Caz girls break four school records at state qualifier

Cazenovia girls indoor track and field standout Susie Pittman broke her own school record in the pole vault, clearing 10 feet 6 inches, and won that event during last Wednesday’s Section III state qualifying meet at SRC Arena.

by Phil Blackwell Helped in no small part by four school records and 12 season-best performances, the Cazenovia girls indoor track and field team closed its latest special season with a particular bang. The Lakers were a featured part of last Wednesday’s Section III state qualifying meet at SRC Arena, most notably Susie Pittman, who broke three of those school records and prevailed in her specialty, the pole vault. Earning first-team All-Central New York honors, Pittman won the pole vault with a school-record leap of 10 feet 6 inches. She dominated the field, clearing each height on the first attempt and being the only vaulter to exceed 10 feet. This was the fourth time this season that Pittman has set a new record in the pole vault, vastly upending the old mark

of 9’6” which had stood for 20 years. Pittman also broke a 13 year-old schoo mark at 400 meters as she ran the opening leg of the Lakers’ 4x400 meter relay in 1:00.42, topping the old mark of 1:01.0 that had stood since 2011. She was part of a fabulous foursome with Reid McMurtrie (1:00.72), Izzy StromerGalley (1:02.17) and Meghan Mehlbaum (1:03.70) all running personal best times to set a new school record. The group had broken the existing 2012 mark of 4:16.79 earlier this winter with a time of 4:13.12, then shattered that mark again with a new record time of 4:07.03 at the qualifier. Cazenovia finished less than a second behind the powerhouse Cicero-North Syracuse squad (4:06.28) in the overall 4x400, but the elation over the new mark was tempered with the disappointment of missing Records l Page 5

From Scratch Town tables proposed legislation Self-taught cooks start new business By kate Hill Staff Writer For the past few months, Caroline Horvatits and Anna Brummeler have been working to bring small-batch food service experiences to the Cazenovia community through their new business, From Scratch Kitchen and Farm. Until further notice, the self-taught cooks will be taking over the kitchen at Loka Leaf Tea Lounge every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to prepare and serve made-from-scratch dishes developed with health and sustainability in mind. Each From Scratch menu is tailored to the season and utilizes as many ingredients from local farms as possible. The Sunday “Kitchen Takeover” offerings are prepared in limited quantities and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Weekly menus are released

on Wednesdays. Horvatits and Brummeler met working at a coffee shop while studying at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. “We got to know each other in between pouring lattes and serving up food,” said Horvatits. “We have been cooking and working in food service part-time for over a decade. When I was 15 years old, I was diagnosed with a chronic health condition, and I began healing myself through food and diet. At this point, I can look back and say that this was the true beginning to my passion for food.” According to Horvatits, she and Brummeler have both honed their skills in the kitchen over the past couple of years. In 2022, the pair moved to the Cazenovia area with a business idea in mind and the intention of setting up and operating a small “hobby

farm” in Fenner. “In the first year, we set up a small vegetable garden and we were thrilled to harvest all that we could,” recalled Horvatits. “This felt like a luxury coming from city living. Being able to pick a vegetable from our own garden and cook with it was love at first sight. In 2023, we expanded our farm by growing everything from seed, raising a flock of chickens, inoculating mushroom logs, preserving food, and turning the gears to our business.” From Scratch Kitchen and Farm was officially launched in December 2023. “Caroline brings a passion that has driven this business from the very start,” said Brummeler. “Working on this together has allowed each of us to excel in our respective strengths. I enjoy taking on the visionary and creative side of the business From Scratch l Page 11

regarding mobile service facilities BY KATE HILL STAFF WRITER

On Feb. 12, the Cazenovia Town Board held a public hearing on a proposed local law to amend the town code with respect to commercial mobile service facilities. The proposed local law explains that while the federal government has regulated the commercial mobile industry, it has given local governments the power to regulate uses with regard to placement, construction, and other issues. According to the proposed legislation, the purpose of the commercial mobile service facilities section of the town code is “to establish predictable and balanced regulations for the siting of telecommunication facilities in order to accommodate the growth of such facilities while protecting the public against any adverse impacts on aesthetic resources and the public safety and welfare. The Town of Cazenovia wants to accommodate the need for telecommunications facilities while regulating their location and number, minimizing adverse visual impacts through proper design, siting and screening, avoiding potential physical damage to adjacent properties, and encouraging joint use of

tower structures.” The section is also intended to minimize the number of telecommunications towers in the community by encouraging the shared use of existing and future towers and the use of existing tall buildings and other high structures to further minimize adverse visual effects from telecommunications towers. “This section is not intended to prohibit or have the effect of prohibiting the provision of personal wireless services, nor shall it be used to unreasonably discriminate among the providers of functionally equivalent services consistent with current federal regulations,” the proposed local law states. Randy Nash, a resident of Rippleton Road, started off the public hearing by noting that he and other interested citizens submitted “quite a bit of information” for the town to consider when rewriting the commercial mobile service facilities section of the town code. One of the group’s major focus areas, according to Nash, was tower height. Nash questioned why the changes proposed by the group regarding tower height regulations had been left out of the proposed local law. Amendment l Page 9

Winter pet care

All in all, for the Central New York region, this has been a fairly mild winter by most any measure. While there has been some snow and certainly some days of extreme cold weather and bitter winds, compared to some years, this winter hasn’t been all that bad. While the weather might not be as intense as we are used to, it is likely we are still doing many of the usual things to be prepared when we go out and we are wearing warmer clothes, coats, hats, gloves and other items of this nature to make sure we are keeping ourselves safe and warm. But for those of us with pets, it is also important to remember that they are also subject to the conditions outdoors. A good rule of thumb is that if we are cold chances are they are cold too. Best Friends Animal Society is a national animal welfare organization. The organization shared some tips for pet owners to be prepared and help keep their four legged friends safe in the winter. According to Best Friends Animal Society these tips include the following: Keep your pets inside during extreme temperatures. Once the temperature drops below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, pets are at risk of developing hypothermia or frostbite. Dogs and cats’ paws, ears, and tails are the most common areas that pets can develop frostbite – this increases if those areas are wet. If a pet needs to spend time outside during extreme temperatures, keep both walks and potty breaks short. Use plastic water bowls for outdoors. A pet’s tongue may stick to metal, and they could injure themselves when trying to pull away. Chemicals used to melt snow and ice can injure or irritate the pads of pet’s feet. Look for petfriendly ice melt products and steer clear of anti-freeze which is toxic to pets. Gently wipe their feet with a damp towel once they are back inside to avoid a trip to the veterinarian. Wearing boots can protect paws from irritating salt on the street. Many dogs, particularly those with short coats, will be more comfortable if they have a sweater or coat on. If a dog frequently lifts their paws, whines or stops during walks, it is probably because their feet are cold. Be particularly careful when taking older, arthritic animals and small pets outside. They may become stiff and tender quickly and often find it difficult to walk on the snow or ice. Don’t let dogs off the leash during a snowstorm. No matter how much they want to play in the snow, they can easily lose their scent and become lost. Always make sure dogs are wearing ID tags and are microchipped before you take them out. Always check under the hood of a car’s engine - a favorite hiding space for community cats. Check underneath a car, bang on the hood, and honk the horn before starting the engine to make sure a cat hasn’t taken up temporary housing there. By keeping these steps in mind, we can help keep our pets a little safer and more comfortable no matter what kind of weather we have this winter.

A ‘fine’ line

A

s I was sitting in the waiting area where I used to buy my husband’s shirts, a gentleman came in and sat down across from me, visibly unwell. I smiled and said hello, which seemed the polite thing to do. He, with an audible sigh, began to share a rather harrowing list of symptoms. Before he could finish his inventory of woe, the nurse called his name and asked the conventional “How are you today?” This poor soul with more problems than I could count, answered, “Fine.” When another nurse asked me the same question, I answered “Fine” too. Duh! I haven’t been fine since Feb. 22, 2018, when a surgeon who was replacing my right hip broke my femur. The long tale that wags that story is far too teeth-gnashing for me to relate, but safe to say, it was the beginning, if not the origination, of a cascade of years of feeling really …how shall I put this? Peeked? A bit off? Unwell? Poorly? No! Better descriptors would be lousy, crappy, really yucky, precipitating “what did I do in a past life to deserve this?” thoughts. I, like so many, did a dance with Covid. I can remember driving to the doctor’s office in Fayetteville. I found myself wandering down a strange hallway segregated from others to accommodate the examination of possible Covid carriers. And yes, I did have the virus and was sent home with instructions to monitor how I felt and to be ready to call 911. But that was an unusual occurrence compared to what had become an almost daily episode of “I don’t feel well.” I accumulated a rather daunting phalanx of physicians, from my PCP (two retired,) a gynecologist, an endocrinologist, two gastroenterologists, an otolaryngologist, a pain doctor, a chiropractor, a dermatologist and several other ologists, none of whom could help me lessen the regularity of feeling awful. I had diagnoses that ranged from Vitamin D deficiency to any number of maladies that were described with

letters, UTI, URI, IBS, L, M, N, O, P… Or vague “isms” - put the following terms in a sentence: hyperparathyroidism and Trendelenburg gait and see what you come up with. My social life has disintegrated to basically nothing. I have cancelled, postponed or put on the back burner eating out, adult beverages and dessert on the porch, dinner parties, going to the library, shopping or visiting mostly any place because something isn’t quite right. Examples of that awful feeling can vary from hour to hour and day to day, but leg and back pain with the added fillip of vertigo and its side effects would be a good start. The vertigo part is sort of underwhelming until you actually experience it. Living in a world that is wobbly where you have to hold on to furniture to get to the bathroom is not fun. Losing consciousness because you got up from sitting down without doing so in slow motion is even less fun. So, what did I do? First of all, as a lifelong hypochondriac with a vast knowledge of medicine garnered from my long love affair with TV medical shows, there was self-medication. My self-medication of choice is baking and searching the internet for recipes that would produce the kind of deliciousness that would focus my attention on producing gustatory pleasure rather than on the off-putting symptoms that plague most days. This, of course, only produced a larger version of me and my complaints. It seemed that my disdain for the added weight has been only superseded by my response, which is to seek more delicious food to assuage my feeling angry or sorry for my weight gain. I know. I know! As I search for what is probably not possible at my age, some kind of healing …the beat goes on. You can learn from anything. I would be stingy if I didn’t share a short recipe for deliciousness (see sidebar) that I got from my daughter. It is beyond tasty and, with some convoluted thinking, can be absolved from the blame of adding more pounds. Amidst my daily challenge to sanity, there is so much good.

Ramblings from the empty nest

Emily’s roasted olives 1. Gather assorted olives without pits. 2. Nestle the olives of choice in good olive oil. The amount of oil should be determined by how you will use the resulting infused oil for other things. 3. Add the following: Finely dices shallots, fresh thyme, orange zest, whole garlic cloves, a few tablespoons of balsamic vinegar, hot pepper, salt and black pepper to taste. 4. Roast in your oven set at 375 degrees for a half hour. Allow to cool and serve with crusty bread. A glass of red wine wouldn’t hurt either.

My daughter-in-law finished her radiation treatments; my son came home to spend Super Bowl Sunday with his father, eating a feast that I produced for them; my daughter calls regularly to chat and visits to help as needed; my grandsons are all doing well, happy and healthy; my spouse produced another beautiful drawing while at his Urban Sketchers meeting; I got Wordle in three twice last week; the last of the kittens that my neighbor and I took care of was placed in its forever home (thanks to Lauren Bachiller;) and the sun is out today! I am making stuffed shells for dinner tonight. But I will only eat one and be satisfied with a lot of salad. So, having gotten this off my chest, how will I answer the question, “How are you today?” In the same way… ”Fine.” Ann Ferro is a mother, a grandmother and a retired social studies teacher. While still figuring out what she wants to be when she grows up, she lives in Marcellus with lots of books, a spouse and a large orange cat.

CNYSPCA PET OF THE WEEK

Meet Tex and Mex need a home

by Donna Newman photo provided by the CNYSPCA Tex and Mex are a pair of male guinea pigs who came to the shelter when their family could no longer care for them. Guinea pigs are cute, soft, and squeaky and make great pets for the right family. Tex is black and is five years old, and Mex is brown and is nine months old. They’re a bonded pair and need to be adopted together. Do your research before adopting; guinea pigs are social creatures who require space, attention, cleaning, and medical care to be happy. If you’re looking to add some spice to your life, meet Tex and Mex today! In order to adopt, you must fill out an application, pay an adoption fee, and have your pets up to date on their rabies vaccines. All adopted cats and dogs (but not guinea pigs!) are spayed or neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on their vaccinations before they go home. The CNY SPCA is located at 5878 E. Molloy Road, Syracuse. For more information about adoption, call 315-454-4479, email frontdesk1@cnyspca.org, or visit cnyspca.org.

Years Ago in History

The Clark sensation

By Cindy Bell Tobey

125 Years Ago – Feb. 23, 1899

Iowa Hawkeyes fans got their wish early on Thursday night and, in some Random instances, gladly paid a lot to witness it. Thoughts Here, as throughout this remarkable winter, getting a ticket Phil Blackwell required snapping it up really early, months in advance, or going into the secondary market and forking over $200 – for a cheap seat. Courtside, it went well into four figures. All for a very good reason, though. Eight points was all Caitlin Clark needed to surpass Kelsey Plum and climb to the top of the scoring list in the history of women’s college basketball. Even with all the road game sellouts and incredible buzz Clark’s very presence generates, it was fitting and proper that she set her record in Iowa City, where nothing but cheers rained down once those eight points were attained – on her first three shots of the game. And the record-breaker? of course it was a 3-pointer, just past midcourt, on the logo, a Clark specialty that, along with her aggressive drives to the basket and great passing ability (she also has more tha n 1,000 career assists), turned her into America’s best sports phenomenon. Clark is well on her way to surpassing Pete Maravich and the great Lynette Woodard (she had 3,649 points at Kansas) to have the all-time mark regardless of gender. It also brings forth, yet again, the way that women’s basketball, and women’s sports in general, continues to grow and flourish. But it’s just one example. So much more is going on, right close to home, that, if you haven’t yet seen it in person, it’s about time you did. A lot of it is at the college level. SU has a top-20 women’s hoops program and a player, Dyashia Fair, who also has 3,000 career points. The Orange just might get a couple of NCAA Tournament games at home. Get that, and who knows how far SU can go? They’re also starting to play Division I women’s lacrosse at Le Moyne, and the Dolphins won the first time it played a majorcollege opponent - and it was California. This on top of a top-10 women’s program on the SU hill. It spreads to the hockey rink, too, in ways that a few years ago seemed quite unlikely. I was so pleased, back on Feb. 6, to see a big crowd at Onondaga Nation Arena for the girls sectional hockey final between Skaneateles and Oswego, a sign of the sport’s continued growth. They held the state “Frozen Four” at the new Nexus Center in Utica - where, in April, they will host the latest edition of the World Championships. What a great opportunity for this area to see the best in the sport, get inspired and get a chance to dream. On and on it goes throughout the spring and summer, with softball exploding in popularity and, come July, this thing called the Olympics in Paris, with Simone Biles, Katie Ledecky and so much more we don’t yet know about, but likely will by the time the flame goes out. Put it all together, and it’s reason enough to cast aside men’s sports and all the noise and fury that can surround it, not to mention the talk of contracts, legacies and other trivia. At least for now, it all comes back to Clark. As many records as she holds, she could put them completely out of any mortal’s reach if she returns to Iowa with her remaining year of eligibility and waits for the WNBA. Another season in Black and Gold would bring another tour of outsized attention, with every big program in the country begging for a Clark appearance and a guaranteed sellout. Plus, if the Hawkeyes don’t win it all, it might have a better team in 2024-25. Then again, as Breanna Stewart or Paige Bueckers can tell you, a bad injury can happen anytime, anywhere. There’s always that risk. Even at her greatest, Clark might never draw 100 million-plus TV audiences the way a recent football game constantly showing a prominent female spectator did. Then again, the show Caitlin Clark has put on, in Iowa and everywhere else, is just as special, and what’s most amazing is that the best parts might still lie ahead. Phil Blackwell is sports editor at Eagle News. He can be reached at pblackwell@ eaglenewsonline.com.

Half of the shipment of 1,500 yearling rainbow trout ordered for Cazenovia lake by Rev. J. L. Meagher, were received from the Caledonia state hatchery yesterday, and placed in the lake at a point not far from the island, that being deemed the most natural breeding ground for them. The other half will arrive at 8:40 tomorrow afternoon, and will deposited in the same place. They come in charge of an attendant from the hatchery, and those received yesterday came through in fine condition without the loss of a single fish.

100 Years Ago – Feb. 21, 1924

Next Tuesday afternoon is the day scheduled for the third annual community winter picnic under the auspices of the Cazenovia Outdoor Club, to be held at Shelter Valley near the old woolen mill property about a mile and a half north of Cazenovia village on the gorge road. More than 500 attended the picnic held last year at the same place and if the weather is favorable, it is hoped that the attendance will be as large or larger this year. This is a community affair. It is not limited to Cazenovia people. Everybody from all the country around is invited, including town of Nelson and town of Fenner people, the folks from New Woodstock and all the farmers from this whole section and their families. Everybody goes and have a good time. It is expected that the Union school and most of the stores will close at noon for the rest of the day so that the whole community may join together in enjoying a real holiday. At Shelter Valley is a splendid hill for skiing and tobogganing, and the shoeing is good. Those who don’t take part in winter sports will enjoy watching the others take the tumbles. Get your friends to go with you. You will have a good time.

75 Years Ago – Feb. 24, 1949

Early in January while Lawrence Ames was buzzing some maples the sap ran so freely it gummed up the saw. The next day he decided to tap a few trees. On Jan. 9 he put out 80 buckets. Although the sap didn’t run very good, he left them out. But on Feb. 17 the sap started to run so he put out 250 more buckets. By last Saturday night, the 19th, Mrs. Ames had boiled down 12 gallons of syrup. “One gallon of syrup makes about eight pounds of sugar,” she says. But if this weather keeps up for long the trees will soon bud and that will end the sap run. Folks in the West and South may be surprised to read about New Yorkers tapping trees so early. We certainly have had an unusual winter here but perhaps we better not crow yet as Memorial Day May 30 is a long way off and some old timers have told us of snow on these Nelson hills as late as July 4th.

55 Years Ago – Feb. 19, 1969

Cazenovia’s 51 year experiment in political togetherness will come to an end next Monday night. The union caucus of Cazenovia Village will be discarded this year in favor of party caucuses by the Republicans and Democrats to nominate candidates for two village trustee terms and for mayor. Under the Union caucus system, eligible village voters met to approve one slate of unopposed candidates for offices to be elected. The system was arranged so that the village board would always contain two Republicans and two Democrats, with the political affiliation of the mayoral office to alternate with each two-year term.

a trip to the state meet by nine-hundredths of a second as they missed the elite “super standard” of 4:06.94. Maddy Rothfeld was another Laker star to leave her mark on the record book during the historic meet, smashing her own mark of 37’4” in the weight throw set just a week earlier by nearly five feet. Rothfeld advanced to the finals with a powerful effort of 38’4 1/4” and then proceeded to improve upon that twice more, ending with an exceptional 42’1”on her final throw. She finished third in the section, just one place from a trip to the state meet that went to Skaneateles’ Mara Stanton, who went 42’7”. Rothfeld also capped an exceptional season in the shot put, reaching the finals and finishing fifth with 32’ 3/4”. While short of her sectional Class B-2 champion personal best performance of 33’9” set a week earlier, it was still an excellent capstone performance for the Senior star.

Maura Phillips led Cazenovia to a season best time in the 4x800 meter relay, running a personal best 800-meter split of 2:29.4. It was a well-balanced performance as Reid McMurtie (2:31.0), Olivia Ruddy (2:33.8) and Lily Kogut (personal best of 2:34.6) combined for 10:08.74 and fourth place. Claire Marris earned two personal bests on the night as she triple jumped 34’6 3/4” to finish in the top 10 in the section and returned to lead off the 4x200 meter relay with a best-ever split of 27.6 seconds. She combined with Ella Gale, Caroline Mehlbaum and Dinah Gifford to go 1:55.14 and finish ninth in the section. Audie Spring represented the Lakers in the long jump to follow up on her Class B-2 champion effort in the event a week earlier and went 14’10 1/2” here, with StromerGalley also contesting the 55-meter dash (7.84 seconds) and Marris the 55 hurdles. In total, 18 members of the Cazenovia squad earned a trip to the elite meet in 12 of the 16 events.

Cazenovia Republican

Amendment l

From page 1

He pointed to a specific provision in the proposed local law that requires an applicant to submit photo documentation to demonstrate that no more than 20 feet of the structure and associated antenna are visible from all residential properties within a half mile of the site at the time of application to the town. “This doesn’t say the same thing as the language that we sent in,” Nash said. He explained that when considering tower height, the group of interested citizens contemplated how best to deal with camouflage towers. According to Nash, a camouflage tower can only be effectively hidden if it protrudes no more than 20 feet above the tree line. “Once you start going higher than that, it starts becoming something that is [visible] on the landscape,” Nash said. He then remarked that the language included in the proposed local law does not mean that a tower can only be 20 feet above the tree line; it just means that from half a mile away, a person can only see 20 feet of the tower above the tree line. To emphasize the difference between the language in the proposed local law and the language submitted by the group of interested citizens, Nash referred to a telecommunications tower just west of New Woodstock that is “easily 80 to 100 feet above the tree line.” He said he went to every house within a half mile of that tower to assess the visibility of the structure. “Not one of those houses sees 20 feet of that tower,” Nash reported. “In fact, all of them except one don’t even see the tower within that half mile. Obviously, a tower 100 feet above the tree line, no matter how many fake pine tree limbs you put on it, is going to be detrimental to the landscape. In fact, all the people within a half mile don’t see it, but the rest of New Woodstock and most of Cazenovia sees that tower. So, this language [doesn’t] work for camouflage towers.” He suggested that the specific language regarding tower height should be discussed further before the town board votes on the proposed law. “I’m pretty sure we can come up with some language that everybody would be happy with,” Nash said. Brendan Rigby, a resident of Cobb Hill Notice oflanguage FormationreRoad, agreed that the proposed of Amaya Chic, LLC, a garding tower height is Domestic perhaps Limited “not protecLiability Company (LLC). Eagle News • CNY’s Community News Source “We do appreciate the amount of time and effort that has gone into this,” Rigby said. “You have met with us on multiple occasions, and many of the things that we suggested [did] get incorporated here. I do think that the proposed legislation is a marked improvement over the current law, and I really do appreciate that. It’s just some of these [more] subtle points here that we are revisiting.” In response to the public input, Town Attorney John Langey commented that he was able to incorporate about 80 to 90 percent of the interested citizens’ proposed changes into the law with no problem. “[However, when reading] some of the language, particularly about what you folks were talking about, I wasn’t sure how that was going to operate in the real world, or what the courts might say, or what the industry might try to do to challenge it,” Langey said. The town attorney also explained that the board had two options to consider that evening. “The board can [table] it tonight and have more meetings to decide if you want some different language,” he said. “Or you can adopt what has been presented to you tonight after you hear everybody on this public hearing and then maybe continue to work on it, like we [did] with the solar law. We adopted it and then we tuned it up a few months later for a few other things that we wanted. So those are options for you. Nothing is final tonight, whether they adopt it or not.” Following a brief discussion, the board voted to close the public hearing and table the resolution to enact the proposed local law. If any changes are made to the proposed law over the next month, a new public hearing will be opened. In other news The town board awarded the bid for the proposed Ridge Road Highway and Drainage Improvements project to Cunningham Excavation, Inc. The total bid was for $302,113. “This will be subject to satisfactory review by the town attorney and confirmation of all necessary permits and financing,” said Supervisor Kyle Reger. The town board also authorized the establishment of a Major Renewable Energy Facility Committee consisting of the following community representatives: Sheila Fallon of the town board, Robert Ridler of the town planning board, Paul Curtin of the Cazenovia Advisory Conservation Commission, and Jennifer Wong of the Cazenovia Preservation DMCJ Partners, LLC, Foundation. gives you distance and target information to help you sink your putt. Also, by not looking down at the ball, you don’t have to spend your mental energy focusing on mechanics. Instead, you develop trust that your mechanics will hold up and perform a successful putt just like a basketball player trusts his shooting mechanics will hold up while he focuses on the rim. Instructions… * Measure a 3 foot putt. * Set up to the ball like normal, square the putter face to your line. * Now look at the hole. * Make the putting stroke and trust it. * Make 5 putts like this from 3, 5, 7, 9, & 12 feet. * Then make 5 putts like this from 15, 18, & 21 feet. * And finally, work on lag putts from 25-50 feet just trying to get within a few feet of the hole. Bianco is first Caz boys player to 1,000 points by Phil Blackwell

Even with some strong teams and tremendous athletes among its rosters in seasons past, Cazenovia boys basketball has never experienced what it has with Ben Bianco on the court. Further proof of this was illustrated last Thursday night when Bianco became the first player in the Lakers’ program history to reach the 1,000 career point mark – and did it during a thrilling 8480 overtime victory over Jordan-Elbridge. Entering the game close to that mark, Bianco reached it by sinking a 3-pointer in the first quarter, after which the game was stopped to acknowledge Bianco’s accomplishment with a commemorative ball and poster. It happened as Cazenovia was trading baskets with J-E, a team it beat 62-38 just two weeks earlier at Buckley Gym, and a similar type of game appeared at hand when the Lakers went on a secondquarter tear and took a

41-28 lead to the break. J-E didn’t go away, though, chipping away at the margin and then, led by the duo of Nolan Brunelle and Preston Murray, outscoring Cazenovia 22-11 in the fourth quarter to catch up. They went to overtime 68-68, and four extra minutes did not solve anything. Only in the second OT did the Lakers go back in front for good, its defense limiting the Eagles to just four points. Effective at the freethrow line (it hit 19 of 25 foul shots), Cazenovia saw Bianco and Edmond Richardson combine for 14 of those successful attempts at the line. Bianco finished with 35 points, the fifth time this season he’s gone past the 30-point mark. Richardson earned 16 points, with Bobby Livingston earning 13 points and Alex Kuper adding nine points. In defeat, Brunelle, who has also surpassed 1,000 career points and is just a sophomore, poured in 37 points, including

Cazenovia boys basketball junior Ben Bianco celebrates with his family his 1,000th career point earned in last Thursday’s 84-80, double-overtime win over Jordan-Elbridge. Bianco is the first player in Lakers program history to get to the 1,000-point mark. seven 3-pointers, while Murray got 24 points, but no other J-E player had more than six points. Cazenovia ended up with the no. 10 seed for the Section III Class B

playoffs and, in its roundof-16 game Wednesday night, would face no. 7 seed Phoenix, a team with which it split two close regular-season games. This happened a night

after Chittenango, as the no. 4 seed in Class A, meets no. 13 seed VernonVerona-Sherrill in its opening-round game, the winner to get Camden or Indian River in the quar-

terfinals later in the week. The Bears’ scheduled regular-season finale against East Syracuse Minoa last Friday was canceled due to winter weather.

Boys volleyball Bears finish unbeaten regular season by Phil Blackwell

Put to the test in the last week of its regular season, the Chittenango boys volleyball team passed through all of it and made it to the Section III winter playoffs without a blemish. The key match was last Monday’s showdown with Sauquoit Valley. At the time, not only were both teams unbeaten (the Bears 14-0, Sauquoit 15-0), but of those 29 wins, 28 of them were sweeps. It was Chittenango that would maintain its perfect run, in large measure due to what happened in the opening set. Both teams traded runs, and five different set points were squandered, before the Bears, at 28-28, were able to get back the serve and then, on the sixth set-point attempt, end it 30-28. From there, it was 25-16 and 25-18 in

the ensuing two sets, with Cole Thomas, as usual, at the forefront, recording 35 assists to go with seven digs, four aces, three blocks and two kills. On a well-balanced front line, Rodger Mulholland led with 11 kills, five digs and two blocks, while Ryan Thousand had 10 kills and four digs. Jackson Blaszkow added nine kills and two blocks, Kyle Peryer getting six kills and two blocks as Jacob Wagner had four kills and four assists. Andrew Uryniak and Seth Boulter each had six digs. A day later, it finally happened – the Bears lost a set, at the expense of Central Valley Academy, and only in the third set after Chittenango took the opening sets 25-18 and 25-20. Armed with a 13-2 record, the Thunder didn’t go away, instead laying claim to that third set in another 25-20 deci-

sion. All that did, though, was provoke the Bears, who blitzed CVA 25-11 in the fourth to end it. Thousand had 12 kills and eight digs, Blaszkow adding 10 kills, three aces and nine digs. Wagner improved to seven kills and two blocks, Mulholland getting four kills, three aces, four assists and nine digs as Thomas fed all of them with 26 assists, to go with four kills and seven digs. Uryniak earned six digs. Chittenango’s girls volleyball team would not join the boys as possible sectional champions, the no. 3 seed Bears ousted by no. 2 seed Christian Brothers Academy in last Wednesday’s sectional semifinal. Having lost twice to the Brothers in January (each of them four-set decisions), the Bears won a close opening set 25-23, but could not hold on to that advantage,

Hockey Lakers take playoff overtime loss to IHC by Phil Blackwell

Everything was going the way of the Cazenovia ice hockey team headed into overtime of last Thursday night’s Section III Division I quarterfinal against Watertown IHC at the Morrisville State IcePlex. Once down two goals, the no. 3 seed Lakers had rallied to catch the no. 6 seed Cavaliers, and were controlling the flow of play against an opponent playing for the second time in as many nights. One more successful attack, and Cazenovia would find itself in the semifinal round. Yet IHC managed to defy all these trends and, with Aidan Trimper finding the net in the extra period, prevailed 3-2 to end the Lakers’ championship dreams.

A rested Cazenovia side which had gone 7-2-1 in the second half of the regular season had reason to feel confident. Not only had it played well throughout the 2024 portion of its schedule, it had beaten IHC 5-2 back in early December in Watertown. Right away, though, the Lakers discovered how much IHD had improved, its defense clamping down on Cazenovia and holding it to just four shots during a scoreless first period. Cazenovia picked up its pressure in the second and, for the most part, camped in the Cavaliers’ end, ultimately taking 15 shots - but all of them were turned away by IHC goaltender Brodie MacGregor. What was more, when the Cavaliers did get chances, it capitalized. Trimper and Colin Whitmore each

struck for goals that gave IHC a 2-0 advantage going to the third. With its patience and resilience tested, the Lakers responded in the third period. Twice, Rhiley Montoya delivered well-placed passes that Jake Hightchew and Jack Donlin turned into goals, firing up the home crowd and tying the game. But the long intermission between regulation and OT allowed IHC to regroup, and in six-plus minutes of overtime the Cavaliers had a fair share of chances while again turning back the Lakers. Then Trimper, at the 6:39 mark, found his way to the net and put it past Ezra Stahlberg, winning the game for IHC. Cazenovia concluded with a record of 13-7-1.

Lakers’ Frisbie advances to state meet in triple jump by Phil Blackwell

A season full of victories and milestones for the Cazenovia boys indoor track and field team will include Connor Frisbie taking part in early March’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships on Staten Island. Frisbie earned his spot in the triple jump even before Wednesday’s Section III state qualifying meet at SRC Arena, site of so many Lakers triumphs this winter that included a lopsided victory in the Feb. 7 sectional Class B-2 meet. A season-best 44 feet 2 inches had topped the state qualifying standard of 43’6” by a comfortable margin, but Frisbie still aimed to win here, and nearly

did so. With a top attempt of 42’8”, Frisbie was best among small schools and beaten only in the overall competition by Liverpool’s Ny’Quez Madison, who finished with 43’9” but has gone 44’6 1/4” this season. Elsewhere, Cazenovia had Jaden Kaplan, Finn Worthington, Braden Carnahan and Wyatt Scott record a fourth-place finish in the 4x200 relay in 1:35.80, less than a second from the state qualifying standard of 1:34.94. Jake Woolbert set a new season mark in the 3,200-meter run in 10:05.88 and finished 10th before he joined Caleb Gilmore, Eddie Comeau and Tristan Field-Bradley for a time of 8:48.46 and sixth place in the 4x800 relay.

Individually, Killian Blouin cleared 11’6” in the pole vault for eighth place, not quite able to top 12 feet and advance furthr, while Carnahan posted 8.73 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles. Scott, with his long jump of 20’3 3/4”, finished eighth, while Carnahan was 10th with 20’ 3/4”. Frisbie and Eliot Comeau both cleared 5’8” in the high jump, with Jonathan Sweet earning a top weight throw of 46’11 1/2”. Chittenango got its best finish from Sean Eiffe in the boys shot put, where he threw it 44’9 1/2” to set a new personal mark and rise to eighth place. Hannah Wagner went 7.80 seconds in the girls 55-meter dash.

CBA winning the second set 26-16. The pivotal third set went 25-21 in the Brothers’ favor and it went on to take the fourth set 25-9 as Carleah Morgia put away 19 kills, with Naveah Bacheyie adding seven kills and six blocks, plus four aces and seven digs. On CBA’s back line, Josie Lachut dished out 31 assists, with Josie DePalma picking up 23 digs and Julie Zdep earning 10 digs. For the Bears, who finished 13-6 (three of the defeats to CBA), Julia Spencer and Stephanie Huckabee each had eight kills and combined for 23 digs, Sydney Martin earning 10 assists and four aces and Alex Sylstra adding nine assists. Cate McGork had five assists and two blocks to complement Spencer’s three blocks. CBA would go on to sweep Clinton in Saturday’s final at Watertown, earning its first sectional title since 2000.

Caz swimmers contribute to F-M team’s season by Phil Blackwell

What has turned into a new and highly successful tradition has continued this winter with Cazenovia High School students contributing to the success of the Fayetteville-Manlius swim teams. In this case, it was the boys Hornets who benefited most from the presence of Max Vidakovic, a senior who would reach several finals, by himself and with teammates, during last Wednesday’s Section III Class A championships at Nottingham High School. F-M finished 5-2 overall in the regular season, second in the SCAC Metro division behind unbeaten Baldwinsville. Vidakovic was part of a 200 freestyle relay side that posted 1:35.93 to reside in the sectional top 10 while he also earned a best time of 57.76 seconds in the 100 butterfly. Good as this was, how Vidakovic performed at the sectional meet exceeded it, especially in the Class A portion. In his specialty, the 100 butterfly, Vidakovic roared to a time of 54.99 seconds, which put him third, less than a second behind the 54.01 from Jamesville-DeWitt/CBA’s Lesha Kabunov. Liverpool’s Jack Cavallerano pulled away to win in 50.07. Then, in Friday’s state qualifier, Vidakovic joined F-M’s James Cao, Anthony Bottar and Derick Wang to finish sixth in 1:43.53 before going 55.10 seconds in the 100 butterfly to finish fifth, again with Cavallerano (50.94) on top. In the 500 freestyle, Vidakovic finished 15th overall in a clocking of 5:23.53. Another Cazenovia senior, Harry Hausser, was on the team, along with two ninth-graders, Nolan Campgana and Connor Kelly. Hausser swam the 100 freestyle in 57.29 seconds to win that event when F-M defeated West Genesee on Jan. 4, and with Campagna, Kelly and Vidakovic, they helped F-M finish a close second (313.5 points) to B’ville (324 points) at the Class A meet.

Cazenovia girls basketball completes season 5-15 by Phil Blackwell

Saturday brought the release of the Section III basketball playoff brackets, with Chittenango part of the Class A field as the no. 12 seed, bound for a first-round game against no. 5 seed Central Valley Academy. Meanwhile, Cazenovia, holding a 5-15 record, opted not to take part in the Class B tournament, so last week’s pair of games would end its season. The Lakers took a setback last Monday with a 35-31 defeat to LaFayette, who broke out of a 15-15 halftime tie by inching out in front and staying there led by Ellie McElhannon and her 16 points. On the Lakers’ side, most of the production came from Sophie Rheaume, who fin-

while Caroline has a unique talent for flavor and cooking. The inspiration for our business stems [from] a strong desire to be more conscious about where our food comes from and how we can actively support our local food economies. We strike a great balance [that] has allowed us to pour our talents into many different aspects of the business.” From Scratch presented its first Cazenovia event, a dessert and tea tasting, on Dec. 29 at Loka Leaf Tea Lounge. The menu paired five Loka Leaf teas with five desserts — a chocolate almond cake topped with lavender-infused whipped cream, dark chocolate-dipped oatmeal lace cookies, a New York-style cheesecake topped with a foraged berry reduction, orange-glazed cranberry walnut shortbread, and decorated gingerbread cookies. Featured local ingredients included maple syrup and eggs from Local Roots, oats from Gianforte Farm, and lavender from Farmstead 1868. “We hope to encourage healthy eating by providing delicious food that is also good for you,” said Horvatits. “Being transparent with our ingredients and where we are getting our food is also very important to us. In just a short time, we have made some great connections with people in the community, local farms, and other small businesses. We hope to continue to do so throughout the years.” From Scratch held its first Loka Leaf Kitchen Takeover on Sunday, Feb. 11. The event, which Brummeler described as a major milestone for the business, was a significant undertaking that involved baking, prepping, cooking, and delivering food to customers. The brunch menu featured a gourmet breakfast sandwich, breakfast tacos, a seasonal frittata, a “Sweet Shroom Grilled Cheese,” winter squash soup, cranberry orange scones, poppy glazed brioche with jam filling, ginger

ished with 12 points, and Ella Baker, who got 11 points. Two nights later, in the season finale at Syracuse Academy of Science, the Lakers demonstrated plenty of fight and character in the course of a 60-53 defeat to the Atoms. SAS did its best work in the second quarter, outscoring Cazenovia 14-9, but for the entire second half the Atoms found it difficult to put the Lakers away. That was because Baker was amassing 16 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals, while Rheaume earned 14 points and six rebounds and Bess Johnson got 13 points and six rebounds. Avaya Weismore had seven points and seven rebounds. SAS held on, though, led by Shayla

citrus soda, pour-over coffee, and Loka Leaf teas. “In some ways, we had been holding our breath, unsure of what to expect,” Brummeler said on Feb. 16. “The response we received was more than encouraging. We gained incredible feedback and support this past week. We can’t wait to do it again this Sunday and do it better. We have made some adjustments and changes to improve service, and we are filled with confidence. We want to continue to surprise everyone with delicious food week after week.” Brummeler also commented that Mark and Julie Biviano, owners of the tea lounge, continue to be supportive and excited to collaborate with From Scratch. Earlier this month, Horvatits and Brummeler announced that From Scratch will be contracting with the Cazenovia Club for the 2024 summer season. Kevin Mann, a member of the Cazenovia Club Board of Governors, welcomed the new chefs to the team in the club’s February newsletter. “As advocates of local sourcing and quality cooking, they’re bringing an innovative dining experience to our club,” Mann wrote. “Their commitment to utilizing locally sourced ingredients and revitalizing a family farm in Fenner, NY, aligns perfectly with our community’s values. We look forward to tasting their creations and supporting their mission to connect local farms with our community.” In the months leading up to the summer season, Horvatits and Brummeler will be continuing the Kitchen Takeover series, catering a few events, and seeking opportunities to collaborate with local businesses. The cooks are also planning to provide food for the Center of Grace Wellness Center in Manlius.
