2010 Preview Welcome The Diablo Valley College Baseball program prepares for the 2010 season which promises to be exciting and memorable! After a stellar 2009 season which boasted a Big 8 Conference Championship and CCCAA Final Four Appearance, the 2010 Vikings are full of new and promising talent expected to defend the Big 8 Title. Head Coach Mike Neu returns for his 2nd season as Diablo Valley’s Head Coach. The current Vikings will represent and uphold a tradition of baseball here at DVC which dates back to 1951 and boasts over 1,000 wins. Past head coaches include Hall of Famers Ernie Cecaci (337 wins), Steve Ward (357 wins) and Larry Quirico, who was the head coach at both Contra Costa College and DVC during his career. Hugh Boschetti, DVC’s first ever baseball coach, was inducted into the Commission on Athletics Hall of Fame in 1991. Past players include 2 time National Batting Champion Willie McGee, former Giants farmhand Benji Simonton, who led the state in home runs (22), runs (70) and RBI’s (76) in 1992, as well as Junior College standouts Eric Snider and Scott Goucher. Several former players have gone on to play in the College World Series. With strong returners and a great recruiting class, the Vikings look forward to the upcoming 2010 season. Go Vikings!

Viking Baseball Meet the Coaches
Head Coach Mike Neu Coach Neu returns for his 2nd year as Head coach of the Vikings. Neu grew up in the Napa area and went on to play JC ball at Sacramento City College where he was named JUCO All-American and All-State. He earned a scholarship to the University of Miami and helped the Hurricanes win the 1999 College World Series and was a Collegiate All-American. Coach Neu was drafted in the 29th round of the 1999 MLB draft by the Cincinnati Reds and then in 2003 was selected in the first round of the MLB rule 5 draft by the Oakland A’s, where he was managed by Ken Macha. Neu posted a 3.64 ERA in 32 relief appearances during the 2003 season. He was traded to the Florida Marlins in 2004 and played with the LA Dodgers in 2005. In his first year as Viking Head coach, Neu lead the Vikings an impressive 34-14 record, A Big 8 Conference Championship, A Regional Championship, A Super Regional Championship and A Final Four Appearance. Coach Neu also had 3 players taken in the 2009 MLB Draft along with 14 players transferring to 4-year universities. Coach Neu lives locally with his wife and three year old

Viking Baseball Asst. Coach - Jordan Batista Coach Batista begins his fifth year with the Vikings where he works with infield play as well as strength and conditioning. J. B. played JC baseball at Laney College before playing at SF State where he received a BS in Kinesiology. He went on to earn a MS in Kinesiology from St. Mary’s College. In addition to DVC, he is also involved with the Oakland Oaks Baseball Academy. He currently teaches PE at an elementary school and hopes to someday be a Head Coach.
Asst. Coach - Kyle Gross In his second year, Coach Kyle Gross adds depth and experience as the pitching coach. Kyle was raised in Walnut Creek and pitched for Cuesta College before being drafted by the Giants in 2000 in the 5th round. He played professionally as a pitcher for 5 seasons with the San Francisco Giants and was coached by such notables as Dusty Baker and Dick Tidrow. Kyle's father, Wayne Gross, played for the A's and Orioles from 1976-1987.
Asst. Coach - Don Nelson Coach Nelson returns to the staff for his second year after spending the past 15 years as Varsity baseball coach at Piedmont High School. Nelson played baseball in high school and at Brown where he received a BA before completing his MBA at Harvard. Nelson is an investment banker, specialized in advising companies on mergers and acquisitions. He continues to play and pitch in the Men’s Senior Baseball League in the 35-and-over division. He was elected an All Star in both the Bay Area MSBL and the Tri-Valley MSBL. Nelson’s son, Matt, played baseball at Northwestern.
Asst. Coach - Andy Tarpley Coach Tarpley starts his third year as DVC hitting and third base coach. A local product, he played high school ball at San Ramon Valley HS (91) and college ball at UC Berkeley where he was a member of the College World Series team. He was signed by the Boston Red Sox as a pitcher and later played for the Reds as a third baseman. Coach Tarpley was assistant coach at SRV HS for four years and was Head Coach at Acalanes HS for three years leading them to 2 DFAL titles and an NCS championship.

Viking Baseball Conditioning Coach John Maraccini John is in his ninth year of coaching and fourth as a DVC assistant. Prior to DVC, Coach Maraccini served 4 years as a varsity assistant coach at De La Salle HS and two years at LMC. John and wife Debbie have two daughters, Nicholette and Savannah.
Assistant Coach Kevin McCarroll Coach McCarroll join the Vikings for his first year. McCarroll played baseball at Oxnard City College and later transferred to Grand View University where he was a 2 year starting shortstop erning All– Conference honors. McCarroll later coached at Grand View for one year.
Assistant Coach Francisco Ortega Coach Ortega brings lots of seeds for everyone to enjoy!!
