January 2015 3

PUBLISHER’S NOTE On December 31st many people make a list of things they are going to do to improve their lives. We say we are going to eat less and work out more. We are going to read every book reviewed by the New York Times. By the time you are reading this, all of your New Year's resolutions are most likely down the proverbial tubes. While you can't go back to December 31st and redo your resolutions, you can begin now to think about making resolutions that will not only help you, but help your community. How about resolving to volunteer at MUST Ministries? Maybe if you see people who appreciate being fed on a regular basis you may think twice before you eat a whole box of chocolates. How about spending your time laying sod, hammering nails, and painting trim for Habitat for Humanity? Take a look at our list of local non-profits highlighted in our annual “Do Good Guide” on pages 10-19 for ideas on how you can help those in need. Why should you spend your New Year's resolutions doing things that would help someone other than yourself? I believe we are responsible for the state of the community we live in and don't really have a right to complain and wait for "others" to do our civic responsibility. If people waited for someone else to stand up, speak out, and initiate social change, we would be living in the dark ages. We would still be under British rule, slavery would be the norm, and women wouldn't be able to show their ankles. Since others have created opportunities for us, it is only fair for us to return the favor and continue the cycle of positive community change. Speaking of civic responsibility, make a New Year’s resolution to spend more time updating yourself on who your Georgia state representative is (page 44) and letting them know what you think about bills they have to vote on. Page 38 features the zonings and variances that the East Cobb Civic association keeps an eye on for our benefit. Clubs and support groups (see pages 60 & 61 and 64) are also a great way to help others and serve our community, take a look at our monthly list to see how you can help or be helped. You still have time to turn your year around and resolve to do some things that really matter. The year is still young so don't waste your time lamenting over your broken resolutions. Pick up the EAST COBBER every month and read about your neighbors that are contributing to the quality of life in East Cobb. Hopefully, you’ll be inspired to get involved, too. Who knows, with all of your new activities, you may not have time to worry about your weight.

Stronger Together in 2015

As you reflect on 2014, do you remember your New Year’s Resolution? Most of us either break them, forget them or have given up on making them. What if instead of another broken resolution, you became a part of a fitness evolution. Instead of another broken commitment of working out and eating better, make a lifestyle change that involves mind, body and spirit.

are very knowledgeable, extremely friendly and great to work with. It’s like having a personal trainer, but with a great group of people to share your workout. In the 101 class, they helped me correct all my bad habits and made sure I had proper form, so I didn’t hurt myself. The workouts are fun and motivating, and I look forward to each one.”

Iron Tribe Fitness (ITF) in East Cobb invites you to stop failing alone and come be successful as they get “Stronger Together.” The tribe concept was created by a founder who couldn’t find the small group camaraderie he was looking for in a large gym. “Our goal is to build a tribe of people, athletes, coaches and owners who change lives for the better while having fun, learning and getting results,” says Andy Berman, ITF East Cobb leader and local resident.

Limiting membership to 300 participants allows for a close-knit community at Iron Tribe and quality control unsurpassed in the fitness industry. Coaches set quarterly goals with members and keep them on track by monitoring their progress. Iron Tribe has something for everyone—young, old, busy professionals, college athletes, working parents, fitness gurus and beginners. Any workout can be modified by the well-trained coaching staff to safely fit any person.

Iron Tribe exclusively offers small classes (maximum 20 participants per class led by two coaches), and they really focus on individual and group success. The classes include strength training, cardio and body weight movements. Coaches help members get a powerful workout in a short amount of time. All classes are 45 minutes long and include a warm-up, workout and cool-down. “This high intensity workout accomplished in less than an hour makes it perfect for even the busiest of lifestyles,” says Andy.

“We have husbands and wives, neighbors, families, church groups and co-workers who work out together and really encourage and support each other,” says Andy. “We also plan special events, like cookouts and holiday parties, that allow athletes to meet other members and promotes the sense of community and support.” In every workout, meeting, class and outside activity, Iron Tribe is working to get Stronger Together in all areas of life.

The tribe atmosphere promotes competition and pushes athletes to perform at a level that they would never achieve on their own. Being part of a small, close-knit community is crucial to achieving and maintaining fitness goals because it operates around accountability. Participants schedule their class for the day and it’s like making an appointment, which makes their fitness a priority. Classmates and coaches notice when someone misses and won’t allow anyone to fall through the cracks. All tribe members begin with a four-week 101 program. During 101, participants learn the movement fundamentals, proper nutrition and the science behind the results-based workouts. The coaches help each new participant set goals, offer recipes and tips to keep them focused on healthy eating, and keep them accountable by requiring the completion of the 101 program before beginning regular classes. New Iron Tribe East Cobb athlete Diane says, “I stumbled upon Iron Tribe after my gym closed. I was hesitant because I loved the coaching at my old place. The coaches at Iron Tribe

At the core of Iron Tribe East Cobb’s mission is giving back to two community based organizations creating national and international impact. First is Workout for Water that supports their partner, Neverthirst. These events across the country raise thousands of dollars to provide access to clean water in areas of the world such as Sudan, India and Cambodia. Second, ITF’s partnership with Team Red, White and Blue supports our veterans and wounded warriors. Annually, ITF East Cobb provides workouts locally driving awareness in support of these great causes. In January, ITF East Cobb will begin new 101 classes, and it’s the perfect opportunity to become part of something that will change your life. An ancient biblical truth states “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” Come join Iron Tribe. Come and get Stronger Together. The East Cobb County Council (ECCC) PTA created the Margie Hatfield Scholarship Fund in 1990 to honor the dedication and years of service given by Mrs. Hatfield to the youth of the Council. She is a past president of the organization and served three consecutive terms. It is with this service in mind that the ECCC PTA sponsors the scholarship program to help deserving youth in their educational journey. An emphasis is placed on the service records and citizenship of the winning applicants, since this embodies the philosophy of PTA. The Margie Hatfield Scholarship Fund will once again award up to six separate $1,000 scholarships; one student from each of the ECCC PTA high schools will be chosen. The following criteria, listed in order of significance, are used to evaluate applicants: involvement in service-oriented projects, community and extracurricular activities, leadership, honors and awards, an essay, references, completeness of application, and grade point average. Here are additional details about the scholarship: • Funds must be used for continuing education • Any graduating high school senior enrolling in a fulltime course of study at any institute of higher learning may apply • No limit to the number of students from each school that may apply • Applications must be postmarked no later than February 23, 2015. Winners will be notified by March 30. • Winners will be honored at the April 16 General Membership Meeting of the ECCC PTA. Families are invited to attend. East Cobb residents no longer have to wait for the outdoor art festival season to find those one-of-a-kind locally made treasures that we love. Just opened and located off the South Marietta Parkway is Marketplace 120, a 14,000-square foot gallery that houses an indoor art festival everyday. Ninety artists and artisans display their creative designs and wares, which include fine art, jewelry, home décor, re-purposed furniture, vintage items, handcrafted items and more.

Owner Karen Tapelband says she was inspired to create Marketplace 120 by the neighborhood art festivals around Atlanta. “Why not create a space where artists and artisans can sell their work all the time?” says Tapelband. Blending a business background with her weekend hobby of attending festivals, Tapelband meshed the two into Marketplace 120 where local work is sold on a daily basis.

Grades K-12 One-to-One Instruction Individualized Programs No Contracts

A dedicated team of employees helped Tapelband scout for premier local artists and artisans. The result is a store, vibrant with color and energy, that delivers a comfortable festival atmosphere, which is constantly changing with new pieces and displays. Beginning soon, many of the artists will offer classes in their respective arts and crafts. A private space is also available to reserve for community events. And to further support the community effort, Tapelband has a collaborative venture with the Art Career Mentoring Service at Kennesaw State University (KSU). She has donated one of her showroom spaces, named OTP Gallery (Outside the Perimeter), to KSU students, faculty and alumni for art exhibits that change monthly. If you are an art festival aficionado, make plans to drop by Marketplace 120, conveniently located at 562 Wylie Rd., Suite 24, which is just off South Marietta Parkway between I-75 and Cobb Parkway. The showroom is open Monday-Saturday from 10am7pm and on Sunday from 12-5pm. For more information, go to www.marketplace120.com or call (678) 540-7511.

DO GOOD GUIDE Make A New Year’s Resolution To Volunteer At the start of each new year, people make a list of things they are going to do to improve their lives. We say we are going to eat less and work out more. Think about making resolutions that will not only help you, but help your community. Volunteerism can take many forms. Whether you choose to spend time helping out at your local library, mentoring a child, or building a house, there are many nonprofit volunteer organizations that could really use your help. Or if your time is really in short supply, maybe you can donate the furniture, clothing and other household items that you no longer need. In addition to our local schools, synagogues and churches, here’s a sampling of some other local, non-profit organizations that are in need of volunteers, financial contributions and/or miscellaneous donations. DO GOOD GUIDE Walton App Development and Software Programming Club Members Inspire Brumby Students By EJ Ozyazgan The success of creating a collaborative computer science environment at the high school level encouraged the club’s founder, Sanket Mehta, to look beyond Walton High School. “We’ve always been encouraged by parents and teachers to do whatever we love. We wanted to help other parts of the community by enabling students to explore new ideas,” Mehta said. To achieve this goal of promoting STEM awareness, WASP teamed with Brumby Elementary School’s afterschool program to hold basic Java classes for third, fourth, and fifth graders on Thursdays. “They were very supportive. From logistics to paperwork, the Brumby staff backed us all the way,” states Mehta. The purpose of these classes is two-fold: first, to give children the skills to succeed in computer classes in middle school and high school, and second, to spark an interest in STEM that they will keep throughout their lives. Many students at Brumby lack the resources to explore STEM on their own time. For these students, WASP is a gateway into the world of scientific learning and exploration, an increasingly important field in modern society.

ss Sanket Mehta, founder and co-President of WASP, shows Brumby students how to compile the Java program.

Most high schoolers spend their Thursday evenings crouched over books or in front of laptop screens, studying for school assessments the next day. For students from Walton App Development and Software Programming Club (WASP), Thursday evenings mean taking part in their favorite project of helping others learn. Every week, WASP members travel to Brumby Elementary School to teach computer programming. WASP members aim to create an interest for computer science and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) in children from all backgrounds. WASP focuses on inspiring students to learn more about computer programming. More than thirty high school students from Walton High School convene during Friday afterschool meetings and collaborate on projects that use Java, a universal computer programming. Members work on projects at basic and advanced levels, also learning about writing their own Android smartphone apps or computer games. www.eastcobber.com

WASP club members have to ensure their lesson plans are interesting enough to keep the children’s attention. In order to do this, WASP members also use Scratch, a tool developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Scratch allows students to program a kitten’s behavior by simply dragging and dropping code blocks. WASP members help draw relations between the text students type in Java and the blocks students play with in Scratch, so that it is easier for elementary school students to understand programming. “We don’t want to confuse them or turn them off to computer science. Finding the right balance between graphics and Java is key,” said Mr. Hubbard, the Walton High School teacher who sponsors WASP. WASP’s efforts to encourage students from underprivileged areas to explore STEM have been successful. Students at Brumby know how to write their own operation programs, print information onto the computer screen, and store information in different types of variables. Over the next few months, WASP hopes to expand its programs at other local schools and continue promoting STEM education in the Cobb community. EJ Ozyazgan is a Junior at Walton High School. He is a member of the Walton App Development and Software Programming Club.

VolunteerMatch.com Can Help You Help Others What’s your excuse for not getting involved? Not enough time? No skills or experience you think could help anyone? Nothing nearby? If you had information on thousands of non-profit agencies looking for volunteers anywhere nationwide and also were able to choose how much time to spend, the type of cause you want to support, and set your own hours for volunteering, it would be hard to find a reason not to volunteer, wouldn’t it? No more excuses. DO GOOD GUIDE East Cobber Finds Fulfillment Volunteering at WellStar East Cobb Health Park

ss WellStar volunteer Mary Hagan

Volunteers at the new WellStar East Cobb Health Park are helping carry out the notfor-profit organization’s mission to provide world-class care in the community. Volunteers work closely with WellStar team members to ensure patients have a seamless visit to East Cobb Health Park from the minute they arrive.

The Health Park serves as a comprehensive, onestop shop for outpatient medical needs and includes a range of healthcare services including primary care and specialty physicians’ offices, urgent care and diagnostics. The 162,000 square-foot facility experiences a high volume of patients walking through the doors each day, and that’s where the volunteers come in. “I kind of enjoy it because it’s pretty busy,” said Mary Hagan, a WellStar East Cobb Health Park volunteer. “I show patients where the imaging center is and the lab.”

Volunteers perform a variety of tasks around the Health Park such as greeting patients, helping them navigate the building and assisting them when discharged. Mary said it’s a great place to volunteer and encouraged others to look into volunteering for WellStar. “If you like working with people and feel like you’re helping them, you get a feeling of satisfaction,” she said. ABOUT THE HEALTH PARK WellStar East Cobb Health Park was created to bring WellStar’s primary and specialty physician offices together as a one-stop shop for outpatient medical needs. The facility is complete with diagnostics, laboratory services, rehabilitation therapy, urgent care and a retail pharmacy among other services. These services will be integrated with a multi-specialty mix of physicians to include a strong foundation of primary care physicians: family physicians, internal medicine, pediatrics and OB/GYN services and specialists will include cardiologists, pulmonologists, ENT, neurosurgery, pain management, chiropractic care, vascular surgery, general surgery, allergy/asthma, endocrinology, urology and orthopedics. Mary began volunteering at WellStar Kennestone Hospital when she retired in 2006 after 28 years with the Boy Scouts of America. She enjoyed her time assisting patients at the hospital for eight years, taking some time off for two separate knee replacement surgeries at the very place she volunteered.

WellStar has many volunteer positions available to become a volunteer for WellStar Health System:

As Mary recovered from her second surgery earlier this year, she watched the construction on the new WellStar East Cobb Health Park – just minutes from her home – and decided to join the team. With fully recovered knees, Mary works as a customer relations volunteer, greeting people in the sunlit lobby, helping patients find their way and answering phones.

Pope Grad Publishes Book and Starts Scholarship Fund In 2006, Ryan Neumann was a brand new teacher, eager to change the world but unsure how he was actually going to do it. In 2009, he created a blog (neumannictimes.com), and began documenting his life as a teacher (he taught at South Cobb High School and Pope High School). Through reflective inquiry, he discovered that he could positively affect the lives ss Author, Ryan Neumann of others by teaching and writing. His first book, titled What Had Happened: a work of friction (Amazon Books; $13.50), is the result of his efforts to communicate how it feels to be a teacher, in and out of the classroom. In 2013, Neumann was recognized at the National Council of Teachers of English conference, where he was given the James N. Britton award for What Had Happened. Ryan has decided to donate all royalty payments received from selling his book, to the What Had Happened Scholarship fund. Says Ryan, “I grew up in East Cobb County. . . went to elementary school, middle school, and high school here. And ya know, as a kid and teenager, I took a lot from the place that raised me. So, coming back to Pope as a teacher seems like a very unique opportunity. Every day, there’s a chance to give

back and make the home I’ve grown to know a better place. With the whole, “pay for a student’s entire college tuition,” I feel like that would be the ultimate way to give back. . . by giving someone else the same opportunity I was given.” At the beginning of every month, he posts a brief message to his blog detailing progress made towards the ultimate goal of $31,292.00 (6,258.4 book sales). Once the goal is reached, a scholarship selection committee will be founded, and an application form will be created collaboratively and be made available (via this blog) to any student graduating from the two high schools he has taught at (Pope High School or South Cobb High School). He hopes he can raise enough money to provide one student from each school with a full scholarship. While the parameters for both the committee and scholarship application form have yet to be determined, the ultimate goal is to work with a diverse representation of the community that is Cobb, and collectively, choose a student that does not represent a specific neighborhood of Cobb, but rather, the county as a whole. If you’d like to help Ryan affect, positive change in the world of education, buy a copy of What Had Happened on Amazon.com or visit his blog to discover the other online stores that carry his book.

A Very Merry East Cobb Christmas Party On Wednesday, December 10, the "Godfather", Don Jenacova, his "underboss", Oliver Halle, and members and associates of the Jenacova Disorganized crime family hosted their 12th annual Christmas party at the McCleskey East Cobb YMCA. East Cobb buddies Oliver and Don invited their YMCA friends, local politicians and network of well-wishers --otherwise known as their "Disorganized crime family"--to their annual gathering. "This was a great opportunity for everyone attending to meet their elected officials on the federal, state and local levels, and for them [the politicians] to thank our guests for their support," joked Oliver Halle.

McCleskey-East Cobb YMCA Celebrates 25 Years By Elizabeth G. Wentz

Meet me at the Y. Soccer Saturdays at the Y. Healthy Kids Day at the Y. Weekly workouts with neighbors at the Y. For thousands of East Cobbers, these activities are a regular part of their routine. The McCleskey-East Cobb YMCA has been a fixture of the East Cobb lifestyle for longer than many residents in our community can remember.

and East Piedmont Roads. At just 1,200 square feet, the Sprayberry Crossing facility was only a place for administrative tasks. Organized activities took place in borrowed spaces around town like churches and parks. McCleskey remembers vividly the disappointment that met residents who were familiar with “the Y lifestyle” when they arrived at the facility.

But there are neighbors who do remember life before the Y was built at the corner of Roswell and East Piedmont roads. In fact, before the Y was built, East Piedmont was just a gravel road, according to Tom McCleskey, the first director of the Y bearing his name.

"They would pile the family in the car to go the YMCA, and couldn’t believe it when they pulled up to find a building with only desks," McCleskey said.

The East Cobb YMCA, christened the McCleskeyEast Cobb YMCA in 2005 when Tom McCleskey retired, was built to fulfill a need for a family-friendly community center in rapidly growing East Cobb County. Though the Y has had a presence in Cobb County since 1954, it wasn’t until 1983 that they moved from the location on Highway 41 to a temporary administrative facility in Sprayberry Crossing, near the intersection of Sandy Plains

To fulfill the need of creating a functioning YMCA in East Cobb, a massive fundraising campaign had to take place. The cost of the East Cobb YMCA was $6 million, of which $2.5 million was raised, the largest fundraising effort in Cobb County at that time. McCleskey credits three East Cobb individuals with seeing the project to fruition – Earl Smith, the former chairman of the Cobb County Commission; Jack Demerest, formerly of First Atlanta Bank; and Barbara Williams, a former State Farm Agent who has served on the Cobb County

Commission and as a board member at the Cobb Galleria Authority. “If those three people didn’t step forward, (the Y) would never have been built,” McCleskey said. The YMCA was built on land acquired from East Cobber Robert Moon, who lived off of Roswell Road until his death in the early 1990s. The original building opened in April 1989. Though the original structure has remained largely unchanged, two major renovations have added group exercise areas, climbing walls, playground equipment and childcare spaces. Three years ago the purchase of the adjacent eight acre Hembree Farm allowed for expansion of the soccer fields and parking as well as room for future growth. According to McCleskey, the original vision was to establish a "Main Street" type of gathering place where residents could congregate, hold meetings, participate in a healthy lifestyle and develop roots in the community. Twenty-five years later, that community-building mission is still a primary focus at the Y.

“The Y is a cornerstone of all of the development in East Cobb,” said Becky Shipley, executive director of the McCleskey-East Cobb and Northeast Cobb YMCAs. In addition to organized sports, group exercise and fitness opportunities, Shipley said the activities of the Y transition based on the needs of the current community. For 2015, community activities will include sports leagues, Healthy Kids Day, the Halloween Spectacular, Cookies with Santa, Middle School nights and the creation of a Teen Leadership Board, where local youth can become involved in government and civic activities. The McCleskey-East Cobb YMCA serves 12,000 members/3,000 families. A family membership costs $84 and includes two parents, one grandparent and all the children in the family. During the month of January, the $99 admission fee will be waived. Shipley said that no family is ever turned away because of financial reasons and a sliding scaled based on income is available. Bird Day Camp Guide

Making a Good Day Camp Decision For Your Child

If you’re a parent considering summer camp opportunities for your child, you might consider a day camp rather than (or in addition to) a sleepaway camp experience. Parents often view sending their kids to day camps as a “stepping stone” to overnight camp. They might think day camps are for “younger kids” and sleepaway camps are for older ones. In some cases this might be true, but not always. One of the advantages you have as a parent when comparing day camps to overnight camps (or even day camps to day camps) is that a day camp’s customer base is generally restricted to its local geographical area. This makes things easier for you to learn more about the camp. For example, you can contact the camp’s current or former customers for references, and you can even visit the camp before making a decision. So how do you know you’re picking the right day camp for your child? Here’s a three-point checklist to help ensure the day camp you choose is the right one for your child. 1. Check references. Since day camps primarily serve local customers, it should not be difficult to find a few families who’ve attended the camp before. Talk to them about their impressions of the program. If you hear good things, you might have a winner. Mixed reviews, on the other hand, could be a “red flag” alerting you

to research the camp further. But if everyone you speak with has only negative things to say, then rule that day camp out, pat yourself on the back for taking the time to conduct a thorough investigation and keep looking for a different camp. 2. Involve your child in the decision making process. Research shows that kids enjoy camp more when they’re included in the decision-making process. Since there are so many different types of day camps to choose from, it’s important to match your child’s interests and personality with the activities the day camp offers. Accordingly, it’s advisable to take a tour of the camp and/or attend an open house together with your child. After you’ve toured the camp, ask for your child’s opinion. This can be a much better approach than unilaterally deciding which day camp your child will attend without consulting them ahead of time, as asking for their input means they’ll probably have a more positive camp experience in the end. 3. Tour the camp and meet the staff. Most day camps hold open houses or organized facility tours during the prime camp enrollment season (generally springtime). These events are great opportunities for you to meet the staff, ask questions and see how the camp operates on a day-to-day basis. You might even decide to attend several camps’ open houses for a point of comparison and to see where you get the best “vibe.” Attending a day camp open house or touring the facility is the single BEST way to see what you’re getting into ahead of time. Camp is such a personal experience. You want your child to connect with his or her counselors on a personal level and admire them as leaders and role models. You owe it to yourself and your child to pick a day camp that your child will look back on later in life and say, “I remember that camp, and it was the best experience of my life!” Your child deserves the best. It’s your responsibility as a parent to put him or her in an environment where they can thrive, and choosing the right day camp can make this happen for you. Happy day camping!

Financial Peace University Program Offered at Local Churches Financial Peace University (FPU), the 9-week program taught by Dave Ramsey, has helped more than one million families positively change their financial future. This life-changing program teaches families and individuals how to handle their money through common-sense principles and small group accountability. FPU is available for churches, companies, military bases, financial literacy programs, Spanish speaking organizations and community groups. As they work on a Total Money Makeover, the average family pays off $5,300 in debt and saves $2,700 in the first 91 days after beginning FPU and is completely out of debt, except for the mortgage, in 18 to 24 months. “We’ve actually relieved ourselves of over $50,000 worth of debt in two years just from using these principles,” said Russ Lee, former FPU participant. Dave Ramsey began teaching FPU classes in 1994 every night around Nashville, Tennessee. In 1997, FPU was made available on video across the country with thousands of classes around the nation today. The program is made up of 9 life-changing lessons taught by Dave on DVD in a fun and entertaining way. “I like to put the cookies on the shelf where everyone can reach them,” says Ramsey. After each lesson, the group meets to help each other plan budgets, discuss successes and temptations, and support each other in their journey to beat debt and build wealth. Topics covered include: • Saving for emergencies

“FPU classes are changing lives across the country every day,” says Louis Falzetti, executive vice president of Financial Peace University. “There is something for everyone in this program whether you are barely making ends meet, just trying to plan for retirement, or seeking to build wealth. No matter what your financial situation, you will find FPU to be the best motivational tool available across the nation to help you attain financial peace.” The first lesson is free! All you need to do is register to attend. If you want to continue, the cost is around $100 including materials. Zentangle Teacher Introduces Benefits of New Art Form

ss Alyss Amster

After 25 years in medical sales, East Cobber Alyss Amster wanted a change. Passionate about creativity and helping others, she became a Certified Zentangle Teacher and began teaching the Zentangle® Method. Created by Maria Thomas and Rick Roberts, the Zentangle Method is an easyto-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns.

The Zentangle method was created by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas on the East Coast, and Rick and Maria certify certify instructors such as Alyss Amster to teach their trademarked method of creating beautiful images from repetitive patterns while achieving a sense of mindfulness. Zentangle tiles are completed with Pigma Micron pens, and erasers are not used because there are no “mistakes.” There are “unintended marks,” and students are taught to embrace them and work those into their designs. It’s all very uplifting and relaxing. Completed tiles often look very complex, but all the designs are created following a series of basic steps. So, those studying the Zentangle method quickly are able to pick up the skills necessary to create an impressive tile. “That’s the positive part about this,” said Alyss. “Everyone can be successful. Everyone walks out an artist. It’s very empowering.” No special skills or previous art experience are necessary to create beautiful Zentangle images, and the simple tools – pen, paper and ink – it requires are inexpensive, readily available and portable. The Zentangle creators www.eastcobber.com

believe that it teaches some valuable truths that apply equally to art and to life, including that “anything is possible one stroke at a time,” and that we create a life the way we create art: “deliberately and consciously.” For Alyss, as well as her zentagle students, it’s a meditative art form that relaxes, relieves stress, and fosters creativity. Unlike other art forms, Zentangle is about the process. There are no expectations, no planned outcomes, and most importantly, no such thing as a mistake! Nothing gratifies Alyss more than watching students create works of art they never thought possible. And her students are hooked. Some take classes for relaxation, others to relieve stress and take their minds off their problems. A student with a family history of dementia likes the brain training it provides. One ADHD student says Zentangle is the only thing that helps her focus. A stroke survivor says it improves eye-hand coordination. One of the greatest compliments Alyss received was asked by a stroke victim’s spouse to speak and teach at Emory's stroke survivors club. “Zentangle is very different, and should catch the eye of people who like different types of craft activities. Anyone, from young pre-teens to adults of all ages, can do it and I hope they will be adventurous enough to give it a try and then share what they’ve learned with family and friends,” Alyss added. Alyss will be teaching Zentagle January 16 to March 6, at the East Cobb Senior Center, 3332 Sandy Plains Road in Marietta/East Cobb 30066. Call the East Cobb Senior Center for registration and more details at 770-5094900. From January 26 to March 9, Alyss will be teaching at The Art Place-Mountain View located at 3330 Sandy Plains Road in Marietta/East Cobb 30066. DINING GUIDE Happy Brew Year! By Dana diLorenzo

ss Kent Dalton & Marisa Pruss enjoy making their own beer.

Ringing in the New Year often means trying out new things. Need something hip, cool, trendy and well, tasty to add to your list? How about brewing your own beer? Craft beers are to beer buffs what hard-to-find seasonally flavored coffees are to coffee connoisseurs. Once you have the ‘good stuff’ there’s just no going back to the mass-produced libations.

Craft beer making is indeed a "craft" a masterful mixing of top quality ingredients, fastidious attention to detail and careful timing, all while personalizing the brew to please the most discriminating of palettes. Craft beers, also known as microbrews are made locally and in smaller batches with more interesting flavor profiles. Craft beer types include Amber (toasted malt flavor), Pale Ale (slightly bitter with some malt), IPA or India Pale Ale (more alcohol), Lagers & Pilsners (very little bitterness, more floral essence), Stouts & Porters (deep roasted malts, sweet with coffee or chocolate flavoring), Wheats (fruity and bubbly), Lambics (sweet) and Cider (apple or pear fermented drink, not a beer). Many craft beer brewers liken home brewing to merely following a recipe and that it’s as easy as baking. Just like most baking recipes are detailed, so are beer recipes. First and foremost, extreme sanitary measures are a mandate. Everything that touches the beer has to be thoroughly sanitized. The brew can burn or boil over so a keen eye must be kept on the brew during the entire process. East Cobb residents and neighbors Marisa Pruss and Kent Dalton (and a few other folks from the

GET IN TOUCH! 42 January 2015

neighborhood) have brewed together for several years. They began brewing for similar reasons, approximately 20 years ago, there weren’t a lot of good beers readily available and they discovered that they could brew really good beer with very little financial output. It quickly became a hobby for the group; spending 5-6 hours of total work over a period of 3-4 weeks netting great tasting brews that have been served at parties, weddings and all along the back decks of their neighborhood. East Cobb has a few brewclubs that meet to discuss their recipes on a regular basis at Brewmasters Warehouse (where they also can get their home brewing supplies or sign up for a brewing class) or at the family-friendly Hoof and Ale Restaurant (where they can sample microbrews and munch on the signature Clayton Burger made of angus beef, pimento cheese, house pickles, crispy shallots). Grab and go microbrew lovers, can visit the Craft Beer Factory for a growler or torpedo filled with favorite, hard-tofind microbrews. As if saving money and making your own special brew wasn’t incentive enough, many brewers believe the folklore that one can imbibe more homebrew (than commercial beers) without the risk of that pesky hangover because of the B vitamins that come from the yeast in the homebrew. Happy Brew Year East Cobbers! As a life-long resident of East Cobb, Dana diLorenzo is proud to be a contributing writer for EAST COBBER. She has written marketing copy for Fortune 500 companies and contributed articles to various regional publications. Dana was selected to represent the state of Georgia at the Cooper Tires Super Mom Drive & Ride where she happily accepted the “Driving Miss Daisy” award as the slowest, yet safest driver in the group. She has also written for major hotel chains as a Travel Mom. When she’s not working on a writing assignment, you can find Dana and husband Rick at a local baseball field, swim team meet or basketball game cheering on their sons Clark and Connor.

Happy Ending for Young Cancer Patient No parent wants to hear these four words, “Your son has cancer.” For Kim and Fred Bishop, this news was delivered shortly after their only child Knox’s second birthday. Kim had a mother’s intuition that something wasn’t right with her son. “I took him to numerous specialists without any resolution. After our ss Fred, Knox and Kim Bishop pediatrician ordered an MRI, we were told the unimaginable; Knox had a rare spinal tumor called neuro-epithelial,” recalled Kim. This type of cancer has abnormal cells wrapped around normal cells, which makes removal nearly impossible.

At the time of his diagnosis, Knox attended Ray Thomas Memorial Preschool Mother’s Morning Out program, but after the diagnosis, Kim and Fred decided to take him out of the program to keep him healthy. Kim, thankful to be a stay-at-home mom, dedicated her time to Knox’s physical care and his educational development.

Knox’s brave battle included a seven-hour spinal surgery and 11 months of chemotherapy, which was completed this past June. According to Kim, the tumor will always be there, but the chemo has kept it from metastasizing. Knox currently is in remission and back in preschool. He will continue to be monitored and receive periodic MRIs.

Kim grew up in East Cobb and attended Walton High School. Fred grew up in south Georgia. They both have tremendous faith, and it’s that faith that has seen them through the darkest of days. “We have seen His work and grace upon our family as Knox is healthy and thriving,” said Kim. Now, three years-old, Knox received the honor of serving as the marshal for the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) Christmas parade this past December. “We were so humbled and grateful that our little boy was chosen to represent all the children at CHOA who fight with bravery and courage. Knox’s story is one of hope, faith and love!” exclaimed Kim. Kim has dedicated herself to advocating for pediatric cancer patients and works with organizations such as CURE Children’s Cancer (www.curechildhoodcancer. org) and CHOA, both non-profit organizations. Phillip Edwards, managing partner, came to Just Fitness 4U – East Cobb in 2008 when it was a small gym with minimal equipment and a $10 a month rate. As members expressed their desires for expansion, Phillip and his staff listened and acted. “Unlike large corporate gyms that have to comply with corporate directives, we see ourselves as a neighborhood gym that cares,” explains Edwards. “We want our members to feel at home in an environment that combines cutting-edge fitness technology with personal attention; everyone is an individual to us. As we have grown, most of our membership has come from our customers’ family and friends.”

Any of these afflictions may be caused by displacement of spinal vertebrae which interrupts the flow of nerve impulses to organ and limbs. Chiropractic correction of this condition restores health in a great many cases.

HEALTH & WELLNESS Flu Advice From Cobb & Douglas Public Health Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness. Serious outcomes of flu infection can result in hospitalization or death. Some people, such as older people, young children, and people with certain health conditions, are at high risk for serious flu complications. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting vaccinated each year. Cobb & Douglas Public Health (CDPH) offers annual flu vaccines to everyone six months and older at the Acworth, Douglasville, East Cobb and Marietta Public Health Center locations. Appointments are not required to receive the flu vaccine and the cost is $25. Local businesses and community events for groups of 20 or more people who are interested in having flu vaccines administered should call Lisa Shadrix at 770-514-2307. This season’s flu vaccine will protect against the influenza viruses that research indicates will be most common during the season. This includes an influenza A (H1N1) virus, an influenza A (H3N2) virus, and one or two influenza B viruses, depending on the flu vaccine. The flu is different from a cold. The flu usually comes on suddenly. People who have the flu often feel some or all of these symptoms:

• Fever* or feeling feverish/chills • Cough • Sore throat • Runny or stuffy nose • Muscle or body aches • Headaches • Fatigue (tiredness) • Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults. * It’s important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever. In addition to the flu vaccine, CDPH also recommends pneumonia shots for persons over 65 years old, or anyone with a chronic illness or weakened immune system. Medicare pays for the flu and pneumonia vaccines. The shingles vaccine is also recommended for anyone over 60 years of age. While you are getting your flu shot, be sure to ask your provider if you are up to date on your Tetanus vaccinations. In addition to vaccination, individuals can also reduce the risk of getting the flu by following a few simple steps: • Wash your hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand cleanser • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth • Stay home when you are sick and keep sick children home • Do not share eating utensils, drinking glasses, towels or other personal items • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then put used tissues in the trash and wash your hands. If you do not have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your sleeve. For more information: visit cobbanddouglaspublichealth.com/influenza or call Cobb & Douglas Public Health at 770-514-2300.

Mt. Zion Music Minister Honors Wife with Book

ss Author, Robert "Bob" Fraumann

Robert “Bob” Fraumann, the Minister of Music at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in East Cobb has published a book celebrating his wife’s life and how she lived with God after her recovery from polio at the age of 12. Bob tells the unique story of his wife’s life in his book, “God’s Blessed Angel,” published by Yawn’s Books & More, based in Canton, GA.

The book begins when Jan, from Columbus, GA, was 12 years old and contracted polio when no cure was available. Her left side was paralyzed, and the doctors were considering putting her in an iron lung. Jan heard the doctors telling her parents this in the hallway of the hospital while she was in isolation at night time. They said she would never be normal, be able to walk or have children. She prayed to God to heal her, and said she would give her life to Him if He would do so. She was completely healed and she did give her life to Him. For 62 years, she sang, taught Bible studies and supported her husband in music ministry. “She lived an incredibly, wonderful and fulfilled life,” says Bob. It took several months for the healing, so she was placed in a private school where she progressed as fast as she learned. She completed 10-12th grades at age 15. Jan went to Asbury University in KY (1954-1958) where she and Bob met and got married at age 18, and when she was 19, she was teaching 9th grade, helping to put Bob

through graduate school at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ. (1958-1960). One of the chapters in the book is devoted to Jan’s dating. She had 30 qualifications for the man she would marry and would check them after each date. Interestingly, she was proposed to three times before Bob. Bob said he somehow qualified! “This a great list for anyone who is dating, “ says Bob. Another section of the book highlights conversations Janice has with God, where Bob said she wrote both sides of the conversations in her journal. She wrote 300 pages of conversations with God over a 16-year period, Fraumann said. Seventeen 5x7” “frameable blessings” are printed in the book. “God’s Blessed Angel” also includes six chapters on Jewish traditions that Fraumann said honor Janice’s interest in the blessings of the Old Testament, which Christians can apply to their lives. Her exciting life of 75 years ended in 2013, but Janice survived through polio at age 12 and cancer at age 65. Even after her leg was amputated from the cancer, she never lost her faith, Fraumann said. They have two children, Rick (graduate of Walton High School) and Greg (graduate of Lassiter High School), four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, with another one on the way. The book “God’s Blessed Angel” is available at Yawn’s Books & More, in Canton, or online at bobfrauman.com, yawnspublishing.com, amazon. com and barnesandnoble. com.

WHAT’S YOUR STORY? It’s such a basic question, but one that most businesses struggle to answer … much less communicate clearly. But in today’s age of endless marketing messages competing for a very short attention span, clearly communicating your “story” is an absolute imperative. Articulating and embracing your brand story is what makes it happen. Dermatology Affiliates Welcomes Dr. Abbott to East Cobb

Dr. Abbott has always felt at home in two worlds, the world of science and the world of art. It’s part of what draws her to the field of dermatology, where you need both skills to bring out healthy and beautiful skin. “I feel like all my life I have been trying to combine those two,” Dr. Abbott says.

“In college I majored in both art and biology. I got my master’s in Medical Illustration and I did a fellowship in Cosmetic Dermatology. I am a very visual person. Any treatment that I do for a patient, I would want to be aesthetically pleasing.” The visual appeal may have been what started Dr. Abbott’s interest in dermatology. But what keeps her going is the variety of people she gets to help.
