Antique Motorcycle Swap Meet What’s old is new

The Neshaminy Chapter of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America held its Annual Swap Meet at the Newportville Fire Company this past January. Providing a wide variety of motorcycle parts and accessories were some 30 vendors including the Infamous George Miller and his photographic history of all things motorcycle & racing dating back to the 1930’s through the 1950’s. George provided an oral history lesson with every purchase at no extra charge. Exotic motorcycle photos were on display by photographer Dawn Deppi. Vic Northey has a great collection of Flathead items for sale. There were plenty of parts to be found for that old Indian, BSA, Triumph and Harley sitting in your garage waiting to be brought back to life. This annual event happens every year around the middle of January and if you’re looking for some new, old parts you might have to wait until next year. You can always get in touch with someone from the Neshaminy Chapter on their website at www.neshaminyvalleychapter.com and they may be able to put you in touch with someone. There’s always something interesting at a swap meet, whether you’re looking for parts or just want to take a look back at the history of motorcycling. Get out to the next swap meet you can find and I’m sure you’ll find something that will interest you.

March is the “official” kick-off month for riding. It is the month of Daytona Bike Fest where riders come from all over the country to shake of Old Man Winter and get a jump on the ride season. With the mild winter that we’ve been having it seems like the 2011 ride season never really ended. There have been plenty of mild riding days over the past few months. Sure there were a few little cold weather days but for the most part it’s been a pretty mild winter. There hasn’t been a lot of big events going on in Pennslvania and New Jersey so the Lehigh Valley Motorcycle Extravaganza, held at the Allentown Fairgrounds on March 24&25, will be a welcome opportunity to get out and see some of our ride friends that we haven’t seen much. Unplug the battery tender and take the bike, I’m sure the weather is going to be great and it will be an opportunity to loosen up those dormant ride skills. I’ll be there and I hope to see many of you there too. For the month of March we will be giving away FIVE pair of passes (total of ten) to this show so watch your email and be the correct response to get your FREE PASSES. This is the time to begin getting your bike in shape, don’t wait till the last minute. Take it to one of our advertisers and tell that you want the East Coast Biker Treatment on your bike. I organized this ride for a co-workers son, Daryl Holstay. The family was so grateful, I knew my brothers and sisters, in the Guardian Knights, would be ready for our call of duty and return this young man to his home town. Thanks to all who came out to participate in the escort for Daryl Holstay, Jr. on his trip home from Afghanistan. It was a great feeling seeing this young MP return home safely and stand in the driveway hugging his Mom. It was a bit chillier than expected but we arrived on our motorcycles to welcome him home. Braving the cold was well worth the effort. It was a great job on rather short notice! Thanks again! Here is what his father had to say in an email he sent me after the escort: “It is hard to express what today’s event meant to Daryl, Jr. He kept saying ‘I feel like I’m the president with this escort and I can’t believe they are doing this for me’.” Tanya wept at the sight of your bikes at the Turnpike and that emotion wasn’t too far behind for me.” He further added “As we got closer to home, the realization that we were finally bringing our son home, and not in any normal kind of way, was overwhelming. You guys were so sensitive to our family’s needs today and we really did hope you could have joined us for some refreshments, but we understand too that giving up your time on a Saturday was gift enough. Thank you for allowing me to pray with the group. It meant a lot.” He continued, “Daryl just commented that he and his fellow soldiers appreciate that you’re doing this. Please pass this on to as many as you can to show our appreciation.” Truly Blessed, Daryl, Tanya and Daryl, Jr. Welcome home Daryl! Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your fellow soldiers every day. We appreciate the service that you do. Indian Valley HOG Welcomes Home Gregory Nyce Story and photos submitted by Tom Giles
Gregory Nyce is an Army Specialist serving in Afghanistan. Here is a link to the Warrior Watch report. www.warriorswatch.org/?p=4490 There were 80 plus bikes and IVHOG was well represented by 20+ and a couple of cars. Also in attendance was Lehigh Valley Hog and, of course, the Warrior Watch. I don’t know how many fire trucks but there was a bunch. I am very proud of our club as they came together with only 1 and ½ day notice and we started riding in the morning with sub freezing temperatures. The most emotional part for me and others was when young Greg was walking down the “Mug-n-Hug” line, his two year old son caught site of him and ran the entire length of the line to his father’s arms. Damn I was so proud of that soldier and proud to be an American that day. I actually have a lump in my throat just informing you about it now. Young Greg’s father, also named Greg and a member of IVHOG since 2002, had approached me a few weeks ago to let me know that his son was coming home from Afghanistan soon but was unable to provide me a date and said we probably would not get much advance notice. He also asked if I would lead the ride from the staging area located at the Regal Crossing parking lot in Horsham to home town Perkasie. I told him I would be my honor to do this and I must tell you that it absolutely was.

Eastern Pennsylvania Toy Run Five years and growing strong

The weather was perfect for Santa and Mrs. Claus as they lead a parade of 668 motorcycles, 42 Jeeps and 74 street rod cars & classic cars, one Berks Products Pink Cement truck and one V&M Towing Truck. The 5th Annual Eastern PA Toy Run brought an all time high for participation on Sunday November 6th, 2011. The Eastern PA Toy Run departed from Classic Harley-Davidson and proceeded on a 25 mile scenic ride through Berks County with a Police escort and a coordinated safety effort from local Fire Police officials. The Toy Run participants filled several boxes of toys which will be distributed between the Marine Corps Toys for Tots of Berks County and Children’s Home of Reading. While participants came from Berks, Schuylkill, Montgomery and Chester Counties, Virginia, New Jersey, New York and riding different brands of motorcycles and driving a full assortment of four wheeled vehicles. Before the ride arrived at the First Energy Stadium, the
Reading Buccaneers Alumni Brass Choir performed Christmas Carols as bystanders waited for Santa. The festivities included the band Axis, Girl Scout Troop making
crafts with children, run sponsors, local organizations and the staff from the Reading Phillies fed the crowd with free Berks hot dogs. Adults, kids and pets alike took turns having their picture taken with Santa and Mrs. Claus throughout the afternoon. Thank you to all the participants in your continued support of this annual Toy Run.

Although it was New Years Day, January 1 the weather outside was far from frightful! In fact the prediction was for temps in the mid 50’s, blue skies, and dry roads! Perfect weather for a ride so…that’s just what we did. We headed to the Brass Nutt Run hosted by Chester County A.B.A.T.E. This ride has been ongoing for many years and this year, with the Nutt, a history of the ride was included courtesy of A.B.A.T.E. member, Bill McElyea. Here is his account: HISTORY OF THE BRASS NUTTS RUN: Around 1990 a few of us (members of A.B.A.T.E. of Chester County) started meeting st at Perkins in Avondale on January 1 on our bikes to start out the NEW YEAR. In 1995 at “The Meeting of the Minds”, I met a guy named “Maggot” who was the State Coordinator of A.B.A.T.E. of Colorado. As happens at those events, we started st talking about things we do as bikers. I told him about our little ride on the 1 of the year and he started to laugh. He told me the story about how, as a Chapter Coordinator, in much the same way, a few of his members had been doing a New Years Day ride for 12 years. They called it their “Brass Nuts Ride”. Anyone who showed up on their bike got a brass 1/4x20 nut on a key ring to put on their zipper pull. He said the first year when he went to the store to get the brass nuts they only had (7) and there were 10-15 members who came to the bar so, he got some 1/4x28 fine thread to use. Any of the women who st showed up got a 1/4x28 because any girl that rode on January 1 in Denver, Colorado was “fine”. I told him I was going to steal his idea to which he replied, “Why did you think I told you the story”. So, in 1994 I gave out the first four nuts. Now when you see a biker out there, look at his or her jacket zipper to see if he or she is a rider by their Brass Nutts. The Rules are st simple: you have to ride a bike on January 1 to get a nut, and we have, in the past, used the honor system in exteeeeem cases. After meeting at our local Wawa we headed off to the Rt 41 Diner. Knowing ahead of time that dozens of bikers would be there for breakfast, the diner’s crew put together a tasty self-serve breakfast buffet with everything from fruit cocktail to sausage gravy, and everything in between! Following breakfast, the event sponsor, Chester County A.B.A.T.E., held their monthly meeting. With breakfast and business out of the way the riders assembled in the parking lot and started their bikes, ready to follow Road Captain, Bruce Mangini, on the annual Brass Nutts Run. Our first stop was at the newly opened Motorcycle Outpost (www.mcoutpost.com/) in Cochranville. We browsed around the shop which includes parts, supplies, clothing, and even a swap shop. In the back is a lounge area with a computer station with internet, and service manual library. Today, we were treated to hot coffee and cookies, cookies, and more cookies! With our fill of shopping and cookies, we were back in the saddle. We rolled on the back roads of southern Chester County with A.B.A.T.E. members who provided excellent traffic coverage at all intersections. The ride concluded at The Wedge in Landenberg which is just a stone’s throw from Newark, Delaware. This was a great day for a ride! Having participated in several charity rides and annual rides like the Brass Nutt with the guys and gals of Chester County A.B.A.T.E., I will tell you that this is a great group to be associated with. I look forward to each event they host or sponsor. st

Helping Where Se Can Supporting our troops is important for this girl Story & photos by Norm Keller
I received an email on Facebook from Jill inquiring about being a cover girl. She said this; “I might be interested in giving this 41 year old face a try! lol Thanks! ‘40 plus girls still got it too!’ “ She was right, 40 plus girls do “got it” and here she is. Jill lives in central Pennsylvania with her Husband Pat and she rides her own Harley, a 2005 Heritage Softail. After owning several muscle cars from the 70’s she had always had a passion for the open road and the screaming & cracking of the pipes on her own Harley-Davidson. In 2008 she and her husband took the motorcycle safety course together and, as she puts it ... “Life hasn’t been the same since.” In August 2011 Jill became a member of the Guardian Knights motorcycle ride to raise funds for purchasing care packages for our soldiers serving over seas. And the rest just sort of took off on its own. She’s now an Associate Member of the Knights and works on the annual event staff. This years event will held on August 11th at the Susquehanna Valley Harley-Davidson www.svhd.com dealership located outside of Harrisbug. This is the 5th Annual Operation SOS ride. “Endless summer days of jumping on our bikes to destinations “unknown” is one of the best feelings in the world,” says Jill. With plenty of friends near their home that share their passion for riding getting a ride together doesn’t take much more than a couple of phone calls and before you know it the driveway looks like a Harley dealership. Getting to know Jill & Pat was a pleasure, they are two great people with a love for motorcycles and helping our troops. I had a great time taking the photos and spending time with them. No, you don’t have to be a 20 something model to be on the cover of the East Coast Biker magazine (although it might help) and we love to photograph real riders and have them featured. From the beginning of this magazine it has always been about you, the rider and that’s the way we want to keep it.

Winter’s grip was not constant on the tri-state area in January so the shifting temperatures brought chances to take the bike out of the garage in January. On January 28th the temperatures were over fifty degrees and bikes could be seen on roads that were covered with a coating of ice just the weekend before. Despite the ice storm on January 21st area riders attended the International Motorcycle Show held at the Javits Convention Center in New York City which took place from January 20 to 22. Thirty–six Tri-State HOG members boarded a bus at Hannum’s Harley-Davidson at the Media dealership at 9:30am after waiting one hour for the bus to free itself from the glazed -over parking lot. The group arrived at the convention center on West 34th Street in New York City around noon after a slow icy ride on the New Jersey Turnpike. The show usually is a big area event, but members remarked that last year’s show covered two floors of the center while this year’s show occupied only one floor. However, that area was jammed with the most recent models that Victory, Ducati, Indian, Hysung, Suzuki, Aprilla, Triumph, Yamaha, and Harley-Davidson and more had to offer. There were also antique bikes like a 1931 Model C Harley-Davison on display. Besides the usual variety of vendors, the show included seminars which ran every half hour on topics of interest to riders like bike maintenance and the use of proper riding gear. Also, Doug Wafike talked about his motorcycle trips around the world during his presentation then answered questions at his station near the seminar area all day. In the back of the center, The Smage Brothers put on a stunt show and talked about their school for racing. The All New Jersey Show gave area riders a chance see motorcycles on January 14 & 15 at the Garden State Exhibit Center in Somerset, New Jersey. At the show, riders could compete for prizes and trophies for their bikes or shop for jewelry, leather, and clothing. There was also a craft fair and live music. Hannum’s Harley-Davidson started the New Year with a Polar Bear Run on January 8th. The spring-like weather may have accounted for the 153 bikes which Bill Hendrickson, the Activities Officer of Tri-state HOG , reported left the Media Dealership at 11:30am. The group rode to the Motorcycle Outpost, a motorcycle parts store owned by a former Hannum’s employee located on Route 41 near the intersection of Route 10 in Chester County. After shopping the group went to the West Bradford for a late lunch. Chapter A of the Gold Wing Road Rider’s Association started the New Year off with a ride from the WAWA on Route 113 to Pennsburg. Sixteen members on either two wheels or four met at the Pennsburg Diner for a New Year’s Day breakfast.

Members of Tri-State HOG took advantage of their annual chance to show off their bowling techniques at the Conchester Lanes near Chester on January 28th. Mary Wilson, the Ladies of Harley Officer, worked hard to provide the traditional event for the membership. Sleet and ice caused Julianne Yarwood, the Director of the Keystone Chapter of WOW to cancel the first meeting of the New Year scheduled to be held at Smaltz’s Harley-Davidson in Eagle. All in all the new year of 2012 got off to a good start for riders in the tri-state area.

I just recently met with a new client who was seriously injured as a result of another distracted driver pulling from a stop sign directly into his path of travel. As is typical of my clients, this individual was approximately 60 years of age, has been riding motorcycles for most of his life and had never been involved in an accident until this fateful day. As badly injured as he was, hopefully after rehabilitation, he will regain all or much of the use of his leg. My point here is; when I was first referred LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com this case, based upon the description of the accident and the injuries, I www.cycleattorney.com knew that I would be able to help. However, one of the first concerns I had was; is there going to be adequate insurance coverage to compensate him for all he is going through, and will go through in the future.

Fortunately, in this situation the answer was yes, not because the responsible person had a lot of insurance, (although he did have more than the $15,000.00 in liability limits as required in Pennsylvania), but because my client purchased $100,000.00 in underinsured motorist coverage and the stacking option which allows him to stack the underinsured coverages from his other vehicles onto his motorcycle coverage. When speaking with him, he was aware that he had purchased these options because he knew how important it was to have adequate uninsured and underinsured coverage in case he ever found himself in this situation. When I visited him and his wife at their home, although they knew they had good insurance, they didn’t fully understand the extent of their coverage until I explained the details. Although it may not make his bones heal any faster, he realized that the premiums he has paid over the years would now ensure that he would be able to financially take care of himself and his family. With the season rapidly approaching, this is the perfect time for everyone to pull out their auto and motorcycle polices and make sure that you have adequate limits of liability and most importantly uninsured and underinsured coverage on your vehicles. If when comparing your auto policy to your motorcycle policy you notice that you have less coverage on your motorcycle, this is a situation that must be remedied now before spring comes, and you hit the open roads again. Contrary to what many people believe, doubling or even tripling your motorcycle insurance will most likely add between only $50-$150 a year, depending on where you live. But this increase in premium will be well worth the cost if you are ever in need of the coverage. OBITUARY Richard Harper Richard Allen "Rick" Harper, 54, of Reading, passed away January 22, 2012 in Reading Hospital and Medical Center. Born in Reading on September 6, 1957, he was the son of Richard W. Harper and Betty J. (Mast) Harper of St. Lawrence. Rick was a 1976 graduate of Governor Mifflin High School. He was employed as a mechanic at Ray's Yamaha. Surviving in addition to his parents are a brother, Scott C. Harper, companion of Brenda A. Keller, of Mohnton; two sisters, Donna L. (Harper) Spayd of Sinking Spring and Robin L. (Harper) Bradt, wife of C. Alan Bradt, of Reinholds; seven nephews; one niece; one aunt; one uncle and numerous cousins. He is also survived by many brothers and sisters from the Reading Motorcycle Club. Rick was a member of the Pike Township Sportsman's Assn. he was an avid camper, hunter and fisherman. Services were held at the Bean Funeral Home, 3825 Penn Ave., Sinking Spring. TheRev. Rebecca J.P. Hoover officiated. Interment was in the Berks County Memorial Gardens.
