The weather is beginning to get a little cold around her but still no snow and that’s fine with me. Last year I spent too much time shoveling snow and I don’t look forward to that again. Either way, February means that we are one month closer to the ride season for 2012 and I can’t wait. I’m working on a lot of new things for this year, our 10th Anniversary year. I’m getting requests to be at events, and of course to bring along some of the cover girls as well. I’m hoping to get out and see a lot of you this year as the months go by. Check me out on Facebook and Twitter to see where I’ll be next. You guys, don’t forget that special lady in your life as Valentine’s Day approaches. Forget about the bike for one day, it’s probably hooked up to a battery tender anyway, and get some flowers or a bauble for her. I know she’ll appreciate you for it. Operation Sunblock, Sunscreen is in gifts for troops Story by Loretta Jackson
Troops in the Middle East contend with bullets and bombs, insects, spiders and hostility. Windblown sand and scorching heat that can generate temps of 120-degrees or higher. The climate is so unbearable that it would top almost anyone’s “Worst-of-Conditions” list. Gina Toth-Becker, of Horsham, Pennsylvania, is well aware of the danger of too much sun and of the troops’ difficulties in avoiding sun exposure. She is a nurse and an independent beauty consultant for Mary Kay Cosmetics. Her affable personality and her expertise — in both of her chosen fields — have brought her into the inner circles of troops’ families and friends. Toth-Becker is no spider killer, but she is an expert on sun damage and ways to avoid the hazard, long known to be a trigger for skin cancer. Since last summer, she has been at the helm in her region of a project called “Operation Sunblock,” an effort to supply troops with sunscreen, lip balm loaded with sunscreen, and other thoughtful gifts. Toth-Becker credits one of the directors in the Lisa Madson National Area of Mary Kay Cosmetics with originating Operation Sunblock by arranging the shipments of care packages that included sunscreen. Now, numerous Mary Kay Cosmetics consultants are participating in the project. Toth-Becker and her biker husband, Steve Becker, heralded the idea as one that offered a way to express concern for troops stationed in scorching lands where sunburn is a plentiful commodity. “My grandfather and great-uncle were World War II Army veterans,” said Toth-Becker. “I have a cousin serving in the Air Force who’s stationed in the Middle East. In addition, Steve’s nephew is currently serving in the military.” Steve Becker, owner of a 2004 Kawasaki Vulcan Nomad, helped his wife spread the word about Operation Sunblock. He’s been riding some 15 years and is an event organizer for Kick Stands Up (www.meetup.com/KickstandsUp), a social group of riders who participate in a host of annual rides and events. Everyone was enthusiastic about helping the troops. The Operation Sunblock package comes in two variations. Sunscreen with an SPF-30 and lip balm of SPF-15 comprises the basic set. The same items, plus moisture-replenishing soap, pre-paid calling cards and treats of candy and other goodies comprise a higher-level care package. Basic sets for a donation of $20 include the fundamentals. Sets with the extras are sponsored for $35 by patriotic well wishers. “The sunblock for skin care, the sunscreen balm for lips and the personal care products are great for either men or women soldiers,” said Toth-Becker. “Everyone who receives a care package also gets a personalized note from whoever donated the set. We’ve dubbed the hand-written notes, ‘a hug from home,’” said Toth-Becker.

More than 25 sets thus far have been sent overseas. It may be hard to imagine the reaction of a serviceman upon opening the box, for care packages usually carry cargo of more traditional items like batteries, hard candies, peanut-butter crackers and the like. But sunscreen? What a great idea. Operation Sunblock was spotlighted in September as part of the pre-ride activities that took place in advance of a well attended motorcycle ride from Philadelphia to Shanksville, Pennsylvania — site of the devastating 9-11 crash of Flight 93, hijacked by terrorists. That ride, the fifth annual, was sponsored by Brothers for Flight 93 (www.brothersforflight93.com), a non-profit group that raises funds for scholarships honoring the men and women who lost their lives when Flight 93 crashed into a rural field on Sept.11, 2001. It also funds support for the memorial at the crash site. Last year, some 130 motorcycles participated. John Hamilton, a sheriff’s deputy for Philadelphia County, originated the Brothers for Flight 93 motorcycle ride, along with wife, Kimberly, his son, John Jr., a brother, Michael and another brother, Jim — a Navy man. “Gina told us about this great idea to get these soldiers something so simple yet so badly needed... sunscreen,” said Hamilton “It’s a fantastic project. These young people who go over there are getting sunburned through their clothing. We’ll continue doing everything we can to help.” Hamilton’s great-grandfather, grandfather, father and brother all are Navy veterans. He said he’s been riding motorcycles for years. And that he’s ever mindful that it is because of the sacrifices of those in the military that bikers have the freedom to ride — and to live as free citizens. He said that just before the ride, he met a soldier about to go back to Afghanistan. The 20-year-old said that temps of 120 were not unusual and that at night the rain could be nonstop. The soldier said that because of the relentless wet and the heat, his gloves just rotted away, in just a short time. “This soldier was serving at such a distant post, by the time the supply truck reached that area, the pickings were slim,” said Hamilton. “They rarely got a truck with any sunscreen — or gloves. If every person who hears about Operation Sunblock would buy just one care package, imagine the impact.” Toth-Becker’s husband is an associate of the Brothers for Flight 93 organization and the group’s webmaster — the man who maintains the informative site: www.brothersforflight93.com. “I’m fairly new to riding,” said Toth-Becker. “I want to do more in 2012. My first ride with Steve and the Brothers for Flight 93 was to see the Garden of Reflection 911 Memorial in Lower Makefield Township. I plan to ride up to Shanksville again when the 2012 ride comes up — Sept. 8, 2012.” Meanwhile, Gina Toth-Becker and her associates throughout the kingdom of Mary Kay Cosmetics will continue with Operation Sunblock as their way of saying thanks to all the soldiers, men and women, who serve... on the all too sunny side of the world. GOLD WING TOURING ASSOCIATION PENNSYLVANIA CHAPTER Y Harleysville, Pennsylvania CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME Pennsylvania’s Chapter Y of the Gold Wing Touring Association worked at raising money for charity in 2011. The motorcycle club believes charity begins at home and chose to donate to a need locally. Indian Creek Foundation located in Souderton, PA, provides opportunities for people with developmental disabilities to live and enrich their community while meeting their vocational, family, personal and spiritual needs from birth to death… serving 600 people in the Bucks and Montgomery County areas. At a recent Chapter Y meeting, Heather Kennedy, Development Coordinator for the Indian Creek Foundation, gratefully accepted Chapter Y’s $300.00 donation for the Foundation. The funds were raised through a unique community benefit program called “Meals with a Purpose” provided by the Franconia Family Restaurant. The PURPOSE is to make a fund raising opportunity available to local organizations for the betterment of the community. On Sunday, January 29, 2012 Chapter Y will again participated in Meals with a Purpose program with the proceeds going to the Sunshine Foundation… which provides terminally ill children with their dream vacation wish. The program works like this… the restaurant prepares family style roast beef dinner and Chapter Y supplies the serve staff. A portion of the cost of each meal is donated to the Sunshine Foundation. A Dad’s tribute Story & photos by Norm Keller Jim Henry
I’ve seen bikes built for many reason... to show our patriotism, remember an event special to us, because we love skulls & flames and many other reasons to numerous to mention. But when Jim Henry lost his son, Brad, to an auto accident in 2005, just three weeks before his 20th birthday, he wanted to build a bike that would keep Brad’s memory alive. Brad loved to ride on the back of Dad’s bike. “He was the perfect rider,” Jim said, “He didn’t hang on like he was afraid he’d fall off and he never fought a lean or a turn.” The tattoo to his memory just wasn’t enough, “Not everyone can see that,” Jim said. He wanted to do something that could be shared with everybody that saw it. One day Jim and a friend were out riding and stooped by the Underground Biker. After getting the “nickel tour” of the place by owner Dan “Batman” Quaye they ended up in the shop looking at the bikes. There was a bike frame on the lift that Batman said was from a wreck and he didn’t know what he was going to do with it. Long story short the Dragon began it’s birth.
Brad’s interest in the mythical beasts was the perfect way to remember him. This Pro Street style frame with its massive 127 cubic inch motor and six speed transmission began to take form as Jim would stop by occasionally to see the progress over the next few months. The 250 rear tire and strut less fender gave the machine a road pounding look that made you want to give it all she had. The seat was special made by Le Pera (www.lepera.com) in a tan leather to fit the bike and custom tank and made to look more like a saddle than just a seat. A dragon talon kickstand and foot pegs gave it a special touch. But the real finishing touch on this masterpiece is the paint, done by Joe “Painter” Buchak. Hours of painstaking work to create the scales, painted one by one, make this bike an incredible piece of art. Kudo’s goes out to Dan “Batman” Quaye for the fine work done of this bike. The final touch on this months cover feature is model Nickita who provided the “eye candy” just in case you didn’t notice. Nickita is an aspiring model and she did a great job for us on this months cover and centerfold. I’d like to thank Nickita, Jim and Batman for taking the time to share the Dragon Bike with our readers. The holidays are a mixture of fun and sadness for a rider. The holiday parties bring enjoyment and the camaraderie of other riders although winter cold means that the riding has to be a warm memory until spring weather provides a chance to ride again. December in the tri-state area meant cold and parties yet there were a few days where the bike could be taken off the tender. I was happy that Thursday, December 14 th was warm and sunny so I could put aside holiday preparations and ride. Riding along favorite familiar roads just felt so good after not being able to get on a motorcycle for over a month. There were a few more escape days in December, especially New Year’s Eve, but holiday obligations prevented me from joining the lucky ones who could take the chance to ride. Nevertheless; going to holiday parties provided hours of fun filled friendship for me. The Keystone Chapter of Women on Wheels’ party was held at the Four Seasons Diner in Gap, PA on December 10th, was small but big on enjoyment. The club provided non-alcoholic beverages and tasty appetizers and after the ten of us finished our lunch, we engaged in friendly warfare as we opened and snatched gifts from each other until we all had the present we liked. The officers of Tri-State HOG surprised the membership with a holiday meal as part of the December 13th evening meeting at Hennessy’s Restaurant. Hannum’s Harley-Davidson provided thirty items which were given away as holiday door prizes. During the meeting, Joe Mirasola, the club’s director presented a thousand dollar check to Loaves and Fishes, an Aston based organized designed to give food to people who need help in the area. The Delco Cruisers and Delaware County Motorcycle Riders held the fifth annual cruise for Kids to collect toys for Toys for Tots. Area riders met at the Rose Tree Park in Media on December 4 th. The police escorted the group that left Rose Tree Park to ride to Riddle Hospital in Media and Crozer-Chester Hospital in Chester, PA. Two other toy runs provided toys for children in the area. A group left Smaltz’s Harley-Davidson in Eagle, PA on December 11 to collect toys; another group left Brian’s Harley-Davidson from Langhorne to donate toys for Woods Services for people with special needs. The ride was Northeast Riders Motorcycle Club’s Twenty-fifth Annual Toy Run. To help a fourteen-year-old boy who was injured by a hit-and run car, a group rode from Christine’s Steakhouse on Passyunk Avenue in Philadelphia to Jake’s home in nearby Havertown and back to Passyunk Avenue on December 17th. Santa and Mrs. Claus visited the children of Chapter A of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association at the club’s monthly meeting on December 3rd at the Pottstown Diner in Pottstown, PA. The children were able to ask Santa for their toys and receive a special gift from Mrs. Claus. Now with the holidays over, tri-state riders will have to dream about riding at motorcycle shows or hope that winter may bring some warm riding days.

If you ever find yourself in need of medical care as a result of an accident, either through an E.R., a specialist, or family doctor, it is vitally important to advise the medical personnel of every body part that has been injured and is causing pain. Depending on the individual, you may encounter resistance because they are the “arm”, “neck” or “back” Dr., however, regardless of the specialty, you must advise of each and every ailment you are having on that day. Why is this important? Unfortunately, if there are several visits 1-888-CYCLE-LAW to a Dr. to check on a specific body part, but you also experience pain LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com in other areas, believe it or not, if these other complaints are not in the www.cycleattorney.com doctor’s notes, the adverse insurance company or attorney will argue that if those complaints are not in the medical records, then you must not have been experiencing pain in those other areas on those dates. As absurd as this sounds, this is a phenomenon that we are encountering on a daily basis, especially when a client has multiple injuries but the majority of their care involves a specific body part. In some cases, the physician may legitimately treat only one specific body part, but a refusal to treat different body parts on one visit may be because they will only be reimbursed for that one visit. Although this may sound cynical, as I am writing this column, I am reading an article from CNNMoney.com titled “Doctors Going Broke”, which advises that although inconvenient, many Dr.’s will force clients to come back on different days so they can be reimbursed for treating various body parts. Sadly, this financial reality is now forcing some physicians to practice this way in order to keep their practices afloat. Regardless of what the Dr. tells you, it is imperative that although you may be receiving care for one body part, if you are experiencing pain in other areas, you explain this to whoever you are seeing. The failure to do so is often seized upon by the insurance company’s attorneys and will be used against you if litigation commences. Receiving fair compensation has unfortunately become a battlefield and I urge each of you to understand that any statement you make, or fail to make, to a medical provider, can and will be used against you if it will help the other side minimize your recovery. While this may seem incredulous, after 21 years litigating personal injury cases, it has become more about winning and losing than fair compensation. On another note, I just saw a T.V. commercial wherein an insurance company is suggesting that if you place some sort of computer drive into your car which monitors the way you drive, this may lower your premiums if you are a safe driver. While on its face this may seem like a good idea, please understand that insurance companies generally do not come out with new innovations such as this, unless they believe it is going to benefit their bottom line. There is always a flip side, what if in their opinion, you are an “unsafe” driver? Will they raise your premiums or potentially drop you? I don’t want anyone monitoring my driving every second of every day….. do you! Part of the Christmas celebration is getting together with friends and family. We all enjoy a good party and since the weather is too cold to ride why not have a party with your ride buddies. It’s a good time to take a moment and remember all the good times we’ve had over the past year and look forward to the New Year. The Christmas season started off with our annual Christmas party and chapters came in from all over the northeast. We gathered for some fun and friendship and not to mention the food, what is a party without a lot of good food. Santa Claus was on hand and gave presents a little early. We had a great time getting together and sharing in the Holiday Season. Some of the members chipped in & bought the Mother Chapter a new club sign for Christmas. The sign looks great outside the Legion where we hold our monthly meetings. We wanted to do something for others so it was time to do our bit for the Salvation Army, which is an annual event. Little Richard (National President) was the biker Santa this year. Kids of all ages had a good time. We had a lot of people donate so the Salvation Army could continue to help others. At the end of the Christmas season a biker passed away who was a Vietnam Vet. He was a friend of one of ours and his last request was a motorcycle escort so how could we turn him down.
