What will replace ‘Warrior’ as LCSD mascot? Liverpool schools launch suggestion survey The Liverpool Central School District has taken the next step in the process to change its Warrior mascot by launching a Mascot Suggestion Survey. Members of the Liverpool community (current students, staff and families, as well as alumnus, retirees and community members) can submit their suggestions to replace the Warrior nickname and state why they feel the suggested nickname best fits with the current logo. Once those are collected, a mascot committee will review submissions and narrow it down to a group of finalists to be pre-

sented to the community for an official vote. To participate in the survey, visit surveymonkey.com/r/WC8V9SD. The survey closes on Friday, Feb. 9. In April 2023, the New York State Board of Regents voted unanimously to approve new rules banning the use of Native American culture in schools. This regulation requires school districts which currently use indigenous team names, logos, and mascots to eliminate the use of all indigenous names, logos, or mascots by the end of the 20242025 school year. While the district adopted a Roman Warrior logo 20 years ago, the NYS Education Department determined that the term Warrior is still connected to the Native American culture, and must be replaced.

At a community meeting in December, the district stated it would prefer to keep the current Roman Warrior logo and change the nickname. Keeping the current logo would cause less disruption in terms of branding work that has already taken place in the district. This includes signage and displays within district buildings, as well as placement on uniforms, equipment and apparel. At a community meeting in December, the district stated it would prefer to keep the current Roman Warrior logo and change the nickname. liverpool.k12.ny.us

Wear Red Day brings awareness of women’s No. 1 health threat

In Syracuse, representatives from the American Heart Association joined with volunteers and community leaders to celebrate National Wear Red Day at St. Joseph’s Health.

T

he American Heart Association is rallying women in Central New York to take charge of their health on Friday, Feb. 2, as a part of the Association’s Go Red for Women National Wear Red Day. Today’s event helps launch February as American Heart Month. Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1

killer of women. In fact, nearly 45% of women over age 20 are living with some form of cardiovascular disease. On National Wear Red Day, Feb. 2, the American Heart Association’s premier women’s initiative, Go Red for Women, urges everyone to join us in championing better health and well-being for all women. In Syracuse, representatives from the American Heart Association joined with volunteers and community leaders to celebrate National Wear Red Day at St. Joseph’s Health. Speakers included Mer-

edith Price, Syracuse Heart Challenge chairwoman and senior vice president of Acute Operations at St. Joseph’s Health; Amy Grover, American Heart Association board member; Dana Zaborowski, nurse practitioner with SJH cardiology and Allison Graff, heart disease survivor. American Heart Association and St. Joseph’s Health representatives also presented Heartsaver Hero Awards to Heather Shimer-Breno and Angela Breno. The pair saved a woman in cardiac arrest at an airport in Baltimore while on their way to a vacation. At the heart of it, National Wear Red Day is about raising awareness and spreading education to save more women’s lives. There are many ways to save a life, both big and small.

Whether it’s learning hands-only CPR so more people get the life-saving help they need in an emergency, joining Research Goes Red to ensure women are represented in cardiovascular research, inviting a friend to work out, finally making it to that doctor’s appointment you’ve been postponing, or simply taking a quiet moment alone to de-stress and practice self-care; heart health is personal, and always worth the investment. “National Wear Red Day is about more than kicking off American Heart Month, it’s about women coming together and demanding more when it comes to the health and well-being of our communities,” said Amy Grover, American Heart Association board Go Red l Page 10

Movie supersedes the mundane Protect your our voice

information

It is increasingly common many of us do our banking and pay our bills online. In some instances out of convenience and in some cases because that is the way many businesses are heading, offering only online options to make payments. And this time of year, many will be doing their taxes online as well. While many of us can appreciate the ease and convenience of using these options, likely we all harbor a few concerns about how safe our information is and if it is vulnerable to hackers. The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, the Office of Information Technology Services, Department of Financial Services, the Department of State’s Division of Consumer Protection, and the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services encouraged New Yorkers to take a proactive approach to ensure their private information is secure online and at home. To keep personal information and data safe, the New York State agencies are partnering to share these tips: Be wary of unsolicited emails and telephone calls asking for personal information. Never share personal information, such as your Social Security number, in response to an unsolicited email or telephone call. If the email or call claims to be from a company with which you do business, call it first to confirm the contact is legitimate. Secure your mobile devices. Apply software updates that patch known vulnerabilities as soon as they become available. Use security features built into your device such as a passcode and use programs that encrypt data and remotely wipe contents if the device is lost or stolen. Be careful with wi-fi hotspots. Public wireless hotspots are not secure, which means that anyone could potentially see what you are doing on your mobile device while you are connected. Limit what you do on public wi-fi and avoid logging into sensitive accounts. Know your apps. Thoroughly review the details and specifications of an app before you download it. Review and understand the privacy policy of each mobile app. Be aware that the app may request access to your location and personal information. Be cautious about the information you share on social media. Avoid posting your birthdate, telephone number, home address, or images that identify your job or hobbies. This information may often reveal answers to security questions used to reset passwords, making you a possible target of scammers looking to access your accounts and secured information. Use strong passwords. Create different passwords for all your accounts. Use 10 to 12 characters in a combination of letters (upper and lower case), numbers and symbols. Individuals should regularly change their passwords as well. Change your security questions. Don’t use the same security questions on multiple accounts. Be careful to select security questions for which only you know the answer. Make sure the answers cannot be guessed or found by searching social media or the internet. Turn on two-step verification to access accounts. To enhance the security of your account, require your password and an extra security code to verify your identity whenever you sign-in to your accounts, where available. Beware of phishing. Do not click on links, download files or open attachments in emails from unknown senders. It is best to open attachments only when you are expecting them and know what they contain, even if you know the sender. Access more information on phishing from the Office of Information Technology Services YouTube page.

Everyone in both locker rooms, whether they wear Kansas City red or San Francisco red and gold, understands all the things that have to go well, all the great performances needed in all phases of the game, to reach this summit, one side trying to further its own dynasty, the other seeking payback for what happened four years ago in South Florida. Ted weighs almost eighty pounds, but he’s as sweet and gentle as a little puppy. He loves toys, treats, attention, and affection. Ted’s a benign canine with a big head and a bigger heart! Meet Ted for yourself and see what a special guy he is! For more information about adoption, call 315-454-4479, email frontdesk1@ cnyspca.org, or visit cnyspca.org.

member. “This is a great example of women across the country, not just here in Syracuse, banding together to unite against the No. 1 killer of women. This is always important but especially true in 2024 as the American Heart Association celebrates its 100th birthday.” According to the American Heart Association’s 2024 Heart Disease & Stroke Statistical Update, cardiovascular disease remains the greatest health threat for women. This is why the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement, nationally sponsored by CVS

Health, is asking women to make bold moves today for healthier tomorrows. Throughout Central New York and across the nation, people will be wearing red on Wear Red Day. Buildings illuminating red to raise awareness include: Barclay Damon Tower; The Bonadio Group; Crouse Hospital Clocktower; Loretto; Nascentia; NYS Fairgrounds – main gate and Expo Center; St. Joseph’s Health Hospital surgical tower; Syracuse City Hall; Syracuse University’s JMA Wireless Dome and Hall of Languages; and Upstate Medical University Weiskotten Hall. It was a wonderful two weeks…

Those of you who read my articles and listen to my radio show know that I was in Florida from January 11-28 to attend the 71st PGA Merchandise Show on January 23-26 in Orlando, Florida. I decided to leave on the 11th to go to Port St. Lucie, Florida first, for two reasons. The first reason was to go to the PGA Golf Club to practice and prepare myself to play in the Golf Writers of America Championship at the Mission Inn Resort on January 21-22 as well as to hopefully see a few of the CNY PGA Golf Professionals who spend their Winters in Port St. Lucie. The PGA Golf Club is a magnificent golf complex that has three “tournament ready” golf courses. One of the courses was designed by Pete Dye, who also designed Sawgrass in Ponte Verda Beach, Florida. The other two were designed by Tom Fazio, who also designed Atunyote at Turning Stone. The PGA Golf Club has a recently renovated 15 acre Practice Facility with three putting greens, two practice bunkers and a six hole PGA Short Course that offers holes from 35-60yards in length. It is complementary to golf guests. I practiced and played two 9 hole rounds of golf and was very pleased with my performance considering the 2 month layoff since November of 2023. On Saturday morning the 13th, I broadcast my radio show from the famous Taplow Pub in the Clubhouse. Dir. of Golf, Holly Taylor, co-hosted the show with me. The second reason I wanted to go to Port St. Lucie on the 17th was to meet Tony Calascibetta, owner of Cam’s Pizerria’s in Camilus, Oswego, Watertown, and now, his newest location in Port St. Lucie, Florida. It is located in a very nice neighborhood at one end of a popular “Strip Center Mall”, about 14 minutes from the PGA Golf Club. The best feature is a 350-400 sq.ft. brick laid patio for year around dining and parties. The Grand Opening is scheduled for the week of February 11th. If you happen to be down there at that time, stop over to visit. You never know who might be there. They have already had two familiar faces from Camilus and Oswego stop in. On the morning of the 12th, Thursday, I drove to Howey in the Hills, Florida to practice and play a few more holes before the Golf Writers of America Championship on Sunday and Monday at the Mission Inn Resort. The Mission Inn is simply an exclusive resort that has catered to many of the Top 500 Companies in America. In fact, when I registered, I noticed that the PGA Magazine was honoring the Top PGA of America “Merchandizers of the Year” recipients for two days. The resort has two challenging golf courses that have hosted over 20 years of high school, college, state and

professional championships. The courses are; Las Colinas and the El Campeo’n masterpiece that has been the #1 ranked course in Florida since 2012 by Golf Channel’s GolfAdvisor. Let’s talk tournament! Based on my performance, both at the PGA range and on the courses I played, I am expecting to shoot scores from the mid to high 70’s to low 80’s…which is about my range when playing from the Senior tees. Well, surprise… surprise! I shot the worst two rounds of golf on consecutive days in a tournament that I can ever remember. No joke…It was a disaster. However, it was another lesson learned in humility. After the tournament on Monday, I headed to Orlando to attend Demo Day, which is always the official first day of the PGA Merchandise Show. As usual, the club manufactures lined the one/half mile driving range at Orange County National Golf Center and Lounge. I had the opportunity to hit irons, hybrids, drivers and wedges from Mizuno, Cobra, Callaway, Ping and Titleist. It’s like being a kid in a candy store for 4 hours. On Wednesday the show begins with over 30,000 attendees in the golf industry looking at products displayed by over 1,000 venders from 89 countries around the world. If you walked down every isle in the Orlando Convention Center, you would have to walk 10 miles on your bruised and sore feet. I again conducted interviews at the PGA Media Satellite Stage, on the convention floor, for the 6th consecutive year….it’s inception. My favorite conversation every year, for the past 20 years, has been with Titleist’s Bob Vokey. He’s 85 years old and still going strong. He draws the largest crowds of all the manufactures booths. I left the show on Friday morning and headed back to the Altamonte Springs area that is close to the airport. I am looking for a golf course that will allow me to broadcast my show on Saturday morning. By accident, I find the Winter Park Golf Club. Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Byron Nelson and Babe Didrikson Zaharias all played in exhibitions there. Google it…please. I have been pinching myself every day since I returned to CNY.

C-NS wrestlers win sectional championship by Phil Blackwell

Again proving itself to be the top program among the largest schools in the area, the Cicero-North Syracuse wrestling team brought home the banner from last Saturday’s Section III Class AA championships at JamesvilleDeWitt. All told, the Northstars earned 200.5 points, just enough to fend off the challenge of host J-D/CBA, who was second with 179.5 points. Liverpool, with 109 points, was seventh in the nine-team field.

Four different C-NS wrestlers earned titles, starting at 116 pounds, where Anthony Ciciarelli, in his title bout against New Hartford’s Caden Beecher, kept Beecher from getting a point in six minutes on the mat, finishing with a 6-0 decision. Sean Aldrich did not go the full distance in his 138-pound final as, facing Liverpool’s Samir Almiri, he got a pin of Almiri late in the second period. It was even more lopsided for Kennedy Thomas at 145 pounds, for in his title bout Thomas only needed 67 seconds to finish off

J-D/CBA’s Mason Porter. Finally, there was Kamdin Bembry, who worked his way to victory at 215 pounds with an impressive championship-round effort against J-D/CBA’s Bryce Dadey, winning it by a 12-5 margin. Two other Northstars nearly went to the top. At 101 pounds, Kasey Kalfass got to the final, only to face Baldwinsville’s Brennan Kline and, in a tense battle to the final seconds, drop a 7-6 decision. It was identical at 124 pounds, where Javone Dawkins made his way to the finals and lost by

a single point, in this case managing a single escape against West Genesee’s Austin Fesinger and nothing more in a 2-1 defeat. Liverpool had one other finalist besides Almiri – Dante Mallozzi, who got to the title bout at 170 pounds, only to run into New Hartford’s Patrick Barres, who won with a thirdperiod fall. Top finishers here all could meet each other again this Saturday at SRC Arena during the sectional Division I championships that determine the automatic berths for the Feb. 23-24 state championships in Albany.

C-NS, Fusion ice hockey play to tense 3-3 tie by Phil Blackwell

Both the Cicero-North Syracuse and CNY Fusion ice hockey teams have made it to the last week of the regular season, resolute in thinking that they could both make some noise in the Section III Division I playoffs. And what happened when those two sides went head-to-head last Thursday night at Fulton Ice Arena did little to discourage those thoughts, the hosts rallying to forge a 3-3 tie with the Northstars. C-NS jumped out to a 2-1 advantage through one period. They then traded goals in the second before Fusion pulled even in the third, seeing Andrew Gabor again put one past Leyton Sullivan like he had done in the first two periods to complete his hat trtick. Trevor Smith shut out the Northstars down

the stretch on his way to 40 saves, bailed out by Gabor as five others – Dylan Ling, Evan Haskins, Gavin Rodman, Alex Kirkby and Reilly Biziga – had one assist apiece. Leyton Sullivan, for his part, had 30 saves, helped in front of him by Andrew Davis scoring twice and Austin Benkoski getting the other goal, assists going to Nate Bustin, Cole Prevost and Chase Mearon. A game last Tuesday night pitted the Northstars against Fayetteville-Manlius, who also use the Twin Rinks as a home ice, but it was C-NS, led by Hayden Scott, emerging on top as it rallied for a 3-2 overtime victory over the Hornets. F-M led most of the way, establishing a 2-1 margin by the end of the second period as Nico Capriotti and Noah Chen put in the goals, with assists going to Walker Thomson and Tyler

Mayne. C-NS battled back, though, tying it in the third and winning it in the OT period. Scott was responsible for most of it as he scored twice and assisted on the other goal, by Tanner Long, while Davis and Jase Knopp joined Scott and Long in the assist column. Just as he would against Fusion, Sullivan stopped everything he faced in the game’s late stages, ultimately accumulating 35 saves. CNY Fusion began the week coming off a 7-3 defeat to Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake on Jan. 27 where Rodman, Gabor, got goals and assists went to Kirkby, Dan Keegan and Tyler Bertrand. Now it was Fusion against Cazenovia two nights later at Morrisville State IcePlex, and it turned into an exciting contest where, with early defense and a late-game comeback, the visitors managed a 3-3 tie with the Lakers.

Fusion had just one shot in the opening period to Cazenovia’s 12, but Smith stopped all of them, and after Jack Donlin scored 25 seconds into the second period, Cal Brown countered on the very next shift. Early in the third, Rhiley Montoya put Cazenovia back in front. Worse yet, on a Fusion power play Shamus Newcomb earned a breakaway for Cazenovia and put it past Smith to make it 3-1 with 5:22 left. However, a five-minute major penalty by the Lakers put Fusion into a man advantage. With 2:16 to play, a goal by Gabor cut it to 3-2, then, six-on-four after Smith was pulled, Rodman scored with 51 seconds left in regulation. Neither side would convert in overtime as Bertrand, Haskins and John LaPlante also earned assists and Smith finished the night with 32 saves, more than twice the 14 from Cazenovia counterpart Tucker Ives.

Liverpool, C-NS girls roll to impressive victories by Phil Blackwell

One of the inherent strengths of the Liverpool girls basketball team is its ability to, at any time in a game, string together a long and demoralizing scoring run. Often it happens in the first half as a tonesetter. However, when the state Class AAA no. 7-ranked Warriors faced Fulton last Tuesday night, it was in the middle stages that Liverpool played best to handle the Red Dragons 65-28. Hot early shooting created a 20-10 edge going to the second quarter, where any thoughts that Fulton might make the game interesting vanished when it managed just two points in that frame.

Then Liverpool made a 27-9 push through the third quarter as A’briyah Cunningham, with 15 points, led a deep and versatile attack. Gianna Washington and Giselle Cruz each had nine points, with Gracie Sleeth getting eight points as Kaylyn Sweeney and Angie Kohler got seven points apiece. Cicero-North Syracuse, flush with momentum after an impressive Jan. 26 win over state-ranked Baldwinsville, kept it going last Tuesday when it defeated Jamesville-DeWitt 53-26. Neither team started well, but the Northstars gradually picked up its production as the game went on, culminating in a second half where it outscored the Red Rams 34-12. Amanda Timmons came off the bench

and led C-NS with 12 points. Olivia Cook got 10 points, with Kat McRobbie-Taru earning nine points and Leah Benedict getting seven points. In Friday’s action, C-NS handled Nottingham 62-32, only allowing a single free throw in the first quarter and then outscoring the Bulldogs 23-11 in the second period to pull further away. Achieving near-perfect scoring balance, it was Meadow Werts leading the way with 11 points, but Benedict and Cook close behind with 10 points apiece. Howell had eight points, with Timmons getting seven points and McRobbie-Taru six points. Continuing to face strong opposition, the Northstars would host Buffalo’s Cardinal

O’Hara, no. 4 in the state AAA rankings, on Saturday afternoon and, while putting up a good challenge, still lost 67-55 to the Hawks. Mostly, the first half is where O’Hara won it, limiting C-NS all the way until it trailed 3116 at the break and forced the Northstars to chase the Hawks the rest of the way. Benedict stood out for C-NS, pouring in 21 points. McRobbie-Taru managed 12 points, while Howell had nine points. Meadow Werts and Grace Villnave had five points apiece. A trip to Auburn and a visit from Henninger awaits the Northstars this week as Liverpool would make a trip Monday to 14-4 Baldwinsville, a team it routed 57-34 early in January, before games at Henninger and J-D later in the week.

Liverpool boys win twice; C-NS stops Nottingham by Phil Blackwell

Though it won the only time they went head-to-head in overtime back on Dec. 15, the Liverpool boys basketball team still found itself looking up at Cicero-North Syracuse through much of this winter. However, the Northstars’ Jan. 23 defeat at Rome Free Academy combined with a tough Warriors win at Victor meant that the two sides now stood at no. 16 and 17, respectively, in last week’s state Class AAA poll, and RFA was ahead of them at no. 15. Liverpool took this into last Tuesday’s game at Fulton, one of the stronger Class AA sides, and again leaning on its defense, the Warriors built a healthy margin, then held on late to beat the Red Dragons 59-55.

A low-scoring first half saw Liverpool employ a strategy that it maintained throughout the night, in that it didn’t worry much about standout Gavin Doty but tried to contain all of Doty’s teammates. And it worked, for though Doty would finish with 32 points, Fulton found itself trailing 46-35 through three quarters before making a furious comeback in the final period. Much of Liverpool’s offense came from Freddie Fowler, who had 20 points, and Kaelem Haskins, who earned 17 points. Alex Trombley had seven points as Jeff Manuel, so strong against Victor, got nine rebounds and seven blocks to go with six points. Back home Thursday night to face Corcoran, Liverpool broke out on the offensive end early, and then really picked up the pace in the

third quarter on the way to crushing the Cougars 81-46. Corcoran aimed to push the tempo, but the Warriors again played shutdown defense early and was up 15-6 through one period. Then they traded baskets until that third period where Liverpool netted 27 points to Corcoran’s seven. Haskins went to the forefront, his 22 points just one of his season-best of 23 from early December against Nottingham. Fowler got 14 points and Trombley earned 13 points, with Manuel adding nine points and Daniel Dunn picking up six points. It was here that C-NS returned to action, hostting Nottingham Friday night at the Junior High School and maintaining control most of the way while getting a 62-54 win over

the Bulldogs. Steady on both ends, the Northstars were up 30-21 by halftime, but Denarius McCurty, who finished with 27 points, led a third-quarter charge that moved Nottingham within four, 44-40, with one period left. C-NS maintained its poise, though, and Andrew Benedict nearly equaled McCurty as he gained 25 points. Terrance Coppock finished with 10 points as Nate Francis got nine points, Michael Gallo eight points and Rosco Polos six points. Moving to 15-2 with that victory, the Northstars would host Auburn Tuesday and goes to Henninger Friday as Liverpool, with its 15-2 mark, would go Tuesday to Baldwinsville before welcoming Class A front-runner Jamesville-DeWitt on Friday at 6:30.

Girls indoor Northstars win big at SCAC metro meet by Phil Blackwell

Anything less than full and complete domination was not in the plans of the Cicero-North Syracuse girls indoor track and field team going into last Thursday’s Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division meet at SRC Arena. And the Northstars saw the plan though, piling up 170 points as Liverpool, with 75 points, was just behind Baldwinsville (77) for the runner-up spot, with C-NS adding a second-place finish in the boys event with 89 points behind B’ville’s 128. Anna Eells led the C-NS girls with three event victories. Eells went 8.54 seconds in the 55 hurdles leading a topthree sweep with Morgan Hayes (8.68) and Aaliyah McDonald (8.69). Over in the triple jump, Eells went

36 feet 3 inches to beat Hayes’ secondplace 34’9 1/2”, and in the high jump Eells cleared 5’4” to easily prevail, no one else topping 5 feet as Liverpool’s Taima Tearney (4’10”) was third. Jaydin Mackey swept the sprints. In 7.35 seconds, Mackey went 1-2 with Stephanie Todd (7.53) in the 55-meter dash, while in the 300-meter dash Mackey was victorious in 41.45 seconds, again chased by two teammates as Marissa Doty was second in 43.03 and Grace Murray third in 43.43. Doty, Murray, Camryn Jacob and Callie Bednarski prevailed in the 4x400 relay in 4:12.49, with Liverpool fourth, and Mackey returned in the 4x200 to help McDonald, Todd and Murray win in 1:45.26 to Liverpool’s 1:47.22 from Mia Wright, Mikayla Greene, Nahla Battle-Crenshaw and Maddie Deven-

dorf. Kennedy Jones finished second in the 3,000-meter run in 10:44.69, with Sophia Graham third in the 600-meter run in 1:40.66 as Gianna Melfi finished sixth in 1:44.74. Maria Sanfilippo climbed to second place in the weight throw with a top heave of 33’ 1/2”. Katy Harbold took third in the 1,500meter run in 4:52.28 and helped the Northstars finish second in the 4x800 relay in 10:06.07 to Liverpool’s thirdplace 10:08.92. Liverpool’s Taylor Page won the 1,000-meter run in 2:59.73 to beat out C-NS’s Gabby Putman (3:03.74) in second place. Layla Pearl Collins cleared 8’6” in the pole vault to prevail over CNS’s Annie Capone (8 feet) and Natta Luangaphay (7’6”) as Collins also was sixth in the 55 hurdles.

Kaitlyn Hotaling finished third in the 3,000 in 10:53.80 as Katie Martin was fifth, with Devendorf fourth in the 300. Olivia Kuol was fifth and Eseroghene Uloho seventh in the shot put. As on the girls side, the C-NS boys were victorious in the 55 sprint, Camron Ingram posting 6.49 seconds to edge Corcoran’s Tawakal Omar (6.54) as Davine Bennett finished sixth in 6.67. Ingram then prevailed in the 55 hurdles, again just head of Omar, 7.34 seconds to 7.36, with Kavon Brunson third in 8.09 and Jaiden Tagliarino fifth in 8.44. Ingram and the Northstars were a close second (1:32.47) to West Genesee (1:32.36) in the 4x200. Joe Main joined in by throwing the shot put 47’11” to win that event, with Colt Hiltz (41’10”) in fourth place. Meet l Page 12
