THE SECRET LIFE OF

WALTER

MITT Y I don’t know if any of you have ever experienced this, but when you do let me tell you, it is one of the most wonderful feelings in all the world. I felt it when I walked out of the cinema after seeing ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’. I’m talking about a sense of enlightenment, curiosity and wanderlust so strong that it made me question what exactly I was doing with my life. At the beginning of the film I felt like I really identified with Walter, a middle aged employee at Life Magazine handling the photo negatives needed for their covers. He seems to spend his life day

dreaming or ‘zoning out’ as his family call it. In fact, I was sitting in the cinema watching Walter’s awkward social interaction and painful desire to be something more thinking ‘Yep. That’s me. If I was to be any character in a film, I would be Walter Mitty’. This thought, however, quickly disappeared as he takes matters into his own hands and lives out his vivid daydreams in real life, conquering mountains and embarking on spontaneous quests to find the man (Sean Penn) and the photo that his job relies on before it’s too late. Admittedly, when I saw the trailer for the first

time I was seriously underwhelmed. It seemed to be a film made up of a series of cutesy moments and not much else, and After seeing ‘Greenberg’ a few years ago, going to see anything that stars Ben Stiller seemed highly unappealing. However, Stiller’s performance was stunning in portraying Walter and capturing the imagination of the audience, especially turning me into a bit of a Ben Stiller fan. The fact that he also directed the film earns him even more respect as the cinematography, especially in the opening sequence, was beautiful. With arial shots capturing the busy

13

life of New York City, and the picturesque landscapes of Greenland, Iceland and Afghanistan. As well as the movie being entirely beautiful and heart warming, you get your fair share of laughs whether it be from the drunk pilot in Greenland, the idiot new boss or just Stiller’s occasional one liners. However, probably the most hilarious moment for me is the constant phone calls

from, and followed up by the eventual appearance of, ‘Todd at eharmony’ who becomes an unlikely comic relief character in the sometimes heavy plot. The comically camp character, played by Patton Oswalt, was probably my favourite in the grand scheme of things for his eternal respect for a guy he’d just met, and his eternal love for 880 calorie cinnamon rolls. But the most amazing thing

was not Ben Stiller or the scenery or the chubby man who loved fattening pastries... It was how at the start of the film someone mentioned they were a graphic designer for Life and I thought ‘WOW That is the coolest thing ever!’ and by the end, I was watching Walter Mitty’s miniture adventures and wishing that it was my life instead.

14

Now, I know that I’m a teenager, but when it comes to animated films I turn into such a child again! I love most animated films (Dream Works, Disney, Pixar; the lot!) but in the past years I have found that the newer films were never as good as the old classics. That is until earlier this year when Eilidh and I saw Wreck It Ralph. Having had this prejudice over newer animated films, I have to say that I didn’t really have any high expectations, but I was blown away. Hilarious, heart-warming and only the tiniest bit cheesy (that kind that makes you go ‘aw’ instead of cringe), it really is the perfect family film, and has restored my faith in modern-day Disney. BY MADDY REID

15

THE IMPOSSIBLE

The first film that I saw in 2013 was The Impossible. After Noticing it starred Ewan McGregor I thought it might be good, despite originally not wanting to see it. I mean, who wants to see a film about a huge natural disaster that caused the deaths of thousands of lives? Of all of the horrible natural disasters that occur every year, the tsunami that hit Thailand as well as many other countries in 2004 is one of the most memorable horrors to date. I was, however, pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Instead of being a story about destruction and devastation, this thrilling tale shows how a family manage to stay alive and, against all odds, find each other again. BY MADDY REID

THE HUNGER GAMES:

CATCHING FIRE BOOK The much anticipated sequel to the cult classic ‘The Hunger Games’ film, Catching Fire, was released in the latter part of 2013. There was much hype around the film after a sudden change in director to Francis Lawrence, and the film definitely did not disappoint. The motto of the Catching Fire book is ‘Sparks are igniting. Flames are spreading. And the Capitol wants revenge.’ This gives you a pretty good insight into what the main theme of the book is going to be. It continues on from the end of the first, starting with Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark preparing for the Victory Tour, where they have to visit every district in Panem before finishing the tour in the Capitol where they are invited to several lavish parties and introduced to important people. However, District 12 is not the same place that Katniss and Peeta left before the games. With new Peacekeepers in place to keep the restless people at bay and a chilling visit from President Snow, Katniss realises that

vs

FILM

there is a change in the people of Panem and that every district has been united by the new idea of hope. She also realises, however, that this has not gone unnoticed by the Capitol who have also felt the shift in attitude. The Mockingjay, the emblem that Katniss associates herself with, has become the symbol of the rebellion and so has she. Francis Lawrence has given the film a breath of fresh air; Catching Fire does not feel like a sequel but instead could be a standalone film. The Catching Fire film is a perfect adaptation of the book, and while it might not portray everything word-for-word, it has absorbed the main feelings from the book and represents them Without Fault. The relationship between Katniss and Peeta is almost perfectly portrayed. Josh Hutcherson does a pristine job of capturing Peeta’s love for Katniss in a way that is still subtle and shy. His conversation with her on the train during the Victory tour is agonising, and yet there is something beautiful about it as

well. Peeta helps rebuild Katniss as she overcomes her PTSD from the games, whilst also dealing with it himself. With Josh I find that it is all about the subtleties, and I can find myself tearing up just from the look in his eye or the burning passion in his voice as Peeta reassures Katniss. He has definitely grown so much as an actor from the first film, and it is a pleasure watching him on screen recreate the romance that I enjoyed reading about so much. However, it was Jennifer Lawrence that I felt slightly let down by in places. Her portrayal of Katniss, while good, felt no different from the first film and I did not feel the emotional change in her that I so strongly took to in the book. I really enjoyed reading about a different side of Katniss, a broken and confused child, and did not feel the same as I watched her on the screen. The rare glimpses of this that I did see, however, were absolutely stunning, and I hope that she manages to capture more of this as the films continue and Katniss’ story progresses.

19

There were a few moments in the book that I really really loved and was sad that they did not make it into the film or were changed; I was really sad that they missed out Bonny and Twill, two runaways from District 8, as they foreshadowed District 13. I was also slightly annoyed that they added an extra Gale/Katniss kiss. While I might be slightly biased

as I am a firm Katniss/ Peeta ‘shipper’, I liked in the book that both of the kisses between Katniss and Gale were slightly confusing so you were unsure of Katniss’ real feelings, which she was also unsure about herself. Their first kiss in the book is when Gale kisses Katniss, afterwards saying “I had to do that. At least once,” and their second kiss

being when Katniss kisses Gale while she thinks he’s unconscious after being whipped by the new Head Peacekeeper for District 12. Both of these kisses take place in the film, but they also add another kiss when Katniss kisses Gale in a field when she talks to him about running away. This kiss seems slightly random and pointless, and also clarifies to watchers

20

of the film that Katniss definitely has feelings for Gale, something she is not sure of and never fully clarifies in the book. Saying all that though, watching the film is a whole different experience from reading the book. The one thing that Suzanne Collins lacks is description; something I am always wishing for as it is hard to imagine the extravagant parties at the Capitol or the thick jungle in the Quarter Quell. Everything in the film seems so real,

it is hard to imagine that it’s not, and none more so than the events in the Quarter Quell. The arena is set out like a clock, with a new horror arriving in each section every hour. There are screaming birds, also known as ‘Jabberjays’, that mimic the screams of your loved ones, terrifying man-eating monkeys, and a fog that burns your skin and creates large, puss-filled boils. All of these awful scenes were so hideous but also amazing to watch as they seemed so

incredibly life-like. Team that together with some beautiful acting moments from Sam Claflin and Jena Malone and you have yourself something very special. Overall I was very, very pleased with The Hunger Games: Catching Fire as it was a great adaptation of an already wonderful book, and now with Francis Lawrence on board I am looking forward very much to the first half of last book, Mockingjay Part One, in 2014.

MADDY’S FAVOURITES

I always tend to read a lot of books over summer, but this year instead of reading individual books, I really got into series and ended up reading certain books in a matter of hours to see how the story would progress for my favourite characters (and their love interests).

PRETTY LITTLE LIARS

I am a massive fan of the TV series Pretty Little Liars so my friend gave me the first book as a birthday present in July. I knew that they had changed the story from the books in the series so I was slightly unsure on whether or not I would really enjoy it, but it was actually very good. For those who have haven’t seen the series, it follows Emily. Hanna, Spencer and Aria as they deal with a stalker who calls themselves ‘A’, tries to kill them, and knows numerous secrets about them that only their friend Alison knew who has been dead for two years. It may sound lame, but it’s very gripping. The first novel is exactly the same as the pilot episode of the series. I love the book as it is actually from A’s perspective and so you have a better understanding of what A is doing. There are 14 books in the series (not including spin-off books) and there will be 16 in total.

THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS

The Mortal Instruments series has had a lot of hype around it as the first book, City of Bones, was made into a film and came out in August this year so over summer I read the first four books of the series. More for Twilight readers than someone into serious fiction novels, this fantasy series still has a good range of characters, exciting plot and, as always, a great love triangle. The sixth and final book will be released this year, and so will the second film.

SLATED

I was given Slated free from a book stall back in August, and as it was free I didn't think it would be very good. I was however very surprised to find myself caught up in the story of Kyla, a young girl who has had her mind wiped and been 'slated' by the Government as she was a terrorist in her past life, or so she was told. I am now reading Fractured, the second book in the series which came out this year and I am hoping that there will be more books in the future.

Instagram has been one of the most used apps of 2013, with 55 million photos posted and shared every day. Social Print Studio, a small company in LA, noticed the hype

around the app and created a way to connect people to their online pictures by printing Instagram and Facebook photographs. I had a quick chat with Taymoor, Catherine and Tim

from SPS and asked them a few questions about their business as well as what apps they have been using in 2013.

WHERE DID THE IDEA FOR SOCIAL PRINT STUDO COME FROM?

stared, printing FaceBook friend posters. Blue prints will hopefully be our triumphal return to the Facebook printing world!

SPS came from a group of people that wanted to build something together, the company is a combination of our dreams, hallucinations, interests and any other piece of ourselves that want to come along for the party.

HOW DO YOU COME UP WITH NEW PRODUCT IDEAS AND DO YOU HAVE ANY YOU CAN TELL US ABOUT? We listen to what customers ask for again and again.. and then we sell them back to them.

We are constantly passing new product ideas between each other, when one we really like finally takes hold, we will move on to bringing this product into the physical realm.

We listen to our hearts and customers! If we think it’s cool we ask around the office and with customers to see if everyone concurs. We have photo books coming out soon!

I’m super-excited about the TinyBook necklace charms we’re working on. Basically you can wear a Tinybook full of photos around your neck. It’s like a locket except there are 24 photos in it, not just one or two! YOU RECENTLY LAUNCHED BLUE PRINTS THAT ALLOWS YOU TO PRINT FACEBOOK PHOTOS. WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE A SOCIAL MEDIA SITE THAT ISN’T BRAND NEW? We picked Facebook because that is where SPS originally

Because 200,000 photos are uploaded to Facebook every day and there is currently no site specifically keyed to printing Facebook photos.

“WE LISTEN TO OUR HEARTS AND OUR CUSTOMERS”

WHAT WEBSITES/APPS ARE YOU ALWAYS ON?

Instagram. Reddit. Netflix. Yelp.

I’m always on Instagram and Twitter because that is my job. Websites I visit every day: The Guardian, The Toast, McSweeney’s Internet Tendency,

and the New Yorker. The Daring Fireball, Joystiq, The Guardian, Facebook, Instagram, Github WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL HAPPEN WHEN SOCIAL MEDIA OVERTAKES OLD MEDIA? There won’t be any distinction anymore. All media will be social media. Phrases like “social media” and “new media” will become anachronisms that will age you horribly if you use them. It has already begun! Same thing that happened to laserdisc, something better will come along and replace it. I believe it will be such a natural transition to the next thing and the value is recognizing what it is and when it is upon us. (The next best thing could already be forming its roots, but its hard to say in our fast paced society). INSTAGRAM IS VERY NOW. WHAT DO FEEL WILL BE THE NEXT BIG THING? Technology is cyclical. I think that there will be a return to Friendster, AOL mail, and Bebo like how people are into vinyl records now. Grey hair toupees and utility fog. Printing from the spacestation...to the stars children of the earth!

BRITISH SEA POWER from the sea to the land beyond

For me, the stand out album of the year was Corsicana Lemonade by Texan, four-piece blues/rock band White Denim. Released in October of this year, I have barely listened to anything else. Perhaps it was because it I saw it performed live earlier this year but each song on the album feels like it’s own and earns the right to be there. Starting off strong with ‘At Night in Dreams’ the album only gets better reaching the

#1

pinnacle, for me, with ‘Let it Feel Good (My Eagles)’ and their single ‘Pretty Green’. The album is chock full of delicious guitar solos and catchy rock melodies to get your head moving and your feet tapping. Topped off with James and Stevens’ smooth and soulful vocals, the album beats all others for all round enjoyable listening. White Denim will be touring the USA from the 27th January and Europe from the 12th MAY 2014.

S P R I N G / S U M M E R URBAN OUTFITTERS

LOGOs MONEY MONEY MONEY You don’t have to spend a lot to be on trend in Spring/Summer 2014 with these cool new pieces of bling. Inspired by the SS14 Dolce and Gabanna show, there are plenty of coin inspired jewellery in high street chains such as Topshop and Primark.

ASHISH

DOLCE AND GABANNA

2014 TRENDS

One of the cooler, more urban trends this coming season is logos, especially logo tee-shirts. The louder the better, like this Alexander Wang with a mix of sweatshirt and see-through, or this Ashish that is covered in sequins and jewels. Or you can show your humorous side by having a play-on-words tee like this ‘Homies’ one from Urban Outfitters.

BURBERRY

MARKUS LUPFER

PREEN

A new year comes with a new season, and a whole lot of new fashion. This coming season has seen some beautiful collections from Burberry, Christopher Kane and Dolce and Gabanna, and has seen some new faces on

DIGITAL FLORALS There is always some trend including floral prints in Spring/Summer, but this season the traditional trend is getting a modern twist. The colourful and pretty prints are mixed with bold geometric shapes, as seen at Preen and Markus Lupfer. I love this shirt from River Island as it has blown up the image and edited the colour of the flower to make a much more interesting print.

FONDANT FANCIES My final and favourite trend this SS14 is fondant shades. I love pastels and think they look great on all skin tones and hair colours. Top of my wishlist for this year is this stunning coat from Zara, at ÂŁ129 it is a total steal compared to the jackets from the Burberry show that it is inspired by.

38

MADDY’S PICKS The Outfit for Everything We all have an outfit that we love so much that we try and wear it to just about everything, and this season mine has included these beauties from Zara. They are a hybrid between a trouser and a pair of leggings; being made out of neoprene so that they are super comfortable but also quite classy and very stylish. They are low rise and cropped at the ankle, with a slight side split near the bottom and have a lot of zip detail which keeps them interesting. I always think you have to balance things out, so I pair the super skinny trousers with a large baggy tee (H&M, £6.99). With a leather jacket and a pair of converse you can keep the look casual, or with a statement necklace (Topshop, £10) and a pair of heeled boots (Topshop, £50) you can wear this out from day to night!

39

40

Wrapping Up I have been wearing this outfit a lot on days when it has been quite chilly here (which is most days!) as layers are the best thing when keeping warm. The jeans are the Topshop Jamie Jeans and the fluffy black jumper is also from Topshop. I love the jumper as it is cropped so it looks great with dresses, skirts, or high waisted jeans like I have here. My leather jacket (Zara, ÂŁ39.99) and converse keep the outfit looking casual and my Edinburgh Woollen Mill tartan scarf adds a pop of colour.

41

The Christmas Party Or the Hogmanay party, or just any party really! This has been my number one party look this season. The dress, from Topshop (£15 in sale), is perfect for a party as it shows a bit of cleavage and a bit of back yet you still don’t feel as if you’re falling out of it. The shoes are from New Look (£12 in sale) and are super comfortable and don’t add too much height as I’m already a tall gal. Finally, it’s finished off with a sparkly necklace (£4, Superdrug) that helps keep it looking festive and fun!

42

43

44

BOURJOIS COLOUR BURST LIP CRAYON £7.99 2013 has seen a lot of lip products from Revlon, Rimmel and Maxfactor, but it was the Bourjois ones that came out on top for me. While not the longest lasting, the Colour Boost Lip Crayons have a great colour pay-off and a stunning glossy finish. The colours are all very wearable and fun for the daytime (especially in summer!) and they smell like sweeties!

+

2013’s TOP TEN UNDER.TEN

+

BARRY M GELLY HI-SHINE NAIL PAINT £3.99 These have been the nail polishes of 2013; their long, thin brushes, bright colours and super glossy finish has made them a winner all year round. My personal favourite colour of the lot has been Blue Grape, a classic cobalt blue colour.

MAYBELLINE BABY LIPS £2.99

+

I can’t talk about make-up this year without mentioning Baby Lips. Their moisturising formula, slightly coloured tint and sweet smell makes them one of my favourite products of the year.

45

+

MAYBELLINE 24 HOUR COLOUR TATTOO CREAM EYE SHADOW £4.99 The Colour Tattoos have been a cult product for years, especially in shades On and On Bronze and Permanent Taupe, but it was a bit of a surprise when Maybelline added some more colours to the range. Thankfully they do not disappoint, the winner of the new colours being Metallic Pomegranate, a shimmery deep pink/red, similar to MAC Cranberry eye shadow.

+

URBAN DECAY NAKED BASICS PALETTE £20 Okay, so this one isn’t actually £20, but I purchased it half with my Boots points, so only actually spending £10 (that counts, right?). Whether this counts or not, I really had to include it as it is such great value for money. The palette comes with 6 shades, 4 of which I use on an almost every day basis. It comes with 5 mattes and 1 shimmer, ranging from white to black. I use the first shade, a shimmery white called Venus, as an inner corner highlight, a mix between the two browns Naked 2 and Faint (which are dupes for Omega and Charcoal Brown by MAC) for my eyebrows every day and use the matte black Crave if I want a slightly softer eyeliner look or an intense smoky eye.

46

MARC JAOBS BEAUTY www.marcjacobs.com/beauty 2013 was host to two major make-up launches by some of the industry’s biggest names, starting with make-up newbie Marc Jacobs. I have to start off by saying that the Marc Jacobs line is huge, ranging from brushes to bases to polishes and everything in between! The packaging of every item is stunning, with curved edges and a mix of black plastic and glass bottles. Even for the (extortionate) prices, the packaging is still surprisingly lux. Despite the extensive range, there were three items that definitely came out on top immediately following the launch; The Enamoured Nail Glaze, a thick and long lasting gel formula nail polish, with the shades Lolita Bright Red and Desire Wine coming out tops this holiday season. The nail polishes are very large at 13ml, and so the $18 (£11 approx.) price tag can be justified here in the UK when many luxury nail polishes retail between £12 and £18, but in the US – where the range was launched – their

cosmetics prices are on average much lower so are considered very expensive. The Style Eye-Con Eye shadow palette in the shade The Lolita was also a winner, with 7 beautiful cool silvers, taupes and a pink to create both a simple everyday look and a striking smoky eye. However, the Genius Gel Supercharged Foundation was the winner from the collection, being compared to the cult Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk foundation. It’s thick, gel texture and large shade range has definitely made it popular among make-up lovers, but with the price tag of $48 (£29 approx.) it is on par with the prices of much more well-known cosmetic brands such as Dior, Chanel and YSL, and so for a new make-up line it definitely has a lot to live up to with its next few ranges before it can have the same high stature as the older make-up brands. Despite this, I really do think that Marc Jacobs Beauty has definitely delivered and is a great and exciting new brand.

47

CHARLOTTE TILBURY www.charlottetilbury.com Another launch this year that had everyone talking was the Charlotte Tilbury make-up collection. Charlotte Tilbury is arguably one of the most famous living make-up artists, having done the make-up of the likes of Kate Moss and Cara Delevingne for countless Vogue covers, to Fashion Week shows for the likes of Tom Ford, Michael Kors, Donna Karan, Rachel Zoe and Missoni. Charlotte has also created a very large range of products, from brushes to make-up and even a skincare range, including ‘Charlotte’s Magic Cream’, a £70 moisturiser she has perfected after years of working in the cosmetics industry. She has also used her immense knowledge to create a brand that she hoped that women felt confident in. She said that she was constantly being asked for advice and tips from friends and family so she has created 10 ‘looks’, ranging from The Sophisticate to The Rebel. The idea is that you can either pick the products that suit your style and skin tone, or select one of the looks that you like the most and either buy

what you would like from the look or buy the entire look in one £165 package (yikes!). Along with every look also comes a Youtube tutorial by Charlotte Tilbury (fun fact; the model she is using is Britain’s Next Top Model Winner Letitia Herod) that show you how to create every look minimally or really built up. There are lots of different looks, but my favourite look is Vintage Vamp; it looks great on really pale gals and consists of a perfect pink cheek, a dark damson lip and (my favourite) an eye shadow palette made up of a light, brightening white/grey, two cranberry shades and a sparkly gold/bronze. The products retail from £16 for a power eyeliner pencil to a face sculpting palette at £49, so the prices are similar again to Chanel and Dior, but with Charlotte’s knowledge and experience I think that women should not feel unsure about parting with their money. Her collection is a great new addition to the beauty counters of Selfridges where it is being sold, and I can’t wait to see what new ranges and looks will appear in 2014.

LEMON BAKED CHEESECAKE Ingredients: -225g digestive biscuits -100g butter, melted -250g creme fraiche -600g soft cheese -2 eggs -2 egg yolks -juice of 1 lemon -4 tbsp plain flour -175g caster sugar

Topping Ingredients: -Leftover creme fraiche -3 tbsp lemon curd

This recipe, based on one we found on BBC Good Food, is incredibly easy to make. Feeding about ten people, the cheesecake will take about 10 - 20 minutes preperation time and about an hour overall including cooking and cooling time. Each serving contains roughly 705 kcalories.

51

First of all, Heat the oven to 180c/Gas 4. While the oven is heating this gives you time to prepare. Line your tin with greaseproof paper and then you can get on to melting the butter. While the butter is melting crush the digestive biscuits for the base. Mix the biscuits

and the butter together, press into the tin and chill in the fridge. Voila, You have made the base! The rest just gets easier! Whisk all the other ingredients into a bowl until it is completely combined. Once you feel the mixture is done, pour it into your tin and bake in the

oven for 40 minutes. This will give your cheesecake a golden brown finish and will look delicious! After this, turn off the oven and leave to cool. Mix the topping ingredients and swirl over your beautiful cheesecake for a lemony finish.

AFTER THE END by amy plum

MALAIKA F I R T H Malaika Firth caused a bit of a stir earlier on in the year when she was signed for a Prada campaign; the second black model ever to be in a Prada campaign, the first being Naomi Campbell 19 years previously. She now also has a Burberry campaign under her belt and I have a feeling the interest in her will only grow in 2014

BABY STRANGE Things are looking good for Glasgow based trio Baby Strange after supporting both Palma Violets and Swim Deep last year on their UK tours and gaining quite a fanbase as a result. The punk band have recently released their new single ‘Friend’ which means an album in 2014? We can only hope!

The book has already been a huge hit in the US so I can’t wait for After The End to come out in May in the UK. It is the first of the After The End trilogy by Amy Plum, who is best known for the Die For Me series. The book is told by Juneau, a young girl who lives with a small clan in Alaska after few escaped the nuclear radiation that occurred from World War 3. One day when she comes back from hunting to find her entire clan has disappeared, and the novel follows her quest to try and find her clan and figure out where they went. DELEVINGN A career change is on the cards for Cara Delevingne in 2014 as she quits modelling (permanently? we do not know) to follow her real passion of music and film, starting off the year starring in Kids In Love, The Face Of An Angel and London Fields.

TOM HOLLAND

CHRISTOPHER KANE Scottish born Christopher Kane is set to do more great things again in 2014, after winning Scottish Designer of the Year Award and Womenswear Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards. He also had his brand bought over by LVMH, he is now planning to open his first boutique in London’s Mayfair.

Someone who is going to continue to be big over the next year is Tom Holland. I originally saw him in ‘The Impossible’ as the oldest of the three brothers, and I was blown away by his incredible talent. Since then he has also been in How I Live Now, but most excitingly will be starring in a new film called ‘In The Heart Of The Sea’, starring Chris Hemsworth, Cillian Murphy and Ben Wishaw.

WA R PA I N T

A book adaptation we are really excited about is The Book Thief, a heart-warming but also heart breaking tale of Liesel, a young girl living in WW2 Germany who finds comfort in stealing books. The film will star Roger Allam as death, and includes other big names like Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson.

The L.A rock band Warpaint will release their 2nd studio album on the 20th January in the UK and 21st in the US. YAY! After the success of their single ‘I’m Aquarius’ accompanied by a brilliant Sci-Fi video, the British band announce the new album, ‘LOVE LETTERS’ to be released mid march next year! I, for one, can’t wait to hear what poppy fun they have in store for us this time!

I N S I D E L L E W Y N D A V I S This highly anticipated new film from The Coen Brothers looks like one of the best releases 2014 will see. Following a week in the life of Llewyn Davis, a struggling folk singer in 1961, the film promises a tremendous cast featuring Carey Mulligan, Oscar Isaacs and, a coen brothers favourite, John Goodman, and an even better soundtrack playing host to the beautiful folky sounds of Marcus Mumford and Bob Dylan amoung others. Inside Llewyn Davis will be showing in the UK from the 24th of January.

MØ Danish singer/songwriter MØ is definately one to watch in 2014 with ther debut studio album ‘No Mythologies to Follow’ being released on february 24th of this year. Her soulful voice mixed with R&B and electorinic beats make for a really great listen! She spent 2013 supporting Major Laser and releasing her first EP Bikini Daze so we’re super excited to see what else she has in store!

BOMBAY BICYLE CLUB

After the well deserved Hype over ‘Carry Me’ it’s safe to say we are very excited about the release of ‘so long, see you tomorrow’ the 4th album form bombay bicycle club on 3rd February 2014!

NEELAM J O H A L Another model to watch out for is 18 year old British/Indian model Neelam Johal. She is also in the Burberry campaign and was one of my favourites in the Burberry show earlier in the year, and I know that this is only the beginning for her.

SEATTLE YACHT CLUB The reason behind your name? We were deliberating what would make the perfect name and wanted something that was a little extravagant! After brain storming we came up with a name we loved but then found it was already taken, however that band had played at the Seattle Yacht Club and that was it, we loved the name and decided to use it as the name of the band. It was that lovely feeling you get when everything feels like its fallen into place. We wanted something bright and majestic to fit the sound of our music and this was the perfect fit. Who inspires you musically? We take inspiration from everything we do and from witnessing other peoples ups and downs – and of course acts inspire different aspects of our song craft! We’re huge fans of Quincy Jones’ production with Michael Jackson, the songs and sounds they came up with together is mesmerising. We are also in love with Godley and Creme for their extrovert production and out-of-this-world approach to songwriting. We try to keep our songs current and accessible and listening to music and researching helps us take in deep breaths of inspiration before we exhale our own songs. From these influences we have learnt how to make the most from our own experiences and observation

and churn them into accessible catchy songs. What music have you been listening to this year? There’s been a fair few bands this year that have really impressed us with their fresh sound, bands like Clean Bandit and Chris Malinchak, who’s songs and sound really stuck out for us. A few bands we have seen this year live that blew us away are Hot Chip, Daughter, Phoenix, Mystery Jets, Chvrches; they always perform their songs to such an incredibly high standard which we strive to replicate ourselves. Denis has been listening to Brian Eno, Steve Reich, 10cc, Burt Bacherach & Hal David a lot this last year which inspires his artistic side. There also a few classic bands that we really like such as Queen, David Bowie and The Kinks who really present song craft at its best! We have our own hidden treasures too; Denis is a secret Haircut 100 fan and Tom has had a year filled with the Motley Crew and Santigold, a very different end to the spectrum to SYC but very influential and enjoyable! And in some ways opposites attract, like marmite and honey! what was your moment of 2013?

favourite

2013 has been a really great year for us! We’ve worked hard on writing, recording and making our own videos

and it’s fair to say we’ve also had a lot of fun, like performing in trees and dancing on beaches for our videos - but our favourite moment would have to be when Tom Robinson from BBC 6 Music & Introducing started playing our tracks on his shows having found us through our Social Media channels; and then predicted in a review of us in July we would be on the Radio 1 playlist and playing major festival slots within a year Receiving praise from the higher echelons at BBCRadio really gave us a huge confidence boost to work hard at writing new songs and get ourselves out there. All we can do now is meet the challenge! What are your plans as a band for 2014? Well January is going to be a very busy month, we’re releasing a new single along with a video and have also got some exciting gigs we’re looking forward to playing and it won’t stop there! We really want to keep building our fan base further and keep our social media buzzing! We’ll be releasing more singles with accompanying promo clips and looking forward to playing more festivals along side some support tours building our profile; and we would love to make our way to the USA for our ever growing fan base out there - so here’s to a great 2014!

No. ISSUE

It’s that time where we thank everyone supported us during this intense process.

who

Thanks to SPS and Seattle Yacht Club for providing us with brilliant and interesting interviews. A special thanks goes to One Direction, without who’s Midnight Memories album we would not have over come the fall outs between us and united in cheesey song.

And lastly, thanks to you guys for reading and coming back for our second issue! Can’t wait to see you for our third. It’s been awesome, and we hope you enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed making it. See you soon, Eilidh and Maddy
