ecember goes by too fast. It really does. It makes up for any lag from the middle of the year because it zips by in a blink of an eye. All of a sudden, we realize another year has come and gone. Some years seem uneventful, others, substantial. This month, we highlighted those substantial years in the InDepth feature, 15 Moments We Faced. Each student and staff member featured shares a specific moment that was significant to their lives. You might have experienced something similar, or you may have your own life-changing moment unique to you. It would not be a December issue without some mention of the holiday season, and mention it we did. You can flip to Lifestyle for your holiday fashion, observe Eagle’s Life for an inside look on cultural holiday customs, and tune in to A&E for the lowdown on holiday entertainment. With Christmas fast approaching, there is much to do and much to have fun doing. December may be a whirlwind of a month, but it is a great opportunity to end the year on a good note, with family, friends, and holiday fun. Enjoy it; another semester has come and gone and winter break is nigh at hand.

A few ideas for gifts and decorations to make this holiday season are often a better option, especially in the money department. “I definitely need to save money. Even though I have a job, it’s always nice to save some money here and there,” Mosbauer said. With a low budget, oftentimes making homemade gifts can benefit the gift-giver. Although, a problem many face can be finding ideas for DIY gifts that do not take too much time or money. “When I do Christmas gifts, I usually take a mason jar and put little gifts inside, like a little cute thing or food,“ Marvine said. DIY gifts are gifts that can keep on giving, not only to the gift-receiver, but also to the gift-givers themselves. “It definitely helps save money and it just sorta makes you feel good inside when they really like your gift that you made for them,” Mosbauer said.
is the season of Christmas trees full of festive decoration. Depending on the household, tree ornaments can range from sophisticated color-matching globes to a tree full of action figure’s. Some students have taken control of decorating their trees with DIY ornaments. “A couple years ago I made an ornament with some friends, and then I gave it to my mom. It was a clear ball full of confetti and glitter,” sophomore Paige Garrison said DIY ornaments have a wide variety of outcomes. “Once I made an ornament with a penguin and a soccer ball. When it was finished I decided to keep it for myself and put it on our tree. We still put it up
every year,” sophomore Katie Pohl said. Some families make a tradition of decorating their trees with homemade ornaments. “My family used to make ornaments each year, and since we have three kids in the family, they have accumulated over the years,” freshman Kenzie Eklund said. DIY ornaments can be given as gifts for others as well. “[The ornament] was a good gift because it was very meaningful and my mom appreciated the fact that I had put the time into doing something for her,” Garrison said.

ift giving and receiving has become an aspect of Christmas that families all around the world can look forward to every year. Gifts that come from the heart and take time to make are often more sentimental, and many students have taken the initiative to ‘do it yourself’. “It’s more sentimental and that way I don’t just go out and buy them something, they know I actually thought in depth for it,” junior Maddie Mosbauer said. Just taking the time to create these gifts for family members or friends can make them more meaningful and last longer than store-bought gifts. “DIY gifts are cheaper, more meaningful and unique and they are things you can usually keep longer in comparison to store bought gifts,“ junior Lindsay Marvine said. There are many reasons why DIY gifts

n accessory to transition from fall to winter is the sweater. With the average price ranging from 30 to 100 dollars, how can this piece make it to a closet on a budget? Easy. Sweaters, from a thrift store. Erase the thought of thrift stores being for the overly-hipster or less fortunate and now consider them to be the answer to all sweater shop prayers. There are many places around Liberty to buy one of these knits at a low price. One of these places is Savers. “My favorite thrift store is Savers because it is so big and has a wide variety of sweaters to choose from. It’s a little pricier than other thrift stores, but they’re all great quality and not too much [money]” senior Michaela Gascich said. “Savers has lots of options, from oversized to classic pullovers to those ugly sweaters for upcoming Christmas parties,” junior Brandon Drew said. Another thrift store here is Hillcrest. Inside this gem of a find, all sweaters are the same price, regardless of the possible high-end brands and quality. “Sweaters here are five to ten dollars, which is really cheap compared to actual stores,” freshman

Leo Jameson said. “I go to Hillcrest honestly because it’s fun. I don’t normally like shopping but I love shopping there,” freshman Leo Jameson said. Plato’s Closet is the thrift store that is not really a thrift store. Plato’s Closet only accepts name brands and offers them back for up to 70% off. “I love buying sweaters from Plato’s Closet because they always have the brand names I want for a low price and has such a large selection,” sophomore Clarissa Lenger said. One more thrift store here in Liberty is Goodwill. “My favorite thrift store is Goodwill because they don’t charge tax. My favorite sweater I’ve ever bought is from Goodwill. I got it for fifty cents,” senior Josh Crawford said. Fashionable sweater purchases do not have to break the bank. Buying them from a thrift store can increase the originality and decrease the price.

hristmas in Germany is similar to our traditional Christmas, but also very different. The Germans use advent calendars to count down the days to “Weihnachten” (Christmas in German). People can unwrap a little present leading up to “Weihnachtsmann”. They also celebrate on the 24th, our Christmas Eve. “We always spend a lot of time with our families, play games like white elephant, or go to one of the many chirstmas markets that we have in Germany,” senior Britta Reglig say s. Weihnachten has two different versions of Santa Claus. The Christkind is an angel and is the Christmas figure for Catholic regions in Germany, especially in the south. Up in the north they have the Weihnachtsmann.

ne holiday popular in the Jewish culture is Hanukkah, which originated from Jerusalem, Israel. Hanukkah is eight day holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. This year the holiday starts at sunset on December 16, or the 25 day of Kislev, and ends nightfall of December 24. “All my dad’s family lives too far away, so its usually just our small family coming together to celebrate Hanukkah,” senior Brady Kaplan said. There main tradition during the Hanukkah season is the kindling of the lights on the nine branched menorah. There are eight smaller candles to be lit each night and a ninth candle called the shamash. “We light the Menorah and say a prayer, then we add an extra candle for everyday,” senior Marley Rodgers said. There are also other important traditions to Hanukkah such as the food. Some of the more popular food is latkes or potato pancakes, noodle kugel and fried matzah. This is just some of the things that are done to help commemorate the Holy Temple.

he winter season for most is to celebrate Christmas; for the majority it is about getting together with the whole family to share presents and company. The origin of Christmas was to celebrate the day that Christ was born. Families spend the day at church with the community, or at home opening gifts and sharing a meal together. “My family is all really close, so we always like to invite the whole family and we all get together to celebrate,” freshmen Lucas Mulac said. Many families put up a traditional tree and decorate it with their own touch. “We all get together and put up the tree and decorate the porch with Christmas lights,” junior Sydney Barchers said.

any students are involved in activities in and outside of school. George Schram is definitely one of these people who juggles activities in both of these categories. In school, George is in two different bands: symphonic and jazz. “I’m heavily involved in symphonic band and jazz band; it takes up most of my time. I am a percussionist in symphonic, and I play guitar in jazz band. What I like about band is mostly how many activities we get to participate in, like football and basketball games and also extra curricular activities outside of school; t’s just a really fun experience,” Schram said. Along with being very involved in band, George is also involved in something else besides band, he coaches gymnastics at the Liberty Gymnastics Academy. “I’m a former gymnast. I am a coach now. I began as a gymnast for about five years, then I took about a four year break and became a coach at Liberty Gymnastics Academy. Coaching is one of my primary goals right now. I am very passionate about it and it has a very heavy influence on me,” Schram said. Being a gymnast is very different than becoming a coach. Becoming a coach has allowed George to still be around the sport he use to participate in, but now he is able to train others the way he was trained. Being a coach comes with many responsibilities. “I have two responsibilities; to train beginner gymnasts to see what it is all about,, and to prepare the older, more experienced gymnast for future competitions. There are some days I miss it, and some days I don’t. I miss the ability to do things that a lot of people can’t do,” Schram said. Schram’s commitment to band and gymnastics is a great deal of work, but it has enabled him to enjoy doing the things he loves.

ay after day, staff members work to make school a better and brighter place. For Heather Anderson, this comes in the form of working at the front desk with a constant smile on her face. She takes calls and offers students any help they need. “It’s nice to see a friendly face at the front desk and know that you can always ask for help. People like her are what makes North a better place,” junior Kayla Maust said. On top of helping students and staff at school every day, Anderson has a busy schedule at home as well. She plays tennis, is a member of a book club, and spends time with her family. “I start every day with a pre-dawn walk or run with our dogs, Norman and Piper. Then, after getting to LNHS, I spend the day trying to help students, teachers, parents, and anybody else who needs it. It’s a funny job for someone so easily distracted, because there’s always something new popping up. I’m very often asking myself, ‘What was I just doing?’ My evenings are usually dictated by what the boys have going on, which is more than likely fun stuff,” Anderson said. Her family consists of her husband and four sons, and she enjoys spending time with them as much as possible. “I’ve known my husband since I was thirteen. I had a crush on him when I was in eighth grade, and he was a sophomore. I passed him on the stairs after seventh hour, so I always made sure I put on lip gloss before the dismissal bell rang. Soon, he was my boyfriend until my parents made me break up when he went away to college. Clearly, we got back together.,” Anderson said. Being so involved in Liberty North has its benefits, but it also takes a person willing to put out effort and hard work. Anderson continues to serve the school and offer help to anyone who needs it.

ho needs real friends when you can have Monica, Phoebe, Rachel, Ross, Chandler, and Joey? In all honesty, I feel as though my level of addiction for this show is so beyond normal I should probably join a “Friends” therapy group for it. But even that could not break the true love I have for not only the characters, but the story behind each one. Each character is displayed in such a unique way that it is hard to not feel a connection. Pheobe is the weird one, Joey is the player, Ross is the smart one, Chandler is the funny one, Rachel is the pretty one, and Monica is the clean freak. The diverse personalities in this group really click, entertaining a broad audience. For ten seasons, “Friends” brought out the funny in television. The humor that comes from this show is almost unreal. How anyone is able to come up with such hilarious scripts is beyond my knowledge, but I am forever grateful for those wonderful people. For the crazies who have yet to find love in this TV show, I have nothing but disappointment for your obvious lack of humor intake. This show is an oldie, but a classic. And there is no excuse not to watch considering all ten seasons will come out on Netflix in January. This will be quite dangerous for me, not going to lie. For so long I have managed to simply watch two episodes that come on TV each day, I cannot imagine having the freedom of all ten seasons, all of the time.
ecently, several major players in sports have been taking advantage of the media they are provided and wearing t-shirts with the words “I Can’t Breathe” written on them. This is a type of protest against police violence, in specific reference to Eric Gardner. Some of the athletes that have worn these shirts include NBA stars LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, Derrick Rose and Kevin Garnett. Many people are angry with the stars for focusing on these shirts, rather than the actual game. I think it would be wrong to keep these stars from voicing their opinions. This is especially so when using a medium as harmless as a t-shirt. These players have earned the national spotlight, and using it to voice their opinions is completely respectful. Nothing about their “protest” is harmful to anybody, nor should it offend anybody. It was not controversial actions like with the players from the St. Louis Rams. Even the Commissioner, Adam Silver, of the NBA said, “I respect Derrick Rose and all of our players for voicing their personal views…”. I believe this was the best possible way for the players to voice their opinions, without creating too much distraction. This way, they avoid any controversial comments, tweets, or Facebook rants. It is short, simple, and lets the world know how these players feel. Even if you do not agree with their opinions, it would be wrong to keep them from voicing theirs, in a country that is so proud of their freedom.

any people like to go to Starbucks to get their beloved coffee, but I honestly do not see what the big deal is. People go to Starbucks because they think the coffee is the best around, but every time I go, the coffee seems to be the equivalent of McDonalds. Now, Starbucks does have a large selection of drinks, but the coffee is not anything to rave over. Whenever I go to Starbucks I always end up waiting in a long line for a long time. Depending on what time of day it is, Starbucks can be extremely busy. When the employees are in a hurry, they do not do the best job making the drinks. Considering the drinks are as good as any other coffee shop, there is no need for the outrageous prices. Starbucks makes their drinks so expensive that I would much rather make coffee at home than empty my pockets. I have been to Starbucks and had good coffee, but most of the time it is just okay. Overall, Starbucks can be a good place to get coffee, but most of the time I think it is expensive, takes way too long, and is not always the best. I do not see why girls, or anyone loves it so much.

hen winter rolls around, Starbucks is one of the only things about the ice biting weather that I actually enjoy. The feeling of hot, delectable, flavored coffee running down the back my throat brightens my mood, along with my day. Starbucks can be pricey, but it is so worth it for the genuine coffee flavor. Starbucks also has a list of scrumptious goodies to go along with your choice of beverage. One specialty that they have during the winter months are festive cookies. These cookies are decorated as snowmen, mittens, and other Christmas related themes. They are also perfect to go along with a hot beverage, I personally think they are very scrumptious. Not only is Starbucks my favorite in the winter, but it also is a nice treat on the hot summer days. Starbucks offers many chilled drinks, like iced coffees and different flavored frappuccinos. I never used to like Starbucks, or coffee in general, but as I grew older, I started to favor coffee more often and appreciate how awake caffeine makes me. Starbucks is always a good place to go for genuine coffee and a nice pick-me-up to get anyone through the day.

any many things come along with the holidays. There’s family time, good food, gift giving and holiday decorations. It appears almost impossible not to be overwhelmed with excitement and joy just at the sight of all the holiday cheer. Some believe it is the happiest time of the year; these people are obviously not in high school. Another event among the holidays is class finals. So before we get to enjoy break and Christmas and New Years, we have to be tested on everything we have been taught since August. This is a strenuous process of studying, cramming and sometimes crying. All the expectations of senior year being easy or a breeze have been long forgotten. Although I have kept my average good grades this year, I have contemplated the idea of slacking a little. After being accepted into college and ready for next year, this year seems to be dragging more and more. I finally understand the full affects of senioritis and it seems to be making my holiday season less enjoyable. I cannot seem to balance the amount of effort I put into studying for finals and enjoying the fun time of year at the same time.

staff editorial:ugly sweaters gly sweaters continue to be conveyed in a negative manner. They have always been viewed as embarrassing clothing items only to be used for humor between peers. These innocent sweaters have done no harm to deserve such laughter. The Eagle’s View newspaper staff believes in the power of the ugly sweater; and we believe it will soon be trendy in the fasion industry. We should not live our lives being like a normal, boring sweater; we should live a valiant life, showing off the ugliest ugly sweaters known to man. Sweaters are warm and comfy, but ugly sweaters are straight up entertaining. Life without at least one ugly sweater would be a very sad one indeed. No one should have to suffer from this type of boring life, no matter how stuck up they are about appearance. Although these “ugly” clothing items may seem like a fashion no-no, ugly sweaters are actually becoming somewhat trendy. The majority of the Eagle’s View newspaper staff believes ugly sweaters should be fully accepted by our society, no matter it be in the winter or in the summer – embrace the ugly all year long. We view ugly sweaters as a major trend. So, sport an ugly sweater any time of the year, we will not judge you. Not believing in the potential for ugly sweaters is like not believing in Santa Clause. We all know nobody wants to be on the naughty list for Christmas, so wear those ugly sweaters loud and proud. Who knows, they may some day rule the world with their fluffy, cute, holiday spirit.
