C-NS’s Benedict reaches 1,000 career points by Phil Blackwell
Right from the time he started piling up baskets as a freshman, Cicero-North Syracuse boys basketball star Andrew Benedict was on a path to some milestones. One of them was reached last Wednesday night at North Syracuse Junior High School when Benedict surpassed 1,000 career points, but did a whole lot more as the state Class AAA no. 16ranked
Northstars bashed Oswego 99-51. Entering the game, Benedict had 990 points, and wasted little time getting to 997. Then, with a nifty dribble that got a defender out of the way, Benedict, from the left of the circle, drilled a 3-pointer to reach the 1,000 mark. Though seven previous players in C-NS history had got to 1,000, no one had done so since Justin Kozlowski, who graduated in 2000. Michael Brown holds the school record of 1,926, with Benedict and Brown ahead

A far bigger test loomed Friday when state Class AAA no. 15-ranked Niagara Falls paid a visit. Meanwhile, Liverpool, who fell to no. 26 in the state AAA rankings after its overtime defeat to
West Genesee on Jan. 5, returned to winning form last Wednesday by defeating PSLA-Fowler 57-38. At least in the early going, the Warriors’ offense showed some life, steadily working its way to a 38-21 advantage that it preserved throughout the second half even as the offense cooled down. Most of Kaelem Haskins’ team-high 13 points came from three 3-pointers. Alex Trombley had 10 points,
with Freddie Fowler adding seven points and Sean Frawley contributing six points. Now five consecutive road games loomed for Liverpool, beginning Friday at Fayetteville-Manlius, Liverpool is heavily favored in games this week at Central Square and Oswego, while C-NS would travel Tuesday to face state Class AA no. 17-ranked Fulton.

The Liverpool Central School District is seeking nominations for its Fine Arts Hall of Fame. The Fine Arts Hall of Fame was established in 2003 through the efforts of VITAL (Vision In The Arts at Liverpool,) a not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting the arts in Liverpool. The Fine Arts Hall of Fame seeks to honor those who have contributed to the arts (music, visual arts, dance and theater.) There are three categories in which individuals may nominate someone for this award: 3 Contributor: A person who has given time, talent or resources to the fine arts program of Liverpool, its staff and students. 3 Mentor: A former or retired Liverpool fine arts staff member or administrator who has provided leadership, guidance, inspiration and innovation to the fine arts at Liverpool. 3 Alumnus: A person who graduated from Liverpool High School and participated in the LHS fine arts program (academic or extra-curricular LCSD sanctioned activities). Focus on brain health
hile the village and its surroundings are trying to make sense of the news that Nojaim’s is closing and being replaced by a convenience store and gas station, let me share this with you. I am 83 years old. Whatever happens because of Nojaim’s closing will have limited effect on whatever time I have on this earth. I will, very sadly, adjust, sad at the loss of an institution that has so positively affected the life of the village and those who come to shop there from as far away as Lafayette of the east side of Skaneateles Lake. It will be up to those who are younger to work through the options and create the resources in which the village can take pride. This is an opportunity not to be shirked. If I were twenty years younger…heck even ten years…but.. I love Nojaim’s. There isn’t a week that we don’t spend money there. We may go in for eggs, particularly the jumbo eggs but leave with much more. We see something we forgot we needed, might need or is on sale. We are there, at the very least, three or four times every week. “Is there anything you need at Nojaim’s?” is the frequent query by my spouse on his way back from his office in Syracuse. Most of the time, my answer is “yes.” I buy all of our meat from Nojaim’s. Besides that, I love a particular brand of ginger snaps that Nojaim’s carries. And I realize that, like the ginger snaps, waste basket liners are not a world-shaking need, but there is a brand of liner that I really appreciate and can only get at Nojaim’s. I also always buy one of their unbelievably tasty in-store made chicken pot pies
As we start off 2024, the Alzheimer’s Association is encouraging people to put a focus on their brain health as part of their New Year’s resolutions. According to the association, Alzheimer’s disease is expected to impact nearly 13 million Americans by 2050, including 410,000 New Yorkers today. There is increasing evidence to suggest that what is good for the heart is good for our brains, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. Research has shown lifestyle changes like improving diet and exercising regularly have helped drive down death rates from cancer, heart disease and other major diseases. These same lifestyle changes may also reduce or slow your risk of cognitive decline, which is often a precursor to Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Keeping our brains healthy is not something we should worry about only as we get older. It should be a lifelong effort. The Alzheimer’s Association has shared some ideas and tips to help people consider steps they can take in their own lives. These include things like managing your blood pressure. People treated by FDA-approved medications to a top (systolic) blood pressure reading of 120 instead of 140 were 19% less likely to develop mild cognitive impairment, according to a study led by researchers at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Those people also had fewer signs of damage on brain scans, and there was a possible trend toward fewer cases of dementia. The Alzheimer’s Association also recommends having your hearing checked. Hearing loss is present in 65% of adults over age 60, according to researchers. The ACHIEVE study looked at a subgroup of older adults with hearing loss who were at higher risk for cognitive decline (about one-quarter of the total study population) and showed that those participants at highest risk for cognitive decline who utilized hearing aids and hearing counseling for three years cut their cognitive decline in half (48%). According to the association getting an annual flu vaccination was associated with a 40% decrease in the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease over the next four years, according to researchers from The University of Texas’ McGovern Medical School who found that even a single flu vaccination could reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s by 17%. The Alzheimer’s Association also notes that 16% of the world’s population struggles with constipation – more among older adults due to fiber-deficient diets, lack of exercise and the use of certain medications. Researchers found that bowel movements of every three days or less was associated with 73% higher odds of subjective cognitive decline and long-term health issues like inflammation, hormonal imbalances and anxiety/depression. It is also recommended to cutback on ultra-processed foods. People who consume the highest amount of ultraprocessed foods have a 28% faster decline in global cognitive scores – including memory, verbal fluency, and executive function – compared to those with lower consumption, according to research involving half a million people living in the UK. High consumption was defined as more than 20% of daily caloric intake. Ultra-processed foods are those that go through significant industrial processes and contain large quantities of fats, sugar, salt, artificial flavors/ colors, stabilizers and/or preservatives. Examples include sodas, breakfast cereals, white bread, potato chips, and frozen foods, such as lasagna, pizza, ice cream, hamburgers and fries. Being social is also highly recommended according to the association. Add “hang out with friends” and “have fun” to your New Year’s resolutions list. For example, enroll in a dance class with a friend. Alzheimer’s researchers are now looking into whether increased socialization, along with a “cocktail” of lifestyle interventions including improved diet, exercise, cognitive stimulation and self-monitoring of heart health risk can protect cognitive function. The Alzheimer’s Association’s U.S. study to protect brain health through lifestyle intervention to reduce risk (U.S. POINTER) is a two-year clinical trial that hopes to answer this question, and is the first such study to be conducted of a large group of Americans nationwide. There is currently no certain way to prevent Alzheimer’s and other dementias, but there is much to be gained by living a healthy lifestyle and adopting brain health habits that you enjoy according to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Ann Ferro or several of their store-made banana breads. I have friends who come in from Fayetteville and Syracuse to get one of the chicken pot pies. They are that good. There’s also the fact that you never know what special cheese is found on the shelves above the pizza dough and they have an incredible ham salad that is Rev. Muscolino’s favorite (mine too.) You know, for a store of its size, it is surprising how it is able to offer such a wide variety of services. Most of us know of the great lunch meals that they produce, everything from fried chicken to beef stroganoff. The beer cooler is impressive as is the dairy aisle. My spouse is enamored with the fried fish on Fridays. Are the prices a bit higher? Sure. It is a small village grocery not able to compete with the buying power of the big box stores. You do have to drive to those stores using high priced gasoline. All in all the difference is acceptable. Do I shop elsewhere? Yes. My storeroom is full of large cases of paper products and toothpaste purchased at one of the big box outlets where I am just the holder of a wallet or credit card. More important, though, is the “village-ness” of Nojaim’s and that feeling that it belongs to me because I belong as a customer. I love being recognized by the cashiers. “Hi, Ann. How ’ya doing?” from Anna; a courteous smile from Pat and a short update on Josh’s kids from
Josh in in the meat department or his mom in the deli. I like seeing the owner, Rich, is his white coat, fresh from assisting the butcher or stocking shelves, and his welcoming smile, his “Hi, how are you?” I enjoy watching the high school students who work at the cash registers. How many young people got their first job at Nojaim’s? It reminds me of my first job at the IGA in a similar small town. And it is a rare day when I don’t meet someone at Nojaim’s with whom I enjoy chatting, anyone from a former student to a colleague, a friend from church or the library, etc. And we do chat, apologizing to those who need to get by us as we talk. It is a community meeting place. Ask the men who gather there on Sunday mornings for the free coffee and donuts. Forgive me if I see the store in a poetic light. I think of the store as a form of art, one created by Rich Nojaim over the years with hard work, good people and community consciousness. It is an art form we all understand as a projection of our daily lives in its reality of addressing the basic needs of those lives, from sustenance to belonging. Is Nojaim’s perfect? Shiny, decorated with a sophisticated nod to the current styles and colors, promoted with an enormous publicity budget? Absolutely not and that imperfection is why I love it even more. German American Bund recalled in TV doc More than 160 years ago, German immigrants flocked to Liverpool where they worked as salt boilers and willow weavers and candle makers. Just 100 years ago, as Adolf Hitler rose to power in the old country, many Americans of German descent took a liking to the mustachioed Fuhrer. On March 19,1936, Ford factory worker Fritz Kuhn formed the Amerikadeutscher Volksbund also known as the German American Bund in nearby Buffalo. While denying any formal connection to the Nazi Party in the Fatherland, Kuhn enlisted thousands of Bund supporters by using anti-Semitic, anticommunist, pro-German and pro-American propaganda. Within a few years, the Bund had 17 chapters across our Empire State and its headquarters was located in Manhattan.
Madison Sq. Garden rally
In February 1939, more than 20,000 people filled Madison Square Garden for an event billed as a “Pro-American Rally.” A 20-foot-tall image of George Washington hung surrounded by swastikas. Speakers railed against the “Jewish controlled media” and called for a return to a racially “pure” America. The keynote speaker was Fritz Kuhn but the attendees also heard from Gerhard Wilhelm Kunze, the Bund’s national public relations officer. Kunze criticized President Franklin D. Roosevelt by repeatedly referring

to him as “Frank D. Rosenfeld” and calling his New Deal the “Jew Deal.” Most shocking to American sensibilities was the outbreak of violence between protesters and Bund storm troopers. A television documentary about the Bund called “Nazi Town, USA” will premiere on WCNY-TV channel 24 at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23. “Nazi Town, USA” tells the largely unknown story of the Bund, which had scores of chapters in suburbs and big cities across the nation. The Bund represented what many believe was a real threat of fascist subversion in the United States. The Bund held joint rallies with the Ku Klux Klan and ran dozens of summer camps for children centered on Nazi ideology and imagery. Its melding of patriotic values with virulent anti-Semitism raised thorny issues that we continue to wrestle with today.
Was the Bund active here?
Did many Liverpudlians consider themselves Bundsmen? Was there an undercurrent a pro-Nazism here? The rumors have circulated for decades, but they’ve never been proven. Former village historian Dorianne Elitharp Gutierrez remembers that when her family
first moved here in 1955, “My mom told me there had been a Bund here. I was 7. She had to explain what that was. I don’t know where she heard it.” Forty years later, longtime Liverpudlian Ken Hurst seconded Mrs. Elitharp’s information. “Ken told me the same thing,” Dorianne recalls, “but I never saw any direct evidence.”
Church clock still ticking
For most of the month of December the village’s most visible clock tower, the one facing south at the First Presbyterian Church, was noticeably dark after sunset. Just before New Year’s Day, however, church workers replaced an inconveniently located bulb and time could be told all night long. Unfortunately, the clock on the opposite side of the clock tower, the clock facing north, has been running about 20 minutes fast for months. Pastor Garrett Anderson said it will likely be fixed when the old clock undergoes some annual maintenance. “Unlike we humans,” Anderson observed, “the older the clock gets, the faster it runs.”

C-NS wrestlers sweep B’ville
L’pool swimmers beat West Genesee
Armed with a 17-0 record, the CiceroNorth Syracuse wrestling team was supposed to mak its way north to Carthage last Tuesday as the top seed in the six-team field for the Division I portion of the Section III Dual Meet. Then wild winter weather and heavy winds caused power outages throughout the north country and forced a one-week postponement, so instead it was on this Tuesday that the Dual Meet would take place. But each of the C-NS teams went to Baldwinsville last Thursday night – and each of them prevailed after trailing early. The boys Northstars lost the first two bouts but then took over from there, prevailing 43-23 in no small part because it had a wrestler in each weight class and B’ville had to forfeit four times. At 131 pounds, Luke Hogue blanked Scottie Warner 7-0, with Sean Aldrich (138 pounds) following up by topping Michael Spinner 10-2 and Kennedy Thomas (145 pounds) pinning Tyler Lester at the end of the first period. Two more forfeits came late in the match, but at 285 pounds Joe Kobuszowski closed out the night with an 87-second pin over the Bees’ Don’Sincere Allen In the girls match, C-NS rallied from a 24-12 deficit and used four consecutive victories to subdue the Bees 36-24.
All the focus for the Liverpool boys swim team will soon turn to Baldwinsville and the Jan. 23 showdown that will likely determine the Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division regular-season championship. Still, the Warriors had to win all the meets leading up to it, and continued to do so last Tuesday against West Genesee, easing its way to a 100-81 victory over the Wildcats. Three different individuals – Jack Cavallerano, Joey Lisi and Nate Alexander – won two individual events apiece, Cavallerano doing so by beating Sean O’Neil, 22.56 seconds to 24.07, in the 50-yard freestyle and then winning the 100 backstroke in 56.71. Lisi needed 1:05.61 to hold off WG’s David Martin (1:06.88) in the 100 breaststroke after dominating the 100 butterfly, his time of 54.92 seconds more than 11 seconds ahead of any of his rivals. Swimming in the 200 individual medley, Alexander claimed a close duel with James Hayden, 2:15.90 to Hayden’s 2:16.76, and then was victorious in the 100 freestyle in 50.66 seconds, again with O’Neil second in 52.35. Bryce Shutts was active early in the meet, holding off Ryan Vann, 2:02.58 to 2:04.52, in the 200 freestyle after he had helped Hayden, Vann and Tristen Vang get first in the 200 medley relay in 1:52.37 to WG’s 1:54.15. But Vann would have his moment in an exciting 500 freestyle, winning in 5:31.05, barely ahead of the 5:31.26 from Shutts as Colin Gridley picked up 262.10 points on the diving board. Working together, Cavallerano, Lisi, Alexander and O’Neil won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:32.90, while in the 400 freestyle

Beginning that run at 145 pounds, Gabriella Behrer pinned Alexandra Coher in 66 seconds. It took 2:45 for Ariana Welsh to earn her pin over Niayah Jones. Then, to clinch the team victory, Ki’yasia Barner, at 185 pounds, pinned Breanna Leo late in the first period as Rayna AbuAlia (235 pounds) claimed a forfeit. Back in the meet opener at 107 pounds, Shea Ellsworth got a pin of Addyson Kral with 37 seconds left as Sophia Sugrue, at 132 pounds, had a 57-second fall over Cheyenne Chapman. Away from all this, Liverpool earned a 3-2 record during the Jan. 6 Fallen Heroes Tournament at Canastota. A 39-28 loss to Southern Hills began the day, with the Warriors also falling 51-17 to South Jefferson, but then winning three in a row, stopping East Syracuse Minoa 42-27, beating Canastota 48-18 and edging Ogdensburg 33-30. Those first two wins involved a lot of forfeits, but against Ogdensburg the Warriors trailed 30-27 with one bout left, only to see Khai Anderson, at 124 pounds, pin Braxton Kendall in 97 seconds for the winning points. Jude Atchie, wrestling at 101 pounds, won all three of his contested bouts, including tight 6-4 decision over Ogdensburg’s Beau Friot. Carson Rice and Marek Sokolowski both went 2-0 at 131.
L’pool girls hoops beats B’ville, 57-34 by Phil Blackwell
Though it hadn’t even reached mid-January, the Liverpool girls basketball team already possessed impressive victories over most of the other major area Class AAA contenders. There was the tough Dec. 1 win at Bishop Ludden, followed less than two weeks later by the massive comeback from a 22-point deficit to beat rival Cicero-North Syracuse. Then, when 9-2, state no. 17-ranked Baldwinsville visited LHS Gymnasium last Tuesday night, it proved yet another showcase for the Warriors’ ability to dominate a game on its defense alone. Ultimately, Liverpool prevailed 57-34 over the Bees, but the game was settled long before the final horn – in fact, what happened in the opening minutes was all that the Warriors needed. Any time B’ville crossed mid-court, Liverpool picked up pressure. What resulted was a long series of bad passes, turnovers and rushed shots that led to the Bees not getting a single field goal until early in the second quarter. Meanwhile, enough of those turnovers led to baskets on the other end as the Warriors jumped out 13-0, led 25-10 by halftime and kept adding to that margin even when the Bees saw some shots fall in the second half. A’briyah Cunningham produced 18 points before going to the bench early in the fourth
quarter. Angelina Kohler stepped up with 12 points, while Kaylyn Sweeney got all of her eight points in the first half. It continued Thursday night at FayettevilleManlius, Liverpool jumping out 21-5 in the first quarter, eventually building a 50-19 lead through three periods and defeating the Hornets 59-31. Though Cunningham again led with 19 points, Kohler continued her rapid offensive development, finishing with 14 points as Sleeth contributed seven points. Cicero-North Syracuse returned to the state AAA rankings in the no. 25 spot, then went to Oswego last Wednesday and put together its third consecutive lopsided victory, bashing the Buccaneers 67-27. Having rolled past F-M (67-23) and Central Ssquare (76-36) the week before, the Northstars continued to excel in all phases of the game at Oswego’s expense. Leah Benedict led with 15 points, but she had three teammates get to double figures. Olivia Cook poured in 12 points, with Kat McRobbie-Taru and Grace Villnave each earning 11 points and Meadow Werts earning seven points. The Northstars would face two Section II teams, Catholic Central and Bethlehem, last weekend in the Best of New York Tournament and have its own clash with B’ville this Friday after a game with Fulton. Liverpool meets Central Square and Oswego this week.

For the second time this winter, the CiceroNorth Syracuse and Liverpool bowling teams would face one another, only now it was at Flamingo Lanes, which the Warriors call home. No matter where they bowled, though, it was theNorthstars who would seize control of this rivalry, winning 5-2 in both the boys and girls matches over the Warriors. Leading all individuals in the boys match, C-NS’s Tom O’Connell had a 246 and 243, with a 201 in between on his way to a 690 series as teammate Nehemiah Bachmann shot 214, 221 and 193 in his 628 set. Consistent with a 186, 212 and 205, Garrett Arnold finished with a 603 total as Jacob Calabria’s 215 and 211 were part of a 591 series. Sam Hoffman closed with a 213 in his 540 series and Jason Krausnick added a 506 set. Liverpool’s Grady Foster had a 250 in between a 193 and 215 to get a 658 series, pacing the Warriors as Kyle Lake’s 196, 205 and 186 led to a 587 total. Tanner Gist, boosted by a second-game 225, had a 570 series, while Austin Burch got a 560 series. Xavier Theetge opened with a 204 on his way to a 546 series as C-NS’s pinfall of 3,387 just trailed Liverpool’s 3,558. The girls match featured Liverpool’s Sara

Liverpool’s boys had a pinfall of 2,924, led by Theetge, who closed with a 244 game in his 567 series. Foster had a 182 and 180 in his 516 set as Lake had a 489 series and Ray Rucker a 489 series. Jordan Sevigny’s 602 series and Scott Ritcey’s 596 series paced a steady B’ville effort. The reigning state Division I champion B’ville girls beat Liverpool by that same 7-0 margin. With her 475 series, Conover was ahead of Deyneka’s 421 set, but they trailed four Bees as Lizzy Hildreth led with a 579 series (high game 225) ahead of Samantha Hass (527 series), Morgan Diecuch (525 series) and Layla Trendowski (511 series).

Jake Griffin went 2:13.94 to win the 200 IM over the 2:19.41 from the Hornets’ Ben Prendergast as Leo Alexander was third in 2:23.39. Then, in the 100 backstroke, Griffin’s time of 56.38 was the only one under a minute, Ryan Lasher getting third in 1:05.25. For his part, Caden Griffin swept the sprints, taking the 50 freestyle in 23.07 seconds to hold off F-M’s James Cao (23.30) before going to the 100 freestyle and, in 50.87, easily topped the 52.66 from Cao and 53.39 from Derick Wang. A diving sweep was led by Nate Ornoski, whose total of 267.45 points qualified him for the Class A sectional meet as Carter Canastra was second with 222.95 points and Chris Koegel (180.05) was third. C-NS only won of the three relays, doing so in the 200 medley in 1:50.02 to the 1:59.94 from F-M. Brandon Keil was third in the 200 freestyle in 2:01.71 and third in the 100 butterfly in 1:01.24 ahead of Alexander’s 1:02.24 in fourth place. Reece Balduzzi was fourth in the 100 breaststroke. During last Saturday’s Salt City Dive Invitational, Ornoski earned 449.5 points, just half a point short of the 450-point state qualifying standard and second overall to the 494.0 from Central Square’s Truman Reminicky. Gridley finished fifth with 425.65 points and Canastra (371.30) was seventh.
