staying in the game” at any age,” she said. The resident of Sibley Forest said the main difference she notices from her high school days is having to warm up a bit more. “Athletes of today are much more focused on technique, physiology and biomechanics than we were back in the 1970s,” she added. “Fortunately, I have found an excellent trainer here in East Cobb who has really helped me step up my game.” “It’s so exciting at this point in life to be doing something like this,” she said. “My family has been so excited and supportive, and my boys, especially, are loving seeing Mommy bring home the sports trophies and medals, just like they do,” said Curran-Villarreal. “It’s great to once again be able to compete in a sport I love.” Julia lives in East Cobb with her husband, Juan, and sons, Patrick (age 12) and Christian (age 9). She is a photographer, volunteers extensively in her community including for her children’s schools and Cobb County public safety and sings in the Mt. Bethel UMC choir.

Civitans Celebrate 23rd Annual East Cobb Wine & Vine Market The 23rd Annual Wine Tasting and Silent Auction hosted by the East Cobb Civitan Club (www.eastcobb. civitan.net) and benefitting the Friends for the East Cobb Park (www.eastcobbpark.org), will be held on October 16, at the Olde Towne Athletic Club at 6pm. Georgia’s Attorney General, Sam Olens and Cobb Commission Chair Tim Lee will serve as honorary co-chairs of this year’s event which is the largest fundraising activity for both the East Cobb Civitans and Friends for the East Cobb Park. To date, this “Wine & Vine Market” has raised over $141,000 for the East Cobb Park and well over $200,000 for local charities such as MUST Ministries, The Center for Family Resources, The Center for Children and Young Adults, as well as, Civitan’s Charities such as Camp Big Heart--a camp for children and young adults with special needs. The Civitans helped spearhead a program with the Georgia Ballet in offering a new “Dance Abilities” class for special needs students. It is
this annual fundraiser and other donations that provide financing for the special events that are held in the East Cobb Park such as Holiday Lights and Sunday Fundays and other seasonal events. Founded in 1986, the East Cobb Civitan Club is a 100% volunteer organization committed to community service. The Civitans meet twice a month (noon on the 2nd Thursday and dinner on the 4th Thursday) at the Olde Towne Athletic Club (4950 Olde Towne Parkway, Marietta) and welcome members of all races, religions and ages with a common desire to provide solutions to difficult situations. SENIORS Enrichment of Life Movement Celebrates 30th Anniversary Classes for Seniors Entering Fourth Decade By Josh Langston

With a broad smile and a wave of his hand, Marietta Mayor Steve “Thunder” Tumlin officially recognized ELM’s 30th Anniversary in a proclamation he personally delivered to the organization. ELM -- Enrichment of Life Movement -- is a non-denominational program open to anyone aged 50 and above. Mayor Tumlin marked the occasion at a luncheon on September 23 along with hundreds of ELM students, volunteers, instructors, and honored guests. The proclamation is one of a number of runups to a grand luncheon set for November 11th in celebration of ELM’s longevity. The catered affair will include presentation of the first-ever “Elmee” Awards in a program loosely patterned after the Oscars. Joe Turner, 2014 Magician of the Year, will serve as Master of Ceremonies, and music will be provided by the East Cobb New Horizons Band, an orchestra staffed by some of Cobb’s finest musicians. ELM, Cobb county’s oldest volunteer-run program for seniors, is entering its fourth decade of service. Though the organization is non-denominational, ELM’s classes have been hosted by the First United Methodist Church in Marietta since they began in the fall of 1984. In that time ELM has conducted more than 4,000 classes on over a hundred different subjects. Some of the most popular and consistent offerings include line dancing, painting, wood carving, current events, Shakespeare’s plays, creative writing, history, music, travel and a variety 60 October 2014

of games from bridge and dominoes to mahjong and canasta. Classes are taught by volunteer instructors whose enthusiasm and expertise bring students back for session after session, year after year. In addition to the regularly scheduled classes -- held on Tuesdays for eight consecutive weeks in the fall, winter and spring -- ELM also provides a bargain-priced hot lunch in a congenial atmosphere. Those attending are regularly treated to guest speakers with presentations on a wide range of topics. Originally sponsored by Cobb Senior Services and the Senior Citizen Council, ELM was created and staffed by volunteers and continues as an almost all-volunteer program today. With over 600 participants involved in each session, ELM is one of the most successful programs of its kind in the state. ELM proved to be popular from the very start when 30 instructors and two dozen additional volunteers offered classes for nearly 200 students and lunch for many of them. Initially offered in two Cobb county locations, classes were consolidated at First United Methodist Church in Marietta in the fall of 1986. In recent years, ELM has conducted 60 or more unique classes each session. ELM’s lunch program is prepared to handle as many as 275 diners and has proved to be a magnet for socializing. Rotary Club’s Dog Days Run Raises Over $67,000 For Local Charities
For 30 years the Rotary Club of East Cobb has supported numerous charitable causes and service projects on local, national, and international levels. The club, whose members represent a cross section of East Cobb’s business and professional community, once again successfully demonstrated their commitment to East Cobb through their organization of the 9th annual Dog Days 5K Run. “As our primary fundraiser, the Dog Days Run helps us to continue and to increase the good work of Rotary in our community,” said public relations director Christopher Mora. Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church served as the backdrop for the August 9th event, which saw over 529 runners lace up their sneakers and brave the sultry summer heat in support of the club’s widely recognized humanitarian efforts. The family friendly event, which was comprised of a 5K Road Race, 1 Mile Fun Run, Tot Trot and an array of other spirited festivities, raised a grand total of approximately $67,000. “This certainly surpassed our projected goal for the year, and will consequently allow us to provide more assistance to the
non-profit charities that we provide support to in Cobb County,” said Rotary Club president Randy Nixon. In addition to community involvement, all members of the East Cobb Rotary Club agreed that, the wellfortified partnerships between the Rotary Club and its sponsors are paramount in achieving this commendable profit each year. “Every year our 5K is a success because of the many volunteers whose contributions are instrumental in making the Dog Days race a huge success,” Randy Nixon says. WellStar (Hospice), kidz2leadersinc., Canine Assistance, Camp Kudzu, Cobb Family Resources, Brumby Elementary, Cobb YWCA, etc. are among some of the charities that have benefitted from the Dog Days 5k this year. Blazing though the 5k finish line first this year were runners Malcolm Campbell (16:21.3), Ryan Peck (16:49.6) and Troy Hickom (17:03.9).
