editor’s P note

robably shouldn’t admit that before this introduction was initiated, I typed, ‘Editor’s Note for Inaugural Magazine’ and several variations of that fragment in the Google search bar. Probably shouldn’t disclose that I sat, staring at the laptop, for a considerable amount of time before arched fingers were placed on familiar keys, contemplating where and how to begin. Surely, I shouldn’t reveal that this is yet another ‘wild and crazy dream’ that my brother and I have been sitting on for years, and were, somewhat, hesitant in creating but…ehh what the heck?! Transparency, right? Yes, there was trepidation. Yes, there was doubt. But yes, there was action. And, in like fashion, yes, this is our first issue!

Dedicated to outlining influencers, positioned to expose and celebrate, and presented to surprise, as well as

inform—in a dupp&swat kind of way— THE GARMENT DISTRICT, our inaugural presentation, promises to straddle the notions of nostalgia and novelty. And, while there’s pressure to deliver an interesting perspective—self-imposed, of course—I assure you that this colorful square is anything but…‘square.’ While flipping through the variety of spreads, filled with favorites, first-times, food, and fashion, be on the lookout for our SPREAD logo.

is intended for you to do just that. But before you dive in, head first, a round of applause for the team that made SPREAD pop! Given less than a month’s notice, magic was made! Hustle happened! Moments materialized! Shoots were shot! Records were reviewed! Food was flashed! In other words, they did that…

The first five readers to find it and tag us on Instagram (@TheSpreadMag) will be rewarded with a ‘Blast from the Past.’ Yep, sorry, that’s all folks! No, really, that’s all that can be revealed at this time; just make sure you’re one of the five. *chuckling* Let’s move on, shall we? Cool! To our readers, know that we do this for you and the content found within SPREAD

Why It’s EASY… •

Versatile:

Why They’re TRICKY…. •

o The pieces can be worn with casual and or formal attire. •

NOTED NECKLACES

o Less is more when it comes to wearing the necklaces. Avoid gaudy bracelets, rings and earrings while wearing the necklace.

Statement Pieces: o The necklaces ARE your statement pieces. You can shave a few minutes off your prep time because your necklace will create your look. Affordable: o You won’t have to clean out your account to purchase the pieces.

Accessory Overload:

Plan of ATTACK…. •

Make each necklace available in a variety of colors and lengths.

Prices will vary per item. The more elaborate and detailed the pieces are, the higher the price. (Not sure about the wording)

Correct Wardrobe Pieces: o Although the pieces can be worn with casual and formal clothes, there are certain tops that shouldn’t be worn with the necklaces. Wearing shirts and dresses with draped necklines will take away from your statement piece.

What’s your birth given name? Jamar Caldwell How did you get your nickname, Bleusol? It came from the name of a prior business I owned, ‘Bleusol Management.’ Of course, people started calling me Bleu and, because it looked good on written material, I never corrected them. What have you spread recently? LOL, what? Let me think… The last thing was apple butter on toast from Zada Jane’s. Where are you originally from? I am a Charlotte Native, BORN AND RAISED. Have you assisted with the development of Charlotte’s art scene? And, if so, how? Absolutely! And, I often hear that my way of communicating, both effectively and efficiently, is greatly appreciated. Apparently, ‘new’ photographers are slow with corresponding with their clients—at least, that’s the word on the street. Meanwhile, I’m always willing to 28

give knowledge and build lasting relationships. If photography wasn’t your form of expression, what occupation would we find you? I’d be a vocalist. Whatever the career path, though, it’s a must that I express myself artistically. In the beginning, of your career, who inspired you? And, now that you are seasoned, who/what continues to inspire your creations? Honestly, I didn’t plan on becoming a photographer. It happened rather quickly as one day, I lost my job, the next, I bought a camera and the rest is history. Admittedly, Moye initially inspired my moves and now, I am intrigued with the works of Derek Blanks, Chase Jarvis and a young guy in Charlotte, Joshua Galloway. What do you spread on your hot dogs? A good hot dog needs mustard, ketchup and slaw. Would you rather spread LOVE or PEACE? As cliché as it may seem, LOVE!

DEMARCO GETS OUT THE CAR, DRAPED WITH DESIGNER BAGS AND A CONFUSED FACE. UNSURE OF WHERE WE WERE HEADED AND WHAT HE ‘SIGNED UP’ FOR, I THEN EXPLAINED WHILE HE, SIMPLY, NODDED. WE WALK INTO DUPP&SWAT AND WHILE HE LOOKS AROUND, TAKING IT ALL IN, I PREPARE AND SCARF DOWN THE REST OF MY BREAKFAST BISCUIT. VIA SMALL TALK, I LEARN THAT HE’S 6’3”ISH, A GRADUATE OF WINSTON SALEM STATE UNIVERSITY, AND JACKSONVILLE, NC RAISED. THE WELL-DRESSED DEMARCO TAKES A SEAT AND I START SNAPPING. WITH EACH FRAME HE BECOMES MORE AND MORE COMFORTABLE WITH HIS FRONT AND CENTER ROLE. AFTER A FEW MAGICAL MOMENTS ARE CAPTURED, I GRAB MY IPAD IN ANTICIPATION OF LEARNING MORE ABOUT THIS GUY.

WHAT IS YOUR FULL NAME?

DEMARCO MATTHEWS BUT EVERYONE CALLS ME MARCO.

32

WHAT DOES ART MEAN TO YOU?

THAT YOU CAN DO WHAT YOU WANT; THAT THERE’S NO RIGHT OR WRONG ANSWER. . 33

DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU’VE IMPACTED CHARLOTTE’S ART SCENE? NOT ON A LARGE SCALE, JUST YET. HOWEVER, IT’S MY SECOND HOME AND IT’S JUST A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE I DO.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO SPREAD ON YOUR HOT DOG? MUSTARD. LOTS OF IT. WOULD YOU EVER LIKE TO COLLAB WITH A CELEBRITY? NAH, NOT REALLY. BUT, I’M UP FOR DOING A PROJECT OR COLLECTION SHOWCASING THEM AS A FEATURE.

WHAT IS THE MEANING BEHIND YOUR IMAGES? THIS FEATURED COLLECTION IS ENTITLED ‘DIRTY AMBITION$’ AND IS UP FOR INTERPRETATION. 34

WHY PILLOWS? TRUTHFULLY, FOR VARIETY. I WANT PIECES TO BE COLLECTIBLE, FILLING A MULTITUDE OF SPACES AND ROOMS. WHETHER A BEDROOM, LIVING ROOM OR WOrkSPACE, MY PIECES WILL COMPLEMENT. MARCO HAS FUTURE ENDEAVORS THAT INCLUDE A SHOWROOM AND A KICKSTARTER FOR A FILM PROJECT. THEY ARE SURE TO LEAVE A MARK AND INSPIRE THE ART WORLD, LOCALLY AND BEYOND. STAY IN THE LOOP AND CHECK FOR HIM ON IG AND TWITTER AT @BLAMEMARCO.

elcome, welcome, welcome! You are the new, privileged readers of some of the most random shit you will ever lay eyes upon. You want something educational? I, then, suggest that you read some highly-esteemed, stuffy, over-edited, political-agenda-having, tight-rope-walking, BS magazine column. In other words, this ain’t it! Here, I’m saying what should be said, what isn’t said, and what you—the intelligent ones—think! Follow me.

NOTE ONE: When did we, as a Don’t agree with something I said? See note one! I kid, I kid. Whether you agree, disagree or just want to chime in, contact me at SPREAD@duppandswat.com, ATTN: SPREAD FOR DUPP.

We will be legalizing weed soon—in part, because of my vote! (Note to self: finish this comment later.)

NOTE FIVE: Why can’t people work together? What

is built in us that forces us to cringe when others are successful? No matter the circumstance, why do we wish failure upon others? Yeh, I know he or she went to school and they deserve this but... Yeh, I see that he/ she is taking care of their family and needs this but… Yeh, I know that they’ve been grinding for years and ‘dues’ are about to be paid but…I STILL hope they fail. Truth is, whether you fall in the category of being selfish, jealous, and/or a snake, we are better fighting and building together. I, for one, believe there is still hope for us.

I hope your toes fall off!!

society, become so damn sensitive? You can’t be honest about anything anymore! Wanna know how I know? Just three seconds ago someone ‘clutched their pearls’ because I said, damn, in a magazine that is now circulating our lovely city. Do yourself a favor and realize that people are going to make statements that you may not like but as long as it’s not about family, mainly your mother, brush it off. I will not apologize for a joke, a comment, or a belief and you shouldn’t either.

*seriously

NOTE TWO: So, you buy fake sneakers, intentional-

it t , a a e e d d i i y m s a w . . . d ce

NOTE FOUR:

ly? I hope your toes fall off!! Are you a reseller of such ‘wannabes?’ It is my hope that you can’t move anything, ever! Show love for the game and true sneakerheads by buying and rocking legit shoes. While I’m at it, I don’t understand why people buy sneakers and don’t wear them?! Lemme help you out, SPREAD that shoe open, like some lips, and insert. #SeeWhatIDidThere?

NOTE THREE: It’s no secret that I’m a Bear’s fan and we’re going to molly-whop, (yes, that is a word), the shit out of the Panthers this year. Come get some!

40

NOTE SIX: Life is short!! Do NOT allow the

opinions of others to fuel your regrets when you’re 50 or, hell, even 40. As 3000 would say, ‘All of them will have an opinion/ but y’all know what y’all can do with them/ but if you’re unsure, I’ll take you on tour/ to a place you can stick that in.’ Pursue your purpose!

NOTE SEVEN: I hate doing laundry! I need a FREE,

fairy-clothes-washer to swing on by and get me right, on a monthly basis. Oh, I’ll take a fairy-grass-cutter and you know what, fuck it, throw in a fairy-bill-payer too!

NOTE EIGHT: What am I listening to and what sneaks

am I wearing while composing this spectacular piece of literature? Ab-Soul, These Days; Ghostface Killah, Iron Man. And, the Birmingham Baron 1’s are looking up at me. Hey, mix the old with the new and you’ll stay relevant.

TREND BRAIDED CROWN STYLE: Crown Braid To achieve the coveted crown braid this Fall, follow these steps: 1. Part your hair in the middle, separating it into two sections. Secure one side while you work with the other, so strands don’t become mixed up. 2. Take the loose side and start at the nape of the neck, splitting it into three strands. 3. Begin the braid, crossing the strands underneath each other instead of over. Work your way around the side of the head, keeping the braid fairly tight. (If desired, loosen the braid for more of an effortless look.)

4. Work across the top of the forehead until you finish the braid—securing the end with an elastic tie. Allow this braided number to hang while you complete the other side. 5. With the opposite side, start at the TOP of the head, instead at the nape of the neck. Split the hair into three parts and complete the same braid as before—working around the side of the head, finishing near the nape. 6. With each braid tied with an elastic, wrap them, as desired, around the head and secure with pins. Be sure to tuck the tails underneath the braid to hide them.

TRUE. TRUE. “Washing my face in hot water makes it cleaner…”

FAC T S We are myth busting on all things skincare and beauty!

“If I exfoliate daily, my skin will age slower...”

Actually, you should wash in lukewarm water. Washing your face in ‘too hot’ or ‘too cold’ temperatures can cause irritation, especially if you are prone to acne. Further, it strips natural oils.

Or, you won’t have any skin left! While exfoliation is necessary, err on the side of caution—don’t overdo it! It’s recommended that you choose a day, once a week, to exfoliate at night. Doing so, sloughs off dead skin cells and promotes new cell turnover.

“Expensive makeup is better than inexpensive “I don’t wear makeup because it causes options...” acne...” You can spend all your coins if you want to but most of us know that’s not true. Quiet as kept, some cosmetic brands that you spend your hard-earned money on manufacture a few of your favorite drugstore options! We all have our favorites but conduct research and perform a little trial-and-error testing. Success can occur with ‘less than $20’ brands.

46

While it may be true that excessive amounts of makeup clogs pores, there is no medical research to support the statement: makeup causes acne. It’s true, there are certain ingredients that may cause inflammation or irritate skin but that is unique to the person’s skin type. Tell you what, wear a great primer and live a little!

ALEXANDRA BUT LER Q: What do you like to SPREAD? A: I like to spread peanut butter

on my PB&J sandwich!!!

Q: What profession other than yours, would you like to attempt? A: I want to be a choreographed dancer so badly; hip hop dance, though. I watch choreographers like Sean Bankhead, all the time, and wish I had that much coordination. I can booty dance, but not anything choreographed. My memory is shot! Q: Favorite Curse Word?

A: I would tell my younger self to STOP using that damn NC45 concealer on my brows. I eventually stopped, but I would’ve told myself to do it a long time ago. Q: What’s one thing that our readers may be surprised to know? A: I hate wearing makeup! Ok, well, maybe not hate but I would prefer not to. I like how my skin looks and, frankly, I don’t want to put anything on it. Especially after doing makeup all day, when it comes time to ‘get my life,’ I’ll pass. It’s just too much hassle to maintain and then, of course, the process of removing it. I’m over it! Q: If you were a superhero, what would your powers be? A: I would blink and things I need done, would be taken care of in an instant. Say that I needed my brushes washed… ’BLINK’…and, it is so. I need to travel to LA? No problem…’BLINK’…and, I’m already there…

A. FUCKKKKKK or BITCH Q: What are your top three beauty products? A: Bobbi Brown Lip Balm, Milani Secret Concealer (in the pot), and Maybelline Ultra Liner liquid Eyeliner

Q: What is your social media poison and why? A: I love Instagram because I heart pictures! And, with the video feature, I get to see a lot more.

Q: What beauty advice would you give your younger self? To book an appointment with Alex email: alexandrabutlermua@yahoo.com IG and Twitter: @themuaalex FB: www.facebook.com/alexandrabutlermua

Munched On by: Cedric Isaac and Dion Galloway In this edition of I’d Eat It, the munch crew visited a few well-known restaurants and detoured into a hidden gem, as well. Though we hope you’re able to find the time to visit these establishments to form your own opinion, feel free to use our ‘after-tastes’ as a starting point. Overall: Great food with an interesting location, if that’s what you call it. Charlotte’s China Town, there are ducks hanging in the window and, ladies and gentlemen, that’s about as real as it gets! Authentic to their roots, there is little English spoken at this establishment. We wouldn’t have any problems eating here, at least, once a week as you definitely get the bang for the buck. FULL baguette sandwiches ARE $4!! We repeat $4! Beware of the pot holes, however—they are real.

Overall: This place is interesting…well, not really. Truthfully, it’s one we should’ve skipped. We’re not fans of the food and the staff was fairly disengaged. This establishment will NOT get a Round2!

Overall: The hype surrounding this place had us prepared for pure bliss. Unfortunately, we’re jumping off that train. Little Village sports a standard menu with not much excitement. Not much more to share other than, it’s average! *Sigh*

Cedric Isaac holds no reservations regarding what he will eat, trying anything and everything— literally! What kind of person eats hog head cheese? Yeh, this guy does! Cedric represents those that are more concerned with presentation. He’s curious about how the dishes look and how they are prepared. A chef in his own right, the man’s palate is trained to point out the most subtle seasonings. Dion Galloway will eat just about anything, and we do mean anything. Put it in front of him and watch it get devoured. Fresh from the womb, he was able to break breast milk down to a science. In other words, the man was born a foodie! His point of view represents the consumer who wants great taste at a great price, mixed with a little adventure.

SPREAD Magazine Stylist via IG

You just received an exciting phone call from your boyfriend, saying that he wants to take you out. You have no idea what he has up his sleeve; all you know is that you need to look your best and you have to be ready in, exactly, 30 minutes!!! OMG, it’s Saturday afternoon and you just got home from the gym, girl, what are you going to wear? Winner: @StylesByAnishNicole

#SpreadMagStylist was the hashtag used to put our fashion-forward, Instagram followers up to the ‘Styling Challenge.’ Having suggested three scenarios in which they were to create looks and then post on IG using the aforementioned hashtag, below are our favorites.

kosi, who are you? what word(s) describes you?

are you afraid of anything?

Fun. Sometimes I can be mischievous at home because I have an older sister and younger brother to keep off my back.

I’m afraid of snakes and spiders because some are poisonous.

what do you like to do for fun? Draw. being that this magazine is called SPREAD, I have to ask, what do you like to spread? I like to spread peanut butter and jelly on my dog’s nose. I think it’s funny because he tries to lick it off. He’s hilarious.

SHORT

what’s your favorite word?

SWEET

Fun because I’m a fun and intelligent girl. (NOTE: she’s used the word ‘fun’ three times, already. I suppose there’s got to be some truth.)

JUST WHAT LITTLE GIRLS ARE MADE OF.

what makes you so fun?

AND TO THE POINT

My creativity. I enjoy creating stuff, especially when I’m bored.

I would possess the elements of earth like water, air and fire. what’s your favorite creation thus far? The rainbow headband. I love its color and that it’s great for spring and summer. But, truthfully, you can wear it in any season. Isn’t that what people are doing these days?

“It’s a lot like la la land and it’s, definitely, made out of sugar.“

do you create items for girls, mostly? If so, do you see yourself ever creating for men? Yes, only for women. I’m not very good at drawing men’s clothes. It’s too involved. what did you eat for breakfast? I ate grits and eggs, washing it down with orange juice. where do you find inspiration? what made you decide to start creating and designing at such a young age? When reading a magazine, I saw this dress and thought, ‘Wow, that’s really beautiful. I can do that.’ Later that evening, I started drawing.

69

if you were a superhero, what powers would you possess?

does creating make you happy? Yes. And, the fact that my mom is by my side whenever I need her. how long have you been designing? I’ve been designing for 2 years. I think I was seven when I started. aside from accessories for the hair, what else do you see yourself designing in the future?

Clothes, shoes and jewelry, for sure. what’s your favorite place? It’s a lot like la la land and it’s, definitely, made out of sugar. It has plenty of color and right in the middle, are tons of rides. Right now, this place exists, only, in my head. are you still being a child? hanging out with friends, attending slumber parties and such? Yes, of course.

TRIBAL As a wardrobe stylist, I have to look the part at all times. No exceptions! Seriously, lets’ be honest, appearance is everything when you’re in an industry that markets and sells apparel. Today is just one of those days and as much as I would rather lie in bed all day, there’s a laundry list of things to do that awaits. But before I begin tackling that, what am I going to wear on a day such as this? Though the temperature is a little warmer than typical September days, I’ll be simple, cute and comfy; too much running around to be overly done. Now, what will it be? That, is the question! Hmm… After careful consideration, I’ve decided on a pair of linen, wide leg pants tinted olive green, a white racer-back tank layered with a colorfully-graphic, knee-length cape, and a pair of mustard colored wedges. To complete the look, I’ve added a tribal-inspired necklace that was purchased from Aldo last week. As the necklace is plenty bold, pairing it with triangular-shaped studs, a watch and sleek gold bangle does the trick. After filling Onyx, one of my black Prada’s, with the day’s essentials, consider me dressed! Alright, here goes nothing…first stop, Starbucks!

METALLIC Tonight is the grand opening of my bestie’s martini lounge, Roxxi, and as it’s the talk of the city, everyone’s adrenaline is on one hundred, thousand, trillion! Her dream has, finally, come true and her diligence and hard work has paid off, tremendously. Not only will her family and friends be in attendance but her celebrity clientele will be present, as well; and, she’s thrilled. I know the past few weeks have been chaotic for her and while she hasn’t been able to do anything outside of ensuring that the lounge is ready for le’ grand opening, I, in BFF mode, took matters into my own hands. One day while engaged in a little retail therapy, I wandered into Aldo and purchased a metallic, tear-drop necklace for the occasion. When I saw it and it saw me, I had to go for it. Hey, it was the only one! Courtney is ‘different’ or at least that’s how people describe her sense of style so I know she has the perfect dress to complement this neck candy. And, if not, luckily her best friend, moi, is a life saver and stylist, so either way, she’s going to be on! Matter of fact, her full-length, fitted, vintage find will be perfect. It’s the color of froth, embedded with gold shimmer and strapless. Tonight, she is going to be killing and, rightfully, so… it’s a celebration bishes! You coming, right?!

AYYYYYEEE!!

FaShun

can go from the “Iwhite house to

the trap house. WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU WANT?

I am FaShun. I live, eat, and breathe this every day and am constantly working, trying to build my brand. I just want to be successful. HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS? Loving what you do and not feeling like you need to work, not feeling like it is work. I think that I am successful now but still want growth. I don’t look at this like a job. IS THIS EASY FOR YOU? You don’t know me, you know my IG! From the outside looking in, it looks like it’s easy; you know, I’m just hanging around celebrities all day, playing in fabric but it’s a lot more involved. It’s not easy but I wouldn’t want to do anything else.

86 84

STILL WORKING ON THAT? I was working on a boy’s line. It’s now on the back burner because I’m working on an African American t-shirt line. In the eight years I’ve been styling, I’ve found it hard to find a shirt that represents us. So, that’s something I would like to start offering.

IF YOU WERE A SUPERHERO, WHAT POWERS WOULD YOU POSSESS? OMG! I would make everyone fabulous—outfit and all. Like, when I see someone and they’re looking horrible, with the snap of my fingers, suddenly there’s Cinderella. I’m here to switch it all up.

SO, GRAPHIC TEES?

IN YOUR DOWN TIME, WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU?

Yes, graphic tees. You may see someone with shaved sides or locs. You’ll see someone with a small waist, big butt, big beautiful eyes—just a representation of us and not that little, skinny girl with long straight hair. That’s not us. My line will showcase someone shapely and gorgeous. These days, it’s more common to see black girls on the cover of Vogue and in makeup commercials, so black is the new black. I want to push that!

What’s that?! Nah, when I do have the opportunity, I’m content lying in bed, watching HGTV. I’m obsessed with ‘before and after’ shows. A lot of people don’t know this but before I began wardrobe styling, I used to decorate part time.

ARE THERE CERTAIN BRANDS THAT YOU FLOCK TO? PERSONALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY?

Yes, closet organizations are my therapy; I lose myself—focusing on the end results. I anticipate how the client is going to walk in and see their belongings in their proper place. I look at the big picture and know that they’ll be able to get dressed and not stress about it.

Yes, I am obsessed with some of the cheaper brands. I love high-end shoes but am a Zara, H&M and Forever 21 kind of girl. I can mix them with other brands but I am, literally, obsessed with Zara. I wear something from there every other day.

I IMAGINE THAT EXPERIENCE HELPS YOU WITH CLOSET ORGANIZATIONS?

WHAT DID YOU EAT FOR BREAKFAST?

NAME THREE FALL MUST-HAVES?

Nothing, other than hot tea around 10am.

That great leather jacket with the biker look! I’m still obsessed with leather leggings and, of course, you must have that killer boot—whether it’s an ankle boot or an option that comes to the knee. I’m a heel girl and I think every chica needs that 3-4 inch heel, though. No flat boots!

IS THERE ANYONE YOU WOULD LIKE TO WORK WITH THAT, AT PRESENT, YOU HAVEN’T?

ANY UP-AND-COMING DESIGNERS WE SHOULD LOOK OUT FOR? I’m still working on that as I have a hard time finding designs that display great quality. There are a lot of people sending me stuff and, yes, it may be cute on the picture but when I get it in my hands, the quality is questionable. I do love LVISH brand (pronounced Lavish), however. She’s here, in NC, and focuses on menswear; I’ve had the opportunity to use quite a bit of her merchandise. For the most part, though, the majority of items that come my way, don’t impress. So, I’m still searching.

Ok, so I’ve always been slightly obsessed with Rihanna and Mary J Blige. They portray girls that like to have fun with their wardrobe; they’re completely comfortable with taking chances. Whether it’s wrong or right, they aren’t concerned with what others think. DO YOU HAVE A SIGNATURE LOOK? No, I can go from the white house to the trap house.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE IG BOUTIQUES? They should be more creative as they all look alike. They carry the same patterns, the same leggings and the same bodycon dress. And, if people choose to have an IG boutique, they need to switch up the style; it just all looks the same. Truthfully, hopefully, it’s a phase. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE CURSE WORD? PHOTOGRAPHY: MICHELLE LYONS VENUE: DUPP&SWAT

Fuck! When someone pisses me off, I flip stuff off real quick. That word is good for any occasion, actually. It’s quite versatile.

FOR A YEAR AND A HALF, THE GOOD FOLKS AT STASH ON TRADE HAVE BEEN PUSHING SNEAKERS AND PROVIDING THE QUEEN CITY WITH A LITTLE FLVOR. FOR THOSE THAT DON’T KNOW, JEEZY AND I JUMPED RIGHT INTO IT.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SNEAKER? RIGHT NOW, THE HOTTEST SNEAKERS I HAVE MY EYES ON ARE THE ‘WHAT THE KD’S’. WE DON’T HAVE THEM AT THE MOMENT BUT I’M TRYING TO GET MY HANDS ON A FEW PAIRS. BUT, AS FAR AS WHAT’S IN THE STORE, MY FAVORITE SNEAKER WOULD HAVE TO BE THE VARSITY RED 2’S. IT’S A FLY KICK! IT’S AN EVERYDAY SHOE, AN ALL PURPOSE SHOE, IN MY OPINION. YOU CAN WEAR IT TO A SOCIAL GATHERING OR EVEN A FORMAL EVENT, IF YOU WANT. IT’LL ADD A DIFFERENT SWAG TO THE TUX. I’M THAT KIND OF GUY SO I’D DEFINITELY DO IT.

NOT TOO MANY WOULD SAY THE 2’S BECAUSE THEY SAY IT LOOKS LIKE COMBAT BOOTS, NO?

THAT’S MY FAVORITE PAIR OF J’S, LET ME CLARIFY. NOW, IF YOU WANT TO TAKE IT ALL THE WAY BACK, I’LL HAVE TO GO WITH THE COOL GRAY 993’S FROM NEW BALANCE. AND, A FRESH PAIR, AT THAT.

THAT’S A TOUGH PAIR OF NEW BALANCES. ME, PERSONALLY, KNOWING THEY JUST DROPPED THE OG BLUE AND WHITE COLORWAY, IF I COULD GET MY HANDS ON THOSE, I WOULD.

I LIKE THE 2’S! COMBAT BOOTS, SPACEMAN BOOTS, WHATEVER, THE 2’S ARE THE MOVE FOR ME. I’M A DIFFERENT KIND OF CAT AS I’M NOT FROM CHARLOTTE. THIS IS HOME, THOUGH, AND I BRING THE DC SWAG TO THE QUEEN CITY.

89

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A SNEAKERHEAD? MAN, SINCE I CAME OUT THE WOMB; LIVING AND GOING TO SCHOOL IN DC MADE EVERYDAY AN OPPORTUNITY FOR A FASHION STATEMENT. IT STARTED IN ELEMENTARY. THERE, YOU MAY HAVE HAD ON A UNIFORM BUT IF YOU WERE WEARING DOPE KICKS, THAT SET THE WHOLE FIT OFF. I DIDN’T GET INTO THE BUSINESS OF SNEAKERS UNTIL THREE TO FOUR MONTHS AGO. AND, I JUST RECENTLY RECEIVED THIS PROMOTION AS SHOP MANAGER TWO WEEKS AGO. NEEDLESS TO SAY, IT’S BEEN A REAL BLESSING FOR THE OWNER, RICH, TO TRUST ME WITH HIS ESTABLISHMENT AND PUT ME IN A POSITION IN WHICH I CAN GROW. IT’S JUST VERY COOL TO BE ABLE TO DO THINGS SUCH AS THIS AND NETWORK WITH A VARIETY OF PEOPLE. STASH WAS BIRTHED IN CONNECTICUT, SO FOR HIM TO TRUST ME WITH HIS CHARLOTTE BABY, IS A BLESSING—I’M GRATEFUL.

HOW DO YOU GET THE SHOES? DO YOU TRADE AND/OR BUY? WE PURCHASE SHOES; WE DON’T DO THE TRADING THING. BECAUSE OF OUR NAME, WE’RE QUESTIONED AND APPROACHED, QUITE FREQUENTLY, ABOUT TRADING BUT THE ANSWER IS NO! THE SNEAKERS HAVE TO BE DS (DEADSTOCK) IN ORDER FOR US TO BUY THEM. AND, UNLIKE OTHER BOUTIQUES, WE ONLY DO $50 OVER RETAIL.

SPEAKING OF, IS THERE ANYTHING THAT SEPARATES YOUR ESTABLISHMENT FROM OTHER SNEAKER BOUTIQUES IN CHARLOTTE? LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION! I CAN’T STRESS THAT ENOUGH. THE FACT THAT WE’RE RIGHT DOWNTOWN, IN THE HEART OF THE CITY, RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE RITZ CARLTON, NEAR THE HORNET’S ARENA THE PANTHER’S STADIUM, SPEAKS VOLUMES. WE MEET MANY DIFFERENT PEOPLE, INCLUDING THOSE IN THE CORPORATE CREW WHO ARE LOOKING FOR HOT EXOTICS. BEING DOWNTOWN, WE’RE ABLE TO CAPITALIZE.

I SEE YOU HAVE THE $500 PENNY PACK OVER THERE, IS THAT THE MOST PRIZED POSSESSION IN THE STORE? ACTUALLY, IT’S NOT. THE PACK FOR THE PENNY’S IS GOING FOR $800. RETAIL WAS $500 BUT YOU CAN BUY THE INDIVIDUAL SHOE FOR THAT. THE PACK, HOWEVER, IS $800. WE HAVE THE ’08 BEIJING BLAZES. NOW, THOSE ARE ON THE MARKET FOR $850. WE HAVE ONE OF THE 100 PAIRS THAT WERE MADE! TELL YOUR FOLK TO COME GET THOSE!

DID YOU GUYS GET A CHANCE TO SEE THE BLACK SHEEP 1’S? THE PAID IN FULLS? YEH, WE SAW THEM. GOOD SHOE BUT LOOKING AT THEM, THEY COULD’VE DONE BETTER.

PERSONALLY, I DIDNT LIKE THE SB ETCHING IN IT; IT KINDA THREW THE SHOE OFF. DON’T GET ME WRONG, I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE AWAY FROM THE SNEAKER. IT’S A HOT SNEAKER BUT AT THE SAME TIME, WE’RE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING THAT’S GOING TO CATCH SOMEONE’S EYE. IF WE WERE TO PUT THOSE UP, IT’LL LOOK LIKE EVERY OTHER SNEAKER. WE NEED SOMETHING HOT, SOMETHING EXOTIC.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN CLT? FOR ABOUT TEN YEARS. I MOVED DOWN HERE WHEN I WAS 13, WENT TO WEST CHARLOTTE AND THEN TRANSFERRED TO PRIVATE SCHOOL. FROM THERE, I ATTENDED MORGAN STATE UNIVERSITY AND CAME BACK TO CHARLOTTE AFTER LEARNING MY GRANDMOTHER WAS SICK. I STAYED TO HELP HER OUT, WORKING MULTIPLE JOBS, INCLUDING PRESBYTERIAN HOSPITAL. IT WASN’T UNTIL RECENTLY THAT I QUIT THAT JOB TO DO THIS, FULLTIME. BECAUSE OF THE LOVE AND THE PASSION THAT I HAVE FOR THE SNEAKER AND DUE TO THE LOVE AND PASSION THAT I HAVE FOR RICH, I’M HERE. HE TOOK ME UNDER HIS WINGS LIKE A BABY BROTHER. IT’S NO MISTAKE THAT WE’RE ALL ABOUT FAMILY. WE WANT PEOPLE WHO ARE GOING TO BE AT SOT FOR THE RIGHT REASONS. THE MONEY, THAT WILL COME BUT YOU HAVE TO A FAMILIAL-LIKE BOND. THAT TRUST AND FOUNDATION IS A MUST. TRUSTING SOMEONE WITH YOUR BUSINESS, AND PRODUCT IS A BIG DEAL.

YOU HAVE A GREAT SELECTION OF CLOTHES AND ACCESSORIES, AS WELL. TALK ABOUT THOSE. WE HAVE SNAPS. WE HAVE MITCHELL AND NESS. WE HAVE BEANNIES. RIGHT NOW, WE’RE SO OFFICIAL WITH THESE AMERICAN EAGLE HATS. THEY HAVE STRAIGHT LEATHER BRIMS AND AZTEC PATTERNS. OFFICIAL. WE ALSO CARRY AN URBAN BRAND, ENTREE’. IT’S A CLOTHING LINE BASED OUT OF BROOKLYN NY AND CREATED BY THREE DUDES WITH A START IN THEIR BASEMENT. WE ALSO HAVE A BRAND FROM RUSSIA CALLED MISHKA. THEIR DESIGNS ARE REALLY DOPE!

SO WHAT’S NEXT FOR STASH? MAN, WE’RE JUST BUILDING. YOU NEVER KNOW AS WE’RE TAKING IT A DAY AT A TIME. I FEEL LIKE WE’VE BEEN THRU A FEW HOOPS AND HURDLES BUT THE OWNER IS TRYING TO GET SOME THINGS TOGETHER. WE’RE RE-ESTABLISHING WHO WE ARE FROM A CONSUMER’S POINT OF VIEW. YOU KNOW, STARTING OVER FRESH. WE’RE GETTING NEW PRODUCT, INCORPORATING A NEW FEEL, A NEW LOOK WHILE KEEPING IT SOT. WE’RE PUSHING INTO THE COMMUNITY SO OUR NAME ISN’T FOREIGN. AND NO, WE’RE NOT IN COMPETITION WITH ANYONE OTHER THAN OURSELVES. WE JUST HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO BE IN A GREAT BUSINESS—DEALING WITH SNEAKERS—AND LIKE THE PAIR WE WEAR, WE’RE GOING TO ROCK THIS THING.

REVIEW: Ab-Soul, ‘These Days’

REVIEW: Ed Sheeran, ‘X’ (Multiply)

Sounding Off: Harvey Cummings II

Sounding Off: Harvey Cummings II

Proudly repping West Coast, Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) has had a busy year. In January, Isaiah Rashad released his critically-acclaimed debut ‘Cilvia Demo’ which was quickly followed by Schoolboy Q’s ‘Oxymoron’ in February. Even the songstress of the set, SZA, got a jab in, dropping her TDE debut ‘Z’ in April. And, then there’s Herbert Anthony Stevens IV, better known as Ab-Soul.

It’s been three years since Ed Sheeran debuted his first studio album + (Plus). Now, the 23-year old, English, singer-songwriter is back for his follow-up project entitled, ‘X’ (Multiply) which is an opus of acoustic goodness. Here, he dives, deeply into past loves, life, and heartache. Standout tracks like the Pharrell Williams-produced, lead single ‘Sing’ and the clever, ‘Bloodstream,’ keep the album’s character in balance. This album highlights Sheeran’s, organic style of acoustic R&B and is reminiscent of crooners like D’Angelo and Justin Timberlake. Originally, ‘X’ was slated purely with vocals and guitar; however, legendary producer Rick Rubin added plenty of sounds and goodies during post production that increased the relevancy of this sophomore project. If you’re cruising on a pleasant day or relaxing at home after work, push play and enjoy!

Far from a newcomer, this California-born-and-bred emcee released his third studio album ‘These Days’ on June 24, 2014, two years after his project ‘Control System’ caused a flutter in the sound waves. Unlike his previous works, ‘These Days’ is deeper, darker, and more intuitive. It delivers solid hip hop with a provocative supporting cast, including features from Kendrick Lamar, Lupe Fiasco, Schoolboy Q, SZA, Rick Ross, Jay Rock, Danny Brown, and a host of others. With this release, Ab-Soul continues to prove that he’s not a common rapper in that he, steadily, improves with each project! Expect this trend to continue, propelling the quality of records released from TDE.

BEAST BEATS 98

kanye west

10. ‘Talk About Our Love,’ Brandy (Afrodisiac, 2004) 2004 was Kanye’s year. After the success of Dropout, everyone wanted a slice of Ye’s pie and Brandy was no exception. ‘Talk About Our Love’ is a favorite, in part, because of the extended groove of those G minor 7th chords (opposed to Pharrell’s ample use of major 7th chords). It was simple and it rocked, hard. And, the 1970-ish vibe in the chorus complimented the song and Brandy’s raspy voice, as well. This beat cemented the notion that Kanye could handle R&B! 9. ‘Woopty Do’ feat. Big Sean, Cyhi The Prynce (Royal Flush 2, 2011) Kanye, with the aid of his mentor, No I.D., made a soulful banger with this one. The doses of tambourine and sax gave the sounds a solid upgrade. And, who doesn’t like horn samples? Constantly on repeat, it’s a meaningful track from Ye’s newest signee. 8. ‘Break My Heart,’ Common (Finding Forever, 2007) Common and Kanye go together like peanut butter and jelly. Using a George Duke EP Piano sample to make his point, this beat, I love. 7. ‘I’m Just Doing My Job,’ T.I. (Trap Muzik, 2003) Trap Muzik came out mid-ATL-Crunk-Invasion and all the beats were hard, trunk-rattling-heavy and

rugged. Then this track rang out! Kanye put his soul in this beat and the combination of background and vocal samples mixed with a great sounding drum loop, easily, made this my favorite song off the album. 6. ‘Brown Sugar (Extra Sweet),’ Mos Def feat. Faith Evans (The Brown Sugar Soundtrack, 2002) Did you forget about this one? Kanye produced the title track off the album, featuring Mos and Faith. This beat embodied groove! It wasn’t neo-soul, it wasn’t quite two-step but it made me feel good every time I heard it. My favorite chill record from Kanye, no doubt.

5. ‘The Food,’ Common (Be, 2005) Like many, I first heard this song on Chappelle’s Show and wondered when it was dropping?! The piano riff and Sam Cooke samples made this beat rock. And, you know it’s a dope song when your head bobs, just thinking about it. With Kanye producing 90% of this album, Common is now not-socommon. 4. ‘Barry Bonds,’ Kanye West feat. Lil’ Wayne (Graduation, 2007) How many times have you had to start this one over? I lost count. This was probably Ye’s simplest beat, but it embodied New York hoodie-rap to the fullest. The laid back drums mixed with the EP

99

Piano made this beat work. “Top 5 MCs, you gotta rewind me!” 3. ‘Heart of the City,’ Jay-Z (The Blueprint, 2002) My favorite beat off Hov’s classic LP. The opening vamp started it all and the guitar loop, which was crazy-synched with the drums, stamped it! Kanye was hungry and, clearly, made a statement with this song. I still can’t believe he wanted DMX on this, though. Shameful. 2. ‘We Major,’ Kanye West feat. Nas (Late Registration, 2005) On any given day, at any given moment, people will argue that this is the best beat Kanye’s ever done. It banged hard and complemented the horns and snare so well. Layered with keyboards and synthesizers, Kanye changed his whole direction with this creation. 1. ‘Last Call,’ Kanye West (The College Dropout, 2004) “I said toast mothafuckaaaaaa….” There is such a thing as a perfect beat and this is it! Layered, it starts with an infectious bass loop followed by organ and synths. Near the end, a sax hollered and got your immediate attention. Hell, I didn’t even mind the extra five minutes of monologue because the beat was so dope. Again, “I said toast mothafuckaaaaaa….”
