irVenture Oshkosh 2016 is coming to an end, and, by all accounts, it’s been one for the books. Just hours before voting closed on USA Today’s 10Best Air Show contest, EAA members and supporters managed to pull through and secure a win for EAA AirVenture Oshkosh as the best air show in America providing an extra cause for celebration this year. In spite of some weather that never seemed to do exactly what we wanted, attendance has been exceptional, whether you’re counting people or aircraft. It’s not uncommon for general aviation camping in the North 40 and South 40 to fill up at some point during the week, at least for brief periods, but this year, it happened before 9 a.m. on opening day! To put it simply, this was one amazing year. Asked yesterday what he thought of attendance, Hal Shevers, founder of Sportys, said: “This is the best Saturday crowd I’ve ever seen here.” And he’s been coming to convention since long before EAA moved to Oshkosh. With an event like AirVenture, there’s no such thing as a single star of the show. If there was, it might just have been the

spectacular Martin Mars. The massive water bomber was a huge hit—whether it was on the water at the EAA Seaplane Base or dropping water along the runway during the air shows. (On Friday evening, the Martin Mars aborted according to procedure a fully loaded takeoff when an engine light went on. The airplane struck a submerged object in the lake, but lifted off, dumped its water load and returned to base safely. Repairs are underway that scratched it from yesterday’s air show, but boat tours to the aircraft from the Seaplane Base are continuing.) Another star this year would have to be the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, returning to a warm Oshkosh welcome after more than three decades away. Homebuilt parking was overflowing with airplanes, some that had just been finished, and others that proudly displayed placards proclaiming they’d been flying for 1-, 2-, and even as many as 4,000 hours. The Warbirds area was flush with fighters and bombers, trainers and transports, SEE RECAP ON PAGE 3

Honor Flight FROM PAGE 1 for the day to visit various war memorials and honor them for their service and sacrifices. Families, friends, active duty and reserve military from all branches, and supporters lined a pathway leading from the tarmac to the Ford stage, where the vets were later treated to a concert. Holding up signs that welcomed home the heroes, and waving U.S. flags in the air, family and friends eagerly awaited the return of their loved ones. The Dan Rasmussen crowd of supporters grew larger as the minutes drew nearer to his return. While only his wife and grandson had been there at 6:30 a.m. to see him off, the family now totaled 27, including six children and 13 grandchildren. “My grandson gave up his last day of Boy Scout camp to be here this morning,” said Kathleen Rasmussen, Dan’s wife. “Dan doesn’t talk a lot about Vietnam, but he is proud of his service. And the kids and I are certainly proud of him.” Dan’s daughter, Alysia Pillsbury, signed him up for the Honor Flight, and she spent the day on the Old Glory Honor Flight’s Facebook page, looking at what he and the others were doing. “They had a (water cannon) salute when they arrived in Washington,” she said, adding that hundreds of supporters greeted them at the airport. But those numbers paled in comparison to the crowd that waited on

and Vintage was host to scores of beautiful airplanes from aviation’s golden age, from tiny single seaters to classic airliners. Aerobatic airplanes of all types and eras were out in force at IAC, inspiring future generations of precision pilots. The daily air shows were thrilling, as were their nighttime counterparts, including a commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the 25th of Desert Storm, and a look back by a century at the fragile fighters of World War I. We celebrated anniversaries too, wishing Boeing a happy 100th, along with ultralights, L-birds, Cadets, Chipmunks, not to mention the 50th for the Mustang II and the 30th for the wildly popular Van’s RV-6. The inaugural Founder’s Innovation Prize was awarded in front of a rapt

the AirVenture grounds. Wearing a Vietnam veteran hat, Gary Bodinger of Stockbridge, Wisconsin, was in the front row with his family to support his longtime friend and fellow veteran, Francis Casper of Malone, Wisconsin, who took part in the Honor Flight. “It is an honor to be here,” he said. “There was no applause when we returned from the war. I flew into Green Bay in 1969 with two Green Bay Packers, Donny Anderson and John Brockington. There was a lot of fanfare, but it was all for those two joining the Packers.” Yesterday, as the plane turned from the runway, a fire truck marked its arrival with a water cannon salute. As it came to a stop and ramp workers chocked the wheels, people everywhere held up cameras, video cameras, smart phones, and iPads to take pictures. Even the plane’s pilots got into the act, opening up the cockpit window, unfurling U.S. flags, and taking photos of the large crowd gathered. With bagpipe music playing, and airplanes flying above, the group waited patiently as members of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh football team lifted wheelchairs up to the ramp and helped transport some of the first veterans. With eyes strained as family members tried to locate their loved ones, the applause and cheering were continuous until all 100 were off the plane. “It’s Uncle Neal!” a woman exclaimed. “Look, it’s him!” audience at Theater in the Woods, and moviegoers had something special to look forward to every evening, including a screening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens with a surprise introduction by Harrison Ford. And speaking of Ford, one of our proudest moments of the week was when he flew EAA’s 2 millionth Young Eagle, a staggering milestone in an outreach program that began nearly 25 years ago. Visitors attended more than 1,000 forums and workshops in droves, and kept a record number of exhibitors busy all week. EAA announced a major addition to our Accessible Safety STC, and to celebrate our shared victory in the long-running struggle for third-class medical reform. Of course, the real stars of AirVenture are volunteers. We have a saying about

Others shouted, “Thank you for your service!” While there were a few tears from the veterans, there were many smiles and hugs. Tony Fruzyna, of Green Bay, said the Honor Flight was also more than he expected. “The whole day was absolutely wonderful; it’s impossible to pick out one favorite part.” But the welcome home was certainly top of his list. “I didn’t expect this many people,” he said, noting that about 20 family members came for him. Lew Tesch, of Appleton, returned in 1961 after serving in Army aviation in France. He said the Honor Flight was an amazing experience. “The day was so beautiful that I can’t even describe it,” he said. “When we landed in

Washington, D.C., they paid tribute to us. When we got off the plane, there were bands playing and hundreds of people waiting to greet us.” Veteran Larry Linder, of West Bend, Wisconsin, said he, too, was overwhelmed by the support of the people who came out to recognize him and the other veterans. “It was more than I expected,” Linder said. The welcome to Washington, D.C., and a welcome back in Oshkosh certainly stand out, he said, since when he returned from Vietnam in 1971, there really wasn’t any celebration since the war was so controversial in the United States. “They even tried to fly the Vietnam veterans home at night to keep our return quiet.”

volunteers at EAA headquarters: they could do it without us before we could do it without them. We’re extraordinarily lucky to have more than 6,000 people in our extended family who do anything and everything to make it all happen, year

after year. If you had fun this past week, thank a volunteer! Thanks for coming — or coming back — to your convention. See you next year, July 24 through July 30, for EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2017!

YOUNG EAGLE FULFILLS DREAM

Navy Growlers Come to OSH

PHOTOS BY RANDY DEFAULT

As a boy, Paul Lietzan came to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh to see the military jets and talk to their crews. Now that the roles are reversed, he is encouraging young people to work hard and make their own luck. BY BARBARA A. SCHMITZ

P

aul Lietzan was just 6 years old when he took a Young Eagles flight, but more than two decades later, he says he still has one regret. “After only 10 minutes, I said I wanted to land,” said Lietzan, now a lieutenant and U.S. Navy electronic tactics instructor for the EA-18G Growler. “It was an open cockpit airplane and I remember going through the clouds like I was touching them. Once we got on the ground, I knew I wanted to go back up.” An Appleton, Wisconsin, native, Lietzan said he attended EAA AirVenture Oshkosh for 12 years, and in high school, worked in the Sky Shoppe selling T-shirts. For four years, his family also hosted multiple F-14 aircrews in their home. “I was always interested in aviation, thanks to my mom and dad and Oshkosh,” he said. “I used to have a (child’s cardboard) encyclopedia of military aircraft on a ring and I

would learn all about the different planes. But hosting the F-14 crew sealed my decision.” The Growler is a two-seat craft run by its pilot and the tactical officer. On Friday, Lietzan arrived at AirVenture in the style he had always hoped. He and his crewtmate flew into Oshkosh in the jet, a specialized version of the F-18 Super Hornet, just before the afternoon air show began. “Flying in was easier than I anticipated due to the low ceiling,” he said. “We arrived just minutes before the air show, so it was very quiet except for four T-6s.” With the plane stopped on the runway, he looked up and saw his dad, Ernie. In fact, 14 members of the family were on hand to greet him. “It really was a very proud moment for me as a parent,” his dad said. But with Boeing Centennial Plaza

Lt. Paul Lietzan lets his father, Ernie Lietzan, of Appleton, Wisconsin, sit in the cockpit of his EA-18G Growler. Lietzan, a former Young Eagle who is now a U.S. Navy electronic tactics instructor, flew into EAA AirVenture Oshkosh on Friday.

full, they were forced to park the flight of two jets on Runway 13/31. Ernie said he looked so crestfallen, that someone agreed to drive him to where the jet was being parked. Lietzan said he had been lobbying to fly a Growler into Oshkosh for years. “But this year everything lined up nicely. It’s really been a dream of mine, and to have it fulfilled is pretty neat.” He also has a few other dreams on his bucket list, including building an aircraft with his brothers and earning his pilot’s certificate. He’d also like to fly back into Oshkosh,

and this time display his plane at air show center. While he admits he’s seen “almost everything” that is at Oshkosh multiple times, he said he planned to visit Warbirds and watch the air show again. He also has a message for youth who are interested in aviation. “If you want to do something badly enough, you can do it,” Lietzan said. “Don’t let someone tell you that you can’t. I believe you make your own luck by working hard. The key to success lies in your personal drive.”

Kiwi Kittyhawk With the Killer Looks

BY FREDERICK A. JOHNSEN

A

Curtiss P-40M Kittyhawk that served with the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) during World War II flew to AirVenture 2016 in a spotless rendition of its wartime glory. The pride of Paul Redlich and the restoration team from the Tri-State Warbird Museum, Batavia, Ohio, this P-40 is the product of many years of restoration punctuated by an engine failure that led to even more work. Redlich’s team learned of the P-40M more than 10 years ago. It was found in the 1960s in a New Zealand scrapyard with its one-piece wing sawed off outboard of the landing gear and its Allison engine cut off at the mounts. Restoration began. The museum bought it and returned it to the United States where restoration continued in 2006. By February 2011, the Kittyhawk was flying, when a piston rod punctured the Allison block. A dead-stick landing at the airport caused some damage, and the team went back to work. Their attention to detail encompasses the type of screws Curtiss employed

to hold nonstructural parts on the airframe. The plans call for a cross-head Reed-Prince Pearson screw. When none could be found, they had thousands custom machined. The exact geometry of the Curtiss-specific screws was followed for the last detail in authenticity. “We’re not going to take any guesses” in the restoration process of warbirds, Redlich promised. On the P-40, they reviewed hundreds of photos and documents depicting RNZAF P-40s and their markings before painting the M model. Mike Durkee is a restoration technician for the museum who helps show the P-40M at AirVenture. He points out the aircraft’s three Curtiss Electric propeller blades. The Curtiss decals on the blades look old. That’s because they are; these are NOS — new old stock — prop blades that still carry 70-year-old decals. Elsewhere, the team from Batavia commissioned the manufacture of new-made decals to old Curtiss specifications to apply data and instructional information to the airframe just

the way Curtiss would have done it in 1943. The instrument panel and cockpit furnishings are all old school, including the working vintage radios. One concession to modernity is a small transponder and comm radio hidden inside the fighter’s map case on the right cockpit wall. No modern radios or square glass instruments intrude in the cockpit. Although the .50-caliber machine guns in the wings of this P-40 are inoperable replicas, Durkee said when “you pull the

trigger, the gun solenoids click.” Modern insulated wiring is used throughout the airframe, but the restoration team found a company that could replicate the original color-coded cotton wire covering to apply over the modern stuff for appearances. Durkee said the available imagery of World War II RNZAF P-40s shows they were equipped with smooth treadless tires. In today’s world, these weren’t available, so “we had to buy treaded tires and shave them.”

he support of volunteers is what enables EAA’s Young Eagles program to introduce young people to the world of aviation. Each of the 2016 Young Eagles Volunteer awards winners, who were honored at the Young Eagles awards dinner Wednesday night, have done their part to share The Spirit of Aviation with the next generation. The recipients of this year’s awards are: •Al Moyer, of Amanda, Ohio –Outstanding Chapter Coordinator •John Mininger, of Quakertown, Pennsylvania –Phillips 66 Leadership Award •Jim Casper, of Oshkosh, WI –Outstanding Ground Volunteer Moyer has been involved with the program since it began in 1992 and said he’s amazed at how much its grown. “It’s really surprising,” Moyer said. “I remember the first year when [the chap-

ter] was lucky to fly 10 total. It just gradually caught on over the years, and now I have people I’ve flown coming back with their kids to fly.” Even after flying 846 Young Eagles, Moyer said he’s still rewarded by the reactions of the kids he flies. “The ones who are enthusiastic make it worthwhile, really,” Moyer said. “It’s the only reason why we do it; well, why I do it anyway.” Mininger said he doesn’t think the average young person has an opportunity to become exposed to personal or general aviation in their daily lives, and that’s why he dedicates so much of his time to Young Eagles. “A lot of us got our start or got interested in aviation because of some experience when we were younger with a family member or a friend who flew, and that’s what sort of opened our eyes and made us realize that this was a possibility,” Mininger said.

*Purchase tickets at the EAA AirVenture Museum® or at ticket booths located in the EAA Welcome Center, the Brown Arch, Vintage areas, the Ford tent, and the EAA AirVenture Museum during EAA® AirVenture® Oshkosh™, July 25-31, 2016. nly two Bell P-39 Airacobra fighters remain airworthy in the world and one is at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2016. Bill Fier of the Central Texas Wing of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) flew it here. The P-39 stands out instantly on the Warbirds ramp as the only World War II fighter here on tricycle landing gear. With its engine behind the pilot, the nose compartment was free to house the nose wheel plus armament including a big 37-mm cannon. The smoothly sculpted airframe of the P-39 includes minimalist air inlets for oil cooling and the radiator. P-39 pilots going back to the war years were told to nose the fighter into the wind on the ground if takeoff could not be expedited. “That’s never sufficient,” Fier said.

When the CAF had this P-39 in for maintenance, it installed a state-of-the-art radiator with enhanced cooling capability. And that nose compartment now conceals a non-standard 25-gallon cooling tank that feeds a spray bar to augment ground cooling for this ’Cobra, he said. Fier, a former U.S. Air Force B-1 and B-52 pilot, is one of three CAF pilots qualified in the P-39. “We had to go through two checkrides in the back of a T-6,” he said, before being signed off for the single-seat P-39. Takeoff in the Airacobra includes ever-increasing applications of power as the control surfaces gain authority from the accelerating slipstream. “Feed the power as you have rudder to control it,” he explained. The CAF is on the lookout for P-39 parts to keep this warbird flying, he said.

CESSNA DENALI DEBUTS AT AIRVENTURE A year after announcing its intent to produce a single-engine turboprop aircraft, Textron Aviation (booths 78-82, 100123), home to the Beechcraft, Cessna, and Hawker brands, announced the Cessna Denali at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2016. The clean-sheet design is engineered to achieve cruise speeds of 285 knots and a full fuel payload of 1,100 pounds. It will have a range of 1,600 nm at high-speed cruise with one pilot and four passengers. Power will come from GE’s new advanced turboprop engine. The FADEC-equipped, 1,240-shp-rated turboprop engine is expected to ease pilot workload with single-lever power and propeller control. A McCauley 105-inch diameter composite, five-blade, full-feathering, constant-speed propeller will round out the propulsion package. A mock-up of the craft’s interior can be seen at Textron’s booth in the Main Aircraft Display area. Cessna.txtav.com/turboprop/denali YINGLING ENHANCES ASCEND 172 After unveiling the comprehensively remanufactured Ascend 172 single-engine aircraft at AirVenture 2015, Wichitabased Yingling Aviation has improved the model by outfitting it with 180-hp power, a fully overhauled Sensenich propeller, Garmin G500 EFIS, and a Garmin GTX 345 ADS-B “out” and “in.” A new tri-color paint scheme rounds out the package. Yingling was Cessna’s first dealer and is uniquely qualified to restore previously used Cessna airframes to an essentially brand new configuration. In addition to the avionics and power upgrades the package includes a second GNC 255 nav/comm, a GMA 350 audio panel with marker beacon, a Davtron M800 digital clock, flight instrument backlighting,

a USB port, LED nav lights, an LED beacon light, Rosen sun visors, and wheel fairings. The new model can be seen at Garmin’s booth (322-328, 339-345). www.Yinglingaviation.com/ department/ascend-172 FACTORY-ASSISTED BUILD WILL BE OPTION FOR MURPHY RADICAL Murphy Aircraft, a Canadian builder of utility aircraft kits, unveiled its newest design at AirVenture 2016: the Radical. The craft will accept engines ranging from 130 to 220 hp, and it’s expected to have a useful load of 950 pounds. A unique feature of the craft is bicycle racks, allowing a bike to be carried under each wing. Test flights are expected to begin yet this year, with aircraft becoming available in 2017. The plane will be available as a kit, a 49-percent quickbuild kit, and a factory-assisted build. The factory-assist program is the first time Murphy has offered the option. Murphy has the Radical on display at Booth 652. 03e2159.netsolhost.com DAHER INTROS LAV-EQUIPPED TBM Daher (Booth 387-392) introduced its Elite Privacy configuration, adding an integrated lavatory to the company’s TBM 900/930 single-engine turboprops, available beginning with its 2017 models. The result of a yearslong development project, according to the French company, the lav serves as a bench-type seat with a low divider wall when not in use, and converts to a fully private toilet compartment at the touch of a button. Two electric motors drive a deployable multi-segment partition with an anti-lock door, and the enclosure includes a large courtesy mirror. The option adds just 90 pounds to the aircraft’s empty weight. The option will be “appreciated by pilot/owners who use the TBM’s long-range capabilities,” as well as charter operators, said Nicolas Chabbert, senior vice president, Daher Airplane Business Unit. www.TBM.aero RANS UNVEILS S-21 OUTBOUND RANS Designs (Booth 620-621) introduced its in-development S-21 Outbound, a “fast cruising” STOL aircraft. Powered by a 180-hp Titan 340 engine (other engine options will also be available), the two-place, all-metal high-wing has a cruise speed of 155 mph at 75 percent power. It features side-by-side seating, wide cabin doors, big windows, and a skylight, along with a 23-cubic-foot cargo space that can carry 200 pounds. The metal parts are powder coated, requiring no paint, and the pre-welded steel tubing cage accelerates the build process. The kit isn’t yet available, but RANS is showcasing parts of the aircraft here. A full list of options will be posted as developed and may include, based on customer demand, Rotax engine options, enabling it to be certified as an S-LSA. RANS.com NEW IGNITION SYSTEM FROM ELECTROAIR Electronic ignition system (EIS) manufacturer Electroair (Booth 3174) announced its RC4000 series hybrid magneto, designed to replace fourcylinder Bendix dual magnetos in Lycoming engines. The hybrid magneto uses engine rotation to charge a coilnear plug ignition system, delivering a high-energy spark to the spark plugs, while an ignition-timing adjustment mechanism adds an additional 6 amps of power output. The EIS eliminates common failure items found in traditional magnetos including the impulse

coupler and points. Certification is expected in about a year, and a magneto for six-cylinder engines is expected to follow. The company plans to develop similar magnetos for Continental engines, according to Electroair president Michael Kobylik. The company has also received EASA certification for its EIS-41000 series four-cylinder ignition systems. Kits shipped to European customers will contain all appropriate airworthiness documents for approved installations. Electroair.net PORTABLE SOLAR POWER FROM WICKS Wicks Aircraft & Motorsports (Booth 2057-2059) is showcasing its Solar X-Press, a portable, 400watt solar power generator. The panels, weighing only 4 pounds, are automatically controlled by an MPPT charge controller, a waterproof computer that maximizes energy output. The unit has both a solar panel gauge that displays how much power is being generated and is stored, and a battery meter indicating battery charge level. The inverter that comes with the unit provides access to 1,500 watts of AC power, enough to power a campsite or operate small lawn maintenance tools, and also features a remote switch and a 2-amp USB charger port for charging smartphones or tablets. WicksAircraft.com SOCIALFLIGHT APP GROWS WITH COMMUNITIES SocialFlight, an internet resource for finding aviation events and interesting places to fly, has added community forums to SocialFlight.com and the SocialFlight mobile app. Experts from companies like Jeppesen, Piper, Lightspeed, Bose, CamGuard, Aspen, and FreeFlight will participate in the forums to answer questions about technology, training, products, and more. SocialFlight is free to use and includes an interactive map listing more than 20,000 aviation events, rated destinations, aerial tours, local points of interest, and more. Swag Hunting Finding the Best Trinkets and Memorabilia

Aviall Named Master Distributor

BY ABBY OLENICZAK Guest-Youth Columnist

for Continental Motors, Inc.

S

ome kids at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2016 want to explore and collect all the fun trinkets the air show and convention has to offer. My siblings and I have been collecting this week and have some recommendations. Top on the list of places to visit are the Federal Pavilion, the Exhibit hangars, and the Education and Career Center in Aviation Gateway Park, which is also a great place for older kids to pick up information and learn about colleges.

The awesome items we collected included pins and

buttons,

stickers,

bracelets, hand sanitizer, water bottles, sunscreen, lip balm, key chains, airplane and shuttle pens, and flashlights. Don’t forget to be polite when asking for swag. That includes saying please and thank you. Or you can start by asking questions about the business or college. A few of the awesome items we collected included pins and buttons, stickers, bracelets, hand sanitizer, water bottles, sunscreen, lip balm, key chains, airplane and shuttle pens, and flashlights. Posters are also fun wall art and at AirVenture you can get a whole collection signed by famous pilots. The KidVenture area at Pioneer Airport also offers great swag, and educational fun activities. Another activity is the Passport program, in which kids complete to

win a prize. Pick up your Passport at the EAA Discovery Center. You can also take part in a scavenger hunt. Download the Social Flight app, pick up a form at the Continental Motors or Jeppesen buildings, and collect at least six gold stickers to redeem for a T-shirt. Have you ever flown a drone or wished you could? Check out the Drone Center in Aviation Gateway Park, and from 3-5 p.m. you can compete there for prizes. Editor’s note: Abby Oleniczak, 13, of Wheaton, Illinois, is an EAA member and hopes to be a professional columnist someday. With free admission offered to all scouts today, we hope her recommendations serve as a starting place for our younger visitors.

Aviall is proud to partner with Continental Motors Inc. In April 2016, Aviall became Continental’s domestic and international* Master Distributor for gasoline engine spare parts in the aftermarket. WITHOUT GENUINE LYCOMING PARTS, IS IT EVEN A LYCOMING ENGINE? CHOOSE INNOVATION, NOT IMITATION. That’s a question we ask ourselves here in the shop, where we’ve been making genuine Lycoming factory parts for piston engines since 1929. We engineer our parts for a precise fit, with exceptional wear characteristics that extend their life and time to TBO. It’s our commitment to innovation that gives Lycoming parts—and, thus, Lycoming engines—their reputation for durability. Because an engine is the sum of its parts, and genuine Lycoming parts make all the difference.
