‘The granddaddy of them all’ Former Laker football player, current athletic trainer heads to Rose Bowl By kate Hill Staff Writer Over the holidays, former Cazenovia varsity football player Sawyer Hunt, 25, is heading to Pasadena, California with the Michigan Wolverines football team for the 110th annual Rose Bowl, “The Granddaddy of Them All.” Hunt is an athletic medicine intern for the top-ranked University of Michigan team, which will be facing off against the No. 4 Alabama Crimson Tide in the college football playoff semifinal at the Rose Bowl Game on New Year’s Day. Hunt started playing football in seventh grade and played through his senior year under coaches Bob Oldfield, Kyle Martin, Tom Neidl, and Jay Steinhorst, who happens to be Hunt’s uncle. “I was a lineman for the offense and defense, playing a little bit of everywhere over

the years,” Hunt said. In 2015, Hunt’s senior year, the Lakers capped a perfect season by defeating Schuylerville 22-19 to take home the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class B championship title. The win marked the school’s first state football championship. It was also the first time a team in Section III won a state title in football. 2015 was Steinhorst’s first season as head coach and his 26th year coaching football at Cazenovia. The team was also led by assistant coaches Mark Evans and Kyle Martin. “The team was obviously super talented and a lot of fun to coach,” said Steinhorst. “[I have] great memories of that group and the undefeated season.” When looking back at that season, Hunt said that although he wasn’t on the starting lineup, it was cool to be part of the championship Rose Bowl l Page 2

Madison County tables vote on landfill lease agreement

On Dec. 19, the Madison County Board of Supervisors tabled three resolutions related to the Madison County Landfill after receiving input from several residents during a public hearing. By Kate Hill Staff Writer Following a public hearing on Tuesday, Dec. 19, the Madison County Board of Supervisors tabled three resolutions related to a proposed public-private partnership intended to address concerns about the financial sustainability of the Madison County Solid Waste Management System. Madison County has proposed awarding an operations, maintenance, and lease agreement to New England Waste Services of N.Y., Inc. (NEWSNY), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Casella Waste Systems. Per the proposed agreement, the county would continue to own its landfill and related solid waste facilities, and NEWSNY would lease the land and run day-to-day operations. The county would be involved in any future changes to the landfill opera-

tions and would retain the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) permit. “Madison County will continue to look at what is best for the future of our landfill, our residents and our employees,” county officials said in a statement on the Madison County Solid Waste website. “The board of supervisors has decided to adjourn for the year of 2023 and continue evaluating the decision before them. The next board meeting is scheduled for January 2, 2024, [and] the topic of the landfill will not be on the agenda.” In addition to postponing a vote on the operations, maintenance, and lease agreement, the board also tabled a resolution to adopt a local law to repeal a provision of an existing local law that states “Solid waste generated outside the county will not be accepted at the county landfill or at any other facility located in the county, except

pursuant to approval by the board of supervisors.” The third resolution tabled by the board is to authorize a declaration that the operations, maintenance, and lease agreement and the local law amendment would have no significant impact on the environment. On Dec. 21, Madison County Solid Waste & Recycling Committee Chair Jim Cunningham said he did not endorse the resolutions because they had not been approved by the solid waste committee before being presented to the board of supervisors for a vote. “All three resolutions were not moved,” he said, “It’s typical for the chairs of each committee to move resolutions that come out of committee meetings. If a chair does not move a resolution, another supervisor can. I did not move the resolutions.” The board decided to table the

resolutions after a public hearing on the proposed public-private partnership that drew “an overflowing number of concerned citizens,” according to Cunningham, who also reported that the overwhelming sentiment expressed by the public was that the county should slow its evaluation process down to find the best solution. In a correspondence provided to the board at the public hearing, former Madison County Department of Solid Waste and Sanitation director James Zecca shared his concerns about the proposed partnership and stated that he had been contacted by former county supervisors, solid

waste committee members, and other citizens who also have concerns. In his remarks, Zecca referred to a recent study conducted by Cornerstone Engineering and Geology, PLLC on the long-term sustainability of the current landfill operations. Zecca stated that the summary of the study underscores the irreplaceable value of Madison County’s landfill. “It raises a pertinent question: why consider relinquishing this invaluable asset to a private entity that stands to profit substantially from the landfill space allocated by previLandfill l Page 14

From page 1 team and he always tried his best to help make his teammates and himself better in any way he could. “Early in the season, everyone knew we had a good team so we did everything we could to make that season count,” he said. “Attention to detail was more crucial than ever, but also having fun and just playing football. At the beginning of the season, with all the hype around that team, coach Steinhorst told all of us to keep working and to ‘under sell, over deliver,’ not get too excited [by] what others may say about us. With each win, we stayed humble and kept working towards our goal of winning a state championship. At the end of the season, I chose [‘under sell, over deliver’] to be engraved [on] my championship ring to remember to stay humble and work hard.” According to Hunt, his experience playing football and his passion for sports in general sparked his interest in pursuing a sports-related career. His first exposure to sports medicine was as a teenager due to injuries he experienced during high school. Working with the athletic trainer at the time, Hunt was able to get a sense of what a career in that profession might look like. “Another thing football did was get me interested in powerlifting,” said Hunt. “In each off-season, I lifted weights and played other sports to help me get better for the following football season. This only pulled me further into the dynamic of kinesiology and strength training. Athletic training is a good balance of all my passions when it comes to sport performance and being able to stay an integral part of sports.” After graduating high school in 2016, Hunt attended Kansas State University, where he majored in athletic training and gerontology and minored in kinesiology. He said that although he initially struggled in his college classes, he found his stride in the hands-on athletic training classes where he got to apply his new knowledge at clinical sites throughout Kansas. Through those hands-on classes, he accumulated a total of over 2,200 clinical hours of experience at two 6A division high schools and the on-campus rec center and with the Kansas State football program and Kansas State track & field. He passed the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer and graduated in May 2021 and then sought out a master’s degree program to gain further experience and knowledge in his chosen field. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Hunt found a graduate assistantship at the University of South Florida, where he worked as a certified athletic trainer in the student health center, providing care for on-campus students. Most of his time, l

however, was spent caring for the school’s coed and all-girl cheer teams, as well as the dance team. “While I had no experience in these sports and didn’t really think much of it, it was the best thing that could have happened,” Hunt said. “My coed team won their second and third national title in a row, the second team to do that in history, and my all-girl team won a national championship as well. My dance team would also go on to compete for the first time in 10 years and place fourth nationally.” After completing his two-year program and receiving a master’s degree in advanced athletic training techniques, Hunt accepted his current internship with Michigan football. He said he is hoping to find a full-time job in the next few months somewhere in the Power Five conferences, the five most prominent athletic conferences in college football in the United States. According to Hunt, the Michigan football athletic medicine team provides care for 140 athletes and consists of four doctors on staff; four full-time athletic trainers; four certified athletic training interns, including Hunt; and

Hunt said that during football season, his role as an athletic trainer typically requires 10to 12-hour workdays, seven days a week, and a lot of travel time. “Aside from game day, the day following the game is very critical to create rehab plans for athletes who sustained an injury during play to ensure they are healthy for their next opponent,” he said. Hunt explained that he and his coworkers start a typical day of work by readying the student-athletes for exercise using different types of electrical stimulation that prepare muscle fibers to fire properly. Various sports medicine equipment is used to help warm up the athletes’ muscles before practices to ensure they are ready to perform their best and to prevent injuries. When dealing with an injury, the athletic trainers work with strength coaches to modify the athlete’s strength and conditioning exercises to lessen the strain on the injury while keeping them on track and part of the team activity, Hunt said. The staff also works with non-injured ath-

letes daily to treat muscle soreness and prevent injuries. “For games and practices, athletic trainers are critical to ensure proper hydration is achieved and to be on standby for any injuries that may occur on the field,” said Hunt. “Post-game and practice, we treat any injuries that may have occurred and use various sports medicine equipment to help players’ bodies unwind and increase their bodies’ recovery efficiency.” On Dec. 18, Hunt reported that the entire football athletic medicine staff would be traveling with the University of Michigan football team to Pasadena a week before the Rose Bowl to allow the players to acclimate to the weather and time change. Hunt said having his team make it to the Rose Bowl this year feels amazing. “Coming into this year, everyone knew this team is special, and it’s a similar feeling to how it felt going into the 2015 football season,” he said. “This team is full of 140 great young men who I have nothing but the highest respect for. The team works hard to get one percent better each day with [unprecedented enthusiasm].”

Peterboro to host Watch Night On the night of Dec. 31, 1862, enslaved and free African Americans gathered, many in secret, to ring in the new year and await news that the Emancipation Proclamation had taken effect. Just a few months earlier, on Sept. 22, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issued the executive order that declared enslaved people in the rebelling Confederate States legally free. However, the decree would not take effect until the clock struck midnight at the start of the new year. The occasion, known as Watch Night or “Freedom’s Eve,” marks when African Americans across the country watched and

waited for the news of freedom according to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, Historical Legacy of Watch Night. For the twelfth year, Owen Corpin, graduate of the Naval Academy at Annapolis, retired United States Naval Commander, and a descendant of an enslaved family that found refuge in Peterboro has created and will host the 12th Annual Peterboro NY Watch Night on Sunday, Dec. 31. Corpin intends to return to a preCOVID format with an event beginning with free registration at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 31 at the Smithfield Community Center, 5255 Pleasant Valley Road, Peterboro.

Watch night will be honored Dec. 31.

The National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum will be open and Commander Corpin will share military stories. A light lunch will be served (soup, sandwiches, and pastries). At 1 p.m. Watch Night will be described and Gerrit Smith’s connection with the earlier 1862 document will be explained before visitors proceed (drive or walk the short distance) to the Gerrit Smith Estate National Historic Landmark at 2 p.m. to ignite the watch fire and read President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.

The public is encouraged to participate. As Frederick Douglass expressed Dec. 31, 1862: “It is a day for poetry and song, a new song. These cloudless skies, this balmy air, this brilliant sunshine are in harmony with the glorious morning of liberty about to dawn up on us.” For more information: NationalAbolitionHallofFameandMuseum.org, wPeterboroNY.org, 315-308-1890. For status of the program, due to weather, call 315-3081890 after 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 30.

How to prepare for storms

W

inter arrives with fanfare as Christmas, Chanukah and New Year’s Eve all take place within days of the first day of the season. Parties and shopping may distract people from the weather around them, but after resolutions are made and the decorations are packed away, it’s not long before it’s time to confront winter’s wrath. Storms are commonplace in January and February in many parts of the world, and even March storms are not unheard of. Knowing how to prepare for storms can keep people safer and prevent home damage. If a storm is forecasted, follow these guidelines. 3 Charge a mobile phone and other electronic devices to full battery in advance of the storm in case power goes out. 3 Stock the home with extra batteries for flashlights and battery-powered devices, such

as a portable radio. 3 Invest in a car charger to charge devices if the power is out for some time. 3 Keep a supply of canned or boxed nonperishable items, as well as convenience foods that do not need to be cooked, like granola bars. 3 Periodically check to ensure that the first aid kit is stocked with items that have not expired. 3 Refill medications so that they are on hand in the event weather makes it challenging to get to the store. 3 Keep emergency supplies of bottled water. If you forget this, fill the bathtub up with fresh water. Extra water will be needed for toilet flushing if yours is a septic system. 3 Have warm blankets on hand and sleeping bags for each person in the home. 3 Unplug all electronic devices if the power goes out to protect against a surge and damage when the power is restored.

3 Exercise caution when burning candles, opting for flashlights and lanterns instead. 3 If it’s very cold outside, move refrigerated and frozen items outdoors so they do not spoil in an unpowered refrigerator. 3 Do not use gas stoves, charcoal grills or other open-flame heat sources for warmth indoors. Carbon monoxide gas can build up inside and prove deadly. 3 Follow the manufacturer’s instructions

when using a backup generator for power. 3 Stock up on gasoline for vehicles and to power gas-driven generators. 3 Use power company websites and apps to report outages and stay apprised of restoration status. 3 Be cautious of downed power lines in the area when driving or walking. Winter storms can be beautiful but dangerous without ample preparation.

Snow removal pointers

C

entral New Yorkers all have to face the fact that, each morning during the winter, there is a distinct possibility they will wake up to a driveway full of snow. Faced with being late to work or other activities, many will set their alarms in order to accomodate any snow removal that needs to be done. Some have avoided that added stress by hiring a service to plow their driveway, which hopefully will show up early enough that the commute to work or other activities will not be delayed. Below are tips for those who don’t have their driveway cleared by someone else.

Snow blower safety tips

Meteorologists are predicting an El Ni–o weather pattern this winter. What that spells out for particular regions of the country remains to be seen, but when snow hits certain areas hard, cleanup will be necessary. It is essential for homeowners and business owners to get outdoors promptly to remove snow from walkways for the safety of pedestrians. Shoveling snow can be backbreaking work, particularly when the snow is very wet or compacted. That’s why many people have invested (or plan to invest) in snow blowers to make faster work of snow removal. While these tools are quite effective, they require caution and proper technique to help avoid injuries. The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates there are 5,740 hospital emergency room-related injuries associated with snow blowers each year. The organization Safety Now says most injuries associated with snow blowers involve injuries to the hands or fingers, including amputation. Individuals can prevent common injuries and even death by following these snow blower safety guidelines. 3 Read the owner’s manual to understand all of the controls and features before use. 3 Dress accordingly for the weather, including using sturdy footwear with good traction. Boot or shoe grippers can reduce the risk of slips and falls. Also, avoid loose clothing, as scarves or jackets can become tangled in moving parts of the machine. 3 Start the snow blower outside and not in a garage or shed. Gas-powered devices give off carbon monoxide. 3 Stay focused on the task at hand, which means using the snow blower only when sober and not under the influence of medications that can cause drowsiness. 3 Working at a brisk pace can help pre-

Shovel safely

vent the snow blower blades from getting clogged from the snow sticking. Wet, heavy snow is more likely to clog the machine, so it may require more passes to get the job done. 3 Clogs can occur, and require extreme caution to dislodge. Always turn off the snow blower and disengage the clutch, says the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. Wait for the impeller blades to stop spinning. Always use a broom handle or a stick to clear compacted snow. Never stick your hand down the chute or around the blades, even if the power switch is off. 3 Keep all safety shields and mechanisms in place on the machine. 3 Do not leave a snow blower unattended. 3 If the snow blower is an electrical version, use an extension cord designed for outdoor use and plug it into an outlet equipped with a ground fault circuit interrupter. Keep the extension cord away from the auger. Even though snow blowing can be less physically taxing than manually shoveling snow, it still exerts the body. Take frequent breaks to rest. Exercise caution where you toss the snow, and make sure other people, particularly children, are not in the path of snow removal.

The beauty of freshly fallen snow is undeniable. Such beauty compels millions of people across the globe to ski and snowboard each winter, while millions more enjoy simply looking out their windows at snow-covered landscapes. If it was as convenient as it is beautiful, snow would likely be welcomed with open arms whenever the local weatherperson includes it in his or her forecast. But heavy snowfall can be inconvenient, making it difficult to travel and even creating more work for individuals responsible for shoveling their driveways and walkways. Shoveling snow can increase a person’s risk for injury, and some may be surprised to learn just how frequently such injuries happen. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission notes that, in 2018, more than 137,000 people needed medical assistance for injuries that happened while shoveling snow or using snowblowers. Sprains and strains in the back and shoulders are the most common injuries when shoveling snow. But people also can suffer lacerations and injuries related to below-freezing temperatures when shoveling snow. The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons recommends people keep these safety precautions in mind when shoveling snow this winter. 3 Stretch before shoveling. Just like you would do before

exercising in a gym, stretch prior to picking up your snow shovel. Warm up your muscles with some light exercise for 10 minutes to reduce your risk of sprains, strains and muscle tears. 3 Stay hydrated and take frequent breaks. The AAOS notes that snow shoveling and snow blowing are aerobic activities. Such activities require participants to be hydrated. In addition, taking frequent breaks can help prevent injuries. 3 Avoid shoveling snow if you’re at risk for heart attack. Some people should avoid shoveling snow entirely. According to the Harvard Medical School, researchers correlated hospital admissions and deaths due to heart attack the day after it snowed in Canada between 1981 and 2014. Researchers found that the deeper the snow, the more men died of heart attacks. In fact, researchers found that there was a 34 percent increase in heart attack deaths the day after an eight-inch snowfall, and those rates increased when snowfall

increased. Most deaths were men, but both men and women who are at risk of heart attack should avoid shoveling snow, particularly after heavy snowfall. Adults who are unsure of their heart health should consult with their physicians prior to shoveling snow. 3 Use the right equipment. Ergonomic snow shovels can make shoveling less taxing, reducing your risk for sprains and strains. Spacing hands on the tool grip can increase leverage, making shoveling easier and less likely to lead to injury. 3 Pushing snow instead of lifting it. The AAOS recommends pushing rather than lifting snow when possible. If snow must be lifted, squat with your legs, knees bent and back straight. When lifting, lift with your legs and do not bend at the waist. Scoop small amounts of snow at a time and walk to where you want to dump. The AAOS warns against holding shovels full of snow with arms outstretched, as doing so puts too much weight on the spine. Snow should not be thrown over the shoulder, as such a technique requires a twisting motion that puts stress on the back. In addition, the AAOS notes that heavy wet snow should be removed in pieces and not all at once. Anyone can get injured while shoveling snow. Such injuries are preventable when certain safety measures are taken

Have some time? Drive a veteran to the VA

The Disabled American Veterans’ Volunteer Transportation Network, headquartered locally at the Syracuse VA Medical Center, provides transportation to medical appointments for disabled veterans of the United States’s armed forces. Volunteers in the network provide this service to veterans in a 14-county area covering nearly 14,000 square miles in Central and Northern New York. It is a huge task and a necessary service, especially for veterans living in rural areas with no public transportation services. But the volunteer network needs help. Bill Gleason, head of volunteer recruitment for the Volunteer Transportation Network, said the network is facing a critical shortage of volunteer drivers to support its mission. Often, the network has been forced turn down veterans’ requests for rides simply because there is no one available to drive the vans. “Too often, we do not have the personnel to pick up veterans in many of our remote locations,” Gleason said. Many of the veterans who seek a ride to medical appointments are on fixed incomes and are forced to choose between travel costs to their providers and other household expenses. “Health needs are sacrificed for everyday necessities,” Gleason said. In the winter, the challenge is even greater, as many of the existing cadre of volunteers are retirees who spend the colder months down south. The issue dates back to 1986, when Congressional budget cuts eliminated the reimbursement for veterans’ travel expenses to and from VA approved medical appointments. At that time, the Disabled American Veterans came together to form the Volunteer Transportation Network in communities all across the country, privately funding vehicles and coordinating volunteers that would annually provide transportation to more than a half million veterans. Prior to the pandemic, the volunteer system was working. But in the two years following the onset of the pandemic, the number of volunteers in Central New York dropped by more than 50 percent. That reduction, in turn, created an even greater burden on the remaining 100-plus volunteer drivers, who in the two-year period from 2021 to 2022 transported 25,256 veterans to appointments, amassing more than 646,000 miles. Those benefiting from this service are our nation’s heroes. Now, many who served in harm’s way overseas to protect our nation are unable to cover the travel cost – or simply unable to get a ride – to necessary appointments at local VA medical centers. Monetary donations are helpful and are used to keep the network’s fleet of more than 40 vans up to date, but volunteer manpower is the more pressing need. If you can spare a few days a month to help, the DAV Volunteer Transportation Network desperately needs your help. To volunteer, or to learn more about the DAV network, contact Gleason at 315-425-4343.

Annoying increase

To the editor: New flash! During the past year and a half there has been a noticeable increase in annoying ads on TV! Most of those are the drug ads that are being used to brainwash viewers during the end of the weekly world news. For instance, watch ABC during the last 10 minutes and you will be inundated with pure hyperbole on the “benefit” of their pharmaceutical elixirs. Anyone that watches TV to be informed on the overall world news each evening should adhere to the following advice in order to retain their sanity. I would suggest using a four-letter word (parental guidance not necessary). Use the mute button to suppress this idiotic verbal garbage! While you are at it, have some fun watching the video while the voiceless actors are faking their smiles, prancing around, and laughing about how wonderful the drugs are making them appear much younger, slimmer, and healthier! Tom Dobbelaere Manlius To the editor: I am concerned that my fellow citizens of Fayetteville may be misled by the Dec. 20 article concerning the office of our village mayor. I think they deserve to have the record set straight on this very important subject. The fact is that there will be a vacancy in the elective office of Fayetteville mayor as of Jan. 1, 2024. The public’s business cannot be conducted properly if this vacancy is not filled until the next election in March. Therefore, it is urgent that the Board of Trustees appoint someone to serve as mayor until we citizens can vote in a new mayor. The fact is that it would be illegal for the deputy mayor or anyone else who is not the mayor to perform the functions, such as executing contracts, which are reserved to the mayor under NYS law (Village Law 4-400). The Deputy Mayor is vested with the powers of the mayor and may perform all the duties of the mayor only when the actual mayor who has appointed the deputy mayor is absent or disabled (Village Law 4-400(h). Obviously, it is impossible for the actual mayor to be absent or disabled when there is no actual mayor to begin with (and no mayor with the power to even appoint a deputy mayor, it would seem). Rather, Mark Olson’s resignation creates a vacancy in the office of mayor which must be filled by the board of trustees (Village Law 3-312(3). The validity of my reasoning is confirmed by the NYS Comptroller’s legal opinion 83-101. Marguerite Ross Fayetteville

Christmas and non-Christmas cards and the Christmas card list, which I am proud to say is now typed and copied into my computer. The box also contains unused shirt-sized boxes (tops and bottoms,) assorted tags, two Sharpie pens that never seem to dry out, pieces of wrapping paper too small to add to their original roll, but big enough to wrap something …and some ancient, perhaps from the 1940s or even earlier … ephemera …stickers that have lost their stickiness, designed to identify the recipient of a gift. I’ve had these antiquities for years but never found a way to use them. There are scissors in the box too because I can never find a paper-only scissors when needed and two or three items that might be gifted to someone someday. The contents are written on a sheet of paper for anyone other than myself who may want to use it. And, as in years past, as I gradually readjust my focus, I realize that all of the stresses and anxieties of the season are of my own creation. I grew the weeds that made the journey so difficult at times. There are no perfect gifts, let along perfectlywrapped gifts. It is the thought that counts. Special celebratory foods are only celebratory because of the people who share them. A pretzel is a celebration with loved ones. Greeting cards are nice, but not necessary, except when they close distances, whether that distance is close by or miles away, to share the essential meaning of the Holy Day or the season. Yes, it’s over and I am pleased, if very tired. Once again, I found my way through the weeds to celebrate the birth of peace and love in a world that is full of weeds.

Christmas Day, the day of all the year, was a joyous one in Cazenovia. With a perfect day and beautiful sleighing, the pleasure-loving members of our community made merry indeed. Despite the predictions of the over-wise that holiday trade would be very light, our merchants, generally, say they have seldom had a better trade. Religious services were held in the Episcopal and Catholic Churches Christmas morning.

The dynamo for the electric lighting station, which arrived last week, was run for the first time Thursday evening. It was used in an experimental way to test the circuits and get the machinery in running order. The first serious attempt at lighting was made on Friday night. The plant has operated every night since and barring slight interruptions due to the newness of all machinery, the service has been steady and very satisfactory. The light is brilliant beyond expectation, and those who have installed it in their places of business are unanimous in expressing satisfaction with it. The generating station is located in the Fairchild building on the creek. Only a small part of the immense building is used.

Action looking to the possible changing of the route of the highway from Chittenango to Chittenango Falls and Cazenovia in that section south of High Bridge was taken by supervisors in the closing week of the annual session which, if it materializes, will create a route, safer, shorter, and more scenic. The resolution introduced by Supervisor Norton asks that the route, now in line for construction. In 1925 be changed at High Bridge and cut along the east side of Chittenango Creek through what is now a state park, and crossing the creek just above Chittenango Falls, thence following the present highway to a point near Bingley bridge across a small feeder and continue along the west bank of the creek, into the intersection with the present highway. Four bridges would be eliminated by the change, the distance shortened about 1,600 feet and many dangerous curves avoided.

OPINION

If it can happen in Cortland…

Maybe you spent your Friday night doing typical Friday-night things and didn’t have it tuned to ESPNU. Too bad, because you likely missed a landmark moment for Central New York sports. In the 50 th renewal of the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl, the State University of New York College at Cortland, better known as Cortland State, snatched the NCAA Division III title from Illinois’ North Central in a stonecold classic. That’s right. There’s a national championship football team in Central New York. What’s more, it was a product of a roster of players and coaches with roots across the Empire State. The coaching staff alone reflects this homegrown effort. Curt Fitzptarick, the head coach, is from Fulton. So is Mike Conners, an assistant who spent so many years coaching terrific Fulton wrestling and football teams. There’s Bill Spicer, who won sectional and state titles at Onondaga High School coaching Mike Hart and Latavius Murray, then did a terrific job coaching football and track at Baldwinsville, where another Cortland as-

Years Ago

l From page 6 it is far complete: About 130 guests are expected at the Lincklaen House, New

sistant, Patrick Rotchford, got his start. Oh, and there’s lots of Section III alums who are on the roster, plus other Upstate New York products like quarterback Zac Boyes, from Kenmore East near Buffalo, who threw and ran for 473 yards in that epochal title game. How refreshing to know that you can do something special with football players from New York State. All we’ve heard, for decades, is how there’s a talent dearth here, how to find the real standouts you have to look south to Texas or Florida, west to California, next door to Ohio or Pennsylvania, anywhere but here. Yet it’s not like Cortland State is an athletic unicorn. It’s done well in many Division III sports for decades and has produced a steady stream of great players and even better coaches, many of which have made a massive impact in this area. From a football standpoint, about the only time you thought about Cortland, if at all, was in the context of its long-time rivalry with the Ithaca College Bombers and the annual game in November for the “Cortaca Jug”, one that’s even taken place at Yankee

Stadium. They were in Ithaca this time around, and the Red Dragons took it 38-28 to cap a 9-1 regular season. Nice, as was the berth in the D-III playoffs, but almost no one outside of Cortland was thinking national title for these guys. Heck, the Dragons almost were snuffed out in the first round on the road against Endicott College, but made a last-second defensive stop at the goal line to pull it out 23-17 – just the beginning, as it turned out. Grove City, at home, was next, and trailing 24-17 Cortland drove to a touchdown from Boyes to Omari Kendrick with 1:23 left and then, eschewing the tie, went for two, got it and won another thriller 25-24. This “Team of Destiny” thing picked up steam after routs of Alma (58-41) and Randolph-Macon (49-14) on the road that got the Red Dragons to the final, where the reigning champs from North Central awaited, sure to prevail again. But after a quiet first half that ended with Cortland down 7-3, it turned epic. One score followed another, the

two sides Phil Blackwell exchanging the lead three times and the Red Dragons three times breaking out of ties to go in front only to get answered. Ah, but that last play. North Central had cut it to 38-37 with 1:20 to play a mere 21 seconds after Cortland’s goahead TD, and tried to match the Dragons’ first-round magic with a winning two-point play. But it got stopped, and after an onside kick Cortland ran out the remaining clock, for themselves, for the Cortland community and for all football fans in this area accustomed to seeing their hometown teams produce heartbreak, not fulfillment. Maybe the Bills were watching. Certainly you’d think Fran Brown and his new staff at SU was paying attention, flush with new star transfers and boldly proclaiming a future of possibilities, not limitations. Even if it was on a small scale and at a small college, one can win it all right here. It took a bunch of Red Dragons to do it, slaying a metaphorical dragon along the way.

Year’s Eve. The music will be furnished by Dick Kowell’s orchestra. There are several dinner parties planned preceding the dance. About 30 will have dinner at the Lincklaen House. A group of 18 will

have supper at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Y. Stanley. Mr. and Mrs. Robert D. Constable will entertain at dinner. Miss Linda Marshall will be hostess at a punch bowl party for about 12 friends

New Year’s Eve. Mrs. C. Walter Smith will be hostess to about 100 guests at a New Year’s Day tea. Rear Admiral and Mrs. F. G. Pyne will give a small egg nog party at their home tomorrow afternoon.

OBITUARIES Richard F. Mitchell, 66 Accomplished sailor

Richard Flannery Mitchell, 66, of Cazenovia passed away on Dec. 12, 2023, after a year-long struggle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). Dick was born Dec. 10, 1957, to Heidi Flannery and W. Ledyard Mitchell, Jr. of Grosse Pointe Farms, MI. Dick earned his bachelor’s degree at Michigan State University and his MBA at The Ohio State University. Upon moving to Cazenovia, Dick entered employment in 1992 with Welch Allyn Inc. in Skaneateles and its subsidiary, Everest VIT, where he served as global operations manager for the Remote

Mother, grandmother and friend Marilyn Joyce Smith of Fairmount passed away on Dec. 15, 2023. Marilyn was born in Cazenovia, New York on Nov. 15, 1944, to Orville Clark and Phyllis Hunt Clark and was a graduate of Cazenovia High School. She was the town clerk for the town of Camillus for eight of the 20 years she was em-

2018 and worked as a project consultant with Sensor Networks Inc. until 2021. In retirement, Dick joined the Cazenovia Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter, a role he pursued with passion and dedication. Dick cared deeply for his colleagues at work and would often check in with them in difficult times, a habit he continued until his death. The outpouring of support during his illness is testament to the high regard in which he was held by those who worked with him. Dick was an accomplished sailor. He sailed competitively in college and was twice nominated for the All-American Collegiate Sailing Team. Before pursuing graduate education, Dick worked

as a sailmaker for Shore Sails in Columbus and Cleveland, Ohio, servicing the Midwest and the upper Great Lakes. It is at that time, while racing in the Snipe class, that Dick met his wife Maureen, a fellow Snipe sailor. Their love of sailing was the undercurrent of their life together. Since 1992, Dick sailed out of the Willow Bank Yacht Club in Cazenovia. Dick was the consummate sportsman. It was not unusual for him to forfeit the lead in a laser regatta to help a fellow sailor in distress. In addition to sailing, Dick enjoyed skiing, biking, playing tennis and golfing with family and friends. He served on the Boards of the Cazenovia Ski Club, Willow Bank Yacht Club, the Lorenzo Histori-

Golfers live, on average…5 years longer than those that don’t play golf. It’s simple math. Here is a simple formula for 2024… STEP 1 * No more starting and stopping. * No more “crash” diets. * No more “miracle” cures. * No more “shinny object syndrome”. * Let’s go “lean n’ mean”. * Let’s “build habits” that last forever. * Let’s just get better at keeping it SIMPLE! STEP 2 * Remove the distractions and say good by to the “pitchy” exercise gurus. * Unsubscribe from any no-value e-mails. * Unfollow them on social media. * You might be so addicted to their persuasion tactics, you can’t leave them because you think you’re missing something. * SPOILER ALERT: You ain’t missing anything. * Weed out the good from the bad with one simple question…Does it sound too good to be true? * That answer should guide your decision to stay or leave. * Once you’ve removed 90% of your distractions, you’re gonna bring it home. STEP 3 - Embrace the Power of SIMPLE * Simple movements. * Simple nutrition. * Simple actions. Notice of formation * Simple changes. of GARDEN WATER RING LLC. * Ahh…and the sweet spot…A Simple Art. Sharon Apgar, 76, of Cazenovia and formerly of Pompey, passed away peacefully into heaven, her eternal home, on Dec. 13, 2023, with her family by her side. Sharon was born on March 15, 1947 to Louis and Ruth Kraeuter in Phillipsburg, NJ. She spent her childhood in Clinton, NJ, and graduated from North Hunterdon Regional High School in 1965. Sharon studied nursing at Syracuse University, graduating with a

Ronald E. Davies Navy veteran

Ronald Earl Davies, of DeRuyter, N.Y., born Feb. 20, 1943, in Syracuse, to Fay Bachman and Harold P. Davies, went home to Glory on Dec. 12, 2023, after a long, debilitating illness of vascular dementia. Ron was raised in Nelson and lived there the majority of his life.

Bachelor of Science Degree in 1969. Sharon, a registered nurse, was employed by Onondaga County as a public health nurse and later for many years at Lyndon Pediatrics in Fayetteville. Sharon was an active, long standing member of Eastern Hills Bible Church in Manlius, teaching Sunday School for decades and volunteering there in many other ways. She had a great love of music, singing with both her church choir and the Cazenovia College Community Chorale. She loved nature and the outdoors; enjoying hik-

ing, boating, snow skiing and exploring the Adirondacks and many National Parks. Sharon’s favorite thing was spending time with her beloved family. Her most cherished roles were as loving wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker. Sharon is survived by her husband of 55 years Lawrence Apgar, as well as her children Jered (Colleen) Apgar of Pompey, Jennifer (JC) Trussell of Fayetteville and Stephanie (Stephen) Mylenski of East Chester, N.Y., and grandchildren Marin and Colton Apgar, Gavin and Addison Trussell,

Ron is survived by his loving wife, of almost 36 years, Sonia Hull Davies; daughters, Wendy and Stephanie; stepchildren: Brooke, Zachary and Jared; five grandchildren: Justin, Jade, Regan, Avery and

Logan; his siblings: Gerald, Denise, Neva and Steven. Blessed with a beautiful tenor voice, Ron was chosen to sing in the Navy’s Blue Jacket Choir. After leaving the Navy, Ron continued to enjoy singing with a number of choirs and choruses, as well as “The Nelson Quartet” and “The Rolling Hills Quartet.” Ron and Sonia enjoyed

working with wood, creating folk-art as well as some furniture pieces that they designed. They enjoyed working together to “restore” two of the homes that they lived in, which were built in the 1800s. Ron will forever be remembered as a kind-hearted man with an immense love for his county, a wonderful personality and a beautiful voice, which came naturally throughout his

entire family. He will be sorely missed by his beloved family, but we rejoice that he is no longer suffering. There are no calling hours or funeral … please, no flowers or donations. Cazenovia hockey goes 1-1 by Phil Blackwell

For all of its strong play early this season, the Cazenovia ice hockey team still found itself wondering that if it’s even better than the 5-3 record it has put together. Two of the Lakers’ three defeats were by the exact same 5-4 margin – one of them to reigning state Division I champion West Genesee Dec. 12 at the Morrisville State IcePlex, another at the expense of Cicero-North Syracuse six days later. The Northstars game took place at Colgate University’s Class of 1965 Alumni Arena, where Cazenovia bolted out to a 2-0 advantage in the game’s

first two minutes on the strength of goals by Jake Hightchew and Jack Donlin. Turning it around, C-NS had Andrew Davis convert twice, one of them short-handed, and then add a Cole Prevost goal, leaving the Lakers trailing 3-2 at the end of a wild opening period. Cazenovia controlled the second period without getting rewarded for it. Taking 10 shots to C-NS’s two, the Lakers saw each of those shots stopped by Northstars goalie Leyton Sullivan, who finished with 29 saves. Then the Lakers broke its drought in the third, Donlin getting a second goal and Rhiley Montoya also finding

the net. But Davis completed his hat trick and then, with 6:09 left in regulation, poured in the game-winner, his fourth of the night. Lucas Cornish and Jack Casey joined Hightchew in the assist column, while Ezra Stahlberg recorded 20 saves. Prevost, aside from his goal, had an assist, as did C-NS teammates Hayden Scott, Drew Matyasik and Cam Walker. Back at the IcePlex Wednesday night, Cazenovia faced Mohawk Valley, the combined team from the Utica area, and it proved quite a different game, but the Lakers were able to edge the Jugglers 1-0. When Montoya scored in the first period off a feed from Henry Miller, it

was difficult to imagine that it would be the only time either team would find the net all night. For the rest of the game, Cazenovia applied plenty of pressure, only to get turned back as Noah Narolis stopped 35 of the Lakers’ 36 shots. What it did do, though, was keep Mohawk Valley from many opportunities of its own as the Jugglers took just 12 shots, all stopped by Tucker Ives, who took a turn in goal. Sitting at 5-3 overall, the Lakers will play this Thursday and Friday in the Cortland-Homer Tournament, its only action between now and a Jan. 9 rematch with Mohawk Valley at the Nexus Center.

Caz wrestlers take loss at Central Square by Phil Blackwell

During the holiday school break, the Cazenovia wrestling team will stay quite active, venturing to the 66 th annual Windsor Christmas Tournament in the Southern Tier. Prior to that, the Lakers would have two headto-head matches, includ-

ing Thursday’s battle with Jordan-Elbridge and, two nights before that, a trip to Central Square. Fighting hard for every single point against a large-school power with more depth on its roster, Cazenovia managed four mat wins during a 53-18 defeat where 30 of the points came from

bouts the Lakers had to forfeit. After defeats in the two highest weight classes, Gryphon Foster got Cazenovia on the board at 101 pounds, going all six minutes to earn a tough 6-3 decision over Sam Widrick. Evan Rutecki was victorious at 124 pounds, pinning Andrew Dixon

early in the second period, and the rest of the points came from the brother duo of Broden and Bryce Enders. At 152 pounds, Broden Enders needed just 82 seconds to pin Colton White, and Bryce followed at 160 pounds by working his way to an 8-3 decision over Bryce St. Clair.

A night later, Chittenango had its own road match at Homer, where it took Edward Geer’s skills to prevent a complete shutout by the Trojans as it handled the Bears 64-6. Every bout had gone in Homer’s favor, including a tense 285-pound battle where Chittenango’s Elijah McDonald

went all six minutes in a 2-0 defeat to Maddox Johnson. Otherwise, it was mostly a string of pins and forfeits surrendered by the Bears, only stopped when Geer, at 152 pounds, faced the Trojans’ Dan Hardesty and pinned him in 94 seconds.

Cazenovia girls hoops takes 52-39 defeat to J-E by Phil Blackwell

A .500 record in its first four games of the season was not anything for the Cazenovia girls basketball team to feel alarmed about – at least not yet, anyway. But when a Jordan-Elbridge side off to that exact same 2-2 start showed up at Buckley Gym last Monday night, it rode two big performances by Ava Hildebrant and Abbie Ahern. The result: the team then handed

ous Board of Supervisors decisions to serve the communities of Madison County?” he said. “Alternative avenues exist for the county to obtain necessary tonnage and funds through direct arrangements with other municipalities or brokers. This approach could effectively financially stabilize operations for the long term. Moreover, reversion to standard operations in the future wouldn’t necessitate the drastic reduction of the landfill’s service life from over 100 years to a mere 25 years or less, as proposed in the form [of] a 25-year contract with Casella Waste Systems. While acknowledging the necessity of using some space for out-of-county waste, the proposed 25-year contract allocating 75 years’ worth of space appears disproportionate to the county’s needs and the value of this resource, as clearly articulated in the Cornerstone report and Casella’s proposal.” Zecca also shared with the board several news stories reporting on regulation violations and other issues associated with Casella Waste Systems operations in other counties in New York and New England. On Dec. 21, Cunningham remarked that Tuesday’s meeting was a good example of the public’s ability to impact government actions with their voices. “I agree with spending sufficient time to find the best solution for Madison County for this enormous and important decision,” he said. “I commend the chairman of the Madison County Board of Supervisors, John Becker, for his support of the past two years of this ongoing costly evaluation process, and Amy Miller, the director of the Madison County Solid Waste division, for a tremendous effort to find the best solution for the residents of Madison County.” According to Cunningham, the solid waste and recycling committee is evaluating five options for the county’s solid waste program, and the evaluations will continue into 2024.

the Lakers a 52-39 defeat. Right from the outset, Cazenovia found itself at chasing mode, trailing 15-8 after one period. And then, and for the rest of the game, Cazenovia found every comeback attempt thwarted by J-E’s top duo. Hildebrant poured in 25 points, and when the Lakers tried to stop here, Ahern produced, getting 16 points. No Cazenovia player could match those totals, though Ella Baker did

Background

Located at 6802 Buyea Rd., Canastota, the Madison County Landfill site also includes an administrative main office, a scale house, and an ARC Recycling Center for haulers. Additionally, the county solid waste department oversees four transfer stations — Canastota, Cazenovia, Hamilton, and Sullivan — where residents can dispose of their household garbage and recycling if they do not use a private hauler. For the last two years, the county has been evaluating options to stabilize the high costs of handling the 60,000 tons of garbage its landfill is permitted to receive a year. According to the Madison County Solid Waste’s “Long Term Planning” webpage, the county is concerned about the financial viability of its current operations because it does not want ever-increasing disposal fees to financially burden the community. The solid waste department does not receive revenue from taxes; instead, it is run as an enterprise fund and is funded by residential and commercial waste disposal fees that must be sufficient to support the entirety of the solid waste management system, including landfill operations, recycling, transfer stations, special programs, capital expenses, and future liabilities. The main challenge, according to the county, is the small scale of its operations and its inability to achieve sufficient economies of scale. Although the landfill has many years of remaining life in terms of capacity, the facility is among the smallest operating landfills in New York State. Despite its size, it is subject to the same regulations as much larger landfills and the equipment needs are similar. The same is true for the transfer stations and material recovery facility, which processes recyclables. “In other words, the amount of waste that is generated within Madison County is not enough to financially sustain operations with-

get 12 points and Sophie Rheaume added nine points, Bess Johnson producing six points. It didn’t get easier for the Lakers on Wednesday night traveling to face a Marcellus side that was no. 13 in the state Class B rankings and riding a five-game win streak. And the Mustangs would handle Cazenovia 76-31, working its way to a 40-16 halftime lead and riding the hot hand of freshman Tenly Baker. Hitting on 14 field goals, five of them 3-pointers, Baker’s 35 points

topped the entire Lakers roster. In addition, Cece Powell adding 19 points. Rheaume did finish with 12 points to lead Cazenovia as Hayden Bubble contributed six points. Chittenango, still in search of its first win of the 2023-24 season, did not get close to it at Mexico last Tuesday night, the Bears taking a 40-19 defeat to the Tigers to fall to 0-5 overall.

out increasing costs significantly to residents and businesses,” the Long Term Planning page states. The page also says that the costs of operating the solid waste system have increased substantially in recent years, and additional costs are anticipated in the next five years due to New York State’s regulatory trajectory. “People produce approximately 4.5 pounds of solid waste per day with [a] NYSDEC recommendation to reduce that amount to less than a pound per person per day utilizing effective recycling methods,” said Cunningham. “Many landfills have been closed around the state, which has placed enormous pressure on municipalities to manage the solid waste we all produce. . . . The solutions for managing an ever-growing volume of solid waste are complicated by increased regulations upon municipalities.” In 2021, the Madison County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution to hire Cornerstone to assess the current county landfill operations and then evaluate alternatives that may improve the long-term financial sustainability of the solid waste department. The firm’s final report was released in February 2023 and is available on the county website. The report indicates that current waste disposal fees are not sufficiently covering the costs of operations, capital expenses, and the longterm management of the landfill. If changes are not made to the system, waste disposal fees will need to increase to fully fund the program’s annual costs, as well as the future responsibilities of landfill closure and post-closure monitoring. The Cornerstone study evaluated the following three alternatives: maintaining the status quo with the implementation of efficiency measures, such as closing some of the transfer stations and beginning to charge a fee for recyclables; entering a public-private partnership for the operation and maintenance of the land-

fill; and closing the landfill and constructing a transfer station to send waste elsewhere. Based on its evaluation, Cornerstone recommended that the county prepare a request for proposals (RFP) for a public-private partnership to operate the county’s solid waste program. In addition to the alternatives evaluated by Cornerstone, Madison County has also explored an intermunicipal agreement with Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency, as well as the option of continuing to operate the landfill by accepting sufficient volumes of outof-county waste to achieve profitability and long-term sustainability. “Neighboring Onondaga County incinerates the majority of the solid waste produced in the county,” said Cunningham. “The incineration process still requires a landfill to dispose of the ash produced in Onondaga County, which Madison County takes a portion of into our landfill. The impact of Micron will increase solid waste production; thus, Onondaga County has approached Madison County to work together.” According to the “Public-Private Partnership Q&A” on the county’s website, the board of supervisors determined that a public-private partnership is “an advantageous, cost-effective alternative” that would provide “the best opportunity to achieve long-term financial stability and sustainability.” There are currently five other landfills in New York State that are run with a public-private partnership. To continue evaluating that option, the board issued an RFP in August 2023, reviewed the two qualified submissions, and selected NEWSNY as its preferred partner. For more information on the alternatives considered by the board of supervisors and details on what a NEWSNY partnership would mean for county residents and businesses, visit the Public-Private Partnership Q&A page at madisoncounty.ny.gov.

Chittenango boys beat General Brown, Mexico by Phil Blackwell

When the Chittenango boys basketball team made its way to Jamesville-DeWitt last Friday night, it did so knowing that opponents might find it impossible to keep Ryan Moesch from putting up massive numbers each time he takes the court during the game. It happened twice more earlier in the week, starting with a lopsided effort against General Brown. In that game Moesch scored more than the entire Lions roster as the Bears rolled to a 79-29 victory. Beginning with a 24-7 blitz through the second quarter, Chittenango turned a lead into a laugher, and then it outscored GB 34-10 in the second half just to be

sure. Helped by six 3-pointers and nine other field goals, Moesch finished with 36 points. In addition there was ample support which came from Bernardo Betrovski, who had 10 points, and Jack Lamphere, who got nine points. Back on the court to face Mexico 24 hours later, the Bears, who were no. 13 in the first state Class A rankings of the winter, saw Moesch again surpass the 40-point mark and do most of his damage in the middle of an 87-42 victory over the Tigers. Mexico did play well in the first quarter, only to trail 16-14. And then Mexico would see Chittenango crank things up, unstoppable on offense as tore to a 62-19 margin in the second and

third period. And much of it was Moesch, who again pulled off the feat of outscoring an opponent thanks to his 43 points that included 16 different field goals, five of them 3-pointers. What was encouraging for the Bears was seeing Brendon Barnard and Jacob Bell get hot from outside, each of them sinking three 3-pointers as Barnard earned 13 points and Bell got 11 points. Cazenovia had an even more daunting assignment than anything Chittenango faced as, at Buckley Gym last Wednesday night, it welcomed Marcellus. Marcellus, who was unbeaten and, for the first time in program history, sat atop the state Class B rankings. The Mustangs, who toppled

Chittenango 77-57 earlier in the month fueled by Mitch Donegan’s 38 points, would not get anything close to that total at Cazenovia, who played superb defense, yet still lost by a score of 55-36. At all costs, the Lakers aimed to slow Marcellus down, and did so during a strong first half, only to not take full advantage of it as its own cold spell meant that it still trailed 20-13 at the break. Then the Mustangs used a 15-7 push through the third quarter to get away, led by Tucker Burnett, who piled up 15 points, six steals, six assists and five rebounds as Will Burnett had nine points and Will Kershaw eight points.
