Year 6 Curriculum Overview Summer Term 2024

Art

Pupils will be exploring the art of animation this term, working both independently and collaboratively. Strengthening skills in storyboarding and draughtsmanship, pupils will be using their creative imagination and a variety of media to produce moving images, inspired by the works of William Kentridge and Caroline Leaf.

Performing Arts

In Performing Arts lessons this term students are working towards their performance of Oliver Jr! This will be performed on 15th and 16th May. Students will learn choreography and choral work for large ensemble numbers, as well as working on character development, and where appropriate solo work. Students will learn to work collaboratively as part of a team and understand the skills required to put on a musical

English French

This term in English we are going to be starting our Poetry topic Pupils will be taught to:

Read and discuss an increasingly wide range of poetry

Read books (poems) that are structured in different ways and for a range of purposes

Make comparisons within and across books (poems)

Learn a wider range of poetry by heart

Prepare poems to read aloud/perform, showing understanding through intonation/tone/volume so that the meaning is clear to an audience

Participate in discussions about books (poems) that are read to them and those they can read for themselves, building on their own and others’ ideas and challenging views courteously

Summarise the main ideas drawn from more than one paragraph, identifying key details that support the main ideas

Identify how language, structure and presentation contribute to meaning

Discuss and evaluate how authors use language, including figurative language, considering the impact on the reader

In Y6 French, students will learn about house work and the things we have to do to make sure our houses stay tidy They will learn how to express themselves when they are angry and when they want to protest about something They will also learn about how to talk about their relationships with other people and how to write a letter of thanks when someone has done something kind for them

In the second half of the summer term, the students will learn about expressing themselves in French about social media and how to compare different objects They will also learn how to talk about a past event and their childhood memories Lastly, students will learn how about fairytales and how to write one

Harmony (Sustainable Thinking)

These lessons are designed to teach children about the Principles of Harmony in Nature and the importance of keeping this harmony in balance The Principles of Harmony are Interdependence, Natural cycles, Diversity, Adaptation, Health, Geometry, and Oneness The subject is explored by students through inquiries of learning, reading, and discussing stories, explorative walks in nature, and creative activities These questions are linked with their syllabus content each half-term and learning is interdisciplinary with Art, Maths, English, and Science subject knowledge development

This term’s theme will be My Place in the World

Summer 1: Diversity

Students will learn about carbon as the basic building block of all living organisms on Earth They will explore its importance by examining fundamental cellular, biochemical and energy storage processes Students will be introduced to the carbon cycle and develop an understanding of how it regulates Earth's climate and sustains ecosystems, while innovative thinking about carbon storage and use offers solutions to address climate change and transition to a more sustainable future

Summer 2: Oneness

Inquiry Question: How do I belong to my environment?

Students will explore how belonging to their environment involves developing a sense of connection, stewardship, and responsibility towards the natural world and the communities they are part of They will explore how evolution theory and the inheritance of genetic information explain the unity and diversity of life on Earth Through art, students will explore how local conditions cultivate a sense of belonging and influence the characteristics of a place

Humanities

History at HCH helps pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world We aim to inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past; equipping pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement History helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time

This term we will be studying the topic of Crime and Punishment We will introduce children to the development of the system of courts, police and different approaches to punishment from the Anglo-Saxon times to the modern day The topic of crime and punishment is explored sensitively through philosophical enquiry, creative writing, poetry, drama, art and design

Latin

This term, year 6 will be consolidating translating simple sentences using masculine and feminine nouns with present and imperfect tense verbs from the first four conjugations They will also look at the verb to be with masculine, feminine and neuter nouns from the first and second declension Some may progress onto nouns with accusative and ablative prepositions We will also be exploring some of the stories from Homer’s Odyssey in Latin and in translation.

Mandarin

In the summer term, children will mainly learn to talk about hobbies in Chinese

Summer 1, students learn to talk about what they do in their free time, what they like doing, and talk about sports, understanding and responding to questions Students will be able to ask and answer questions about hobbies

Summer 2, students learn the days of the week, build sentences based on the grammar structure, learn about young people’s hobbies in China. This term, children will learn about the Chinese Dragon Boat festival, explores the legendary story of the festival and celebrate it by making origami and crafts.

Maths

We aim to ensure children learn to be comfortable with thinking mathematically so that Maths becomes both useful, creative and enjoyable

This term, topics include:

Areas and perimeters of shapes (quadrilaterals and triangles)

Linear equations and formulae

Area and circumferences of circles and sectors of circles

Plotting linear graphs and finding the gradient of a graph

Calculating averages and frequency tables

Expanding brackets and factorising linear expressions

Measuring and calculating bearings

In the summer term, the children will learn about cricket and athletics In cricket they will learn how to field and scoop a ball up, throw and catch over varying distances with an under-arm and over-arm technique, bowl, hit a moving ball with control and play a modified competitive game In athletics, the lessons will prepare the children to compete at their best level in their houses for sports day at the end of June We will practice sprints, relays, shot put throw, discus throw, broad jump and long jump The students will learn through sports-specific warm-ups and partner and group work to perfect their technique in the athletic event they will perform in. There will be an emphasis on self-improvement and team support to build a culture of resilience and sportsmanship in line with our ethos at the Hampton Court House

In the first half of the summer term, we will continue the topic entitled ‘Changing Me’, all about puberty and growing up

Once we have completed this topic, we will start our ‘Healthy me ’ topic Children will explore ways to keep minds and bodies healthy and explore things to avoid and things to include we will discuss healthy eating and healthy choices, having a balanced diet and being physically active We will also look at how to be a good friend and finish with how to deal with difficult situations

As always, our PSHE is delivered with a mindful approach, giving plenty of time for thinking, discussing and reflecting. Science

This term Year 6 will explore the topic of Animals including Humans - the art of being human - and we will identify and name the main parts of the human circulatory system; describe the functions of the heart, blood vessels and blood and recognise the impact of diet, exercise, drugs and lifestyle on the way their body's function and describe the ways in which nutrients and water are transported within animals, including humans
