trails & fishing TRAILS

FISHING

DuPage forest preserves have 145 miles of trails for hiking, and most allow biking, horseback riding and cross-country skiing. Maps for 24 preserves and a full map of the entire county are in the Forest Preserve District’s Trails Guide.

Fishing is one of the most popular activities in the forest preserves, and you can fish on most lakes, ponds, rivers, and tributaries, many of which are stocked with bass, pike, walleye and other species. If you’re 16 or older and not legally disabled, you must carry a valid Illinois fishing license (an inland trout stamp, too, if you’re fishing for trout). Regulations, depth maps and creel limits for 31 lakes are included in the Forest Preserve District’s Fishing Guide.

For complete rules and regulations, maps, brochures, and other information, visit dupageforest.org 24/7. For picnic and family camping reservations and most permits, click “Registration & Permits.” You can also call or stop by Visitor Services at 630-933-7248 or 3S580 Naperville Road in Wheaton weekdays 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Saturdays June 1 – Aug. 24 (except July 6) 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

boating RENTALS

PRIVATE WATERCRAFT ON LAKES

Rent canoes, kayaks and rowboats at Blackwell starting the first weekend in April. Rentals are available weekends through the end of September and daily Memorial Day through Labor Day. You can also rent watercraft Saturdays and Sundays at Herrick Lake from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Both sites sell bait and accept cash or credit cards.

With an annual or daily permit you can enjoy boating on four forest preserve lakes: Silver Lake at Blackwell, Round Meadow Lake at Hidden Lake, Mallard Lake at Mallard Lake and Deep Quarry Lake at West Branch. In addition to dupageforest.org and Visitor Services you can purchase annual permits at the boat-rental building at Blackwell when it’s open and daily permits (cash only) at steel lockboxes at all four lakes. Senior citizens are entitled to one free annual permit per calendar year. Watercraft must be under 20 feet long and have a valid hull identification number. If you have an annual permit, it must be affixed to the bow above the waterline. You can’t use gas motors but can use electric ones, but a boat with any kind of motor must have state registration. Inflatable watercraft must have multiple air chambers and either 1) certification by the National Marine Manufacturers Association or the Coast Guard through the manufacturer or 2) factory-made hardened floors. Float tubes and floating devices without foot wells or railings are not allowed. You must have a properly fitting, wearable, Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device for each person on board. Boaters under 13 must wear them at all times, and all boaters regardless of age must wear them in canoes, kayaks, sailboats and inflatable watercraft.

MODEL CRAFTS

Make the forest preserves your next destination for four-legged fun. Dogs are welcomed at most preserves as long as they’re on leashes under 10 feet long. Please clean up after your pet and do not allow it to disturb or harass wildlife or other visitors. The Forest Preserve District has off-leash areas at Blackwell, East Branch, Greene Valley, Hawk Hollow, Mayslake, Oldfield Oaks and Springbrook Prairie, but you need a permit for each dog you bring. Senior citizens, active U.S. military personnel and honorably discharged U.S. military veterans are entitled to one free annual permit per calendar year. You can have permits for as many of your dogs as you wish but can only have three dogs at an area at one time. Preservespecific rules are posted at each site.

If you enjoy navigating model planes or boats, the Forest Preserve District has the perfect area for you! You must have a permit, and senior citizens are entitled to one free annual permit per calendar year.

winter fun ICE FISHING You can ice fish on most forest preserve waters, but rangers do not monitor ice conditions, so you go on the ice at your own risk. As a guideline not a guarantee, a minimum of 4 inches of ice is recommended for any activity. You can fish up to two holes at one time, but they need to be less than 10 inches in diameter. If you’re 16 or older and not legally disabled, you must carry a valid Illinois fishing license (an inland trout stamp, too, if you’re fishing for trout). Regulations, depth maps and creel limits for 31 lakes are included in the Forest Preserve District’s Fishing Guide.

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING Cross-country skiing is an excellent way to get some exercise while enjoying the outdoors, and you can ski on most forest preserve trails. Rangers groom over 80 miles when weather allows. If you’re a classic skier, please use the edge of the trail. Freestyle skiers and other visitors should stay in the center and avoid stepping on set tracks. Maps for 24 preserves and a full map of the entire county are in the Forest Preserve District’s Trails Guide.

SLEDDING AND ICE SKATING You can sled and skate at most forest preserves, but rangers do not monitor conditions, so you do so at your own risk. As a guideline not a guarantee, a minimum of 4 inches of ice is recommended for any ice activity.

SNOW TUBING On weekends and school holidays December – February when there’s plenty of snow on Mount Hoy at Blackwell (usually more than 3 inches) you can take a fun 800-foot ride down the hill. Inner tube rentals are at the base of the hill and are $10 per tube per day. Rentals end at 3:30 p.m. and only District tubes are allowed.

SNOWSHOES If you want to hit the trail on snowshoes but don’t have your own pair, you can rent them at three locations. Rentals are $10 for two hours or $15 per day but are only available when there’s plenty of snow on the trails. At Blackwell When Mount Hoy’s open for snow tubing, you can rent snowshoes at the base until 2 p.m. At Forest Preserve District Headquarters at Danada Rentals are available weekdays 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. Call 630-933-7248 for availability. At Fullersburg Woods Nature Education Center You can rent snowshoes daily 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the visitor center. Call 630-850-8110 for availability.

DOG SLEDDING If there’s plenty of snow and you’re a musher, you can use the Regional, Bobolink and connector trails through the McKee Marsh area north of Mack Road at Blackwell and the Thunderbird Spur Trail, which begins at the parking lot on Thunderbird Road, at Greene Valley. During the rest of the year, you can use wheeled carts under 4 feet wide on any trails that allow biking.

rules & regulations The Forest Preserve District relies on visitors to help protect the public and the county’s natural resources by following its General Use Regulation Ordinance, which is posted at each preserve and at dupageforest.org. A few of the regulations included in the ordinance are listed below. • Most forest preserves are open daily from one hour after sunrise to one hour after sunset. • Pets must be leashed at all times, and leashes cannot be more than 10 feet long. Dogs with valid Forest Preserve District permits can use the off-leash areas at Blackwell, East Branch, Greene Valley, Hawk Hollow, Mayslake, Oldfield Oaks and Springbrook Prairie. • Anglers 16 or older who are not legally disabled must carry valid Illinois fishing licenses (trout stamps, too, if they’re fishing for trout) and follow all size requirements and creel limits for any fish they keep.

• The following are strictly prohibited: Possessing or consuming alcohol Littering (Please use the trash and recycling bins.) Operating motorized vehicles off-road (This includes all-terrain vehicles, snowmobiles and motorcycles.) Feeding, hunting, trapping, or collecting wildlife or removing any natural resource Dumping debris such as grass clippings, leaves or other landscaping materials Stapling, pinning, tacking, nailing, taping, tying or otherwise attaching signs or decorations to trees, shelters or other structures (You can have them but they must be free-standing.)
