Winter Fest 2024 set for Feb. 8-11 Cazenovia to present enhanced weekend-long celebration of winter

The Cazenovia community is presenting an enhanced version of its traditional Winter Fest celebration this year from Feb. 8-11. By kate hill Staff writer Caz Life, an events committee within the Greater Cazenovia Area Chamber of Commerce (GCACC), is partnering with local businesses and organizations to present a four-day celebration of all things winter. This year’s enhanced Caz Winter Fest will be held Feb. 8-11 at various locations throughout the community. The packed schedule includes traditional Winter Fest events, such as Cazenovia High School’s talent show and snow sculpture competition, plus a variety of new offerings, such as community curling at Meier’s Creek Brewing Co., a guided night hike/snowshoe from the brewery to Lorenzo, ice sculptures, and a “Cocoa Crawl” and pop-ups at the downtown shops. Caz Life was established as the “business-to-consumer” events and marketing arm of the GCACC in the spring of 2023 to help foster local business development, promote tourism, and implement effective marketing strategies to enhance the vibrancy and economic growth of the village.

“For many of us who have lived in Cazenovia over the years, [Winter Fest] is a tradition that we have loved seeing grow and evolve,” said Caz Life member Caitlin Gambee on Jan. 23. “We had a community meeting today, and it was incredible to go around the group and have people talk about their favorite memories from years past. They highlighted events that we see annually but also events that have long been retired from Winter Fest. It was clear that Winter Fest has been a source of joy in the community for generations of Cazenovians.” The 2024 Caz Winter Fest is made possible by a $40,000 grant awarded to the CazArts creative alliance through the office of Assemblyman Al Stirpe. A portion of the funding, which is intended to be used to enhance economic activity in Cazenovia through marketing and events, is being used to support this year’s expanded and enhanced Winter Fest events. “In the middle of winter, it’s important to celebrate and bring Cazenovia folks together,” said CazArts President Geoffrey Navias. “It’s [also] great and fun to bring people to Cazenovia. Winter Fest in Cazenovia has been a tradition

for the last 50 years, and this year, there has been terrific planning and great energy to bring vitality and new activities to the festival. CazArts is delighted [to be] working with so many others to add to the festivities.” The Stirpe grant application was facilitated by the Cazenovia Area Community Development Association (CACDA). “The schedule has always included a lot of community-focused events, like

ice skating and sledding,” said CACDA Executive Director Lauren Lines, who also serves on the CazArts board. “Our goal is to maintain that while also creating events that will bring people from around the region to enjoy winter in Cazenovia.” Also integral to this year’s event is Michael John Heagerty, a well-known community facilitator in Syracuse whose work on Winter Fest is being Winter Fest l Page 9

The village of Cazenovia extends an open invitation to a public meeting at which Saratoga Associates consultants will present the first drafts of conceptual drawings for a master plan for Lakeland Park. Saratoga led the group in focused brainstorming and generated a large amount of input and feedback on various visions for both preserving and enhancing the park, as well as Carpenter’s Barn. Discussion topics included a potential pathway system to increase walkability within the park, enhancements to the swim and diving areas including addressing the failing walls, a potential visitor dock, a tree assessment and planting plan, evaluating the traffic flow and parking pattern, reviewing the siting and condition of the bandstand to maximize the use of the park and barn for public events, just to name a few.

People who believe in buying local but have a metropolitan taste in their bagels will soon have a place to go to satisfy both these needs. A new bagel shop is opening in Cazenovia this weekend that will offer authentic New York City bagels in a business in which everything else offered comes from Cazenovia and the immediate Cazenovia area. Cazenovia Bagel Co., owned by Kelly and Kevin Mc Greevy, of Cazenovia, will offer bagels and bialys with various cream cheese flavors, breakfast and lunch sandwiches and locally-roasted coffee. “Our bagels come from New York City because you can’t make them like they do down there, so why reinvent the wheel?” Kelly said. “We’ve heard it’s the New York City water that make these bagels so delicious, and there’s a need for good bagels up here.”

In December, Common Grounds launched “A Contest for Hope,” a community initiative designed to grant awards of $250 to non-profits in the Cazenovia area. Community members were invited to respond to the question “What is your greatest hope?” by submitting a drawing, picture, phrase, poem, or anything else that expresses their hope. Each winner was given the opportunity to handpick a non-profit to receive a $250 donation. The winners will have their entries reproduced as greeting cards and will receive boxes of stationery and envelopes from the Cazenovia College Copy Shop to share their hope. According to Common Grounds founder Bob Hood, A Contest for Hope was intended to unite people, lift their spirits, and inspire them to take positive action in their lives and the community. On Jan. 26, Common Grounds announced the four contest winners. Jackie Gamlen selected Friendship Inn Cazenovia as the recipient of her $250 award. Aislin Holdren selected The Haven at Skanda in Cazenovia. Village of Cazenovia Mayor Kurt Wheeler donated his award to Project Café. An anonymous donor selected St. James Roman Catholic Church in Cazenovia.

l From page 1 between, this illustrated presentation will look through the magical lens of glass at the historic architectural expressions of windows,” said Stearns. “Early, Victorian and 20th Century campaigns at perfecting window glass were evident, but they also planted the seeds for the Revival Styles, which included returns to Classical, Renaissance, and Colonial-inspired façade designs. Once more, the old saying, ‘What goes around comes around,’ is shown to be relevant.” Stearns received a bachelor of architecture degree from Cornell University and completed graduate work in 1977 at what was then Cornell’s new preservation planning program. He was the first registered architect to be hired by the New York State Historic Preservation Office. He was also a founder of Adirondack Architectural Heritage, the nonprofit historic preservation organization for NYS’s Adirondack region that undertook a massive campaign in the 1990s to save Camp Santanoni, one of the earliest examples of an Adirondack Great Camp. Winter conditions

In our region this winter has been on the eclectic side with everything from snow and rain to freezing temperatures and intense winds mixed in with relatively mild days. If nothing else it has been hard to predict or know what the weather might bring with any certainty. It was only a couple of weeks ago now that our neighbors to the west were hit with a heavy snowstorm while we got some snow it was nothing near what people in the Buffalo region were dealing with. While the weather and where it will impact are not always easy to predict, we are still in the midst of the winter season and while the forecast might not be certain, it never hurts to be prepared and to keep some safety measures in mind in the event that we do encounter difficult weather conditions. Whether it is from rain, snow or just intense cold, none of us are strangers to frozen windshields and most likely none of us are strangers to seeing another vehicle driving down the road with a small spot carved out where the driver can see, but the rest of the windshield is obscured creating a dangerous situation with low visibility for the driver. AAA recommends that if you have access to a garage or a carport, use it. If you park outside, try to avoid parking under tree branches, power lines or other objects where ice could fall and strike the vehicle. Make sure your wipers are turned off before you exit the vehicle. Avoid starting a vehicle with wipers turned on that may be frozen in place. Make sure you have a quality ice scraper to effectively scrape away ice once it begins to soften up. Avoid pounding on the ice and don’t use your scraper on painted surfaces. Make sure that you have a full supply of winter-quality windshield washer solvent. There are commercial deicer products that can be used to help melt away ice from your windshield or your locks. If we have snow it is also highly recommended to make sure it is cleared away from all windows and the roof of the vehicle so that it does not fall down from the roof, obscuring the windshield. While driving under snowy and icy conditions it is recommended to accelerate and decelerate slowly. Applying the gas slowly to accelerate is the best method for regaining traction and avoiding skids. Don’t try to get moving in a hurry. Remember, it takes longer to slow down on icy roads and you should increase following distances. The normal dry pavement following distance of three to four seconds should be increased to eight to ten seconds. This increased margin of safety will provide greater distance to stop. Know your brakes. Whether you have antilock brakes or not, the best way to stop is threshold braking. Keep the heel of your foot on the floor and use the ball of your foot to apply firm, steady pressure on the brake pedal. Don’t power up hills. Applying extra gas on snow-covered roads may only result in spinning your wheels. Try to get a little momentum going before you reach the hill and let it carry you to the top. Try to avoid stopping while going up a hill. As you reach the crest of the hill, reduce your speed and proceed downhill as slowly as possible.

‘Excellent’ coverage

To the editor: I’m writing to commend the excellent in-depth coverage of Eagle News reporter Kate Hill in the January 17, ’24 issue of the Cazenovia Republican regarding a potential reorganization of the Morrisville and Cazenovia school districts. The proposal to “merge and stay the same” is complicated. We are fortunate to have the leadership of the Cazenovia School Board and Superintendent DiFulvio in evaluating its advantages and disadvantages. Ensuring financial sustainability for the future for both school districts is why shared district services are under discussion. The most notable benefit of the merger seems to be increased state aid for building improvements and operations for Cazenovia School District. Also notable is the fact that Morrisville and Cazenovia school districts pay the lowest taxes in Madison County. Given the reputation of our district and the accomplishments of our students in Cazenovia, this is a testament to the excellence of the teachers, school board and administration of CCSD. As taxpaying residents of Cazenovia, we have nothing to lose and much to gain from serious consideration of the potential re-organization. This is why first-rate reporting like that of journalist Kate Hill is so important. Small town newspapers are closing shop every day, which is a huge loss for their readers. We are fortunate to have local news coverage that enables us to be informed and in possession of the facts as we face important decisions that impact the future of our children and our community. Gratitude

To the editor: I am writing to express my gratitude to Mark Olson for his 20 years of faithful service to the people of Fayetteville as our mayor. Mark has joyfully served the interest of the citizens in a friendly and easy manner. I am sorry to see Mark giving up the village he loves, but I am encouraged by the possibility of another long time Fayettevillian, Mike Small to take his place. Mike is well known as the funeral director of a major funeral service. Mike will have the best interest for the people of Fayetteville at heart. The people will be primary to him. Having known Mark for all of his life and Mike for most of his, I know for a fact that Fayetteville will be in good hands. Kathy Elliott Fayetteville

Honoring Black History Month

To the editor: Since February is Black History Month, the Syracuse Stamp Club would like to alert everyone that the United States Postal Service, on Jan. 31 in Manhattan, will be releasing the 47th stamp in the Black Heritage series. This stamp honors Constance Baker Motley, the first African-American woman known to have argued a case before the United States Supreme Court, and the first to serve as a federal judge. Motley (b. Sept. 14, 1921 - d. Sept. 28, 2005) was an American jurist and politician, and was the first African-American woman appointed to the federal judiciary, serving as a United States district judge of the United States Court for the Southern District of New York (Manhattan, Bronx and Hudson Valley). She was a key strategist of the civil rights movement, a state senator, and Borough President of Manhattan. She was hired by the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund as a staff attorney in 1946 after receiving her law degree from Columbia’s Law School. She continued her work with the organization for more than twenty years. As the fund’s first female attorney, she became its Associate Counsel, making her a lead trial attorney in a number of early and significant civil rights cases including representing Martin Luther King Jr., the Freedom Riders, and the Birmingham Children Marchers. In 1950, she wrote the original complaint in the Brown v. Board of Education case. She was a law clerk to Thurgood Marshall, aiding him in that case. ers to class, took voluminous notes by hand and studied, sometimes well into the night. A big spend for us would be a honey bun and coffee at one of the restaurants on Marshall Street. We expected that unacceptable work would be identified by our teachers so that we could learn from it. There was, how can I capture this, a sense of civility in our relationships with others, with friends, with colleagues with our educators. The latter were honored for their knowledge and for the rigor they demanded. It wasn’t that there weren’t bumps, difficulties, all the weaknesses that human interactions can generate, it is simply that we had more civilized ways of dealing with such things. When as a child I scrawled the word etiquette on the top of my elementary school page, it didn’t dawn on me that I was learning to work with crinkly as well as smooth yarn, to knit a life with what had been given in time honored respectful ways. While I hated those dark blue bullet proof sweater my Mom knitted, I do love the lesson that came with them. Ann Ferro is a mother, a grandmother and a retired social studies teacher. We put the C-N-Y in Explore

Inside your newspaper this week you will find our From the Explore CNY supplement. Managing Let’s take a look at that Editor word, “supplement,” for a Jennifer Wing second. According to the Brittanica Dictionary, a supplement is: “An extra part that is added to a book or newspaper.” But that is only the second definition listed. The first is: “Something that is added to something else in order to make it complete.” When it comes to Explore CNY, both definitions certainly apply. Our newspapers bring you stories about life in your area – news about the happenings in your neighborhood – about local politics and government, schools, business and your hometown teams – and stories about your neighbors - their accomplishments, their milestones, even news of their passing and where one can pay their respects. We also offer opportunities for you to voice your opinions and read others’ thoughts through letters to the editor on our opinion page. We have survived the challenges of an uptick in digital news and even a pandemic and have continued to bring you the news of your hometown, like a needlepoint sampler that shares our common roots and future goals. It’s been difficult, at times, but we’ve made it work, and have never missed a week, or a beat. Very sweet and maybe a little nutty - that’s Nestle! This chocolate lab/pit mix came to the shelter as a stray with her friend, Heath, in May of 2023. (This is way too long for a dog to be in a shelter!) Heath has been adopted, but Nestle’s still waiting. She’s 58 pounds and about six years old. She’s been an ambassador at some shelter events, and she did great. She’s smart, energetic, enjoys treats, car rides, toys, and attention. She’s a proud member of the doggy playgroup and she was the star of the shelter tricks class (see video). We think she would do well in an active home with respectful kids and maybe other dogs. If you have a hankering for something sweet, you’ll love Nestle! In order to adopt, you must fill out an application, pay an adoption fee, and have your pets up to date on their rabies vaccines. All adopted cats and dogs are spayed or neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on their vaccinations before they go home. CNY SPCA is located at 5878 East Molloy Road, Syracuse. For more information about adoption, call 315-454-4479, email frontdesk1@cnyspca. org, or visit cnyspca.org.

These stamps feature 10 sepia-toned portraits of men and women who escaped slavery and/or helped others escape: Catharine Coffin, Frederick Douglass, Thomas Garrett, Laura Haviland, Lewis Hayden, Harriet Jacobs, William Lambert, Jermain Loguen, William Still and Harriet Tubman. l From page 1 funded through the Stone Quarry Art Park (SQAP) visiting artist program. According to SQAP CEO Emily Zaengle, Heagerty’s contributions have included coordinating a Saturday afternoon/evening line-up of events designed to draw visitors to the village, promoting Winter Fest to audiences in Syracuse, and reaching out to local businesses to coordinate their involvement in the celebration. One such business is the Pewter Spoon café and eatery on Albany Street, which is partnering with SQAP and Cazenovia artist Patricia Christakos to bring outdoor art to the village. On Saturday, Feb. 10, Christakos’ video art will be projected onto the east-facing wall of the Pewter Spoon building from 4 to 7 p.m. “We’re very excited to be working in collaboration with the Stone Quarry Art Park and Michael John Heagerty on an evening art exhibition right on our building,” said Pewter Spoon Man-

ager Ava Carmeli. “We hope that this event will be the first of many public art exhibits on our building and in the village.” Carmeli added that Pewter Spoon will have extended hours that evening and will be offering food and drink specials. Heagerty has also helped coordinate Saturday’s ice sculpture demonstrations with The Ice Farm from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Cazenovia Public Library, Hot Flip Drinks — mixed drinks heated with a red-hot iron — with the British Blacksmith from 3 to 5 p.m. at Madison County Distillery, and a “Night Light Skate” from 3 to 6 p.m. at Burton Street Ice Rink. According to Gambee, Caz Life is excited to introduce a “Medallion Hunt” to the Winter Fest offerings this year. She explained that the Caz Life team has created a medallion that will be hidden somewhere in Cazenovia. “It will be on public property and easily accessible to anyone looking for it,” she said. “Clues will be announced once daily via the Caz Life Facebook

Once the medallion is found, Caz Life can be called, and the $250 prize can be claimed.” Caz Life is also partnering with Meier’s Creek Brewing Co. to bring the sport of curling to the Cazenovia community this winter by installing a curling sheet on the brewery’s back lawn. “We think that curling is such a unique winter event, perfect for cold weather communities like ours,” said Gambee. “After speaking with some local curling enthusiasts, we decided to test the waters this season to see if this could be a tourism draw within and outside of the community. Often, businesses can see the winter as a time to hibernate, but we were curious to see if [making] some efforts to embrace winter [could have an impact]. Caz Life initially reached out to Meier’s Creek in November to see if we could build a program together, and we were very excited to hear that they were interested in joining us in this effort. We hope that in years to come, curling might be a sport played at multiple venues within Cazenovia. There has been talk of creating leagues and tournaments, and we are just excited to be a part of the conversation.” If the weather cooperates, Meier’s Creek will be hosting guided “Learn to Curl” sessions on Friday and Saturday during Winter Fest. Registration is required and can be done at cazenovia.com/events-1/learnto-curl-at-meiers-creek. “Since curling is weather-depen-

dent, we will only open up registration when we feel comfortable that it will be cold enough for the event to proceed,” Gambee said. “We hope to have a clear idea of what the weather [will] be about a week ahead of time.” To learn more about Caz Life, visit Cazenovialife.com and the Caz Life Facebook page.

Promoting Caz as a winter/outdoor recreation destination

According to Lines, the $40,000 Stirpe grant that was awarded to CazArts is also funding a digital marketing campaign to promote winter in Cazenovia. Recently, CACDA was awarded $50,000 through Empire State Development’s Market New York program to host and market events focused on enhancing Cazenovia’s visibility as an outdoor recreation destination and promoting the historic business district. “The chamber — Caz Life — will be providing the matching funds and will be partnering with [CACDA] to decide how best to use the grant,” said Lines. many casual fans and quite a few long-time fans just plain tuning out the endless talk about money and morals. What is different about Dunlap’s particular case is that he is taking this leap in the middle of the college golf season. Usually top players, even the ones who leave early, wait to turn pro until the summer, some of them eager to savor every last drop of the college experience before it all turns into a cruel business where only a select few achieve riches. Then again, why would Dulap wait? There was nothing more to accomplish in the amateur ranks other than to perhaps get an NCAA individual or team title, and even in the era of NIL, that wasn’t going

In early 21st-century sports, it’s impossible to have any logical discussion without veering into arguments, shouting, extreme positions and GOAT talk, all of which quickly numbs the mind. Caz girls basketball falls to Skaneateles, Marcellus by Phil Blackwell

Typically, when one basketball team holds the opposition under 40 points, it will be in good shape. Yet when the Cazenovia girls basketball team did just this in last Wednesday’s game at Skaneateles, it suffered through a far worse struggle with its own offense in a 39-20 defeat. Skaneateles did have some confidence from knocking off Class B contender Jordan-Elbridge earlier in the week, and it was also Senior Night, which can cause distractions – or lead to an emotionally charged performance.

It proved the latter for Skaneateles in this Laker duel as it held Cazenovia to just four points in the opening period and two points in the second quarter, establishing a 22-6 margin along the way. Though it improved in the game’s latter stages, Cazenovia was too far behind, ultimately hitting on just seven field goals, four of them by Ella Baker, who finished with 11 points, more than half her team’s output. Fittingly, it was a senior, Ayla Pas’cal, leadng the modest Skaneateles attack thanks to her 12 points, while another senior, Bella Pietropaoli, got eight points and Claire Neumann finished with seven

points. Another big challenge came on Friday night when state Class B no. 12-ranked Marcellus came to Buckley Gym and, led again by freshman Tenly Baker, handled Cazenovia 59-21. Back when these teams first played in December, Baker had made Cazenovia pay for all the attention it gave to star junior Cece Powell, earning 35 points and 11 rebounds in a 76-31 decision. Here, it wasn’t as pronounced, but Baker’s 23 points still topped the Lakers roster as Powell, who just passed the 1,000-point mark for her career, added 15 points. Baker and Hdyden Bubble each led Cazenovia

with seven points. Chittenango continued to have difficulty keeping up with high-caliber opposition as, in last Thursday’s game against Mexico, it lost a 42-27 decision to the Tigers. Held to three points in the first quarter, the Bears were in catch-up mode all night, ultimately seeing Abby Scheidelman pick up 12 points, including a trio of 3-pointers. However, the rest of the roster had just six total field goals, while Mexico had Giana Cutuli earn 14 points, helped by seven points from Caprice Cutuli and six points from Adriana DiManto.

Boys Lakers hit skid, fall to top-ranked Marcellus by Phil Blackwell

As is often the case in high school boys basketball, matching performance with consistency can prove quite elusive, regardless of the quality of the opponent. Cazenovia had won four games in a row to climb to the .500 mark, only to see that win streak end on Jan. 20 when it dropped an exciting 76-71 decision to Section IV’s Waverly at Buckley Gym. Having beat Solvay just the night before, the Lakers fell behind 43-27 by halftime and could not make up that ground, despite big games from Ben Bianco and Tanner Lawson. All told, Bianco had 29 points, with Lawson adding 22 points, the pair combining for eight 3-pointers as Edmond Richardson (eight points) and Bobby Livingston (six points) each converted twice beyond the arc and Izaak Gilbert also had six points. When it hosted Lakers duel with Skaneateles last Tuesday night, Cazenovia barely got half the total it did against Waverly and lost by a score of 57-39. Both sides struggled to score baskets in the first half, Cazenovia leaning heavily on its defense to overcome those struggles and lead 22-18 going into the break.

Then everything clicked for Skaneateles, from scoring on one end to limiting Cazenovia to five points in a decisive third quarter. For the night, Bianco had 22 points and Lawson nine points, but the rest of the host Lakers were held to just three total field goals. And all of this came before Cazenovia visited state Class B no. 1-ranked Marcellus on Friday night, where it was close for a quarter before reality settled in and the Lakers lost, 80-46, to the Mustangs. Though the visiting Lakers shot well in that opening period, it still trailed 21-19 after it, and Marcellus, over the course of the next two periods, outscored Cazenovia 43-17. Bianco still finished with 19 points, leading all individuals, but no one else had more than Lawson’s total of nine points. Will Burnett, with 17 points, was one of four Mustangs in double figures with Mitch Donegan (14 points), Will Kershaw (12 points) and Tucker Burnett (10 points). Meanwhile, Chittenango was enjoying the nightly spectacle of Ryan Moesch, who was one of the nation’s top scorers among juniors averaging 37.5 points per game. Though the Bears’ game with East Syracuse Minoa was postponed and re-

Caz hockey takes 3-1 defeat to F-M by Phil Blackwell

Where exactly the Cazenovia ice hockey team will ultimately fit in the crowded, parity-filled area Division I playoff picture will get resolved during the last two weeks of the regular season. The Lakers had a great opportunity to help its own cause when it traveled to Cicero Twin Rinks to face Fayetteville-Manlius last Wednesday night, only to get stifled most of the way in a 3-1 loss to the state no. 15-ranked Lakers. Right from the outset, F-M was the aggressor, scoring all of its goals in the first two periods while taking 30 shots, more than double Cazenovia’s total of 14. Other than a second-period goal by Rhiley Montoya assisted by Henry Miller and

Finn Hagan, Cazenovia got nothing past Hornets goalie Chris Finger, who amassed 40 saves and, by doing so, preserved his team’s two-goal margin throughout a scoreless final period. Tucker Ives, in the net for the Lakers, recorded 38 saves, but gave up two goals to F-M’s Henry Dougherty, with the other goal earned by Gavin Patnode. Drew Mayne, Joey Leveroni, Grayson Mucha, Will Sanzone and Connor McDonald each had one assist. Cazenovia was back at Morrisville State IcePlex Monday night to face CNY Fusion, the combined Fulton-Liverpool side emerging as a surprising title contender, before a weekend trip to games against Northeast Clinton and Plattsburgh.

Cazenovia wrestler fourth at states by Phil Blackwell

Throughout this winter, Cazenovia girls wrestler Janessa Santiago has established her credentials enough that she was invited to compete last Friday in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Girls Invitational at SRC Arena. Not only did Santiago compete, she earned a podium finish at 152 pounds, part of a strong Section III contingent that dominated this particular weight class. In the opening round of the 16-girl bracket, Santiago wasted little time, taking just 68 seconds to pin Cobleskill-Richmondville’s Jacklyn Van Wormer. Moving on to the quarterfinals, Santiago faced Bay Shore’s Brooke-Lyn Murray and, though pushed into the third period, managed to earn a second pin when she finished off Murray with 17 seconds left. Then, in the semifinals, it was Santiago’s Section III teammate, Little Falls’ Brooke Shepardson, who used her experience (she was fourth in this tournament at 145 pounds in 2023) to push past Santiago 13-5. Now in the consolation bracket, Santiago got one more pin, over Liberty’s Zoe Kip, to reach the third-place bout, where she battled hard against White Plains’ Lauren Garcia, but lost 6-3. Still, it was a fourth-place finish, one made more satisfying by the fact that Shepardson would go on to win the state title, pinning the top seed, Shenendehowa’s Isabella Gretzinger, late in the second period of the championship bout. A peak moment for the Cazenovia boys wrestling team arrived on Jan. 19 and 20 when it went to the Mustang Duals at Mount Markham and, with an 8-1 record, emerged victorious. In the opening round, the Lakers topped Cooperstown 48-27, then suffered its lone defeat in the second match when it fell to Saranac 38-33. Six straight wins would follow, though. Topping Goshen 45-21 to begin this streak, Cazenovia then prevailed 45-30 over Whitesboro and routed Dolgeville 57-16. Herkimer was next, and the Lakers beat the Magicians 48-21 before holding

off Beekmantown 40-30. Two more close matches remained. Against New Hartford, Cazenovia pulled it out 36-33 when, in the final bout at 145 pounds, Gabriel Sanchez pinned Connor Sonson in the second period. Riley Fowler (215 pounds), Gryphon Foster (101 pounds) and Cullen Arnold (124 pounds) all earned pins, too. And in the final match, the Lakers got past host Mount Markham 38-33. Fittingly, it ended with Broden Enders, at 152 pounds, pinning Alekx Abanatha to claim the team title to complete an 8-1 performance for the meet that was equaled by Arnold. Sanchez had a 7-1 record at the meet, with Foster at 7-2 thanks to six pins and Bryce Enders at 7-2 alternating between 160 and 170 pounds. Finn Tobin, mostly wrestling at 170 (with one bout at 160), went 6-2, Isaac Genter finished 6-3, with all but one of his bouts at 108 pounds, and Evan Rice equaled that mark at 190 pounds. Luther Dannon, mostly wrestling at 285 pounds, went 5-4, with Fowler recording a 4-3 record. Exactly one week later, Cazenovia would head to Jordan-Elbridge for the Onondaga High School League Liberty division championships along with Chittenango, who in last Wednesday’s match with Hannibal prevailed 60-15 over the Warriors. Peter Schulz, at 215 pounds, got it going for the Bears, pinning Joe Przepiora in 27 seconds before a second-period fall by Elijah McDonald (285 pounds) over Cody Miner. At 116 pounds, Trevor McDonald pinned Jose Cruz in the second period before Dan Mahle, at 131 sounds, earned Chittenango’s fastest pin of the season, taking just 11 seconds to finish off David Sweeney. Two more pins followed, Kole Smith (145) over Ben Hess in 43 seconds and Edward Geer (160) over Jayden Hutchinson right at the end of the first period. Noah Haarman (108 pounds), Dylan Brownson (152) and Chris Blair (170) all claimed forfeits.

scheduled to Feb. 15, it did play Friday at Mexico and put up a sensational firsthalfshooting performance on the way to beating the Tigers 88-66. Whether it was Moesch driving to the basket or Brendon Barnard hitting on outside shots, everything Chittenango tried early seemed to go in, leading to a 39-point first quarter and 30 more in the second for a 69-28 edge at the break. Only because it was so far ahead did the

Bears ease up, but it still finished with 13 3-pointers. Moesch had another 40-point performance with 15 field goals, three of threm 3-pointers, and came within one point of reaching 600 for the season. Barnard’s five 3-pointers accounted for most of his 16 points. Holden Taylor converted twice beyond the arc and got six points. Chittenango has games this week against Cortland and Institute of Technology Central.

Chittenango boys volleyball undefeated by Phil Blackwell

Week after week and win after win, the Chittenango boys volleyball team remains the standard among Central New York winter sides, undefeated and rarely facing a serious challenge. Even when one seemed at hand last Friday night against 8-0 Central Valley Academy, the Bears were able to turn it back, beating the Thunder in three sets. A close first set went 25-22 in Chittenango’s favor. The second set ended 25-17, and when CVA pushed in the third, it still couldn’t extend the contest as the Bears closed it out 27-25. Between 24 assists, seven kills and seven digs, Cole Thomas led an effort where Ryan Thousand had 11 kills and 11 digs. Rodger Mulholland equaled Thomas with seven kills and earned nine digs as Jackson Blaszkow had six kills and 10 digs. Jacob Wagner got five kills as he and Andrew Uryniak earned six digs apiece. A night earlier, Chittenango swept VernonVerona-Sherrill 25-14, 25-19, 25-4, nearly getting a third-set shutout. Mulholland earned six aces, a season high, to go with nine kills, four assists and five digs. Thomas added three aces as he got 34 assists and 13 digs, while Thousand pounded out 18 kills. Wagner had four kills and two aces, Blaszkow adding three kills. That hasn’t proven the case, though, for the Chittenango girls, whose rough stretch began last Wednesday night in the course of a three-set defeat to East Syracuse Minoa. This wasn’t a big surprise, though. A week earlier, ESM had handed Camden its first defeat of the season after it roared past Christian Brothers Academy, and it stayed hot here. All match long, the Spartans proved talented enough that, during one rally, Leah Rehm kept a rally alive with a backwards kick, fit-

ting given her stardom in soccer. The 25-10, 25-20, 25-17 score reflected this dominance, Rehm earning 17 digs and Kristina Levkovich leading with nine assists to go with three aces and five digs. Brooke Kirkpatrick got seven assists and four digs, while up front Akuot Kuany earned 10 kills, four blocks and two aces. On the Bears’ side, Sydney Martin was held to six assists. Stephanie Huckabee had four kills, with Julia Spencer, Ally Smith and Alex Sylstra getting three kills apiece, Sylstra adding six digs behind Smith’s nine digs and Spencer’s eight digs. After all this, Chittenango would, back on its home court, try to bounce back 24 hours later against the same CBA side it lost to less than two weeks earlier, on Jan. 12. But the Brothers prevailed again, taking the first set 25-21 and what turned out to be a pivotal second set 26-24, which allowed CBA to withstand Chittenango winning the third 25-17 and then rally to win a tense fourth set 25-22, led by Carleah Morgia’s 28 kills, Josie Lachut’s 43 digs and Josie DePalma’s 22 digs. For the Bears, Spencer earned 12 kills and 13 digs, with none of her teammate earning more than two kills. Huckabee and Smith both had 12 digs, Sylstra getting 10 digs and five assists as Martin had seven assists and seven digs. Carolne Litman also had seven digs. This skid continued Saturday with a three-set defeat to Camden, who won a close opening set 27-25 and then took each of the next two sets by equal 25-20 margins. Spencer still had 11 kills and 10 digs, with Huckabee getting seven kills and 19 digs. Smith and Caroline Litman had 11 digs apiece as Martin earned 12 assists and Sylstra eight assists. Smith contributed three aces as the Blue Devils’ Julia Holmes, with 30 assists, fed it to Hailey Gladle (15 kills, five blocks) and Olivia Hooker (10 kills).

Be prepared for ‘FGS’ Whether you have played 10 rounds of golf in your life or 1,000 rounds, if you are truly honest with yourself, the chances that you have suffered from some form of FGS is probably 99.9%. In other words, you can “bet the kitchen sink”, as my father used to say, that you have already had it. It’s one of those conditions that all of us can relate to immediately, whether we truly understand what it means or not....it just sounds right (FRUSTRATED GOLFER SYNDROME). You know what’s coming...I did some extensive research to find out if anyone in the world understands what “causes” FGS and if there are any “cures” for CNY golfers when it happens to them. I found someone. His name is Michael Bader D.M.H., a practicing therapist for over 30 years who wrote an article about FGS in 2009 for Psychology Today. The reason I selected Dr. Baders article is because he is also a “practicing golfer” and I believe that is a necessary “preexisting condition” in order to clearly relate to golfers experiences on the course. Dr. Bader believes that golf is an “emotional roller coaster” for most who play the game and that this is especially true for men. I have no idea how he arrived at that conclusion but I strongly believe he hates men who continue to suffer from FGS and who refuse therapy because they are too proud to admit they have it. And further, that they chose to suffer...day, after day, after day during the golf season....including himself. He describes one example of FGS this way, “I have treated hundreds of people who punish themselves for all sorts of imaginary crimes and faults but rarely have I seen the type of ‘raw self hatred and despair’ that can consume the

average golfer whose crime may be no more grievous than missing a 3ft putt”. There you have it...”raw self hatred and despair”.... the good Doctor has nailed it! He believes, “Golfers intolerant of imperfection drive themselves and others crazy” and even quotes sports writer Jim Murray who once said, “”Golf is not a game, it is bondage. It was obviously devised by a man torn with guilt eager to atone for his sins”. Bingo!...Doc and Jim get the concept perfectly and I believe both of them are nuts and suffer from the incurable form of FGS. Oh, I”m sure there are a few of you who are going to poo-hoo this article and will also refuse therapy, but thankfully 99.9% of CNY golfers recognize the symptoms of FGS and get their dose of weekly therapy from my radio show on Saturday mornings from 7-8AM. Yes, you can “bet the kitchen sink”, I will be talking about FGS this Saturday and hopefully will have Dr. Bader as a guest to talk about the cures for this very serious mental disorder that continues to be a big “pain in the butt” for most CNY golfers. Confession ... I am currently suffering from “FGS” down in Florida. Listen Saturday, February 3rd from 7 to 8 a.m. on News Radio 570 WSYR (AM) or 106.9 (FM) ... I will explain.
