His works express the glamour and opulence of sixteenth-century Venice, yet his magnificent canvases drew the disapproving attention of The Inquisition. This talk will look at his highly successful career and consider how the grandeur and independence of his vision mirrored that of The Most Serene Republic – the city of Venice. Lecturer: Jo Walton

16 Rembrandt

Insight Lecture Series Rembrandt: Rembrandt’s son Titus dressed as a monk Thurs 16 June Rembrandt (1606–1669) is revered as his country’s greatest artist. Some of his best known portraits, admired for their directness and honesty, are those of himself and his family. The portrait of 19 year old Titus, dressed as a monk, shows Rembrandt’s tender observation of his son, and his mastery of light and a limited palette. Lecturer: Jessica Saraga Ingres: Comtesse d’Haussonville

Van Gogh: Portrait with Felt Hat

Art in the Open Air

Cornelia Parker

Peter Randall-Page

Thurs 25 Aug Vincent Van Gogh (1853–1890) had a brief but productive career. He travelled frequently but spent most of his artistic career in France. His work was not appreciated during his own lifetime. We know more about his troubled mind than his colourful paintings. His main subjects were portraits and nature. Self Portrait with Felt Hat was produced during the winter of 1887–88 in Paris. Lecturer: Melanie Paice

10.30–11.30am, Linbury Room To celebrate the Bicentenary, The Art Fund presented the Gallery with the sculpture Walking the Dog by Peter Randall-Page. In Art in the Open Air, Peter is joined by two leading, contemporary British sculptors, Richard Wilson and Cornelia Parker to discuss their practice, influences and the development of their work. Series of 3 £25 (£20 Friends), Single lecture £10 (£8 Friends) Coffee Afterwards

Wed 8 June Nominated for the Turner Prize in 1997, Cornelia Parker is known for her installations and interventions. Her work formalises things beyond our control making something quiet and contemplative like the ‘eye of the storm’. By suspending, exploding, crushing and stretching everyday objects, she allows the viewer to witness their transformation into something compelling and extraordinary Cornelia Parker, RA, Sculptor

Wed 22 June Peter Randall-Page has gained an international reputation through his sculpture, drawing and prints, undertaken numerous large scale commissions and exhibited widely, He will talk about his artistic practice, which has always been informed and inspired by the study of organic form and its subjective impact on our emotions, with particular reference to his sculpture ‘Walking the Dog’ Peter Randall-Page, Sculptor

Richard Wilson

Thurs 14 July The sumptuous portrait of the Victomtesse d’Haussonville is ample testimony to Ingres’s supreme talent for creating ‘true portraits’, ‘ideal reconstructions of individuals’ (Baudelaire). This lecture will celebrate the strange beauty of these idealised society portraits. Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres (1780–1867) resented his success in this genre so we will also examine other facets of the work of this complex and puzzling artist. Lecturer: Alan Read

Ingres

Wed 1 June Richard Wilson is fascinated with architectural and perceived space where our comprehension of that space is questioned. His works draw on engineering and construction and are characterized by their size and structural daring. ‘For Turning the Place Over’, part of Liverpool’s European Capital Of Culture 2008, he pivoted a vast ovoid section of a condemned building.
