Autumn 2011 Catalogue 1

Welcome Welcome to the Elliott & Thompson Autumn 2011 catalogue. Launched in 2009, we are an exciting young independent publishing house with a rapidly developing list, focusing predominantly on general adult trade non-fiction and featuring partnerships with leading UK brands alongside a growing strength in both sport and narrative non-fiction. E&T also publish the cult David Charters series – wickedly funny, fast-paced, fast-living books on the City featuring financial antihero, Dave Hart. The fifth title, The Ego’s Nest, is published this June. Our lead title for Autumn is the untold story of one of the largest financial scandals – and the aristocratic conman Gerard Bevan at its heart – ever to have rocked the banking world. Full of underhand dealings in Edwardian England and involving a flight across Europe, replete with disguises and false passports, Fortune’s Spear is gripping true crime at its best. We have sports fans well-catered for also, with titles on cricket, golf and football, including a dramatic, in-depth account of the tumultuous 10-year span between the 1960s and 70s that defined the cricketing world as we know it today. There is much more besides, and we welcome you to peruse our catalogue and explore our books...

Jumpers for Goalposts: How Football Sold its Soul Rob Smyth

Jumpers for Goalposts is a fascinating and funny reflection on why football has changed so much since the inception of the Premier League in 1992, and why the old descriptions of “the beautiful game” and “the people’s game” no longer fit. Smyth looks at all the things that have stripped the charm and innocence from football, a list that includes grotesque wages and transfer fees, diving, 4-5-1, TV overkill, political correctness – and the lack of decent moustaches. With a wit and concern for the game we love, Jumpers for Goalposts is an engaging study of how football has sold its soul – and, perhaps more importantly, whether it can get it back. Author: Rob Smyth is an experienced cricket journalist who writes for the Guardian, Wisden Cricketer, the Economist and many other newspapers and magazines. He is the author of The Spirit of Cricket, paperback edition published by Elliott & Thompson in May 2011. Pub date: ISBN 13: Price: Format: Dimensions: Extent: Category: BIC: Rights:

Cricket at the Crossroads: The Tumultuous Decade that Changed the Game Forever Guy Fraser-Sampson

In a decade spanning the 1960s and 70s three major crises gripped the world of cricket. The Close affair in 1967, when Brian Close was relieved of the England captaincy in controversial circumstances, laid bare the ugly class prejudice which had lingered on from the days of Gentlemen and Players. The d’Oliveira affair saw the selection of an England touring party become a major international incident that divided the nation. And the birth of World Series cricket forced players and establishment alike to confront the very nature of the game, and how it should be played. Torn between the politics of the sport and the shifting social pressures of the day, the venerable institution of cricket found itself caught at a crossroads that would come to define how the game would be played and received for years to come. Based on original research and interviews with key figures of the day, Guy Fraser-Sampson evokes the era of the 1960s and 70s, the attitudes and politics of the period, and tells for the first time the story of the decade that dragged cricket forever into the modern era. Along the way the book tells the story of some of the cricketing greats, and of their triumphs, disasters, and personal tragedies. Gary Sobers, Colin Cowdrey, Ted Dexter, Ray Illingworth, John Snow, Derek Underwood, Geoff Boycott. The ups, the downs, and the elusive what-ifs. Author: Guy Fraser-Sampson is a wellknown best-selling business author and also writes history and fiction. Although he has been devoted to the sport since the age of 10, this is his first book about cricket.

Fortune’s Spear: The Story of the BlueBlooded Rogue Behind the Most Notorious City Scandal of the 1920s Martin Vander Weyer Gerard Lee Bevan was the black sheep of one of London’s most respectable banking families. A high-living womanizer and upper-class rogue of almost pantomime proportions, he exploited a glittering range of social connections. After a long run of success in City dealings he perpetrated a massive fraud that ruined both the City Equitable Fire Insurance Company and his stockbroking firm, Ellis & Co. He fled the country but was eventually arrested, tried and jailed. Based on new research, Martin Vander Weyer tells this incredible true story for the first time. Exploring exactly how Bevan managed it, he reconstructs in rich Edwardian detail the environment and characters of the day, as well as Bevan’s desperate attempt at disguise and flight across Europe. With resonances in today’s financial world, from the 2008 crash to the likes of fraudsters such as Bernard Madoff, Fortune’s Spear is a compelling true crime tale and a fascinating glimpse into a bygone financial world. Author: Martin Vander Weyer is Business Editor and Any Other Business columnist of the Spectator. He spent fifteen years as a banker with Barclays and is the author of Falling Eagle: The Decline of Barclays Bank.

david charters

The cult Dave Hart series from David Charters Dave Hart is an investment banker. Detestable and motivated by greed, he positively revels in his notoriety. But he is so much more than your average investment banker. He is also a fast-living, wickedly funny antihero who despises other bankers – all of them that is, except for the stunning (and stunningly brilliant) Laura ‘Two Livers’ Mackay. Shining a satirical light onto the financial world, the adventures of Dave Hart – from saving Africa to becoming embroiled in the credit crunch – are both outlandish and yet disturbingly close to reality. An incorrigible and charismatic individual, Dave Hart is the antihero for our decade.
