De DEAF2012-tentoonstelling laat werken zien die ‘relationeel’ zijn ontworpen en waarin interactie, in welke vorm dan ook, het uitgangspunt is bij het tot stand brengen van het kunstwerk. De werken zijn soms biologisch, soms technologisch van aard en vaak ook een mix van beide.
The DEAF exhibition features art works that are ‘relationally’ designed and works in which interaction, in whatever form, serves as the starting point for bringing art into being. The pieces are sometimes biological in nature, sometimes technological, and often a mix of the two.
In de twintigste eeuw heeft zich in alle vakgebieden en praktijken een verlangen doorgezet om de natuur te zuiveren, te reduceren en te abstraheren, met het doel het leven te kunnen begrijpen en vorm te geven. Dit heeft grote gevolgen gehad en de wereld ingrijpend veranderd. Momenteel ervaren we hoe beperkt dit wereldbeeld en de eruit voortkomende levensstijl eigenlijk zijn. We hoeven maar te kijken naar de toenemende milieuproblemen, de snel teruglopende biodiversiteit, de manier waarop we natuurlijke grondstoffen exploiteren, de stadsplanning, de manipulatie van voedingsgewassen en processed food, of hoe we momenteel denken over multiculturaliteit: overal zien we de verwoestende effecten van een politiek die wil zuiveren, versimpelen en abstraheren. Dit heeft ons vervreemd van het leven, dat zich juist kenmerkt door een ingewikkelde, ‘rommelige’ samenhang waarin de dingen met elkaar interactie hebben en zo steeds nieuwe variaties laten ontstaan (sociaal, cultureel, biologisch). Vitaliteit is de onstuitbare drang tot diversiteit. We weten intussen dat de processen die leven mogelijk maken en vormgeven, niet van bovenaf gecontroleerd kunnen worden. Ze werken alle in een combinatie van zelforganisatie en sturing, en ontwikkelen zich tot steeds complexere verbanden. Bescheiden daden op micro niveau werken op elkaar in en komen samen in de macrosystemen waaruit onze tastbare wereld bestaat. Daarin zien we telkens weer variatie en diversiteit ontstaan met een onuitputtelijke schoonheid. Hoe de dingen zich tot elkaar verhouden, zich met elkaar verbinden en hoe daaruit biologische, culturele, sociale, of technologische structuren, vormen en netwerken ontstaan: dat is de vraag waar kunstenaars, vormgevers en wetenschappers zich tijdens DEAF2012 op richten. Ze exploreren hoe materialen, dode en levende, alle een eigen werkingskracht hebben en zowel hun omgeving als zichzelf voortdurend veranderen. Ze zijn vitaal en laten een ‘vitale schoonheid’ zien. Schoonheid: dat woord waren we bijna vergeten in een tijd waarin alles alleen nog functioneel leek te moeten zijn.
In the twentieth century, across professions and practices, we saw a persistent desire to purify, reduce and abstract nature with the goal of understanding and shaping life. This urge has had profound consequences and radically changed the world. We are currently witnessing how limited this view of the world and its resulting lifestyle are. We need only look at our increasing environmental problems, rapidly shrinking biodiversity, exploitation of natural resources, urban planning, manipulation of edible plants and processed food, and ways of thinking about multiculturalism: everywhere, we see the devastating effects of a politics that seeks to purify, simplify and abstract. It has alienated us from life, which is characterized by a complex, ‘messy’ coherence in which things interact with each other and thereby constantly generate new variations (social, cultural and biological). Vitality is an irrepressible instinct toward diversity. We now know that the processes that make life possible and give it shape cannot be controlled from on high. All of them work through a combination of self-organization and guidance, developing increasingly complex connections. Modest activities at the micro level affect each other and come together in the macrosystems that make up the tangible world. There, time and time again, we see variation and diversity of inexhaustible beauty arising. How things relate to each other, how they connect, and how biological, cultural, social and technological structures, forms and networks subsequently arise: these are the questions artists, designers and scientists will address at DEAF2012. They’ll explore how materials, dead and alive, have their own individual effective capacities and constantly alter their environments and themselves. They are vital and display a vital beauty. Beauty: it is a word we had nearly forgotten in an age when everything merely seemed to have to be functional.
