hoosing your bridesmaids. Where do you start? What’s seemingly an easy part of wedding planning could turn out to be one of the most pivotal decisions you make. There is plenty of room for error here, and we’ve heard (and witnessed) our fair share of disaster stories. Tempting though it is to excitedly ask your besties to take the title as soon as you get engaged, choosing the best people for the role requires some serious thought. As well as considering if the person in question will make a good bridesmaid (Do they have the time to help you make decorations and come to appointments? Do they have the inclination to help you address envelopes for your invitations? Will they be a support to you throughout the planning and on the big day?), you should also make sure that they get along with the groom and the rest of the bridal party, that your budget will cover buying as many dresses as you have bridesmaids and assess the size of your wedding – an intimate wedding of 20 guests doesn’t require seven bridesmaids.
But we always say, if you really want someone to be a bridesmaid, then they should be. Imagine getting ready on your wedding morning. Who would be there with you, keeping you calm and offering encouragement? Who will be helping you have the best day ever? That is the person that you should have by your side on the biggest day of your life. This month’s issue is a bridesmaid special and we’ve got plenty of tips and inspo for you. From popping the question (page 48) to gowns for your gang (page 24, 28 and 32) and everything in-between. Not sure what your squad can do to help you with the planning and on the big day? Performed to symbolically unite the love birds as a couple, Linda from Blame Her Ranch talks us through symbolic rituals…
TIE THE KNOT (LITERALLY!) The phrase “tying the knot” is often heard and that's because of this unity tradition where the couple ties a fisherman's knot with a rope or ribbon to symbolise a bond that, rather than break under pressure becomes stronger. CANDLE LIGHTING This is among one of the more popular ceremonies with couples today. In this case, two small candles are placed on the side of one larger candle. The couple each take a small candle that is pre-lit and together, they light the large candle. This symbolises two flames becoming one, just as their lives are. SAND CEREMONY The bride and groom have vials of sand (typically of different colors) that are poured together into a larger glass container. It is said that once the sand is poured and combined, the sand can never be divided again, just as the sanctity of marriage can never be divided and broken. The sand ceremony is very popular at beach-themed weddings! LASSO CEREMONY This tradition is usually associated with Hispanic and Filipino families. Lasso or rope is placed around the couple's shoulders in the form of an eight (the infinity symbol) – after they have exchanged their vows – to symbolize their everlasting union. This is usually done by the officiant, however, family members can also take part in this ritual. The couple wears the lasso throughout the remainder of the service. It is sometimes made of rosary beads, white ribbon, orange flowers, fabric, silver, crystal, or elaborately painted wood. It can also be placed around the couple’s necks, or wrists. If you have children; they may also be included as they will definitely be a part of the new family. 50

ROSE CEREMONY A rose ceremony can be performed after the exchange of vows. In this case, the couple each have a rose that they exchange with one another that will represent their first gift to each other as a married couple. The roses can then be dried and preserved. Roses can also be given to each of the couple’s parents as a gift, uniting the families together. JUMP A BROOM The "jumping the broom" ritual originated in the early 19th century when enslaved African Americans weren't allowed to formally marry. Instead, to unite, the tradition was to lay a broom on the ground and jump over it together. Today, the act represents a "brushing away" of the past in order to start clean. EXIT UNDER AN ARCH OF SWORDS This tradition, which is reserved for military weddings, goes beyond symbolic commitment. The practice is a pledge of fidelity and protection from the military to the couple; service members literally shelter the newly married couple beneath the sword or saber arch as they exit the ceremony. PLANT A TREE If you're getting married outside, consider planting a sapling—it represents growth, something you and your new spouse will do (a lot of!) together. During the ceremony, the couple should place soil from two separate containers on top of the planting, representing two individuals coming together as one. TEQUILA UNITY SHOT You may not realize it, but a good tequila is like a good marriage in many ways. It warms you from the inside, gives you strength and confidence, and helps you face difficult situations with a little bit of ease. Sometimes tequila gives you a little bit of a headache, but you get over it. Tequila is always forgiven. As you each pour a shot for the ritual, you are symbolically adding your own unique strengths that you bring to this marriage. So drink to your wedding day and to lifelong partnership. This shoot at the Hotel Felix in Cambridge combines hues of pastel purple with fresh white stationery sprinkled with calligraphy and delicate blooms. Armfuls of crisp roses adorned the interior and snaked their way around the naked cake. The romantic theme was echoed on the pearl-edged plates and carried through to the bride's gown with lace sleeves. A very English love affair swathed in wisteria blooms creates a timeless style.

This shoot at the Randolph Hotel in Oxford epitomises glamour and class. The bride stunned in a beaded dress with the season's hottest trends: corsetry and flouncy sleeves. Gold foil text popped off the navy stationery suite, with golden accents being carried throughout the styling through the candlesticks and cutlery. The decadent venue was filled with flower arches of blooming white buds and luscious greenery to give a chic Italian feel. The royal blue textures balanced out the gold for a rich and classic style.

POPPING THE QUESTION A soft September sunset reflecting in Lake Garda offered this groom the perfect moment to propose to his bride. “We were on a romantic getaway and had opened a bottle of Champagne on the balcony. It was the most magical, surreal, incredible feeling,” Christa smiles. “I cried a lot!” SETTING THE SCENE Finding the dream wedding venue for this couple meant a space where they could celebrate from dawn until dusk. “We wanted a venue where we could hold the ceremony, reception and have places for our guests to stay. We fell in love with Pelham House as soon as we visited – the grounds are stunning and the food was incredible. It’s a true hidden gem!” 90 guests joined Christa and Brett for the occasion. “I’ll never forget the moment just as I was finally ready to walk down the aisle,” Christa reminisces. “I had butterflies in my stomach and it was so wonderfully overwhelming to have all our closest family and friends there to celebrate us.” The bride stunned in a Stella York design, while the groom and his groomsmen looked dapper in navy suits by Marc Darcy. “My bridesmaids wore multi-way dresses in a Champagne colourway. It was important to me that they felt comfortable so I let them decide what style they liked.”

SIP, SIP, HOORAY The Champagne theme inspired the couple’s décor too, opting for a white and gold palette curated by To Have and To Hire styling. “For the flowers, we continued the neutral theme with a hint of blush,” the bride recalls. “My bouquet was made up of hand-tied roses, dahlia, freesia, astilbe, stocks, veronica and snapdragons.” The floral theme continued to the couple’s wedding cake, which was also adorned with gold leaf detailing. A pianist set the scene for the ceremony perfectly, playing ‘Here Comes the Sun’ by The Beatles as the bride walked down the aisle. As day turned to night, a DJ took over. “We loved that guests had the chance to request songs,” the couple enthuse. PICTURE PERFECT “Our best decision was the photography. We had a second photographer join Katie, so that all angles could be covered. It’s lovely to have the moments we didn’t see firsthand captured on camera to treasure.” WH

WATERSIDE WONDER When starting the search for their dream UK wedding venue, Naomi and David, who call Dubai home, had just one criteria in mind: “We knew we wanted somewhere by the water,” Naomi explains. “That led us to Euridge Manor, and as an added bonus it was relatively near to where I grew up.” The couple had originally thought they’d choose a weekday winter wedding date as they weren’t planning with too much time ahead, and so they were delighted to find out that the bride’s birthday in July was available as a wedding date. “I’m not usually a fan of my birthday, but I got over that pretty quickly,” Naomi laughs. PLANNING MADE PERFECT Long distance wedmin is an art form, and for this couple the challenge was multiplied by travel restrictions at the time. “We managed to squeeze our legal wedding at the Roman Baths, a dress fitting, hair trial, cocktail tasting, menu tasting and suit fittings into four action-packed days,” the bride reveals. “All of our suppliers were fantastic, but a special mention has to go to Jen, our wedding planner, who was a constant source of calm and the most organised person I have ever met.” DRESS WITH A DIFFERENCE The bride chose two gowns for her nuptials – the first a Pronovias design for their Roman Baths ceremony, followed by a Suzanne Neville number for the big

day. After legally tying the knot, Naomi donated her first dress to Brides Do Good. “One third of their profits support charity projects working to empower girls and end child marriage, and their dresses also combat the impact of fashion on the planet,” Naomi explains. “Our drinks reception back home in Dubai gave me a second opportunity to wear my Suzanne Neville dress and I loved it. For now, it’s hanging in my bedroom, but one day it’ll make its way back to the UK to Brides Do Good too.” PARTY TIME Initially dismissing the idea of a first dance for not feeling ‘them’, the couple decided they would share one to ‘At Last’ by Etta James to transition the celebrations from dinner to dancing. “We looked for songs with meanings that resonated with us, rather than songs that made us think of each other, which weren’t necessarily good first dance material.” HONEYMOON HEAVEN After travelling almost 25,000 miles to plan and then tie the knot, they jetted off a final time to the Maldives for their honeymoon. “We went to Milaidhoo. The Maldives is stunning wherever you stay, but there’s something special about Milaidhoo. There’s no place like it and we loved the sandbank picnic in the middle of the ocean with only stingrays for company!” WH

Ready, Set, Elope! THE NEXT CHAPTER After settling into their new home together, Daniel seized the moment on a beautiful summer’s evening to pop the question to his bride. “I arrived home to a walkway of candles through the house and garden to find Dan,” Kristy recalls. “He was standing among balloons and fairy lights and John Legend’s songs were playing quietly in the background. It was so lovely and I was so surprised. Dan had arranged for our families to then arrive for celebratory Champagne!” LONDON CALLING After the pandemic put plans for a Lake Como destination wedding on hold, Kristy and Daniel couldn’t wait to tie the knot and set their hearts on a venue closer to home. “We were looking for a registry office somewhere in the UK with a classic and understated feel. That led us to London’s Marylebone Town Hall and it was the perfect choice. Small, intimate and the perfect backdrop for some lovely photos to remember the day.

FINDING THE ONE Having originally picked a dress for her Lake Como wedding, it was back to the drawing board when it came to the couple’s London nuptials. “I found my original dress in 2019 and I’m saving it for our 2022 celebration,” Kristy reveals. “For our London wedding, I opted for a white suit to be a little different and not take the shine off my wedding dress to come in Italy. I felt stylish and comfortable and no one spotted that I was hiding a little bump underneath my suit too!” the bride grins. “Hiring a stylist made such a difference to the look and feel of our wedding day”
THE BIG DAY For Lewis and Leigh, there was more to consider when it came to setting the date than simply the weather. “Our very first date was on the 3rd August 2008 when we were teenage sweethearts and we wanted a date as close to that as possible for our wedding, so we chose a Monday in August to get married at St Audries Park in Somerset.” “Leigh fell in love with the venue straight away,” Lewis smiles. “They were very accommodating and you could get married in their church, in the main house or in the orangery. We knew the orangery was the spot for us – it was so spacious and light.” THE DRESS After welcoming their fourth child, Leigh wanted to wait a few months before choosing her wedding dress. “I’d booked my appointment for January, but then we went into lockdown! So in the end, I finally got to try on dresses in April, only four months before the wedding. Thankfully I fell for the first dress I tried on and the wonderful team at Krystle Brides put in a rush order to receive my dress in time. They also made custom lace sleeves so my gown was truly unique.” THE I DOS After spending the morning enjoying pampered preparations with her bridesmaids, mum, grandmother and daughters, Leigh was ready to walk down the aisle.

“Having a good photographer and videographer is a must”
“The day went by so fast. Walking down the aisle was the one moment I truly did feel like a bride and seeing my dad just beforehand was very emotional. I will cherish seeing our children all dressed up for the occasion, too.” THE SOUNDTRACK “We had live singing and acoustic guitar for our drinks reception and wedding breakfast, and then a DJ for the evening accompanied by a singer and saxophonist! Our first dance was to ‘High’ by the Lighthouse Family, we both love the song and knew we’d be able to dance to it together.” It’s no surprise that the bride swapped her heels for flipflops as the night went on and the couple danced the night away surrounded by family and friends. “We would recommend our venue in a heartbeat – it was picture-perfect, set in beautiful grounds, with everything you could ask for under one roof. The food was incredible and Courtney, our planner, went out of her way to ensure everything ran smoothly. Most of our guests stayed overnight and we all shared breakfast together the next morning, a lovely way to finish our celebrations.” WH

Romance Inn the City LONDON LOVE STORY After a Christmas Eve proposal, Shelley and Ollie set about planning their dream city wedding and gave themselves less than 12 months to pull it off. The bride opted for a gown from Whistles, joined by bridesmaids in dusty rose dresses from JJs House, while the groom looked dapper in a navy John Lewis number, paired with Oliver Sweeney shoes and a Ted Baker tie. Stoke Newington Town Hall set the scene for their heartfelt ceremony, before a London bus delivered the guests to the reception. “Ollie and I travelled separately in an old 1930s London taxi,” Shelley reveals. “This meant we had some time just the two of us, roof down, driving through London with people congratulating us and tooting their horns.” LOCK IT INN Key to this couple’s vision was for the guests to mix and celebrate in a low-key setting, and The Star in Highgate delivered in spades.

“We wanted a relaxed wedding, where our guests could spill out onto the street and mingle as they would on a normal evening at the pub. The venue gave us sole use of the pub for the entire day and our guests could party until midnight!” they grin. 80 family and friends came to join the happy couple for the ceremony and meal, with the guest list topping 100 for the evening party. FAIRY LIGHTS AND FLOWERS This was the theme that guided the couple’s décor, teaming pink roses, eucalyptus and gypsophila with fairy lights and white bunting. “We scattered photos of us over the years on the table and lit pillar candles all around the venue. The pub was Victorian and had a lot of character, so we didn’t have to do much to make it look pretty.” The cherry on the cake was the couple’s threetier semi-naked cake. “We opted for Victoria sponge, lemon and rose water flavoured tiers. fter the ceremony and the food, all your guests are expected to be entertained, or what we like to refer to at Blame Her Ranch as “Weddingtainment”.
The old days of a simple band are long gone! Your options are truly unlimited. And, even allows you to go in one direction, but then change directions completely later in the evening. People want to shake their bootie at a wedding. Here are some fun ideas: PIANIST: Entertainment is not just limited to postceremonial activities. We have seen many times at BHR, and at our daughter’s wedding, a pianist entertaining the guests at an opening cocktail party. You can customise the music selection to your favorites and also encourage guests to join in with the vocals. A slight twist on this is happening this summer at BHR with a harpist filling in for the ivory keys! DJ DISCO: Everybody likes a disco and everyone enjoys a lively and entertaining DJ. Here at BHR, Randy’s Rentals offers complete DJ and music services that can be just as fun as live entertainment at a fraction of the cost. Add in the Magic Mirror Photo booth and you have pictures to commemorate the evening! ORCHESTRA: For those wanting something a little more sophisticated and timeless, go with a 12-piece orchestra. I’ve been to many weddings where the black-tie orchestra plays everything from classics to today’s hits with such spirit and gusto, you will think you are back in the 50s dancing at the Copa Cabana! THEMED BAND: When booking our son’s and daughter’s wedding at BHR, we engaged a music consultant and representative to help us with entertainment. The consultant brought forward over a 150 different bands ranging from Mariachi to Sole to Latin American street bands. Our new son-in-law picked a Cuban band which was very fun and lively, while our son selected a Columbian (his wife’s nationality)
Salsa singing and dancing group. As we mentioned earlier, we coupled this at the end of the evening with a rock DJ for a truly fun night! COWBOY SWING: Of course at a ranch like BHR, Country Western is a big hit. What makes it extra special is the singa-long, two-step and other cowboy activities that bring life to the party. KARAOKE: Save this one for later in the night and you’re bound to get even more brilliant, hilarious and enthusiastic results! Be sure to do a couple’s duet, but rehearse beforehand to “wow” your guests. Here at BHR, we have our own Karaoke system. SINGING WAITERS: Here’s an idea we have not seen at the ranch, but love it. Singing waiters would totally surprise your guests while serving food to everyone. Putting on a little show while serving you would be truly memorable. ROCKING WEDDING DANCE ROUTINE: Whether your bridesmaids surprise you with a pre-planned number, or your guests hotfoot it to the dance floor for the Cha Cha Slide, dance routines are always heaps of fun! Weddingtainment takes some planning and thought. So start planning early and involve families and the wedding party! THE LOWDOWN: Set in an achingly cool location, just off Hackney Road in the heart of East London, Mama Shelter Shoreditch has turned the budget hotel scene on its head, offering up cosiness, colour, and fun in abundance. It’s the curious blend of low-hanging lampshades and retro arcade machines, quirky hand-painted ceilings and colourful furnishings that give it its standout personality; mustard-yellow sofas and wicker armchairs are set against a backdrop of leafy green foliage and vintage pinball machines. Having experienced this hotel with a hen party, one of the highlights of our stay was the food and drink. It’s fun to go out, but you’ll never be short of options if you choose to stay in. Grab brunch or dinner in the vibrant restaurant (the menu is French-inspired, but you’ll find pretty much anything your heart desires) before heading to the garden bar for a round (or two) of spicy margaritas. The atmosphere is warm and fun, and the service is as peppy as the décor – you just know the staff are there to ensure you all have a good time. Post dinner or check-in, climb down to the basement to belt out power ballads without fear of being disturbed in one of two private karaoke rooms, enjoying snacks and drinks in between songs when The Vibe your vocal cords need a rest. Shangri-La at The Shard Standing at the bottom of The Shard and looking up at the 95 levels presents the dizzying realisation of the full height of the building. Checking into Shangri-La The Shard, which is on floors 34 to 52, we were sure to get a taste of the high life!
Arriving at our room, which boasted floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows, we got our first glimpse of the city view below, spotting famous landmarks at every angle with the binoculars left out for us. Located on the 50th floor, we really did have our heads in the clouds. The bedrooms are all equipped with luxury amenities, including L’Occitane toiletries (that smell delicious), 300-thread-count Frette bed linens, a pillow menu, a fully stocked minibar, 40-inch LED television and a second television hidden in the bathroom mirror. A huge free-standing bath is positioned next to the window, for a relaxing soak while you watch the world go by. For a totally unique experience head to the hotel's Sky Pool. On the 52nd floor, this is an infinity pool like no other. A calm oasis above the city, swim the length of the pool as airplanes come into land, float by the edge watching trains pull out of the station or relax in the sky-high sauna. Dining in the hotel’s restaurant Ting we savoured mouth-watering dishes created using local ingredients with an Asian influence, overlooking the twinkling London lights. A meal here is the height of romance for minimooners. You can even exchange vows above the clouds at Shangri-la The Shard. Steeped in authentic British charm, The Churchill offers a sophisticated stay in Marylebone, tucked behind Hyde Park and Oxford Street. Beachside in Barbados
Becci Clubb takes us on a journey around the Caribbean Island of Barbados…
D
riving from the airport to our first resort, we got a glimpse of the island. Dotted with colourful Chattel houses, fruit and vegetable stalls and fields of tall, swaying sugar cane, Barbados is a Caribbean gem. With average daytime temperatures of around 30 degrees year-round, coupled with light winds, this Caribbean island is one that you can visit at any time of year. Known for having some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, as the birthplace of rum and home to superstar Rhianna, Barbados has so much to offer tourists and we couldn’t wait to start exploring.
During our visit, we ventured to the west, east and south coasts of the island and the difference between them is vast. The east coast is very rural, unspoilt and scarcely populated. The rough waves of the North Atlantic sea meet the coral reefs on this side of the island, making it unsafe for bathing and swimming, but breathtakingly beautiful. The south coast is perfect for surfing and, if you’re lucky, you might spot turtles swimming in the waves. Over on the west coast, golden sands are lapped by the gentle ripples of the Caribbean Sea. Said to be the more luxurious side of the island, the west coast is favoured by tourists and is more populated by the locals, too. Now an independent country, Barbados was once part of the British Empire and because of this it has close ties to the British Monarchy, is English speaking and shares many of the UK’s public holiday dates. When it comes to traditional meals though, there are some differences. Flying fish with a side of cou cou (a sort of savoury porridge made with cornmeal) is the national dish of Barbados. Flying fish – named because of the way it jumps out of the water with rigid ‘wings’ – is the most popular fish to catch on the island. Pork Souse is another traditional dish, made up of pickled pork usually served with sweet potato. All of the beaches on the island are public, even if they appear to be in front of only one hotel. So if you fancy a day touring the coast you can hop on the Reggie bus for around 3.50 Barbados dollars (less than £2) and jump off when you see a sandy stretch to explore. All heading in and out of the capital, Bridgetown, the Reggie bus is the cheapest and easiest way to get around.

HEAD TO OISTINS The historic fishing market attracts hundreds of visitors on Friday and Saturday nights, who come to enjoy local, traditional food and music. You can make your own way or book a tour through a tour provider. CATAMARAN SNORKELLING CRUISE Enjoy a catamaran cruise from Bridgetown and sail along part of the west coast of the island, stopping at two snorkelling spots. The first to swim with turtles and rays and the second to explore shipwrecks that have become a thriving habitat for tropical fish. When you're back onboard, enjoy rum punch and lunch. ISLAND SAFARI TOUR Off-road in an all-terrain jeep around the island. This scenic tour will take you off the beaten track to some key sights, including Bathsheba and Hackleton’s Cliff, with a knowledgeable tour guide. HARRISONS CAVE Explore the underground limestone cavern from the comfort of an electric tram. Wind along the underground tunnels taking in the natural formations. RUM TOUR Visit a rum distillery, find out about the production process and taste various flavours on an organised tour.

THE CRANE
Best for fabulous rooms and suites and picturesque lagoon pools Located in the southeast of Barbados, world-renowned Crane Beach is flanked by dramatic cliffs and towering palm trees. White foamy waves break along the soft, pink-tinged sand creating a postcard-perfect beach scene. Perched on the clifftop above the beach sits the oldest continually operating hotel in the Caribbean, The Crane. Built in 1887, The Crane is known for being the most historic, luxury hotel in Barbados. Over the years the resort has expanded to its current 252 luxurious residences and suites. From the outside, the resort’s suites are castle-like in their appearance, with imposing towers at all four corners of the coral-stone buildings. Arriving at our suite, we were amazed by how spacious it was – a massive 1,607 square feet. We were staying in a One Bedroom Suite with a Plunge Pool, with views straight out to the Atlantic Ocean. The décor perfectly pairs 19th century grander (we had a huge mahogany four-poster bed and a bay window in the dining area finished with large wooden shutters) with modern touches, such as the spa shower and Jacuzzi bath. A fully equipped granite kitchen, living space with plush oversized sofas and dining table, kingsize bed and enormous bathroom made us feel at home. An expansive balcony complete with lounger beds and a round plunge pool gave us a glorious outside space with views across the resort and the sea. With the full selfcatering facilities, we could have easily stayed in our suite for the duration of our visit, soaking up the sun from the balcony, taking an occasional dip in the plunge pool to cool off, and relaxing in the apartment. But the resort has so much to offer that we were drawn back out… At the centre of the resort, you’ll find The Crane Village, with paved walkways, oldfashioned street lights and shuttered windows. Within the village there’s a grocery store (for you to stock up your suite’s kitchen), a couple of boutique shops, a kids’ club, and a selection of bars and restaurants – seven to be exact! Dine in style at L’Azure restaurant overlooking the sea from its clifftop position. Feast on traditional Caribbean cuisine at breakfast and dinner. Serving gourmet Japanese and Thai dishes with equally fantastic sea views, Zen restaurant has an all-glass frontage and classic Japanese styling. I recommend trying the Sakura sushi, which you can watch the chef roll in the open sushi kitchen before the dish is brought to your
table. In the heart of the Crane Village, D’Onofrios serves authentic Italian dishes, while Bar 1887 offers a selection of Bajan tapas, cocktails, wines and beers. The Carriage House, once the official stable of the hotel, is a modern poolside bar, serving a selection of drinks and light dishes during the day. It’s safe to say, you won’t go hungry during your stay. Access to the beach is at the far edge of the resort. Hop in the glass-fronted lift (the only one of its kind in the Eastern Caribbean) down to the pink-tinged sands. Named one of the world’s top ten beaches by ‘Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous’, Crane Beach is protected by a natural coral reef making it the perfect place to swim or body-board. Dry off and soak up the sun while you enjoy a rum cocktail served in a coconut. If you get peckish head to Grove Bar and Grill, nestled within a coconut grove on the beach, for casual beachside dining or pay a visit to the village cafe and enjoy a delicious cake, speciality coffee, milkshake or homemade ice cream. Set on the cliff edge overlooking the coastline and framed by a row of classic Doric columns is the resort’s Historic Pool. An adults-only oasis, unwind by the pool as you listen to the waves break below you. In the adjacent building is the Serenity Spa and just behind is the Historic Gardens where you can join clifftop yoga at sunrise. If you like to start your day with a workout, head to the resort village gym or the tennis courts for a quick game before breakfast. If you fancy a change of scenery, head to one of the other pools in the resort. The cascading, lagoon-style pool complex in the middle of the resort boasts four pools, which makes finding a sun lounger easy, but choosing your favourite spot tricky. One of our favourite spots was the alfresco jacuzzi pool. From here you can see across the lagoon pools and beyond to panoramic views of the big blue below. You can tie the knot at The Crane with a choice of three ceremony spaces. The Clifftop Garden and The Historic Garden can both be set up for up to 150 guests. Say ‘I do’ overlooking the sea before enjoying a cocktail reception with your nearest and dearest. If you want to be right on the seashore, you can marry on the beach with 30 guests before heading to one of the gardens for your drinks reception. Ceremonies can take place every day excluding Sundays and Bank Holidays. After capturing romantic and scenic photographs you and your wedding party can head into The Crane Village to the Town Hall for your wedding breakfast. Best for seclusion and a taste of celebrity-style luxury Travelling further east, our next stop was Beach Houses. The Beach Houses are a row of luxury villas positioned right along the dramatic east coast, known for its more rugged terrain and dramatic coastline, giving unbeatable sea views from their water’s edge location. Skeetes Bay beach, a minute's walk down the road, is untouched without a sun lounger in sight! The rustic coastline is breathtakingly beautiful, but the Beach Houses Villas are anything but rustic. As soon as we opened the front door into the villa we were blown away. Wide bifold glass patio doors immediately show off the spectacular panoramic ocean outlook. We stayed in a one-bedroom Villa. The open plan kitchen and living area open up onto a spacious patio deck, complete with a dining table, loungers and – the piéce de résistance – a 37ft infinity-edge pool with a hot tub built into it. The bedroom, with a huge ensuite bathroom boasting a shower wet room and free-standing bathtub, also opens out onto the patio. Mornings here are blissful; slowly rising to the sound of the sea, grabbing a cup of tea and getting back into the king-size four-poster bed to watch the waves with the doors flung open and the warm breeze coming in. Snap out of your dozy state with a dip in the pool before enjoying breakfast on the patio. The kitchen is fully equipped with a large quartz island, and in the garden you’ll find a barbecue, allowing you to cook up a storm. You can order your groceries and have them delivered to you, stocking up your cupboards for the duration of your stay without even leaving the villa. But for an extra treat, I’d recommend using the Villa Dining Delivery and ordering breakfast to your villa. The Morning Boost breakfast choice includes buttermilk pancakes with berry compete, syrup or cream, eggs your way, breakfast potatoes, and either bacon or sausage, plus yoghurt or fruit, toast and fruit juice. There are delivery options for lunch and dinner too, including pizza delivery – best enjoyed poolside as the sun is setting! Staying at Beach Houses also grants you privileged access to the amenities at the sister resort The Crane, including the restaurants, beach and spa. Best for a laid-back vibe and destination weddings
Set within 2.5 acres of tropical gardens, with towering coconut trees and brightly coloured bougainvillea, Sea Breeze Beach House is a charming all-inclusive boutique resort. As we walked into the resort through the garden, we quickly got feel for the hotel. The calm and friendly atmosphere is inviting and you’ll instantly sense all of your daily stresses melting away. The hotel is situated right on Maxwell Beach. Soft white sands stretch the length of the hotel and beyond. Spend the day at the beach testing out the hotel’s variety of non-motorised water sports, including kayaking, surfing and snorkelling. During our stay, we experienced a Hobie Cat tour. We were taken out by one of the water sports team for a 20-minute tour, which saw us glide across the sparkling sea to the Oistins Pier and back again, jumping into the water to swim with a passing turtle on the way. If you prefer to kick back and relax, pull up one of the hotel’s sun loungers and relax on the beach, taking a refreshing dip in the sea and swimming out to the floating sundeck. As well as the beachfront, the hotel has three pools – a family pool, an adults-only pool and a third pool with in-water loungers beds – and a rum shack with garden benches, so you can choose your favourite location to soak up the Caribbean sunshine. The resort is comprised of three buildings that were originally three different hotels. From the outside, they each have a different style, but inside they have all been refurbished to the same luxurious standard. Inspired by the Caribbean, the rooms are finished with sumptuous furnishings and a modern beach theme, which features across both of the room collections; the Classic Collection and the Luxury Collection. We were staying in an Oceanfront Junior Suite from the Luxury Collection. As we entered our suite we could hear steel pans being played outside, greeting us with a very authentic welcome! The open plan bedroom suite was decorated in turquoise blue hues, showing off the coastal theme. The floor-to-ceiling, glass doors opened up onto a large balcony with glass frontage, giving us uninterrupted sea views from both the balcony and our extra-comfy kingsize bed. Nothing beats
waking up to glorious sunshine and ocean views. Five eateries at the hotel ensure you can find something delicious for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Enjoy a full buffet breakfast in a choice of two restaurants, Mahogany Lounge and Aqua Terra. Lunch and snacks are available at the Flying Fish Bar & Grill or at the beach bar, Tipsy. If you prefer a full buffet lunch the Mahogany Lounge serves a selection of help-yourself dishes. Dinner is served at a choice of three restaurants, each offering a la carte menus that change daily – check out the day’s menu in the morning and book a table at the one that tickles your fancy. In between meals there is an ice cream trike riding around the resort. A delicious and quiant afternoon tea is served on the garden terrace daily and Champagne and canapés beckon at the Aqua Terra terrace as the sun sets each evening. We were also treated to a beach barbecue during our stay. With festoon lights above us, the ocean to our side and our toes in the sand, we dined on barbecue favourites and enjoyed watching limbo dancers and fire eaters perform later in the evening. You can also book private dining and special tasting menus – perfect for celebrating proposals and anniversaries. Although the boutique resort is relatively small – with 122 bedrooms – the wedding offering is vast. Choose from a selection of ceremony locations, including saying ‘I do’ in the hotel's bandstand, decorated with drapes and flowers, or on the beach with the waves breaking ahead of you. After the ceremony, there is a choice of reception locations and wedding breakfast ideas. At Sea Breeze Beach House you can make your island wedding everything you have dreamed of. Of all the options, this would be my choice… You walk down the steps onto the beach and make your way down the sandy aisle, lined with lanterns and tropical foliage arrangements. You say your vows in front of the rolling waves before you enjoy a drinks and canapés reception with your friends and family at Tipsy on the Beach. You and your guests can soak up the sea views, play beach games and capture gorgeous photographs before you head to Aqua Terra, which you have exclusively hired out for your wedding breakfast, set up with round tables. Located at the far the edge of the hotel, you can enjoy privacy while you dine at Aqua Terra, before making speeches and dancing the night away as the stars twinkle overhead. sea-breeze.com

WAVES HOTEL AND SPA Best for a relaxing vibe, calm ocean dips and stunning views
On the platinum west coast of Barbados, Waves Hotel & Spa is a stunning wellness hotel. Favoured for its calmer waters, the west of the island is met by the Caribbean Sea. Walking down the steps into the hotel reception you will feel a sense of calm wash over you as you get your first glimpse of the crystal clear waters below. Our first thoughts? Just wow! The beach here is a serene oasis. Boarded by trees, large white parasols offer shade to large comfortable loungers. At the water's edge waves ripple gently on the shore. As you bathe in the sunshine, the hotel team come around every so often to offer you a spritz of cooling body mist, hand you a refreshing ice lolly or frozen grapes and take drink orders from the comfort of your lounger. The service here is next level. While away a few hours in paradise with a mindful Waves colouring book or, for those looking for activities, there are regular classes including yoga, beach walks and water aerobics. A whole host of water sports await you, from tranquil paddle boarding to the more thrill-seeking banana boat rides. Back upstairs and in the hotel, head to Kyma, the hotel’s cafe, for speciality coffees, milkshakes, cakes, ice creams and light bites. Enjoy the refreshments on the terrace as you take in the shimmering sea views. It really is peaceful here and the water is postcard-perfect. The hotel has a family pool with luxurious canopy beds on the main side of the hotel, but don’t miss the adults-only pool, which is across the road from the main building. This tranquil area is also home to the hotel’s spa. I indulged with the Waves Signature Scent Scrub followed by a Good to Go Massage. The treatment started with choosing the scent that was most in line
with what my body needed, then the expert therapist started the relaxing rituals. After my treatment, I spent some time at the spa pool surrounded by lush gardens, it is so very peaceful. Across the road you will also find the Shisho restaurant, serving Asian inspired cuisine. And, in the main part of the hotel, Seascape restaurant serves a variety of Mediterranean inspired dishes, in either a buffet dining style or an a la carte menu depending on the day you dine. The boutique hotel has 70 eco-chic hotel rooms and suites. The rooms are decorated in soft blues and creams, creating a zen-like atmosphere. Retreat to your own private sanctuary, soaking up the sea views from your balcony with a glass of wine or one of the hotels signature cocktails. Part of the Elegant Hotels group, you can jump on the water taxi to any of the four Elegant Hotels on the west coast and spend the day at a different resort if you fancy a change of scenery or want to spend some time at a different beach. During our stay, we also headed out to the newly opened Positano Restaurant. A short drive away, but still part of the Elegant Hotels group, Positano serve a range of authentic Italian delights. While browsing the menu, another table recommended I try the Caciucco Toscano, a Tuscan seafood stew, and it definately didn’t disappoint! O2 BEACH CLUB
Best for delicious dining, cocktails and an out-of-this-world spa The final leg of our trip took us to Barbados’ newest luxury all-inclusive hotel, O2 Beach Club. From the moment we checked in, we were made to feel like VIP guests. Positioned right on the pristine, white sand of Dover Beach, O2 Beach Club has a modern, luxury beach club aesthetic, with brightly coloured parasols in pink and orange, large luxury sun loungers and inviting pools featuring swim-up bars. St Lawrence Gap, more commonly known as ‘The Gap’, is the area that you’ll find the hotel. A stretch of road dotted with fine restaurants and lively bars, enjoy an evening on The Gap before retiring to your chic and comfortable bedroom. Our Luxury Oceanfront Junior suite was on the sixth floor, giving us great views over the sea and across the coastline. Our open plan suite was beautifully decorated in fuchsia pink and grey, the hotel’s signature colours, with a huge fuchsia rug taking centre stage. Spacious and elegant, the bathroom was equipped with a free-standing bathtub, power shower and The White Company toiletries. As the sun set one evening, we sat on our balcony loungers with a bottle of Prosecco and watched turtles bobbing in and out of the waves – a magical and unforgettable moment. The hotel features three large pools. Two wind around the complex and have swim-up bars, and a third is on the 8th-floor roof deck terrace. Spend your days sun lounger hopping, moving from the beach to the pool to the rooftop and deciding on your favourite space to enjoy the sun. If you’re looking for the perfect area to enjoy cocktails as the sun sets, there is a second decked terrace area with soft sun beds and two whirlpool hot tubs with views over the pool and beach – I tried and tested this and I can confirm sipping a watermelon cooler from the hot tub watching the sun set on another beautiful day in Barbados is as dreamy as it sounds. At O2 Beach Club you can get involved in a range of activities
including daily ‘How To’ classes (which can be anything from how to make crab cakes to how to play steel pans – a skill I tried to perfect with @keimk_music during the trip!), sip and paint classes (learning to paint, while sipping cocktails in front of the beach with @paintandgroove) and non-motorised water sports. The food choices here are delicious. The all-inclusive hotel has a variety of exceptional dining options. Elements restaurant serves a wonderful buffet-style breakfast (try the French toast!) and lunch, with both indoor and outdoor seating. In the evening the restaurant offers a la carte dining or buffet dining, depending on the day, and is positioned in the perfect spot for watching the hotel’s evening entertainment from your table. Oro restaurant is on the 9th floor, with floor to ceiling windows offering panoramic views across the sea. A unique fine-dining experience, Oro serves dishes with a modern fusion of European cuisine with a Caribbean twist. I was very excited to try lobster tail for the first time and it was exceptional. Bluefin is a beachside bar and grill offering lunch and dinner, while Brisa is a rooftop tapas and cocktail lounge. On the 8th floor is one of the very best hotel spas I have visited. The relaxation areas and treatment rooms of Acqua Spa look out across the coast, giving you the perfect calming blue environment to unwind in. Choose a luxurious treatment from the spa menu (I recommend the couples massage for honeymooners) and leave feeling rejuvenated. We enjoyed the massage followed by a Hammam Ritual Bajan Body Revivor. The Hammam taps into Middle Eastern tradition and our session included a body scrub, mask and moisturising oil to self-apply while we were relaxing in the steam.
