L’pool Police officers keeping an eye out for overweight trucks By RUSS TARBY CONTRIBUTING WRITER “What a difference,” exclaimed Liverpool Police Chief Jerry Unger last week. The difference he noticed is a significant decrease of truck traffic in the village. In his third full year as chief, Unger thinks that tractor-trailer traffic here has been reduced by as much as 85 percent since a

new local law went into effect last month banning vehicles weighing more than five tons. And, “knock on wood,” the chief added, the number of Onondaga Lake Parkway bridge strikes is also down. During the last week of January at least three trucks had been cited, but by Feb. 7, Unger said, “We’ve written at least 10 tickets total.” Truckers l Page 2

adopts increased Marina revamp planned LCSD tax exemptions County mulls spending $13.7m to repair retaining wall, expand docks BY RUSS TARBY CONTRIBUTING WRITER

The Onondaga Lake Park Marina is more than 90 years old, and it’s not aging gracefully. Its existing retaining wall is deteriorating daily. Sections of the wall have heaved and buckled as a result of typical weathering over nearly a century. “That wall needs to be replaced before it falls in,” said 4th District County Legislator Colleen Gunnip. “Repairs and replacements are required at this time,” states a request for funding submitted to County Executive Ryan McMahon by the Onondaga County Parks and Recreation Department. McMahon is proposing the county legislature approve a $13.7 million rehabilitation project to renovate the marina, which is located in Liverpool. The Onondaga Lake Marina Expansion and Rehabilitation project would expand marina dockage and add 25 docks specifically for short-term use. It would repair the retaining wall, add fueling stations, expand parking and utility enhancements such as shore power and lighting that will largely benefit the boating community. Parks and recreation has already engaged the services of an engineering firm to produce the design for the retaining wall repairs and replacements. “This is more of a renovation project because the marina will still have the same footprint,” said Legislator Gunnip who pointed to several other

The additional slips can be used for boaters to tie up for the day and visit the park or walk into the village for lunch.” Indeed, the multi-million-dollar project is believed to be a boon to the village. “This project would have a positive impact on the village of Liverpool’s local economy,” said Liverpool Chamber of Commerce Director Lucretia Hudzinski. “We are seeking letters of support

from members of the community and local businesses.” County Parks Commissioner Brian Kelley attended a session with the County Legislature on Feb 6, “And the marina passed unanimously,” he said. “The marina was built in 1933, and this is the first major rehabilitation project that has been done since then,” Kelley added. “We have added docks and such [at times], but this is the first major infrastructure project since its inception. We’re very excited about this.” Construction may start in the fall and could be completed by the spring of 2025, so there would be little disruption to boaters. The marina is currently at full capacity.

Heritage Hill Brewhouse announces northern expansion

Star Review

Ryan named new C-NS head football coach

Dan Palladino, the owner behind Heritage Hill Brewhouse, recently announced a new chapter in the brewery’s story with the grand opening of Heritage Hill North on Taft Road in North Syracuse at Sweetheart Corners. Palladino shared the news of Heritage Hill’s expansion into the vibrant North Syracuse community, setting up shop in the former Full Boar Brewery location on Taft Road. This marks the brand’s third location, following the success of Heritage Hill Brewhouse and the Palladino Farms bar and restaurant, which is now open in Terminal B of the Syracuse Airport. “At Heritage Hill, we’re not just opening a branch, we are celebrating the rich history and heritage of Syracuse,” Palladino said. “We’re stepping into the legacy that Full Boar Craft Brewery built, and we can’t wait to infuse the Heritage Hill spirit into this historic location.” The Heritage Hill name itself is a tribute to family history, the charming Town of Pompey, and their 179-year-old family farm. Known for honoring tradition, Heritage Hill opened the Central New York Brewseum in 2021 at their home location. Now, they are excited to embrace the historical significance of the oldest Plank Road in America at Sweetheart Corners, collaborating with the Onondaga Historical Association to celebrate this rich history within the tap room.

Continuing the legacy of Full Boar, Heritage Hill North will keep the mug club and trivia nights while introducing the distinct Heritage Hill ambiance and a menu featuring brewery-centric delights. “We’re crafting a unique experience with local ingredient-focused flatbreads, paninis, and charcuterie boards, perfectly complementing our award-winning craft beers, seltzers, and a full New York State bar,” Palladino said. “Expect New York’s best wines, spirits, canned cocktails, and ciders, along with exciting low-alcohol beverages and mocktails as well.” Founded in October 2018 on Palladino Farms, Heritage Hill Brewhouse has become synonymous with not only exceptional beers but also a stunning setting in the southern hills of Onondaga County. The new Heritage Hill North location will capture the essence of the farm through visuals, including a live video feed of animals and breathtaking nightly sunsets. The venue will be open for rentals, offering a captivating event space. Weekly entertainment, featuring trivia, live music, and the famed SU and Buffalo Bills watch parties, will keep the energy alive. Palladino anticipates the grand opening of Heritage Hill North in the spring, pending the receipt of their liquor license and the completion of renovations. cal businesses and trucking firms,” Unger noted, “and I’m sure they’ve seen the signs we’ve posted.” Placed at the village’s busiest intersections, five of the new signs say, “Trucks Over 5 Tons Use Truck Routes.” Other signs depict the image of a crossed-out truck and the words, “except local deliveries.” Several more signs point drivers to established truck routes. Unger praised Mayor Stacy Finney for the way she rolled out the new local law, drawing significant media coverage which informed both the public and the trucking community. For her part, Finney said she “defi-

nitely agreed” with Unger about the recent reduction of truck traffic. “Many of the citizens that have reached out to us would also agree.” Finney said. “And with time I am hoping it is far more than an 85 percent decrease.” As they’ve been enforcing the new law, LPD officers have found the truck operators to be a diverse but generally professional class of motorist, Unger said. “They’re primarily contract drivers,” the chief said. “We’re doing the best we can with limited resources,” Unger said. Although the mayor has recently sworn in two new full-time officers, Un-

ger’s department remains seriously understaffed. “We’re down to two part-timers and five full-timers,” Unger observed. “Ten years ago, in 2013, we had 12 part-time officers and four full-timers.” The new fines facing ticketed truckers will be $1,200 for trucks and their loads totaling between five tons and sevenand-a-half tons. For weights between seven-and-ahalf tons and 10 tons the penalty would be $1,700. The fines grow progressively higher for increased weights. Village Justice Anthony LaValle said he had not yet seen any of those tickets on his court docket.

System. The Liverpool VEX Robotics Competition is one of a series of VEX Robotics Competitions taking place internationally throughout the year. VEX Robotics is the world’s fastest growing competitive robot-

ics program for elementary schools, middle schools, high schools and colleges around the world, with more than 7,300 teams from 26 countries that participate in more than 400 VEX Robotics Competition events worldwide. The competition season culminates each spring, with the highly-anticipated VEX Robotics Competition World Championship event, uniting top qualifying teams from local, state and international VEX Robotics Competitions. “The technological economy of the future depends on equipping today’s youth with the tools necessary to become tomorrow’s leading innovators,” said Ray Dromms, a retired engineer of Welch Allyn/HillRom. “This tournament provides kids with an engaging hands-on learning experience that promotes a passion for science and technology – instilling in them an apprecia-

tion for the field and an enthusiasm to pursue STEM-related education and careers.” The VEX Robotics Competition is managed by the Robotics Education and Competition Foundation and serves as a vehicle for students to develop critical life skills such as teamwork, leadership and project management, honed through building robots and competing with like-minded students from the community in a pulse-pounding, exciting, non-traditional environment. The VEX Robotics Design System was built from the ground up and designed to be an affordable, accessible and scalable platform used to teach science, technology, engineering and math education worldwide. More information about the VEX Robotics Competition is available at Roboticseducation.org or at RobotEvents.com.

Anyone who was going to follow Dave Kline as Cicero-North Syracuse High School’s varsity football coach was going to have a tough assignment, given the run of five straightSection III and regional Class AA titles the Northstars won from 2017 to 2022. Adding to it was the way Kline’s tenure ended last fall – a suspension to quarterback Jaxon Razmovski and other events that led Kline to resign just before the sectional final, where C-NS lost to eventual state champion Christian Brothers Academy. But a months-long search ended last Monday night when the North Syracuse Board of Education approved the appointment of Jim Ryan, who moves to the Northstars after two seasons as head coach at Bishop Ludden. Though Ryan’s head-coaching experience is not as deep as it was for Kline, who won sectional titles at Henninger before moving to C-NS, he has spent two decades in the coaching ranks getting ready for this assignment. Ryan’s formative years were in the Rochester area, first at Victor High School, then at St. John Fisher College in Pittsford, from where he graduated in 2000. Moving to Central New York a year later, Ryan, in 2001, spent a season at CatoMeridian before a four-year stint as an assistant at Bishop Grimes, progressing from there to college assistant jobs at Morrisville State and Hobart over the course of a decade. Yet Ryan did not lose his ties to Section III, returning in 2016 and, for the next five years, running the athletic department at Manlius Pebble Hill, only to leave that job and go into sales and marketing. When Bishop Ludden needed a head coach after Matt Rogers’ retirement, Ryan went back to the sidelines in 2022. He led a combined Ludden/Syracuse Academy of Science side to a 6-2 record in his first year and a 4-5 mark last fall. And now it’s C-NS, where Ryan said that he will continue the program’s emphasis on power up front and speed all over the field on both offense and defense, regardless of whether he keeps the Northstars’ current group of assistant coaches or goes in another direction.

a powerhouse on your plate These foods can boost your diet

A

nutritious diet is a key component of a healthy lifestyle. That’s an important thing to remember for people looking to turn over a healthier leaf and accomplish their long-term wellness goals. Avoiding certain ingredients, like saturated fats and added sugars, and choosing foods known for their nutritional benefits is one way individuals can utilize diet to live healthier. Although such foods cannot entirely eliminate risk for certain diseases or make a person invincible, eating more of them certainly can benefit individuals’ overall health.

Kale

Kale long has had a place on healthy eating lists. Kale is a good source of vitamins A, C and K, and also contains alphalinolenic acid, which is an omega-3 fatty acid. According to Britannica, studies show kale can help combat heart

disease and cancer, and also boost eye health by reducing risk for cataracts and macular degeneration. Kale is not the only dark, leafy green vegetable that has earned superstar status. Swiss chard, spinach, collard greens, and turnip greens are equally beneficial.

Berries

There is strong antioxidant capacity associated with berries that helps reduce the risk of heart disease and other inflammatory conditions, according to Healthline. That’s why blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, and cranberries are so revered by nutritionists. They’re also great sources of fiber, vitamins and minerals.

Honey

This natural sweetener is a powerful ally to animals and insects. Honey is one of the most appreciated and valued natural products, according to the study “Honey and Health: A Review of Recent Clinical Research,” published in 2017. Since ancient times, honey has been used therapeutically due to its antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflamma-

tory, and antiproliferative effects.

Walnuts

Studies have found that those with higher nut consumption have improved cardiovascular risk factors and lower rates of cardiovascular disease. Nuts are an important part of the Mediterranean diet, which has been found to be heart healthy as well, according to Harvard Health. Walnuts are a particularly good choice for lowering LDL cholesterol, triglycerides and apoprotein B (a protein linked to cardiovascular disease).

Legumes

Legumes, also known as pulses, include beans, lentils, peas, peanuts, and alfalfa. Full of nutrients, like minerals, protein, fiber, and B vitamins, Healthline said legumes also improve feelings of fullness, which may help people eat less at each meal.

Teff

Not too many people have heard of teff, which is a very small grain that is a dietary staple in parts of eastern Africa. Teff is high in iron, magnesium, zinc, calcium and vitamin C. and contains ample protein and fiber. Teff also is gluten-free, so it can be ground and used in place of other flours in cooking, according to Britannica.

Kefir

Fermented foods and beverages have garnered increased attention recently because of their effect on helping maintain gut health. One such beverage you may have seen in your local grocery store is Kombucha, a fermented, lightly effervescent, sweetened black tea drink. Another is Kefir, which is loaded with vitamins, minerals and nutrients, says the Cleveland Clinic. It is a fermented milk that boasts higher concentrations of probiotics than some other fermented foods, like yogurt. Kefir has approximately 12 active probiotic strains. These nutrient-rich foods can make great additions to health-conscious individual’s diets, but always consult a doctor before making any changes to your diet.

Does the PGA tour…Have a fever?… Require stitches?…Or…Need an operation? There is one thing I believe we all can agree on…something is wrong and LIV Golf has turned the Game of Golf, as we knew it just 3 years ago, completely upside down! Two years ago, I believed the Tour had a “fever” and would completely recover in a short period of time. Last year, I was certain they needed “stitches” and I was going to volunteer my services to “stitch them up” so they could continue to dominate the world stage of golf. Today, I am begging them to get an “operation” as soon as possible so they have six - 9 months to recover and have the strength and motivation to resolve their differences with LIV Golf. You may recall, when Jay Monaghan announced last Summer he had met with LIV Golf and they would have an agreement by the end of 2023, I wrote a column predicting that would not happen and that negotiations would continue well into 2024. When John Rahm announced he was joining Liv Golf on December 7, 2023, most of the 70 million golfers, world wide, heard about it within 12 hours. The implications of his decision on the negotiations between the PGA Tour and Liv Golf gave Liv an advantage that can not be underestimated. What we didn’t know was that Jay Monaghan was also working behind the scenes to find financial partners to support the PGA Tour. He was successful. The Strategic Sports Group (SSG), which includes individuals with over 200 years of combined ownership of teams in the NFL, NBA, MLB, and EPL, formed and launched “PGA TOUR Enterprises with approximately a $3 billion dollar investment. That’s all you need to know for now. Unfortunately, if you want to know the details of the deal, you won’t find any…anyware! Oh, the printed words sound like a marriage made in heaven, but no one is “squealing” about the “real deal”. So, what happens now with the negotiations between Liv Golf and the PGA Tour? One thing is for sure, because Jay Monaghan pulled off the new partnership with SSG, the PGA Tour is now dealing from a position of “strength” (money power) when negotiating resumes. In the “short term” Jay is enjoying his glass of wine

and a fine Cuban cigar. Both sides can even claim victory for winning a few battles here and there over the last two years. However, I believe the true winner of the “WAR” will not be determined until the 2025 season because of the following information that both sides have received from the National Golf Foundation: * Rounds played are up 20% since 2019 (pandemic)…an all time high of 531 Million. * More than 90% of golfers expect to play as much or more in 2024. * “Green Grass” (golf course) participation hit 26.6 million in 2023 - the biggest single-year jump since the Tiger Slam in 2001. * Sixty percent of the growth since 2019 has been female participation. * Play by youth is up 40% while people of color play is up 27% over the same period. * Alternative forms of the game like Top Golf are up 130% which is increasing the number of total golfers to 45 million. * The greatest increase in number of rounds played during the week is Monday - Thursday. I wonder how your boss feels about that? GOLF IS BOOMING! Who wants to watch a WAR when things are great?…NOBODY! Who wants YOU to enjoy the upcoming season more than anyone?…The PGA TOUR AND LIV GOLF! One of my favorite tunes when I was a kid growing up in Rochester, NY was sung by Judy Garland. It was called “Get Happy”. The lyrics tell the tale of the drama taking place between the PGA Tour vs. Liv Golf and the first verse tells us how to cope with all the nonsence. Raising awareness

Feb. 4 marked World Cancer Day, a time to focus on raising awareness of the disease in all its many forms as well as shine a light on the progress that has been made in detecting, treating and possibly one day eliminating cancer. It also marked more than two decades of the movement according to worldcancerday.org. According to the website, this is a global uniting initiative led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). The mission statement of the website states that by raising worldwide awareness, improving education and catalyzing personal, collective and government action, progress is being made to reimagine a world where millions of preventable cancer deaths are saved and access to life-saving cancer treatment and care is equal for all - no matter who you are or where you live. It is the organization’s goal to reduce the number of premature deaths from cancer and noncommunicable diseases by one third by 2030. According to worldcancerday.org, 9.6 million people die each year from cancer. That’s more than HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined, according to the website and it is estimated that by 2030, cancer deaths to rise to 13 million. The website also shares that at least one third of common cancers are preventable, cancer is the second-leading cause of death worldwide, and 70% of cancer deaths occur in low-to-middle income countries and according to the website, up to 3.7 million lives could be saved each year by implementing resource appropriate strategies for prevention, early detection and treatment. The total annual economic cost of cancer is estimated at US$1.16 trillion. Cancers can be caused by a number of different factors and, as with many other illnesses, most cancers are the result of exposure to a number of different causal factors, according to worldcancerday.org. It is important to remember that, while some factors cannot be modified, around one third of cancer cases can be prevented by reducing behavioral and dietary risks. Some modifiable risk factors include alcohol consumption, being overweight/obese, diet and nutrition, lack of physical activity and tobacco consumption to name a few. Other factors can include exposure to radiation such as radon, x-rays, gamma rays and other forms of highenergy radiation. Prolonged and unprotected exposure to ultraviolet radiations from the sun, sunlamps and tanning beds can also lead to melanoma and skin malignancies. Work place hazards such as chemical dyes and asbestos and exposure to human papillomavirus (HPV). Signs to be aware of and proactive in speaking to a doctor about include, unusual lumps or swelling, coughing, breathlessness or difficulty swallowing, changes in bowel habit, unexpected bleeding, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, new mole or changes to a mole, complications with urinating, unusual breast changes, appetite loss, a sore or ulcer that won’t heal, persistent heartburn or indigestion, heavy night sweats. By being aware of changes we may be experiencing, early detection and treatment may be possible. To learn more visit worldcancerday. org.

What’s driving the bus? When I was first teaching I discovered that my students who were in high school at the time had a vague idea that I lived in school. Well, not so much in school but somehow suspended in a place between their lives and school when school was not in session. I think the same is true of adults when it comes to the professionals with whom they come in contact, when they know intellectually that those professionals lead much the same lives as they do. This particular professional is on the not-so-tall side with really curly red hair and a decided flair for research and investigation. Analytical would be a good descriptor. Tony Franks would probably substitute her favorite interrogator, “What is driving the bus?” This applies to most any issue for her. Take the preparation for guiding the members of the Bear Den scout-

Ann Ferro ing group that she and her spouse lead. Taking into account the age and life experiences of the children, Tony and her husband designed a series of activities leading to earning a badge in forensics. And what are they doing? She and her said spouse are using fingerprinting and chromatography to figure out which of the grownups in the household ate a missing cupcake, making the activity relevant to a humorous, potentially real-life experience of the children. Not that the adults are cupcakes thieves, but it’s more tangible to children than a bank robbery or grand theft auto. In her daily must-dos, Tony’s problem-solving refrain keeps things moving. Take food prep. It takes research and alert analysis to figure out what to serve for dinner to a family with

multiple food intolerances. What foods don’t include gluten, dairy, nuts, etc.? A daunting task, but her ability to analyze the problem and find a solution has led to a personal collection of delicious recipes. In the Franks household, there are additional recipes for family togetherness which include regular face time with grandma and a child’s practice conversations in Spanish, even though grandma speaks Italian. “Close enough,” Tony says. It’s the effort and the connection that are important. And it’s that importance of being present to others that led Tony to establish her own nonprofit, Made with Love, CNY, a project that supplies a box of essentials, think underwear, hygiene and art supplies to anyone in need. The project has included the Marcellus Food Pantry for seniors, for kids and adults in Auburn and the West Genesee

school district. Putting the boxes together is a family affair, as is their distribution. Everyone involved is rewarded. The recipients receive the boxes while the preparers and distributors become more keenly aware of their privileged lives while understanding the common humanity that they all share. Tony is my physical therapist. Vertigo, dizziness and disequilibrium are all words that have been used to describe that which has kept me mostly at home for over a year. Since the causes of these maladies can be legion, I began an exhausting journey to see if anyone could pin down a way out or the amelioration of my disability. Last fall Dr. Planer told me to see a physical therapist. PT might help, he suggested. It did and more. Tony’s acumen at analysis added the “more.” Her phrase, “What is Driving l Page 7

Rather, Tony, using the idea behind her favorite phrase explored possible causes that contributed to my muscle mania. I learned how to better use my shoulder muscles, my quads, and pectoralis muscles instead of the SCM group which, apparently I had asked to do more than they were designed to do. An integral part of the process is the dialog between the therapist and the patient, uncovering the symptoms, the relationship between symptoms and between life’s daily activities. What’s driving the bus? The answers were more appropriately answers to “What multiple things are driving this bus?” And so, between Tony’s expert manipulations and my learnings, we discussed how to make meringue cookies, how meaningful it is to share from privilege, the importance of family and to be open to learning new things, doing the research to find out who, what or how many are driving the bus to what destinations.

To the editor: Chairman of the Onondaga County Legislature Tim Burtis first item out of his leadership gate is a lawsuit vs. New York State with a “downpayment” of $100,000 of Onondaga County tax money to sue about election dates. Does he have support of his constituency? Does he have support of any other New York County? Chairman Burtis should use his own money or his political party’s money to fund his lawsuit-not Onondaga County residents. Laurance Pettersen Cicero

Village election dates

To the editor: There is a group of people that think the Village of Baldwinsville should change their village elections from March to November. Other residents, like me, don’t agree. Why? These are the points they make and my explanation as to why I don’t agree. Weather: they say November has better weather for residents to get out to vote: Not always, sometimes November has worse weather than March. We live in NY, NY weather is finicky. Location: they say it would be easier to know you vote at the same place as general elections: Why is it hard to know that village elections are always held at the village hall in the village? Cost: they say putting village elections with the large general elections will save a lot of money: I don’t think that approximately .50¢ a year per household is a lot of money. (We have done the math.) That .50¢ a year per household keeps village elections away from the Democrat/Republic chaos that can come out of the huge elections, ie: Trump vs. Biden. We don’t need that divi-

sion here. More people will vote: they say more people will vote and their voices will be heard: Some people might not even realize there is a village election until they see it on the ballot. By that time, they wouldn’t have had time to research each candidate to know the best ones to vote for. Would they then randomly vote for a name they had heard of, without knowing where that person stands on specific issues that the village board deals with? Village doesn’t advertise: The village puts up polling place signs, mentions the election dates during meetings and in legal notices. They also said they will do more to publicize the dates to get on the ballot and elections in the future. Homeowners usually have many candidate signs in their front yards. Snowbirds are gone in March: they say many people are out of the area in March: Absentee ballots will be mailed directly to any resident who will not be in the area on Election Day! Even to those who can’t get out to vote! I know, I get them. Parking: they say some people have had to wait for a parking spot at the village hall and might not have waited long enough to stay and vote: The village board already discussed how to improve that situation. And how is waiting for parking different than waiting in a long line to vote? The general elections, especially the potential one I mentioned above, produce a huge turnout and therefore, long lines. I’d rather wait for parking and then get right in and out. Please cast your votes for the current Board Members, they are doing a great job. If it’s not broke, there’s nothing to fix. Thank you for reading my concerns for our village elections! Linda Clarke Baldwinsville

driving this bus?” is central to my tale of woe and it’s research base gave form to her approach to my dizziness, vertigo, orthostatic hypotension (there are a lot of manifestations to my instability as I alluded to above.) We tried the Eply maneuver to quiet the annoying problem of inconsiderate particles in my ears that can confound where I think my body is in space, but that didn’t do the whole trick. I presented her with the conundrum of neck pain, which was the result of ill-disciplined (my term, I didn’t go to PT school) muscles in my neck. Sternocleidomastoids to be exact, the muscles that allow me to move my head to the side and back. Mine were so tight that I couldn’t manage those movements. Recalcitrant SCM muscles also, according to Dr. Google can lead to: Headaches, nausea, dizziness, vertigo, ear pain and more. Now Tony knew what to do to relieve the daunting symptoms and even more important how to teach me to intervene on my own. Slowly but surely, a mixture of techniques began to show positive results... but it wasn’t just addressing the muscles themselves.

Yet what will happen when Swift does something human, like we’ve all done, and strays from the ideal she has crafted? Though we’d hope there would be forgiveness and understanding, that’s not the track record, as those from Judy Garland to Britney Spears have experienced. There always reaches a point where constant love and adoration turns into something else. A handful of kids who screamed at the Beatles burned their records two scant years later when one of them had the nerve to comment on religion. As always, it’s best for us not to look for total wisdom or total certainty from any person, famous or otherwise. Leave room for the same kind of humanity you would ask for yourself if put in the same position. In the late 20 th or early 21 st century, we have shown a tendency to project all of our hopes and dreams in pop idols. The thing is, as the Beatles once discovered and Taylor Swift may yet discover, dreams don’t last, and the trick is to stay centered once you wake up.

and, of course, producing work still jaw-dropping more than half a century later. It’s impossible to say whether Swift, who does write great, catchy and memorable songs, will still have this complete power that she holds over large segments of our population decades from now. But to court the type of vast fame and popularity Swift has done carries all sorts of risks. At least there were four of the Beatles, and John Lennon still got murdered by an obsessed fan. There was only one Elvis, only one Michael Jackson – and look what happened to them, prisoners of their own legend, ultimately drowning in megalomania and ego. Simply put, at some point of ubiquity you lose the choice of getting away from the machine. Every single thing Swift does will face scrutiny, doubly so because it is a woman which has achieved what she has done and they always get judged to a harsher degree than men do. Swift has courted, and built, a massive audience of followers – Swifties, if you will – who hang on every lyric of every song and take her journey as their own. It’s a devotion that, in the right hands, is admirable.

C-NS girls power to sectional AA indoor track title by Phil Blackwell

In a winter full of emphatic and lopsided victories, the Cicero-North Syracuse girls indoor track and field team wanted to make sure last Tuesday’s Section III Class AA championships at SRC Arena followed that pattern. And it did, the Northstars accumulating 187 points, nearly three times that of runner-up Baldwinsville’s 70 points, while it also got second place in the boys Class AA sectional meet with 95 points behind B’ville (149 points), who won for the third year in a row. Anna Eells earned three indivdiual titles for the C-NS girls. Eels first beat Morgan Hayes, 8.44 seconds to 8.52, in a tight 55-meter hurdles where Aaliyah McDonald (8.72) was fifth. Then, in the high jump, Eells cleared 5 feet 5 inches to beat out the 5’4” from Rome Free Academy’s Imani Pugh as Jasmine Ayre was fifth. And in the triple jump, Eells led a top-three sweep, her 38’9 1/2” setting a new season mark as Morgan Hayes was second with 38’2 1/4” and Jasmine Ayre got third with 34’3 1/2”. Jaydin Mackey began her night by taking the 55-meter dash in 7.29 seconds to beat out Marissa Doty’s 7.50, with Stephanie Todd fifth in 7.60. In the 300-meter dash, Mackey’s 41.39 was exactly one second ahead of Doty’s second-place 42.39. Hayes had her turn at the top in the long jump, soaring a personal-best 17’11 3/4” to hold off Utica Proctor’s Rai-

C-NS also flourished in distance races, especially 3,000 meters, where eighthgrader Kennedy Jones prevailed in 10:48.63 to edge the 10:50.32 from Liverpool’s Kaitlyn Hotaling and Cameron Sisk was third in 10:57.72. Sophia Graham added a victory in the 600-meter run in 1:39.31, the only time under 1:40, with Gianna Melfi fifth and Callie Bednarski sixth. Katy Harbold got third place in the 1,500-meter run in 5:00.44, with Jones sixth. Nearly sweeping the relay, C-NS rolled in the 4x200 where Mackey, Todd, Doty and Grace Murray went 1:45.60 and broke the old sec-

tional record of 1:45.69 set in 2021. In the 4x400, Murray, Bednarski, Melfi and Camryn Jacob won in 4:07.91 to B’ville’s 4:09.56. In the 4x800 Harbold, Graham, Gabby Putman and Madeline Frisch were second in 9:54.61 to the 9:43.41 from Fayetteville-Manlius. Maria Sanfilippo had a second-place weight throw of 34’ 3/4”. For the C-NS boys, Camron Ingram went 6.57 seconds to win the 55 sprint as Davine Bennett was fourth in 6.68 and Derick Hicks sixth in 6.75. Later, in the 55 hurdles, Ingram tore to 7.42 and beat the second-place 7.93 from Kavon Brunson, no one else breaking the eight-second mark. Also going 1-2 in the shot put, the Northstars saw Joe Main throw it 49’9” to win as

Colt Hiltz used a season-best throw of 43’1 1/4” to grab second place. In the weight throw, Main was third with 46’9 3/4” and Ethan Matthews sixth with 44’9 1/2”. Ingram, Bennett, Brunson and Christian Kahrs were second (1:34.27) to West Genesee (1:32.35) in the 4x200. Rhett Andrews finished third at 3,200 meters in 10:11.54, with Joe Massett sixth and Nolan Zinsmeyer seventh. The Northstars were third in the 4x400 in 3:38.56, with Dante Melfi fourth in the 600 in 1:30.61. In the triple jump, the Northstars’ Jefferson Cazimir earned third place with 40’5 1/2” and Matt Freeman was fifth with 39’ 1/2”. Xander Provost cleared 5’8” for sixth place in the high jump. Liverpool had its best

individual showing from Ny’Quez Madison, who won the boys triple jump with a season-best 44’6 1/4” that beat the field by nearly four feet while also finishing fifth in the long jump (18’10 1/4”) and taking seventh in the 55 sprint. Kaden Bickford cleared 9 feet to gain third place in the pole vault. Davis Farrell added a fourth in the 3,200 in 10:29.62, with Joshua Vang fourth (2:40.94) and Ian Sherlock sixth (2:42.15) in the 1,000 as Liverpool took third in the 4x800 in 8:47.08, Vang getting fifth and Nate Aurello sixth in the 1,600. Evan Slater finished seventh in the long jump. On the girls side, Liverpool finished third behind C-NS and B’ville with 56 points, Layla Pearl Collins

clearing 9 feet in the pole vault for second behind B’ville’s Kelsey Dwyer, who won with 9’6” as C-NS had Natta Luangaphapy fifth and Annie Capone sixth. Taylor Page’s 2:58.69 in the 1,000 was a close second to the 2:58.30 from West Genesee’s Claire Griffin as C-NS had Gabby Putman in fifth place. Mikayla Greene finished third in the 300 in 42.82 seconds and Mia Wright was fifth in 43.19. Ariyah Racciatti rose to third in the weight throw with a toss of 32’6 3/4”. Audrey Jenkins, clearing 4’10”, was fourth in the high jump behind Eells. Taima Tearney getting sixth place with 4’6”. Katie Martin took fifth in the 3,000, with Liverpool third in the 4x800 in 9:55.31.

C-NS boys bowlers win first sectional title since 1995 by Phil Blackwell

A long time had passed since the Cicero-North Syracuse boys bowling team lay claim to a Section III championship - nearly 30 years. But that long drought ended Feb. 3 at Strike-N-Spare Lanes, where on its home lanes the Northstars outlasted a strong field of challengers to earn the sectional Division I team title, its first since 1995. And it earned a berth for C-NS in the March 10 New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships, also taking place at Strike-N-Spare. The sectional tournament involves a six-game format - three in the morning, three in the afternoon, in conditions typically tougher than what bowlers face during the regular season. C-NS wasted little time jumping into contention, shooting 1,050 in the opening game, second only to New Hartford’s 1,108. Then it improved to 1,107 and took the lead through two games. As it turned out, the Northstars’ struggles in the third game might have proved a turning point. Only shooting 890, C-NS went into the break at 3,047, back in third place,

while Central Square surged into the lead at 3,070 and New Hartford was at 3,049. In the pivotal fourth game, C-NS went in front for good, its 1,068 the best score of that round led by Nehemiah Bachmann’s 268. Even more important, though, was the 1,033 fifth game led by a 257 from Garrett Arnold, since Central Square fell out of contention with 876. Going to the sixth and final game, the Northstars led second-place Auburn by 166 pins. A 923 kept the Maroons from getting closer, which meant that, with a 234 from Jason Krausnick and a team total of 960, C-NS put the title away. Finishing at 6,108, with New Hartford ultimately taking second place at 5,946. Central Square (5,915) edged Auburn (5,906) for third. On an individual basis, C-NS’s Jacob Calabria nearly finished on top. He started with a 257, had a second-game 239 and then, with 223 and 238 games in the afternoon, ultimately finished at 1,308, just five pins behind Beaver River’s Ethan Crouse at 1,313. Bachmann improved throughout the morning until his 268 tied him for second among all individual

The Cicero-North Syracuse boys bowling team won the Section III Division I and Class A championship on Feb. 4 at Strike-N-Spare Lanes, the program’st first sectional title since 1995. The Northstars’ total pinfall of 6,108 was 162 pins better than Division I runner-up New Hartford and 193 ahead of Class A runner-up Central Square. games behind the 277 from Whitesboro’s Kaidan Fischer and keyed CNS’s surge to the front. He also had games of 234 and 222 in his 1,264 series, good for ninth place. Arnold was four pins behind in 10th place, his 1,260 series including that 257 and a 237 in the fourth game. Tom O’Connell put together a

six-game total of 1,159 that opened with games of 212 and 215. Krausnick had 774 over four games, while Sam Hoffmann had games of 164 and 179. Liverpool finished ninth in Division I and eighth in Class A with a team score of 5,414, the Warriors not having any of its bowlers compete in

all six games. Tanner Gist had a five-game total of 907 with games of 205 and 223. Austin Burch shot a high-game 191 in his 879 for five games as Xavier Theetge, in just four games, had 832, concluding with 207 and 237. Grady Foster opened with 216 and got 736 for four games.

Liverpool, C-NS boys basketball teams maintain winning form by Phil Blackwell

Once again the Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool boys basketball teams found themselves packed together in the state Class AAA rankings – the Northstars at no. 16, the Warriors at no. 17. Just as tight was their battle for the possible top seed in the Section III playoffs, which nearly took another turn last Tuesday night before Liverpool, playing at Baldwinsville, was able to fight past the Bees 56-50. Even against a defense as well-run as B’ville, the Warriors were able to shoot well in the first half, converting 13 of 22 attempts from the field. Sparked by 10 first-half points from reserve Alex Trombley, Liverpool overcame an early 15-9 deficit and led much of the second quarter, only to have B’ville rally and tie it, 30-30, going to the break. What turned it was Kaelem Haskins hitting three 3-pointers in the span of a minute

did not have to depend as much on Andrew Benedict and Nate Francis, though Benedict had 21 points and Francis got 13 points. Landon Rumble made an impression, hitting five 3-pointers to account for most of his career-best 17 points, while Michael Pfautz finished with 12 points. Makhi Amoako (19 points) and Jack Tumber (18 points) led Auburn. A 73-36 rout of Henninger followed on Friday night, notable in that Benedict, with his 16 points, moved into second place on the C-NS career scoring list with 1,206, trailing only the 1,926 Michael Brown achieved more than 30 years ago. Yet it was Francis, with 20 points, setting the scoring pace for the Northstars. Terrance Coppock earned 11 points, with Pfautz adding six points. Liverpool had a far tougher test against state Class A no. 16-ranked Jamesville-DeWitt – or at it least it seemed that way before the Warriors took the court and, excelling in nearly ev-

early in the third quarter that, along with a fourth 3-pointer later in the period, helped the Warriors go in front for good. The Bees weren’t done, though. When eighth-grader Matt Pope hit a 3-pointer and Tyler Nilsen converted on a layup with 4:36 left, the Bees were within two, 48-46, but it never scored another field goal until the game’s final seconds. Liverpool’s defense, combined with timely scoring plays, put the game away. Freddie Fowler finished with 17 points, Haskins adding 15 points as M.J. Young paced B’ville with 17 points. This happened as C-NS was hosting Auburn, displaying a newfound sense of offensive balance in an 84-59 victory over the Maroons. Only up 17-13 through one period, the Northstars erupted in the second, piling up 35 points as it could not miss anything and eventually built a 52-24 halftime advantage. Though it cooled off from there, C-NS breezed through the second half, glad that it

ery phase of the game, handled the Red Rams 81-64. Things were close in the early going only due to the hot shooting of J-D’s Jackson Saroney, who would lead all scorers with 26 points, but as he cooled off, Liverpool took over. In a run that spanned the second and third quarters, the Warriors outscored the Rams 19-4, helped by, among other things, 22 bench points in the first half – 10 by Trombley, nine off a trio of 3-pointers by Sean Frawley. Trombley would go on to a career-best 20 points, which Fowler would match with a late scoring surge. Hoskins and Jeff Manuel both gained 10 points as its offense, inconsistent at times this season, shot well and flourished against a high-caliber opponent. Liverpool’s regular-season finale against Syracuse Academy of Science on Thursday night, which follows C-NS taking on J-D Tuesday night, might determine which of these two ends up with that sectional top seed.
