Holiday spirit Fourth-graders create garland for village celebration
Forty Liverpool Elementary fourth-graders are helping the village of Liverpool get into the holiday spirit by creating décor for its upcoming holiday celebration. LE Art Teacher Alexandra Smith recently was approached by the village and asked if some of her students could create holiday ornaments if it fit in with her art curriculum. Smith was happy to help. After considering a number of projects that would hold up in the winter weather, Smith decided students would make ornaments out of foam circles. With the help of the LE Parent Faculty Organization, Smith purchased the supplies needed for the project, including foam, beads, string, pipe cleaner and glitter. Once completed, the students’ ornaments were strung to create a custom garland, which will be displayed in the Johnson Park pavilion. The village’s annual holiday celebration was held in Johnson Park on Sunday, Dec. 10

Rowley bows out
Clay Republican ends campaign for Mannion’s vacated state senate seat By Russ Tarby Contributing Writer On Dec. 2, Onondaga County Legislature Chairman Jim Rowley announced that he is dropping out of the race for the 50th District State Senate seat. The former supervisor from the town of Clay, Rowley initiated his candidacy over the summer. But after Republicans lost two countywide elections in November, he re-evaluated his chances of winning in the 50th District in 2024. Because next year’s presidential election will likely see increased voter turnout, Rowley said Republican candidates will face uphill battles. While Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon cruised to re-election over Democrat Bill Kinne last month, the GOP lost two other countywide races. Democrat Marty Masterpole handily overcame a challenge from Republican Casey Jordan with more than 60 percent of the vote. And a hand recount last week confirmed that Democrat Emily Essi had unseated Republican incumbent Lisa Dell in the race for county clerk. “It’s completely irrational for me to continue with my candidacy in this environment,” Rowley posted on Facebook on Dec. 2. Salina Town Supervisor Nick Paro is now the only Republican who has declared candidacy in the 50th District. Rowley did not endorse Paro, though prominent local GOP figures, including former Congressman John Katko, hosted a Paro $1,000-per-person fundraiser on Dec.7 at the Century Club in Syracuse. On Dec. 4, a group of 15 local Republicans signed a letter of support for Paro. Those supporters – including county legislators Collen Gunnip and Deb Cody, former Manlius town supervisor Ed Theobald and Solvay Mayor Derek Baichi – don’t seem to share Rowley’s pessimism. In their letter of support for Paro, they observed, “In a town where Democrats firmly outnumber Republicans, Paro has been elected and re-elected by wide margins in the double-digits.” Three Democrats are also seeking their party’s nomination to run in the 50th District: State Assemblyman Al Stirpe, Onondaga County Legislature Minority Leader Chris Ryan and Tom Drumm, a former Oswego County Legislator. Stirpe beat Paro once before, drawing 58 percent of the vote in 2018 when Paro had challenged Stirpe for State Assembly. The 50th District’s current senator, Democrat John Mannion of Geddes, has decided against running for a third term next year and will run instead for Central New York’s seat in Congress against incumbent Republican Brandon Williams.

Silverwood Clarinet Choir to celebrate the season By Russ Tarby Contributing Writer
N
ow celebrating its 17th anniversary, the Silverwood Clarinet Choir is a 14-piece ensemble that encompasses all the voices of a true choir. Led by founders Ken and Kathy Freer of Manlius, the group performs original compositions as well as arrangements of well-known pieces – music in all styles from around the world – music that is both entertaining and challenging. Its instrumentalists are from Oswego, Onondaga, Madison and Cayuga counties. The clarinet choir, conducted by Syracuse City School District music instructor Frederick Willard, will perform a free concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17, at the Liverpool Public Library. The Silverwood Clarinet Choir (SCC) often opens its concerts with a charming composition showcasing seven families of clarinets. Penned by British radio producer Luke Whitlock, the tune “Silverwood” was commissioned by the ensemble itself and now serves as a
perfect calling card for the band. It’s a lively introduction to each of the choir’s 14 musicians. As such, “Silverwood” sounds more like a friendly conversation than a cerebral exercise in music theory. Its rippling rhythms give way to declaratory hellos, celebratory huzzahs and a few good-natured chuckles all punctuated by startling stop times. As the cheerful melody unfolds, each of the clarinets – from the wailing E♭ sopranino to the roaring contrabass – makes a statement attesting to the musicians’ individual talent and enthusiasm. Whitlock’s composition also demonstrates an astonishing team spirit that lifts SCC head and shoulders above your run-of-the-mill chamber group. The SCC stands proudly among the best clarinet choirs in the world, groups such as Toronto’s Wychwood Clarinet Choir, Los Angeles Clarinet Choir, Rochester’s New Horizons Clarinet Choir and England’s South Wales Clarinet Choir. The SCC plays a wide array of music ranging from classical to popular. Debussy’s “Ballet from Petite Suite” and Prokofiev’s “Overture on He-
brew Themes” may be performed along with popular seasonal pieces such as “Reindeer Rag,” “Parade of the Tin Soldiers” or “A Christmas Jazz Medley.” Conductor Frederick Willard began his professional career working with legendary Broadway orchestrator Michael Gibson with the hits of Kander and Ebb. Willard has been composer or lyricist on “Fractured Fairy Tales: The Musical,” “A Remarkable Story: Voices of Pan Am 103” and “Desdemona: A Play about a Handkerchief ” presented at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Willard has toured Singapore, Colombia, Brazil and throughout the Eastern seaboard as a musical director and keyboardist. His arrangements have been performed by the Lionel Hampton Orchestra, Melba Moore, Ronnie Leigh, the Central New York Jazz Orchestra and the Syracuse, Hartford and Tenerife symphony orchestras. Sunday’s performance concludes the library’s fall concert series, “Resounding reeds,” which showcased saxophones and clarinets. The series was supported by a state grant administered by CNY Arts.

Sixth-graders assist math teachers at conference
Twenty-four Liverpool Middle students and math teacher Justin Teague recently traveled to Washington, D.C., to participate in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Annual Meeting and Exposition. The group participated in a learning lab workshop, where math teachers from around the country could observe and capture evidence of students talking ontopic during a live lesson and determine how that can be linked to specific
teacher decisions. The workshop was presented by Liverpool Central School District Math Coach Miranda Magley, Math & Science Coach Lauren Massa, Math Coach Lorraine Pascarella and Teague, along with Amy Lucenta, co-founder of Fostering Math Practices. In addition to their work at the conference, students had the opportunity to visit Washington landmarks such as the Lincoln Memorial and the Smithsonian.

The 2022-23 yearbook was advised by English teacher Bridget Colabello. The spirit of giving
It is that time of year when many of us have been the effort to help others. The holiday season makes us acutely aware that there are many who will go without the joys many of us feel and the pleasures many of us may take for granted. Whether it is presents under the tree or gathering with friends and family for a big meal with more leftovers than we know what to do with, we know this time of year many will struggle to provide those things for their family and many more will struggle just to stay warm and fed and still many others will go without entirely. There are a number of things many of us can and often do take advantage of to lend even a little bit of help. This can come in the form of making a donation to the food pantry or local church that helps provide meals. We can donate clothing items and hats and scarves to help others keep warm. We can donate gifts or get a name from a giving tree and give some extra presents to make Christmas a little merrier for children. We may give the extra few dollars at the checkout stand that will go to a charitable organization. All of these efforts are good and well worth doing and as the old saying goes; every little bit does indeed truly help. Perhaps this time of year the most visible and audible reminder that there are people in need are the Red Kettle bell ringers associated with the Salvation Army. Whether on the street or at the entrance of a store, these volunteers, the bells they are ringing and the red kettles they are using to collect are a common site and have served as a friendly reminder for decades to give a little whether it was loose pocket change or a dollar or two. But the in recent year there has been a shift in the way we shop and the way we pay. With online shopping, many are out less than they once were and many of us now rarely if at all carry cash, instead using bank and credit cards for the majority of our purchases. According to the Salvation Army, this has changed the manner in which it is able to raise the funds it uses through the year, much of which has traditionally come from these red kettles. In some areas, the Salvation Army is taking advantage of the technological advances that have taken place and offer what they are calling “Kettle Pay,” which allows the use of apps like Apple and Google Pay to make a donation. But many kettles still rely on dropping some change in. The Salvation Army has also adopted an online platform for donations as well as a campaign called Love Beyond Christmas that seeks to continue to help people beyond just the holiday season to have food, clothing and shelter. To learn more about this campaign and ways to donate visit salvationarmyusa.org. With just a few days left until Christmas, if you are able and have a few extra dollars, or even some spare change, which even some change can help make a change in the lives of others, consider dropping it in one of those red kettles if you see one. These funds, even the smallest donations add up and can go a long way to help others. And as what we think of as the major part of the holiday season winds down, remember the need for support does not have a single season. And if you are able continue to show your support of local efforts like the work done by churches, food pantries and volunteer groups to help others who may not have the same advantages many of us are fortunate enough to have.

was available for critique. On the big holidays, the mash was elevated with a concoction of potatoes, rutabagas and parsnips, a mixture attended to with the same eye for perfection. There were always mashed potatoes left over … on purpose … because the next day, those mashed lovelies would be mixed with shredded cabbage, kale or most any greens and fried with butter as colcannon. I am salivating right now. Potatoes are a member of the nightshade family of vegetables which includes tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and some distant relatives of lesser, if not more deadly reputation, e.g. mandrake and belladonna. Originating in the mists of antiquity in Peru, the potato, part of what is known as the Columbian exchange, feeds millions of people throughout the world. My father’s family, the Smithwicks, are here in the United States because of the potato famine in Ireland and my mother’s family, the Champions and Toms families, emigrated to the U.S. after WWI in search of work, bringing the English preference for potatoes in any form with them. And so it is not unusual for this vegetable to be a central part of my cultural heritage and vegetable preferences. There is one kind of potato that is, hands down, eyes up to heaven, my absolute favorite. Picture this: It’s a warm summer night. My father is building a fire in the ersatz fireplace made of cinder blocks and old refrigerator shelves that sits behind the house in Carmel. Maybe you begin to play a game of cards with your siblings or chat with your grandparents as you wait. Family voices add to the chorus of crickets, spring peepers and other night creatures. The back screen door creeks as my grandmother brings out a small tray of pot holders. My Dad, when the fire was just right, places 8 big potatoes wrapped in aluminum foil onto the coals. The anticipation is heady. Only my Dad knew when to rake the potatoes out and the length of time for them to rest before removing the metal foils and passing them to each of us, now ready with the potholders. Set up for our use, salt, pepper and butter, real butter, not oleo, were on the small table by the door to the house. We bounced the hot potatoes back and forth between our hands until they were cool enough to eat, crisp skin and all - a paradise of carbohydrates on a warm summer night with my Dad. It’s the kind of memory that preserves the experience when it is no longer possible. It was only recently that I learned that potatoes have something called a high glycemic index which means that the starch of the potato is quickly turned into sugar, illustrated by one source as one baked potato’s sugar load being greater than that of a large glazed donut. So consuming one of these pomme de terres creates a sugar high! Potatoes make you feel better. And in today’s world, what could be wrong with that? And on my Christmas menus? It will be luscious latkes on Christmas Eve and, on Christmas Day, it will have to be the quintessential bowl of mashed potatoes made with real cream and Irish butter. both had fine regular seasons, and when given a fair chance to prove their worth in a genuine playoff, they did so. What a concept! Like so many others (including entire fan bases in a majority of the country), what I fear in the 12-team CFP is that established bullies – not to name names, SEC – will browbeat future committees into reserving most or all of the atlarge spots for them at the expense of others with better resumes but smaller cash reserves. To this day, a sizable portion of college football fans wish for a return to the pre-playoff, pre-BCS days of outsized regular seasons and a small bowl season that ended on New Year’s Day. It’s almost like they enjoy the suffering and heartbreak of so many. What is an absolute certainty is that, 12 months from now, if Florida State does make its way to the expanded playoffs, they’ll have more fans than ever, in large part because they’ll remember how the Seminoles were treated this year, a worthy team deemed worthless through absolutely no fault of their own. Tis the Season! Another holiday season is upon us and another “Donation Drive” for Sona Barletta, owner of Carl’s Kountry Kitchen, a diner located near the corner of Teall Ave and Court Street in the Town of Salina. Sona has been conducting yearly donation drives as long as she can remember and with the help of Mattydale’s VFW Auxiliary, she aims to help local veterans during this spiritual and giving time of year. Linda Flanagan (Auxiliary Treasurer) and Pam Stuper (Auxiliary Vice President) are working with the VAVC (Veterans Administration Volunteer Services) and the Peter G. Young Veterans Residential Program to assist in distributing much needed donations to veterans this holiday season. Gwendolyn Collins is the property manager and donations representative for the recently established Peter G. Young Veterans Residential Program just off Carrier Circle in the Town of Dewitt. The housing for homeless veterans has been open for a little over a year and is trying to gain traction within the community. With the help of local people in and around the Syracuse area they are making strides toward helping area veterans get back on their feet and becoming productive members of society. Donations that arrive at Carl’s Kountry Kitchen are to be placed in 100 stocking that will be distributed to the veterans living in the CLC (Community Living Center) on the eighth floor of the Syracuse VA Hospital and others will be passed out on Christmas day to those service members who might be incapacitated due to illness or injury. Larger and more specific donations will be dispersed to the residents at the Veterans Residential Program. Town of Salina Supervisor Nick Paro established the Veteran Outreach Coordinator position which charged me with assisting local veterans in any capacity that is deemed essential.

I was contacted by Dave Carnie, the 4th Ward Councilor for the Town of Salina, and was asked to meet up with Sona to see what I could do to help get the word out about the donation drive. This outreach is right up my alley, so I got to work immediately assisting them in amplifying donations. Working with Sona, Linda, Pam and Gwen, we got to work on putting together a list of the most often needed items to be collected. This list is posted in the window of Sona’s diner, and it has also been posted to the Town of Salina’s Veteran website under the “events” tab. With over 1,100 veterans residing in Salina this is one of the bigger towns in all of Onondaga County supporting military service, albeit active, guard, or retired members. For those one percent of Americans who choose to put on a uniform an immediate sense of family is established with bonds that are often unbreakable, but without the local support of community members none of this is remotely possible. No matter what the results on the field, the CFP committee can use the same twisted standard to knock down any nonname program and make their path to a title more difficult. Say that, in the new enlarged Big 12, an Oklahoma State or Arizona State, has an 11-1 season and then wins the conference title game. With four big conferences left, that would justify a top-four seed, right? Sure, but only if the process was truly objective. Based on what we’ve seen, if it’s close between a member of the proletariat and an overlord – say, one that wears crimson, or maize and blue – the latter will always get some leeway and the former will not. Again, it must be emphasized – this happens at no other level of football. Everywhere else, playoffs whose criteria are objective determines championships. Albany got to the FCS quarterfinals. Cortland State reached the semifinals in Division III. They

Owned ‘The Bookie Books and Toys’ Nancy Joslyn Richardson, 88, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2023, at Coble Creek Healthcare in Burlington. She was born in Syracuse on Dec. 9, 1934, to the late Rev. John Myron Joslyn and Dorothy Ada Burdick Joslyn, and was the wife of 59 years to the late John Charles Richardson who passed away in January 2023. Nancy was a homemaker and former owner and operator of “The Bookie Books and Toys” in Skaneateles. She was a former president of the Skaneateles Chamber of Commerce and was of the Lutheran faith. Nancy enjoyed reading, playing bridge, working puzzles, knitting, singing and listening to music. Most of all, she loved spending time

Ran The Harbor House Patricia Deles 94 of Skaneateles Falls passed on Sunday, Nov. 26, 2023. Pat grew up working in her father’s restaurant, The Comet, at 62 E. Genesee Street. She went on to run The Harbor House with her first husband, Edwin Bettis. Pat also ran a successful auction house in North Rose, N.Y. Pat is survived by her 6 children Sherry Wiley (Joe)
with her family, especially her grandchildren. Nancy is survived by her daughters, Katie R. Moravec and husband Dan Jr., and Abby R. Versace husband Craig; her grandchildren that she adored, Meagan Moravec Morris and husband Jordan, Connor Moravec, and Joey, Alaina and Mia Versace; a great granddaughter, Sutton Rae Morris; sister-in-law, Kay Joslyn; nephews, David and Paul Joslyn; and nieces, Sarah Anderson and Libby Arndt. Ann T. MacDonald, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 3, 2023, at Auburn Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. She was 82 years old. Born in Lockport, N.Y., in 1941, Ann was the daughter of John and Margert Lynch She graduated from D’Youville University with a degree in early education and later received her master’s degree in education from the University of Buffal. After devoting her time to rais-
ing her five children, Ann embarked on a fulfilling career as a librarian assistant at Syracuse University, where she continued to nurture students’ love for learning. Ann’s life was deeply touched by the loss of her husband, Roy, in 2021, and her daughter, Cara, in 2023. Despite these immense losses, Ann remained a beacon of strength, resilience and unwavering love for her family and faith. Will Tiger win another PGA tour event? This seems to be the “hot topic” in CNY golf circles these days since Tiger Woods returned to the PGA Tour two weeks ago when he played in the Hero World Championship. He ended up in 18th place in the 20 man field and went home with $130,000. Scottie Scheffler won the tournament by 3 strokes over Sepp Straka and went home with $1million and won by 20 strokes over Tiger. It was Tigers first tournament back on Tour since the Masters, where he had to withdraw in the 3rd round because of an injury to his plantar fasciitis. Back to the Hero World Championship… Tiger got through all four rounds and played pretty well except for an opening round of 75. He said this in an interview with the press, “I was excited each and every day to kind of get through it and kind of start piecing rounds together again. I haven’t done this in a long time so it was fun to feel that again”. Most of the TV golf analysts believe there is a lot to be optimistic about…including his 19 birdies in four rounds, to go along with the 15 bogeys and two double bogeys. Tiger said, “I think the best part of the week was the way I drove it. I pretty much drove it on a string all week. So it’s not like I have to go and try to find something the next few weeks or something going into next year”. Jim “Bones” Mackay, the long time caddy for Phil Mickelson now caddying for Justin Thomas said, “He hit a 4 iron on the 8th hole… and just the sound of it was unlike any other iron shot you hear”. C-NS girls claim another title at Jensen Relays by Phil Blackwell
Through two meets at SRC Arena this winter, the Cicero-North Syracuse girls indoor track and field team has rolled through all of its possible competition. The Northstars’ second title came at last Wednesday’s Oscar B. Jensen Memorial Relays, where the Northstars earned 125.5 points, again finishing tops as Liverpool climbed to third place with 69 points and Cazenovia (86.5) was in between them. Anna Eells won twice for C-NS, taking the 55-meter hurdles in 8.88 seconds as Grace Murray (9.61) edged Jasmine Ayre (9.62) for third. Then, in the triple jump, Eells, with a
personal-best 37 feet 5 inches, went 1-2 with Morgan Hayes, who earned second place with 39’5 3/4”. Sophia Graham added to the win total, her time of 1:42.03 good enough to take the 600meter run as Katy Harbold was third in 1:44.02 and Gianna Melfi fifth in 1:47.62. Both of the relay races went to the Northstars, as in the 4x400 Harbold, Graham, Jaydin Mackey and Camryn Jacob beat the field in 4:13.26, remarkable given that no one else went under 4:30. C-NS also won the 4x200 relay with Mackey, Stephanie Todd, Aaliyah McDonald and Selena Moreno going 1:50.24 to outpace Liverpool’s Caitlyn Guilfoil, Mikayla Greene, Mia
Wright and Nahla Battle-Crenshaw (1:53.04) in second place. Kennedy Jones was third in the 1,500meter run in 5:13.27, with Grace Scoville third and Camilla McNaught fourth in the 3,000-meter run. Callie Bednarski and Ellana Ballagh combined for three points in the 1,000-meter run and Maria Sanfilippo was fifth in the weight throw and Ayre sixth in the long jump. Liverpool had Wright take second (7.63 seconds) and Greene third (7.67) in the 55-meter dash, with Battle-Crenshaw in 10th place. Tamia Tearney and Audrey Jenkins both cleared 4’8” in the high jump for second in the team event.

C-NS, Liverpool boys hoops to meet Friday by Phil Blackwell
Most seasons, the boys basketball teams from Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool get together twice, at least, but this winter they’re only guaranteed one encounter, and it comes early in an unfamiliar location. The Northstars will host the Warriors at North Syracuse Junior High School, attempting to not just gain the upper hand in the rivalry, but further establish itself as the Class AAA team to beat in the local ranks. Liverpool had held that large-school title the last two years and beat West Genesee in its Dec. 1 opener at the Peppino’s Invitational, but found a much different result in its first home game of the season. Nottingham arrived at LHS Gymnasium and, led by Steyvon Jones, made a stunning
late comeback to beat the Warriors 58-55. The two sides went back and forth the entire first half, but just like it did against West Genesee, Liverpool appeared to get control with a strong third quarter that produced a 5043 advantage. Then Nottingham’s defense clamped down, forcing the Warriors into bad shots throughout the final period as it caught up and then passed Liverpool. All the while, Jones carried the Bulldogs’ attack, hitting on all kinds of shots and finishing with 31 points, more than half his team’s output. He outscored Kaelem Haskins, whose 23 points for Liverpool included five 3-pointers as teammate Alex Trombley added 10 points. That same night, C-NS had its home and Salt City Athletic Conference opener against East Syracuse Minoa, pushed a bit but still
defeating the Spartans 68-61 to move to 3–0 overall. Having already routed Ithaca and CBA, the Northstars jumped out 24-8 on ESM in the first quarter, only to have the Spartans chip away at that margin through the game’s middle stages. C-NS was able to close out the game, though, and Nate Francis had a lot to do with it, hitting five 3-pointers and six free throws on his way to a career-best 28 points. Andrew Benedict and Michael Pfautz each finished with 11 points, Rosco Polos adding eight points and Terrance Coppock adding seven points. When Liverpool hosted Christian Brothers Academy last Friday night, it began a stretch of three games in less than 48 hours, two of them part of the annual Zebra Classic. Baskets proved precious against the Brothers, but the Warriors pulled it out 44-39, jump-
ing out to a 16-5 lead by the end of the first quarter, the only sustained run Liverpool had all night. CBA made it scary by pulling within one, 33-32, by the end of the third quarter, but was unable to complete the comeback as Freddie Fowler’s 15 points led all individuals. Fowler added five rebounds, four assists and two steals as Haskins got seven points and five rebounds, with Daniel Dunn adding six points and five rebounds. Jeff Manuel got six points and six rebounds. To start the Zebra Classic, Liverpool prevailed 62-50 over Section V’s Hilton, jumping to a 38-22 halftime lead and cruising from there. Sean Frawley’s 15 points (including three 3-pointers) led the way, Dunn adding 11 points as Haskins and Manuel earned nine points apiece.
C-NS, Liverpool bowlers have key early tests by Phil Blackwell
Things were busy for the Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool bowling teams in the first full week of December with key match-ups against Salt City Athletic Conference rivals. C-NS would take on Baldwinsville last Friday afternoon, and it proved quite a match on the boys side, with Nehemiah Bachmann nearly getting to perfection and posting the best individual series. Bachmann had 10 strikes during an opening-game 278, then shot a 257. Only a third-game 185 prevented a career mark, but
Bachmann still finished with a 720 series ahead of the top 711 set from B’ville’s Zenon Gasiorowski. Jacob Calabria opened with a 243 and closed with a 212 during his 649 series, while Garrett Arnold’s second-game 248 highlighted a 616 set and Tom O’Connell closed with a 245 to gain a 585 series. Despite all this, and despite a total pinfall of 3,561 that beat the Bees’ 3,476, C-NS still lost by a score of 4-3, with Gasiorowski helped by a 645 series from Scott Litcey and 611 series from Wes Lell. This completed an early stretch that included bowling on Dec. 2 in the Holiday Bakers Tournament at Camden’s Lucky Strike Lanes, where the host Camden Blue Devils prevailed. Liverpool took on Fayetteville-Manlius last Monday at Green Lakes Bowl and, led by Austin Burch and a deeper roster than in years past, the boys Warriors swept the Hornets 7-0. In all, 11 different bowlers recorded an official game. Only Burch played all three games,
his 201 part of a 541 series as Ray Rucker shot a second-game 244, Xavier Theetge had his own 201 and Gianni Queior made his lone game count, posting 212. Grady Foster added a 193. On the other hand, Liverpool’s girls fell to F-M by that same 7-0 margin. Sara Conover’s 183 game was part of a 495 series, but four different Hornets shot 400 or better, led by Ashlynn Yonge’s three-game total of 479. Then Liverpool faced West Genesee on Friday and pulled out a 4-3 decision. Tanner Gits shot a 580 series and 234 high game, with Foster getting a 542 set, though both trailed the Wildcats’ Lorelai Leskoske’s 660 series and Alex Bigelow’s 605 set.
C-NS, Fusion ice hockey continue strong starts by Phil Blackwell
Playing three times in a span of less than 72 hours, the Cicero-North Syracuse ice hockey team nearly won all of those games to propel itself to a short list of top Division I title contenders. Having already handled Clinton 6-3 on Nov. 29, the Northstars traveled north for two games on the first two days of December, starting out with a 5-1 victory over St. Lawrence. Never trailing, C-NS saw Andrew Davis anchor the attack with three assists, while getting two goals and one assist from Hayden Scott.Tyler Milewski had a goal and assist. Jase
Knopp and Cole Prevost also converted as Drew Matyasik also had an assist. Against Canton a day later, the Northstars nearly rallied from a 2-0 deficit through two periods, a game only made close by great work in goal by Leyton Sullivan, who stopped 38 of the 41 shots he faced. Prevost, Nate Bustin, David Cooley and Tyler Milewski all got points in the third, but Canton did just enough to prevail 3-2, handing C-NS its first defeat of the season. Rebounding from this, the Northstars went to Casey Park last Wednesday and handled Auburn 7-0, jumping out to a 4-0 advantqage before the first period was over.
Ultimately, six different C-NS players scored goals, with only Hayden Scott converting twice as Prevost and Chase Mearon each got one goal and one assist. Milewski, Knopp and Jake Dubois also found the net, with Bustin, Andrew Davis and Rob Warner also earning assists. As for the newly-formed CNY Fusion team combining Liverpool and Fulton, it met Mohawk Valley last Tuesday at Utica’s Nexus Center and moved to 2-0 on the season, defeating the Jugglers 4-2. Trevor Smith stopped 30 of Mohawk Valley’s 32 shots, giving the attack a chance to go in front – which it did, led by Andrew Gabor,
who finished with a pair of goals. Dan Devendorf had a goal and assist, with Gavin Rodman getting two assists. John LaPlante had the other goal as Alex Kirkby, Evan Haskins and Cuyler Penrod also got assists. Fusion would look to continue this great work Tuesday against Syracuse at Meachem Rink and Thursday against Rome Free Academy at Kennedy Arena. Meanwhile, a big week awaits C-NS, starting Monday against RFA and concluding Friday against reigning state Division I champion West Genesee at Shove Park, with a visit from Watertown IHC in between.
Liverpool, C-NS girls win ahead of early showdown by Phil Blackwell
The last time the Liverpool and CiceroNorth Syracuse girls basketball teams were on the same floor, it was at SRC Arena and the Warriors were celebrating as it had succeeded the Northstars as Section III Class AA champions. Now they were together again, just part of a busy opening stretch for the Warriors, who were playing its third game in four days counting its weekend clashes with Horseheads and Hilton in the Zebra Classic. Both played last Tuesday night – and both won big, Liverpool bashing Nottingham 62-
21 and C-NS doing the same to East Syracuse Minoa All that the Warriors did against a Nottingham side back at the top level after not fielding a varsity team in 2022-23 was jump out 21-1 in the first quarter and keep building from there. By herself, A’briyah Cunningham outscored the Bulldogs, earning a total of 23 points. Maura Woods helped out with 10 points, while Giselle Cruz had eight points and Gracie Sleeth got six points. It was on this same night that C-NS got its season underway, venturing to East Syracuse Minoa and overwhelming the Spartans, especially in the middle stages of a 65-31 victory.
Already with a 15-8 advantage, all that the Northstars did in the second and third quarters was outscore the Spartans 36-9, all while spreading its production around. Kat McRobbie-Taru led C-NS with 16 points, but Leah Benedict and Olivia Cook were close behind, each netting 11 points, while sophomore Meadow Werts had eight points in her varsity debut and Jilly Howell added six points. The first half of the Zebra Classic for Liverpool proved a thriller as it edged Horseheads 58-57, a game not decided until the final seconds. Trailing 30-25 at halftime as the visitors hit
on seven 3-pointers, the Warriors outscored the Blue Rangers 25-17 in a wild third quarter to go out in front, only to see Horseheads make its way back down the stretch and, with a late 3-pointer, take a 57-56 lead. Liverpool worked the clock down until it got a shot, which missed. However, Cunningham grabbed the rebound and, with seven seconds to play, notched the go-ahead basket that the Blue Raiders could not answer. Cunningham led with 17 points and Kaylyn Sweeney got 10 points, with Sleeth and Angelina Kohler each getting nine points and Sophie Sageer managing eight points.
