SELECTING THE RIGHT LAWYER Hopefully you never need the services of a motorcycle injury attorney, BUT if you ever do, unless you are represented by an attorney experienced in this complicated area of the law, you will be at a distinct disadvantage when having to deal with an insurance company or insurance company attorneys. Over the years we have we have recovered substantial amounts of money for our clients in counties throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey. We have references and our clients overwhelmingly say they are happy with our services. Results are important and examples of our injury recoveries include:

After the hot and wet summer that we had, with many events being rained out especially in August, the cool temperatures of October are welcome relief. I always enjoy riding at this time of year and enjoy getting away some time alone and to enjoy the beautiful colors of autumn. I hope that with all of the events that are happening this month you will get out and enjoy it too. It’s still not time to cover the bike or put it in the garage, there is plenty of riding to do and plenty of events to attend. As always at this time of year I want to take a moment to remind you that the falling leaves of autumn present a special hazard to the motorcyclist. Damp leaves on the road can cause accidents so please be careful and enjoy the ride, but always be aware of the road and the hazards you might find. I want to correct a statement in my September editorial. It seems that I said we were “celebrating” the 10th Anniversary of attack on the Twin Towers in New York City. What I should have said is that we were Remembering the attack on that tragic day. There is no cause for celebration of this event but we should remember what happened and honor all the lives that were lost. I think I have a solution to fooling the weatherman with all the weekend rain we’ve had this year. It seems that the worst of the rain always happens on weekends so let’s just change the days that we use for weekends to Wednesday & Thursday. By making these our new weekends the rain will continue on Saturday & Sunday and we’ll have nice weather for our days off. But don’t anyone tell the weathermen that we’re doing this so they can’t mess up our new weekend days. Seriously, we are in a weather-driven industry and at the mercy of the elements. All I can suggest is that when we have a nice weekend that you take advantage of it and get in as much riding as you can and as always ... Please ride safe!

Lawn Fire Co. Biker Breakfast the breakfast. When we were ready to go I asked at the greeting table who ran the breakfast and I was told a guy named Matt Beare. So I contacted Matt and he gave me the following information to pass on.

My son Jason and my Friend DJ Rich this year have met every Sunday morning to go for a poker run or a breakfast ride (unless the weather is bad). So at one of the poker runs we were at someone suggested we do the Lawn Biker Breakfast. What a memorable experience it turned out to be! We arrived around 7:30am and the Fire Police where parking the bikes on the first lot that was already almost filled. When the lots are filled they continue parking in the grass and give you a kickstand plate. Next we saw signs telling you where to go and we saw the line already starting to form. We got to the table and it was like clockwork. They greeted you and took the money and explained what to do. We got to the bar and this is what we saw ... pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, home fries, sausage gravy, biscuits, toast, baked oatmeal, fruit, pastries, coffee and juice. Then you find a seat and dig in. They have two areas that are covered to eat under and lots of picnic tables were set up. You sit with other bikers and talk about “Biker Stuff!” When done, they have a station set up to put your tray and dishes to be washed, I like the set up. Now I was ready to check out the vendors, who are located around the eating area, after that it was time to check out the bikes. I was overwhelmed by the number of bikes and styles. You can find everythng from mopeds and scooters to Boss Hoss’s and trikes. You could spend hours checking out the hundreds of bikes that are at

The Lawn Fire Company Biker Breakfast is held every 3rd Sunday from May-September. The first Biker Breakfast was in April of 2004 and there were about 60 people there. That year they did seven breakfasts and served a total of 525 guests. In 2005 they served 2,710 from April – October and in 2006 they served 4,532 from May – September. Every year saw an increase to where they are now severing over 7,000 breakfasts over the summer event. WOW ... that’s a lot of bacon and eggs! Just for the record! This year they had a record day on Father’s Day in June they served 2,005 hungry bikers on that day alone. I know, I was there for the record. So for the Total served since they started in 2004 to now: they had 44 breakfasts totaling 36,823 hungry bikers fed! That’s an incredible amount of work over the years. They’ve had bikers come from New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, New York and of course from all over Pennsylvania. Proceeds go into the Facility account for the Lawn Fire Company where they had to use over $70,000.00 for renovations to keep up with the growing guest counts. That’s an investment that paid off. So if you’re thinking about doing the biker breakfast, I have some numbers for you to think about. It takes them over 100 hours to prep for the current total guests. This year they served 7,642 hungry bikers and we consumed a total of 3,600 pounds of home fries, 24,800 eggs, 2,300 pounds of bacon, 870 pounds of sausage, 783 pounds of ham, 198 gallons of white milk, 218 gallons of chocolate milk, 58 watermelons and 87 cantaloupes! Now that’s a lot of food to inventory and prepare. So if you didn’t get a chance to attend this years biker breakfast at the Lawn Fire Company on route 241 between Elizabethtown and Mount Gretna, put it on your calendar for 2012. I hope to see you there. Ride Safe Wayne Hoffman AKA “Huffy the Clown”

Biker Event Defies Hurricane Irene It all started with a simple idea. Build an annual charity event. The twist was this event was going to be done in a non traditional manner. This event would not be run by a single group. This event would be put together by and run by a conglomerate of people in the motorcycle community. From the start the word of this event trickled down thru the M.C.s and Motorcycle Associations as well as the vendors. The ranks started to build as the weeks went on. Even though we all were from different groups we all had the same goal, to make this a quality event and to honor the riders and the bikes they ride. We wanted to take it past the proverbial wave when passing on the tarmac we all love so much… and that is exactly what happened. As time marched on into the final weeks of planning everything fell into place, all the hard work and dedication made this very real. Nothing was going to stop this show from happening, not even Hurricane Irene. Come the morning of the show (the day Hurricane Irene was going to turn us upside down) it happened and the bikes started rolling in! Even the threat of high winds and torrential rain couldn’t keep people away. The show opened up with the march of the Allentown Post, Marine Corp Color Guard, a blessing from the Biker Church and the raising of banners from participating clubs. The tables began to be filled with bike parts, apparel and support gear as the smell of food cooking, the sounds of music and the gathering of good people arriving. It was a beautiful thing and all for a great cause, the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. A special “Thank You” goes out to all that attended as well as all that made this event real. We’d also like to thank Jake’s Flea Market, The Biker Church, Legion Riders, Leatherneck M.C., Wheels Of Soul M.C., Barrio Riders M.C., Freedom Riders M.C., Leather and Lace M.C., and Lehigh Valley A.B.A.T.E. as well as all the Vendors. I hope to see you next year for the 2nd Annual Jakes Motorcyclists Recognition Day! Story and photo’s by Jimmy Lenz Barrio Riders M.C.

Munster Mayhem, Spooky set of wheels Great bike makes a scary delight Photos by Norm Keller; Story by Loretta Jackson

The jingle of chains and the fragrance of black leather fill the night as the lovely but lethal Debbie D, and her hellish consort, Butch Patrick — the original “Eddie Munster” of classic television fame — cavorts about the graveyard. The pair makes their mischief aboard the “Eddie” bike, a vision of chrome, paint and engine power drawn like a vampire’s snack from the bike’s massive, Harley-Davidson 80 c.i. Evo engine. The motorcycle is a 2008 custom from USA Choppers (www.usachoppers1.com). It was crafted for Patrick’s friend, Jeff, a longtime rider and avid Munsters fan who is a general contractor from Livingston, New Jersey. Butch Patrick, currently a Los Angeles resident, starred in the mid-1960s as Eddie Munster, alongside Yvonne De Carlo (Lily Munster), Fred Gwynne (Herman Munster), Al Lewis (Grandpa) and other celebrities. He often is recognized in public because of the Munsters show — or from scores of additional productions such as General Hospital, The Real McCoys, My Three Sons, Gunsmoke, I Dream of Jeannie and many more. Most admirers of Eddie Munster can recall just about every detail of the misadventures of the Munsters — a family of friendly monsters who go about their daily lives confused as to why people react to them as other than normal. Patrick and Jeff are righteously proud of the “Eddie” bike — a tribute to the show. They designed it in conjunction with Bill Farmer, owner of USA Choppers, based in Indiana. Farmer and his team outdid themselves in producing for Jeff the unique chopper shared in this issue of the East Coast Biker magazine. Jeff and “Eddie Munster” traveled to USA Chopper headquarters for the initial conferences with the design-wizard, Bill Farmer. The brainstorming took the “Eddie” bike through an evolution that morphed from a cluster of creative “what-ifs” into a reality of monstrous magnificence. The bike’s look was influenced by designs from George Barris, “the King of Kustomizers,” whose famed cars and hot rods were showcased on TV and in movies during the 60’s. Barris once built a Stingray-style bicycle constructed of twisted, tortured, welded chain. That concept was used in the bike featured here. Jeff, a car buff who owns some fine autos, met “Eddie Munster” some years ago at a car show. The pair became friends and found they shared an interest in cars and motorcycles. Soon, talk turned to a Munster-themed motorcycle for Jeff — one of the world’s biggest fans of the show and a guy who remains to this day a fan of all things Munster.

(Above) Jeff & family pose with the 1932 Ford Roadster. On the left is an image of “Eddie” and his custom bicycle painted into the bikes oil tank.

The “Eddie Munster” bike has numerous oddities gloriously displayed here by the sultry Debbie D. It has a coffin gas tank. The rear brake rotor is scribed with laser-cut bats. Spider webs are welded on the front frame. A skull perches on the lower portion of the frame. Stranger still, the rear tail light is a carriage-style coach light, reminiscent of the hearse-style lights used on the original “Munster Koach.” In addition, the street address of the Munster family’s mansion on Mockingbird Lane — 1313 — is hand-stitched on blood-red ostrich skin upon the black leather seat. The grips match the red motif. The carburetor sports a “Grandpa Munster” tribute — an assembly that looks like a pipe organ. Other details reflect additional Munster lore. The bike honors Eddie Munster’s television parents, for it is mostly painted “Herman Munster Green” and “Lily Munster Purple.” Its body seems to glow like crazed charcoals when caressed by the ravishingly sinister Debbie D. There also is a mystery touch on the bike — a dragon tail rendered in metal on the sissy bar. The tail is a tribute to the Munsters family’s pet, “Spot,” a glowing-eyed dinosaur that lived in snarling secrecy under the stairs of the mansion in television land. Jeff said that doing the photo shoot with Debbie D and Butch Patrick was an experience he’ll cherish. He said that he and Patrick frequently exhibit the motorcycle at some of the largest venues in the Northeast. It has won many trophies. The bike always generates double-takes from spectators — and plenty of offers from cunning would-be buyers, all of whom in short order are dispatched to the dungeon and the creepy crawlers there. “This is strictly my bike,” said Jeff, “but when Butch and I show it together, it makes for a kind of one-two punch. People’s reactions are amazing. It was built as though little Eddie Munster would have ridden it as he grew up.” In fact, “Eddie Munster” has grown up. Butch Patrick is now 58 years old and still a young man at heart. He started his acting career at age 8 and got his first motorcycle before age 10. He has owned many bikes. Today, he rides his own USA Chopper — a beautiful “Bad Boy” bobber that takes him smoothly over life’s occasional rough spots and onto the back roads of tranquility. “Riding motorcycles and going to car shows have always been pleasures of mine, said Patrick. “Meeting a fan like Jeff and seeing his bike come to life has taken everything to a new level. I’ve gotten to know Jeff and his family. They’ve made me one of their own. In fact, they just inducted me as an official member of the Dead Man’s Curve Car Club. I’ve even got the jacket.”

The Dead Man’s Curve Custom Machines Car Club is a New Jersey club formed in 1978 by three car-crazy guys. The club now boasts some 20 members who between them have built about 70 wild hot rods. One of Jeff’s favorites is his 1932 Ford Roadster and only he has the unique motorcycle featured here. The East Coast Biker magazine would like to thank Jeff, Butch Patrick and Debbie D for sharing a look at this fine machine. If you have any uestions about this Munster-themed custom from USA Choppers they can be forwarded to Jeff through the car club’s website: www.DeadMansCurveUSA.com.

30 YEARS OF BRINGING JOY! “For The Kids” Toy Run participants made their first run on December 13, 1980 from a parking lot at Broad

Street and Cheltenham Avenue. Approximately 50 motorcycles toured through the city streets following the lead of Mike Horton and Denny Waldman, the chapter’s president and treasurer, respectively, who conceived the idea to dispel the bikers’ “bad guy” image. Through the years, as notoriety of this successful toy collection has expanded, so has the wealth of support. Celebrities such as the Honorable Seamus P. McCaffery, former Mayor of Philadelphia & Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Former State Representative Teresa Forcier, the Philly Phanatic, Santa Claus, recording artist Meatloaf, and actor Randall “Tex” Cobb, have given their time and talent to endorse our event. A special Thank you goes to Pierre Robert of 93.3 WMMR, Cavanaugh’s River Deck, Finnegan’s Wake, Tony Luke’s, the Philadelphia Police Department, the supporting sponsors and vendors, and all of the Bikers that hailed from the Mid-Atlantic Region to bring the joy of Christmas to the children and a smile to their faces. “If we can help take a child’s attention away from his or hers

illness or pain for even five minutes, then we’ve accomplished something.”

Well, as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. So after 30 years of hard work and dedication, the largest motorcycle parade in the World, the Toy Run “For The Kids” is over. The parade itself has gotten so big that the City of Philadelphia and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia can no longer handle the large numbers of participants anymore. The 2010 Toy Run had an estimated count of 115,000 participants, by far the largest turnout ever. A.B.A.T.E. of Pennsylvania’s Delaware Valley Chapter 63 would like to extend a huge Thank You to all who participated over the past 30 years!

THANK YOU! A.B.A.T.E. OF PENNSYLVANIA

by Lee D. Gaber, Esquire 1-888-CYCLE-LAW (1-888-292-5352) LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com

Hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, torrential down pours, all adding up to the wettest summer we’ve ever had since they began keeping records. However, for many of the faithful, no matter what mother nature throws at us, I know many of my readers continue to enjoy the LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com riding season. Now, as we enter into the fall months with the wet www.cycleattorney.com roads, leaves and gravel, I want to discuss the necessity of being as careful as possible when riding. I know at first, this seems very elementary, however, over the past few months I have received many calls from readers involved in accidents wherein for one reason or another, they have been unable to stop their bikes in time in order to avoid striking the vehicle in front of them that may have stopped or slowed suddenly for any number of reasons.

1-888-CYCLE-LAW

At some point we have all faced the situation when a vehicle in front of us comes to an abrupt stop. Unfortunately, regardless of the reason, if you hit this vehicle, or go down in an effort to avoid hitting the vehicle you will be held responsible in all but the most unusual situations. As such, regardless of whether you are operating your bike or your car, you must leave enough distance to allow time to stop your vehicle in the event the vehicle in front of you slows or stops abruptly. Another situation that frequently occurs, and one which we are all guilty of at some point in our lives, is passing on the right. This commonly occurs when the vehicle in front of us slows down to make a left turn, and there is enough room to pass in the travel lane or on the paved shoulder. However, in virtually every circumstance this is an illegal maneuver unless the road is marked as a two lane roadway, if not, you risk not only serious harm but also the risk of receiving a citation for illegal passing. In situations like those described above, even though the operator of the motorcycle may feel that he/she has done nothing wrong, if litigation ensues and we end up in front of a jury or arbitration panel, it is very rare that the motorcyclists will be given the “benefit of the doubt”. Regardless of the evidence, if it’s a close call, juries, unfortunately generally favor the automobile driver. Bottom line, ride safe, and don’t make unnecessary risky maneuvers. As I always say, it’s easier to avoid an accident than to fight over fault!! Rick Henry April 30, 1956 - August 9, 2011

Rick Henry was a brother, friend and a true American Patriot. He served in the US Military at two different times. Rick was born in Pittsburgh, PA and died in Mesa, AZ. Rick was married for 28 yrs to Karen Henry, they had two children and two grandchildren. Rick was a member of many State ABATE chapters, SoLR (he was the Director & co-creator of this group in 1999), NCOM member group and he was an MRF member. Rick touched so many lives in ways he would have never realized. There are folks all over the country writing about how much he had enriched their lives & how they are richer & better for having known him. He was the best brother a sister could ask for. Rest now brother. Our loss is now Heaven’s gain. Ride free....

Vintage Motorcycle Daze Old bikes and bikers defy the weatherman Story & photos submitted by Eric Heyman

It was either sh*t or get off the pot on Sunday 8/21 at Wentz Run Park. The Vintage Motorcycle Daze show/swap meet was already rained out the week before and the weather forecast for the rain date was just as bad! The show was on as the morning was sun and clouds but with a threat of violent thunder storms. The turnout was great considering the weather. There were 24 bikes registered in the show and about 75-80 bikes showed up knowing the rain was on the way. There was a good variety of vintage machines; British, Japanese, Italian, American, 2 stroke, 4 stroke, etc. Everything went smoothly until around 2:00pm when the skies opened up and dumped a TORRENTIAL downpour on us for about an hour. Most of us waited out the rain to finish the show and ride home. The top three bikes won cash, trophies, and prizes. It was a great event regardless of attendance being much lower than expected since it was a rain date along with more bad weather. I saw lots of old friends and made a bunch of new ones as well. I’m already looking forward to next year’s show! A big thanks goes out to Redline Motorsports, Horizon Waste Service, the OPG (Oily Pipes club) and the Hodaka Club of America.

An earthquake and a hurricane ending a month of record rainfall made August seem like a disaster in the tri-county area. Like many parts of the east coast, rains from Hurricane Irene flooded riversides and roads that were popular for riding. I tried to ride on one of my favorite rides to Brandywine Creek State Park four days after the hurricane left, but Route 100 was closed near the park to clear fallen branches. Riding routes are going to have to be checked and changed until the cleanup is complete. Despite disasters, events took place in the tri-state area in August. The 2011 Pennsylvania State HOG Rally in Gettysburg, PA on August 18-21 drew other riders beside Harley owners who participated in riding events while taking the opportunity to visit the battlefield and other area historic sites. Hundreds attended the bike night at the Herr’s Potato Chip plant on Route 272 near Route 1 on August 11th. Despite the tight time frame, Herr’s provided the opportunity to enter a bike show, and for a $5.00 donation to the Muscular Dystrophy Association and to eat one’s fill of hot dogs, hamburgers, pulled pork sandwiches along with Turkey Hill Ice Cream and of course … Herr’s Potato Chips On Eagle’s Wings chapter of the Christian Motorcycle Association, Lancaster Harley-Davison and the Activan of Chester County were present to give participants a chance to consider joining, buying or playing at the respective booths while they listened to the sounds of DJ “Jammin” Jeff Rankin. Lehighton’s bike Nigh XIII on August 13th made the small town of Lehighton the destination of riders who visited the vendors and looked at the bikes from late in the afternoon until after sunset. Members of the Keystone Chapter of Women on Wheels attended the celebration of life service held for Joyce Lloyd, the Pennsylvania State Ambassador, on August 13th at the home of her daughter, Dawn Sherlock, in Franklin, PA. Lloyd had fought melanoma for years and wanted her final service to be a gathering of family and WOW members who could create a time of celebration as they shared memories of Joyce.

An Amish family prepares to leave the Herr’s plant as the rock music begins to blare for the bike night.

On a lighter note, on August 20th six members of the Women on Wheels took a scenic ride to the Tidewater Restaurant in Havre de Grace, MD after the monthly club monthly meeting at Smaltz’s HarleyDavidson in Eagle, PA. Over 35 rain-soaked Tri-State HOG riders arrived at the club picnic that was held at club member’s Dean Keys home in Chester County, PA on August 7th. They joined less daring members who came in cars to feast on pulled pork sandwiches, hot dogs and hamburgers with all the trimmings. Luckily it rained just enough to soak the motorcycle riders so the group was able to eat and party until after sunset.

Bikers enjoyed a great time at the Herr’s Potato Chip plant.

On September 3rd Charlie Dresden, the club’s Road Captain, led members to taste homemade ice cream at the Strasburg Country Store in Strasburg, PA . The group left for the thirty-five mile ride from Hannum’s Harley-Davidson dealership in Chadds Ford. Chapter A of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association had the opportunity to attend a bike fest in Quarryville, PA on August 14 th. Hurricane Irene changed the plans of the club to attend a ride to help kidney patients in Phoenixville on August 27th and the club’s annual picnic at Boyertown Community Park in Boyertown, PA on August 28 th.

Tri-State HOG members relax and enjoy a good time at the chapter picnic.
