“Whenever I go in the garden or an outdoor space I draw, and that feeds into my work.”
As a child one of Andrea’s earliest memories is of being in her neighbour’s vegetable patch, shoulder high in huge rhubarb plants and gooseberry bushes. ‘I loved it there, playing in the mud between leafy plants and neat, ordered rows of seedlings. That sense of happiness and inspiration I get when being in a garden has remained throughout my life. I remember doing handstands when I was seven on the front lawn next to my mother’s hydrangea shrubs. They were covered with huge bushy blue balls of flowers. There was a beautiful dark red peony bush outside the lounge window and our garden was divided from our neighbours by a little wood of silver birch trees that grew out of a peppermint patch’. I spent two weeks on an allotment as a student making large charcoal drawings of huge green cabbages. For another college reportage project, I chose to draw my landlady’s Victorian terraced garden. I now have my own garden to inspire me, and often my children will bring their sketchbooks, and draw with me’.
Andrea’s paintings are a mixture of coastal scenes, invented landscapes and varied forms of still life with favourite flowers. Images start from sketchbook studies made in or around a house or garden, and from past holidays in Cornwall, Ireland and Scotland. A recurring theme in her still life work is the painted vessel motif set within a landscape. Still life work is painted with emphasised simplicity. Some parts of the painting have become abstracted, being described only by colour, texture or pattern. Sketchbook drawings are often transferred directly onto a painting of a vessel. Andrea uses a limited colour palette and limited tonal range. White is added to humanise and soften colour. She often uses white on white, pencil on white, and gesso on gesso. ELCOME to the second month of Words over
Waltham Forest. Artillery who are behind the E17 Art Trail have worked in conjunction with local libraries to attract a stella cast of writers and poets to the borough, including on the 2 November the Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy. Locally based comedian and wordsmith, Rob Auton will be appearing at the Rose and Crown on the 13th, fresh from winning the Dave Best Joke at the Edinburgh Festival. There are also numerous art exhibitions around town celebrating the power of words and language. Two stand outs for me are ‘Words on the Street’ at the Pictorem Gallery on Hoe Street, and ‘Use Words not Fists’ featuring the work of last month’s E List cover star, Two Pipe Problem at the E17 Art House on Church Hill. Both shows run until 16 November. Two Pipe also created the poster artwork for the festival itself (page 3). Last month I finally got to attend a performance at the theatre above the Rose and Crown. To be honest it had taken me a while to go, because to put it mildly I am not the biggest fan of musical theatre, in fact I would rather listen to two hours of car alarms than watch people singing a little too carefully things they could easily speak. I fear I am from a generation damaged by the works of Andrew Lloyd Webber. But All Star Productions’ (featured in August’s E List) Days of Hope was set during the Spanish Civil War so I prayed that a dose of hefty politics and historical passions would compensate for any sentimental balladry. So with my copy of George Orwell’s Homage to Catalonia in hand, I bit the bullet and went along with a friend. You can probably guess what I’m going to say now, and I’m not just saying it, the musical could have been about Damascus, because I saw the light. The performances were passionate, the acting excellent and the vocally challenging set pieces flawlessly sung throughout. The theatre was set up so there was no stage, the actors performed in the middle of the room with us the audience sitting round. This means there’s no detachment, you almost feel like you’re part of the unfolding story, well you do if you sit in the front row anyway. The musical written by Howard Goodall, who bizarrely also wrote the Blackadder theme tune, was funny, thoughtful and resonant and had my neighbours in tears by the end. So that’s me converted then. Thanks to Andy and everyone at All Star for making such a memorable and first class night. Finally thanks to Auntie Maureen for her excellent interview with Flossie for this month’s Local Hero. We are blessed with a diverse choice of pubs in E17 these days but Flossie and her husband Roger were the first to stick their necks out and try and do something different.

There was a buzz in the air in the run-up to the first meeting of the Stow Roses – the WI in Walthamstow, but the turnout exceeded all expectations. Rob Oliver the landlord at the Warrant Officer in Higham Hill had no choice but to give the whole pub over to this gathering of over 200 local women. As women signed up to join the Stow Roses, ideas for future events came thick and fast – from butchery to vintage hairstyling, local history to entrepreneurial skills and of course jam making and baking. In which architectural historian, Karen Averby uncovers curiosities and stories from Walthamstow’s rich and varied past.
A Tale of Two Town Halls Back in the later nineteenth century, when Walthamstow was still in its relative urban infancy, there was no town hall. Official matters were conducted by a local Board, who met in the Vestry House (now the Vestry House Museum, Vestry Road). In 1876, a public hall on Orford Road which had been built ten years earlier was bought and enlarged to form a new ornate Italianate style town hall, a favoured architectural style of the period.

Apparently (so the story goes) Walthamstow was being visited by a notable dignitary… but there was nowhere suitable in which to formally greet him and conduct business, and so the new town hall was put up in haste. So hastily, in fact, that the new structure was built in front of the old, leaving little room for a grand staircase, as would often befit a civic building of this period. The cast iron staircase that still exists today was, therefore, not built to a suitably grand scale,
and although still impressive, was not quite fit for purpose. Another wing was added to the building in 1890–1 and council business was conducted here until 1941, when a new town hall was opened on Forest Road. The old town hall building was used as offices by the Ministry of Food, then formed part of the Connaught Hospital 1959-1977, before being used by Waltham Forest College until 1986. In 1994 the rear was converted into flats set around a central courtyard, although the impressive frontage remains. Unlike its predecessor, the new town hall on Forest Road took several years to build. Planned as an impressive civic centre, its features include nineteen bays, three storeys, a clock tower and fountain, plus a layout and iron balconies showing a Swedish inter-war influence. An assembly hall to the east was completed to the original design in 1943, although the court house opposite, completed in 1971, rather upsets the plan.

The assembly halls’ fantastic acoustics makes it an excellent concert venue, and has attracted record labels including Decca and RCA to use it for recordings. Both town halls have their own style and character, forming part of Walthamstow’s rich and varied architectural heritage. Both are Grade II listed, and deservedly so. www.archangelheritage.co.uk

And you are? I am Flossie, landlady of the Nag’s Head. I was born but escaped from Romford, Essex when I was 18. I have lived in Walthamstow for 31 years. I had a stall on Camden Market for ten years. I started off selling 50’s bric-a-brac but then I started to make clothes from old 1950’s curtains and sell them. Then I learned how to screen print and started designing and printing my own t-shirts which went really, really well. That was 1982 to 1992. I sold to Nigel Kennedy, Alice Cooper’s girlfriend, Dave Stewart and 20 t-shirts to Bob Dylan who asked for discount. I managed to poke one of his minders in the eye with a display pole. So what is the Nag’s Head history? Francis Rag, who owned a stage coach company taking rich merchants from their country houses here back to their city houses, well he already had the original Nag’s Head on the corner (the wild flower meadow opposite the Ancient House). He then bought this plot of land and opened this as a coaching inn in 1857, I believe called the New Nag’s Head at first. The old Nag’s Head got pulled down but supposedly the cellar is still there underneath. What is your history with the Nag’s Head? Having run my own businesses and worked in pubs since I was 24, I could see 12 years ago new people coming into the area and there was nowhere for them to go at the time. So I thought I must do something. I found the Nag’s Head with one old man sitting at the bar and the garden padlocked. Thought: what a beautiful place. Approached the owners who lived in South London who knew nothing of the area and they said: make us an offer, take it off our hands. I wanted a pub for people over 34, I wanted a woman friendly pub, I wanted to play good music because that is where my heart and soul is. We opened our doors in June 2001 and the people flooded in. So the Nag’s is famous for its cats. How many official and unofficial felines do you have? Billy Girl is official, she’s married to Harvey Cat who lives over the back, so he is unofficial I suppose. And there’s Herman 12
the German who we’ve only had about 3 months so he is slightly official I suppose. Who is Madame LaZonga? My dad used to call his cat Mme Lazonga. Just before I got the pub I found a CD in a car boot sale called Serenading The Night, full of 1930’s and 40’s Latin inspired songs from musicals and on there was the song “6 Lessons From Mme Lazonga” and I found that it was from a film called Mme Lazonga, who was played by an actress called Lupe Velez aka the Mexican Spitfire because she used to go to parties with no knickers on and throw her dress over her head, that was her party trick. Sadly she got pregnant when she was 36 by a married man and committed suicide through the shame so I’d like to think that this upstairs bar is a little tribute to Lupe Velez. How do you put your love for music in the pub? We do Spin-A-Disc every other Monday night. As I was getting the pub I went to a friend’s 40th. She got out her old mono record player and her old records. Some were old ska etcetera which I was into, and we had such a good laugh that I thought to myself: wouldn’t this be a good idea for the pub, for people to bring their own beloved records that they can’t play anymore ‘cause they ain’t got record players. And that’s how Spin-A-Disc started. People bring a variety of stuff ranging from Maori Girls’ Voice Choir, 1930’s gospel which sounded so modern
like it was written yesterday to Radar Love by Golden Earring which you will often find me and Auntie Maureen head banging to. Tell us something really unknown about the pub, a secret or a rumour or a fact. A few people used to tell us there was a tunnel underneath the Nag’s Head, maybe leading to the Church, maybe not. I thought it was a load of old tosh until we realised that at the bottom of our cellar stairs is a large gap. If we roll barrels down you can hear it is hollow and if you poke something down it, it goes on, it wont find the end of it. And then one day our cleaner’s son was putting up a fence in the next door garden and he was drilling with his Kanger and he fell through a big hole so we don’t know if that’s all connected. Any unfulfilled ambitions for the pub? I think sometimes about having a cocktail bar upstairs in Madama LaZonga’s. Know a good cocktail barman? Favourite place to eat locally? Cosy Cafe on Eastern Road. It only does breakfasts and nursery food like tinned spaghetti. It closes at 1 o’clock. What will you do when you retire? I plan to walk ‘round every street of London with my friend Linda with our old dogs in push chairs. And when we’ve done every street of London we’ll do it all over again providing our legs hold out.

Walthamstow Diary Between forest and marsh lies the glorious Stow. These are the tales and meanderings of a proud resident of E17 We got up on Sunday 6th October and the sun was beaming, you would have been forgiven for thinking it was a midsummer day. Wanting to make the most of the nice weather we scrambled into action and started to make plans. An hour later our friend was installed in the back garden and we were gossiping over a cup of tea. When we had caught up we consulted our E List to see what was happening in Walthamstow that day and decided to head to the village for the E17 Designers’ Market. We were a little early so had another tea in the deli on Orford Road before going for a wander around Penny Fielding’s shop. We purchased essential items including two candle holders and a big windmill for our friends’ daughter, and then sat in the sun outside the Nag’s Head before wandering to the market at the Asian Centre. The Designers’ Market is always packed to the rafters with local designers, crafters and makers. If you have never been it is worth paying one of the upcoming markets a visit. You can get your hands on all sorts of goodies including jewellery, ceramics and art work. We bought a beautiful glass bowl from local glass and ceramics designer/maker Steven Smith. We intended to give it to a friend as a house warming gift but failed to hand it over as we liked it too much. My other half fell in love with a beautiful floor lamp made by Felled Light. This particular designer makes all of his lighting out of sections of tree trunk and branches then finishes them off with glass or metal shades. Sadly it wasn’t to be, someone else beat us to the floor lamp, so we consoled ourselves with yet more tea and wandered around the rest of the market.

Spotted Walthamstow Wish you’d said something at the time but now it’s too late?? Message thanks, rants and questions to the Spotted Walthamstow Facebook page and we’ll repost. 100% anonymous. Here are some edited highlights from the past few weeks.

‘It’s looking like Waltham Forest’s plans to regenerate Walthamstow Central will mean the end of the Madre Tierra coffee hut. Not only does Alex supply THE best coffee and friendly early morning chats in E17, but his cheery hut filled with wildlife sculptures is also a hub for local community notices, book sharing and a collection point for Eat or Heat. E17 will be a poorer place without it. What can we do?’ Heidi: That is rubbish. Can we find him another place to set up? Anna: Gods Own Junk Yard, now the coffee man and his zoo.... this makes me very sad. Sarah: All this “developing” is going to drive out what makes Walthamstow unique and special. It will just end up another faceless boring town. Andy: That’s gentrification for you; the little man always gets shafted! Can we blame the bugaboo pushing, converse wearing, ex Hackney residents for this?? Christopher: Both the footwear and the pushchair had been seen in Walthamstow before the current influx!), but I do get your point about gentrification having negative effects on small businesses. It wouldn’t bother me so much if this gentrification closed down some of the chicken, cheap tatty pound shops and dodgy off licenses. Michelle: Our council should be trying to preserve the things that make Walthamstow awesome. But that seems too much to expect. The words “venal” and “philistine” spring to mind, I’m afraid. Very depressing. Spotted Walthamstow: Watch ‘Little Zoo’ on YouTube to find out more about the coffee man. 25 75 ‘I saw a white and brown bunny hopping down Hoe Street yesterday. Is this an escaped pet, or the familiar of the infamous Bunnyman of Walthamstow? It was outside the chicken shop down from The Goose...’ Denice: Poor thing Sarah: Has Bunnyman got dreads? There was someone in the chicken shop, maybe he was
the owner. The bunny was very unperturbed to be outside on his own, though I couldn’t say the same for the two men next to him saying “There is a rabbit here! Whose rabbit is this? IS this your rabbit?” to passers by!! Bridie: My mum asked him if we could stroke his rabbit, he said ‘it’s not my rabbit, it’s everyone’s rabbit. Lol. Oliver: I met a guy on the 212 with a rabbit and he played me a song on a bongo. Denice: I saw bunny man on the 212 minus bunny, but sporting a red flower in his hair. At least he dares to be different. Ally: I saw the bunny on the 212. It was very peculiar - I’d just been to a magic show! 75 70 ‘Thank you to the mum and her three small children outside Highams Hill library for making me smile yesterday as I drove past. It was raining. The tiniest two headed towards a huge puddle and jumped in. The older one joined in. Then the mum jumped in too. Very sweet.’ Joe: I wonder if LBWTF have done a health and safety assessment 1 97 ‘After months of renovations, the Edward Road old off-license is revealed! garden. It made me smirk anyway. Heidi: Apparently the hot summer has caused an explosion all over Britain. Joe: We don’t allow spiders into the Village. We get the occasional outbreak of unicorns, which can be a nuisance. 25 44 ‘Walthamstow house prices. Why does a 1-bed flat in Lloyd Park cost as much as a 2-bed house 5 mins away? Why does a 3-bed house in The Village cost double a bigger house 10 mins away? Help me understand.’ Ross: Supply and demand. Annette: That’s why I moved, too expensive. Marie: E17 is extremely overpriced. The house next to us is a tiny 2 bed and has just been put on the market for 525k. Outskirts of the village but still! Susanne: Thank god! Means I could actually afford a lovely house for my family in an area with real London character. Let the hipsters fight over Lloyds Park and the Village. I love my secret spot in Walthamstow. Curtis: I’ve just bought in E17, as far as I’m concerned it can keep rising. Higham Hill could be the next village. If you do have a house in E17 you shouldn’t moan about the hipsters coming in, they are making your house value rise. (I am a ‘hipster’). Christopher: Good for people who own homes they can sell. Not so good for people who rent, even if they could “afford” the mortgage the £30-£40k deposit is impossible. Curtis: Gentrification is progress, but I agree that progress does not always suit everybody. Debbie: A lot of people love E17 because it’s not like Stoke Newington... ? Isabelle: The snobbery here is ridiculous, at the end of the day it’s all Walthamstow, a lovely place to live. I for one am really proud other people want to live here too. Yes it drives up house prices (I don’t own) but hey, that’s life. 84 46 15
