April 2011

Let me start this month by saying that I’m often surprised at how you respond to these editorials and the postings’ on my site. I didn’t think that I would get such a response on the poll to grow my beard back or not. Well you have spoken and I guess I’ll be growing it again. I want to thank all of those that participated in my Reader Survey during the month on March. Your information helps me to provide a better magazine. It also lets potential advertisers know more about our readers and after all it is the advertisers that allow me to bring this magazine every month. The responses that your provided were very interesting. You gave the magazine and website and overall 3.5 (out of 5) rating and I think that is a good rating. I’m still learning as I go so I’m happy to know that what I’m doing is appreciated. I will be providing more polls and surveys in the future. I will set up a new page on my site for this. If you have any ideas for polls, one question with multiple answers, send it to me and we’ll post it to see what everyone thinks. The questions can be serious or humorous, biker related or not, maybe you want to know what others are thinking about current events. It doesn’t matter! Bikers are consumers like everyone else, we are involved in politics and we pay attention to current events. So let’s hear from you ... What would you like the next poll to be? For the past nine years I have working on the magazine full time. However, the economy has hit me just like it has you. Beginning this month I will begin working a job outside of the magazine. It’s going to feel a little funny to have to actually drive to a job after commuting to my first floor office in my house. Don’t worry about the magazine though, I will continue to work on the magazine and get it distributed. With the cost of gas increasing I find it’s actually cheaper for me to mail the magazine than it is drive out and deliver them for an entire week. I have been the only one working full time at publishing but I think it’s time for me to get back in the work force. Last month I had my bike detailed by Skinny Kag, call him and he’ll do a great job for you too! Look for his ad in this issue. Now that the bike is looking good, the days are longer and the weather is starting to cooperate it’s time to take the bike out of the garage and go for a tune up ride, maybe I’ll go for some hot dogs. I haven’t had a Yocco’s Hot Dog in a while. I’ll see you on the road or at the next bike event. There’s going to be a lot to do this summer so get out there and have some fun... GET SOME WIND IN YOUR FACE!

Ride for Recovery

1,000 at 2010 event spread message of hope in addiction treatment. Poker run & picnic return May 15 The Ride for Recovery focuses on a goal shared by both Livengrin Foundation and motorcycle enthusiasts (a social group often stereotyped by the stigma attached to drinking and drugs) – to disseminate the message that recovery from addiction is possible and that help is available. Livengrin Foundation, the nonprofit treatment organization based in Bucks th County, PA, sponsors the 7 annual Ride on Sunday, May 15. More than th 100,000 people have sought the path to recovery at Livengrin, now is in its 45 year of treating a disease that affects one in four households in Pennsylvania. The 2010 poker run, organized by a coalition of Livengrin employees and bikers from the community, enjoyed its best year ever. There were almost 300 riders, 50% more than any previous year, with a total attendance approaching 1,000 on a beautiful spring day. $30,000 in proceeds were raised for patient programs and charitable care at Livengrin’s seven locations throughout the Philadelphia metro region The Ride includes a pig-roast picnic, children’s activities, live music, fundraising raffles and drawings (with prizes including a new Harley-Davidson StreetBob), vendors and a bike show. The poker run begins and ends at the Foundation’s main campus at 4833 Hulmeville Road in Bensalem, PA, between the PA Turnpike, Street Road, I-95 and Rt. 1. All-event tickets are $20.00; picnic-only, $10.00; children twelve and under are free. Information and advance registration (recommended) can be obtained online at www.livengrin.org. The event hotline is 215-638-5200, ext. 310. East Coast Biker will be at the Ride shooting video for East Coast Biker TV – we hope to see you there!

The Yellow Sportster Making it “Old School” Story & Photos by Norm Keller

I love it when I walk through a bike show or a dealership and I see that one bike that just catches my eye. So it was as I was delivering magazines to Smaltz’s Harely-Davidson one day. I couldn’t help but stopping to look at this awesome Sportster with the big 48 on the side of the tank. It didn’t look like the usual Sportster you’d expect to see in a dealership, at first I thought I was looking at a rebuilt antique.

Jack Tinney

I got hold of Tracy, the General Manager, and asked him about the bike. As it turns out it was built for one their customers as custom project. This is something that the dealership has been offering to create a unique bike for their customers. This bike was built for Jack Tinney who was happy to lend it to us for this story.

The bike is a 2010 Sportster Forty-Eight with 16” Burly Bars, 30” Attitude Stick sissy bar. Vance & Hines exhausts were added along with Zippers Thunder Max Auto Tuner and Dunlop wide whitewall tires. To give it that stand out look, Custom Chrome yellow paint and a gold leaf graphic was added for the finishing touches. You can see why this bike caught my attention. With the help of model Lauren Whitman we did the photo shoot in the showroom. Lauren with Nick Fantanarosa provide a website at www.speedfreaksdvd.com. You might want to check it out for some wild photos and videos. I recently attended an open house at Smaltz’s which brought out a lot of riders that were ready to get into the ride season and wanted to see what was new for 2011. I had a great time at the open house and taking these pictures for this month’s cover. Stop in at Smaltz’s to see what’s new and when you’re there be sure to tell them that you saw them in the East Coast Biker magazine. Also, look for the open house video on the video page of our site. You might want to have them customize your bike for you, ask for Tracy and he’ll be happy to work with you.

1-888-CYCLE-LAW

As I enter into my twenty-first year of practice, I have begun to accept the new reality that it is more difficult, and takes longer, to settle claims in 2011 than it did in the 1990’s. Forgetting for a moment that most insurance companies have fewer adjusters handling more claims, the biggest changes I have witnessed are 1) an increase in the number of insurance policies that no longer contain uninsured or underinsured motorist benefits 2) the increased number of clients who no longer have any form of health insurance and 3) more vehicles are now carrying only the minimum insurance limits required by law.

These issues seem to be related because prior to 1990, every motor vehicle policy was required to include uninsured and underinsured benefits, which could be used to pay for medical bills, if the injured party did not have health insurance and the responsible party did not have enough insurance to cover all of the damages caused. However, because uninsured/underinsured coverage is no longer required, it is rejected more than ever. Unfortunately, when this rejection is coupled with an injured victim without health insurance, the medical bills become a problem, because many drivers are carrying the minimum liability coverage required on their vehicles. As you can imagine, the combination of NO UM/UIM/Health Insurance is leading to more “insurance tragedies”, (what happens when a person with no uninsured/ underinsured coverage and no health benefits is injured by someone with minimal insurance coverage.)

These “insurance tragedies” are something that I am now seeing more then ever before. Knowing the problem, the question becomes …. What can be done, without spending a king’s ransom to protect ourselves from being the victim of an “insurance tragedy”? There is no simple answer. However, I recommend purchasing as much uninsured/underinsured coverage as you can afford, as this offers additional coverage if you don’t have health coverage and are injured by someone who is underinsured. The second portion of this equation is a bit more difficult. Where and how can you obtain health insurance, if you currently do not have any? There used to be program called Adult Basic which did provide a low cost health insurance option in Pennsylvania however, its future is uncertain due to current budget cutting. The other safety net has been Medicaid however, for the same budgetary reasons it is becoming more difficult to obtain this coverage either before or after an accident. Further adding insult to injury, if Medicaid, or some other public program, picks up the medical bills, in almost every circumstance, they will want some of their money back when the case resolves. Given the above, the easiest and cheapest way I know to avoid an “insurance tragedy” is to purchase as much un/underinsurance coverage as you can afford. This coverage can act as de facto health insurance and be used to pay medical bills, or any other losses you may incur. The other option is to obtain some amount of medical benefits on your motorcycle policy. While this won’t do much if you end up with tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills, it will provide a low cost safety net if your bills are in the $5,000-$10,000 range. Finally, if you do find yourself involved in an accident and have no health insurance, immediately apply for public assistance through the hospital’s social services office as they are best prepared to help guide you through the application process. They also know that in most cases, this is the only way they may get paid and therefore they have an incentive to help you get approved. I hope you find this information informative and if you would like additional information on this topic, or any other, I can always be reached at LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com or 1-888-CYCLE-LAW (1-888-292-5352).

Sun and a temperature around seventy degrees teased tri-state riders into thinking spring had arrived on February 18th. Even though soggy roads meant that after the ride time had to be spent by washing off road salt, the warm sunlight„s lure was impossible to resist. I saw several riders on Smithbridge Road and Route 100 along the Brandywine River on a ride that I recently took after months of stepping around my bike that has been sitting in my garage as I reached for the snow shovels. On February 18th, Ed Montgomery, Tri-State HOG‟s Hump Ride Captain, led nine riders on an “emergency hump ride” through Lancaster County during the afternoon. Even though a change of leaders ended up in the ride lasting longer than planned, at least the riders had an excuse for arriving late for dinner. Yet a few days later the cold and snow which prevented riding all month returned forcing riders to resume other activities to combat the winter blahs. Smaltz‟s Harley-Davidson declared the riding season open on February 26th with a Daytona Kick Off Party at the dealership located in Eagle, PA. Tracy Glisson and his passenger Kim Kinniry led ten bikes to the Dunkin Donuts in Morgantown, PA where the riders enjoyed complimentary coffee and doughnuts courtesy of Smaltz‟s HD. Then they returned to the dealership for warm coffee, pork and sloppy Joe sandwiches, and the music of Mark Groff, a local musician. Vendors sold sunglasses and “Biker Chic” makeup as the Eagle HOG chapter had a table of homemade bake goods for sale to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The Keystone Chapter of Women on Wheels provided two activities for its members in February. On February 5th Beth Mirasola instructed a group in the safe use of firearms at the home of two members, Maureen Moyer and Marilyn Waxberg, in Phoenixville, PA where Mirasola gave pre-range instruction to the group. Then they drove to a shooting range in the area to practice their new skills. On February 19th, Bobbie Taylor instructed the women on how to “bling” their riding clothes after the monthly meeting at Smaltz‟s HD in Eagle, PA. After struggling to fasten slippery metal- pronged beads to denim, the women agreed that blinging their clothes could easily fill long snowbound hours. Tri-State HOG members had to chance to socialize and get some exercise at Tri-State‟s Annual Bowling Night held at the Conchester Lanes in Chester, PA on February 19th. The bowlers felt the sad effects of bowling once a year during their first games, but several members demonstrated some tricky moves in their second game. Denise Martin was able to throw a series of strikes which eared her a 182 score, Barry Sisco earned a 155 score after handling some tricky spares. Some members of the group just had a good time demonstrating how a once a year game can definitely show how bowling does require practice. On the following week some club members enjoyed the movie American Graffiti at the Tri-State HOG‟s movie night held at Hennessey‟s restaurant in Aston, PA. The members of Chapter A of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association enjoyed a chance to bowl at the chapter‟s Eleventh Annual Bowling Challenge Event held at the Palace Bowling and Entertainment Center in Downingtown, PA on February 27 th where members were able to enjoy pizza, hot dogs and soft drinks during the three hours of bowling. Area motorcyclists had a chance to see and feel new bikes at the Timonium Motorcycle Show held at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, MD. held February 11-13. Several people drove almost one hundred miles to have a chance to look at custom made bikes, visit vendors and meet Playboy cover girl, Jessica Robinson. riders.

Timonium Show Breaks Record Attendance Over 46,000 attendees pack this years show Story submitted by Lisa Shackleford, Photos by Norm Keller

The Timonium Motorcycle Show proved once again why it’s considered, by most true motorcycle enthusiasts, to be the number one bike show on the east coast. The record 46,386 attendees that passed through the turnstiles, during the three day event, were treated to celebrity builders, TV and film stars, Playboy Cover models, a stage packed with hourly, high energy entertainment and the largest sea of paint, chrome, steel and leather ever assembled in the Baltimore area. Two of California’s top custom bike builders, Arlen Ness and Chica, headlined Builder’s Row, a feature area, surrounded by over 30 incredble builders from surrounding states and their hottest new creations. Local builders with incredible custom built motorcycles were on display to draw attention from attendees.

i-

If all those top builders weren’t enough, two wheel enthusiasts could meet and greet with (6) six of their favorite stars from the Golden Globe Award winning FX TV Series ‘Sons of Anarchy’. “The S.O.A. crew that flew from southern California to be with their east coast fans included: ‘Tig’ Kim Coates, ‘Juice’ Theo Rossi, ‘Bobby’ Mark Boone Junior, ‘Ima’ Kristen Renton, ‘Marcus’ Emilio Rivera and ‘Hector’ Jose Pablo Cantillo,” said Rich Kohles, Show Coordinator. Rich also related that the S.O.A. gang mixed well with Arlen, Chica and the other top builders at the after-party. Attendees interested in the top female talent in the bike world were not disappointed. The show provided an opportunity for fans to meet with Michele Smith from Discovery Channel’s HDT motorcycle TV series ‘Two Wheel Thunder’ and the sexist bike builder on any coast, Dana D’Oench. Guests were also treated to appearances by Playboy Cover Model Jessica Robinson and make-up and tattoo artist to the stars, Coley Dawn at this year’s show. This year’s show expanded into a separate 35,000 sq.ft. building, next to the main show facility. The expansion took the form of a high quality, used bike and parts ‘Super Sale’. Every vendor that we spoke to said their sales were great and customers were appreciative of the new show addition. Over 275 motorcycles entered the 2011 Custom and Antique Bike Competition from all over the eastern United States. The reason this show continues to attract so many awesome bike entries is the quality and experience of the judges, the amount of time taken to inspect each bike and the fairness and honesty during the entire 26 hour judging procedure. The record crowd could also check out everything new the 2011 motorcycle manufacturing industry had to offer from the United States, Europe and Asia. The newest models from the following top bike manufacturers were on display: Harley-Davidson, Indian, Victory, Honda, Boss Hoss, Suzuki, BMW, Yamaha, Can-Am, Kawasaki, Polaris, Hyosung, Johnny Pag, Gas Gas, Lehman, Triumph, Leola Motor Trike, Titan, Royal Enfield, Ridley, California Sidecar, Ural, American Iron Horse, Bajaj, Spyder and more. Last but not least there were hundreds of vendors selling every possible motorcycle accessory and riding gear for on and off road racing, cruising, touring, and extreme rider. Next year’s show is set for February 10, 11 and 12, 2012. For more information, show photos, video and a list of the over 50 first place class winners, check us out at www.cycleshow.net.
