I
t can be daunting making your first step into the world of sustainable bridal fashion, so we let Monica Marriott-Mills, expert in all things luxury, bridal and slow fashion, tell us how you can make a start on a more eco-conscious wedding wardrobe… For Monica, the idea of “adopting the ‘slow fashion’ mentality means making an active and conscious decision to really think before you shop - it’s not about being perfect, but making small steps to do your part for the planet”. This takes a lot of the pressure off for brides to get everything right first time, “just remember to ask yourself how much wear you’ll get out of a piece before buying it to avoid getting sucked into the ‘trend chase’”, says Monica. So, sustainable brides are looking to form a timeless, unique capsule wardrobe that can be re-styled and re-worked to suit your lifestyle pre and post-wedding, but how do brides start? Monica advises starting with a moodboard, “have a browse on Pinterest and Instagram to discover silhouettes and fabrics that appeal to you, then you can venture into the world of buying!” Monica states that the most obvious way is to buy preloved, “preloved doesn’t mean you have to compromise on style, bridal brands like Brides Do Good offer preloved dresses and separates from high-end designers such as Pronovias and Halfpenny London at a discount”, so you can save some pennies and the planet. “Brides Do Good partner with brides and brands to curate a unique collection of gowns and donate one third of their profits to charity projects empowering women and working to end child marriage”, which sounds like a fantastic way to give back to the world to us. Another conscious shopping tip from Monica is to “have a two-piece or bridal separate made, which can be re-styled and re-worn after you say ‘I do’”. Or if you want something more bespoke use a designer like Emma Beaumont with her brand Miller White, “Emma is actually the designer of my wedding dress, she designs fashion-forward yet ethical dresses in organic materials”. But bespoke doesn’t have to mean expensive, Monica explains, “once you’ve factored in alterations and styling with an off-the-rail gown, the bespoke route can often work

We spoke to slow bridal fashion expert, Monica Marriott-Mills, on how to keep sustainability in mind when dress hunting! out the same and you get a one-of-a-kind couture gown at the end!” Many brides could worry that preloved buying means your pieces won’t be unique to you, but don’t panic, Monica is here to soothe your concerns! She explains that a great route to go down is to “have a preloved dress reworked into something more suited to you, after all many preloved gowns will only be stocked in one size and will need altering anyway so take the opportunity to switch the style up to make it personalised to you!”. You can even rework a family dress as a touching way to pay tribute to someone you love, “many of us keep our wedding dresses vacuum packed in an attic somewhere, so give them a second life, after all it’s your big day!”, she beams. Going sustainable is also a great way to save money, “if finding a unique gown with history and giving it another life was not enough, you can discover some preloved gems in shops for a bargain price!”, Monica gushes, “you would be surprised at the number of charities that have dedicated bridal stores, such as Oxfam and British Red Cross, where you can grab a gown for a killer price!” Overall, the biggest takeaway Monica wants all you budding sustainable brides to know is that just taking the first step is the most important part, “no one is perfect but if we all take small steps to improve our buying habits and choose quality over quantity, the planet will thank us and I promise you’ll feel the part on your big day knowing you worked hard to put together a stylish sustainable look. The Right Bouquet for Your Dress Silhouette When it comes to choosing a bouquet to complement the design and silhouette of a wedding dress, brides need to consider far more than their favourite flowers. The shape of the dress is an essential element to bear in mind when considering the overall look. Blooming Haus, one of the UK's most innovative floral design studios, will always sit down with the bride to discuss the shape and style of her dress, before recommending the bouquet to match her gown. Master florist Michal Kowalski and Michael Dariane have put together a short guide on how to choose the right florals for your bridal look:
THE PETIT BOUQUET WITH THE SLEEK GOWN
Column dresses require smaller bouquet shapes, as this way the dress doesn’t get lost behind your floral composition. Sheath-style wedding dresses are a modern take on the traditional wedding dress and they work beautifully with a bouquet composed of the same flowers and colour palette, offering a timeless and classic look. Whether the dress is figure-hugging or drops straight to the floor, a favourite bouquet shape for this style should be on the smaller side in a rounder shape to contrast the rectangular lines.
THE SUMPTUOUS BOUQUET WITH THE BALLGOWN
Without the proper guidance, ballroom gowns are an easy one for brides to get wrong. They can very easily become over the top, or the bouquet gets lost behind the dress. How do you get it right? Big blooms mixed in with smaller daintier blooms that accentuate the colours and textures of the day are a great way to keep the middle ground between size and statement. The stunning simplicity that A-lines add means one can play around with pops of colour and textures that tie in beautifully with your venue to add interest. Hand-tied bouquet types work brilliantly too for that freshly-picked feel!

How to on Your Wedding Day There’s no denying that large-scale weddings can take their toll on the environment. All of the decorations, catering and travel generate carbon emissions and leftover waste after the day comes to an end. But it’s not all doom and gloom, as even making a few sustainable swaps can add up to make a positive impact! While it’s challenging to create a completely carbon-neutral wedding, we’ve rounded up some easy eco-tips to help you make some green planning choices in the lead-up to your special celebration…

Your engagement ring is a beautiful reminder of your promise to each other, but no matter how much it costs, it’s the sentimental value that matters the most. For an even more ethical jewel, bidding for a vintage gem at an auction will be a unique and timeless choice. Alternatively, some couples might have an heirloom in the family to pop the question with, or if you’re open to embracing the latest technology, opting for a lab-grown diamond emits a lower level of pollution.
Micro-weddings were a nonnegotiable during the pandemic, but now they’ve become a popular choice. We believe this trend is here to stay, with brides and grooms selecting a smaller guest list to create a more intimate atmosphere, lower the costs and reduce excess waste. By sharing the day with people you know well, you’ll reduce the space needed to host everyone, which has a domino effect on the equipment and catering emissions. Sometimes less really is more!
Traditionally, couples would send out a save the date and an official invite with RSVP cards, which is always a beautiful keepsake to receive! However, by reducing the amount of post, you save the environment and go easier on your wallet. There are some great online companies out there, such as Paperless Post and Greenvelope, that have creative designs to send by email. But if you still love the physical feeling of an invite, then opt for recycled or plantable seed paper.

You’ll beam from the inside out knowing that the products on your skin are sustainable too.
Wedding favours are the added extra that is not always on everyone’s priority list. But if you are keen on leaving a small gift to thank your guests, there are lots of sustainable solutions. Edible favours, such as personalised cookies or mini cocktail jars leave little waste and double up as a delightful table placemat. Another popular idea is a potted succulent or plant. Not only do they make beautiful botanical décor, but they’ll also remind guests of your special day as they grow.
12. CONSCIOUS CONFETTI Your confetti exit is the ultimate photo opportunity that you’ll have on your wall for many years to come. As your friends and family toss handfuls of colour into the sky, everyone’s faces will light up with the joy of the occasion. While it’s a small detail, choosing biodegradable confetti makes a big difference. Later, after the ceremony, try to reuse the flowers in the reception area to save on additional blooms.
Culinary choices are important on your wedding day, as it’s the fuel to keep your guests energised and ready to dance all night! While it’s important to pick the food you love, it’s all about getting that perfect balance. For example, while buffets are more cost-effective, they do create more waste. Also, ask your chef if they source their ingredients locally and by choosing delicious meat-free options, you’ll cut down on carbon emissions.
After the excitement of your big day, you’ll need some downtime! Choosing a minimoon close to home is the more eco-friendly option, but if you have a far-flung destination on your bucket list, this could be the time to go for it! questrian-themed weddings are somewhat limited! If you are renting a ranch for your venue like Blame Her Ranch, it is relatively easy to incorporate horses into practically all facets of your wedding. But forget it if you are thinking about the classic ballroom ceremony unless you have a big “pooper-scooper”.
While BHR is very western given its location in New Mexico, interestingly, Indian weddings where the groom rides in on his favourite steed to meet his bride (called a Baraat) have happened twice at our ranch. It is truly a beautiful and romantic pre or post-ceremony event that includes spicy music, beautiful attire and of course, the groom with the traditional sword. We have also seen more rural equestrian activities like the Tequila donkey which serves all the guests tequila from the back of their saddle. Here are a few more ideas to inspire your horsey wedding! MAKE A GRAND ENTRANCE Create a show-stopping moment on your wedding day by arriving at your venue, or even into your ceremony, upon a noble steed. You do not have to be a professional horse rider, but it is a good idea to get comfortable with your horse before the big event! Yes, we have seen this with the groom, but what is stopping the bride from entering the same dramatic way?

MAKE A PONY YOUR RING-BEARER Why not dress up your equine friend and consider attaching a small pillow to their reins to keep your ring safe? Your horse will need to be led by someone to the venue! Of course, choose a horse with a gentle demeanour or a miniature horse that won’t run away with your rings on your special day! “Our photographer captured every moment in such a special way!”
POPPING THE QUESTION Sunrise over the twinkling water of the Lake District on a fresh-feeling morning – that was the moment this groom chose to propose. “We wrapped up and headed to the lake and for some reason, I said to him in the car: 'you’re not going to propose to me today, are you?' which made no sense as I had zero idea he was actually planning it! He laughed and said no and I 100% believed him. When we got to the lake, I asked him to take a photo of me and when I turned around, he was on one knee!”
AISLE STYLE Finding the one came seamlessly for bride Kirstie, but we’ll let her tell you the story: “I found my designer, Victoria Sanders, at a bridal fair and hers was the first dress I tried on. I knew instantly I wouldn’t find something I liked more. I loved that we could work together to design it too, she sourced special sustainable silk for me.” “We decided to make the skirt of my gown detachable so that, in the evening, I could keep the beautiful bodice but have a slinky, silky dress to dance in. I loved the epic train on the day version of my dress, but it wouldn’t have lasted long once drinks started flowing!” the bride laughs. The groom looked equally dapper in a Ben Sherman suit and Bruno Maglio shoes, with the groomsmen also styled in Ben Sherman and the bridesmaids stunning in Rewritten designs. Frances Mooreh took care of styling the bride’s locks on the big day, while Amy Rose stepped in to create her bridal beauty look.

CASTLE VOWS Kirstie and James opted to tie the knot at the stunning Lulworth Castle. “It’s only 30 minutes from James’s family home in Dorset,” the bride explains. Adding a personal stamp to their gorgeous venue, the bride had a unique brief for her floral designer: “Nudo Blooms created the perfect “slightly dead” English country garden look that I asked for.” Blooms with a vintage, archaic style completed the couple’s theme and complemented their castle venue perfectly, coupled with finishing touches chosen from Crystal Hire. Befitting their grand venue, Dorset Fine Dining cooked up a storm for the newlyweds and their guests, before the cake was cut and the dance floor filled. “We’d absolutely recommend our venue to other couples!” they grin. BEACHY BLISS A peaceful night on the beach on holiday in Egypt set the perfect scene for this couple’s proposal. “Danny led me and our two children down to the beach, where there was a table for four set for dinner and all lit up in lights. A waitress started to wander over with a bottle of Champagne and huge bouquet of roses, when Danny said to our children, 'Parker and Violet, daddy has an important question to ask mummy.' He got down on one knee on the sand and asked me to marry him – of course I said yes!” DESTINATION 'I DO' After considering locations like Italy and Santorini for their destination vows, it was an all-new destination that ultimately captured Danny and Jenny’s hearts. “We’d actually stopped looking when a friend suggested Croatia. It was only two hours away by plane and such a gorgeous country. We then found our planner and venue on Instagram and fell in love with Split. We knew as soon as we stepped into Villa Dalmacija that it was the one. It was set for a wedding later that day and the couple were holding the ceremony at Gallery Mestrovic, so we headed down to see there. We knew it would be the perfect place to celebrate our ceremony too.” “Having big families and holding our wedding abroad made the guest list a challenge, we wanted to invite everyone but had to set a limit somewhere. In the end, we were joined by 82 guests and focused on making sure everyone could relax and have fun.”

AISLE STYLE Bride Jenny stunned in an Enzoani design, coupled with a matching veil that came as a surprise to the bride. “I’d always thought I’d say no to a veil, but having found one with lace to match my dress I decided to try it. I ended up saying yes to both the dress and veil!” Jenny laughs. “Danny wore a three-piece black tux with a black bow tie, while our dads and his groomsmen styled a two-piece version.” “Initially, I’d wanted to have my bridesmaids wear white, but it didn’t look right by my dress. Then I tried them in multiway black styles and they all looked amazing with pampas grass bouquets too.” MAKING MEMORIES “I absolutely adored the time Danny and I spent on a speedboat – once the group photos were finished, Danny and I hopped on the boat at our reception venue’s pontoon and spent some time on the water while our guests arrived at the villa. It was beautiful to sit out at sea and soak up the moment together.” WH

Romance by the River THE PROPOSAL It was at St Catherine’s castle on Cornwall’s coastline at Fowey that this groom chose to ask the all-important question. “It’s a place that we can return to and means a lot to our families,” smiles bride Kate. LOVE AFLOAT Continuing the fairytale theme, Mike and Kate opted to tie the knot at St Nicholas Church, before taking to the water to sail down the river Thames to the beautiful Hampton Court. The Mitre Hotel set the scene for the riverside celebrations to come, where 55 day guests, increasing to 70 for the evening, joined the newlyweds. “I loved the boat ride,” reveals Kate, “it gave us the chance to take some time out just the two of us and debrief on the fact we had just got married!”

SUMMER STYLE “We chose wildflowers for our floral arrangements in all different colours. I wanted a look that was summery, vibrant and with a rustic feel,” recalls the bride. “The orangery where we hosted our reception was already filled with greenery and beautifully decorated, so all we needed to do was add tabletop flowers.” FINDING THE ONE It was at Made with Love, a boutique in Bermondsey, that Kate found the dress of her dreams. “My mum actually picked the dress out for me and it wasn’t what I had expected to wear, but when I put it on it felt completely different to all the other styles I’d tried. My mum even got teary, so I knew it was the one.” “Mike and his groomsmen rented suits from Dapper in Surbiton – Mike chose a traditional blue suit with a subtle check pattern and a light green waistcoat.” “I wanted all my bridesmaids to feel their best so rather than choose their dresses, I gave them a brief of bright, bold and floral and let them pick. They didn’t disappoint!”

A LANDMARK PROPOSAL On what this bride believed to be a surprise trip, the groom pulled off a proposal of truly epic proportions at the Burj Khalifa fountains: “We went to meet a friend who is a resident there and went out onto the viewing platform for the fountains. As the fountains played we chose to have a photo taken together, in which Georgie got down on one knee, opened a ring box and popped the question as Whitney Houston’s ‘I Will Always Love You’ played on the fountains. Of course, the answer was yes!” Sophie smiles.

SETTING THE DATE Keeping these sentimental, the couple chose to tie the knot on the 11th anniversary of their first date, opting for an equally glamorous destination in which to say ‘I do’ – The Grand Hyatt Baha Mar in the Bahamas. “We adore the ocean and the Bahamas have always been our special place. It’s a bucket list place and our friends and family couldn’t wait to visit.” 90 of the couple’s closest family and friends flew out for the occasion, and the couple surprised them all with real-life flamingos on the guest list, too! FINDING THE ONE Working in bridal design herself, creating gorgeous bridesmaid dress designs, this bride knew exactly what she wanted when it came to finding her dream Berta gown. “I’ve always been a girly girl and Berta was a dream come true. My parents gifted me my beautiful dress. The sparkly fabric isn’t something I thought I’d have

chosen, but as soon as it was on I knew I wouldn’t find a better dress.” Sophie found the one at The Wedding Club in Knightsbridge, also trying on styles to make sure she was certain at her sister’s boutique, Browns Bride. The groom and groomsmen made a unique choice with a sage suit colourway from Reiss, which perfectly complemented the silver sparkle on the bride’s dress. THE BIG DAY “Getting ready we were both very nervous!” the bride admits. “We had the Pool Side Villa and the groom and groomsmen had the King Suite. I was lucky to have my lifelong friend Alishea as my makeup artist and my sister-in-law Alix as my hair stylist. My mum and triplet sisters helped get me ready, we do everything together and it was one of the most special moments of my life.” Sophie walked down the aisle to Beyoncé and Stevie Wonder’s ‘So Amazing’ and later opened the dance floor with her new husband to ‘Stand By Me’ by Ben E King. “We wanted a song our guests could join with us and had two huge floor sparklers illuminate our first dance, adding to the drama as I removed my overskirt to reveal a second look,” the bride grins. “It was a once-in-a-lifetime destination and we have never enjoyed ourselves or laughed so much as we did on our wedding day,” the newlyweds smile. Going for Gold SETTING THE SCENE Chloe and Nader said ‘I do’ at the height of summer, sharing the celebration with 100 guests. “We said our vows in the beautiful St Peter’s Church in Wrecclesham. We attended services there in the year before our wedding and felt so warmly welcomed. We had an organist, hymns and readings during our ceremony, it was perfect.” Northbrook Park was the couple’s venue of choice for their reception. “We hosted our reception in the beautiful orangery that opened onto a walled garden, which is where we hosted the drinks reception with a saxophonist playing throughout. It felt absolutely magical to us with peacocks wandering the grounds. Our venue also had ten cottages on site, so our guests could stay with us too.”

Il Teatro is an ‘al fresco’ restaurant and bar offering fabulous Italian cuisine. There is a choice of several pizzas all baked in a wood-fired oven, and a variety of pasta and meat dishes to tantalise your tastebuds. The attentive staff are very knowledgeable and can recommend the best wine for each dish. The selection of wines I sampled were paired with an accompanying dish to bring out the delicate flavours of the food. With the enchanting pool side view I enjoyed a dreamy experience with the best of Italian cuisine. Parklane has partnerships with NAMMOS and LPM providing innovative menus in a stylish destination. During my time in Limassol I was invited to the launch of newly opened Nammos. This new exclusive destination restaurant embraced by the Mediterranean sea allows you to indulge in the finest gastronomy. The launch event included a 5-course meal showcasing their menu paired with excellent entertainment and superb service. I enjoyed a sublime selection of succulent seafood, premium meats and the finest selection of drinks. The evening kicked off with a DJ set from Antonis Dimitriadis and continued with Greek singer, Antonis Remos and the Gipsy Kings. Set on the resort's beachfront, the vibrant Nammos is a fun experience to keep you entertained. DISCOVER LIMASSOL During my stay, I was excited to experience the culture of this traditional area, steeped in history. Within easy reach of the vibrant Limassol city, you can find two marinas, a historic harbour and a range of fine dining options. On my final day in Cyprus I visited Lefkara, a small village showcasing the art of traditional lace-making and embroidery. This village is full of character with magnificent architecture and a variety of independent shops. The Church of Lefkara, dedicated to the Holy Cross, is surrounded by mountain views and is definitely a must-see! I experienced the Perfumery Theme Park to learn all about the history of Cypriot perfumery. After being given a tour of the park, I had a glimpse of the perfume making process, this included a personalised perfume experiment and a pottery making class. The handmade clay perfume bottles with the natural perfume made from botanical materials creates a special, unique scent available to purchase direct from Parklane.

AN APULIAN ADVENTURE The sound of lapping azure waves along the shore, the heady fragrance of citrus and sweet aromas of bougainvillea blooms and the delicious tastes of delectable Italian classics on your tongue, these were the lasting memories I took from Apulia and so could you for your wedding celebrations. My stay at the Palazzo Ducale Venturi was one-of-a-kind, a luxury 5-star boutique hotel restored from an aristocratic palace from the 16th century in the quaint village of Minervino di Lecce, the hotel was the perfect mix of culture, history and luxury. From the moment I stepped through the historic doors of the Italian palace, I felt so welcomed by the attentive staff and general manager, Martina, who saw to our every need. A tour of the venue proved the rich culture of the hotel as we were whisked around winding stone staircases, floor to ceiling windows beaming with Apulian sunshine, a gleaming blue outdoor pool and cool stone rooms providing an oasis from the heat. As we ventured outside, the dappled sunlight gleamed through a decadent flower covered archway and I was transported into a photographer’s dream as I imagined the

stunning wedding pictures that could be captured among the pillars and blooms at the Palazzo’s gardens. I couldn’t imagine a more perfect wedding aisle to start out your Mediterranean celebrations and step into married life. After a peaceful night in the lovingly restored rooms, complete with authentic sage shutters and historic Salento wall paintings, we were greeted by a luxurious breakfast spread that was a treat for all of our senses! Overflowing with juicy cherries, melons and peaches on one table and fresh pastries and cakes on another, we were spoilt for choice. The easiest decision for me was my drink of choice, I still dream of their freshly squeezed pear juice and enjoyed it every morning of the trip. With a belly full of fuel, we travelled to the local town of Otranto for a hike along the southern Adria coast and even took a dip in the sea to cool off halfway along. To the thanks of our feet, we rode motorised rickshaws back to the hotel and felt the wind in our hair as we travelled through the gorgeous town of Lecce. One of the highlights of my trip to Southern Italy has to be the delicious Apulian cuisine we were treated to throughout our trip. Everything chef Antonio Russo created was magical, from guided cooking classes making our own pizza and pasta using traditional techniques in their ancient salt ovens to sampling the produce of Salento’s seas in gastronomic combinations at evening dinners. The hotel even offers a whisky pairing dinner where dishes like blue fish turban and saffron pecorino sauce and Pasticciotto with candied orange custard are paired with whiskies from Ireland, Scotland, USA and even Asia, perfect for an intimate dinner for you and your loved ones throughout your wedding celebrations.
Travel After the stress of wedmin, there is no better place to unwind and rejuvenate than the relaxation hub that is the Palazzo Ducale Venturi. Lounge by the pool with a book, trial an essential oil massage, sample wine in the orange grove or keep your mind and body in check with their well-equipped gym and yoga classes in the garden. After heating up outside, our favourite thing to do was visit the cryotherapy chamber, a high-tech treatment that operates at -190º for extensive health benefits, trust me, it’s the best way to ensure you’re as chilled as can be for your big day! Apulia was the perfect location for a gorgeous getaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and a haven of treats for your senses. Throughout my time exploring Palazzo Ducale Venturi I was amazed to find boundless new stunning backdrops among the grounds for your special day. There is no more apt location for you to say ‘I do’ than in this Italian treasure!
