AS IS Most jewels and watches offered at auction show signs of previous wear and may have been repaired or altered; all lots are sold on an “AS IS” basis. However, prospective buyers must inspect each lot upon which they intend to bid and rely on their own judgment or that of independent advisers.

CERTIFICATES OF AUTHENTICITY Some designers, jewellers, or manufacturers may not issue certificates or documents of authenticity upon request. Unless indicated in the catalogue, Dupuis will not be required to provide the purchaser with a certificate or record of authenticity from a designer, jeweller, or manufacturer. The failure of a designer, jeweller, or manufacturer to issue such a certificate or document will not constitute grounds to rescind the sale. Under such circumstances, Dupuis will not be held liable for expenses, costs, losses, or liabilities. WATCHES All watches should be viewed personally by prospective buyers to assess their condition. Virtually all timepieces have been repaired in the ordinary course of wearing and may contain replacement parts, and watch cases and bracelets may include after-market diamonds. All watches are sold “AS IS”. DIAMONDS AND COLOURED STONES Prospective buyers are advised that coloured gemstones and diamonds may be enhanced by various means to improve their clarity or colour. Specific treatments are standard practices within the jewellery industry. For example, the heating of coloured gemstones is an accepted enhancement method and is generally considered permanent under stable circumstances. Methods of enhancement used on various gemstones include dyeing, laser drilling, irradiating, bleaching, oiling, filling, coating, faceting and polishing. Unless the catalogue description explicitly states that the gemstone is of natural colour or clarity, prospective bidders should assume that some treatment may have been used and the enhancement may not be permanent.

BIOGRAPHIES ALETTO BROTHERS The Aletto family began making fine jewellery in Naples, Italy in 1889, their first commission being a piece of jewellery to celebrate the opening of the Eiffel Tower at the Exposition Universelle. For five generations they have specialized in invisibly set gems, as in the ruby and diamond bracelet illustrated here. Invisible setting involves cutting fine grooves into the base of the gemstones, and then ‘sliding’ them into a net-like setting below. To the naked eye, the gemstones appear to be floating, rather than being held by either claw or collet mounts. BIRKS Canada’s premier jewellery retailer was founded in Montreal in 1879 by Henry Birks, who astutely situated his shop in the heart of the city’s financial and commercial district. It quickly became the foremost destination for discerning jewellery connoisseurs. Under the directorship of Henry Birks’ eldest son, William, the company expanded across Canada, first merging with Ryrie Bros. in the early 1900s, then acquiring Ellis Bros. in the late 1920s. Merging with the highly respected firm of Dingwall’s in Manitoba, also produced stunning designs. More significant, however, was their expansion beyond the storefront. In 1894, Birks followed the lead of so many other highly successful jewellers of the era and began publishing an annual catalogue. In 1934 Birks received the Royal Warrant of Appointment and has designed jewellery for several members of Europe’s royal families, including Princess Margaret and Princess Grace of Monaco. Since 2000, a division of the company’s engagement ring business has focused on Canadian-mined diamonds. Re-branded Maison Birks in 2013, it is a national icon and leader in the Canadian jewellery industry. BUCCELLATI Mario Buccellati established the firm in Milan in 1919 and the family is known for intricate detail and unique textures and finishes. Situated next door to the famed La Scala Theatre, the house has created works of singularly dramatic form and fine craft from its earliest days. It has attracted an elite clientele of both royal and Hollywood aristocracy. In 1949, Buccellati was commissioned by Pope Pius XII to create a ruby framed religious icon for Princess Margaret, to mark the first visit of a member of the British Royal Family to the Vatican in more than four hundred years. After Mario died in 1965, his sons, Gianmaria and Luca, established new venues worldwide, providing closer access to devoted clients. At the same time, two of Mario’s other sons, Federico and Lorenzo, embarked on independent jewellery endeavours. In 2011, the two branches of the family reunited..

BULGARI Sotirios Voulgaris was born in the Balkan region of Greece in 1857, one of eleven children of a family in Epirus. Both the region and the family had a long history of silversmithing. Sensing, perhaps, the opportunities to be offered in more cosmopolitan areas, he moved to Rome in 1885, where he settled on Via Sistina, a street in the heart of a major tourist area. He established his fame by manufacturing precious silver objects, which appealed to English tourists on their Grand Tour. One successful shop led to others in major tourist areas. In 1905, with the help of his sons Costantino and Giorgio, he established new premises on prestigious Via Condotti and decided to focus on high jewellery. It remains the flagship store of the House of Bulgari. In the early twentieth century, the two brothers developed a deep interest and expertise in precious stones, jewels and watches. The period immediately after WW2 marked a significant turning point in the history of Bulgari. Giorgio and Costantino decided to create a unique style inspired by Greco-Roman classicism, the Italian Renaissance, and the nineteenth-century Roman school. By the 1950s, the bold and innovative style of Bulgari had gained success within the jet-set and movie world through their focus on jewellery mounted with precious gems. In 1977, Bulgari launched the BVLGARI BVLGARI watch, which has been a worldwide success story. The watch division of Bulgari has become an essential part of the enterprise. CARLO GIULIANO A protégé of Alessandro Castellani, Carlo Giuliano travelled from Italy to London and established a shop for Castellani. He then established his atelier in Britain. Giuliano brought his unique style to the jewellery of the late 19th century. Experimentation with enamel gained Giuliano a global reputation for the delicacy of his work. The use of black and white enamels in combination was a trademark style. Giuliano, like Castellani, experimented with ancient styles and designs from antiquity. However, Giuliano eventually focused on inspirations from the Renaissance, producing intricate jewels that are often equally beautiful on the front and the back. The next generation, Carlo’s sons, Carlo and Arthur, continued until 1914, with the tradition of designing the now highly desired jewels inspired by antiquity and the Renaissance. CARTIER “The jeweller of kings and the king of jewellers.” So said King Edward VII of the House of Cartier. For his coronation in 1902, he commissioned twenty-seven tiaras. His devotion 3 1 6

was so keen that the company was issued a Royal Warrant two years later. By then, Cartier had become a leading source of jewellery for the royal courts of Spain, Portugal, Russia and France (the House of Orleans.) The company was founded in Paris in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier, who had taken over the workshop of his master, Adolphe Picard. In turn, Louis-François’ son, Alfred, took over the business in 1874, but it was his three grandsons, Louis, Pierre and Jacques, who worked to establish the famous worldwide empire. Pierre took the Maison to New York and established it in one of the finest neo-Renaissance homes on Fifth Avenue. It is said that the purchase price for the house was one hundred dollars plus a double strand of natural pearls estimated to be worth almost one million dollars. By 1917, Cartier had established salons in London and St. Petersburg and was quickly establishing the Maison as one of the most important jewellery and watch companies in the world. Cartier coined the phrase “Never imitate, always innovate.” Their history sparkles with firsts. Cartier’s first men’s wristwatch, the original Santos, a truly exclusive limited edition, 1/1, was manufactured in 1904 to answer the needs of Louis’ friend, Alberto SantosDumont, the well-known Brazilian aviator, who needed a timepiece easier to see during flight than the standard pocket watch. A later milestone is the Tank, designed in 1917 and marketed in 1919, the watch mimicked the shape of the powerful tanks in use in WWI and is still iconic to the House. In 1911, influenced by India, Jacques Cartier created a jumble of exquisite coloured and carved gemstones and diamonds, now called “Tutti Frutti,” thereby creating one of the sensations of the Art Deco era. Perhaps their most iconic motif is the panther. It first appeared in 1914 on a lady’s watch, which was spotted like a panther’s coat in onyx and diamonds. An image of the big cat itself graced a cigarette case given by Louis Cartier to Jeanne Toussaint, the woman who became the Maison’s Director of Fine Jewellery for much of the twentieth century. The Duchess of Windsor’s panther brooch featured a cabochon sapphire that weighed 152.35 carats, and the panther perched atop it was pavé-set with diamonds and sapphires. In one last touch of outstanding opulence, the cat’s eyes were made of yellow diamonds. Cartier has sold many exceptional jewels and gems, including the blue 45.52-carat Hope Diamond, now in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian in Washington, DC. CAVELTI It was a painting of Vancouver’s harbour that lured Toni Cavelti from his home in Switzerland. He had finished a four-year

apprenticeship in goldsmithing in St. Gallen and had taken employment with a watch and jewellery company. There he felt his innate need to create was shackled. So, with little more than the tools of his trade, he immigrated to Canada in 1954. A series of inspiring partnerships occupied him until 1959, when he was finally able to express his full and dynamic creative potential with the opening of his own studio. Cavelti has taken his inspiration from a myriad of sources, ranging from the angularity of the Vancouver skyline to the works of indigenous artist, Bill Reid. His innovative and daring designs have won numerous national and international awards, including four International Diamond Awards. In 1971, to mark its centennial, the province of British Columbia chose Cavelti to design and make a necklace for Queen Elizabeth. So delighted was the Queen with this masterpiece made of locally-mined gold and jade that she insisted on thanking him personally. By the early 1990s, he had put away his own goldsmith’s tools, shifting his focus to directing the work of employees producing his designs in his large Vancouver atelier. In 1999, the company was absorbed by Birks, a successful collaboration for many years. Since Toni Cavelti’s official retirement in 2008, he has channelled his creativity from wearable beauty to admirable, oversized wirework sculptures and paintings that further showcase his skill and artistry. CHOPARD Louis-Ulysse Chopard established a watchmaking studio in 1860 in the small Swiss village of Sonvilier. He had observed other Swiss makers and had determined that it was more lucrative and efficient to make his own watch cases into which his superior movements would be placed. As with so many exclusive European jewellery and watch establishments, two successive generations ran an increasingly diverse and successful business. Eventually, the firm moved to Geneva, the fabled city of watch manufacturers. Having no interested successors, it was sold in 1963 to Karl Scheufele III, a German goldsmith and watchmaker, who with his wife, Karin and later, their two children, have elevated the House of Chopard into a modern entity. FRED Fred Samuel was born in 1908, growing up in cosmopolitan Buenos Aires to a bejewelled life: his French-born parents had emigrated to Argentina and had a business dealing in gemstones. Fred moved to France as a teenager to study jewellery and in 1936, at the age of 28, he opened a chic, jewellery boutique in equally cosmopolitan Paris. His particular preference was for pearls, and he quickly became a leading expert and proponent in the field of cultured pearls. Today, the expertise and fine

craft of the Maison shine over a broad range of high jewellery, from the whimsical penguin presented here, to tiaras which can be transformed into other pieces of jewellery. FRED, Paris, created that famous ruby and diamond necklace, unforgettable in the movie, ‘Pretty Woman’. GRAFF Laurence Graff’s life amidst diamonds began at the age of 15 when he was apprenticed to a diamond dealer in Hatton Garden, the fabled diamond district of London. By 18, he had set up his own company. Through an artful combination of courage and imagination (and the brilliant business mind of his grandmother!), he inspired a wealthy and influential clientele to entrust him with their patronage, as well as their friendship. He has handled more significant diamonds than any other diamantaire of our time, often sourcing stones directly from the mine. His name graces some of the most spectacular diamonds of recent decades, the latest being the Graff Venus, a flawless 118.78carat heart-shaped gem, the largest of its type in the world. His focus has always been on unique designs and timeless beauty, as may easily be seen on these two pages. GUBELIN The House of Gübelin began as a watchmaker’s shop in Lucerne, founded by Mauritz Breitschmid in 1854. Young Eduard Gübelin was taken on as his apprentice. In 1886, master and apprentice formed a partnership; that same year, Eduard married Bertha, Mauritz’s daughter. In the 1920s, the Maison established a jewellery atelier, in addition to a gemmological lab that would ensure the quality of all the gemstones they sold. Their discerning clientele began in Switzerland, and also grew in the rest of Europe and internationally. During the 2000s, they expanded the Gem Labs with branches in Hong Kong and New York. A reputation for expertise, particularly in coloured gemstone certification, allied with the passionate creativity evident in their finely crafted jewels, remains as stellar as it did over 167 years ago. Now into its sixth generation, Gübelin is still family-run. ILIAS LALAOUNIS Ilias Lalaounis was born in Athens in 1920, eventually becoming a part of the third generation of goldsmiths and watchmakers in his family. He had studied economics and law at university and later joined his uncle’s jewellery business, Zolotas, as an apprentice goldsmith and in 1941 took over the firm; his fascination with his country’s history inspired him to explore the re-interpretation of ancient Greek techniques and designs, especially the symbolic ram’s and lion’s heads and the mythological chimeras. The death of his uncle in the 1960s resulted in his striking out on his own, opening his first shop at the foot of the Acropolis. Lalaounis found far more beauty in 18 and 22 karat gold, which he called “the most 3 1 7

human material,” than in gemstones. His four daughters, Aikaterini, Demetra, Maria and Ioanna preserve that passion today. They manage and direct jewellery production and international sales and also operate the Ilias Lalaounis Jewellery Museum in Athens. KARL STITTGEN In the 1950s, jeweller and goldsmith Karl Stittgen began his career designing and making contemporary jewellery in Vancouver. Over several decades he created an original and distinctive body of work inspired by the organic forms of nature and the clean lines of contemporary west coast architecture. Creations of gold, platinum, gemstones, pearls, ancient coins and artifacts earned him loyal customers and critical acclaim during what some observers have called the golden age of design in Vancouver. In 2009, Stittgen received the British Columbia Creative Achievement Award of Distinction. LUCAS The Canadian Art Group has recognized Gabriel Lucas Limitée as “the most commercially successful Artistic Jeweller in Canada’s history.” Gabriel Lucas moved from Paris to Canada in 1929 and opened a jewellery studio in Montreal. By 1940, employing a workforce of up to 50 artisans, he had established a business that attracted Montreal society for its innovative and beautifully crafted jewellery. His equally talented son, Roger, was one of the few Canadian designers invited to show jewellery at New York’s Cartier store for an exhibition featuring his space-age, modern aesthetic. Their work continues to be sought after for its quality and originality. MARINA B. In 1976, Marina Bulgari left the famed Maison long-established by her family to strike out boldly with her own creative vision. Her background in high jewellery gave her the confidence to develop her own gem cut, and to rework several others. Her works are opulent, rendered with a timeless elegance. She remains one of the most important female designers in the world. MAUBOUSSIN Established in 1827, Mauboussin found increased popularity among discerning buyers and experts when they won a medal at the 1878 Exposition Universelles in Paris. In 1925, at the Exposition des Arts Décoratifs, the jury awarded the Maison the grand prize for their innovative Art Deco designs. PATEK PHILIPPE On May 1st, 1839, businessman Antoine Patek and watchmaker Francois Czapek joined forces to found Patek, Czapek & Cie in Geneva. In 1844, Patek met the French watchmaker, Jean-Adrien Philippe. They were attending the French Industrial Exposition in Paris, where

the latter presented his pioneering stem winding and setting system—the first keyless winding system for pocket watches. It earned Philippe a gold medal. A year later, he became the firm’s chief watchmaker, and in 1851 he became a full partner. Patek Philippe & Cie was born. In 1932, the company was purchased by two brothers, Charles and Jean Stern, owners of a dial factory in Geneva. Since then, ‘Patek Philippe S.A.’ has remained a family-owned firm. Through two families, multiple generations, and several name changes, there is an unbroken line spanning more than one hundred and eighty years. This longevity is proudly echoed in the ancient Calatrava Cross, symbol of the Maison, and also in one of the most famous catchphrases in advertising: “You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation.” Patek Philippe S.A. has produced some of the most valuable and complicated watches ever sold, recognized as much for their beauty as for their superior quality and dependability. It carefully limits the number of timepieces produced each year in order to ensure that the firm’s reputation for quality is never compromised. It is, as it always has been, one of the most highly-respected names in horology. PIAGET In 1874, Georges Édouard Piaget started his first workshop on the family farm in a small Swiss village of La Côte-aux-Fées. It was a way of making money during the long, unproductive winter months. As it grew, the firm created such high-precision movements that they were chosen for the most prestigious brands of timepieces. This remained the purpose of the firm until Georges Piaget’s son, Timothée, expanded production to include their own brand of timepieces. In 1943, the company’s first trademark was registered, and in due course, the next generation proudly and effectively broadened the growth and scope of the Maison world-wide. In 1957, Piaget began to design and build ultra-thin movements, and by 1960 it was ready to launch the world’s thinnest self-winding movement, measuring only 2.3 mm in thickness. Altiplano, Polo, Dancer, Possession - these are just some of the names that evoke the playful, adventurous and luxurious nature of the brand. Piaget has long been a company that focuses as much on fashion as on quality in its timepieces. They were the first to decorate their watches with precious and semi-precious stones, using lapis lazuli, tiger’s eye and jade to create timepieces of unique beauty. To the same end, the jewellery line, begun in the 1960s, was envisaged as complementary to the firm’s watch designs. ROLEX In 1905, at the age of 24, Hans Wilsdorf founded a company in London with Alfred Davis. Known as Wilsdorf & Davis, they

specialized in imported Swiss watches and watch parts made by various manufacturers and sold these goods to British jewellers and watchmakers - generally pocket watches were still favoured by gentlemen, and the less common ‘wristlet’ watch, was acceptable to women. The forward-thinking Wilsdorf was about to change the course of watch-making history. While most watches in that era lacked precision time-keeping, Wilsdorf was convinced that they could, and would, become reliable and elegant, whether safely tucked into a pocket or daringly worn on the wrist. To assure his clients of the reliability of his timepieces, he equipped each with especially precise movements manufactured for him by a Swiss watchmaking company in Bienne. The relentless quest for chronometric precision rapidly led to success. In 1910, a Rolex wristwatch was the first to receive the Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision, granted by the Official Watch Rating Centre in Bienne. In 1914, Kew Observatory in Great Britain awarded a Rolex wristwatch a class “A” precision certificate, a distinction that had, until then, been reserved exclusively for marine chronometers. From that date, the Rolex wristwatch has become synonymous with precision. Rolex moved to Geneva, a city renowned internationally for watchmaking. Montres Rolex SA was registered in Geneva in 1920 and has since become one of the most widely recognized brands in the world. STERLÉ Pierre Sterlé was only ten years old when his father died in action in WWI. Pierre might have followed his father into an illustrious banking career; instead, he was sent to live with an uncle who was a jeweller in Paris. He excelled in this new pursuit and opened his own establishment in 1934 at the age of 29. For four years, he made jewellery for some of the most notable jewellery ateliers in Paris: Boucheron, Chaumet and Ostertag amongst them. He began taking private commissions in 1939, and by 1945 had sufficient confidence to open his own atelier in the Avenue de l’Opera, as close to the celebrated luxury of the Place Vendôme as possible. Its location on the third floor of a building suited his sense of exclusivity. He was very particular about the clientele he wished to attract. It did not include mere passers-by, attracted by the wealth in a shop window. Sterlé’s work is redolent of his love of nature and imbued with the movement which animates every part of it. Always experimenting to the limits of possibility, he invented a new method of working gold called fil d’ange. The author, Collette, was so taken by it that she included a delighted description of it in her work, calling it “chain-knit gold.” His noble clientele included King Farouk and the wife of the Maharaja of Baroda and other discerning socialites who admired Sterlé’s talents even prior to his winning multiple De Beers Diamond awards. He began an associa3 1 8

tion in 1976 with the House of Chaumet, who hired him as a technical consultant, a role he held until his untimely death in 1978. TIFFANY & CO. In 1837, Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young opened a small stationery and gift shop in Lower Manhattan. The firm became Tiffany & Co. in 1853 when Charles Tiffany took the lead and increased its focus to include fine jewellery and their much-admired sterling silver items. It became the first American company to be awarded a prize for excellence in silverware at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1867. Somewhat ahead of his time, Tiffany & Co. began publishing an annual catalogue called the Blue Book in 1845, which allowed customers across the country to purchase from the New York base. This, together with lucrative contracts to supply surgical instruments to the Union Army during the Civil War, strengthened and enriched the company. By 1870 they were able to acquire much larger and more impressive premises closer to the heart of Manhattan. The New York Times referred to it as “a palace of jewels.” The quality of its wares earned Tiffany & Co. a long list of medals for excellence in Europe, but two decisions attracted remarkable press and public interest. The first was the purchase in 1878 of a 287.42-carat rough fancy yellow diamond from the Kimberley mine in South Africa, which was cut into a stunning 128.54-carat polished gem boasting 82 facets. Named the Tiffany Diamond and made into a necklace, it has been loaned to only four women, one of whom famously starred in the iconic movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Audrey Hepburn. At the Academy Awards of 2019, the Best Original Song winner, Lady Gaga, wore the necklace and matching ear pendants. It resides, now as it did then, in the Tiffany New York flagship store. The second critically important decision came in 1887—purchasing a significant portion of the French Crown jewels at auction in Paris. Tiffany’s renown for handling high-quality diamonds was thus firmly established. On the death of his father, Louis Comfort Tiffany took over the directorship. The company continued to provide the American military with a series of service medals, even as it maintained its production of fine jewellery and domestic luxury items. Thus enriched, it moved again to purpose-built premises within Manhattan. Finally, in 1940, it settled at 727 Fifth Avenue, where it continues today. A focus on innovation has always been critical to the success and appeal of the company’s creations. In 1886, Charles Tiffany invented the Tiffany setting, in which a diamond is held in six prongs high above the band—a dramatic change from the traditional design. This setting allowed more light to enter the stone, thus adding significantly to its brilliance. Many notable designers have also been brought in-house to energize its imagination: Jean Schlumberger

in 1956; Elsa Peretti in 1974; and Paloma Picasso in 1980. VAN CLEEF & ARPELS Van Cleef & Arpels has always been inspired by the unique creative energy of love, for it was love that brought the Maison into being. Towards the end of the 19th century, a young girl named Estelle Arpels—the daughter of a dealer in precious stones—met a boy named Alfred Van Cleef, the son of a stone-cutter. Their union led them to the founding of the Maison of Van Cleef & Arpels. In 1906, Alfred set up in business with Estelle’s brother Charles, a talented salesman who managed their new boutique in Paris’ Place Vendôme. Two years later, Estelle’s brother Julien joined the firm; a third brother, Louis, joined them in 1912. Over the years that followed, the name Van Cleef & Arpels became synonymous with the most exquisite jewellery in the world. The romance that brought Estelle and Alfred together lives on through the many enchanting love stories of the Maison. Van Cleef & Arpels remains one of the most desired names in jewellery, noted for many innovations in design, manufacturing and gem-setting techniques which changed the jewellery landscape and the way we think of jewellery.
